while you are here “Gladiator II,” the sequel to 2001’s best picture winner who lives a quiet life in Numidia with his wife Arisha killing Arisha and making Hanno a slave gladiator He soon finds himself as the political tool of his owner Macrinus (Denzel Washington) in his attempt to court the tyrannical twin emperors — Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) — and catches the eye of General Acacius (Pedro Pascal) and Acacius’ wife Lucilla (Connie Nielson) The film opens with a shot of Hanno hands rummaging through a basket of harvested wheat, a direct reference to Gladiator’s famous shot of Maximus (Russell Crowe) finding peace in the afterlife It tells us that what was sown in the first film has now been reaped The grain that was springing with hope and contentment alongside Maximus is now hard the film struggles to decide whether it is a continuation or rebuttal of its predecessor Denzel’s character twice quotes real-life emperor Marcus Aurelius’ — who looms large over both films as Lucilla’s father and the paragon of what the films consider virtue — famous work “Meditations,”  saying “The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury.” This is true of both Denzel’s character and the film overall It asks us to examine the ideas provided by what came before it — is a great man the answer to our problems Are the ideals we have fought for in our best interest These ideas and the dialogue surrounding them are muddied we find out that Hanno is actually the son of Maximus and Lucilla Hanno’s strength to carry on has come from the death of his wife and his people’s suffering it is his lineage and the idea of his martyred father that drives him forward But the latter reasoning sadly rings hollow.  The film’s first half was built upon Hanno’s rage over his mother’s abandonment of him and the Roman Empire’s false ideals After a weakly depicted realization of his love for his mother what he was standing against becomes what he is fighting for This switch was wholly unearned and retracts any claims the sequel had to new ideological ground.  Blood and Romanitas are the ideological center of the film’s conflict but there is never enough ideological coherence to resolve it a former slave attempting to claim the Roman throne He abides by dual beliefs that the strongest must rule and that fear is the maintainer of peace Hanno consistently believes… well… in practically nothing The constant shifting of his moral code makes the revolution he inspires It is unclear whether this is a revolution that returns the power to the people or reinstates an older dynasty on a hereditary throne But even if the form of government was clear Hanno and his movement simultaneously arise from the struggles of  the downtrodden and depend on connections to the aristocracy The film tries to make Hanno a response to what came before but he can be nothing more than a continuation of what was already these faults speak nothing of what is important in a successful blockbuster film The opening invasion of Numidia is enthralling and intense and the Colosseum’s water-filled set piece is inventive and the film's most successful fight scene catapults and mortars have never been so visceral The fighting is grand without turning into an Marvel-esque CGI fest and personal enough to make every blow matter The performances vary from genuine to campy Mescal is tasked with more than he is capable of as the heir to Crowe’s legendary performance and the counterweight to Denzel Denzel is larger than life and the true centerpoint of the film Mescal does not buckle under the weight of the franchise but is better tasked to be vassal to the screen that Denzel owns Denzel’s performance feels more akin to his star-turning performances in “Training Day” or “Glory” than an actual representation of a Roman elite He functions as an idea in contrast to Mescal’s sincere actuality The former offers loftiness while the latter gives weight Bloated and talkative for a film where two separate characters emphasize their lack of skill at oration it is also enjoyable and argumentative — most often with itself The period and performances are built for the big screen It does not fall for the trappings of frustrating legacy sequels like the recent “Star Wars” trilogy or “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” although it itches for the hit of a callback It is not wholly its own or comfortable in new territory but it does enough to validate its existence and offers an enjoyable escape Kadin Purath is a Trinity junior and a culture editor well-recorded later lives of the everyday merchants who wrote down the stories of their travels in the Middle Ages What survives of their voyages are hints and vague allusions in the works of later authors second- and third-hand stories in which the shreds of truth mingle with the mythological and the fantastic a Carthaginian captain named Hanno is said to have sailed from Libya with a fleet of sixty ships through the Strait of Gibraltar and south along the Atlantic coast of Africa until he reached a land of volcanoes and gorillas But all that remains of his account is a partial Greek translation of the original Punic text Scholars have been left to guess just how far he traveled Roman writers later described another fifth-century Carthaginian named Himilco encountering sea monsters and what seems to be the seaweed of the Sargasso Sea far out in the Atlantic Himilco’s voyage remains impossible to confirm but the knowledge of the mid-Atlantic that his story reveals is genuine an explorer from the Greek colony at Marseilles named Phytheas circumnavigated the British Isles and penetrated deep into the Baltic Sea He was the first writer to mention Scotland and to describe the firsthand experience of the land of the midnight sun Phytheas’s original text only survives in excerpts and paraphrases in the works of later authors The same is true of the Chinese diplomat Zhang Qian who was dispatched to Central Asia by Han dynasty emperor Wu in 138 BCE His journey helped to inaugurate a new era of interconnection in Asia that saw the first flourishing of the famous overland trade network that linked China to India The truth of his travels is not in question His journey only survives in the history compiled by his contemporary One of the first explorers to leave a firsthand account of his journey that survives was the Buddhist monk Faxian Faxian and nine other monks left their monastery in Chang’an (modern Xi’an) in central China and set out on a pilgrimage to India in search of Buddhist texts not available in China It was a grueling journey on foot across the Gobi Desert where the only sight other than the “river of sand” was the “dry bones of the dead,” and over the high passes of the Himalayas “among the hills and cold,” where nothing grew and dragons “spit forth poisonous winds” so bitter that Faxian could not speak The monks crossed the wide Indus into India Faxian eventually traveled all the way down the Ganges to the religious center of Varanasi and on to Pataliputra India was the true “Middle Kingdom,” the center of the universe which proudly claimed the title for itself was for him a “border-land.” (Such talk would outrage many readers back home in China first transmitted orally to his fellow monks then written down in the annals of Buddhist heroes and read across China decentering his homeland and situating it within a wider world he encouraged curiosity and inquiry and inspired generations of explorers to follow his lead how stories of exploration told from the perspective of the explorer have the power to change the world early accounts of explorers often veer into legend another Buddhist monk named Xuanzang left China to see the land of the Buddha where he became obsessed with tracking down and collecting original Buddhist scriptures from India he learned about the journey of Faxian and became determined to follow his example Xuanzang traveled across the great western deserts and climbed the towering passes of the Himalayas before staggering out At the celebrated Nalanda monastery in Bihar he brought with him twenty packhorses worth of scriptures and a treasure trove of tales about the giant stone Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan (later destroyed by the Taliban) and a fantastical race of dragon men in the high Himalayas transformed Xuanzang from an obscure young monk into a revered figure he established a translation center at Chang’an that drew students and scholars from across Asia binding the world closer together and spreading his own name in the process recorded Xuanzang’s account of his voyage for posterity the Great Tang Records on the Western Regions Xuanzang’s journey continued even after his death in 664 His image can be found in temples from Taiwan to Dunhuang his journey became the inspiration for plays increasingly fictionalized as the years passed By the time of the Ming dynasty in the sixteenth century life and legend had merged so completely that the real Xuanzang had become the fictional Tang Sanzang hero of the beloved 1592 novel Journey to the West that story of a wandering monk and his four disciples But even after Xuanzang’s story became subsumed in the legend of Tang Sanzang exchange—lived on to influence generations of Chinese and Korean readers to look upon the world as a place worthy of exploration Exploration and mythmaking were often so intertwined that genuine accounts of discovery were sometimes dismissed as mere fables This was doubly true in the case of two of the first Europeans to set foot in the Americas Gudrid Far-Traveler was the descendant of the Scandinavian explorers who had crossed the North Sea in the 700s–800s to settle the islands of the far north Atlantic: the Faroe Islands she accompanied her father on the expedition led by the notorious Erik the Red that established the first Norse settlement in Greenland and winds and currents favorable for sailing farther west and south it was not long before sailors began returning to the Greenland settlement with tales of a verdant land in the direction of the setting sun It was Erik’s elder son Leif Erikson who led the first Norse expedition to make landfall in the Americas around the year 1000 Gudrid’s husband Thorstein was Leif’s younger brother so Gudrid had planned to join Leif’s second expedition to the place he called Vinland (after the wild grapes he noticed growing onshore) With her sights still fixed beyond the horizon Gudrid chose a prominent merchant named Thorfinn Karlsefni as her second husband and wasted no time urging him to outfit his own expedition they would help create the first permanent European settlement in North America in what is now Newfoundland who became the first child of European descent to be born in the Americas Gudrid was not the only Viking woman with interests in exploration She was joined in the Newfoundland settlement by Leif Erikson’s tough-minded sister who arrived in America as a full partner in the settlement venture and the undisputed leader of a party of more than thirty men When conflict broke out between the Norse interlopers and the skræling the Indigenous people of the region (likely either the ancestors of the Beothuk or the Thule Furious at the timidity of the settlement’s men she beat her bare breast with her sword until the attackers fled Her bold action in the face of danger would make her a legendary model of female strength though the two surviving accounts of her life in America differ in their descriptions of her Freydís is a warning of the dangers of headstrong women; in Saga of Erik the Red she is the personification of maternal bravery and sacrifice the story of her voyage held lasting power Gudrid and Freydís both abandoned the Vinland settlement when Indigenous resistance to their presence became too fierce where a Norse settlement would limp on for another four centuries as the farthest outpost of European settlement Gudrid settled back in Iceland with her son Snorri Both women became legendary figures in their native land their history eventually elided with the myths that surrounded them their actual existence was widely dismissed the very fact that two women helped to lead the first European expeditions to the Americas was often interpreted by scholars as evidence that all the stories contained in the sagas were fiction when a Norwegian archaeologist named Anne Stine Ingstad discovered the remains of a Norse settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows that the lives and deeds of Gudrid Far-Traveler and Freydís Eiríksdóttir were supported by historical evidence The age of the settlement Ingstad—carbon-dated to around the year 1000—and its location closely matched the descriptions of Gudrid and Karlsefni’s outpost in Vinland Among the more than eight hundred objects uncovered at the site archaeologists found a bone knitting needle As spinning and weaving were almost always performed by women in the Viking world it is all but certain that the settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows was occupied by men and women just as the sagas of Gudrid and Freydís recorded Writing of his compatriots who sailed west across the Atlantic to Iceland the first explorers from the Old World to set foot upon the New a Norwegian chronicler was at a loss to explain why anyone would take such risks without a clear idea of the rewards “What people go to Greenland and why they fare thither through such great perils?” he asked The only explanation was “man’s threefold nature,” he concluded: “One motive is fame and a third is a lust for gain.” As history unfolded and lust for gain continued to drive people to set out into the unknown It also ensured that the stories they told about far-off lands were widely read—though their tales were often greeted with suspicion most have agreed that Marco Polo’s Travels the most famous account of exploration in Western history as doubted and dismissed as the account of Gudrid’s travels in the Vinland sagas even as Rustichello penned Marco Polo’s tale there were those who knew for certain that many of the things he said were true Those individuals had traveled the same roads that took Polo across the world to Xanadu Rabban Bar Sauma had been at sea for more than a week when the smell of brimstone wafted in on the wind and the sky itself seemed to catch fire This wine-dark “sea of Italy” was “a terrible sea,” the monk reflected It was like no body of water he had ever seen He could well believe the sailors’ stories that “very many thousands of people” had “perished” beneath its waves the first land they had seen in days was a mountain belching hellish sulfur smoke “all day long.” At night pillars of fire could be seen bursting forth from its peak “Some people say there is a great serpent there,” Sauma wrote Perhaps it had been a mistake to have come so far to explore the land of the Franks A fire of another kind set Sauma on his journey He had been born in Khanbaliq (Beijing) in 1220 to a wealthy Uyghur couple His parents were members of the Christian Nestorian Church of the East that had reached China in the seventh century The Mongol Yuan dynasty of Sauma’s day was tolerant of many faiths—Buddhist Shamanic—as Marco Polo would later attest Sauma’s parents had high hopes for their son and…burned up the brambles of sin,” Sauma remembered Sauma had become a religious teacher of some repute and a prominent figure in the Nestorian Christian community of the Yuan dynasty the world he found in the pages of the Bible drew his thoughts to the lands of Christ and his disciples in the West He longed to walk in the footsteps of the savior and see the shrines of the saints for himself His precocious student Markos also had visions of Christendom and together they began to plan a pilgrimage “It would be exceedingly helpful to us if we were to leave this region and set out for the West,” Sauma told Markos “for we could then [visit] the tombs of the holy martyrs and Catholic Fathers… And if Christ… prolonged our lives we could go to Jerusalem.” Their friends tried to warn them off telling the pair that they did not “know how very far off that region is” or “how difficult it will be for you to travel over the roads…ye will never reach there.” “The kingdom of heaven is within you,” they argued; there was no need to seek it in the West But Sauma and Markos would not be diverted They “burned to set out on the road,” Sauma recorded—as monks they had already “renounced the world” and were not afraid to die: “We consider ourselves already dead.” Chinese ambassadors had reached the borders of Europe before the birth of Christ Buddhist monks had regularly crossed the Himalayas to India to visit the birthplace of the Buddha had even written down the story of their travels Markos and Sauma set off from Yinchuan across the baking Gobi Desert skirting the treacherous Taklamakan Desert to Khotan where they arrived “in a state of exhaustion whereto fear was added.” From Khorasan they headed through Mosul to Ani in the Christian kingdom of Georgia The road west was too dangerous to continue “We have not come from that country [China] in order to turn back and go again thither,” Sauma reasoned “and we do not intend to endure a repetition of the hardship which we have already suffered For the man who is tripped up twice by the [same] stone is a fool.” They decided to head south for Baghdad the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanate of Persia they were summoned to the court of the Ilkhan Arghun who asked why they had come and “what their native country was.” They explained that they had come all the way from China in hopes of visiting the Christian Holy Land With their hopes of reaching Jerusalem dashed they asked to be allowed to settle in Baghdad among the thriving Christian community protected by the Mongols they remained in Baghdad for several years where Sauma reprised his role as a teacher and Markos rose to become patriarch of the Church of the East Perhaps they even noticed a trio of Venetian merchants passing through on the same road they had taken west From Explorers: A New History by Matthew Lockwood Created by Grove Atlantic and Electric Literature Masthead About Sign Up For Our alive and thriving Stripped-down albums get a bad rap because they’ve rightfully earned that reputation Behind every band who wants to “get back to basics” is an empty bar cart and a list of ideas that is only slightly fuller and just about everything in their career thus far has been just that for the transcontinental duo Mantar refusing to release the same album twice and often making things harder on themselves in the process That all came to a head with previous career highlight Pain is Forever and This is the End which was so agonizing that it did indeed threaten the band’s sanity and longevity Everything about Mantar’s last record was shrouded in the maxim “let’s make it bigger.” Featuring a massive production and a songwriting that is another thesaurus-level word for large Post Apocalyptic Depression out February 14 via Metal Blade Records which while certainly not an acoustic-led soundscape is about as stripped down and back to basics as far as sludgy death-punk bands can possibly be while Frankenstein-ing bits and pieces from various metal subgenres Mantar have fully recommitted to their punk roots That pays off in a multitude of manners but most significantly there’s zero fucking patience in these songs and I hear no apologies in Post Apocalyptic Depression as vocalist/guitarist Hanno Klänhardt shares “This album was all about having fun again It was some sort of spiritual healing for us True story: the initial plan was to record a Pink Floyd cover that became the new album and has nothing to do with that original idea [laughs] The shift in tone is a natural thing happening whenever you start all over again.” “To be frank after the total shit show of recording process of the previous record,” he adds “we pretty much had no other choice than doing only what felt right and most of all fun for us The band almost broke up over the [last] album This time the only choice was to just have some good old-fashioned fun There was literally no way either of us would have had the energy to go through this big process again But it does not remind me of good times one bit We were so willing to ‘surprise’ ourselves I was not even there when Ryan Williams mixed the album “we didn’t even bring our gear into the studio and just said we would record the album with whatever gear we would find there Most of it is recorded live with just a few overdubs here and there I recorded the vocals with a 45-dollar mic in my bedroom So pretty much everything was ‘easy,’ as we basically just forced ourselves to give up all control and forget everything we thought we knew Good old fashioned apocalyptic visions and not one solution or ideas to solve any problems of the world I know my job is to gush over every record but the sense of fun and freedom–Mantar pillars sure but certainly amplified here – is central to the point of this unapologetic ode to frenetic and efficient punk ditties Aside from doing “everything” differently from the last go round “[I wanted to] reconnect with my punk roots As much as I like metal (death and black metal mostly) nothing ever comes close to the sensation I feel when something feels truly ‘punk.’ I like the aggression I saw a lot of young hardcore and punk bands lately in the small town where I live (Gainesville just seeing the kids going crazy in a short brutal burst of aggression.” That sense of liberation extends to the lyrics going away from trying to find coherent paths forward Klänhardt spends his time during the record acknowledging that things are not the way any sane person wants but leaning into the chaos “[I wanted to write about] literally nothing When we started Mantar my voice and the lyrics were more like an additional instrument my lyrics always been brutal and rather dark but I never had a mission or a certain agenda to spread I mean don’t get me wrong I absolutely [a ton of] effort into the lyrics but I don’t do so in order to convince people of my way of thinking or to teach or to ‘offer a solution’ of any sort you are in for good old-fashioned darkness but human stupidity and cruelty is fascinating to me.” Post Apocalyptic Depression is out today, and you can order it from Sánchez, has called on private energy operators to help his government establish the cause of Monday’s unprecedented power cut across the Iberian peninsula and said changes and improvements must be made to guarantee “the supply and future competitiveness” of the country’s electrical system Spain and Portugal suffered a massive power loss that began shortly after 12.30pm on Monday and lasted into the night At least five people are thought to have died in Spain as a result of the blackout which left passengers trapped on paralysed trains and in the static lifts of apartment blocks and offices Although energy operators in both countries have rejected the possibility of a cyber-attack, Sánchez’s socialist government is refusing to rule out “any hypothesis” and Spain’s highest criminal court has opened an investigation to determine whether “an act of computer sabotage” could have been perpetrated “against critical Spanish infrastructure” saying his government would ask the EU’s Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators to perform “an independent audit of the electrical systems of the affected countries to fully determine the causes of this situation” Sánchez summoned private energy operators – including the president of the national grid operator Acciona Energía and Naturgy – to an urgent meeting to discuss the blackout Sánchez announced the creation of a commission to investigate the incident and to look at the role of private energy companies He also said he had found out about Red Eléctrica’s conclusion that the blackout was not down to a cyber-attack only through media reports In a post on X after the meeting joint action with the private energy providers “I have thanked them for their work to rapidly restore the supply and I have also asked them to work with the government and independent organisations to identify the causes of the incident,” he said “We need to undertake the necessary improvements when it comes to guaranteeing the supply and the future competitiveness of our system.” The investigations are focusing on what happened at 12.33pm on Monday 15 gigawatts of the energy that was being produced – equivalent to 60% of all the energy that was being used – suddenly disappeared said the company knew what had caused the blackout but was still poring over a huge amount of data “We know the cause and we have it more or less tracked down but the thing is there are millions of pieces of information because signals are sent every millisecond,” she told Cadena Ser radio Corredor said she would not be resigning over the incident adding: “To do so would be recognise that the correct actions weren’t taken Pedro Sánchez held an urgent meeting with private energy operators on Tuesday night to discuss the blackout Photograph: Anadolu/Getty ImagesSánchez’s political opponents claim he has pushed ahead with plans to prioritise renewable energy over nuclear energy without thinking of the consequences and is trying to blame private energy companies for the blackout The conservative People’s party (PP) accused the prime minister of waging “an information blackout” over the incident and called for him to appear before congress to give a full account of what he knows about the incident Free daily newsletterOur morning email breaks down the key stories of the day telling you what’s happening and why it matters “The government has assumed no responsibility engaged in no self-criticism and it hasn’t even apologised to the people,” PP sources said on Wednesday morning The party also pointed out that Corredor had served as a minister in the last socialist government The PP’s criticisms come six months after the party was criticised for its slow and inadequate response to the devastating floods that killed 227 people in Valencia Despite receiving several meteorological warnings about the heavy rains that triggered the floods the regional government did not send an emergency alert to people’s mobiles until after 8pm on the day of the floods also spent three hours having lunch with a journalist when the floods hit and people were drowning in their homes and cars The far-right Vox party has also trained its fire on Sánchez, accusing him of a costly ideological aversion to nuclear power, which, it said, had left Spain in the dark “Those who link this incident to the lack of nuclear power are frankly lying or demonstrating their ignorance,” Sánchez said on Tuesday adding that nuclear power generation “was no more resilient” than other electricity sources His words did nothing to reassure Vox’s leader, Santiago Abascal, who used a post on X to hit back at the prime minister “The blackout is down to you and your disastrous energy policies You said this couldn’t happen … Now that it has happened you need to go and face the judicial consequences.” Corredor also said it was incorrect to link the blackout to Spain’s increasing reliance on renewable energy “The renewables mix is safe and it can form part of all the safety systems of the electrical operating system,” she told Cadena Ser “Linking what happened on Monday to renewables isn’t correct We are looking now at a war running for more than two years There is a lot of uncertainty especially around the US election has done everything it could to help Ukraine win this war There was fighting and casualties almost every week and it is important to remember that.  a lot of valuable time has been lost in between There wasn’t enough momentum in the Kharkiv counter-offensive to bring victory home The Ukrainians didn’t get enough equipment and couldn’t push forward and keep control of the territory at the same time Today we see both sides digging in and to make a difference on the battlefield Ukraine is going to need more I have said on many forums that we have to decide whether we want Ukraine to win or just fight the question is to win or not to win — Russia is still attacking they haven’t stopped because there’s an election in the US and Ukraine certainly doesn’t have the luxury of time If there is a window of opportunity for Ukraine between now and the inauguration in January has said on numerous occasions that Allies should stop worrying about a possible return of Donald Trump and focus on the task at hand Donald Trump’s tone on Ukraine is different to that of President Biden but my point is this is why the European Union has to do so much more to show the United States that we are taking this seriously.  You recently said limitations for Ukraine in terms of weapons and its capacity to hit Russia deeper inside its territory are self-defeating It is like the metaphor of a man riding a horse kicking it to go faster while pulling back the reins Is this a fair battle? These restrictions have a negative effect as the Ukrainians are unable to take full advantage of Western capabilities and perform to the best of their ability on the battlefield is that Ukraine is modernising its industry very quickly as a result Today we see that they have weapons systems built in Ukraine that can reach 1,000 kilometres into Russian territory I have no doubt that they will develop their own industry as much as possible It is not rocket science to build a missile It’s only a matter of time before they reach the capacity of a Storm Shadow But time is critical and therefore we should give them everything and lift all restrictions. The German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been clear Berlin will not change its position on the Taurus Are these limitations the product of fear of Russia and what a defeated Russia could mean I don’t hear this at the highest political level That is why I insist that we should stop talking about escalation It’s not a question of Ukraine escalating violating every aspect of international law Ukraine is not escalating and that is the point We shouldn’t be talking about escalation and limits That is not helpful. So why are there still limitations We should ask the governments that still have these restrictions No single weapon that will bring victory home It is a combination — sending these weapons They need that motivation and they need to see that they have the means to fight for their country to destroy the depots of ammunition and missiles that Russia is using against them We see that the Ukrainians can do this.  Giving Ukraine a fair chance to defend itself would show that we will do so for as long as it takes and as much as it takes.  President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has now unveiled his plan for victory Some would argue that it calls for more arms but doesn’t offer any clues on the diplomatic and political front When you hear things like dividing the country giving up land in exchange for NATO membership or faster EU integration does that sound right to you? There are things Ukraine needs to win the war and Zelenskiy knows that On top of that comes the political and diplomatic discussions regarding There are decisions we could make about munitions when you look at your own history and your country how do you react to that?Giving up land is not a solution to war we did not have the right to decide for ourselves The only nation that can decide how it wants to live is Ukraine and the Ukrainian people because it means that we are forcing Ukraine to the negotiating table The only thing we should agree on together is that international law must be respected That means going back to the borders that were established after the collapse of the Soviet Union the war will end.If Ukraine is pushed into a deal the Baltic states and Poland are geographically particularly exposed to Russia It is important that the NATO alliance remains strong and united because that is the only guarantee of security for us in Europe That is why it is so important for Ukraine to receive an invitation to join NATO The one thing I know is that Ukraine would be the first to defend Estonia Do you believe Russia could attack a NATO country There are different sensitivities among Allies on this subject others believe it is plausible.History shows a pattern of behaviour Putin’s speech at the Munich Security Conference in 2008 You will see that there is a plan to re-establish a kind of grey zone He would recreate an empire if he could.  This is something that has been 20 years in the making We have no interest in reaching Moscow or even going as far as Pskov on the border with Estonia If Putin wants to create a demilitarised zone he is welcome to do so on Russian territory because this is how KGB officer Vladimir Putin operates This is the Cold War mentality.Earlier this month General Rajmund Andrzejczak of Poland suggested NATO deterrence should be more forceful making it clear to Russia that an attack on the Baltics or Poland would be met with a powerful response “within minutes” Is this a message that you share?Of course we would defend from the first minute That is the only way we can approach defending Estonia we would hit back in the first minutes. Are you convinced your Allies would be as forceful? If I wasn’t we wouldn’t be in an alliance.  Portuguese and Italian citizen is that this isn’t just about the Baltic States or Poland We have built an alliance that has been able to defend our countries and keep the peace for 75 years We have set out very clearly what NATO countries have to do to defend the Alliance The numbers show that we have not done enough over the last 30 years Let me give you two figures: Russian defence spending has increased by almost 600% in 25 years; in the European Union the figure is 43% But credible deterrence also means that you have to invest more produce more and learn the lessons from Ukraine. In this scenario of being ready do you foresee the return of compulsory military service because we cannot compare small countries like Estonia or Finland which have a large land border with Russia where we have the reserve army and conscription It is up to each country to decide what is the best model for them and how to organise their military.  What I would say is that we must be able to meet the criteria that we have agreed together in NATO and in the new regional plan for the defence of Europe as part of the North Atlantic community.  Poland has suggested military spending could be exempted from budgetary rules to provide more fiscal space for what they believe is a strategic security priority I do not want to rush these changes because fiscal stability is also part of your sovereignty it will be very difficult to manage defence spending and everything else that the state requires That is why I find the idea of joint purchases but there is also a large area of common needs for all Member States When Ursula von der Leyen presented her 500 billion euro proposal for defence Let’s agree that this is a joint effort and then we won’t have to talk about 3% deficits and exemptions for each country.  In-depth analysis and updates from Groupe d'études géopolitiques Since explorer Vasco da Gama’s arrival there in 1498, Portugal had steadily expanded their holdings, building a fort at Kochi, conquering Goa, and establishing more Southeast Asian footholds, such as at Malacca in modern-day Malaysia According to Silvio Bedini, author of The Pope’s Elephant Portugal’s King Manuel I purchased the elephant as a gift for Pope Leo X In early 1511, Hanno, accompanied by his mahouts, was loaded onto a ship in the bustling port of Kochi, leaving his south Indian home forever. For about six months, Hanno withstood sun and rain on the ship’s open deck, traveling around the Cape of Good Hope and north to Lisbon Rubbed with oil against the salt air and tethered to the mast during rough weather Hanno was far from the comfort of his natural habitat and the solace of other elephants “When [young elephants] fear anything that happens in the external world,” says Sangita Iyer, author and founding executive director of Voices for Asian Elephants “they go and hide beneath the mom so they feel protected.” Hanno would’ve had no such solace The young elephant was shipped off with King Manuel’s vast array of gifts for Pope Leo Everywhere the ship stopped, crowds flocked to see Hanno. In the Spanish city of Alicante those aboard could not keep curious spectators off the boat the royal equerry responsible for the elephant they reached the tiny Tuscan town of Porto Ercole where Faria had to commandeer a galley to bring Hanno to dry land but that soon proved impossible when the townsfolk and farmers all came to witness Hanno’s arrival They proceeded like a traveling carnival as spectators joined Hanno and the Portuguese envoy on the road south to Rome All those people “add to the strain—the mental and physical and psychological strain—that this poor elephant had to put up with she says transporting the giants “is never easy on the elephant.” More and more people followed Hanno and Faria on horseback and foot The unwieldy caravan damaged land and property Its tough surface abraded Hanno’s feet and increasingly frequent stops were required for the elephant to recover “The feet of the elephant are one of the most important parts of their body,” says Iyer it impacts the leg and then it impacts the body.” Foot rot Faria was bombarded with requests that the elephant visit this castle or that villa They were actually running ahead of schedule They were running early enough for their planned entry into Rome that a stay was arranged at a cardinal’s villa outside the city clambering over walls and trampling vineyards Despite all these difficulties, a four-year-old Hanno made a triumphant entry into Rome on March 19, 1514, bearing a silver castle-like structure on his back and delighting onlookers with salutes of his trunk Hanno swiftly became one of the pope’s favorite prizes But the pope’s favor did little to benefit the poor elephant so far from home At least 13 Asian elephants were brought to Portugal in the 16th century who was given to Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II they were lavished with attention as symbols of a ruler’s prestige “Manuel I delighted in his elephants and always did parades around the city with them and his mahouts to show off what kind of global ruler he had become,” says Gschwend Elephants served as a “connection to the East and to the old ancient Roman and Greek culture.” They were symbols of “splendor and globalism.” Rulers like Manuel I and Pope Leo X prized elephants but Europeans and even Indian mahouts didn’t know how to care for the animals so far from home Hanno would only survive two years in Rome despite the attention of the city’s very best physicians his urine was tested and his blood let before he was given a purgative containing gold These were all common medical treatments for people the young elephant died when he was only about six years old well short of the 60-year lifespan of wild Asian elephants Knowledge of elephants has come a long way since Hanno’s time but tragically that has not always led to improved care human desire for entertainment and power is often placed before an elephant’s well-being People “are still capturing elephants from the wild,” says Iyer Elephants are still considered a status symbol.” Now that they are no longer used in war or industry “How do you still exploit them?” “The past can teach us to protect the present,” and Hanno’s story reminds us that “we need to preserve our planet and our animals.” We depend on ad revenue to craft and curate stories about the world’s hidden wonders Consider supporting our work by becoming a member for as little as $5 a month Follow us on Twitter to get the latest on the world's hidden wonders Like us on Facebook to get the latest on the world's hidden wonders You are using an outdated browser. Musk’s apocalyptic rhetoric and alignment with forces often labelled extremist are deeply unsettling in a country still grappling with the weight of its 20th-century atrocities. His political meddling – from the US to the UK and now Germany – follows a disturbing pattern of self-aggrandisement cloaked in dangerous ideology At the same time, Musk’s views are hardly a surprise. His rightward drift has been years in the making logically – in his support for a party that mirrors some of his core obsessions: nationalist salvation fantasies His endorsement aligns with a broader shift in Germany’s public discourse where far-right narratives have been steadily normalised in both conservative and liberal circles Musk’s argument in the article itself was so simplistic it sparked speculation about whether it might have been AI-generated His reasoning hinged on praising the AfD’s “political realism” and deregulatory agenda coupled with the claim that the party couldn’t really be “far right” because its co-leader A superficial logic that chips away at the carefully cultivated aura of Musk as a brilliant Take Bild, Springer’s infamous tabloid powerhouse and Germany’s most widely distributed newspaper. In 2023, it published a 50-point manifesto demanding that immigrants respect “German values” claiming: “We are experiencing a new dimension of hatred in our country – against our values democracy and Germany.” The text leaned heavily on anti-Muslim tropes painting immigrants as knife-wielding savages who scorn women the AfD’s cultural essentialism resonates far beyond its voter base Such alleged entanglements between tech oligarchs media powerbrokers and politicians underscore the growing international networks fuelling today’s global far-right resurgence Why did it take Musk’s name to sound the alarm wasted no time echoing the tabloid’s condemnation This pattern – stoking outrage with rightwing agendas – reflects how Germany’s establishment increasingly co-opts far-right rhetoric to undercut its appeal. But instead of containing the AfD, this strategy has further legitimised its ideas fuelling its historic successes in states such as Saxony and Thuringia its influence on public discourse continues to grow While Germany’s established parties still formally reject coalition-building with the AfD their increasing adoption of AfD-style rhetoric tells a different story Against this backdrop, fixating solely on Musk’s endorsement feels like a distraction. Yes, his alignment with the AfD is alarming. As is his promotion of figures such as the German rightwing influencer Naomi Seibt whose positions Musk has repeatedly endorsed But the deeper issue is that many of the AfD’s core ideas – anti-migrant culture wars and ethnonationalist alliances – are already entrenched within Germany’s political mainstream Allowing Musk to use his outsized influence and resources to meddle in German or European elections would be a grave mistake Yet focusing on Musk as an anomaly is hypocritical It allows Germany’s liberal establishment to avoid reckoning with its own complicity in normalising reactionary ideas Hanno Hauenstein is a Berlin-based journalist and author The Gabelli School of Business ranks among the top 50 undergraduate schools for entrepreneurship studies for 2025 The school took the 38th spot nationwide and 5th in the Northeast This was the first time the Gabelli School has been named in this ranking, and its inclusion reflects investments Fordham has made to nurture an entrepreneurial spirit, said Dennis Hanno who leads the school’s entrepreneurship programming “We are gaining momentum,” he said. “We’re dedicating more resources both in our curriculum and in places like the Fordham Foundry,” Hanno said which helps students and alumni start viable recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.  Hanno cited The Ground Floor course as one example of how first-year students are exposed to entrepreneurship Every student who takes it pitches a new business idea to a panel of judges at the end of the semester The Princeton Review entrepreneurship rating follows other impressive rankings for Fordham’s business school. Poets & Quants ranked the school 21st among the best undergraduate business schools in the country for 2024 News & World Report ranked the Gabelli School 77th in the country It also singled out specific undergraduate business programs: The school ranked 13th for finance Hanno also noted that entrepreneurship at Fordham extends beyond the Gabelli School. The Fordham Foundry, for instance, holds a separate pitch challenge that is open to all students “Whether you’re in business school or not you’re going to have opportunities here from day one to connect with people who have been entrepreneurs and have worked with entrepreneurs of all different kinds,” said Hanno “We embrace a broader definition of entrepreneurship to include social impact as a major focus of what we do,” said Hanno, who created a Fordham course called Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Rwanda. They may have been the ancestors of "SHIP'S CAT," the guardian deity of navigation The name "SHIP'S CAT" comes from the "Sailor Cat," who boarded ships from the ancient Orient and traveled around the world during the Age of Exploration The cats were scattered all over the Earth and some of them lived hidden in the deep forest where the lake was The space cats brought the "seeds of life" to Earth and spread "culture".. "As far as I know, Ukrainians can handle all of this, when we can deliver all what they need for fighting with Russia," Pevkur said Pevkur highlighted Ukraine’s growing capacity to produce military equipment including howitzers at six to seven times the rate of France he noted a critical funding gap: "Their industry is really ramping up production.. So when you don’t have anything to give from your own stockpiles It’s a simple message," he told The Hill Reflecting on Ukraine’s past counteroffensives Pevkur called the lack of sufficient equipment during the surprise Kursk incursion in August a missed opportunity "There was a huge momentum in this war during the Kursk counteroffensive Ukrainians didn’t have enough equipment or enough firepower to push even further," he said He urged Western allies to commit fully to helping Ukraine achieve victory Pevkur warned that the next six months of political transitions in the U.S. and Europe could embolden adversaries like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea Estonia remains vigilant against potential hybrid attacks, with Pevkur citing suspected Russian cyber attacks, sabotage of Baltic undersea cables and interference with flight communications as examples of ongoing threats "We know very clearly what Russia is capable of.. defence industry companies and to familiarize themselves with each other’s products "The strong point of Estonian defence industry is undoubtedly everything related to unmanned aerial vehicles our companies should not limit themselves to these areas—they should seek opportunities to produce heavy weapons and ammunition There is certainly much to learn from the Ukrainians," Pevkur emphasized He also noted that closer cooperation between the defence industries of the two countries contributes to strengthening the security of both Estonia and Ukraine Former State Pathway player Hanno Jacobs is set to return to South Australia as a new addition to the South Australia Men’s squad on a three-year deal Jacobs made his first-class debut for New South Wales in February 2025 against Queensland in the Sheffield Shield showcasing his potential and marking a promising start to his career at this level Jacobs demonstrated his all-round capabilities in the Prime Minister’s XI match against India in late 2024 He scored an impressive 61 runs off 60 balls making him the second-highest run-scorer for the innings Jacobs has been a key player for the ACT Comets in the Toyota Second XI competition His consistent performances have made him a valuable asset to the team Jacobs has also played for the Western Suburbs District Cricket Club in the NSW Premier Cricket competition and Australian National University Cricket Club in the ACT Premier Cricket competition Previously a member of the South Australia Under 19s program before moving to Canberra to further his studies Jacobs said he is looking forward to returning to Adelaide and I feel genuinely privileged to be joining the South Australia Men I’m excited to reconnect with familiar faces catch up with people I haven’t seen in a while and standout player of high potential He has consistently shown his ability to perform under pressure and contribute significantly to his teams We are excited to see his continued growth and success in the upcoming season.” With his impressive performances and dedication Hanno Jacobs is set to be a valuable addition to the South Australia Men’s squad The association looks forward to his contributions in the upcoming season and beyond We acknowledge the Kaurna people as the Traditional Custodians of this country and we pay our respects to Kaurna Elders past We also extend that respect to all traditional owners of country throughout South Australia held an opening ceremony for the contemporary art museum HYPER MUSEUM HANNO The opening ceremony included a preview for the media and a ribbon-cutting ceremony by museum director Goto Tsuneo who is in charge of the opening special exhibition Hyper Museum Hanno is located in the rich natural environment of metsä and aims to provide an experience of combining nature and digital through art the facility also offers outdoor exhibits and experiential workshop programs providing an art experience that combines the real and the virtual The opening ceremony was held under a calm blue sky with the approximately 4-meter-tall "Ships Cat" statue in the background and museum director Goto gave an opening speech "Hyper means 'to exceed,' so Hyper Museum is something that goes beyond a museum We named it this to express the challenge of creating a contemporary art museum in Hanno as a museum that takes on various challenges The power of art is currently attracting a lot of attention in various fields but I believe the role of artists is whether they can ask questions and propose new values to the times What we wanted to challenge here at Metsä Village is to support the imagination of artists but we want to challenge ourselves to create a museum that uses the entire forest." "When we decided to display some kind of art in this rich natural setting the image of a giant cat sleeping on the island came to me We are holding an exhibition in the heart of Ginza and although I was worried about what we could do in a location that is different to the city center I was moved to see the vision I saw a year ago take shape I believe that the experience of being able to travel by boat to a museum island floating on a lake is something that is unique in the world." [Opening Special Exhibition] Kenji Yanobe "The Secret Island of Space Cats" (HYPER MUSEUM HANNO / KENJI YANOBE SHIP'S CAT ISLAND) a giant floating island of a sleeping cat will appear on Lake Miyazawa on the metsä grounds as a sequel to the hugely popular and much-talked-about large-scale exhibition at GINZA SIX The exhibition room will begin with the backstory of Space Cat and will feature a look back at the 1990 years since Yanobe's debut as an artist in 35 connecting his work to the present day with sculptures Egypt’s Minister of Culture Ahmed Hanno and Nasir Shamma along with the exhibition’s attendees Hanno Erythropel completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering in 2016 synthesizing and testing greener plasticizers he is an associate research scientist at Yale University working on various Green Chemistry projects such as determining e-cigarette safety or reducing the environmental burden of pharmaceuticals Q: What do you value most about your time in the PhD I loved the interdisciplinary nature of my project which led me to learn a lot of new things I came with a chemistry background but did my PhD in chemical engineering and also learned a lot about materials engineering I was testing the biodegradability of the compounds I  synthesized and tested This is what I mean by the highly interdisciplinary nature of my thesis I think I can say that felt pretty comfortable about mastering the techniques I acquired I would speak French at home at night and English during the day I always joke that my French is rather colloquial as I learned it mainly during social interactions while my English is rather professional as I used it mainly during work hours Q: What were the biggest challenges for you throughout your PhD and what helped you to overcome them I think part of what was challenging was learning to write scientifically because it’s something that I simply hadn’t mastered before I had really good mentorship from my supervisors who spent quite some time going over manuscripts making edits—not just writing a few comments left and right but really going through and editing so I could see what had been changed and get used to some of those standard ways of saying certain things and Jim Nicell over the course of my studies at McGill motivation ultimately is a factor for many people as well We went ahead and published something during my PhD relatively early on It was nice to see something substantial coming out An outsider might say “whether or not there’s a publication Your name is on it and it’s official that you can actually do this thing Q: You mentioned your supervisors helped a lot with writing What other roles did your supervisors play during your PhD They certainly helped not only with writing How do you tackle them and how do you analyze data They helped with a lot of those basic research skills I was used to interactions with professors being very formal: you would make an appointment with a secretary one of my first interactions at McGill—when I started I think one of the first days—was both of my supervisors saying  “why don’t we go over to Thompson house and have a beer and discuss your project?” I wasn’t used to that For someone coming from a foreign country to Canada so that was certainly part of the help they provided I would also like to mention that while my supervisors naturally played a big role for me so did the colleagues I was privileged to work with With the McGill student body being as diverse as it is I really enjoyed getting to know many people with all kinds of backgrounds and knowledge That includes working directly with my fellow lab colleagues as well as the activities we ran through the grad student society in Chemical Engineering as well as university-wide Q: Did you have the chance to mentor students yourself during your PhD Basically every summer I got to supervise at least one undergraduate intern That was another good thing I learned from my supervisors We would always make sure that interns had a project for themselves that could stand on its own it would be related to some of the work I was doing It feels nicer when you have a clear question and outcome versus “I’m just going to help somebody for two months in the lab.” I think most of my summer students got to co-author at least one manuscript because they did play a role in getting that work done So that was a nice outcome for them not only for having their name on something but also because it’s important for their future career Q: What kind of financial support did you receive during your PhD I had a MEDA (McGill Engineering Doctoral Award) so I got a stipend and my tuition paid for I would have also been paid and I wouldn’t have had to pay tuition So this was nice although I must say that I would not have done a PhD at McGill if I hadn’t received a tuition waiver and a stipend I was also so fortunate to get an FRQNT merit scholarship for foreign students That was a nice recognition of my work and also meant getting a little more pay than with the MEDA Q: Are there connections between the work you’re doing now and what did in your PhD The plasticizer work I did at McGill was a rather specific application of green chemistry principles to one class of products. I was able to expand upon that here, thinking more broadly about green chemistry and green engineering. For example, together with a bigger team, we wrote a review paper on the achievements in the field 20 years after the first book on green chemistry came out Montrealers will notice the nod to the city by looking at the total number of references in that article: 514 I also work on more specific projects here at Yale For example, I’ve been working on the question of what kinds of ingredients are commonly used in e-cigarettes, and how these may interact with one another. Spoiler alert: they can, and they do they had built a custom “vaping-machine” that could model someone vaping and then collect the vapour that was generated We can compare what’s in the liquid and what’s in the aerosol and compare the two That’s obviously important—you can say all you want about what happens inside the liquid but you also need to prove that it reaches the user That work was then used to inform toxicology and physiological studies on these compounds and products at large Q: Is there anything about your PhD experience that I did not ask you about that you would like to share for this project There is one really cool thing that happened At FRQNT they are highlighting scientific publications from Quebec researchers once a month in three different fields (“jeune chercheur étoile”) to which I submitted one of my papers and  won a prize Part of the prize was a feature in the  scientific magazine for kids called ‘Curium’ In every issue they would do a little story on the person who won that prize but they had a professional make a little comic out of my research They did a really good job and I love this comic and still use it in presentations to date is there something you wish you knew before starting your PhD the things I’m writing in here…” If I had known those things before I started the PhD I would have done a few things differently I guess that’s something that many people experience I did what I could at the time and now I know more But if I can give any advice to new PhD students: you will really benefit from a thorough literature review early on I mean it: I actually went back to some articles from the 1950s that were only published in German (this is where my mother tongue came in handy) I don’t think there are many better places to do a PhD ITP.net Home » Videos » Revealing the Future of Defence-HE Hanno Pevkur of Estonia Talks Strategy Defence Minister of Estonia dives deep into the nation’s innovative strategies for military aid which the Estonian government is now procuring from Estonian companies for a total of €100 million The selection includes Unmanned Aerial and Ground Vehicles medical equipment and supplies offered by Estonian defence firms Estonia will continue to support Ukraine with at least 0.25% of its GDP annually and is increasing that amount by another quarter this year The majority of
