Gran Turismo-backed Igor Fraga buoyed as Anest Iwata Racing teams up with Gainer after splitting with Arnage Racing…
Igor Fraga says Lexus SUPER GT squad Anest Iwata Racing feels like a “completely new team” this year following the end of its partnership with Arnage Racing
It was revealed last December that Anest Iwata and Arnage, which had jointly fielded a Lexus RC F GT3 in the GT300 class for the past two seasons, would go their separate ways as the former forged ahead with plans to create its own structure
Anest Iwata has teamed up with Gainer — which also fields a Nissan Z — to run the renumbered No
with Fraga staying on board for a third season at the team alongside new veteran teammate Hironobu Yasuda
Taking over as chief engineer is Norimitsu Yoshida
who is known for his work with the Dandelion Racing team in Super Formula
While the chassis is unchanged from the previous year
the engine and gearbox are new and the car itself has been refreshed ahead of this week’s opening round at Okayama
“The feeling of the car is better compared to last year,” Fraga told Sportscar365
“The team has changed quite drastically
so there are still some things we need to sort out
but we have more chance to show better performance this year
Compared to last year there are only two or three people inside the team who are the same
“We have great engineers and even the mechanics are top level
so it’s just about sorting out the operations to make sure we maximize the performance
“For me it’s also a good experience to pair up with Yasuda-san
because he has so much experience of SUPER GT itself and also the Yokohama tire as he was the development driver
So there are a lot of good inputs coming from his side.”
Although official testing has been impacted by bad weather
26 Lexus’s potential when he set a best time of 1:25.395 on the second day of a private test at Okayama
faster than the best time from the official test the same week
The Brazilian driver has set himself the goal of a first podium finish
having so far claimed a best finish of seventh in 2023 since joining SUPER GT
“It has to be better this year,” said Fraga
“It’s a super-difficult series
but the team is much more experienced this season and I believe we can deliver some good results
But the real goal for me is to be on the podium at least once.”
Masami Kunii, whose Super Licence organization co-runs the team, said that the decision to join forces with Gainer came about after it signed Yasuda, who used to race for the team until the end of 2023
“Anest Iwata has decided that it will make its own factory
but in the end it wasn’t ready in time for this season
we decided we would ask Gainer to help us with car maintenance this year,” explained Kunii
“Preparations on the factory are ongoing
and it should be ready by the end of the year.”
Kunii also expressed hopes of putting together a stronger season after a disappointing 2024 campaign that yielded no top-ten finishes
“Having Yasuda-san on the team has really helped deepen our understanding of the tires,” he said
“There’s a lot we still have to do
but it feels like we can fight now.”

Santiago was a significant underdog in Tokyo, Japan and overcame some tough early rounds to deservedly win on the scorecards by margins of 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112. The Puerto Rican improves to 14-4 (9 KOs).
The challenger tried to get his jab going early on, and explored options with occasional right hands, but there was more intent in Iwata’s shots. The champion was on the front foot, and he applied more pressure in the second when targeting the body and trying to cut the ring off to get Santiago to engage.
Santiago had success in spots with his overhand right, but it was not enough of a deterrent.
A left hook downstairs from Iwata caused Santiago’s knees to dip in the third round, but Santiago kept jabbing and moving, and he landed a screw shot in his bid to keep Iwata off him. He also took another solid looking left hook that Iwata leapt in to deliver before the end of the round. There was a sense that the pressure was building on Santiago in the fourth and fifth as his output dwindled.
Yet he defiantly responded in the sixth, crashing in a good right hand after a flurry of blows in what was his best round since the first. Santiago was on his toes in the seventh and looked more comfortable as Iwata marched forwards, landing little. The champion lunged and missed on occasion in the eighth, prompting loud cheers from Santiago’s corner.
Iwata, who scored three stoppage wins in his three outings in 2024, was finding it tough to pin Santiago down – with the challenger landing some flashy shots in the ninth – although Iwata broke through late in the round and forced Santiago to endure a spell of pressure.
The 29 year old, from Tokyo, kept coming and worked the head and body, and although Santiago, 32, motored around the ring, he still fired out shots and there was swelling beneath both of the champion’s eyes.
Santiago’s corner told him that Iwata was tiring in the 11th, and the champion took a flush right hand near the end of the session.
It seemed everything could have been on the line going into the 12th. Santiago’s team felt that they were three minutes from victory and Iwata came out fast. But Santiago was aggressive in bursts, and Iwata looked one-dimensional and took more punches as he swung desperately to retain his title.
There was a tense moment when the disconsolate Iwata had his hand raised by the referee Ben Rodriguez as the decision was announced, but he had done little more than accidentally raise the wrong arm; Santiago and his team could celebrate.

It’s a brand new type of product for Nintendo
but if there’s some itch in the back of your brain telling you you’ve seen this before
And the person that initially presented it to us was none other than the late
Iwata dropped the first hints of Nintendo’s brand new Quality of Life initiative
teasing the development of "non-wearable technology" focused on health that “is not necessarily something you will use in the living room."
In October of that same year, Iwata revealed Nintendo’s first Quality of Life product, which it intended to launch in 2016
The product was a non-wearable sleep sensor intended to be placed on a bedside table
Here’s a description of what Iwata had planned at the time: “Inside the QOL Sensor is a non-contact radio frequency sensor
which measures such things as the movements of your body
This automatically gathered data will be transmitted to the QOL cloud servers
which will then analyze the data measured by the sensor and visually represent sleep and fatigue results.”
It’s essentially exactly what Nintendo announced today with Alarmo
nearly exactly 10 years after Iwata originally shared the plans
It was only a few years later that Japanese news outlet Nikkei reported that Nintendo’s Quality of Life initiative had been entirely canceled
and one of the final remnants of Nintendo’s least successful generation quietly faded away
with a description that reads in part: “A Doppler sensor is included in the base device which detects biological information such as respiration and pulse
While today’s announcement trailer and Ask the Developer series make no mention of President Iwata or the decade-old launch of the Quality of Life initiative, connecting the dots makes it clear that this project is deeply intertwined with Iwata’s lasting legacy.

many things are years in the making and often early concepts derived from decades ago
They are quite visionary in concepts and often sit on ideas until the tech is available
GBA to Cube connectivity as one example was the start of the hybrid functionality with an attempt with the Wii U
perfected by the Switch but it's roots back in the Cube era
He was the one who pushed for the Wii to be able to pause immediately (something other programmers thought very difficult to reasonably do) and for the inclusion of a playtime message report
He cared about this because it allowed the Wii to be more accessible to everything and families
Iwata was always one of my biggest inspirations as a Nintendo figure when I was a kid
I remember being in Chicago on a trip when the news broke that he had passed
\"if there’s some itch in the back of your brain telling you you’ve seen this before\" That's exactly what I was feeling
Nintendo developers are so creative they continue to inspire from beyond the grave
And according to the survey it seems more people want Alarmo than PS5 Pro
and wondering what in the world they were talking about
Why not just an instruction booklet (or artwork) inside the Switch game case
a device to tell me I'm fatigued from lack of quality sleep as if I didn't know that
We have an interactive alarm clock from Nintendo before gta6
Nintendo expects me to pay $100 so that I can give them my nightime heartrate
Any Nintendo employees that want that info need to buy ME a $100 dinner first
Video Game News 2nd Apr 2025 / 5:28 pm Posted by Andy RobinsonLate Nintendo president Satoru Iwata rejected an early prototype of Switch 2’s magnetic Joy-Cons
according to one of the system’s producers
who claims that the hardware team refused to give up on the idea
rather than the rail system of the original Switch
but the magnets were not strong enough to convince him
“Originally when we were developing Switch
there was the idea to attach the Joy-Con controllers to the console with magnets,” he said
you’d be able to attach and detach the Joy-Con controllers right away
He added: “I took the prototypes to Iwata-san
the Joy-Con controllers would wobble when attached to the console using magnets due to the weak connection
“We decided to scrap the idea as we were concerned it would make customers uneasy about using the console
which allowed for a more stable attachment
But we always wished we could make it easier to attach and detach the controllers.”
The R&D team continued to research the magnets after the development of the original Switch
because it wasn’t “ready to give up on this idea”
“We needed the controllers to attach firmly to the console so that they don’t wobble,” Kawamoto said
we wanted it to be easy to detach and comfortable to attach even for children
“And so…we asked the Technology Development Department’s hardware team the impossible
(Laughs) But they went through a lot of trial and error
and we were finally able to attach it firmly and remove it easily with just a light press of the release button.”
Wednesday’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct also announced several new games, including a new Donkey Kong game. The Direct also confirmed what the mysterious C button will do.
Andy has worked in or around the games industry for 20 years across journalism and game development.

a specialist in multifunctional labels for the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors
will showcase several innovative solutions designed to enhance pharmaceutical packaging safety
Iwata Label USA will exhibit its containment and light protection solutions for vials
including Vial Protect Pack and Light Protect Pack
a tamper-evident safety label for syringes
The company’s Vial Protect Pack (VPP) series is designed to provide added protection for fragile or high-leverage glass vials
as well as outer surface contamination of cytotoxic medicine
the system delivers both reliable safeguarding and tamper evidence
The label’s adhesive securely bonds the plastic component to the primary container
eliminating any risk of unintended separation and enhancing protection throughout the supply chain
The VPP series is available in two configurations: Vial Protect Pack I (VPP I)
which features a bottom plastic plate attached to the vial with the Shrink Tack Label for enhanced protection
which essentially provides a “container for a container.” The solution combines a thick
tall plastic cup that cradles the primary vial with a shrink-tack label offering reliable tamper evidence
The plastic cup and the primary container are held in place with the label’s adhesive
eliminating any chance for their unintended separation
Both versions incorporate IL Group’s proprietary Shrink Tack Label
a heat-shrinkable PET film with pressure-sensitive adhesive for a secure bond and superior protection
IL Group also will showcase its Light Protect Pack
designed to maintain drug stability by blocking light with wavelengths as low as 380 nanometers (violet) and with (amber) material as low as 500 nanometers which are also available as part of the lineup
Unlike conventional light-protective solutions
the labeling solution can successfully shield light even for applications using clear glass vials
or syringes (both glass and plastic) allowing visual inspection during the reconstitution process while still providing long-range light protection
This ensures the stability of light-sensitive pharmaceuticals from packaging to administration
enhancing both product safety and usability
the company will showcase its Shrink Tack Label for tamper-evident sealing
a critical solution for securing syringe contents and preventing tip cap movement during shipping
and tamper evidence into a single streamlined process
Its easy-to-open seal enhances user convenience
irreversibly tamper-evident cap provides an additional layer of security
an optional UV-blocking feature increases stability
label colors can be customized for quicker
“We are excited to present our latest advancements in pharmaceutical labeling at INTERPHEX 2025,” said Eiji Funabashi
and tamper-evident solutions for syringes are designed to meet the highest industry standards
ensuring safety for healthcare personnel and patients
as well as regulatory compliance and operational efficiency for pharmaceutical manufacturers.”

Iwata was truly the person who understood me best."
Masahiro Sakurai is wrapping up his YouTube channel and has today released the final Grab Bag video: a touching tribute to former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata
Iwata sadly passed away in 2015 at the age of 55
He became the fourth president in the company's history in 2002
who worked with Iwata at Nintendo's HAL Laboratory
has shared multiple memories of working with Iwata in this latest video
he'd always have the most carefree smile on his face," said Sakurai
reminiscing about his first job interview with Iwata
he never told me how I should approach the content of my games
I think he trusted me to handle those decisions how I saw fit."
Iwata contributed prominently to Sakurai's Smash Bros
providing code for the initial N64 prototype (the only time he wrote code for one of Sakurai's games) known as Dragon King: The Fighting Game
he really enjoyed his time working on it," said Sakurai
Iwata also had a hand in the Super Smash Bros
even though the characters weren't brothers at all
using the word added the nuance that they weren't simply fighting - they were friends who were settling a little disagreement."
Later, Iwata contributed towards bug fixes for GameCube game Super Smash Bros. Melee
Melee would have released before the end of 2001," said Sakurai
He continued: "Of all the people I've known personally
but I felt that he used logic rather than instinct to figure out the best way to proceed
"He was more than simply a programmer - he was a learner
and someone who thought often about psychological topics
Iwata was truly the person who understood me best
Sakurai launched his YouTube channel in August 2022 and has since uploaded 268 videos covering all facets of game design
Perhaps most insightful have been his comments on the Smash Bros. series he's best known for. He detailed, for instance, how all fighters have an almost equal chance of winning and, in a later video, jokingly apologised to fans who have played the game for thousands of hours

Anest Iwata set to race on next year under its own banner as team weighs up whether to keep Lexus RC F GT3…
Arnage Racing has announced it will no longer participate in SUPER GT under its own name following the end of its association with Anest Iwata Racing
Mie Prefecture-based Arnage has run a Lexus RC F GT3 under the ‘Anest Iwata Racing by Arnage’ banner in deference to its partnership with Anest Iwata
a Yokohama-based heavy manufacturing company
the tie-up came to an end following last weekend’s Suzuka finale
with Anest Iwata now poised to continue racing under its own banner instead
Arnage owner Munetake Ito wrote on social media: “As of the end of the 2024 season
Arnage Racing’s participation [in SUPER GT] as a team has ended
“We are very grateful to the fans that supported us
And to the many people that have helped us
I’d like to express my sincerest gratitude.”
Arnage successfully took the first step towards the second phase.”
who is the boss of the Super Licence organization that assists with running the Anest Iwata effort
confirmed to Sportscar365 that the team will continue to be on the grid next year
The team has struggled for performance with the RC F GT3
believed to be an ex-Emil Frey Racing chassis
scoring a best finish of seventh last year at Sugo with drivers Igor Fraga and Yuga Furutani
Kunii stated that continuing with the Lexus remains a strong possibility
It’s understood that Gran Turismo-backed Fraga is expected to stay with the team for a third season
but Furutani is poised to exit in favor of a new Japanese signing
Arnage has been a permanent fixture of the GT300 grid since 2013
when it first entered the championship in its own right with an Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3
Since then it has run a variety of different cars
the Ferrari 488 GT3 (in partnership with Inging)
Arnage also runs a Mercedes-AMG GT3 on behalf of R’Qs Motor Sports
and it’s unclear whether the split with Anest Iwata will have any impact on this program
Editor’s note: This interview was conducted on April 3, 2025, prior to Nintendo’s announcement about delaying Switch 2 pre-orders in the United States due to the potential impact of tariffs. Parts of this interview were edited for clarity.
IGN: Can you talk about the SOC system on a chip the Nintendo Switch 2 was running? Is it Nvidia Tegra? If not, can you reveal which graphics architecture it's based on?
Nintendo: I think you'll find a lot of the details in NVIDIA's information that they've shared.
IGN: One of the notes in the direct suggested to hit 4K in dock mode, upscaling may be required. What kind of upscaling is this system using? Is it using AI upscaling?
Nintendo: I think probably the main kind of easiest upscaling to use is the DLSS that Nvidia provides. So from that standpoint, I guess you could say this AI.
Nintendo: That said, we're planning on providing other options of upscaling through software and so ranging from something that uses AI to something that's not. I think you'll see that as time passes. And lastly, I'll add that even though there is upscaling, there's also the option to not upscale and just output natively. So that's also an option that developers can use.
IGN: What about ray tracing? Is that something that your team experimented with?
that's when we're kind of making the graphics of a game
We consider ray tracing as just another tool to do that – it's not that we're going to try to use ray tracing on everything
but really trying to figure out what types of graphics
what types of situations are best suited for ray tracing
That's the approach we took when we did all of our researching and experimenting
IGN: We saw that the switch two supports third party cameras
Nintendo: [Laughs] It really depends on the game software with the structure
So if that software supports third-party USB mice
She took my Switch and I don't get to play it anymore
She also has dropped it a lot and it's okay
What have you done with Switch 2 to make sure that it can survive a kid dropping it on the floor or dropping it down the stairs
Nintendo: Nintendo has made very sturdy devices through the ages and I believe that this time around as well
IGN: I also have a Steam Deck and I like it
but the fan gets very loud when I'm playing high end games
What did Nintendo do to make sure that that was taken into account when designing the hardware for Switch 2
Nintendo: When a fan is loud it really does affect one's gameplay
so that is definitely something we had in the back of our mind during the development of the Nintendo Switch 2
The system is made to adapt depending on the processing capability so I'm kind of curious to hear from the others here what their experience has been like
Nintendo: When I was playing it it's not like
It hasn’t really gotten to the point where
Nintendo: The hardware team put quite a lot of effort into making sure the airflow was smooth
So a lot is coming in but there's a lot coming out
and as such the fan noise isn't too significant
IGN: Nintendo invented the directional pad and it's been important for video games for my entire life
What did your team do to ensure that the Dpad on the Switch 2 was great for fighting games
Nintendo: You may think that every time you see the directional pad that it's just the same button being reused
but the truth is we do make small adjustments and add small changes every time
I have people – our development and game development teams – try them out when we make a new one
Nintendo: This is a more detailed point but for the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller directional buttons
we made it so that it's even more difficult to have mistaken input
it doesn't completely eliminate that possibility but it should reduce it
IGN: I'm a big fan of Nintendo handheld systems and always have been since the original Game Boy
What are each of your personal favorite classic Nintendo handhelds
Nintendo: I have fond memories for each of the systems that have come out but for me personally
I think the original Game Boy really has a special place in my heart
Part of the reason for that is that since then there's obviously new systems that came out
But I just distinctly remember my mother with the original Game Boy playing Tetris
IGN: Some of you worked with the legendary Satoru Iwata
Is there any specific part of his legacy that inspired the Nintendo Switch 2 design
Nintendo: There are various aspects but what comes to mind first is the magnet connector
We originally didn't adopt it for the Nintendo Switch because it wasn't as secure as we would've liked
we put a lot of effort into this aspect and that has come to fruition
Iwata's concerns about the magnets that meant it didn't come to fruition [for the original Switch]
So being able to actually address all of the issues and create something that probably would've met his standards is moving and meaningful
I think I took the JoyCon on and off 20 times yesterday
Nintendo: I actually have a question for you
You saw the footage of the JoyCon 2 snapping on and off
Was the impression you got from that footage different from actually snapping it on and off
I thought it was going to be like a refrigerator magnet and it was going to be wobbly loose and instead it just goes ‘snap’ and clicks in

The man behind some of the Switch's best music tracks
has announced that he has left his role at Nintendo
The composer took to Twitter to share that he actually stepped back from the position in July 2023
though this is the first time he has publicly acknowledged it
Iwata expressed his "heartfelt gratitude" to everyone who has supported his work
He also confirmed that he has been working on several other projects over the past year
which he hopes to share "in the near future"
You'll find Yasuaki Iwata's full message and original tweet below:
As specified in the above message, this isn't the end of Iwata's work, though there's no guarantee that we'll hear the tracks on a Nintendo system. Nintendo Music may still be missing its composer credits
but we're off to blast the New Horizons theme for the rest of the day
What's your favourite Yasuaki Iwata soundtrack
[source x.com]
despite his insistence that The Minish Cap is the best Zelda game and his unwavering love for the Star Wars prequels (yes
he has continued to write news and features on the site ever since
the music he helped create for us to enjoy was so beautiful
I wish him the best in whatever direction he takes
it is interesting to imagine hearing his talents in other media
His contributions are very much appreciated
Hopefully he founds success with whichever projects he is currently working on
His music was very fresh and no doubt helped craft a newer musical identify for Nintendo so this feels like a big loss
build up a solid portfolio and then strike out on your own as a freelancer
And there's no reason he can't work for Nintendo again
Yasunori Mitsuda left Square then turned right back around to freelance the Chrono Cross soundtrack
You could say he’s seeking New Horizons then
wish him the best in whatever new projects he's been working on
One of the contemporary greats alongside Atsuko Asahi in my books
@batmanbud2 YES!
Your departure will leave some Tears on the Kingdom (yeah
I admit I was not a fan of BotW OST at first
I can say the music is as iconic as Koji Kondo's work
Yasuaki Iwata's contributions are very much appreciated and I wish him the best with his current and future projects.👍
Thank you so much for the incredible music
Listing Botw and animal crossing doesn't mean much to me but arms and Mario 3d world pops jingles in my head
Did he do the bag expansion dancing tree song
Wonder why this news is so delayed?Fingers crossed he will continue to partner with Nintendo as a freelancer like so many other legends
Losing a deeply-talented artist is sad news for Nintendo
I hope Iwata-san finds success and a worthy creative outlet elsewhere
This reminds me of years ago when I read here that the Yoshi's Wooly World composer had left Nintendo
Thank you Iwata-San for all the great tracks
I wish you the best in your future projects
Thank you Yasuaki Iwata for everything you've done for Nintendo! You have created some of the most amazing video game music of all time no doubt about that
His work on the BOTW soundtrack was very underrated
I’ll definitely look forward to anything he works on now he’s gone freelance
Hold on there, you need to login to post a comment..

"Video games are meant to be just one thing: fun
marks the late Satoru Iwata's 65th birthday
who held the position from May 2002 until his passing in July 2015
touched the hearts of many while he was the head of the company
Iwata rose through Nintendo after first working at HAL Laboratory
working as a part-time programmer in 1980 before becoming a coordinator of software production in 1983
he helped build a relationship with Nintendo and went on to become HAL's president in 1993
In the following six years, he turned around the studio's debts and even helped Nintendo on the side, helping out on Pokémon Gold & Silver, Pokémon Stadium, and Super Smash Bros. He joined Nintendo officially in 2000
before taking over as president in 2002 after Hiroshi Yamauchi retired
fans have been celebrating the beloved ex-President's birthday
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata skipped Japan's DS launch day events -- instead
he traveled to Tohoku University to meet with famed neuroscientist Dr
Ryuta Kawashima and pitch to him the game that would become "Brain Age." A legendary meeting of the minds
Today we honor what should have been Satoru Iwata's 65th birthday
The programmer and game designer rose to take the top spot at Nintendo in 2002 where he remained until his death in 2015
Earlier this year, Smash creator Masahiro Sakurai shared a video celebrating his friendship with the late Iwata
sharing his memories of working with the man himself
and you will never be forgotten by the millions who love you
Share your favourite Iwata moments with us in the comments
Alana has been with Nintendo Life since 2022
She enjoys nothing more than overthinking battle strategies
but definitely not forgotten by so many me included - thank you for everything Iwata-san
The world in general needs more of his spirit
9 years have come and gone and it still hurts
He was so a good man.He was everything for Nintendo and worked very hard did many things for Nintendo. How he was talking in Nintendo Direct presentations was so awesome and he did the presentation unboxing the Nintendo Wii U
He reminded me a bit of my high school computing/IPT teacher (God rest his soul) who truly understood me like so few (if anyone) ever had
and he'd occasionally pull my ear when I was naughty
I wish I could have had a chance to give Iwata-san a hug too
time to roll up into a ball and cry like a sad bitch again
he's the only big boss of Nintendo that makes the Nintendo Direct fun to watch
People like Iwata seem to come around only once every so often
He deserved to have seen the Switch's success and to have worked on its successor
to have shown his humor in so many more Nintendo Directs
he deserved to have had so many more years to just enjoy life
wish you were still on this planet to celebrate it
Poor guy had a bile duct infection and they tried saving him but it just wasn't enough
He contributed to many of my favorite games
Wish he was around to see the switch he would have loved it
I think about Iwata pretty much every time I fire up a game
For those who misses Satoru Iwata I have three recommendations:
I would love to watch a Muppets TV-series based on Nintendo history and headquarters
(Both set in the real world and game world.)
Same age as my mom who also passed from cancer not long after he did
And next year will mark ten years since his passing.sniff😞😭
@Coolmusic Wow 10 years
I feel like whistler from those blade movies
@Lofoten I am glad you mentioned the book Iwata Asks
I bought and read it: he truly was an amazing person
I know the kind of the whole point of the Nintendo Directs was so Nintendo could stage manage every facet of their own appearance to the public
but Satoru never seemed like anything less than absolutely genuine in his humanity whenever he was on
Every time I watch that tribute video on YouTube my eyes get all watery
This man has touched the lives of many and his legacy continues to live on
He had a great way of managing the company and valued each member of his teams
He is sorely missed and it was probably my favourite era of Nintendo
with all the whacky Nintendo Directs and Reggie on the other side of the pond
I'll never forget that no matter where I go or what I do
Every day is a painful reminder that I'll never get the chance to meet my hero..
I highly encourage everyone to buy thr "Ask Iwata" book if you haven't already
I'm not an avid reader at all (despite how much I write)
I have a picture of him hanging next to my desk in my office
He was such an inspiration and his work ethic was impeccable
Anytime I feel stuck or discouraged his picture is there to remind me to try my best at everything I do and to do it with pride and a smile
Too bad he hasn’t been able to see the switch go absolutely bonkers

Salvatore Schillaci, a prolific scorer in the J.League's early years and the Golden Boot Award recipient at the 1990 FIFA World Cup
known by his popular nickname "Toto," began his professional career at Messina in 1982 and later played for Serie A heavyweights Juventus and Inter Milan before joining Jubilo Iwata in 1994
Schillaci played his final game for the J.League club in 1997
Numerous tributes to Schillaci were posted on the internet and by media outlets spanning the globe
described Schillaci on its website as Italy's "unlikely" hero at the 1990 World Cup
his success and persona at the 1990 World Cup were eloquently described
fiery eyes and face full of determination and emotion as he turned away to celebrate yet another goal
is remembered as one of the tournament's most enduring images."
"Schillaci had an innate goalscoring instinct and a strong desire to reach the top
Although he was not the tallest or most physically imposing player
he more than made up for this with his speed
Schillaci finished the 1990 World Cup as the top overall scorer with six goals
He also claimed the Golden Ball Award as the tournament's top player
Former Jubilo teammate Masashi Nakayama said he was saddened by the news of Schillaci's death
"I only have a sense of frustration after my partner's departure came too early," said Nakayama, now the manager of J.League third-division club Azul Claro Numazu
Schillaci made a lasting impression on Nakayama
is etched firmly within me still," Nakayama said
Schillaci appeared in the Serie A for the first time in 1989 following a 23-goal effort in the previous season for Messina in the Italian second division.
With greater exposure in Serie A playing in front of bigger crowds in larger stadiums
"We immediately fell in love with Toto," Juventus said in a statement
who retired in Palermo after his playing days and established a youth soccer academy in his hometown
captured the essence of his beloved place in the sport
The 173-centimeter's athleticism and endearing personality made him a fan favorite in his homeland and a sizable following in J.League venues across Japan
In a 2014 interview
Schillaci explained how he approached the game
responding to a question from Chris Hunt of fourfourtwo.com
The inquiry centered on what it meant to him to be named a starter for the first time in the World Cup ― Italy's third match of the 1990 tournament
"I characteristically never take anything for granted
each game is a lottery," Schillaci said in the interview
"When the match is over I treasure the moments of the day
That is my strength and that allows me to go forward."
Schillaci was a captivating performer on the pitch
And decades after his final game in his homeland
Serie A President Lorenzo Casini eloquently summed up Salvatore Schillaci's special place in the annals of soccer in Italy and beyond
"He was a champion who lit up the 'magic nights' of Italia 90," Casini said in a statement
"His desire to reach the top levels in soccer has been and will remain a source of inspiration for so many youngsters pursuing their dream of playing in Serie A."

Not sure who has the biggest inflated ego, this guy or Kojima.
and one mean senior colleague in particular
Super Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai has praised late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's role in not only bringing the iconic fighting series to life
Sakurai is asked how meeting Iwata for a job interview at HAL Laboratory affected his work
Sakurai says he might not have joined HAL if not for Iwata
and had the Nintendo icon not made the prototype for Smash Bros
it may not have been released to the world at all
Sakurai also says the series "might have died out" had Iwata not asked him to make Super Smash Bros
"there's no doubt that he influenced me in many ways." The influence Sakurai speaks of
is more about the direction of his career than his craft – that he did on his own
Sakurai recalls a senior colleague being mean to him when he first joined the company
After asking the difference between a proposal and a specification
Sakurai then knew going the self-taught route was probably for the best
Sakurai might have been largely self-taught
but that doesn't mean you shouldn't learn from the greats

the composer of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's OST
Yasuaki Iwata has made a belated announcement about his departure from Nintendo
According to a post on his personal X account from November 5
the composer left his position at Nintendo back in July last year.
Iwata has written and co-written music for Nintendo titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Mario Kart 8 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
the artist expressed gratitude to fans and mentioned that he is already working on new projects
which he hopes to make public in the near future.
Iwata’s original statement is as follows:
I have a bit of a belated announcement to share
I took a step in a new direction by leaving my position at Nintendo
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported me over the years
and to everyone who listened to the music through the projects I was a part of
I’ve been working on new projects since my departure
and I hope to have the opportunity to share some of these with you in the near future
If there are those who would like to continue following my journey
and I hope you look forward to what’s to come
Thank you very much for your continued support!

who served as Nintendo president from 2002 until his death in 2015
"It wouldn't be right to end this channel without touching on this topic," Sakurai wrote on X/Twitter
who opened the channel to talk about his experiences developing games
worked with Iwata at HAL Laboratory before the latter moved to Nintendo in 2000 as the head of corporate planning
Sakurai shares several touching memories over the course of the 10 minute video
how Iwata helped come up with the title of Super Smash Bros.
While Iwata's management role typically kept him far away from development
he nevertheless played a key role in Smash Bros
Melee's development by contributing his expertise as a programmer and solving numerous bugs
Sakurai also remembers how Iwata came up with the "brothers" part of Super Smash Bros.
which was meant to convey that the characters weren't actually fighting
Sakurai goes on to recall his shock at Iwata succeeding Hiroshi Yamauchi as Nintendo president
calling it "frankly unimaginable" that a comparative outsider should take over what had been a family-owned business for generations after just two years with the company
Iwata proved to be a major force at Nintendo
contributing numerous ideas such as the Iwata Asks series
Sakurai finishes by remembering their final drive together, and how they had planned to meet again later that year before Iwata suddenly passed away in July
Iwata was truly the person who understood me best," Sakurai said
I'd probably be off doing something completely different."
Sakurai's tribute to Iwata is one of his final videos as he winds down his YouTube channel, which started in 2022 and has 589,000 subscribers. He says that he continues to make games for the time being, but his next project is currently unknown.
Kat Bailey is IGN's News Director as well as co-host of Nintendo Voice Chat. Have a tip? Send her a DM at @the_katbot.
The final moment between Sakurai and Iwata is really touching. You never really know whether or not you would see your friend again, so enjoy the time you have together.
It's a shame Iwata never saw the success of the Switch after the Wii U failed to take off. You did good Mr. Iwata.
The reason it's called Super Smash \"Brothers\" is because they're actually just friends solving a little disagreement?

Two years into being Nintendo's global president
Iwata looks ahead to the company's strategy with the Nintendo Wii and DS
A new interview featuring the late Satoru Iwata has been uncovered
His comments in the video feel important in the years since his passing and downright prescient amid current industry turmoil
Dating back to E3 2004
the interview from Kikizo has been fully remastered with Japanese and English subtitles
Iwata had only been global president of Nintendo for two years
Iwata was asked about the then-upcoming Nintendo DS
the handheld needed to feel like something audiences had never experienced before
"The DS can tell you how serious we are about changing the way games are played," said Iwata
"If we said we beefed up the technology of the Game Boy Advance
and the processing power and graphic capabilities
that's something people are expecting
Iwata expressed a belief that the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 wouldn't have much of a future
he noted that if the two consoles did have a bright future ahead
the Nintendo Wii (née Revolution) would go down a similar path
Sony and Microsoft's more recent consoles have largely been sold in terms of graphical and technical power
that focus just results in more work than needed
and is ultimately worthless since audiences may not see a clear difference
Though he passed away in 2015, Iwata's words feel especially resonant now. Last week, Sony revealed half of PlayStation Network's install base are still using their PlayStation 4s
There's a lot of reasons for that, like the pandemic eating into the momentum of the current generation. The PS5's still being aroundn $500, and much of the current games being cross-gen titles
"Without a completely new UI or way to play," he said
"I don't think the majority of customers will want to buy a new hardware just to play games."
Iwata viewed the DS as an expansion of the Game Boy family of handhelds
and the GBA had a then-install base of 60 million units
Nintendo's handhelds were (and still are) iconic
which made Sony's PlayStation Portable look like an underdog
he's very intentional with calling the DS its own thing that'll spawn its own devoted base
as the DS spawned a redesign and the equally big 3DS as a successor
Iwata noted Sony had a "tough" challenge of going up against both the DS and GBA base
since it didn't exist at that point as a Game Boy replacement
Not all of Nintendo's hardware bets paid off. The Nintendo WiiU had a rough finanacial go of it, and it fell to the 3DS to pick up the slack. But the Nintendo Switch in 2017 turned things around extremely well, and recently topped 140 million lifetime sales
And as the console is looking like Nintendo's best-selling system ever
anticpation for its successor builds each day

creator Masahiro Sakurai recently revealed that the planned and scripted all of the videos for his YouTube channel in one month
and Kirby series creator Masahiro Sakurai just revealed that all of the video lessons on his extensive Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games YouTube channel were written and recorded two and a half years ago.
Sakurai first launched his channel dedicated to teaching game development know-how in 2022
The creator explains that after finishing work on Super Smash Bros
he had six months of “free time” until April 2022
when development of his next (still unannounced) game would begin
he decided to use this time to prepare the content for his channel.
as revealed in the final episode on Sakurai’s channel
virtually all of the content on it – meaning 256 videos worth of lessons
were planned and scripted by Sakurai in the span of a single month
Filming and editing followed suit in the subsequent months
Sakurai also revealed that although it cost him around 90 million yen (approx
he has not received any income from all the channel as he decided not to monetize it
he sees it as an “investment towards the brighter future of games.”
and the fact that we’ve been watching a Sakurai from the past this whole time
the developer has displayed an astonishing amount of dedication and foresight in running the YouTube channel in this way.
But almost 20 years ago, Nintendo’s late CEO Satoru Iwata talked about these qualities of Sakurai’s. In the Super Smash Bros. Brawl edition of Nintendo’s “Iwata Asks” series
you are capable of taking a project with nothing and visualizing a completed game almost perfectly in your head.” He went on to comment that on their joint projects at HAL Laboratory
Sakurai was able to “point out the smallest details even when the product had yet to take shape.”
These details were apparently “so small and so specific” that Iwata initially doubted Sakurai’s insights
things would always turn out exactly the way he described once development progressed
but you’re able to visualize a game right down to its very details
as if the finished game is working inside your mind
how else could you have been right so many times
you especially can readily form an image of how a game will look when finished.” Although Iwata was talking about games specifically in this discussion
the qualities he highlighted sound extremely familiar in the light of the newly revealed origin story behind Sakurai’s YouTube channel
Sakurai’s upcoming game has been in development for two and a half years and should be receiving an official announcement “sooner or later,” according to the creator.
It’s always nice to hear when developers care for one another and properly give them the respect they deserve
Masahiro Sakurai has never been shy about doing that and has honored all sorts of developers
and even gamers during his time in the industry
His YouTube series alone proved that where he talked about the unique ways that games have been made and the clever tricks that some use to make their games stand out
you could argue that the person he holds in reverence the most is the late Satoru Iwata
Recently, Masahiro Sakurai was doing an interview, and in it, he not only praised Satoru Iwata, but said that without him, Super Smash Bros. wouldn’t be the franchise that it is right now
especially because of the key moments that Iwata helped make happen that kept pushing the series forward
Masahiro Sakurai says without the late Satoru Iwata we might not have Super Smash Bros
"First of all, if it weren't for Mr. Iwata, I might not have joined HAL Laboratory, and if Mr. Iwata hadn't made the prototype for Smash Bros., Smash Bros. might not have been released… pic.twitter.com/uKeDAH9yQJ
— Genki✨ (@Genki_JPN) March 3, 2025
When you think about those moments and others that Sakurai touched on in his YouTube series
Iwata was indeed one of the “key players” in Smash Bros becoming the best-selling fighting game franchise of all time
He’s owned every Nintendo handheld and every console since the SNES
He's got a degree in video game development
is a published comic book writer and an author of several novels
Former Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aimé says he's "incredibly touched" by the possibility of a Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom easter egg that may reference his friendship with late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata
appears to reference Fils-Aimé and Iwata with two Zora characters named Inawa and Rogma
Inawa supports the leader of the river Zora
But it was still enough to prompt Fils-Aimé to express his gratitude on X/Twitter
"If the developers did indeed reference the friendship between Mr
Star Fox Zero was dedicated to Iwata as a "wingman who fell in battle."
Kat Bailey is IGN's News Director as well as co-host of Nintendo Voice Chat
Here we get a bit of a story about how a legend influenced a then up and coming legend
Iwata had a great deal of influence on Sakurai in both direct and indirect ways
including offering a key bit of wisdom when it came to coming up with the name of the Super Smash Bros
Sakurai paints a picture of a hard-working
young developer hoping to prove himself with noteworthy contributions to his company
Meanwhile Iwata is the always-busy manager who is juggling responsibilities as he leads multiple teams through multiple projects
Iwata took some precious time to devote some direct attention to a new Nintendo fighting game that was in development
and was especially enthralled as he had a particularly good time testing and working on it
Iwata was invested enough to add his voice to the group tossing around ideas
and promoted the concept of adding "brothers" to the title
and promoting a sense of playful rivalry as opposed to bad-blood violence was important
You can hear all about this episode along with a handful of others
including an emotional final meeting between Sakurai and Iwata
Time flies as the original Super Smash Bros. came out a full quarter century ago, and now the young up and comer from these stories has an immensely successful franchise and is semi-retired

who served as Nintendo's president from 2002 to 2015
notably didn't do many interviews outside of Nintendo's own press releases
a previously unpublished interview with him has resurfaced
the interview has now been remastered and translated into English with subtitles
Satoru Iwata had just taken over as Nintendo's president two years prior
and the company had revealed the DS a few months earlier
Iwata discusses the company's current generation of consoles in the interview
explaining its selection of DS demos for the show and the handheld's status as a competitor for Sony's PSP
While the Wii wasn't formally revealed until two years later
Iwata teases it as an exciting predecessor for the GameCube
"Just as Nintendo surprised people with the DS
if we were to create new hardware after the GameCube
I believe there's no point in making it unless it's something that will surprise people."
He also discusses working with former president Hiroshi Yamauchi and representative director Shigeru Miyamoto
"Hiroshi Yamauchi has led Nintendo for over 50 years
he is someone who can be called the father of today's gaming industry," he said
For more on Iwata's impact on the industry, you can read 11 of his most memorable quotes. You can also learn about his book, Ask Iwata: Words of Wisdom from Satoru Iwata
I wish all leaders were as gracious, intelligent and innovative as Iwata was. Phil will never get up to that level of respectability.
While the Wii wasn't formally revealed until two years later, Iwata teases it as an exciting predecessor for the GameCube
*scratches head *: Is the article claiming he teased the Wii as an exciting system that came out before the GameCube?
Thanks for sharing, IGN. A quote from the video I like:
\"I want you to know Nintendo is working on our next system and that system will create a gaming revolution. I suppose I could give you a list of our technical specs, I believe you'd like that, but I won't for a simple reason. They really don't matter.\"
Nintendo just wants to make fun games and their stance is still the same all these years later. Wouldn't mind some DLSS support next-gen though!
it's hard to believe it will be 10 years next year since the industry lost a legend in him :(
Not to speak ill of the dead, what do you except from the boss of a company other than \"Yea, yea, you all should buy our new products. I promise they would be worth your money and while.\"
Ah, the DS Fat, what an oddly designed system. I’m proud to say that there is a Iwata Mii in my 3DS plaza🥰
