A roughly six-meter-tall Evangelion Unit 01 statue made its appearance in Hamamatsu
on Sunday as part of a local government tourism campaign through next February in the hope of cashing in on the city's connection to the popular anime film
The purple giant humanoid robot from the film "Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time" will tower over the lobby of Hamamatsu city hall in Shizuoka Prefecture until late January next year
About 170 people lined up in front of the municipal headquarters to see the statue ahead of the public opening at 10:30 a.m
the city firefighters' music band played the popular theme song of the anime
which celebrates the 30th anniversary of the original TV series
follows Evangelion-themed campaigns launched in recent years by Tenryu Hamanako Railroad Co
centered around the city's Tenryu Futamata Station -- a model for Village-3 in the 2021 movie
The station has since been inundated with "anime pilgrims" eager to see a 3.6-meter-tall "Spear of Longinus," a giant extraterrestrial weapon central to the story
Evangelion-themed trains also run at certain times through the station
the two local railway operators began sales of one-day unlimited ride passes featuring images of the main character Shinji Ikari and fellow pilot Kaworu Nagisa
Visitors can complete a stamp rally covering 21 spots along the Tenryu Hamanako and Enshu railway lines
with cutouts of Evangelion characters placed at certain locations
Those who collect 10 stamps will receive an exclusive sticker
I want people to rediscover the appeal of Hamamatsu's tourism and culture," said Mayor Yusuke Nakano
while also expressing interest in partnering with Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture and Ube in Yamaguchi Prefecture
Hakone served as the model for the postapocalyptic fortified city of Tokyo-3
while Ube is the hometown of series director Hideaki Anno
Both locations have also run Evangelion-related tourism campaigns in the past

Hamamatsu City in Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture is home to tasty unagi eel
Among the many food options available in this coastal town
you might be surprised when locals recommend genkotsu hanbaagu
which literally translates to “fist hamburger steak,” head to Sawayaka
While enjoying a walk around Hamamatsu’s city center
my wife and I made our way to the popular restaurant thanks to a recommendation from staff at our hotel
We visited the Sawayaka on the eighth floor of the Entetsu Department Store next to JR Hamamatsu Station
the restaurant’s entrance was already crowded with dozens of families
We took a ticket and waited about an hour to be seated
we perused the shops inside the department store
it was time to head back to the restaurant and enjoy a local dish
I ordered the signature genkotsu hanbaagu for 1,150 yen
while my wife ordered charcoal broiled chicken steak for 790 yen
We also ordered a large decanter of red wine for 880 yen to celebrate a night in Hamamatsu
your steaks are always served hot and crispy because the restaurant doesn’t make a burger until it’s ordered
our sizzling dishes were placed in front of us
250-gram pure beef hamburger steak was cut in two with a generous pour of steak sauce tableside by the server
Diners can choose between demiglace or onion sauce for their hamburger steaks
Onion sauce is the popular choice at Sawayaka
She asked us to toast with her and showed us her unique ring shaped like a small ceramic mug
The young woman made us chuckle and the service she provided was a lovely addition to a delicious meal
My sizzling charcoal-broiled hamburger was very tender
and paired perfectly with the full-bodied red wine
but the well-seasoned hamburger had a kind of nostalgic taste that took me back to my youth back in the 70s
When I sampled a bite of my wife’s chicken steak
I was impressed with its sweet and tangy flavor and crisp texture
Our dinner left us very full and very satisfied
We left quickly as we could see the line of others waiting to enter and have a taste of Sawayaka’s delicious fare
we didn’t forget to ask our staffer to have a photo taken with us
thanking her for her hospitality and toast
While enjoying Hamamatsu’s sights and great eats

ended up at a price tag of approximately €247 million (US$268 million)
Completion of the NKT Photonics acquisition marks the end of a long road for Hamamatsu
with twists and turns worthy of an old Scandinavian saga
The Japanese company announced nearly two years ago
that it intended to purchase the Danish laser maker for consideration of €205 million (roughly ¥29.5 billion
Hamamatsu noted that it already had a business relationship with NKT Photonics centered around the latter’s fiber laser technology
It also expressed interest in a number of specific NKT product lines
single-frequency fiber lasers and ultrafast fiber lasers
for which it saw complements with Hamamatsu’s existing semiconductor diode laser operation and opportunities to extend into new markets
the planned merger ran aground on geopolitical shoals
After receiving approvals for the deal from authorities in Germany
Hamamatsu was served notice on 2 May 2023 by the government of NKT Photonics’ home country
and Financial Affairs declared that it was denying the merger based on the provisions of the Danish Investment Screening Act
That statute allows the government to scotch any overseas deal that it sees as a threat to “national security or public order” in Denmark
Hamamatsu immediately started over with the Danish government
The revised bid was reviewed by multiple government ministries in Denmark
the second try proved more convincing than the first; on 6 May 2024
the Danish government notified Hamamatsu that the merger was approved
The deal’s completion swiftly followed at the end of May
NKT Photonics has become a subsidiary of an existing Hamamatsu business unit
the final deal looks considerably pricier for Hamamatsu than the one originally proposed
with a total deal value more than 20% higher
Hamamatsu blamed the price hike on “an increase in the amount of net debt” needed to finalize the acquisition
Notwithstanding the deal’s long run-up and the ultimate increase in ticket price
Hamamatsu—which booked revenues of ¥221.4 billion (US$1.48 billion) in the fiscal year ended September 2023—seems satisfied with the outcome
In a press release accompanying announcement of the deal’s completion
the company highlighted opportunities to combine NKT Photonics’ laser and fiber products into Hamamatsu’s existing detector and camera products to provide “unique solutions.” The Japanese firm specifically noted opportunities in the emerging quantum-computing market; in metrology systems for semiconductor manufacture; and in hyperspectral imaging
where Hamamatsu believes NKT Photonics’ SuperK supercontinuum laser could prove a strong contender as a broadband light source with good thermal properties
Hamamatsu Photonics Group now possesses a very broad range of technologies within light sources
lasers and detectors,” Hamamatsu wrote in the release
“The combination of NKT Photonics and Hamamatsu Photonics will help us to drive our technology to the next level.”

Hamamatsu Photonics has developed an optical transceiver for spatial light transmission
enabling cable-free optical data communication with rotating objects
The P16548-01AT is suitable for applications in sectors such as transportation
A compact integrated optical transmitter and receiver
it supports full-duplex bidirectional communication up to 1.25Gbps over spatial distances up to 100mm
The P16548-01AT maintains consistent performance
even during communication between a stationary object and those rotating 360°
In addition to short-range board-to-board communication
the optical transceiver is suitable for data communication equipment with rotating mechanisms such as robotic manipulator arms
The transceiver solution also overcomes the limitations of traditional slip rings*
Sample products and evaluation kits can be obtained from Hamamatsu from this week
The P16548-01AT optical transceiver integrates an optical transmitter that converts electrical signals into optical signals and an optical receiver that converts them back into electrical signals
These components are housed in a compact package opposite each other along the same optical axis
This configuration enables full-duplex bidirectional communication up to 1.25 Gbps
whether between circuit boards at short distances from each other or components within a rotating mechanism
This provides a compact and cost-effective solution that ensures stable data communication
slip rings are often used to transmit and receive electrical signals between rotating and stationary components to avoid cable tangling
the rotating brush and fixed metal ring gradually wear out
degrading the signal quality and requiring periodic maintenance
The noise caused by vibration and friction also leads to gradual deterioration in signal quality
Our new optical transceiver overcomes these challenges by utilizing non-contact
The P16548-01AT features a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) for light emission
combined with a VCSEL driver capable of temperature compensation
thus allowing stable communication over a wide operating temperature range
it also includes a high-speed photodiode for light reception and a signal processing IC that maximizes the photodiode performance characteristics
When installed in rotating systems like robotic arms and omni-directional cameras
the P16548-01AT ensures signal quality by eliminating the limitations of traditional slip rings
This optical transceiver also supports lead-free reflow solder mounting where circuit boards are exposed to high temperatures up to 260°C (500°F)
Hamamatsu said it plans to expand its range of optical transceivers in response to market demand

Located on the Pacific coast in central Honshu and within a 3.5-hour drive from most military bases in the Kanto Plain
Hamamatsu is the largest city of Shizuoka Prefecture with over 776,118 people
The castle city is home to a scenic lake and accommodates plenty of natural and historical attractions
Hamamatsu was also where the first Edo Shogun
so there are many buildings and monuments related to this important figure
temples and the Sekishio Checkpoint are popular sights for visitors
My wife and I recently visited Hamamatsu to check out the unique townscape made up of new and old tourist attractions while driving around scenic Lake Hamanako
In the Hamamatsu city center – Though the castle is majestic
it seemed rather small considering it was where the first Tokugawa Shogun resided for 17 years
we learned the castle is a replica because the original castle was destroyed during World War II air raids
is only three quarters the size of the original
the castle tower is a museum with many artifacts
swords and more displaying the extensive history of the castle and area
West of Lake Hamanako- To regulate trade and movements of residents
the Arai Sekisho checkpoint was built in 1858 on the Tokaido Highway
This is the only building of its kind that still exists in Japan today
visitors can get a glimpse of the traditional wooden building
main gate and original signboards for a taste of how locals traveled during the feudal period
East of Lake Hamanako – This side of the lake is where you’ll find Hamamatsu Flower Park
a 300,000-square-meter-wide space with hundreds of beautiful seasonal blooms
We felt like we’d strayed into a scene out of a Ghibli animated film
We hopped on the colorful flower train to enjoy the entire park
home to large mosaic figures of a bear and deer
North of Lake Hamanako – On the north side of the beautiful lake
The temple accommodates dozens of important statues of Buddha and an uguisubari nightingale corridor created to emit creaking noise to warn of eminent attacks
The wooden halls with many Buddhas lead to an impressive traditional Japanese garden
which was designated as a National Site of Scenic Beauty
The garden’s centerpiece is a dragon-shaped pond and unique rock formations
We sat on the veranda facing the garden and enjoyed the extraordinary view while we took a rest
Southeast of Lake Hamanako - Hamamatsu is also home to a topographical wonder— the Nakatajima Sand Dunes
These dunes one of three major ones in Japan and stretch over 600 meters
It is a famous spot to catch loggerhead turtles laying eggs every spring and summer
Although we didn’t meet turtles during our visit
we enjoyed walking on the beautiful dunes reflected in golden colors
Hamamatsu is an attractive city filled with both modern and traditional beauties
Admission: Adults (middle schooler or older) 400 yen
be sure to sample unagi (eel) cultivated in Lake Hamanako
sweet and savory flavors with pleasant crispy textures
Two years after it was first agreed - and a year since it was initially blocked - the deal is set for completion
Although the initial agreement was cleared by authorities in the US, UK, and Germany, nearly a year later the two firms said that the deal appeared off, after it was blocked under the Danish Foreign Investment Act
Shortly after that decision Jens Due Olsen
said in a May 2023 investor conference call:
“We have not received any other reason than that it is for so-called national security reasons and that we will not receive any other explanation
we cannot appeal and we cannot really get any insights into the merits for the prohibition as it is grounded in national security.”
However, Hamamatsu swiftly revived its bid with the relevant authorities
and says it received confirmation of approval from the Danish Business Authority on May 6
NKT and Hamamatsu both said that the transaction should now be completed by the end of June
According to NKT’s latest quarterly report
NKT Photonics recorded pre-tax earnings of €6 million on sales of €88 million in 2023
but a pre-tax loss of €5 million on sales of €16 million in the opening quarter of this year
the divestment marks the final step in the process to fully focus the company on our core business within power cable solutions
where we have announced several investments in the past year to support the green transition of societies.”
Hamamatsu said that the acquisition would help it to expand its laser applications business
pointing out that the supercontinuum white light lasers developed by NKT Photonics had become important in both microscopy and semiconductor device inspection
NKT Photonics added that it should benefit from complementary Hamamatsu components such as detectors and diodes
which would enable both new product development
as well as significantly increased purchasing power
Speaking during an investor conference call held May 8
NKT’s CEO Claes Westerlind said little more about the deal
other than to confirm that the transaction was now in the process of being closed
and should be completed by the end of next month
Hamamatsu said that it was now considering the likely impact of the acquisition on its financial results for the year ending September 2024
The Tokyo-listed company said previously that it had been expecting to post annual sales of just over ¥224 billion (€1.34 billion)
up slightly from the previous year’s total of ¥221 billion
Hamamatsu Photonics has announced the development of the P16548-01AT
an optical transceiver for spatial light transmission
enabling cable-free optical data communication
The P16548-01AT is a compact integrated optical transmitter and receiver that supports full-duplex bidirectional communication up to 1.25 gigabits per second (Gbps) over spatial distances up to 100 mm
even during communication between a stationary object and those rotating 360 degrees
this optical transceiver is ideal for data communication equipment with rotating mechanisms such as robotic manipulator arms
This new solution overcomes the limitations of traditional slip rings
