The incredible real life story of The Elusive Samurai
The Elusive Samurai from CloverWorks has been hailed as one of the highlights of the summer anime season
Based on a manga of the same name by Yusei Matsui
it tells the story of Hojo Tokiyuki — a young samurai noble with a near superhuman ability to flee and dodge attacks — as he tries to avenge his clan after they were betrayed by a trusted general
Because of its fantastical elements and a bold mixture of comedy and outlandishly gruesome violence
it might surprise some to hear that The Elusive Samurai is based on fact
and while the anime does get a lot of details right about him
there are still some things that the show skips over
which resulted in the end of the Kamakura Shogunate
The Hojo were once the de facto rulers of Japan, thanks in no small part to the Nun Shogun
their power dwindled and they faced growing opposition from Emperor Go-Daigo and later their turncoat general Ashikaga Takauji
The near total slaughter of the Hojo clan in 1333 spelled the end of the Kamakura period and paved the way for the Muromachi period (1336–1573)
It was a turbulent time that saw the creation of the Ashikaga shogunate and the establishment of two opposing imperial courts
Many modern accounts of this time don’t mention him at all
I’ve made it clear that Tokiyuki’s special talent is his skill in running away… because I thought that was not historically wrong.”
it’s owned by the Imperial Household Agency and is considered one of the Tenka-Goken — the Five Greatest Swords in Japan
Tokiyuki is said to have never parted with Onimaru but was ultimately forced to leave the sword behind in truly gruesome circumstances
While retreating from Ashikaga forces in 1335
the Hojo vassal who took Tokiyuki in after the death of his family and helped him raise an army
He’s also one of the main characters in the anime so consider this a spoiler warning
The story goes that Yorishige and his retainers committed seppuku and had their faces peeled off by the last member of their suicide party
Some sources go as far as to claim that they peeled off their faces themselves
The point was to obscure their identity and
thanks to the presence of Onimaru near the corpses
convince the enemy that Tokiyuki was among the faceless dead
giving the elusive samurai more time to escape
The sword later became one of the regalia of the Ashikaga shoguns
said to be where Tokiyuki Hojo was executed
Tokiyuki’s fight against imperial forces during the aftermath of Takauji’s betrayal was meant to restore the Kamakura government
Tokiyuki took the city back in 1335 and was ready to start ruling
Since his clan was no more and he was never officially named regent like his father
his time in Kamakura isn’t considered a continuation of the Hojo’s rule
And because he was later driven out of the city (resulting in the loss of Onimaru and Suwa Yorishige’s close shave)
a tiny link between the Hojo and the later rule of Emperor Go-Daigo and the Ashikaga shogunate
And we do mean tiny because Tokiyuki only spent about 20 days in Kamakura before retreating
It’s why this whole episode is sometimes called the “20-Day Period.”
but as a servant of Emperor Go-Daigo to whom he submitted after Ashikaga Takauji rebelled against the imperial court
Go-Daigo continued his fight against the Ashikaga but lost so badly
he was the last emperor to hold any real power in Japan until the mid-19th century
City Hunter will be released in a deluxe English-language omnibus edition containing the first three volumes of the original Japanese series
featuring all black-and-white original art and a stunning six-page full-color insert

with both set to be released in major bookstore and online retailers
Hojo serialized the manga in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump from February 26

The manga inspired several TV anime series, television films, anime films, a 1993 Hong Kong live-action film, a 2011 South Korean TV series, and a recent Japanese live-action Netflix film adaptation
Kana describes the main synopsis of the City Hunter manga as:
A stylish cocktail of hard-boiled action and raunchy comedy
manga classic City Hunter follows exceptional marksman and compassionate sleazeball Ryo Saeba as he sweeps corruption from the lavish 80s Tokyo nightlife
from the bodyguard of a beautiful madame to a vengefully hired assassination of a corrupt politician
readers follow the City Hunter through quick-wit thrills and smoldering dramas
The City Hunter Ryo Saeba takes on the dirty work of cleaning up Tokyo’s nightlife with his heart of gold worn on his sleeve
Cat’s Eye ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from September 14
A total of 18 tankobon volumes were released
The manga was later republished in deluxe aizoban
A remake of the original manga was published by Tokuma Shoten between 2010 to 2014
The manga inspired a 2-season TV anime series, a 1997 live-action Japanese film, a 2024 crossover ONA with Lupin the 3rd, and a 2024 French live-action remake TV series. A new ONA series from LIDEN FILMS will be streamed on Disney+ in September 2025
Kana describes the main synopsis of the Cat’s Eye manga as:
and Hitomi have high-risk lives outside of their day jobs
Hitomi especially needs to keep her secret under wraps
since she’s dating Toshio — the police officer assigned to catch the Cat’s Eye thief
Cat’s Eye’s targets are easy to spot: They’re all art pieces authored by acclaimed genius painter Heinz
What museums don’t know is that this artist is the missing father to the three “Cat’s Eye” siblings
As the sisters reclaim one piece after another
a conspiracy gradually begins to reveal itself
How can their father come out of hiding when the bloodthirsty syndicate that betrayed him to steal his work and fame — many of whom were once his closest apprentices and art collectors — are still so powerful in the art world
When Cat’s Eye tightropes another canvas out of a heavily guarded exhibit
the cops are pressed to apprehend the thief
Can the sisters discover the truth about their missing father
Or will they be apprehended by Hitomi’s star-crossed lover Toshio or killed by the looming syndicate responsible for the father’s disappearance

Father’s Day in the UK was on the 16th of June, so what better way to celebrate it than by discussing the absolute worst fathers in the Final Fantasy series? You may have seen my article on the Worst Mothers in Final Fantasy following the release of Final Fantasy XVI
we’ll have some spoilers ahead for several Final Fantasy games over the years
because heaven forbid his daughter be in a relationship with a bard
When Anna takes some arrows intended for Edward to save him
but not before hearing her father call her fiancé a spoony bard
Then he dedicates the rest of his time to revenge
and so Gau was left alone in the wilderness because Gau’s dad hated his son so much for apparently killing his wife
when Gau meets his father for the first time
but Gau is surprisingly chill and just glad that his father’s okay
we had Lucrecia on the list before for using her unborn child for an experiment
but let’s never forget the truly worst father of all time: Professor Hojo
you could say that Hojo is just an atrocious human being
of which Vincent Valentine is the leading member of his hate club
but Sephiroth wouldn’t even call Hojo his father
but the guy spent his son’s entire life using him as an experiment and saying his mother is Jenova
Sephiroth went a wee bit homicidally manic
but their relationship was pretty damn strained
and instead opts to join a freedom-fighting organisation against the exact government he works for
you have to wonder what went on behind the scenes and just how neglectful he was that his daughter doesn’t acknowledge him at all
if you ever hear that a character in Final Fantasy was created by someone through unnatural means
then it probably means there wasn’t anything good going on
Zidane was created by Garland to specifically destroy Gaia
Considering Garland is also an antagonist of Final Fantasy IX
you know that there’s no love lost between our hero and his birth father
It’s something that Tidus never lets anyone forget
so we knew he would have to be on the list
we all know that Jecht was secretly proud of his son
Maybe you should have told Tidus that when you were around
we won’t go into too much detail about Jecht since we all know what he was like
you know that’s not a good mix for a good relationship with your kids
he wasn’t a fan of his father’s insane plans and gave up his career as a Judge to roam the skies and change his name because that’s how much he started to hate his father
but considering the extent to which Balthier went to get away from him
Final Fantasy XV isn’t a game that’s rife with daddy issues
But good fathers are still hard to come by in Final Fantasy
Verstael is another mad scientist who made a clone of himself
he made Prompto as a clone to become a Magitek soldier for Niflheim
when Prompto got older after getting kidnapped away from him to live a normal life
Verstael was notably unimpressed that Prompto wasn’t a daemon
I originally wanted to choose that guy who has a “dog” that he pretends is attacking his son to kill bearers
Sylvestre Lestrage went so far as to kill Dion’s biological mother
to ensure no one knew that he wasn’t the Queen’s son
and if you’ve read my Worst Mothers in Final Fantasy article
it’s not Final Fantasy XVI without crippling depression
have I missed out any fathers who should’ve been on the list
Writing about all sorts like a liquorice allsort
Who to help and team up with during the fight on the beach in FF7 Rebirth
Choosing who to help on the beach in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will determine how the boss battle in Costa del Sol plays out
Helpfully, this boss battle on the beach will play in much the same way whoever you pick, with the only difference naturally being who you are fighting alongside, and which party members won't be in the fray with you thanks to Hojo's schemes putting them temporarily out of action in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
The main reason to choose either pairing depends entirely on who you want to bond with
Your relationship will change with the characters you choose to help
and the choice will contribute to your bond with them
The pair you don't select will also get taken temporarily by the boss
You'll be going up against the robotic Grasptropod
which has plenty of health to whittle down
so you could also factor in who you consider to be the better pairing for support in combat
who you choose to help on the beach is really all about which characters you want to develop your relationship with
which will feed in to your Gold Saucer date decision later in the game

If all the Boston University dorms were people
mysterious second cousin that everyone doesn’t quite trust
About a year ago when choosing a dorm for sophomore year
my roommate and I quickly realized we didn’t have any options other than Danielsen
and HoJo by the time our housing selection came around
We halfheartedly decided HoJo would probably be the best
even though it has kind of a strange vibe and mostly consists of triples
At least it felt like a step up from West without being more on Newbury Street than on campus (sorry
But we weren’t completely sure how it would turn out
A lot of people immediately dismiss it because of its “creepy” vibe and strange architecture/lack of windows
as someone that easily gets creeped out and hates windowless rooms
The windows let in more light than you’d think
and if you live on the top floor they’re a lot bigger
Although living in a triple is not for everyone
I actually found that the bunk bed setup with the desk below made the whole layout feel more private
but it still felt like more privacy than the Claflin double I was in last year
I’d be lying if I said HoJo was another Stuvi
But do you really want to spend almost twice the price to live twice as far from all your classes

We love the flamboyance of Joonhwan Lee (KOR)
the boundless energy of Frank De Wit (NED)
the explosiveness of Antonio Esposito (ITA)
the experience of Sagi Muki (ISR) and so many others
as well as some athletes we know less like this Japanese judoka
Only the luckiest still had a chance to get on the podium
Could Veda Albayrak (TUR) be the last survivor
We had to wait until the final to find out
Yoshito Hojo is almost unknown on the circuit and it was actually his first appearance in a grand prix
There are a lot of necessary questions raised in such a situation
would Hojo be able to deal with the experience of Albayrak
After a first part of the final that was kind of an observation
Yoshito Hojo went under the centre of gravity of his opponent and turned him over with a massive ura-nage for ippon
a technique that we would maybe have expected from Veda Albayrak himself
That's a masterful victory for Yoshito Hojo
who has had to treat a few injuries in recent months
It was only a slight slackening in the quarter-final that cost him the victory against Hojo
but we feel that little by little his reflexes are returning
This bodes well for the 2018 world champion
It was very interesting to watch two judoka with similar judo and kumi-kata
trying with every grip to find opportunities
A lot of power was involved and as they were both penalised twice during normal time
the golden score period promised to be crazy
more lactic acid invaded the arms and legs
after a sequence that could have gone either way
it was Saeid Mollaei who produced the effort to throw his opponent and drive him flat on his back; bronze for Mollaei
The second Japanese judoka in the category
Naoto Izawa (JPN) qualified to win the second bronze medal
Even though the Korean judoka was not as sharp as last year
With the season being long until the Games
he showed us again his best skills: waza-ari with seoi-nage and ippon with a ko-uchi-gari coming from afar

This should have been a warning for the number one seed because it was the Japanese judoka who won to reach the second final of his career at a World Judo Tour event
The Dushanbe contract is already fulfilled for Hojo who is gaining experience for the years to come
we can highlight the poor performance of Sharofiddin Boltaboev (UZB)
who in the second round did not find a solution against David Karapetyan (AIN) and lost on penalties
just before the neutral athlete was defeated by Hojo
who made his way through the elimination phases
he sent Mohamed Rebâti (QAT) back to the locker room via two waza-ari before the end of time
Then it was the turn of Tomas Morales (ARG) and Zaur Dvalashvili (GEO) before he ruined the final hopes of Timo Cavelius (GER) with a superb kata-guruma for ippon
The final started with a super strong kata-guruma attack from Borchashvili that was perfectly controlled by Hojo
the Japanese judoka was just waiting for his moment and it came during a sequence on the floor
Controlling perfectly the upper part of the body of his opponent
A first waza-ari was followed by a second to wrap up the contest and give him a second victory from only two World Judo Tour participations
Hojo is undefeated at the international level and this may well not stop in the near future
The first bronze medal was contested between Dimitri Gochilaidze (GEO) and Timo Cavelius (GER)
If the first part of the contest looked a little messy
he scored a waza-ari with a counter-attack as Cavelius probably thought that they were already on the floor
The second score was a massive o-soto-gari turned into an ashi-waza technique for an impressive ippon
The bronze medal was for Gochilaidze and Georgia
Adam Kopecky (CZE) and Abylaikhan Zhubanazar (KAZ) met
providing a chance for the number one seed to save his day
Zhubanazar was fast to score a first waza-ari with a change in direction and a kata-guruma conclusion
That should have been a strong warning for Kopecky but that was not enough as Zhubanazar applied exactly the same strategy and technique a little further into the contest to score a second waza-ari

Likely not a bustling home to more than 100 seniors
that’s the vision for The Grand at Twin Lakes
a newly opened independent living community in Palatine
The building was originally constructed in 1968 and has taken on many forms over the years
including as a hotel within the Howard Johnson family
Turning hotels into vibrant senior living communities is a trend noted back in 2014
Another relatively new developer in the senior living space
with a background in multifamily and student housing
also has seen the design value in adapting hotel buildings
recently opened a senior living community in Olathe
“The design of Olathe offered a lot of opportunities,” CA Senior Living Chief Operating Officer John Dempsey tells Senior Housing News
“The common areas supported the wellness concept.”
While the infrastructure of a hotel offers easy conversion
it’s harder to change the way people in the community view a well-known building
The Grand at Twin Lakes boasts 118 independent living units
many rooms were converted from single hotel rooms into one-bedroom independent living apartments
Remaining single hotel rooms were turned into studio apartments
a conversion that was fairly easy for designers
with most of the structural elements in place
The Palatine building was first designed by Chicago-based design firm Fitzgerald Architects Associates
and the firm was also tapped for the conversion project
the designers working on the project weren’t aware their firm was the original designer until the project got underway
“We went into the job not knowing that,” Rick Whitney
architect-in-charge of the project at Fitzgerald
says of the firm’s history with the building
It was really exciting to see that and the original design.”
While the project offered many advantages in its easy conversion to a permanent living space
overcoming the building’s history has proved to be an ongoing challenge
changing the image of the building within the Palatine area
where it had been a well-known hotel site for several decades
executive director at The Grand at Twin Lakes
People still come by to see if they can rent a room.”
One of the ways Mustardini has been working to change the community’s view of the space is by distributing flyers of the community’s grand opening to virtually all local businesses in Palatine to get the word out
she has invited neighbors who are 55 and older in the surrounding area to utilize parts of the community
Directly surrounding the community are several condo buildings with a dense senior population
and some neighbors have started to enjoy the community’s amenities
The proximity with these condos also demonstrates one of the lease-up challenges
though: The Grand at Twin Lakes is competing with numerous other living options in the area
including the multi-family condominiums in its backyard
The Grand is only 20% leased up with just eight residents fully moved in as of mid-October
But Mustardini is confident occupancy won’t be a long-term problem
What sets the Grand apart from its multifamily neighbors is its multiple dining rooms
fitness center and movie theatre—amenities that aren’t standard in apartment buildings or even age-restricted housing
“Part of why we liked what was built here is there is more common space than apartment buildings,” Whitney says
“This is so much more than apartment buildings
Ground-up buildings sometimes don’t have the space.”
designers were limited to the size of existing hotel rooms when converting them into studios and one-bedroom apartments
“The space limitations of a hotel room are a challenge
and the bathrooms are small,” Whitney says
the conversion process is relatively straightforward
and combining two rooms into one larger apartment is an easy process that can add more space by eliminating one entry door
The rooms at The Grand run from $2,600 per month for a studio to more than $3,500 per month for a one-bedroom apartment
The rent also includes two meals per day at the community
Attached to the building is also a space for four future retail shops
which may soon include a doctor’s office and a pharmacy
The retail spaces are still currently undergoing construction
Converting hotel spaces into senior living with higher levels of care
residents who want to age in place at The Grand can turn to the home health agency on site
The building also has a home heath care agency on site
and residents can age in place in their apartment all the way through hospice services if they choose
In addition to the potential benefits of having a doctor next door
the hotel’s design offered convenient accessibility for residents of a senior living community
As the community continues to fill and more residents move in
Mustardini hopes to keep the same intimacy the community currently has with its current group of residents
who continue to help shape the community as it completes its transition from hotel to home
“Every person who comes in has experiences and passions,” Mustardini says of the residents
“Their passions have not diminished with age
It’s not our job to run their life or their home
just help them live it through their passions.”

A vintage postcard (circa 1930-1945) shows the HoJo's on U.S
Howard Johnson's restaurants were the biggest chain in the country
Their iconic orange roofs were fixtures of the American highway, beckoning hungry motorists to come and dine at HoJo's, as they were affectionately called. The ultra-dapper Don Draper dines at one location in an episode of Mad Men. At one point, the chain even sold a line of frozen foods
Now, almost all of the restaurants are gone. One of the three last surviving Howard Johnson's eateries closed its doors yesterday in Lake Placid
The restaurant was going nuts Tuesday as locals crowded in to get a last taste of fried clams or the "wonderful world of 28 flavors" of ice cream that HoJo's ads once boasted
The Lake Placid HoJo's had been running since April 1956
It stayed strong even as the national brand faltered in the 1980s
He had been keeping the Lake Placid HoJo's alive with long hours and help from his sons
and we took care of business and this was our life," Butler says
Michael Butler works the counter on the final day of business for a restaurant that opened in 1956
Mike Butler started working in the kitchen when he was 5 years old
"I'd stand on the milk crates and butter the roll pans and get a quarter or something," he recalls
Lake Placid's Howard Johnson's was a place you could bring a hockey team or a big family on a budget
"It's a landmark — everyone has good memories," Politi says
"I remember coming to the Friday night fish fry with my parents many
The Butlers say they loved being part of the brand and part of this chapter of American life
they're ready to step away from the restaurant business
With the closure of this Howard Johnson's restaurant
there are just two of the eateries left in the whole country — one in Lake George

More commonly recognized for restoring aging structures
the Savannah College of Art and Design’s plan to demolish a former Howard Johnson’s motor lodge recently instigated a debate about what downtown buildings should be considered historic
“I was surprised,” said Historic Savannah Foundation president and CEO Daniel Carey
“If there is any institution within this community that could do something creative with the building
the Howard Johnson company built 29 motor lodges in Georgia
four of which shared the same “roadside” style design that drivers can see when entering downtown Savannah from the Talmadge Bridge exit onto Oglethorpe Avenue
The distinctive orange roofs are now a faded green
but the 54-year-old A-frame gatehouse and adjoining two-story motel guest wing owned by SCAD remain an intact example of the design type — as does the former HoJo restaurant now owned by a trolley company next door that retained the Howard Johnson’s rooftop hue
The other four identical locations in Georgia were either demolished or significantly altered
After leasing the property for about nine years
SCAD purchased the buildings in 2014 to be developed with the understanding the buildings were not historic and could be demolished
Associate Vice President Martin Smith recently told the Historic District Board of Review
The multi-year development project included the replacement of two dilapidated motel buildings nearby with state-of-the-art residence halls
“Student satisfaction at the Howard Johnson hotel is very low compared to our new properties
and operating student housing in this motel building has become in many ways counter to our mission in providing the finest facilities to students at SCAD,” he said
While not designated as contributing structures
the buildings are located in Savannah’s downtown Historic District and still have to go through a review process before they can be razed
To accomplish their development plan for the site
SCAD officials and their representatives recently sought approval from the historic review board to demolish the buildings
12 in favor of the request went against staff’s recommendation that the SCAD-owned buildings
along with the former restaurant next door
While buildings become eligible for historic designation when they are more than 50 years old
they must also meet other criteria before being granted such protected status
staff found that the buildings were also symbolic of Savannah’s postwar development and initiative for modernization
in addition to serving as well-preserved examples of mid-20th century modernist roadside architecture
Carey echoed that support for the buildings’ preservation and suggested prior to their vote that the board get an opinion from the state preservation officials before making a decision
“I think we have examples throughout town — Drayton Tower
Levy Jewelers — that I think bring attention to the evolution of our history
Two other mid-century buildings along the corridor — the Greyhound bus station across the street and the Thunderbird Inn next door — were designated historic in 2010
but SCAD’s representatives noted that the Howard Johnson's buildings were left off the map of contributing structures when it was updated at the time
The difference was that those buildings were unique
whereas the motor lodge was a standardized design that was constructed throughout the country and did not have much to do with Savannah
speaking at the review board meeting on behalf of SCAD
the buildings represented a suburban-style design that focused more on the automobile than the pedestrian experience
"We feel this is completely counterintuitive to what the Historic District represents and embodies a time when we were doing more bad than good to our urban fabric," he said
the university was required to document the structures by providing photographs and architectural drawings of the buildings that can be filed in the city archives
