The bridge, which connects the city center to an industrial road and a coastal industrial zone, is expected to revitalize the regional economy through increased flow of goods and people. The new bridge is a municipal road connecting Numadate and Hattaro in the city. According to the municipal government, the Ohashi bridge was originally built in 1955, but its corrosion due to aging and its narrow width became a problem, leading to the construction of the new bridge to start in fiscal 2018. The new bridge is approximately 300 meters long and 11.5 meters wide. It has a one-lane road in each direction and sidewalks that are 2 meters wide each. The total cost of the project was approximately ¥10.3 billion. On March 22, a commemorative ceremony with a brass band performance and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held with about 150 people, including city officials and local elementary and junior high school students, in attendance. Hachinohe Mayor Yuichi Kumagai said, “I hope that the reborn bridge will be loved by citizens and link to the future.” Our weekly ePaper presents the most noteworthy recent topics in an exciting, readable fomat. At Hachinohe Park, a short 40-minute drive from Misawa Air Base, you and your whole family can enjoy the sprawling botanical garden as well as a zoo and children’s amusement park. The rose garden at the park boasts over 650 rose bushes spanning dozens of varieties. Some include those named after royal figures like Queen Elizabeth and Japan’s Empress Michiko and Princess Aiko. Roses in the park’s garden are in full bloom, so make sure to get over to the park soon. MORIOKA--Noriko Sugiyama doesn’t quite get why others make a fuss of her art when she simply uses bits of old kimono fabric and obi sashes instead of paint to bring her works to life the 76-year-old chiropractor is an award-winning upcycling artist in Japan and oversees It is quite an achievement seeing as she is self-taught and only took up painting five years ago after finding a packet of marker pens discarded on the street she moved from Saitama Prefecture to the Iwate prefectural capital where she has relatives Sugiyama qualified as a chiropractor and opened her practice the following year Sugiyama came across a packet of 24 colored marker pens discarded at a garbage collection point in front of her home Seeing as they still appeared to be usable she thought it would be a waste to leave the pens and took them home She then bought a small sketchbook and started to draw landscapes in a freewheeling manner Although Sugiyama hadn’t drawn since she was in elementary school she quickly found herself painting trees and rivers without difficulty She wondered that the landscapes of her native Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan where she spent her childhood remained in her head Sugiyama showed her paintings to a friend with a critical eye and was encouraged to enter a contest This led her to submit a painting to the Iwate Arts Festival that year to see what might be possible The artwork was accepted and put on display at the venue She takes pleasure in painting at night after work Sugiyama didn’t take any lessons from anyone and simply draws whatever comes to mind She now has at least 200 works under her belt she used water to blur the ink and added paint when she was drawing she remembered that her mother had stored numerous kimono and obi in chests of drawers Deciding she could use them for her artworks Sugiyama shredded the textiles and pasted them onto a drawing in place of paint It turned out to be a piece of recycled art featuring a range of colors--red yellow and gold--and other flamboyant hues of the traditional garments She felt she had a better chance of her works being evaluated without prejudice if she could show them overseas Sugiyama boned up on how to submit her works to an exhibition that was being held in Paris in 2020 The artist kept submitting her works to overseas contests winning honorable mentions and prizes on more than 20 occasions Her paintings were also showcased at Salon d’Automne an annual art exhibition held in Paris since 1903 that featured works of famous Japanese painters in 2022 and again last year saying they were filled with happiness and poetry “Her works have won praise for the ‘vertical harmony’ created through the use of transparent fabrics,” said Hideo Saito head of the Nippon Saibi-kai art association “When you start painting at an advanced age your life experiences become apparent in your works.” one of her patients offered to help manage her artistic endeavors This led to Sugiyama holding solo exhibitions in Morioka and her hometown in Aomori Prefecture in 2023 Sugiyama hosted a workshop at a cafe in Morioka in October that year to encourage others to try her techniques The event received favorable reviews from the participants who said it allowed them to express their inner feelings Her freewheeling style may explain the happy faces of some children with intellectual disabilities when they see her artworks At least one of them won a prize at an exhibition held in 2023 I want to spend that money to create a forum where people with disabilities can present their own works,” the Sugiyama said She has recently begun drawing under the theme of prayer The sources of her imagination include the lone “miracle pine tree” in Rikuzen-Takata which survived the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster and a “gassho dogu” clay figurine with clasped palms that was unearthed from an archaeological site in Hachinohe The artifact dates to the Jomon Pottery Culture Period (c “I want to promote the theme of prayer to the world especially now when our minds are so unsettled because of armed conflicts,” Sugiyama said She is currently working on a
