away from the neon-lit skyscrapers and frenzied pace of central Tokyo
the Fukagawa Edo Museum offers a portal to a bygone era
It costs only a few hundred yen to explore this carefully reconstructed neighborhood from the late Edo period (1603-1867) — a time when samurai strolled the streets and merchants sold rice and vegetables out of wooden storefronts
Unlike a typical museum filled with mannequins and glass cases
Visitors are encouraged to wander its narrow alleyways
invite themselves inside a merchant’s home or gaze up at the towering fire watchtower
The tableau is completed by a boathouse and other period-accurate structures
each built using traditional methods to capture the atmosphere of shitamachi — Tokyo’s historic downtown — in the 1840s
The experience is made even more realistic by sound and lighting effects that signal the changing time of day
brightening the markets in the morning and casting long shadows in the evening
It’s easy to imagine Edo-era residents haggling over fresh fish or gathering for a neighborhood event
volunteer guides — some of whom speak English — are on hand to offer deeper insights into daily life during the 1840s
For those looking to dive into Tokyo’s past
Fukagawa Edo is a great substitute for the much larger Edo-Tokyo Museum
which is undergoing extensive renovations and won’t reopen until next year
In a city where the past and future frequently collide
Fukagawa Edo Museum offers a chance to go back in time
Directions: A short walk from the A3 exit of Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Station
accessible by the Toei Oedo and Hanzomon metro lines
Closed on the second and fourth Mondays of each month
or the following day if a public holiday falls on those dates
Costs: 400 yen for adults; 50 yen for ages 6-18
Food: The surrounding neighborhood hosts a variety of small

Tokyo
With the 2025 sakura season now here, this is the time to visit one of Tokyo’s many cherry blossom festivals
To get a feel of what hanami (the culture of cherry blossom viewing) was like back during the Edo period (1603-1867)
you can visit the annual Oedo Fukagawa Sakura Festival that takes place along the banks of the Oyokogawa River near Monzen-nakacho Station.
The festival grounds are home to 270 somei-yoshino trees
we recommend hopping aboard an old school river boat to appreciate the gorgeous
this special boat ride will be steered by a boatman with an oar
An accompanying boat will be trailing nearby
carrying musicians playing the shamisen (traditional Japanese three-stringed instrument)
larger engine-powered boats are also available.
Along with the boat rides, the festival will also have street entertainment and food stalls on March 30 at Fukagawabasho street near Kiyosumi-shirakawa station, selling local snacks like grilled clam skewers. Come evening, the blossoms along the Oyokogawa River will be lit up from 5pm to 10pm from Higashitomi Bridge and Etchujima Bridge.

Police in Tokyo have arrested three people over a scam in which they allegedly chased down trucks with a supercar and obtained drivers' personal information to create credit cards
were arrested on suspicion of buying two smartphones worth a total of ¥299,600 on July 10
with a credit card registered to one of the truck-driver victims
allegedly committed fraud totaling about ¥99,000 in cash by returning clothes illegally purchased with another credit card.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
the couple from Tokyo's Toyosu Ward and Nomura from Yokohama would chase down trucks and
claim that their expensive vehicle had been damaged by gravel from the truck
they took pictures of the truck drivers' licenses and used that personal information to create multiple bank accounts and credit cards
They also rented several rooms under the names of the drivers to receive the cards by mail
Saito has remained silent on the fraud and theft charges
noting that Chiharu has denied the allegations while Nomura has admitted to them
According to sources at Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department
the trio is believed to have created 34 credit cards in the names of nine people using personal information they obtained through similar methods
they accrued about ¥40 million through the scheme
The money is believed to have been used to repay their supercar loans and pay rent on a high-rise condominium where the Saitos live

the tournament starts today! The first day of the tournament was blessed with good weather!Since the match is in the evening
I lightly exercised in the morning to prepare for the match. We conducted ball training and final checks on team strategies in a relaxed atmosphere at the square near the hotel.I think we were able to prepare well for the evening match
and we could see smiles! After finishing training
and the players have become more proactive in thinking and taking action
such as going to communicate with each other
I think we have become able to think for ourselves about the actions we need to take
based on the time to transport the team's luggage and what needs to be done.I feel growth on the 5th day.And finally
the first match is about to start.Tokyo will compete in the opening match of the tournament as the defending champion. The match took place in a stadium with stands installed
providing a valuable experience for the players
The opponent in the first match is the French team Stade Rennais
It is a prestigious club belonging to Ligue 1.From the start
there have been many chances and we have been able to take good shots
we capitalized on a corner kick opportunity and took the lead
a cross from the left side was headed towards the goal
and we pushed it in for an additional goal. The first half ends with a score of 2-0.Both teams will substitute members and prepare for the second half.Since the opponent is also losing
they will raise their gear and attack to aim for a goal
but the goalkeeper and the defenders were solid in their defense
making it difficult for them to take easy shots. In the second half
we created chances and often brought the ball to shoot
but we lacked shooting accuracy and couldn't score the third goal
we firmly defended our two-goal lead without conceding
such as working together in both offense and defense and winning individual one-on-one situations against opponents
such as the accuracy of individual shots and the precision of final passes.OpponentStade RennaisMatch ResultTotal: 2-0First Half: 2-0Second Half: 0-0ScorersNozawa
three matches will be held!I believe it will definitely be a tough match
and I want to do my best to achieve victory tomorrow as well

Japanese version
Known as one of the three great festivals of Edo (along with the Sanno and Kanda festivals)
the matsuri at Fukagawa’s Tomioka Hachimangu shrine takes place annually
but is celebrated in its full glory only once every three years
is well known for its unique water-splashing tradition
People enthusiastically throw water at the mikoshi (portable shrines) as an act of purification
thus creating a playful and cooling experience
As the full version of the festival was celebrated just last year
this year you can expect a scaled-down – but still impressive nonetheless – version of the festivities
which is the mikoshi parade performed by children
Featuring an impressive total of 52 mikoshi
the procession will travel from the Monzen-Nakacho intersection to Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine
Feel free to join the bystanders in splashing water at the procession – just be prepared to get wet
there’s a ballad concert at 3pm plus an energetic Iwami Kagura dance performance at 6pm
with notable highlights include the jazz performance on August 13 (3pm) and the koto and shamisen performance on August 14 (2pm).
For more information including the festival schedule, check the shrine website.
and we welcomed the morning of the third day!On the first and second days
we were energetically having breakfast from the morning. For breakfast
I had French specialties like bread and flakes
which provided the energy for today's activities. In the morning
we used the facilities utilized by the top team and academy of the prestigious French club Stade de Reims for training. In training
confirming what we have built up and organizing our defense
I believe we were able to train in a very good atmosphere
I observed the top team's training at Stade de France.I was constantly amazed by the play of players representing Japan and those active in the French league
I believe it was a very stimulating time for the players. And
took a group photo and provided individual autographs and photo opportunities
The time spent interacting with players representing Japan was very precious
we had lunch at the restaurant inside the Stade de Reims facility
We are recharging our energy for the afternoon training match
We also had a brief tour of the facilities and took a cool commemorative photo in the meeting room used by the top team players
we held a practice match with the Stade Reims academy
which will also participate in the tournament
consisting of 20 minutes x 3 periods.I think this is a match that tests how much we can challenge ourselves against a really good opponent
and whether we can showcase our play without fearing failure. At the start
they tried to connect the ball from the goalkeeper and advance
but they struggled with the opponent's intense press and spent a lot of time being pushed back
centered around the DF line and the goalkeeper
without allowing easy shots. From the middle of the match
we gradually started to break through the opponent's press and increased our ability to advance the ball
but we still struggled to enter the penalty area and could not take a shot.In defense
we applied high pressure from the front to win the ball in coordination
we also challenged ourselves to win individually
and the first half ended. From the second match
and everyone participated. While continuing the good things from the first half
we entered the opponent's court with the ball
we approached the second half by being conscious of having a vertical option from the start. The options for vertical selection have increased
and there have been more passes to the back
as well as vertical passes from the midfield and sides. However
I am overwhelmed by the speed and power that I have never felt in Japan
the way they come to take the ball with their long legs
we concede two goals. In the third instance
there were scenes where the team moved the ball and took shots
increasing the moments of challenge both as a team and as individuals. However
and we conceded 1 point,[First Half]0-1[2nd Half]0-2[3rd Match]0-1I think it was a good match that had many good parts and challenges
and being able to play against a physically superior opponent before the tournament will be beneficial for the next time.Since we haven't scored a single point
We held a meeting after dinner in the evening. We reflected on the football aspects and mainly discussed our daily lives and meals
While confirming the team's rules once again
we reconsidered our behavior during the expedition
We organized what it means to make decisions and take action on our own
I want to do my best on the fourth day as well
◇Details for Day 1 and Day 2 are here
Departed Narita Airport on April 14 (Monday)
and arrived in Paris on the morning of the second day
The approximately 20-hour long journey was challenging both mentally and physically
we will travel by bus to tour the city of Paris
and we enjoyed the sightseeing very much.First
take a photo at the Eiffel Tower. The players showed such happy smiles that you wouldn't believe they had just traveled for 20 hours
we boarded a cruise ship and had lunch while crossing the Seine River
We enjoyed croissants and baguettes sourced locally
Before taking free time on the Champs-Élysées at the end of the sightseeing
everyone will take a commemorative photo in front of the Arc de Triomphe
we split into four groups and acted separately
and took photos with each other.I hope that by challenging ourselves to "think and act on our own" in a foreign land
the unique experiences will lead to the growth of the players
One of the themes of this expedition is whether we can think and act for ourselves
we will feel something in the time and space
and we look forward to seeing how the players will take action from the third day
We will continue to do our best from tomorrow

The realisation of a cathode with various work functions (WFs) is required to maximise the potential of organic semiconductors that have various electron affinities
the barrier-free contact for electrons could only be achieved by using reactive materials
which significantly reduce the environmental stability of organic devices
We show that a stable electrode with various WFs can be produced by utilising the coordination reaction between several phenanthroline derivatives and the electrode
Although the low WF of the electrode realised by using reactive materials is specific to the material
the WF of the phenanthroline-modified electrode is tunable depending on the amount of electron transfer associated with the coordination reaction
A phenanthroline-modified electrode that has a higher electron injection efficiency than lithium fluoride has been demonstrated
The observation of various WFs induced by the coordination reaction affords strategic perspectives on the development of stable cathodes unique to organic electronics
flexible optoelectronic devices using reactive materials require stringent encapsulation
which hinders the widespread proliferation of flexible devices
we report a universal method of producing a stable electrode with various WFs by utilising the coordination reaction between five Phen derivatives and the electrode
The surface WF of the electrode can be tuned in the range of 3.29–2.43 eV by forming thin films of a Phen derivative on ITO/ZnO
although the WF of the ITO/ZnO electrode is 4.10 eV
It was found from density functional theory (DFT) calculation that the change in the WF (ΔWF) has a strong correlation with the amount of ET associated with the coordination reaction
The electron-injection efficiency of the electrode basically corresponds to its WF
Although the electron-injection efficiency of the electrode modified with p-MeO–Phen is lower than that of lithium fluoride (LiF)
the Phen-modified electrode having the lowest WF shows higher electron-injection efficiency than LiF
the air stability of the Phen-modified electrode is about ten times higher than that of LiF
and the operational stability of the OLED using the Phen-modified electrode is comparable to that of the OLED using LiF
a Chemical structure of the Phen derivatives used in this study
b Schematic illustration of coordination reaction between p-Pyrrd-Phen and Zn
c HeI UPS spectra of electrode and Phen derivatives (5 nm) on ITO/ZnO in the secondary region
d Energy-level diagram of Phen derivatives on ITO/ZnO estimated from UPS results
e HeI UPS spectra of 5-nm-thick BPhen on ITO/ZnO in the valence band region
f Summary of the correlation between ΔWF (vertical axis) and three calculated parameters (horizontal axis) that likely correlate with ΔWF
The fact that the amount of ET shows the strongest correlation with ΔWF suggests that ET has the most effect on ΔWF
It was found that the calculated amount of ET of a two-molecule system could be a good indicator of ΔWF caused by a coordination reaction
a Multilayer structure of an inverted OLED and chemical structure of the materials used in the emitting layer. b Energy-level diagram of inverted OLEDs. c Luminance (L)–voltage, d current density (J)–voltage and e EQE–J characteristics of inverted OLEDs prepared using five Phen derivatives.
a Schematic illustration of CMETLs. b Luminance (L)–voltage and c current density (J)–voltage characteristics of inverted OLEDs prepared using four CMETLs. d Images of light-emitting areas of inverted OLEDs without encapsulation as a function of storage time. Although dc current was applied to the inverted OLEDs at the time of measurement, dc current was not applied under the storage condition. e Decay in light-emitting area of inverted OLEDs.
a Multilayer structure of a cOLED and chemical structure of the materials used in the emitting layer
b Luminance (L)–voltage and c current density (J)–voltage of cOLEDs prepared using four Phen derivatives
d L–voltage and e J–voltage characteristics of cOLEDs prepared using four EILs
h Luminance–time characteristics of devices under a constant dc current
where the light-emitting area before exposure to the atmosphere is set to 1
The light-emitting area decreases in all inverted OLEDs after exposure to the atmosphere; however
the decay rate strongly depends on the CMETL
The results of our experiment clearly demonstrate that the air stability of the Phen-modified cathode is higher than that of the LiF-modified cathode
the half-life of the emitting area of inverted OLED-2 employing spin-coated p-Pyrrd–Phen is about ten times longer than that of the inverted OLED-4 employing LiF
Since the nonluminescent area increases with increasing the number of sites where electrons cannot be injected
the difference in the decay rate between inverted OLED-1 and inverted OLED-2 may originate from the difference in the number of coordination reactions
which is caused by the difference in the fabrication process
It is reasonable to suppose that the Phen-modified electrode with more electron injection sites is effective for reducing the decay rate
The air stabilities of inverted OLED-2 and inverted OLED-3
it is difficult to discuss the difference in decay rate in detail since both the chemical structure and the film thickness of the CMETL are different
It is concluded from the results for the inverted OLEDs that the electron-injection efficiency and air stability of the Phen-modified electrode are higher than those of the LiF-modified electrode
the electron-injection efficiency of which is comparable to that of PEI
is expected to be applied not only to OLEDs but also to OSCs since p-Pyrrd–Phen has advantages over PEI such as processability in a solution and vacuum
We conclude that the coordination reaction between Phen derivatives and electrodes is useful for producing a stable electrode with a low WF
and the change in the WF is mainly dominated by the amount of ET associated with the coordination reaction
the surface WF tuned by using conventional reactive materials
such as alkali metals and/or molecular n-dopants
and their air stability is compromised by the required low WF and IP
a Phen-modified electrode has many advantages over the conventional electron-injection materials
Since the Phen-modified electrode having the lowest WF exhibits better electron-injection efficiency than LiF
we believe that a great step has been made toward removing reactive materials from organic optoelectronic devices
UPS spectra of glass/ITO/ZnO/Phen derivatives were measured using a CHA analyser with a 128-channel detector; the excitation source was a HeI (21.22 eV) discharge lamp
A bias of −8.0 V was applied to each sample to separate the sample and the secondary edge for the analyser
The inverted OLEDs shown in Fig. 2a were fabricated on glass substrates coated with a 150-nm-thick ITO layer
Prior to the fabrication of organic layers
the substrate was cleaned with ultrapurified water
ZnO was deposited using a Mirror Tron sputtering system (Choshu Industry Co.
The organic layers were sequentially deposited onto the substrate without breaking the vacuum at a pressure of approximately 10−5 Pa
The film structure of an inverted OLED is ITO/ZnO (3 nm)/Phen derivative (10 nm)/Zn(BTZ)2 (10 nm)/Zn(BTZ)2:Ir(piq)3 (6 wt%
DBTPB is N4,N4′-bis(dibenzo[b,d]thiophen-4-yl)-N4,N4′-diphenylbiphenyl-4,4′-diamine
α-NPD is 4,4′-bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenyl-amino]biphenyl and HAT-CN is 1,4,5,8,9,11-hexaazatriphenylenehexacarbonitrile
a 100-nm-thick Al layer was deposited as the anode
The devices were encapsulated using a UV–epoxy resin and a glass cover in a nitrogen atmosphere after cathode formation
The conventional OLED shown in Fig. 4a was fabricated in a similar way to the above-mentioned OLEDs
Clevios HIL 1.3 (supplied by Heraeus Holding GmbH) was spun onto the substrate to form a 10-nm-thick layer
The other organic layers were sequentially deposited onto the substrate
The film structure of the conventional OLED is ITO (100 nm)/Clevios HIL 1.3 (10 nm)/α-NPD (20 nm)/4DBFP3Q (10 nm)/DIC-TRZ:Ir(mppy)3 (3 wt%
where α-NPD is 4,4′-bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenyl-amino]biphenyl
4DBFP3Q is N3,N3′′′-bis(dibenzo[b,d]furan-4-yl)-N3,N3′′′-diphenyl-[1,1′:2′,1′′:2′′,1′′′-quaterphenyl]-3,3′′′-diamine
Ir(mppy)3 is fac-tris(3-methyl-2-phenylpyridinato-N,C2′-)iridium(III) and spB-BPy2 is 6′′-(4-([2,2′-bipyridin]-6-yl)-2-(5H-dibenzo[b,d]borolyl)phenyl)-2,2′:6′,3′′-terpyridine
a 1-nm-thick EIL and a 100-nm-thick Al layer were deposited as the cathodes
The electroluminescence (EL) spectra and luminance were measured using a spectroradiometer (Minolta CS-1000)
A digital SourceMeter (Keithley 2400) and a desktop computer were used to operate the devices
We assumed that the emission from OLEDs was isotropic so that the luminance was Lambertian; thus

Actress Mai Fukagawa has been remarkably active since her graduation from Nogizaka46
She has starred in her first drama series and appeared in a morning TV series
and her momentum shows no signs of slowing down
we take a close-up look not at her on screen
we looked at a new side of her that she has never shown before and the appeal of her flexible expression

The keyword "water" came up in the fashion shoot because of Ms
Fukagawa's transparent character and the character of her last name
as I had not often been asked to construct a composition by associating it with keywords and images
I was able to experience the first snowfall
Based on the keyword "water," we further proceeded with the theme of "snow melting into a river and spring coming
How did you feel when you actually wore the clothes
deep riverI was very excited to be able to wear a variety of clothes
I wore clothes that were bright and totally different in shape and taste
so my feelings changed every time I changed
Was there any styling that you particularly liked
the all-white outfit was fun because it was like becoming one with the snow
and the brown outfit was a little more masculine and fresh
which is something I would never normally do
deep riverI tried not to be too formal or composed
and I did not think about how I would be portrayed in the photos
did not ask me to "smile" or "be conscious of the camera," so I felt as if I was just standing there
Otsuji's name as a photographer you would like to work with
I have been sneaking a look at your photos for a long time (laughs)
(Laughs.) I have always loved Otsuji's pale
so I was very happy to have my wish come true this time
deep riverFuji is a bit far away from where I lived in Iwata City
and it takes about an hour to get out to Shizuoka City
and even though I would like to do so someday
but I was not able to be a member of the group
I wanted to ask you about an episode related to the keyword "water." Speaking of water in Nogizaka46's activities
I was impressed by your visit to a waterfall in Okinawa for the hit prayer for your 7th single "Baretta
but it was really hard work because there was so much water that I couldn't breathe on my back (laughs)
water is probably more indispensable for me than for other people
and I try to soak myself in the bath every day
Fukagawa that fans are attracted to lies in her everyday
You are currently starring in the drama series "Nihon Boro Yado Kiko" ("Japan Boro Yado Travels")
Mamuang-chan (a character drawn by illustrator Wisut Ponnimit) has a store in Thailand
Are there any other places you would like to go alone
deep riverI've been told that it is better to challenge yourself from a safe place
and I have heard that people from various ethnic backgrounds are friendly even if they are not fluent in English
I would also like to visit India alone in the future
although it is a hurdle for me at the moment
It is said that some people's view of life changes when they visit India
deep riverI would like to visit there at least once in my life
I had the opportunity to visit France on business before
and the way the people living there use their time is completely different from the Japanese
they sit on the Seine and talk with their friends and loved ones
I was moved by the difference in sensibilities from the Japanese and by the world full of things I didn't know
What are you doing on your days off these days
I often wandered around the streets of Osaka
I have a technician who knows some good restaurants
so I would ask him about them and go out to eat
I see that you also go to the movies by yourself
deep riverI like to make small things that I can do without thinking
I am also thinking of learning a new Japanese dance this year
but I have always said that I want to do period dramas
so I hope that the gestures and the way I look when wearing a kimono will eventually come in handy for my work
I would also like to try a different kind of dance than the one I did during my time in Nogizaka
It is true that period dramas seem to suit you
Have you wanted to be an actress since you were in Nogizaka
deep riverI found the process of making music videos and individual music videos and the stage work
I fell in love with video work because of the group's music videos
and you had many opportunities to work with visual images
deep riverIt is easy to reach the eyes of everyone who supports me
and I thought it would be a job that I could continue no matter how old I get
There is also the fun of expressing something that is unique to you at that time
so I thought I would like to actively continue working as an actress
deep riverSome of them were in variety shows
I had the opportunity to experience many different things
and the Second Time Hatsukoi (Pan Bus)," and now you are starring in "Boro Yado (Rags to Riches)," as well as appearing in the morning TV series "Manpuku," and there is another movie coming out in the spring
It seems that things have been going very well since your graduation from Nogizaka46
deep riverIt's good that things seem to be going so well
Fans are happy when they see active activities
deep riverSuch voices are my encouragement
In "Pan Bus" you played an indifferent role
but in this "Rags to Riches" you have quite a lot of emotional ups and downs
and in "Manpuku" you speak with a Kansai dialect
and your wide range of acting really shines through
I think you have a watery charm that allows you to be anything you want to be
Pan Bus" is a film that seems to be a slice of everyday life
and director Imaizumi directed it in such a way as to "hold back a bit" and "be strong here
there are five directors for "Rags to Riches" in the 12 episodes
Each director had a different directional style
but they were able to bring out various aspects of the story
It was the first time for me to play a role that had such ups and downs
the yelling scene in the first episode was shocking and a new aspect for fans
which of your characters are you closer to in "Panbus," "Rags to Riches," or "Manpuku"
who is well known as the "Holy Mother," doesn't usually yell at people
That's why I had a hard time with the final scene in the first episode of "Rags to Riches"
It was probably the most time-consuming scene in all 12 episodes
I'm sure many of you will make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land
deep riverSome of the inns are going out of business next year..
do you have a message for your fans and the readers of HOUYHNHNM's
my activities will be conveyed to my fans and many other people
and that I will be able to influence them in some small way
This eastern Tokyo area combines history and some of the capital's best walking routes with oodles of appeal for everyone
the vast shitamachi neighborhood of Koto Ward’s Fukagawa
all enveloped in an unpretentious atmosphere
The Fukagawa Edo Museum is a good place to familiarize yourself with the area’s extensive history
there’s still plenty here to get a firsthand feel of life in the Edo Era (1603–1867)
including a life-size reconstruction of part of the old neighborhood which features a day to night light cycle for extra ambience
it will reopen with new and improved exhibits at the end of July 2022
The museum is located along Fukagawa Shiryokan-dori Shopping Street
home to many old traditional mom-and-pop stores selling goods such as kimono
you’ll find the street lined with wacky-looking scarecrows dressed up for the annual kakashi contest
Other shopping districts worth checking out are the pedestrian-only Ninjo Fukagawa Goriyaku-dori
which leads up to Fukagawa Fudo-do which has a more overtly Edo Era aesthetic
the black and white cat character created by legendary manga artist Suiho Tagawa
who spent the early years of his life in the neighborhood
The street is also vehicle-free on Sundays
With a lot of ground to cover it’s a good idea to consume a hearty lunch to keep you going
Take a leaf out of an old Fukagawa fisherman’s book and opt for the local delicacy
a hearty clam and rice dish known as Fukagawa-meshi at a branch of Fukagawajuku
The area’s growth in popularity over the years
has fueled plenty of new hangouts in which to enjoy craft beers
many establishments have chosen to renovate rather than rebuild their properties
which helps retain the neighborhood’s shitamachi vibe
Exemplifying this approach are places such as the small second-floor gallery Ondo Stay & Exhibition and comfy coffee house Fukadaso Café
with its irregular seating and antique-laden interior adding extra authenticity
Even established chains have followed suit
Popular Oakland-based roasters Blue Bottle Coffee has made good use of a spacious old factory for its flagship store that houses a roastery
kitchen and even the company’s offices
Alternatively, head over to Kiyosumi Gardens and be inspired by even more impressive scenery. Opened in 1880, the strolling-style garden is well worthy of its official designation as a Prefectural Place of Scenic Beauty.

Interview with guitarist Nobukata Kawai and vocalist Tetsuya FukagawaBy Ben Sailer Few bands with roots in hardcore are fortunate enough to release more than a handful of records before calling it a day
Even fewer overcome the kinds of lineup shifts that Envy experienced shortly after touring on their 2015 album
when vocalist Tetsuya Fukagawa departed in early 2016
post-everything screamo band’s nearly-three-decade career was coming to an end
it looked that way to the remaining members
and it almost seems like a miracle that Envy are not only still together
but able to take time to discuss their new record
The Fallen Crimson (out now via Temporary Residence)
With Fukagawa rejoining in 2018—and new members yOshi (guitar)
and Hiroki Watanabe (drums) replacing founding guitarist Masahiro Tobita and drummer Dairoku Seti—the album marks a triumphant return for one of heavy music’s most innovative and forward-thinking acts
New Noise caught up with Fukagawa and guitarist Nobukata Kawai via email to talk about how a night at the bar brought the band back from the brink of implosion
how they approached writing The Fallen Crimson with their revamped lineup
Despite this being your first full-length album in five years
it sounds as though you’ve gone through considerable changes since the release of Atheist’s Cornea
Can you elaborate on the personal and creative challenges your band collectively faced in that time which led to some members choosing to move on
would you prefer to keep those stories private
Nobukata Kawai (guitar): When Tetsu [Fukagawa
I was thinking whether to continue Envy or not
But I already had a music festival called After Hours
and Envy can’t play.” Taka responded
“Never quit; there is no future of Japan without Envy.” I decided to continue Envy with the remaining four
We invited guest vocals to our shows to have them sing Tetsu’s part and at the same time continued writing music
my voice totally didn’t match Envy’s music
and I encountered the vocoder effects pedal
When I was about to get the feeling of how to sort out a new style of Envy with this vocoder pedal
two members decided to leave the band for multiple reasons
and I guess the loss of interest in the music was one of the reasons
it was me and the bass player Naka [Manabu Nakagawa] left
and it was the first time for me to call him out since we formed the band
“It might be the time to end the whole thing,” and he replied
“Leave if you wish; I will keep Envy continuing.” If I didn’t hear those words
and I suffered not to be able to play music
Each member had their own reason for leaving the band
and I shouldn’t talk about other people’s reasons
I have a stronger trust and relationship with Tetsu
How did you come to add new members Yoshimitsu Taki
I decided everything by my instinct and gave a phone call to each of the new members
the main news was about members leaving the band
so I didn’t want to make mistakes in selecting the new members
so it was an easy decision for us and him to join the band
I didn’t have a close relationship with him
and I remember they were surprised about being asked to join Envy
and I instantly decided this was going to be the new lineup
The new three members and the three original members have a ten-year age gap
but our feelings toward music are at the same level
yOshi is a man who has a wide view and a clear vision toward everything
His participation has brought a lot of smoothness in production and communication
he is in charge of the backing guitar but is an essential
I asked Taki to join the band because he is an amazing guitar player
he has a perfect ear pitch and can play multiple instruments: drums
He was definitely playing the main role of editing and mixing the album
Rocky is a guy who is always honest and fully pitching towards music all the time
and he dedicates all his time to get prepared
This is the first album Envy have released with your new lineup
and how did it feel to be in the studio together
It sounds immediately familiar as an Envy album
which is impressive given that much change among members
Kawai: The song-composing process hasn’t changed for 25 years
I come up with the ideas and give it a simple shape
or tell the members the image of the song by playing the riff at the studio
it will be incomplete when it is submitted to the members
I believe it’s easier for the members to speak up if the song is incomplete
Envy is not a band just to make songs I like
Most of the riffs are made to be impressive
so it doesn’t take too much time to complete
The role and responsibility among the new lineup is very explicit
so the song process is literally three times faster than before
I let each member decide what riffs to play after I convey the scene I see
especially when the image is totally different from what I expect
There are various riffs that exceeded my imagination
and I even changed my riffs or song structure to align with those riffs
The three new members give me a lot of ideas while I am struggling to come up with an idea
and they have contributed a lot to [writing] this album within a tight schedule
Taki composed “Marginalized Thread,” “Eternal Memories and Reincarnation,” and “Memories and the Limit.” yOshi can also compose songs
so we are thinking of writing new songs from his riffs as well
I am willing to be challenged more than ever to keep up Envy
so people won’t call us a legacy band
was there a particular sound or direction you were consciously attempting to achieve
A lot of people say that this album has a lot of variations
it makes me feel like they are telling me there is no other band in the world who has such a big swing and needs to calm down
The word “genre” does not mean anything to us
hardcore—as long as it is good and has passion
All we wanted to do is to write a damn beautiful album
There’s a triumphant and almost upbeat feel throughout much of this album
Is this indicative of a desire to push past difficulties and produce something that reflected having overcome adversity
Kawai: I’m glad to hear that you felt that way
Each song has a different emotion toward it
but “Dawn and Gaze,” which is the first song we wrote with the new line-up
and “HIKARI,” which has a riff that was created during the previous line-up
Can you tell me the inspiration behind the title The Fallen Crimson
Tetsu Fukagawa (vocals): The title The Fallen Crimson was decided when all lyrics were written and vocals were finished recording
It actually came from a lyric which I wrote previously
and a translator I really trust translated it from Japanese to English
which I really liked and decided to use it as the title
The theme of the title is about living and eventually returning to nature
Were there any particular lyrical themes that emerged while writing this record
Fukagawa: The theme as a whole was about death (including life and living) when I was writing the lyrics
and all of it comes from my internal world and feelings
Few hardcore bands last for nearly 30 years
What keeps you interested in creating music with Envy
Kawai: It’s a difficult question to answer
to make difference among songs and discover new expression
I try not to listen to other people’s music
those musical inspirations begin to disturb me while I write songs
I intentionally avoided listening to other music
Most of the inspiration comes from our daily life
which turns into a motivation to change these emotions into songs
no one will pick us up when we are compared to other bands around the world
I can confidently say that The Fallen Crimson is our music
How much touring for this record should fans around the world expect
Kawai: Scheduling arrangements are really difficult
but we are starting to organize domestic and overseas tours
but there are lot of points that we need to cover that are not easy at all
law is a huge barrier for a Japanese band that can’t tour very long
Is there anything else about the record you’d like listeners to know
Kawai: I am confident to tell everyone that this album kicks ass
I will be delighted if you can listen to it
The Fallen Crimson is out now via Temporary Residence and available on Envy’s Bandcamp page

Fukagawa Winery is so committed to making wine in the city that it grows grapes on the rooftop of a nearby supermarket
Although the crop doesn’t yield enough to produce wine
it’s used as the yeast starter in the fermentation process
Head down the narrow path to the back of the building
where you’ll find a compact restaurant with windows looking into the production room.
you can get 20ml (¥200) or 50ml (¥300) tastings
We recommend trying the wines alongside some native Japanese grapes to add some local flavour
with a dark hue and refreshingly dry taste
with Italian-inspired dishes and full glasses and bottles of wine on offer – but if you can’t decide
you can still get a flight of three wines for ¥1,600
You can join one of the winery tours on Sundays (in Japanese), which start at 2pm and 4pm. There’s a limit of six people per tour, and reservations are required via phone or Facebook.

Plants have evolved a unique system in which the plant hormone auxin directly induces rapid degradation of the AUX/IAA family of transcription repressors by a specific form of the SCF E3 ubiquitin ligase
Other eukaryotes lack the auxin response but share the SCF degradation pathway
allowing us to transplant the auxin-inducible degron (AID) system into nonplant cells and use a small molecule to conditionally control protein stability
The AID system allowed rapid and reversible degradation of target proteins in response to auxin and enabled us to generate efficient conditional mutants of essential proteins in yeast as well as cell lines derived from chicken
thus offering a powerful tool to control protein expression and study protein function

Most of us are only too happy to see 2020 come to an end
And we all have high hopes for a better year in 2021
one popular New Year’s tradition calculated to bring good luck and assure a good year to come is a “pilgrimage” to a fixed set of shrines and temples to worship each of the seven lucky gods
Perhaps a pilgrimage is a good excuse to get out of doors at New Year’s when the weather is usually fine
when everyone wants to get out but also needs to socially distance and stay safe
a walk with brief stops at shrines or temples might be just the ticket
There are many seven lucky gods pilgrimage courses in Tokyo; this one is through the Fukagawa neighborhood on the left bank of the Sumida River
Although the neighborhood’s roots go back to the early 17th century
the ravages of the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and the 1945 American fire bombing have left few old structures
there are a number of interesting spots to visit on this walk of about 4.5 kilometers
Note that even though you’ll be outdoors most of the time
the shrines and temples ask all visitors to wear masks and practice other good hygiene measures
The official pilgrimage should be completed between Jan 1 and Jan 7
there are a couple of options to commemorate your visits
a square of white cardboard that you can have inscribed at each stop (100 each)
The other is a plastic bamboo branch (1,000 yen) to which you can attach ceramic bells representing each of the seven lucky gods
These are available at all of the sites between 9 a.m
The walk is between Monzennaka-cho subway station and Morishita subway station
It doesn’t matter which end you start from; this article starts from Monzen Nakacho
Follow the map at the bottom of the article
just a couple of minutes from Monzennaka-cho station Exit 1 is your first stop
it is regarded as the home of sumo wrestling and is also famous for its summer water festival
and is likely to be the most crowded destination on this course
the waterfront was very near here (landfill has changed things)
making it logical that Ebisu is found here
He resides in the middle of three small shrines just west of the main Tomioka Shrine
A small booth nearby offers inscriptions and ceramic bells in the shape of Ebisu
Departing from the west torii of the shrine
Not far along you’ll find two granite pillars
once the anchors of a bridge across the Aburabori river
The second stop on the pilgrimage is Fuyuki Bentendo
a small temple founded in 1705 and associated with Benten
The small temple itself is a postwar reconstruction
wealth and longevity” (just about everything you’d want for 2021)
The temple has been at this location since 1633
another 17th century Buddhist temple and home to a splendid statue of Enma
the fearsome red god of hell who judges good and evil
Shortly after crossing the Sendaibori River
you’ll see a curious bronze marker in the shape of a stack of Japanese books with old-style binding
This marks the birthplace of Takizawa Bakin (1767-1848)
well-known and prolific author of historical novels
The temple was founded in 1730 and contains a number of wooden and stone statues of Daikoku standing atop rice barrels
This section of Fukagawa is what is known as a tera-machi or temple district; it feels like every third building is a temple
take a shortcut through the grounds of Joshinji
a Nichiren Buddhist temple already busy preparing for the 800th anniversary of Nichiren’s birth in 2022
One interesting feature of these temple grounds is the multi-layered stone pagoda
a battered relic held together by baling wire
It’s nearly a kilometer to the Fukugawa Inari Shrine to visit the sixth god
consider stopping at the Fukagawa Edo Museum
with its excellent reproduction of 18th century Edo city streets
The museum is open 9:30-17:00; closed Jan 1
Admission: 400 yen (consider buying the combo ticket for 500 yen to also get admission to the Basho Museum later in this course)
a traditional Japanese-style strolling garden well worth a visit
closed throughout the 2021 New Year’s period
god of happiness and contentment and protector of small children
Hotei carries a cloth bag containing a never-ending supply of gifts
Hotei is also regarded as the Bacchus of the pantheon
so perhaps his affiliation with this Inari shrine is because sake is produced with rice
There are several interesting sights on the way to the final stop on this pilgrimage
cross the Onagi River via Mannenbashi (the bridge of 10,000 years)
the first bridges on this site were traditional arched wooden bridges
now memorialized in famous woodblock prints
This is the spot where the Onagi River flows into the Sumida River; during the Edo Period
a guardhouse stood here to monitor river traffic
also lived in a hermitage overlooking the spot
It is said that his students planted banana trees here in his honor (the pen name Basho is the old Japanese word for banana
There is now a small garden with banana trees and a statue of Basho on the site
which affords beautiful views of the river and the city
The museum has detailed displays of manuscripts and memorabilia associated with the life of this most famous poet
Of special interest are the replica of his simple hermitage and a map of his travels around Japan
There is a QR code-enabled simple English guidance available for smartphone users
The museum’s hours are the same as those of the Fukagawa Edo Museum; single admission is 200 yen if you didn’t purchase the combi ticket earlier
At last you come to Fukugawa Shinmeigu to collect the seventh lucky god
It is said that the founders of this shrine
also the early 17th century founders of the village that grew to become this neighborhood
these seven lucky gods should smile upon you during the year to come

The Freer Sackler celebrates the National Cherry Blossom Festival with an unprecedented Japanese exhibition
Kitagawa Utamaro’s elusive triptych is reunited at the Arthur M
Sackler Gallery for the first time in over 100 years
Due to loan restrictions stipulated by Charles Lang Freer in his will
this is the only time viewers will have the chance to see Cherry Blossoms at Yoshiwara
and the Freer’s own Moon at Shinagawa side by side as they were originally imagined
This comprehensive experience is a result of the recent rediscovery of Snow at Fukagawa
The painting had been lost for several decades
Painting mounted on panel; color on paper Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art Hartford
The Ella Gallup Sumner and Mary Catlin Sumner Collection Fund
The theme of a relationship to nature is what unites these works each of which features a different backdrop of a pleasure house in Edo (now Tokyo)
The different styles of the works suggest they were painted over a period of at least a dozen years
The three paintings traveled to Paris together in the 1880s and were quickly sold to different buyers
Interestingly the large triptych panels are not signed; however when compared with the rest of the drawings
and paintings in the exhibition it is clear they came from Utamaro’s hand
1793 shows the communities cherry blossom festival
1788 was purchased by Charles Lang Freer in 1903
the first post station on the road from Edo to Kyoto
It was a popular place to seek pleasurable encounters
Moon at Shinagawa (also known as Moonlight Revelry at Doz
Painting mounted on panel; color on paper Freer Gallery of Art Gift of Charles Lang Freer
Little is known about the life of Utamaro but his legacy is defined by his portrayal of the Japanese pleasure districts
He was essential in defining a style known as japonisme which commanded the attention of 19th and 20th century collectors
Scholars of his work suggest he actively took part in the scenes of pleasure he depicted
earning the reputation of a “Don Juan” in the minds of French collectors
The new scholarship offered by Julie Nelson Davis
suggests that Utamaro’s persona as a ladies man was a heavily constructed one
Branded predominately by his art dealer Hayashi Tadamasa
Utamaro is one of the first examples of an artist who adopted an effected persona to sell more work
During his career Utamaro created at least two thousand designs that were reproduced by the thousands as printed products
The depiction of teenage courtesans as a genteel cohort of accommodating women is a prevalent theme in the exhibition and a little disconcerting
it is a testament to the interest in the exotic and rich history of Japan which appeared to be a pristine utopia
This comforted westerners during a time in which vast world expansion overwhelmed the psyche
Inventing Utamaro: A Japanese Masterpiece Rediscovered is on view at the Arthur M
There is a subgenre of Japanese movies that target women of a certain age
Naoko Ogigami was once a leading purveyor of such films
beginning with her 2006 hit “Kamome Diner,” whose heroine found contentment running a Japanese-style eatery in Helsinki
Now Mai Fukagawa has taken up this female-centered mantle with “Tsundol,” a likable if predictable drama about a woman who ticks her 29th birthday off the calendar and wonders if she still has a chance to find happiness.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
Based on Akiko Oki’s autobiographical novel
the film has an unusual premise described in its lengthy Japanese title
Akiko (Fukagawa) finds herself without a job or boyfriend and only ¥100,000 in the bank
Instead of seeking temporary refuge with her parents — the default solution to this problem in Japanese films — she moves in with a 56-year-old male stranger (Arata Iura) at a friend’s introduction
Though the ukiyo-e artist Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) was more famous for his bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women)
he also produced large-scale scroll paintings
Cherry Blossom."googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
which are usually housed at different museums ("Fukagawa in the Snow" at the Okada Museum of Art
"Moon in Shinagawa" at the Freer Gallery of Art
and "Cherry Blossom at Yoshiwara" at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art)
with "Cherry Blossoms at Yoshiwara," reuniting with "Fukagawa in the Snow" for the first time in 138 years

is the main theme of the ongoing Nippon TV network show “Kanojotachi no Hanzai” (“The Crimes of Those Women”)
a 32-year-old employee of a major apparel company in this suspense drama
which is based on Dai Yokozeki’s novel of the same name
it depicts the secrets and lies hidden in women’s daily lives
Mayumi is beautiful and good at her job but feels anxious as the women around her get married one after another
who was ahead of her at their university and is now an elite doctor
a connection that brings her into proximity with a crime
The story unfolds with unpredictable twists and turns involving Tomoaki’s wife
Mayumi wanted to live a normal life and seek happiness like everyone else
but her world is turned upside down by a few coincidences and seemingly trivial thoughts
Fukagawa thinks obsession is Mayumi’s driving force
“This series sensitively depicts personal interactions and stays close to women’s hearts,” said Fukagawa
“I hope people can relate to Mayumi’s pride and fragility as a human being.”
Tomoaki is connected to all three women and symbolizes men’s selfishness and cowardice
Men may be horrified to see what happens when he makes an enemy of women
“The drama can also help [viewers] understand women’s feelings
so hopefully men like Tomoaki can watch it and learn lessons.”
and became an actress after belonging to the pop idol group Nogizaka46
Her costars Maeda and Ishii were also in similar girl groups and went through tough competitions and tight schedules
They all agree that coming from idol groups made them mentally strong
and together they create a thrilling world that makes viewers wonder what is the truth and what is a lie
“The members [of pop groups] are like irreplaceable family or friends
but inevitably there’s competition and comparison,” Fukagawa said
I got used to the schedule and learned how to pick myself up when I was mentally down.”
Fukagawa has also starred in the 2021 film “Omoide Shashin” (Photograph of memories) and recently appeared in TV dramas including “Sawako” and “Tokuso 9.”

Day 3We have reached the third day while fighting against jet lag!The accommodation before the tournament will be held at the player dormitory previously used by the French powerhouse
We are having a fulfilling time thanks to Mr
who has been taking care of us every time Tokyo goes on a trip to France
coordinating for us even on this trip!I have been taken care of by Mr
and providing facilities and grounds related to Paris Saint-Germain FC
but also communicating with the staff of each facility to ensure that the players can spend comfortably
and preparing necessary items such as water and supplements
They provide great support to help the players prepare well and win the tournament
with a variety of simple menu items such as cereal and bread
The players eat a surprisingly large amount of breakfast
much to the surprise of the cafeteria chef
in order to replenish their energy for the day's activities
We trained at the ground located just a short walk from our accommodation in the morning!Despite the light rain
our bodies were more active than yesterday
We focused on possession training and confirmed our defensive coordination
We also implemented a menu to adjust our condition while adding a bit of intensity
We had lunch and then moved to Paris Saint-Germain's new home stadium to play two 35-minute practice matches
we were overwhelmed by the opponent's speed and technique
and suffered a difficult time with repeated goals
player Haruki Matsushita managed to score a header from a corner kick
giving us a chance to gain momentum in the second half
we were able to gradually hold onto the ball and increase the number of times we approached the opponent's goal
Yuha TSUMURAYA made a dribble and entered the opponent's goal
shooting and scoring! The total score was 2-4 and we lost
but it was a game where we could feel the world-class speed
and it was a match where many challenges arose both as a team and as individuals
【Match Results】2-4[First Half]1-3 (Scorer: Haruki Matsushita)[Second Half]1-1 (Scorer: Yuha Tsumuraya)In the post-match meeting
many issues were raised such as lack of communication
and many simple technical mistakes. We will face the challenges that arose in this match and strive to absorb more and grow in tomorrow's practice match

The TSF International Tournament starts today! After having breakfast at the hotel
we played a light sweat in the nearby square in the morning to adjust our condition as the game kicked off at 18:30
we moved to the dining hall during the tournament and had lunch! At the dining venue
the chairman who is running this tournament gave an encouraging speech
"FC Tokyo has achieved a third place finish in the past
so I hope they will achieve even better results this time!"
a meeting was held and Harushiro MATSUSHITA was appointed as the captain for this tournament."Everyone has confirmed what they can do and what they should do for victory
and we have prepared for the first game!"
I arrived at the venue a little early and watched the game at a packed stadium

we were pushed by the opponent's momentum and couldn't keep up with their speed
resulting in a continuous struggle to take the ball.Conceded a goal from the opponent's corner kick in the first minute
It was a goal conceded by being caught off guard at the start.Afterwards
we gradually regained our composure and were able to hold onto the ball without fear of the opponent's pressure! In the 13th minute
Yuha TSUMURAYA broke through the opponent's defense by connecting passes from the center and right side from the DF line
and then made a direct shot into the goal from the overlap of the left side back
We caught up to a tie in the first half. After that
the FW continued to gather the ball and chances increased in front of the goal
but they were unable to finish and the first half ended.【Second Half】Both teams tried to control the ball from the start of the first half
and the battle in the midfield continued. As the game progresses
the team gradually becomes able to take the ball
but then struggles to connect passes and cannot dominate the game.During the middle of the game
we will have more possession of the ball and try to connect it from the DF line to the goal area.I have been unable to move forward as I wanted without being able to release the pressure.Gradually
the opponent began to push us back and our defense held strong
we gave away a foul and from the resulting free kick
the opponent used the side and crossed the ball into the middle
resulting in a goal.It became a goal during the most important time period
right after the start and towards the end of the game
that we had to be careful about. For the players
we will do our best to prepare for the top stage with the mindset of "everything for the win"!Thank you for your continued support

Wine made from grapes harvested this year is beginning to hit the shelves
and there are two places I have in mind to celebrate young wine produced in the heart of Tokyo
They are the vineyard on a supermarket rooftop located about 3 kilometers from Tokyo Station and Fukagawa Winery Tokyo in a nearby residential area in Koto Ward
opened this urban winery in 2016 in the traditional commercial and working-class neighborhood
hoping to get people to enjoy wine more casually
The winery began growing wine grapes two years later on the supermarket rooftop
aiming to allow people to see how grapes grow while drinking wine at their rooftop bar
picturesque vineyards of the Katsunuma district of Koshu
which is one of Japan’s leading wine production areas
this rooftop vineyard is in an area busy with traffic and shoppers day and night
about 100 grape plants yielded about 10 kilograms of grapes to be used as yeast for the wine made at the winery this year
Given their first harvest was 2 kilograms in 2020 and the fact that about 1 kilogram of grapes make a 750-milliliter bottle of wine
this year’s yield is a big step toward making wine from locally grown grapes in the heart of Tokyo some day in the future
my husband and I walked to the winery near our house to taste the young wine that has just been released
The about 60-square-meter winery produces nearly 20,000 bottles per year
In the small tasting room next to the winery
15 labels of dry wine were on offer for tasting
20 milliliters for ¥200 and 50 milliliters for ¥300
“Tokyo is a place where people gather from various places
We’re making wine that is like this big city by using grapes harvested in various parts of Japan and yeast from locally grown grapes,” vintner Kosuke Ueno said
The newly produced white and orange wines made of Delaware grapes harvested in Yamagata Prefecture ―with the yeast from the grapes produced on the supermarket rooftop ― were quite refreshing
“We produce dry wine that pairs particularly well with Japanese cuisine
such as fish-based dishes and soy sauce-based food like yakitori grilled chicken and sukiyaki,” Ueno said
The winery allows visitors to see its production area on Sunday afternoons after making a reservation via Instagram or Messenger or by phone
We joined a couple living near the winery and a woman who came all the way from Nagano Prefecture to see it
Ueno explained the process of winemaking by holding up laminated photos and showing some of the equipment
The winery sometimes recruits volunteers through social media to get people involved in winemaking
harvesting and preparing grapes and even sinking bottled wine into Tokyo Bay as a joint project to experiment with underwater wine aging with the local Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology
Such opportunities help winemaking – but also sometimes unexpectedly turn into matchmaking
“Two volunteers who participated in our winemaking got married and they gave their families and friends our wine as a gift at their wedding,” Ueno said
This winery seems to be bringing joy and happiness to people in various ways
For more information about the winery, visit their website at https://www.fukagawine.tokyo/en

Print I love morning foods of all kinds
and I worked through college scrambling eggs and cranking out waffles at a bed-and-breakfast in Boston
I rarely wake up wanting more than a few spoonfuls of yogurt or a handful of peanuts
a small Japanese-French restaurant in Little Tokyo that opened a few months ago
Chef-owner Akira Hirose serves bento boxes and soba for lunch — and also veers into duck confit and boeuf Bourguignon — but his asa gohan (breakfast) menu centers around a traditional combination of dishes
sits in the center of a black lacquered tray surrounded by modest portions of miso soup
tofu topped with bonito and tsukemono (salt pickles
It’s everything I want in a workday breakfast: fortifying
Azay is one of the few Los Angeles restaurants I know of that serves a traditional Japanese breakfast set — a variation on ichiju sansai
rice and several side dishes — but the meal has been slowly making more appearances across the city
Hotel breakfasts in Japan can become elaborate feasts; the teishoku (set meal) breakfasts available in restaurants in L.A
tend to be more attuned to median appetites
presenting five to seven savory dishes direct in their seasoning and appeal
Their broadening presence is another expression of our profound and ever-evolving Japanese dining culture
Fukagawa, hidden down a walkway in the center of Gardena’s rambling Pacific Square Shopping Center, has long been one of the region’s only reliable sources for Japanese breakfast sets. The restaurant has four combinations featuring eggs (dashimaki tamago
grilled fish (salmon or mackerel) or steak
Combo D brings you some of everything; it’s my standard order
The portions are more generous than at Azay; the restaurant serves breakfast into early afternoon
I’m more likely to eat this spread for lunch
Akira Akuto and Nick Montgomery hijacked Instagram late in 2008 with their tributes to Japanese convenience-store sandwiches at Konbi in Echo Park
The cooking reaches well past photogenic egg salad sandos: exquisite
austere vegetable dishes; chocolate croissants served hot; deeply caramelized canelés; and a custardy date tart from pastry chef Jen Yee
Last year Akuto and Montgomery added gorgeously composed Japanese-style breakfasts: One meal in July included broiled black cod perfumed with yuzu
broccolini with sesame and almond dressing
Konbi has 10 seats
and Akuto and Montgomery recently decided that the full breakfasts were too taxing on their tiny kitchen to execute consistently
They’re working on some rice-based dishes riffing on their sets
I’m still hoping they might consider bringing back the traditional breakfast as a special now and then
Echo Park hasn’t quite lost its Japanese-style breakfasts yet
In November chefs Todd Chang and Johnny Lee began collaborating on Gatsu Gatsu
Their first two menus came with either salmon shioyaki (in which the fish is salt-cured and grilled) or gindara nitsuke (black cod simmered in shoyu) along with the classics: rice
Their approach to produce can lean slightly more intricate: agebitashi eggplant
sweet potato and bell pepper (flash-fried and then marinated in dashi)
turnips and their greens in miso-citrus sauce
teishoku just made sense as a response to the everyday hustle experienced by your average Angeleno,” Chang said via email
Chang and Lee are considering either Jan. 19 or Jan. 26 for their next installment. Check their Instagram for updates
I can walk to their pop-up space from my apartment; I’ll likely see you there
The great late chef John Santi once told me that the presentation and look of the food accounted for half the taste
Aesthetics and the idea of “we feast first with our eyes” has never been more important to a larger swath of people
But if this is about whether I feel that spectacular visuals account for how I register flavors
Appearance can affect my mood: sedating or rousing or depressing or intriguing
I can’t wait to put that in my mouth.” But the taste buds don’t lie
An architecturally riveting plate of food can have the texture of Styrofoam and taste like nothing
A murky brown stew layered with vegetables and meats and spice often delivers way more satisfaction than edible sculptures
You can put the stew in a beautiful ceramic bowl to add an element of beauty — and that’s fine — but I care much more about how the stew tastes than how it looks
A formless brown stew doesn’t taste half as delicious to me
And of course it’s wonderful if something tastes as spectacular as it looks. I’d say 97% of the things on my Instagram account fall in this category — in other words
I don’t post pretty pics of food that doesn’t also taste great to me
There have been concerns that traditional foods of many heritages might disappear in a culture that puts so much value on the phone pics they snap; I honestly don’t believe that’s happening yet on levels high enough to cause serious concern (at least
I’ll start loading up my Insta feed with foods that strike me as important and deeply satisfying

but we suffered a defeat in the first match and couldn't advance to the final tournament
and with little time to rest between matches
we couldn't fully get into the game and conceded 4 goals in the first half
and we headed into the second half.In the second half
we recovered and fought back by physically challenging the opponent and showing our determination
Bryan made a breakthrough and earned a penalty kick
which Okada calmly converted into a goal. The defense concentrated and held the opponent scoreless
and in the second half we managed to score 1-0
the players interacted with players from other teams
and they felt a sense of strength and growth as they actively engaged in conversation without hesitation
It was a day that made me feel the toughness of the top league and the toughness of overseas
what can be understood and what cannot be understood among that level
