composite could significantly reduce the cost of building nuclear reactor containment structures Office of Nuclear Energy A research team led by GE Hitachi Nuclear successfully tested a modular steel-concrete composite that could significantly reduce the cost of building nuclear reactor containment structures The new composite is one of three advanced construction technologies that the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) is exploring to reduce nuclear construction costs by up to 10%.    The Diaphragm Plate Steel Composite (DPSC) test specimens were recently tested at Purdue University’s Bowen Laboratory in Lafayette Researchers filled the modular plates with concrete to simulate a reactor containment wall and subjected the structure to various loading conditions to mimic real-life situations a reactor building might experience The small-scale demonstration was a success and cleared the way for the advanced construction technology to be used in future demonstration projects.  “The DPSC system tests at Purdue exceeded our expectations,” said Luke Voss program manager at Idaho National Laboratory “We are very excited and enthusiastic about the use of this construction technology to help save time and money in the deployment of new nuclear reactors.”  fabrication and testing of DPSC modules demonstrates the potential of this advanced fabrication and construction technology to lead to cost savings and improved project schedules in the deployment of small modular reactors,” said Sean Sexstone The DPSC design has several advantages over traditional steel concrete composite techniques such as reinforcing concrete with two continuous steel plates connected using adjoining plates with circular concrete flow holes.   The steel wall modules can be fabricated in a shop and shipped to the construction site while site preparations are underway The various modules are then assembled on site and filled with concrete leading to faster assembly and installation— saving on labor costs and project schedule.  The modules can also be manufactured to have different plate material on either side of a wall to better meet certain corrosion requirements in nuclear power plants.   the modules can be welded together end-to-end or stacked vertically for improved design flexibility and faster quality control inspections.    The data collected during the small-scale demonstration will be used to support licensing of the modules for use in future reactor containment construction.  DOE’s National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) is currently evaluating a proposal from GE Hitachi to build a portion of a reactor containment building using the DPSC design for the walling system to further test the technology.   The demonstration would also implement digital twin technologies on the civil structure and nondestructive evaluation techniques that were developed in the original phase of the project.   GE-Hitachi plans to use the DPSC technique for its first four units of the BWXR-300 small modular reactor in Ontario The company confirmed suffering a ransomware attack Hitachi Vantara was forced to pull parts of its IT infrastructure offline to Its name was chosen for being “suggestive”, according to CEO Brian Householder in 2017 Digital Systems & Services revenues were 2,599 billion yen ($18.4bn) and a rise of 4% year-on-year Vantara storage appears to be a relatively small part of Digital Systems & Services IDC reckoned the company’s external storage system revenues at $1.55bn and a market share of 4.9% in which it had storage array revenue and share of $1.42bn and 4.4% That puts Hitachi Vantara seventh in the IDC ranking of storage array players Hitachi Vantara’s flagship storage platform is Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) One. VSP One – launched in late 2024 – offers a single data fabric across on-premise and cloud with all-QLC and object storage products added at that time Top of the line in block storage is the VSP 5000 series which comes as the all-flash 5200 and 5600 with an H-suffix variant to each that indicates the possibility of spinning disk HDD capacity Per node, each offer 65,280 LUNs at 256TB per LUN and maximum 1,024 snapshots per LUN The 5200 offers capacity up to just below 300PB NVMe SCM (storage class memory) can be fitted The ratio of NVMe flash to SAS HDDs possible is about 1:8 with the latter going up to drive sizes of 18TB The 5600 model gains a much higher drive and port count Throughput is also very much improved over the 5200 (312GBps vs 52GBps) VSP block storage arrays run a common operating system The VSP One Block range is aimed at the midrange and comes in a 2U form factor with options for TLC and QLC flash storage capacity It can scale per appliance from 32TB effective to 1.8PB and to 65 nodes It also runs SVOS – that can manage other suppliers’ arrays – and can run file and S3 object Vantara’s E series are the E590 and E790 – it seems to have lost the E1090 since we last surveyed the company These also scale to PBs but lack the mainframe access of the 5000s They also retain spinning disk HDD capacity VSP One SDS is a software-defined platform aimed at “distributed block applications” that potentially run to PB scale It runs on third-party hardware and in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud A key idea is that customers have a great deal of flexibility in how they deploy it SVOS allows for data flow across applications and locations with Kubernetes APIs to allow containerised applications Hitachi Vantara’s file storage offer comes in the form of VSP One File series VSP One File 32 is aimed at entry-level and cost-sensitive deployments while the 34 aims at customers that want all-flash – presumably the 32 uses HDDs – and the 38 is built for all-out performance Each model is also distinguished by connectivity options – more Ethernet bandwidth Fibre Channel choices and raw bandwidth – and node count (from 20 to 80) VSP One File arrays also have some S3 object storage capability but only as a tier for connection to the cloud Object storage is served by VSP One Object providing S3 native storage that can scale from a few TB to 150TB per node in a minimum eight-node cluster It’s aimed at data lake and data warehouse Hitachi Content Platform is the company’s unstructured data platform It comes as a physical or virtual (HIES) has begun operating a next-generation power conditioner*1 called a Grid Forming Inverter (GFM) at its Narashino Works facility in Chiba Prefecture This cutting-edge system helps stabilize electric power systems as global transition to renewable energy by simulating the stabilizing effects once provided by large power plants As renewable energy becomes a bigger part of the power mix older systems that relied on heavy rotating generators are retiring but they also provided valuable "inertia" that kept the grid stable during power fluctuation between demand and supply supporting a reliable power supply for the future Electricity must be supplied at a stable frequency to keep our power systems running smoothly -typically at 50 Hz or 60 Hz large power plants helped maintain that frequency because their heavy turbines had "inertia," a natural resistance to sudden changes As more renewable energy sources like solar and wind replace thermal power plants using fossil fuels that inertia in power system is decreasing These newer systems can't stabilize frequency in the same way increasing the risk of frequency fluctuations or even blackouts helping to balance the grid and maintain a stable supply of electricity – even when demand suddenly changes Unlike conventional inverters that simply follow the power grid GFMs can create and stabilize their own grid working together with other units to form self-sustaining microgrids*2 This makes them important for supporting local energy systems improving grid resilience and enabling carbon neutrality Narashino Works now runs on a system that combines solar energy battery storage and inverter technology to reduce CO₂ emissions and keep operations required in the emergency event– even during blackouts of utility grid Since DC power supply has an advantage in environmental performance this system was selected for a carbon reduction subsidy from Japan's Ministry of the Environment Information contained in this cloud management subsidiary of Hitachi Computer Software Computer Software Artificial Intelligence Data Analytics Aiming to Build Resilient IT Infrastructure Through Distributed Data Centers VSP One Block is a storage solution that uses virtualization to manage multiple storage units across locations as a single entity ensuring reliable business continuity during disasters Recognized for its exceptional capabilities it leverages best-in-class synchronous data replication and advanced protection technologies to enable seamless recovery and continuous operations is a network technology that offers low power consumption the combination of these two innovative solutions achieved round-trip times for long-distance data synchronization well within the times recommended by Hitachi confirming that seamless system recovery is possible even during disasters An IOWN APN was used during the demonstration to connect two VSP One Block storage systems creating a virtual environment with a simulated separation of 600 km equivalent to the distance between Tokyo and Osaka Data synchronization times were measured using Hitachi's Global-Active Device storage technology*4 By improving the network's response times through the superior network latency and reduced jitter*5 of the IOWN APN resulted in a round-trip response time (within 20msec) was achieved that far exceeded Hitachi's recommended network response time*6 This confirms that stable data synchronization can be established over such distances It is believed to be the first time anywhere in the world that constant data synchronization has been achieved over a distance of 600km*7 typically deployed within just a single data center was used during the demonstration to evaluate likely system recovery times following a disaster Redundancy was established between the two data centers and a simulated failure was introduced at the main site to test whether operations could continue using the backup site Full system availability was automatically restored at the back-up site without any loss of data confirming that seamless business continuity is possible even after a disaster there will be no need for system engineers to perform such tasks as switching from the main site to the sub-site or recovering lost data as there will no longer be a need to maintain multiple data sets asynchronously and back them up resulting in lower IT infrastructure maintenance costs and reduced power consumption The demonstration was conducted collaboratively with each company fulfilling the following roles: The increased frequency of major natural disasters in Japan and the corresponding need to strengthen resilience have accelerated the adoption of disaster recovery systems among corporations in mission-critical sectors such as finance and infrastructure the rising costs of system construction and maintenance the need to ensure business continuity during a disaster and the extensive recovery times remain major burdens for companies in these sectors the rise of generative AI is driving explosive growth in the demand for data processing intensifying the environmental impact due to increased energy consumption there are high expectations for the realization of distributed data centers across Japan that make use of green energy This technical verification forms part of the efforts to enable real-time connectivity between geographically distant data centers allowing businesses to use them as if they were a single By connecting data centers over long distances it becomes possible to strategically locate them in regions with more space and renewable energy resources thereby avoiding the concentration of data centers in urban areas inclusive society that embraces diversity requires the adoption of innovative technologies such as optical networks and generative AI Realizing sustainable data centers to support these advancements is critical to this goal the combination of Hitachi Vantara and IOWN APN's storage solutions aims to deliver next-generation IT infrastructure capable of real-time data synchronization over long distances The system will cater to mission-critical infrastructure Hitachi Vantara looks to take it to a wider range of enterprises and eventually midrange customers looking for a complete technology stack for AI workloads Data storage and infrastructure technology developer Hitachi Vantara Tuesday unveiled a new version of its Hitachi iQ AI solution stack that features Nvidia’s HGX GPUs brings Hitachi Vantara’s AI-ready infrastructure technologies together with Nvidia’s GPU technologies Hitachi Vantara’s director for AI and unstructured solutions product marketing The Hitachi iQ brand encompasses AI-ready infrastructure stacks and services the company brings to market The first was in July with the launch of Hitachi iQ with Nvidia DGX GPUs and Nvidia BasePod certification she said Hitachi Vantara is officially launching Hitachi iQ with Nvidia’s HGX GPU the Hitachi iQ AI systems are integrated in the field the HGX versions are integrated by Hitachi Vantara before shipping to channel partners and customers for final configuration “What’s exciting about this is we are reselling all of it,” she said “Nvidia’s DGX can only be sold by DGX-certified partners we're packaging it and reselling the whole solution which is basically a framework to build AI applications on and that goes right out of our distribution center directly to customers.” The DGX was one of the original high-end GPU servers that Nvidia built and were originally shipped by Nvidia to the company’s ODM partners senior director for AI solutions product management at Hitachi Vantara “The HGX H100s and H200 we’re selling are basically Supermicro versions of the DGX,” Hemminger told CRN About 90 percent of the value of the system is still the GPUs we ran through the BasePod testing with DGX we took the DGX out and replaced it with the HGX and validated that they get basically the same performance The Hitachi iQ integrated system includes an Nvidia HGX H100 system based on a Supermicro SuperServer; Nvidia software including Nvidia Base Command Manager Nvidia AI Enterprise and Nvidia GPU Direct Storage; Hitachi Content Software for File with Hitachi Vantara storage nodes; Nvidia networking components; and Hitachi Vantara HA810 G3 servers for management The go-to-market for the DGX and HGX versions is different “The go-to-market with the DGX is basically meet-in-the-channel and work with DGX-authorized resellers to differentiate our storage solution and our other solutions so that so they plug those in,” he said our go-to-market is we can sell everything.” Loughlin said this gives partners who aren’t DGX-certified a fully integrated stack solution to resell “We are having numerous conversations with DGX-certified partners to then have them sell … So there’s a lot of different go-to-market avenues that we’re working on with partners,” she said Hitachi Vantara expects the Hitachi iQ’s primary workloads to be mainly large language model creation “You’ll probably see that more in the mid-range to entry products In terms of industry verticals and use cases right now we’re focused mostly on where we’re strong Hemminger said that Hitachi Vantara has seen no supply issues related to recent reports that Nvidia is shifting some orders away from Supermicro that’s not been an issue at this point,” he said you basically had to get special permission ‘Restricted.’ The approved list was about 50 countries worldwide So more countries got put on the restricted list and Supermicro now because we have to get exceptions every time for the countries on those restricted list just that what countries we can sell to without having to deal with anything is.” The expansion of Hitachi iQ is really an evolution of what Hitachi has always done Calif.-based solution provider and longtime Hitachi Vantara channel partner “Hitachi Vantara’s message has stayed fairly consistent,” Cerniglia told CRN “It’s all about the data and what do you do with that data You have these enterprises and mid-size companies out there collecting massive amounts of data AI is just another way of how you leverage that data and how do you leverage those workflows to make an organization more profitable.” Cerniglia said Hitachi Vantara continues to unveil technologies that are increasingly robust and scalable that they can deliver to their customers with these massive amounts of data,” he said how do you turn a company’s data into intelligence How do you turn that data into being an asset I think it’s another way for us to be able to offer customers more for what they’re looking for.” Acquiring and planning
