University of Missouri researchers use a novel electrochemistry approach to build new molecules using micelles from naturally occurring amino acids and coconut oil
By Eric Stann
March 3, 2025Contact: Eric Stann, StannE@missouri.edu
University of Missouri researchers and collaborators have developed an innovative
eco-friendly chemical tool that harnesses the power of engineered “soapy” water and electricity to create reactions in a whole new way
This breakthrough electrochemistry method could reduce the cost of making medicines and support clean energy technology
including efforts to remove per- and polyfluoroalkyls (PFAS)
also known as “forever-chemicals,” from water
Traditional electrochemistry relies on toxic solvents and electrolytes
Associate Professor Sachin Handa and graduate student Karanjeet Kaur
developed environmentally friendly substances called micelles — tiny molecular structures made from natural amino acids and coconut oil
These ball-shaped structures have two sides: one that mixes with water and the other that repels it
Their unique design allowed researchers to make electrochemical reactions more efficient by combining the traditional roles of solvents
electrolytes and reaction boosters into one simple tool
Bonus: The reactions are highly efficient and selective
Handa and Kaur discovered the technique while trying to find a way to use micellar water and electricity as a green source to drive chemical reactions
a process known as micellar electrochemistry
these micelles drive desired reactions forward
but they don’t react with anything and remain stable
making them unique from ionic micelles,” Handa
whose appointment is in Mizzou’s College of Arts and Science
this advancement could help improve the development of medicines — including inhibitors targeting proteins
such as the NS5A of the Hepatitis C virus — and may be used to treat hyperproliferative
inflammatory and immunoregulatory diseases.”
Micelles can be used to develop clean energy technologies by helping split water into hydrogen and oxygen
also plays a key role in clean energy production,” Handa
who was hired through the university’s MizzouForward initiative in 2023
hydrogen — in situ generated from water — can be potentially used as a clean fuel
we can use hydrogen to break down harmful PFAS chemicals
transforming them into useful hydrocarbons while simultaneously releasing oxygen into the air.”
By focusing on sustainability and efficiency
this new chemical tool can reduce the environmental impact of traditional chemical processes and offer sustainable solutions for clean energy production and storage
“Electrocatalytic Micelle-Driven Hydrodefluorination for Accessing Unprotected Monofluorinated Indoles,” was published in Angewandte Chemie

Two University of Missouri scientists created AshPhos
a chemical tool that makes it more efficient to create carbon-nitrogen bonds
Jan. 27, 2025Contact: Eric Stann, 573-882-3346, StannE@missouri.eduPhoto courtesy of Sachin Handa
University of Missouri researchers and collaborators have developed a new chemical tool that could help lower the cost of prescription medications
that makes it easier to create special carbon-nitrogen bonds
These bonds are the backbone of more than half of all medicines on the market today
“What makes AshPhos special from other existing ligands is that it’s made from inexpensive and easy-to-find materials
and it is far better in terms of activity and efficiency,” said Sachin Handa
an associate professor of chemistry at Mizzou’s College of Arts and Science
led by Handa and graduate student Ashish Dusunge
developed AshPhos with the goal of promoting sustainable chemistry
“It’s eco-friendly because it’s made with less waste and uses materials from renewable sources,” Handa said
“It will also make medicine production cheaper
helping more people afford the medications they need.”
who grew up in India and was a first-generation high school student
knows firsthand the importance of providing affordable life-saving medication
“Witnessing people in India struggle to access essential health care during my childhood continues to motivate me to use my expertise as a chemist to create solutions that benefit society as a whole,” he said
researchers plan to explore the use of AshPhos beyond pharmaceutical applications
One idea is to use AshPhos to create nanomaterials that can facilitate hydrogen evolution
Hydrogen is considered a clean energy source
and efficient methods for its production are crucial for transitioning toward renewable energy sources
Another idea is to investigate how AshPhos could help degrade PFAS
or "forever chemicals.” By developing a catalyst using AshPhos and earth-abundant metals
Handa said they could provide a potential solution for breaking down these persistent pollutants
While future applications are still under development
they showcase the versatility of AshPhos and highlight its potential to address critical challenges related to energy and environmental sustainability
“Ligands such as AshPhos facilitate the formation of carbon-nitrogen bonds by stabilizing metal ions and guiding them in reactions
called Buchwald–Hartwig aminations,” said Handa
“This is important for highly challenging bulky molecules that otherwise deactivate the catalyst in the absence of AshPhos.”
This catalyst is essential for the reaction to proceed
The metal catalyst then brings together a “highly challenging” molecule containing carbon and another containing nitrogen
facilitating the formation of a carbon-nitrogen bond between them
the ligand attaches to a metal — palladium — to help it speed up chemical reactions more effectively
“It acts as a 'boss' by directing the metal what to do
ensuring the metal stays active and selective during the process,” Handa said
the ligand might temporarily detach from the metal
AshPhos can prevent this from happening by reattaching to the metal with a little heat
ensuring the catalyst remains active and the reaction continues
“This reattachment ability is key to AshPhos’ effectiveness and makes it superior to many existing ligands,” Handa said
“Our ligand is very strong — it’s like locking a door with a key
ensuring it stays securely closed and won’t open.”
Innovations such as AshPhos are the hallmarks of Mizzou researchers
whose work is powering the new Center for Energy Innovation
“AshPhos ligand: Facilitating challenging aminations in five- and six-membered heteroaryl halides using cyclic secondary and bulky amines,” was published in JACS Au

Funding was provided by grants awarded to Handa from the U.S

A Franklin County jury has awarded a nearly $21 million verdict to a woman left without the use of her arms and legs after a 2021 crash after leaving a bar near Ohio State University's campus where she had been drinking with a fake ID
The $20.8 million verdict was reached Wednesday in Franklin County Common Pleas Court
All eight members of the jury agreed with the verdict
Ellie Handa suffered a significant spinal cord injury in a crash that occurred around 1 a.m
Court records say Handa and two friends had gone to The Big Bar, located at 1714 N. High St. near Ohio State University's campus
because of its reputation for allowing high-school students and underage customers to buy alcohol with fake IDs
Nelson had been at the bar with his friends
Nelson admitted to being allowed into the bar without showing any form of ID and then provided with bottle service
Nelson invited Handa and her friends to go with his group of friends to a party on Frambes Avenue
with the girls riding in the back of Nelson's 2020 Mercedes C-class AMG
Court records say Handa and her friends had commented to Nelson about how recklessly he was driving and how fast he was going
asking him to either slow down or let them out of the car
and a data recorder from his car later revealed he was using 100% throttle and accelerated from 8 mph to 59 mph in the five seconds leading up to the impact of Nelson hitting several other vehicles
Handa was rushed to Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center and underwent emergency surgery
she suffered permanent damage to her spinal cord and much of her upper body was paralyzed
Her lawyers said she has regained some limited use of her hands to operate her wheelchair
Court records say Nelson's blood alcohol level was 0.17%
above the 0.02% legal limit for drivers under the age of 21
Nelson pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular assault and received a sentence of four years in prison
as well as a four-year driver's license suspension
he was ordered to pay more than $394,000 in restitution to Handa
The civil lawsuit Handa filed named Nelson and Big Bar's parent company
Handa's legal team said the bar settled with Handa for a confidential sum while the civil trial was ongoing
A jury found that Nelson was 65% liable for Handa's injuries

Scotland — We may as well pinch a lyric from an old Meatloaf song to describe Lauren Coughlin’s fine victory in the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open at Dundonald Links: Two out of three ain’t bad
Let’s hope we don’t have to pay any royalties
Coughlin joined the LPGA back in 2018 and finally made her breakthrough on the circuit in last month’s Canadian Open
Her silver lining in Scotland means the American has now won twice in her last three starts
With a terrific display of poise and polish in the testing Ayrshire conditions
Coughlin recovered from a shoogly start and closed with a 3-under 69 for a 15-under aggregate and eased to a four-shot triumph over Germany’s Ester Henseleit
“It’s unbelievable,” beamed Coughlin after picking up the first prize of $300,000
If you would have told me (she’d have two wins) at the beginning of last year
It just shows how hard I've worked to get here
“I was definitely thinking about (winning) the night before
I was just trying to stay in the present and tried not to think about winning
With her second win of the season in the bag
Coughlin has done enough to secure her place on the U.S
Solheim Cup team for next month’s transatlantic tussle with Europe in the state of Virginia where she grew up
“I've had big goals for this year with the Solheim Cup and all that,” added Coughlin
I knew I needed to improve and that’s what I've been trying to do all along.”
who held a slender one-shot lead over Megan Khang after 54 holes
stumbled out of the blocks with two bogeys on her first four holes
It certainly wasn’t the start she was looking for
A brace of birdies at the fifth and seventh helped to steady the ship and got her ahead of Khang again after her compatriot had nipped in front
“I started out a little slow,” said Coughlin of that initial splutter
“But I managed to hang in there and was able to settle nicely.”
Khang’s challenge faded as she failed to make another birdie after the fifth while Japan’s Ayaka Furue
the Women’s Scottish Open champion in 2022
who took the silver medal in the Olympic golf event in Paris the previous weekend
became Coughlin’s biggest threat on the back nine but the American staved off her advances
Coughlin picked up three birdies coming home and single-putted her final seven holes
A crucial up-and-down on the 12th underlined the quality of her scrambling when things were tight at the top
The way she preserved her position of authority was mightily impressive
Coughlin trundled in a putt of 20-feet for a great par at the 16th
mounted another good salvage operation from just off the green at the 17th and holed a 25-footer for birdie at the last to finish with a flourish
Andrews for this week’s AIG Women’s Open with a spring in her step
She could probably float over to the east coast on an updraft of her own confidence
The Dundonald tune-up will stand her in good stead for the ultimate links test in the Auld Grey Toun
you come over here to get some reps on links and in the wind (ahead of The Open),” she said
“It’s so different to being back in the States
Coughlin certainly enjoyed her time in Ayrshire
“Troon is a fun place,” she added of her home for the week
It’s awesome.” She’ll be getting the freedom of the town at this rate
a two-time winner on the Ladies European Tour
signed off with a 70 for 11 under to finish runner-up again after her Olympic silver
but Lauren played amazing golf,” said Henseleit
who picked up a trio of birdies on her inward half
Her up-and-down on the 16th was pretty special.”
shared third with Furue on 9 under while Charley Hull fell away with a 73 and was fifth on 8 under
Joaquin Niemann kisses the trophy after his win at the 2023 Australian Open
For the second leg of the DP World Tour's mini Australian swing and as part of the final stretch on the WPGA Tour of Australasia
some of the Golf Monthly team has selected a couple of players each to look out for
With the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour on a well-deserved break until the new year
many fans' attention will now be focused on one of the world's best mixed events - the ISPS Handa Australian Open
the premier event Down Under has featured both men and women on the same course
with a number of popular Australian names - including Cameron Smith
and Min Woo Lee - desperate to win their respective national open for the first time
Joaquin Niemann heads the list of big-hitting non-Aussies in the field alongside Victor Perez and Jordan Smith
Jiyai Shin and two-time winner and defending champion
Ashleigh Buhai represent good chances for a non-Australian champion in the women's event
With many of the players having now acclimatized to Australian conditions
fans can expect a really high quality of play at both Kingston Heath Golf Club and and Victoria Golf Club in Melbourne
Keep reading to find out who some of the Golf Monthly team have picked out as likely contenders this week..
The Australian Open will take place at two courses in Melbourne once again
following a similar framework to when Adrian Meronk won in 2022
as Kingston Heath Golf Club and Victoria Golf Club share hosting duties
while Victoria took three rounds a couple of years back
Kingston Heath is the star of the show this week - perhaps rightly so as the country's No.2 course behind its near neighbor
The winning score has been in the mid-teens at various courses over the past few years
but the triumphant total could well be a little closer to par this time if Kingston Heath continues to bare its teeth like it did in 2022 - playing a couple of strokes over par during its lone round
The finishing layout is a par-72 which is measured at 7,259 yards
both could play slightly longer given the recent heavy rain in Australia
Men's event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19 pandemic

Cameron Smith)2015Matt Jones-8 (one stroke)2014Jordan Spieth-13 (six strokes)2013Rory McIlroy-18 (one stroke)Women's event was cancelled in 2021 due to Covid-19 pandemic
The women's odds to win outright are via Bet365
Smith narrowly missed out on his PGA Tour card via the DP World Tour but is on a very solid run of form right now with ten consecutive cuts made and finishes of 4th and 7th in that spell
The Englishman has also had two runner-up finishes this year
He is fully acclimatized after teeing it up in the Australian PGA last week
somewhat of a veteran now with two DP World Tour wins to his name
The former Stanford Cardinal has just earned his PGA Tour card after being named Korn Ferry Tour Rookie of the Year
who was born in Indonesia and grew up in Australia before moving to the US at the age of 11
is a seriously promising player who won the US Kids World Championship twice
was a Pac-12 champion at College and then recorded a win and a runner-up in his debut season as a pro on the KFT
I’m hoping he’ll relish the return to his homeland and put in a strong display Down Under
There are a few star names playing this week
including 2022 and 2023 champion Ashleigh Buhai
I would be backing Minjee Lee to grab her first win of the season
She has somewhat slipped down the rankings this year from fourth to 17th but has had some good results dotted in and she is a class above the majority of this field
Korea’s Jeongmin Cho is the WPGA Tour Australia Order of Merit leader and is incredibly high priced
She isn’t on the best run but is clearly one of the top players on the circuit
so the Korean could well lodge a top-10 result this week
FAVORITE: Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen (+2000)
Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen had a storming end to the 2024 season
finishing second at the Challenge Tour Grand Final after three season wins and a run of four top-20 finishes in five starts on the DP World Tour
The young Dane carried his form forwards into the first event of the 2025 season in Australia last week
and I believe he has what it takes to contend again here
He was third for driving accuracy at the Australian PGA Championship
and was also 12th for Strokes Gained (SG): Tee To Green and 16th for SG: Putting
Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen is one of many young Danish golfers with bags of potential
and I don't think you'll continue seeing prices like this if his form continues
Another exciting Challenge Tour graduate comes in the form of Angel Ayora
who had a solid final round in Australia last week to catapult himself into the top-10
which is a testament to how talented the Spaniard is
13th for SG: Around The Green and 17th for SG: Tee to Green - so at this sort of price and in this sort of form
Promising 21-year-old Caitlin Pierce looks to be an interesting price following her strong end to the 2024 season
finishing second in the Australian Women's Order Of Merit
Pierce actually played the least counting events of anyone in the top-13 of the rankings
which highlights the quality and consistency of her golf recently
Pierce had a 100% record for top-three finishes
and didn't once finish outside the top-11 in any of her eight qualifying events
Up against some strong favourites in this field
but at this price she represents an exciting each-way bet
Min Woo Lee and Marc Leishman lead the Aussie charge but
who will hope to back-up his sixth place finish at last week's Australian PGA Championship with another strong showing this week
he opened that tournament with an eight-under-par 63 and
had it not been for a 74 second round and 75 final round
he may well have challenged at the top of the leaderboard
he seems to be in good form and his game suits the layout of Kingston Heath so
Following three top-10 results in his last four starts
Voke comes into the tournament in fine form and I think he offers great value
especially after a top eight at last week's Australian PGA Championship where he carded a final round 65
the Australian seems to have turned a corner regarding form and
he ranks very well in driving accuracy and greens in regulation
he could well challenge for the top 10 again
I can only see a winner coming from one of the favorites and
I think Hannah Green is the player I would opt for
Not only does she have three victories in 2024
but she is returning to her native Australia
where the number of wins speaks for itself..
Leishman has enjoyed a sneaky good season in the LIV Golf League
picking up four top-10s and ably assisting his team to a team victory in the season-long race
he has picked up at least 1.73 shots on the field - going over 2.63 in three of them
A T3rd result at the Australian PGA Championship last week shows he is in great form
and I'm willing to overlook his missed cut at this event over these two courses back in 2022 as he was a different player with a different game at that point
Runner-up in the Challenge Tour standings this season
Englishman Parry has been in excellent form on all manner of courses in a variety of different countries
he is incredibly accurate and generally putts well enough to contend
one of which was at the Australian PGA Championship last week
I'm hopeful Parry can make it a hat-trick in Melbourne..
Outside of the big two this week (Minjee Lee and Hannah Green)
Grace Kim might well be a decent shout to upset the applecart and steal a victory in her homeland
She hasn't missed a cut in any of her past 11 starts and has six top-25s in that time
Kim could truly announce herself with a win at two tricky golf courses
He graduated from the University of Brighton with a degree in Sport Journalism in 2017 and spent almost five years as the sole sports reporter at his local newspaper
Jonny has interviewed several stars of the game
Jonny enjoys learning as much about the game as he can and recently reached his Handicap goal of 18 for the first time
He attended both the 150th and 151st Open Championships and dreams of attending The Masters one day
had been wolfing into cupcakes at Dundonald Links during the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open
has been reacquainting herself with an old favorite of hers
“I went to the cafe in Troon and ordered the sausage roll but it was just burned,” said the two-time major champion
Whatever it was that was plonked in front of her
A four-under 68 in round three hoisted her into the top 10
it was Lauren Coughlin who had given everybody food for thought
A surging six-under 66 from the in-form American propelled her to the top of the leaderboard on a 12-under aggregate and gave her a slender one-shot advantage over Megan Khang heading into the closing round
It’s been a profitable few weeks for Coughlin
The 31-year-old’s flurry of form started with a fourth-place finish in the Evian Championship
the penultimate women’s major of the season
and was followed by a maiden win on the LPGA Tour at the Canadian Open
A solid tie for ninth in the Portland Classic prior to pitching up in Ayrshire kept Coughlin ticking along
she’s on the cusp of a significant success in the game’s cradle
windy day – a mere breeze in Scottish golfing parlance – Coughlin harnessed the conditions well with a bogey-free card which equaled the best score of round three
A bag of six birdies aided the Coughlin cause as she continued to feed of the feel-good factor that her fine form has generated
“I’ve just been feeling really good about my game,” she said
“I’ve started getting confidence and being relaxed is all I need to do.” Perhaps we should all try this laid-back approach to this game
was ambling along with 11 straight pars but needed to up the ante as Coughlin barged her way to the front
and she found another gear on the run-in with birdies at the 12th
“I just have to give myself the opportunities to hole birdies when I have to and get some up-and-downs when need be,” she said
“That’s going to be what makes or breaks this tournament.”
Germany’s Esther Henseleit won silver in the Olympic golf event in Paris last weekend but the 25-year-old is going for gold here at Dundonald
The two-time Ladies European Tour winner vaulted into contention on nine-under after a 66 which included three birdies in a row from the eighth and an eagle on the 14th
A bogey on the 16th took some of the shine off the round but it was still a fine day at the office
Henseleit came a cropper in a Dundonald bunker and just about required a mini excavator to dig herself out on her way to an eight
“Everyone knows Scottish bunkers are no joke,” she said with a wry chuckle
I’m just trying to enjoy the challenge of links golf.”
England’s Charley Hull stayed in the hunt with a three-under back-nine in a 69 which left her sitting alongside Henseleit on nine-under
Her title tilt may just be bolstered by the presence of her other half to cheer her on
who was sharing the lead at the start of round three
made an early thrust with back-to-back birdies at the second and third but the Australian would leak three shots coming home and eventually signed for a frustrating 72 which left her four back on eight-under
“It was up and down,” said the 2018 runner-up
“I started well but just didn’t carry on the momentum
Sometimes you just have to take it on the chin
I’m just going to try to get some good vibes with the putter.”
Cake-loving Ko sits on seven-under alongside the aforementioned Ko

The Chilean enjoyed his time in Australia at the start of last season
backing up a fifth-place finish at the Australian PGA Championship by edging out Rikuya Hoshino in a play-off to become the first South American winner of this event last year
He also arrives in Melbourne off the back of finishing tied seventh in the DP World Tour Championship at the end of last season earlier this month
In his nine starts on the DP World Tour schedule last season
he did not miss a cut and secured a top ten for his nation in the Olympic Games
the Australian was still awaiting his first victory in the paid ranks
But with two titles - both on home soil - in quick succession confidence will be sky high for the 22-year-old
One of two players to receive the Cameron Smith Scholarship in 2019 - the year he became the Australian Boys' Amateur champion - his potential is coming to the surface
He held off acclaimed countrymen Smith and Marc Leishman to win the BMW Australian PGA Championship over the weekend for his maiden DP World Tour title
shortly after his first success as a professional in the Bowra & O'Dea Nexus Advisernet WA Open on the PGA Tour of Australasia last month
The Challenge Tour graduate made a brilliant start to his rookie season on the DP World Tour
finishing tied sixth at the BMW Australian PGA Championship
That followed back-to-back runner-up finishes on the Challenge Tour as he finished fourth on the Road to Mallorca Rankings
Despite his fleeting experience on the DP World Tour since his debut as an amateur at the Estrella Damm N.A
the Spaniard does have form in this event having finished tied 21st last year
he is a raw but the talent is certainly there and he'll hope to prove a surprise package

Our pre-event pick as Favourite Min Woo Lee finished tied 15th
with Form Horse Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen eighth
while our Wild Card selection Joel Moscatel missed the cut on his first start since graduating from the Challenge Tour
They needed to play catch-up at Dundonald Links on Thursday
the organizers just about required a couple of snookers to get the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open back on track after Thursday’s meteorological muddle
pinched the first-round lead on Thursday in the near darkness
she was home and dry at a more civilized hour
which included a finishing flourish of two birdies at 17 and 18
cemented her position at the top of the order
She was joined at the summit later in the evening by Khang
who picked up a birdie on her closing hole en route to a four-under 68
whose brother Min Woo won the men’s Scottish Open back in 2021
Lee began her Dundonald campaign with a potentially ruinous 80 but then reeled off three rounds in the 60s during the kind of mighty salvage operation that raised the Mary Rose
The two-time major winner is now 22-under for her last five rounds in this neck of the woods
who was pipped to the Scottish title by a shot when it was played at Gullane in 2018
I can't control what other people are doing
Khang packed six birdies into her round as the American Solheim Cup player fortified her position on the leaderboard
“It's not often I'm hitting a 7-iron to a 116-yard pin,” she said of this very different style of golf
40 yards right of the pin and to be able to pull off a shot
I can't believe that actually worked sometimes
Sometimes it can work out and sometimes it doesn't
I'm trying to tell myself that if I can at least do everything I can to hit the shot I picture
England’s Charley Hull is right in the thick of it heading into the weekend after following up her opening 70 with a 68 to lurk just two shots off the pace on six-under
Hull enjoyed a lively little burst around the turn and birdied the 17th and eagled the 18th after her approach trundled to within 15 feet of the pin
Two more birdies at the first and third bolstered her assault
Hull warmed up for this week’s domestic showpiece down the road at Turnberry
She even declared that The Open and some of the big women’s events should head back to the storied Ailsa links
with Donald Trump’s name on the entry gates
there’s more chance of The Open being staged on the outer rings of Saturn
Hull’s Turnberry tune-up has certainly stood her in good stead
With the AIG Women’s Open coming up next week at the Old Course
Hull is getting into the links swing again
“I love links golf but I find it hard to play in,” said Hull
who is looking to capture a third LPGA Tour title
“I feel like my game is more built for America
my coach and I have been working on doing more three-quarter swings so I can do a low-ball flight for the (Women’s) Open
harnessed the conditions to fine effect as she joined Hull and American
“I can't remember the last time I've had to hit a 3-wood on a par 3,” smiled Ko of the club she had to clatter into the wind on the fourth
“I hit a 5-iron yesterday and today I hit a 3-wood and it landed just pin-high
The number goes out of the window in the wind.”
It wasn’t a good day for the home hopefuls
Only three were in the field and they’re all out now
who was desperate for a good week to boost her Solheim Cup ambitions
also departed on 13-over after a turbulent 83 while Glasgow’s Kylie Henry joined the casualty list on 11-over although she at least shaved 11 shots off her first-round 83 with a spirited 72 in round two
