Photographer Ana María Arévalo Gosen returned to Venezuela after eight years away
and began to document her country’s decline through the prism of women in the penal system
it felt like stepping into a different world
and the infrastructure of what was once one of Latin America’s most promising nations was crumbling
That year, I began the project Días Eternos [Eternal Days]
driven by my need to explore one of the root causes of the crisis in my country: the perpetual breakdown of the penitentiary system
This is evident in the flawed ways criminals are sentenced
crimes are investigated and minorities are judged
This is one of the final images I took after two years visiting prisons and detention centres
The photograph was taken in December 2018 in the Ana María Campos II prison in Maracaibo
The women were preparing the net for volleyball
Although they have access to provisions such as food
and computer training programmes in this prison
with frequent shortages of water and electricity
Nearly two thirds (62%) of Venezuela’s total prison population is held in detention centres
and often women having to mix in with male detainees
Some of the women I spoke to that day said they felt guilty that they had escaped the inhumane conditions of the detention centres by being transferred to a state prison
But in many ways life in the prisons is harsher. Women cannot have visitors or make phone calls. The prison enforces the government’s “reformation of the new woman” motto, requiring inmates to participate in military-style rituals, including saluting and reciting “Independence and socialist fatherland. We will live, and we will win. Chávez lives, and the fight continues.”
Read moreWomen represent only 7.8% of the total prison population
yet they endure some of the worst conditions
Nearly all incarcerated women in Venezuela are mothers
adding the emotional toll of separation from their children to their suffering
Venezuelan law allows children to stay with their mothers until the age of three
lack maternity wards or facilities for them to be together
As women in Venezuela are often the primary breadwinners
their imprisonment leaves children without the love of their mothers and crucial economic support
This project looks at how the justice system across Latin America disproportionately affects the region’s poorest and most vulnerable people. What began in Venezuela has since expanded to Guatemala and El Salvador
where I have also visited prisons to document the conditions for women
I aim to continue working across the continent
Justice is not only fractured in my country – it is lost across the region

The survival of the letter, dated Jan. 4, 1783, is one of its most remarkable features, according to Gary Gosen, proprietor of Manhattan’s Gosen Rare Books & Old Paper. Mr. Gosen has brought the letter to light and is offering it for sale. (For more information, contact Mr. Gosen at [email protected].)
a letter like this would be immediately thrown into the fire after being read,” Mr
and not because of references to Dear Fanny
It’s because of passages later mentioning precise information on battles at sea during the Revolutionary War
information presenting an immediate danger to writer and recipient alike
Gosen said that if agents of the Crown had gotten their hands on this letter
both men would have had a quick date with a British hangman
The brothers were officers in the nascent American Navy
defined as commanders of privately owned and armed vessels commissioned by a state
targeting vessels of commerce commanded by the enemy

This passage shows the extent of the American Navy’s reach during the revolutionary War
with accounts of action off the Netherlands
he notes that Captain Thomas Updike Fosdick
served in the militia company of Captain Nathan Hale (yes
and participated in that unit’s exploits prior to Hale’s execution in late 1776
a week before the Battle of Fort Washington
Thomas Fosdick drew a commendation from General George Washington for attempting to drive a fire-ship deep into the British forces assembling for the Battle of Fort Washington,” Mr
“Thomas Updike Fosdick was taken prisoner in that battle and later paroled
Fosdick returned to garrison duty guarding New London and was part of the 1781 fighting there that ended with the burning of the town.”
Gosen has done significant research and unearthed evidence that Captain Nicoll Fosdick was
He’s found a sworn affidavit in the National Archives dated 1833 that
“One Peter Vaill filed an application for his Revolutionary War Pension and Land Benefits
In his application he stated: ‘In the month of October 1780 I enlisted at New London as a marine for a cruise in the Privateer Randolph commanded by Captain Nicoll Fosdick …’ Vaill’s application gives an account of the engagements and prizes taken from the British during his voyage to the West Indies
establishing Captain Nicoll Fosdick as a successful privateer commander.”
It’s said that bravery is marching toward the sound of gunfire for a good cause; that’s exactly what Thomas Fosdick did after hearing reports of the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19

A GOP state representative from Ballwin has resigned suddenly for unspecified personal reasons
It’s the latest reverberation for a legislature still reeling from scandals that led to two resignations last session
Louis Public Radio that he was stepping down from his seat effectively immediately
Gosen served as the chairman of the House Insurance Committee and represented a GOP-leaning district that included parts of western St
“There’s been several rumors floating around the Capitol,” Gosen said
It’s personal things that need to be handled between myself and my family
And that’s where we’re addressing these issues now
I didn’t want to add to any issues up here in the House with some of the ethics reform
I didn’t want anything happening personal to play any role in any of that.”
What Gosen is alluding to is a push from GOP leadership
made that issue a priority after his predecessor
resigned when it was revealed he exchanged sexually charged texts with interns
also resigned last year after several interns accused him of sexual harassment
Asked to elaborate on what his “personal reasons” for resigning were and if they included infidelity
“If it was a business issue or a campaign issue
I’d be glad to elaborate on it,” Gosen said
Richardson said Gosen made the “right decision” resigning
He signaled that Gosen had done something that warranted his departure from the legislature.
I said the actions of this body would not be defined by a few
That’s why when I was made aware of the situation
I asked him to resign last night,” Richardson said
“I believe as I said on the first day of session that as ‘individuals we must be at our best and as an institution we must be better.’ We owe nothing less to our state and to the people we represent.”
Richardson didn't provide more specificity on "the situation" he alluded to in his statement
When asked if there was an ethics complaint filed
"What I can tell you is we have a very firm process in place that will be followed to handle any and all complaints that get filed," Richardson said
"There are also things that need to be addressed that extend beyond our specific ‘in the building’ policy
consistent with that and consistent with the statement that I released this morning
He made the right decision this morning to do that
And that’s what we’re going to do today."
When asked if it gave him any pause that he was resigning for “personal reasons” only months after Diehl’s high-profile departure
Gosen said: “I think this issue is substantially different than what was last year
Gosen went onto say he had no regrets about running for the state legislature
“I’ve enjoyed my time here very much,” Gosen said
“I think the opportunity in the Missouri House and the Missouri Senate and any role up here in Jefferson City is an amazing opportunity
We’ve got a group of great people up here from both sides of the aisle taking advantage of that opportunity to serve their constituents.”
Gosen’s departure comes after Richardson instituted rules and regulations concerning its intern program – including mandatory sexual harassment training
It also arose after House passed curbs on lobbyist gifts and restrictions on how quickly lawmakers can become lobbyists
But when asked before Gosen’s resignation if lawmakers had learned from the resignations of Diehl and LeVota, state Sen. Jill Schupp struck a pessimistic tone.
no matter where you go there are always some bad apples who take advantage of their position,” Schupp
sometimes we forget that we are always accountable to the people
I’d like to think that the better side of our nature takes over
That’s simply not always going to be the case
“I don’t know how long those lessons will be heeded.”

“I’ve decided to resign from the Missouri House,” Gosen said in a statement to the Missouri Times
“With the current events going on at the Capitol
it’s time for me to focus on my family
I’ll have a more complete statement at a later date.”
There have been many rumors circulating the Capitol this week leading up to the resignation
There is a mandatory House Republican caucus meeting scheduled for 11:00 a.m

the Leica Oskar Barnack Award – or LOBA – selects a shortlist of nine photographers in the main category and four in the newcomer category
Venezuelan photographer Ana María Arévalo Gosen’s series Días Eternos was announced as the 2021 winner
German photographer Emile Ducke’s Kolyma – Along the Road of Bones won him the LOBA newcomer prize
Ducke was raised in Germany but is based in Moscow
His series Kolyma – Along the Road of Bones charts a 2000km strip of road in Kolyma
and one of the coldest inhabited locations in the world
The road was built between 1932 to 1953 by incarcerated Gulag workers during Stalin’s rule
a part of history often deliberately overlooked by the Russian government
they say it is winter for 12 months of the year
the young photographer travelled the region through December – the harshest point of winter – creating both drone-made aerial shots and portraits of the locals

he moved away from photojournalism to begin his own semi-surreal style
“There is no conventional moment of truth in my pictures

He is particularly interested in documentary ethics
mixed with violence and crime rooted in society
is accentuated inside the preventive detention centers
The procedural delays are separating thousands of women from their families and children for months or even years
The plight of women in Latin American prisons is little discussed
yet it has repercussions for the entire region
and violence destroys families and affects our society through how criminals are tried
A woman's incarceration does not end with her; it affects an entire generation
and women are left vulnerable and stigmatized for life
the Ministry of Penitentiary Services has stopped transferring detainees to prisons
thus keeping them in provisional detention centers managed by the municipal police or the national police
This policy was intended to reduce the incidence of violence; however
it has resulted in significant human rights violations
can last for years while women await trial and sentencing
Although the national police made an effort to open the first women-only detention center in 2021
most are still mixed and critically overcrowded
they rely on outside help for emotional support and material aid to compensate for the State's inability to provide food
In a country with permanent hyperinflation
A woman in detention costs between 30$ and 60$ per week
and the Venezuelan minimum wage is 8$ dollars
Many plead guilty to escape detention centers
this hope has been further frustrated by the "emergency regime" declared in March 2022
which launched a massive crackdown on suspected gang members
As the country with the largest prison population in the world
have led to the closure of the only women-only prisons
A combination of poor policies and violent planning further marginalizes this population
It accentuates the gravity of the situation
women who undergo abortions risk long prison sentences
as do those who suffer miscarriages or obstetric emergencies
most Salvadorans have applauded this palliative vision of eliminating gangs rooted in society
In a place where physical safety and economic opportunities are hard to come by
many girls and young women join gangs for protection and control over their lives and see them as a refuge from violent and abusive families
This imbalance in the justice system is not limited to these two countries
2022 was the year of arbitrary arrests of members of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG)
dismantled more than 50 corruption structures
Despite being a country where 70% of the population is indigenous
based on conciliation instead of punishment (although many ends in lynchings as part of the punishment imposed)
are not legitimized by the constitution of this country
Indigenous women who are not fluent in Spanish do not have a translator during state trials
so they do not understand what is happening during their process
of this gendered prison experience is motherhood; the detention centers are not adequate for mothers to be with their children
sometimes isolated from them out of shame for them to see their living conditions
the closure of the women's prison left them without a maternity ward and incommunicado with their children
there is no prior psychological preparation for the separation from their children once they turn four years old
This alienated motherhood affects their children and their entire family constellation
photographing and exposing the women's prison experience is an urgent political intervention in human rights
This work in progress intends to cover every country in Latin America
I will go to the Caribbean Island of the Dominican Republic to cover the new government's initiatives to improve women's incarceration conditions

shares three lessons the chocolate brand learned on its journey to a better partnership with YouTube
Choosing to work for Ferrero was among the easier decisions of my career
The quality of its chocolates and the iconic place it held in my childhood drew me in then and has me here now
I learned Ferrero has always been as committed to brand safety as it is to creating world-class confectionery
this core brand principle was a simple proposition
because the world’s leading media environments were heavily curated
I would not have anticipated that our commitment to suitable content would disrupt our investments with one of the largest content platforms and an advertising mecca
when reports revealed advertisements were appearing adjacent to inappropriate
we were forced to rethink whether YouTube was the right platform for our brands
Advertising comes with great responsibility; even though we had experienced strong performance on YouTube
we quickly decided to pause our YouTube campaigns while Google took measures to create a safer platform
For over a year, we chose not to advertise on YouTube, but we kept an eye on its progress. We saw significant improvements in its products and policies around the issue of brand safety, including the removal of egregious content from the platform
and the strengthening of its community guidelines
We also took note when YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki committed to responsibility as the company’s No
we felt comfortable reopening conversations around advertising on YouTube
our relationship with YouTube pivoted from a brand safety conversation to one more focused on brand suitability
we resumed responsible advertising on YouTube
We started with very restrictive suitability measures
we used content-label exclusions to opt out of whole categories to ensure safety for our brand
even though those restrictions came at the cost of audience reach
but we felt this was a trade-off we had to make to protect our brand
when we worked more closely with our Google team to further develop our content suitability playbook
The goal of this process was to gain a clear understanding of how our suitability preferences matched up to YouTube’s controls and what had changed during the previous year
We learned that we could adjust our approach on certain elements
along with three key lessons we learned along the way
We had been missing the opportunity to have our ads in front of many popular and trending videos
eight of the Top 10 trending videos in Germany in 2020 fell under content labels that we had been excluding
we learned that many of our restrictions were not leading to incremental safety improvements
Beginning in 2018, we reviewed our exclusions and realized that we would be better managed through inventory modes
while continuing to use inventory modes as our main “safety lever” in 2019 and beyond
Because we were already protected by YouTube’s updated safety measures and technologies
there was no longer a need for us to continue overlaying additional content label restrictions and overexcluding safe and popular inventory
Whenever digital platforms, YouTube included, have struggled through brand safety crises, marketers have pulled back on the reins. Ferrero was no different. But YouTube has spent years enhancing its brand safety technologies, as evidenced by its Media Rating Council accreditation
Knowing YouTube was the first digital platform to receive this stamp of approval for content-level brand safety made us feel comfortable loosening those reins and trusting that our brand would be protected
YouTube’s technology now limits the need for advertisers to rely on controls for brand safety
it allows us to use them for their intended purpose: suitability
It would be easy to stop here and celebrate our successes
the only sound approach is to repeatedly reassess
Ferrero has instituted regular pulse checks to monitor how platforms live up to their responsibilities
Safety is always top of mind for brand marketers
But as the world’s largest content provider evolves
brands should now feel empowered to pivot and focus instead on their own suitability settings
not as a defensive fortification but as a set of dials they can use to calibrate an environment that aligns best with their values
The result will be stronger growth and better ad performance without sacrificing safety or trust

and the current chair of the Council of Ontario Construction Associations (COCA)
is being inducted into the Grand Valley Construction Association’s (GVCA) Hall of Fame
He was nominated unanimously by the board of the association
“Don has worked really hard for the greater good of the overall industry,” said GVCA president Martha George
“He has worked to make the industry a better place.”
“We are thrilled here at COCA to learn that Don has been inducted into the Hall of Fame,” he said
“I can’t think of anyone more worthy to receive this recognition
He has made huge contributions at both COCA and the GVCA.”
The Hall of Fame was established by the GVCA in 2006 to recognize an individual who has made a significant contribution to both the betterment of the industry and the local community
COCA chair lands on OCOT’s board of governors
Gosen, who joined the GVCA board in 1999 and served as chair in 2007/2008, said he was taken by surprise when informed of his impending induction.
“I never imagined my name would be put forward,” he said. “I remember when this (induction) process started. I have immense respect for those individuals who were previously recognized.”
Last year, industry veteran Jack Ball, a former president of Ball Brothers Ltd. of Kitchener, Ont., was inducted.
A graduate of Conestoga College’s engineering technologist program, Gosen joined Gosen Electric in 1977 after his father became ill and was no longer able to run the company which he had founded in 1956.
“I came back to close up the company,” he recalled. “The word is that I’m not very good at closing things up.” In 1978, Gosen became president of the company, which is active in the industrial, institutional, commercial and residential sectors.
In addition to serving at COCA and the GVCA, Gosen has also acted as president of the Ontario Electrical League and vice-chair of the Electrical Contractors Registration Agency.
Late last year, he was appointed to the board of governors of the Ontario College of Trades.
He has also served as a member of the Waterloo Region District School Board’s Fast Forward program, which gives students the opportunity to obtain experience in the workplace before leaving high school.
Gosen plans to retire in mid-October, turning over the running of Gosen Electric to a new generation. The objective is to ensure the long-term health and success of the company “while operating to the benefit of our customers, staff, suppliers and the community,” he said.
The changing of the guard at Gosen Electric will free up more time for Gosen’s responsibilities at COCA and elsewhere. Gosen is committed to serving a third year as chair of COCA, which is slated to hold its annual general meeting next month.
“I really like the idea that I will still be involved in the industry,” he said. “I like working with Ian (Cunningham) and Sue (Ramsay) and enjoy our involvement at Queen’s Park. While that (dealing with the provincial government) can be frustrating and challenging at times, I feel we are accomplishing things on behalf of the industry.”
Gosen will be formally inducted into the GVCA Hall of Fame Feb. 18 at an association event in Kitchener.

Ana María Arévalo Gosen was just 16 years old when she decided to terminate her pregnancy
“Horrifying” and “traumatic” are the words the photographer uses to describe the procedure
which is punishable by up to six years in prison in her native Venezuela
coupled with high maternal death rates and poor access to contraceptives
leave many young women like Gosen with few reproductive choices
“I was working on another project in this pretrial detention centre in Venezuela
when I realised that a lot of the teenagers detained there were mothers,” Gosen recalls
“The reason they were in prison or detained was that they were accused of robbery
they would tell you that they were hungry and that they didn’t have a choice but to commit the crime.”
Gosen began to research these young women and others like them
She describes what she discovered as a crisis in young motherhood
With 96 cases per every 1,000 women aged between 15 and 19
the average rate of teenage pregnancy in Venezuela is double that of the rest of Latin America
While this is not a new issue for Gosen’s home country
it is one that remains underdiscussed and therefore unresolved
The photographer began exploring this difficult topic
documenting Venezuela’s young mothers and their families in the initmate photo essay
The work was recently awarded the Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award
which is granted annually to a professional woman photographer whose work addresses an important social
Gosen hopes the award grant of £2,500 will allow her to continue her work – and to focus on offering solutions to the many young women she’s met
there is one 21-year-old second-time mother whose story sticks in her mind
The photographer recalls the obstetric violence this young woman experienced
the hospitals she gave birth in that had neither water nor light
and the physical and emotional scars she was left with as a result
“These conversations are really hard to have with them,” Gosen acknowledges
in gaining the trust of Venezuela’s young mothers
Grandmothers at 30 is a testament to the strength of the relationships she built
the project’s images are impressive in their mundanity
indicating a complete acceptance of Gosen’s presence
they offer a striking juxtaposition between the blue skies of Venezuela
cramped homes of the country’s young mothers
Although these images are now award-winning
the photographer has no plans to move on from Grandmothers at 30 – instead
She is planning a documentary film that will be delivered to impacted communities
wants to bring gynaecologists and obstetricians to schools and
hopes to contribute to a change in Venezuela’s abortion laws
I already got the therapy,” Gosen says passionately
that’s one of the main reasons why I’m doing this now
because I could have been one of these girls.”
Louis-area legislator who recently resigned from the Missouri House is acknowledging he had an extramarital affair
Don Gosen told The Associated Press on Friday that the woman was from southeast Missouri and never worked in government or as a lobbyist
The married father of three says the relationship "went awry," and that it was his only extramarital affair
Gosen resigned Wednesday after being asked to do so by House Speaker Todd Richardson
He's the third lawmaker to resign under pressure in the past year
then-House Speaker John Diehl resigned after acknowledging he exchanged sexually charged text messages with a Capitol intern

There are certain questions we hear more often than others
The most frequent is whether to invest in content creators
Why should a brand manager invest or increase investments in influencer marketing
The answer lies in the effectiveness and unique characteristics of content creators themselves
They are the creative and the channel all rolled into one
It also lies in their ability to effectively tap into younger generations; their immunity to ad blindness; their deep engagement with audiences; and their proven ability to help brands sell more
It’s also important to recognise one very important fact: consumers rarely communicate with brands
and through that communication it is possible to gauge consumer sentiment
content creators help brands build more personal consumer connections
The most successful partnerships are those that involve the creators themselves
No one wakes up in the morning wondering what a certain brand is up to
keen to know what their favourite creators have been doing
it is their content that captures people’s attention
You’ve also got to banish any belief that working with content creators is a PR exercise
and ticking some imaginary influencer marketing box
It’s about shifting the focus to media and the creation of meaningful conversations
We’re not talking ambiguous metrics such as reach and views here
Deep engagement is what brands should be focusing on
the vanity metrics of likes and comments are good for guiding consumer sentiment
It’s far easier now to quantify that intent
As more and more people begin their journey on social media on the discovery side of platforms
Our role as a next-gen digital creators agency for brands is to help companies maximise the potential of content creators
We do so by helping brands formulate ideas
and using global data tools for analysing and measuring results
and as the success and importance of content creators grows
and on maintaining great relationships with content creators will create greater value for our clients

one Grand Rapids family is celebrating its safe journey from Europe to the United States that same week
Descendents of Gosen (George) and Wilhelmina Gritter are expecting more than 150 relatives at a gathering that will mark the 100th anniversary of the family's move to America
at the exact same time as the Titanic made its infamous voyage
The Rotterdam was one of the ships summoned to help but was too far away and its passengers didn't learn of the tragedy until after they reached America
Among the precious pictures and scrapbooks the Gritter ancestors have kept is a carefully preserved newspaper copy headlining the event
The Gritters lived in the village of Daarleveen
where Gosen used his own boat to transport "turf," or bricks of dried peat used for fuel
One of George's brothers came to America a year earlier and often wrote to encourage his family to follow
calling the United States "the land of milk and honey."
it was a no-go until George's boat sank
It was difficult enough to leave her parents and siblings behind
but Wilhelmina drew the line at leaving her older children
Her determination to keep the family together was tested again when one of the children was pulled aside for more inspection at Ellis Island
She vowed to return the entire family if Albert was sent back
but in the end he was passed through the immigration inspection
The Gritter family kept journals about that journey across the sea and loved sharing stories about the ship bunks
Among the specific details are their surprise upon meeting a Polish family and realizing for the first time "not everyone spoke Dutch."
One of the most memorable events aboard the Rotterdam was Gosen's Sunday service
Since there wasn't a minister on board
Reunion organizers are planning a brief reenactment of that service which took place on April 14
exactly 100 years to the day as the family celebration
so I am sure it wasn't brief (then) but the re-enactment will be," said Ellen Gritter Walters
one of Gosen and Wilhelmina's children
The ship stories include celebrating two of the children's birthdays while on board and seeing the "beautiful lights of New York City between 4 and 5 a.m
in the morning" and waiting to see the Statue of Liberty at dawn
New York was never considered the final destination
The family immediately boarded a train for a two day trip to Grand Rapids
They had never seen a banana and one of the boys tried to bite into one with the peel on
offering an "extra bright apple," which was really a tomato
The Gritters were met at Union Station in Grand Rapids by their brother
Everything they owned was stuffed into bed sheets
carried part of the family belongings from the station to Grandville Avenue as they marched to their new home
"Can you imagine the one that had to carry the chamber pot," said Ruth Sterkenburg
The family stayed with friends and family for a bit
but soon settled in their first American home on Coate Street SW
just a short distance from Grandville Avenue Christian Reformed Church
Early memories include going to Heckman's to get the odd-shaped and broken cookies for 15 cents a bag
The stories are numerous and have been handed down by word-of-mouth and in journals and scrapbooks to the couple's 52 grandchildren
most of whom reside in the greater Grand Rapids area
The oldest living grandchild of Gosen and Wilhelmina is 93 and the youngest is 60
The family's influence on the area is evident
Two of the 12 children became prominent ministers in the Christian Reformed Church
with both at one time serving as president of the denomination's Synod and one chairing the board of trustees at Calvin College
Others became business men and many Grand Rapidians will remember the Gritters' butter and egg operations
one of which is still operating in the Holland area
One son was a longtime Grand Rapids city commissioner and had the honor of welcoming Queen Juliana when she came from the Netherlands to thank the United States for their help in WWII
said that while Garrit was "told about the proper protocol
he couldn't make himself bow to the queen
so he reached out his hand and in perfect Dutch he said
"I'm pleased to meet you." When she replied
"You speak good Dutch," he responded "Just as good as you do." For his outspokenness
Garrit was honored when the prince asked to be seated next to him for dinner
The number of great and great-great grandchildren has not been calculated
many of them will attend the 100th anniversary next week to share their memories
The event program is fashioned after a boarding pass for the SS Rotterdam
It carried 3,575 passengers -- 520 first-class
In addition to the worship service with the same prayer and reflections as Gosen's used in 1912
the afternoon will offer a drama of the journey to America
a retelling of the story when Garritt met the queen
