Having visited Koishikawa Korakuen on February 14
my wife researched this subject and suggested a visit to Fuchu Municipal Museum Kyodo-no-Mori (府中市郷土の森博物館)
Ume differ from the sakura of the somei yoshino variety most closely associated with Japan
Public parks and gardens that feature ume often have many varieties with different colors and blossoms
which bloom over a six-week or longer span
Kyodo-no-mori has more than 1,100 trees in 60-plus varieties
A few trees are so similar to sakura that there is a sign explaining that they are in fact ume
Others are very different with a color range from faint red to deep dark red
Although the Kyodo-no-mori Ume Festival ends on March 9
there should be no shortage of trees in bloom for at least another week or more
Much of the beauty is in small clusters of flowers rather than the massive flower clouds produced by sakura
A shallow depth of field allows striking closeups while blurring otherwise distracting background details
the branches move in and out of focus continually
Heavily oriented to local history, the museum has an extensive collection of prehistoric artefacts discovered in the Fuchu area and a collection of daily household items from the immediate postwar and 60s high growth period
One large exhibit is devoted to the annual festival of the Okunitama Shrine located at the south end of the central shopping district in Fuchu
this festival is noted for its large and numerous dashi (山車) and attracts enormous crowds
one housed in a Meiji-era building. During special events
there are also "food cars" offering various types of street food snacks
Kyodo-no-mori is adjacent to the Tamagawa Cycling course, making it accessible from Kawasaki or Tachikawa and points between. Most of Kyodo-no-mori has good access for wheelchair users.Admission is ¥300 JPY ($2 USD) for adults

Real estate private equity firm Gaw Capital Partners has acquired land in Japan
The company recently announced it has acquired a property located in Fuchu Intelligent Park
The property will be demolished and redeveloped into a data center
The property is situated near the Meito Sangyo and Fuchu Buildings in Fuchu Intelligent Park
which Gaw is also developing data centers on
The sites were acquired in 2021 and 2022 respectively by funds under Gaw Capital’s management and are currently being developed into carrier-neutral Tier III-quality data centers as Phase I and II
Spanning a land size of 11,235 sqm (120,930 sq ft)
the property’s addition will double the scale of the data center campus
the IT capacity of the three data centers is projected to increase from 40MW to 78MW (equivalent to 7,800 racks)
Gaw acquired the Fuchu Building in April 2022. At the time, the company said it planned to develop a 40MW, 4,000-rack data center campus. The company is partnering with GDS on the development of the first two phases
but it’s unclear if GDS is involved in this third phase
Gaw has also announced investments and/or projects in South Korea, and Vietnam. The firm was reportedly interested in bidding for Global Switch
but didn’t make the final bidders' shortlist

On Saturday, November 9, 2024, 5 international students from TUFS participated in the Fuchu City 70th Anniversary 1 Day Walking Event held in Fuchu City. The group was led by two staff members from the International Education Support Office (IES) of TUFS
The goal of the 1 Day Walking Event was to get to know Fuchu by following the walking course from Fuchu Park to various locations throughout the city
such as the Kokushikan and Ieyasu Palace Historical Site Square
each participant received a bag of emergency preparedness goods
As many of the international students come from countries with few natural disasters
the IES staff explained how to use each item and what else to do to prepare for natural disasters

Penal reforms will place more emphasis on the “recovery” of convicts instead of their “punishment” to prevent recidivism
but prison guards say their own needs are being ignored
will decide whether a convict will be forced to do hard labor as part of their rehabilitation program
And more suitable programs will be tailored for each prisoner so that they won’t commit crimes again
who have provided vocational training for convicts to help them reintegrate into society
have been instructed to be more considerate of the inmates’ feelings and emotional needs
A 43-year-old guard at Fuchu Prison in western Tokyo says the shift has done nothing to increase his job satisfaction
“I don’t feel any sense of fulfillment at my job
“A police officer’s job is good because if they arrest someone
But it is us who have to spend a long time with the arrested people.”
His feelings are shared by prison guards around Japan
In a Justice Ministry questionnaire sent to prison guards in 2023
40 percent of the 5,032 respondents said they “don’t have a sense of mission or pride” at their jobs
“One difficulty of the job is that society or people of this nation do not understand what we do.”

He has been working as a prison guard for 20 years
There have been times when he felt that his advice reached the inmates
Fuchu Prison is known as a place for repeat offenders
nearly 80 percent of the inmates there had previously been imprisoned
The guard said it is not rare to see an inmate who was released from the prison show up again at the factory
“There are inmates who have successfully mended their ways
But we only get to see those who have committed crimes again,” he said
His job has also affected his outside life
After an inmate threatened to kidnap the guard’s child
he told his child not to tell others about his job
the guard said he feels a sense of confinement because he spends entire shifts inside the strong walls of the prison
But the only time people pay attention to us is when a problem arises in this prison,” he said
often receives verbal abuse from the inmates
including death threats and insults about her appearance
The abuse often comes when she patrols between the prisoners’ cells during night shifts
fearing she will be punished if she yells back at them
Justice Ministry directives and other instructions stipulate that prison guards “must remain calm and collected and be mindful of appropriate behavior and speech.”
the guards will be required to increasingly give consideration to the inmates’ feelings
The guard said she agrees that such consideration is important for the inmates’ recovery
But she also feels a balance is needed between “maintaining discipline” and “providing support.”
If she listens too much to what the inmates say
She also doesn’t have time to listen to everything they want to talk about
“I understand the role we are expected to play is changing

This Sunday once again sees the Group 1 Japan Cup run at Tokyo Racecourse in Fuchu
just a short distance away from the hustle and bustle of the capital
This year marks the 44th time for the autumn showpiece
and it is part of the Japan Racing Association’s Autumn International Series of races
which comprises four weekends of Group 1 races.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
the Japan Cup started as a challenge for Japanese horses to see how they would measure up against other top horses from different countries around the world
The first Japan Cup was won by the 5-year-old American-bred mare named Mairzy Doates
and was ridden by globe-trotting American jockey Cash Asmussen
It took the local horses a few years to match up to the might of the foreign runners
in 1984 — the year the race became officially recognized as an international Group 1 — Katsuragi Ace surprised at big odds and carried off the spoils for Japan
The mechanics in green overalls and white hard hats tinkering with cars at a service garage in Fuchu city on the outskirts of western Tokyo make an honest living during the day but spend nights behind bars
The facility has all the hallmarks of a regular garage but in fact is part of Fuchu Prison
which occupies a 260,000-square-meter site
is the nation’s largest correctional facility
the prison’s mission is to encourage inmates to learn a skill that will enable them to earn a living after they are released
A key aim of the training program is to reduce the recidivism rate among prisoners after they return to society
These initiatives are expected to take on heightened importance with a 2022 revision to the Criminal Law that will take effect in June next year
shifts the focus more on rehabilitation to prepare inmates for life on the outside after their release rather than the traditional notion of simply imposing punishment for criminal acts
One of the mechanics at the prison garage is in his 40s and doing a 12-year stretch for robbery resulting in bodily injuries
passed the car mechanic certification exam in March
The man said he signed up for the program in the hope he will not have to struggle for work after his release
“I believe I will cause less trouble for my future employer,” the man said
The man lost his previous job over a salary dispute
but he did not dare tell his wife he had suddenly become unemployed
He sounded out an acquaintance about work prospects
only to be asked to join a planned robbery
The man could not bring himself to turn it down after seeking help
making him an accomplice in the crime when it was carried out
The Justice Ministry said in a white paper on crime that 70 percent of 8,180 repeat offenders who found themselves back in prison in 2022 were out of work at the time they committed their offenses
Ex-convicts tend to commit crimes when they are unable to secure steady work following their release and run into financial difficulties
Fuchu Prison incarcerates many repeat offenders
About 70 percent of them were convicted of robbery or substance abuse on multiple occasions
Roughly 40 percent of the inmates have ties with gang groups
prisons are now placing greater importance on courses where detainees can acquire a license or certification
as well as job-related knowledge and skills
to increase their chances of finding viable work once they regain their freedom
Fuchu Prison started its automobile inspection training course more than 50 years ago
training is provided for things like car washing
Fuchu Prison services more than 300 vehicles a year for clients from outside the prison
The prison sets charges on the basis it cannot offer substitute vehicles and should not squeeze out private sector business rivals by undercutting them cost-wise
Specialist officers for vocational training at prisons who have a proven track record work closely with the small group of inmates to teach not only mundane things like car interior cleaning but also how to apply rust-proof paint and the ins and outs of servicing a vehicle
Around 100 kinds of certifications and job training courses are provided by prisons across the country
according to the ministry’s Correctional Bureau
It said 6,491 licenses were obtained by inmates in fiscal 2022
The Justice Ministry set aside about 440 million yen ($2.82 million) for the rehabilitation program for the current fiscal year
Ensuring the effectiveness of the training courses so former convicts are not recycled into the prison system remains another challenge
the ministry has shied away from aggressively trying to ascertain whether the training courses have really helped ex-cons to obtain employment
citing “the possibility that doing so could disrupt efforts to rebuild their lives.”
But after the revision to the Criminal Law
the ministry published a report in spring last year on the results of a study assessing the rehabilitation program in terms of gaining employment
The survey covered inmates who had just completed their terms of probation after being released on parole in 2019
It showed that 78.7 percent of those who completed job training courses found employment
4.7 percentage points higher than for those who did not enroll in one
The report said that more than 40 percent of inmates who finished civil engineering and construction-related courses secured jobs in their chosen field
But the figure was less than 1 percent for enrollees of information processing and building equipment management courses
The average rate for detainees who secured positions related to courses they took while in prison came to 17.5 percent
the ministry concluded that job training courses contributed to the stable employment of former inmates by providing them with the sort of knowledge and techniques they would be expected to have in today’s working environment
The ministry will consider doing a similar study if the need arises
a professor of criminology at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto
said those who are released from prison without documented job skills unquestionably will find it harder to carve out a useful role to play in society
She also speculated that many ex-convicts had to settle for jobs unrelated to their prison training due to the tough employment situation
referring to the low ratio of securing positions in the field they preferred
Morihisa credited the prison rehabilitation programs for giving detainees an opportunity to experience working for a living and developing the motivation to keep going with a vision for their futures
given that most of them had little previous job experience
She called for further assistance from the prison system so former prisoners can continue to hold on to their jobs
“I believe the rehabilitation program also needs to teach prisoners how to better communicate with colleagues in the workplace and interact with other former inmates and those who had similar experiences so they can share their thoughts,” Morihisa added

has acquired a property located in Fuchu Intelligent Park
This strategic investment further strengthens the firm’s presence in the well-established data center cluster within 30km from central Tokyo
which is also home to five high-end internet exchange hubs
The Property is situated near Meito Sangyo Building and Fuchu Building in Fuchu Intelligent Park
both of which were acquired in 2021 and 2022 respectively by funds under Gaw Capital’s management and are currently undergoing redevelopment into carrier-neutral Tier III data centers as Phase I and II
The new property will be demolished and redeveloped into Phase III of the data centers to capture the expanding demand in the market
the Property’s addition will double the scale of the data centers
resulting in a total land size of 22,202 sqm
the IT capacity of the data centers is projected to increase from 40 IT MW to 78 IT MW (equivalent to 7,800 racks)
which will make it the largest data center facility in Fuchu City in terms of IT capacity
beyond the construction economies of scale it brings
the acquisition of the Property is expected to deliver significant strategic value to both the data centers and Gaw Capital’s Pan-Asia IDC Platform
Principal – Investments and Head of Japan at Gaw Capital Partners
“We are excited to expand our data center portfolio with the acquisition of this new property
The completion of the transaction allows us to double the scale of our data centers in Fuchu City

Tokyo police have arrested former Fuchu City councilman Ryuichi Akita, 27, in connection with a string of alleged drugging and sexual assault cases involving at least ten men, according to the Asahi Shimbun
The accusations include incidents dating back to December 2021
when Akita reportedly assaulted two intoxicated men at his residence in Suginami Ward
Police arrested Akita on suspicion of quasi-forced intercourse and quasi-forced indecent assault
Upon his detention, he told authorities
The case against Akita expanded after police first arrested him on November 6 for a separate incident
Akita was accused of drugging a man in his 20s at a local event before committing indecent acts
authorities uncovered more than 100 obscene videos stored on his smartphone
leading to the identification of victims in the latest allegations
Investigators now believe that Akita may have targeted more than ten men over several years
Akita’s alleged method involved preying on individuals who were either intoxicated or under the influence of sleeping pills
Authorities suspect that he deliberately targeted vulnerable individuals
creating opportunities to exploit their impaired states
Akita resigned from his position as a Fuchu City councilman on November 11
according to the Fuchu City Council Secretariat
with authorities working to identify additional victims and piece together the full extent of Akita’s alleged crimes

a historic building that was in danger of standing empty and falling into disrepair
has been given a new lease on life to operate as a “ryotei” fancy Japanese-style restaurant
Koishiki started out as a popular hangout for famous literary figures
as well as political and business dignitaries
They included writers Masuji Ibuse (1898-1993) and Eiji Yoshikawa (1892-1962) as well as Tsuyoshi Inukai
who served as prime minister from 1931 until his assassination the following year at the age of 76
The Japanese-style restaurant with an attached inn is registered as a tangible cultural property by the central government
The main structure dates from the early Meiji Era (1868-1912)
There are also four annexes erected in or after the Taisho Era (1912-1926)
All of the five structures were registered as tangible cultural properties in 2004
Koishiki was used as a restaurant and for other purposes after the inn went out of business in 1990
The restaurant operator pulled out in 2019
The city government purchased the properties in 2020 so they could be viewed by the public or be used as rental spaces
City officials had been exploring ways to revive the restaurant and inn as a base to reignite Fuchu’s fortunes
a Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant in Hiroshima’s Higashi Ward
“I want to bring out the charms of local ingredients through my interactions with producers,” he said
who heads the Fuchu city government’s economy and tourism department
said: “We want to come up with ways to encourage diners to visit other places across the city and the Bingo region after they visit the restaurant.”
He added that plans are afoot to make use of Koishiki as an accommodation facility
The reservation-only establishment is open from noon and from 6 p.m
It only serves a full-course meal for 13,000 yen ($81)

Japan is experiencing a significant increase in its death rate, with 1.5 million deaths recorded in 2022, the highest since the Second World War. While graveyards face space shortages, there are fewer relatives available to carry out funeral rites or maintain graves. As a result, customs around death in Japan
simultaneously stimulating a transformation in cemeterial spaces
a range of alternatives to conventional burials are in practice
or even simply scattering ashes in the sea or mountains
Located in Fuchu-shi in Tokyo
Kezouin the Fuchu-shi Cemetery manifests a spatial middle path by retaining traditional burial elements that accommodate evolving customs around burials
It therefore constitutes a combination of individual graves for rising single-family households and family graves (called enshrined graves)
with the facility to transfer the remains to the family grave at a later date
thus providing generations of the same family a shared space
almost as an extension to the traditional graveyard to its southeast
and landscape thus stems from this concept
manifested as mounds—embodying mountains
and mossy flatlands—embodying the foot of mountains
constituting four enshrined graves and 116 individual graves respectively
The five mounds that make up the Hill of Moss organise themselves peripherally
two cherry trees outside the site establish the arrangement of the first two mounds for the enshrined graves
placed almost equidistantly along the periphery
supposedly algorithmically from the profile of the mounds
which allows efficient two-way human traffic
The Plain of Moss grows organically inwards from the pathway
such that each island constituting clusters of individual graves accommodates two to three trees and maintains a 1.2m wide path between each other
Each enshrined grave on the Hill of Moss consists of a black
resting against the mound as if placed in a crack within
A seemingly random pile of nature stones appears to cascade around the tombstone
a nature stone is used as a stand for ritualistic offerings
The remains are buried in a concrete pipe urn
concealed within the mound and behind the tombstone
which branches out to form Y-intersections between itself and the islands
is paved with black granite stones to form ripple-like sand patterns from the centre of the Plain of Moss
and the natural world.

Taito Station Fuchu Kururu is purely dedicated to crane games or “UFO catchers” as they are often called in Japan
The grand opening of the new Taito Station location builds on Japan’s obsession with the game of skill that is ubiquitous around the nation
Unlike the crane machines found in North America

The two companies this week announced they will jointly invest in the construction of a data center campus with a total IT capacity of 40MW in Fuchu City
GDS and Gaw plan to develop a carrier-neutral data center park on two adjacent plots of land in the Fuchu Intelligent Park

Keith and Ronnie showed their appreciation for a special fireworks display in western Tokyo that was synchronized to the Rolling Stones’ greatest hits last summer by presenting the Fuchu city government June 19 with a donation of 1 million yen ($7,039) to help with worthy projects
The band was celebrating its 60th anniversary at the time and its key surviving members--Mick Jagger
Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood--were clearly gobsmacked by the city’s gesture
The city government hired the Tokyo Racecourse for the event held last July that featured around 14,000 fireworks
The band’s members had said they wanted to do something to show appreciation
ran a special train featuring the Rolling Stone’s famous tongue and lips logo to celebrate the anniversary
City streets were also decked out with the logo
Japanese are amazing,” said band co-founder and guitarist Richards prior to the event
“I would never have thought someone would celebrate our anniversary with fireworks.”
the band’s official Twitter account posted a video of the fireworks with a New Year message and comment
said: “The band’s members are happy that the whole city showed support for them
They said that it was a great event and that they wanted to do something to contribute to the city.”

are commonly associated with the onset of the rainy season – just like cherry blossoms are with spring
or even snow-white colours make them instantly identifiable and enliven those dreary
which usually hits Tokyo from late May to early July. A popular legend even says that finding a snail on a hydrangea is a sign of good fortune.
So grab your umbrella and head to these spots to see the most beautiful hydrangeas in Tokyo
As of mid-May, some hydrangeas (like the ones at Fuchu City Local Forest Museum) have already started to bud
but it'll still be a few weeks before they bloom.

¥300, junior high school students and younger children ¥150, free for kids under four.
Photo: genki/PIXTA | Takahata Fudoson TempleBuilt in the 8th century, this ancient temple has more than 200 types of hydrangeas – about 7,500 flowers in total – blooming from June to early July in its garden. The vibrant flowers surrounding the 45m five-story pagoda blend beautifully with the vermillion colour of the tower. The flowers also spread along the mountain behind the temple where you’ll find 88 small standing Jizo statues, creating a mystical ambience.
The temple was owned by a famous member of the Shinsengumi police force during the Edo period (1603-1867). Dedicated to Fudo Myo-o, the temple has a massive wooden sculpture of the Buddhist deity that weighs 1,100kg and is said to be the largest of its kind in Japan.
The temple's hydrangea festival takes place throughout June.
Photo: aki/PIXTAFlanking both sides of the Sumida River, this park is most popular as a vantage point for the Sumida River Fireworks Festival in summer
the Asakusa side of the park has a 2km promenade called Ajisai Road (Hydrangea Road) with over 7,000 hydrangea shrubs of different species
Mid-June is the best time to enjoy these charming flowers and we recommend visiting early in the morning or late in the evening, when the park is less crowded and more serene. At sunset, you can watch the lights come on at Tokyo Skytree across the river.
Photo: tenjou/PIXTA | Tamagawa Dai ParkJust a one-minute walk from Tamagawa Station lies Tamagawadai Park and its multilevel hydrangea garden. Around 3,000 hydrangea shrubs of seven different types bloom from early to mid-June, especially along the laneways, steps and slopes around the station. The park also features a kofun (ancient burial mound), an observation deck, a water botanical garden, a seasonal wildflower garden and more.
Photo: Symme-Jiajia/Photo-ACOne of Japan's first public parks, this sprawling green space in central Tokyo is a famous spot for cherry blossoms in spring and hydrangeas in summer. You’ll find hydrangeas of different species growing along beside the park's many paths. The best time to see them is from mid-June to early July. The temple in the middle of the park’s lake is a great photo spot.
Photo: TECHD/Photo AC | Asukayama ParkAsukayama Park in northern Tokyo has been a popular spot for cherry blossoms since the Edo period (1603-1867), but the park is also known for its hydrangea garden, which reaches its peak in June. The Hydrangea Road has approximately 1,300 flowers, all running along a slope beside the JR Keihin Tohoku line track. Note that on a rainy day, the narrow path can become a bit treacherous, so take care when walking.
The park also has two museums, including one dedicated to the history of the local Kita ward, going right back to prehistoric times.
¥300, free for primary school students and younger children.

Hydrangeas bloom along sidewalk lanes, rock stairs and around a pond with floating light-pink water lilies, adding to the park's quiet atmosphere. The park is about a five-minute walk from Kodaira Station on the Seibu Shinjuku line.

From there, it’s a short walk to three of the area’s most majestic temples – Tokei-ji, Jochi-ji and Meigetsu-in – all of them feature an abundance of the pretty flowers in various shades of blue, purple and pink.

Major international sporting events in recent years have become just as much a showcase of their host countries as the sports themselves
and Japan is determined that in 2019 it takes full advent of the Rugby World Cup
Twelve cities will host matches during the tournament
with the whole thing kicking off on Sept 20 when Japan take on Russia at Tokyo Stadium
Tokyo Stadium is playing host to eight matches
the attention of the media and fans will also be on the little-known nearby district of Fuchu
Technically a city within the Tokyo metropolis
Fuchu is where England and France will have pre-tournament camps
the Top League’s Suntory Sungoliath which has a history of signing top international players
This former post town on the Koshu Kaido is about to be inundated with foreign visitors from 20 countries
so what then can they expect to find in a city recently rebranded as “The Mystery City”
Fuchu Station may look like any other suburban railway stop
but step out onto Baba Daimon no Keyaki Namiki which runs right under the tracks
and you find yourself seemingly in ancient woodland
where a canopy of zelkova trees covers the sky to create a tunnel
appearing to run endlessly in both directions
stands aside the 600-meter-long promenade like a sworn protector
He first planted a tree here as gratitude for victory in battle during the Heian Period
he donated a thousand zelkova saplings in 1062
praying for victory as they made their way to defeat the Abe clan of Oshu (today’s Tohoku region) and donating the seeds upon his return
The tradition continued in 1600 when a Shinto priest prayed for victory for the Tokugawa forces ahead of the battle of Sekigahara
the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate that would rule from 1600 until 1868
The whole street was designated a National Natural Monument back in December 1924
and feels like it protects the energy and spirit of Fuchu in its shade
While Fuchu may seem like part of Tokyo’s urban sprawl
its creation and significance predates the capital by well over 1,000 years
Old Edo is known to have been a mere fishing village with nothing known about it before 1457
a first shrine was built in the time of a legendary figure
it is home to a treasure house of matsuri items
you discover a collection of eight enormous and elaborate mikoshi – portable shrines lined up facing a set of drums
The drums are likely the largest you’ll ever see
the biggest one using a leather cover imported from Cameroon
which is so loud once beaten that it’s said in olden days it could be heard 100 kilometers away
A fire in 1646 saw the main hall rebuilt in 1667 and that’s what stands today
Three shrines share one building in aidenzukuri style and plates and praying labels from 1667 remain in place
ensuring the temples status in Tokyo alongside Meiji Jingu
Visitors to Japan often lament that modern architecture seldom inspires
and few old structures in Tokyo especially are left remaining
Fuchu preserved some fine examples of Japanese architecture
including those first influenced by European style
where they genuinely feel like they’ve always been
While the museum itself rivals the Edo-Tokyo Museum in Sumida with its interactive display of ancient Japan - it displays original artifacts from Fuchu’s time as a post town on the Koshu-Kaido – just step out into the gardens around it to find old post houses
Visitors to Tokyo need not want for their temple fix
but Fuchu is home to a little gem in the shape of Koanji temple
it’s guarded by carved Nio guardians beside a two-storied gate
An annex to the main temple is one the highlights
a picture perfect homely shrine straight out of a Studio Ghibli movie
with a huge hanging lantern dominating and illuminating the center of the room
The temple is also home to a tiered row of jizo statues
which while cute for photos with their knitted woolen hats and mini windmills in their hands
Jizo are protectors of children and unborn babies
carrying children to the afterlife in the case of miscarriage
Some temple districts are sedate and serene – not Fuchu
They’ve got a famous shrine and they want the world to know
via regular festivals that spill out on the streets and around the city
The grandest of these is the Kurayami Festival (darkness festival)
It’s so named because sacred things shouldn’t be seen in daylight
making it a night party for around 750,000 who attend
Those coming for the Rugby World Cup won’t miss out
the city hosts the Chestnut Festival (Kuri Matsuri) and early arrivals in August can even catch the Hassamu Sumo Festival
when kids square up with adults to battle it out in the ring

Every year, from June to mid-July, the Local Forest Museum hosts a hydrangea festival, which features around 10,000 flowers of 30 different varieties spread out over the museum’s 140,000sqm garden. On Annabelle's Road and Annabelle's Hill, you can enjoy beautiful white Annabelle hydrangeas and their sweet scents.
Aside from that, the museum features old farmhouses, townhouses, and historic buildings filled with local artefacts.

The poet Hanshan lived alone on a mountain but would often visit his friend Shide (with broom)
Painted the year after Buson moved to Kyoto from Tango
this is the earliest known of many portraits he would make of the two characters
Buson's text tells a humorous tale of how he and his poet friend Tan Taigi (on the left) were caught in a rainstorm on their way home from a haiku gathering in Kyoto
this sublime panorama testifies to Buson's mastery of the Chinese literary-school style of landscape painting
It is also interesting to compare with his earlier Tango-era landscapes

We’ve been looking into some of the ramifications of Japan’s aging population with our partners at the BBC
But living longer doesn’t necessarily mean living well
In Japan there is a bit of an old-age crime wave born out of desperation and poverty
Almost 20 percent of Japan’s prison population is now over the age of 60
where only 6 percent of prisoners are of advanced age

In his documentary Le Japon à double tour (‘Japan From Inside’)
documentary maker Philippe Couture visited Fuchu Prison to film its inner workings
sentenced to three and four years respectively
The viewer is immersed in a world that Japanese society rarely brings to light
instead preferring to laud its exceptionally low crime rates
convicted for their involvement with the yakuza or drug trafficking
Fuchu is also where foreign offenders end up
‘When you arrive and see what the system is like
I don’t have a name or an identity any more
Philippe Couture films the well-oiled and merciless mechanism of the Japanese prison system
All actions that take place there are timed
and the prisoners undertake compulsory work
but rather to the numbers that are assigned to them when they arrive
The prison director explains that when the inmates are first brought in
they are given a 40-page brochure that outlines the rules and daily exercises
as well as the actions to be taken throughout the day
‘There are more rules than there are in normal life
you will have become a socially normal person’
regardless of the price the prisoners have to pay to achieve it
we’re trained to become productive individuals’
who reveals that he earned a salary of 40 francs (less than 10 euros) in two years

it was hard to tell who won the Little League World Series
During the championship game it was a different story
A Japanese team won the series for the third time in five years
with Yuutaro Tanaka striking out 14 and Hokuto Nakahara hitting a grand slam in Tokyo Musashi-Fuchu’s 10-1 win Sunday night over East Boynton Beach
Tokyo’s players raced into center field after the game
bowing to the bust of stadium namesake Howard J
a tradition that began with Tokyo Kitasuna in 2001
“They’re kids,” said Boynton beach manager Ken Emerson
whose players had become friends with the Tokyo team during the series
the Japanese team and our team were in the cafeteria
They were just hanging out — having an East Boynton Beach time.”
Florida has put eight teams into Little League World Series title games but never won a championship
Japan (6-0) broke open a scoreless game with eight runs in the fourth inning
Eito Ono was hit by a pitch with two outs and the bases loaded
and Kazumasa Sakamoto drew a walk from Michael Broad (2-1)
Nakahara sent the next pitch over the wall in center field for a 6-0 lead and his first home run of the series
I was hoping it was going to go out,” Nakahara said through a translator
beautifully mixed fastballs and curves to keep the Boynton Beach batters off guard
“He had the same release on his change up
his curve or his fastball,” Emerson said
“They knew our power hitters were more apt to go for a high pitch
They’re just a great-coached team.”

The large fountain at the centre of Fuchu no Mori Park will be decked out with partially submerged boxes of red and white sun-patiens. The promenade leading up to the fountain however, will be lined with Tuberous Begonia of five different colours.
In the evening from 5.30pm to 9pm, the park will look especially pretty when it’s all lit up with Sonnen Glass lanterns. Make sure to walk by Nijiiro Hiroba, too, as the area will be illuminated in rainbow colours all night long.
female junior high school baseball players were firing a ball around in a “twin killing” double play practice at a ballpark in Fuchu
who were established in 2010 as a baseball club of sixth-grade elementary school girls who wanted to keep playing with their teammates even after moving onto junior high
Their parents assisted in the team’s formation
The players are from junior high schools in Fuchu and surrounding areas
“Playing baseball is part of my daily life and abandoning the sport in junior high was not an option for me,” said Haruyo Mushiga
who has been playing the sport since her first year in elementary school
A growing number of girls are pursuing a similar path to continuing playing baseball
with more teams forming in Tokyo and elsewhere
local municipalities are giving the momentum an additional boost
Female athletes previously were frequently forced to give up on committing themselves to the sport because there used to be few opportunities for junior high school girls
who devoted himself to setting up the club
said there had been only a few teams for female junior high school players in Tokyo around the time the team formed
“We organized friendly games with boys’ teams in the initial stages of our team,” Sato said
Many girls’ teams have since emerged in the capital’s 23 wards and other areas in Tokyo
“We currently have many teams to play against in the capital,” Sato said
“The environment has improved dramatically.”
said the improved playing conditions have helped players hone their skills
“We are now expected to provide increasingly advanced training programs for them,” Nishimura said
The Pink Panthers won the female freshmen's division of Tokyo’s junior high baseball championships in December
That marked a good start toward the team’s long-held dream of taking the No

which covers all female junior high baseball players in the capital
Fuchu city started efforts to revitalize the local community via women’s baseball
including signing a cooperation agreement with the Yomiuri Giants professional baseball team
which has lately incorporated an all-female amateur club
Fuchu in May last year became the first municipality in Tokyo that has been recognized by the Women’s Baseball Federation of Japan for its support activities
“It is time for our city to promote it (women’s baseball) given the trend of the times,” said Fuchu Mayor Norio Takano
The municipality likewise earmarked 160 million yen ($1.2 million) in the draft budget for fiscal 2023 with an eye on refurbishing a ballfield for residents
The establishment will be made friendlier to women under the plan by converting its restroom for use by both sexes into those separated by gender
secretary-general of the Kanto Women’s Baseball Association
said she believes female teams have been popping up in succession in the Tokyo metropolitan area in recent years
the number of junior high school girls teams had increased largely because more teams were introduced for players in primary schools
An increasing number of tournaments is another major contributing factor
who added that a particularly strong spark was provided by a national competition begun in 2016 for female junior high schoolers
The tournament is organized by the Japan Rubber Baseball Association in the hopes of allowing female athletes to continue playing baseball
As many as 45 teams from across the country competed in the seventh staging last summer in Kyoto Prefecture
To decide which team should represent Tokyo in the national competition
A total of 16 teams participated last year
Daio Paper said the competition is part of the corporation’s women empowerment program via sports
“We will be offering a place for athletes who work earnestly toward their goal of winning tournaments to fully show off their skills,” said a company public relations representative
