More: Popular Springfield restaurant closing for good; The Railyard announces opening date
My order: This recently opened Japanese-themed restaurant offers sushi
My husband and I ordered the lunch specials
which offered a selection of one “rotary plate” off the conveyor belt and a choice of protein and rice or noodles
I opted for Shrimp Izumi Fried Rice ($11.95.) He ordered the Chicken Hibachi Noodle ($11.95)
We split an order of Veggie Spring Rolls ($3.59)
were Mango Paradise Roll and Cilantro Salmon Roll
Likes: Friendly servers are quick to help with the ordering process
The conveyor belt parades a variety of appetizers and desserts by each table
making it easy to choose the rotary plate that came as part of the meal
The entrees arrived piping hot delivered by a robot train above the conveyor belt that stops at the table and announces the order
interactive atmosphere and unique dining experience
For me it was a high-tech spin on memories of a diner in my hometown that delivered meals on a little train that went around the restaurant
Dislikes: Reaching up to retrieve the meals on the robot train were a bit of a stretch for both of us
but thankfully our server was able to assist
I think I’d enjoy sampling a few of the rotary plates ($2.59-3.59 each)
or the Hibachi Combination Bowl entrée with chicken
steak and shrimp with yum-yum sauce ($11.95)

and Hasset at the Mathias Student Research Conference
At American University, undergraduate students are making real contributions to one of the world’s most pressing health challenges: HIV. In the Izumi Lab, housed in the Department of Biology, students work under the guidance of Professor Taisuke Izumi on cutting-edge research aimed at curing HIV and improving the lives of those who live with it
With projects spanning from immune system activation to novel drug evaluation tools
the lab is a training ground for the next generation of scientists
and Dacia have demonstrated exceptional commitment
“Their contributions have significantly advanced our research on HIV biology and serve as inspiring examples of undergraduate excellence in the sciences at American University.”
We sat down with the three students to talk about their work
Dacia Marquez presenting at the Mathias Student Research Conference
Dacia: My passion for medical biology stems from my lifelong experience navigating chronic illness
requiring constant infusion treatments and lifelong medications
I have continuously sought to understand the mechanisms behind my treatments and
why cures for chronic immune diseases remain unknown
why I expose myself to as many immunology opportunities as I can
Hassett: When I was first exposed to biology
I was very interested in how our bodies work
Both chemistry and biology courses helped answer these questions
which encouraged me to major in biochemistry
I was able to learn more about what was happening on the molecular level
so I’ve loved science ever since I was a kid
was watching the 1997 movie GATTACA in my AP Biology class
Learning more about the underlying mechanisms that make everyone so unique is what my passion for biology is rooted in
and the questions that GATTACA had me thinking about inspired me to pursue a career in biology specifically
Dacia: I think our HIV research will make a real-world impact in the future because it focuses on the one key factor of why HIV has no cure and why combined retroviral therapy (cART) is a long-term treatment
I want people to know we are one step closer to developing an effective HIV cure due to Latency Reversal Agents efficacy
I hope this research provides an alternative function cure strategy for the treatment of HIV
As the utilized inhibitors have already been approved by the FDA for use in cancer treatments
I hope these steps towards the creation of an HIV cure can reduce stigmas often associated with HIV
Grace: I hope that the system I am assisting in developing will allow for better health outcomes for those living with HIV
there is still a lot of stigma against the LGBTQIA+ community that comes with hearing “HIV.” As someone who belongs to this community
I hope that my work will contribute towards eliminating harmful stereotypes by continuing to raise awareness for HIV as a global public health challenge that we should strive to develop effective treatments for
Grace: Lots of late nights and early mornings
but going that extra mile is worth it when you see that your results can have a significant impact on the research community
I also received the CAS Fellowship last summer
so I was able to really dive deep into my research and gain a more comprehensive understanding as to the implications of my work
Dacia: I would have to say our lab is very hard working
we wouldn't be in the positions we are in today
Our publications are our little “trophies” of dedication
Hassett: Many hours in the lab led to the publishing of these works
Research takes time and patience to see positive results
Keeping consistent throughout the process is essential when pursuing a project
and it has been amazing to see all the progress made in these past two years
Dacia: I plan to take a gap year after graduation and join the Peace Corps to serve undeveloped Spanish-speaking countries in need of medical services
I want to work in the National Institute of Health (NIH) in an immunology-based lab focusing on Rheumatoid Arthritis and autoimmune diseases
I’m very passionate about helping my chronically ill community and advocating for them
Hassett: I will be taking the MCAT and applying to medical school this summer
I hope to become a surgeon while staying active in research
These past few years have shown me how vital research is in creating positive change both in the realm of medicine but also in our communities
I hope to attend graduate school for genetic counseling
All the skills I learned through participating in research
such as the importance of scientific communication
have inspired me to pursue a career that advocates for effective communication with patients as they navigate difficult healthcare decisions
I also hope to combine my research and clinical experiences together for a PhD
Dacia: I would tell them not to get discouraged when they face adversity in the laboratory or the classroom
Stay optimistic and focus on putting energy into your strengths
You are the only person capable of making yourself succeed
Hassett: Never limit yourself when thinking about topics/ interests to pursue
A lot of different projects have overlapping aspects you can explore
If a topic you would like to learn more about isn't a current ongoing project
there are many amazing faculty members willing to help
Grace: Embrace collaboration every chance you get
but just know that you deserve every achievement you get
and every mistake you make is a chance to learn and grow both as a person and scientist
Professor Izumi shares some words about his students:
the first undergraduate student to join my lab in August 2023
began as a Dean’s Office-funded research assistant supporting mammalian cell culture work during the fall semester
She later led an HIV cure study investigating FDA-approved cancer drugs
and presented her research at both the Mathias Research Conference and the Rising Stars in Cell Biology Symposium hosted by Johns Hopkins University in 2024
She received the 2024 CAS Summer Undergraduate Fellowship and is currently pursuing an Independent Study in Biology
"Dacia joined my lab as a freshman in spring 2024
trained under Hasset during the summer to master cell culture techniques
and assumed cell culture maintenance responsibilities in the fall 2024 as a Federal Work-Study-funded research assistant
including equal authorship with Hasset on our latest HIV cure article in Viruses
Dacia presented at the 2025 Mathias Conference alongside Hasset and will present independently at the Rising Stars in Cell Biology Symposium this year
She is a 2025 CAS Summer Fellowship recipient and a candidate for the Honors in Biology program
"Grace joined my lab in spring 2024 by taking my BIO-401: Mechanisms of Pathogenesis course in fall 2023
She developed a novel microscopic technique to visualize single HIV virions and has co-led two publications as co-first author
As a 2024 CAS Summer Fellowship awardee and Honors in Biology student
Grace presented her work at the 2024 Rising Stars Symposium and the 2025 Mathias Research Conference."

The Pearl Izumi Expedition Pro off-road shoe aims to offer off-road comfort with road-shoe stiffness and light weight
The Pearl Izumi Expedition Pro clipless shoes are designed for gravel and cross-country riding
My size 45 shoe without cleats weighs 345g on my scale
they set out to give riders every bit of performance to finish that upcoming race
The Pearl iZumi Expedition Pro features a stiff heel to toe 1:1 EX Pro Carbon sole for pedal efficiency
The stiff carbon sole makes every pedal stroke feel precise while the bottom tread layer has a minimal but effective open tread design to help shed mud
The abrasion-resistant TPU tread lugs are about 4/16th of an inch tall to help dig into the dirt and give traction when off the bike
the decently deep treads provided great traction even on steep
I have no complaints about walking comfort when it comes to quick hike-a-bike scenarios in these shoes
The Expedition Pro is wrapped in a sleek bonded
perforated synthetic leather upper that breathes decently well
The upper wraps well around the foot without losing its shape over time
I typically wear a regular width size 10.5 shoe
and the large open toe box was a highlight for me compared to shoes with a narrow toe box that hurt my feet not long into the ride
the BOA L6C allow independent adjustments along the mid and forefoot
The dual offset BOA system offers lots of clicks for adjustability
although they only turn to tighten and not loosen
It seems these BOA laces aren’t made out of stainless steel wires like they typically are; they appear to be made out of a fabric-like lace material that is less stiff and therefore more comfortable
I’ve also tested the Specialized Recon 2.0 gravel shoe
and while I would say the Recon 2.0 shoe is a bit more comfortable
the Pearl Izumi Expedition Pros were surprisingly comfortable from the beginning
My usual size 45 fit like a glove and stayed comfortable during and after the break-in period
The back of the shoe cups my heel comfortably while the front of the shoe provides a nice bed for toes to rest on
The shoe does a nice job keeping feet in a good position while on and off the bike with no pressure points
I ride flat pedals on my mountain bike and clipless shoes on my gravel/road bike
so I tested the Expedition Pro’s on gravel and road rides only
Throwing the shoes on and locking in fit is quick and easy
Every clip in and clip out was precise thanks to a well-designed TPU cleat channel
And while the on-the-bike performance was noticeably good
I think that is to be expected of a stiff “Pro” race shoe
the power transfer is notably efficient thanks to the carbon sole
One can argue that performance is all in the rider
but “Pro” equipment can definitely help take your riding to the next level whether you are racing or not
I could hear the tiny rocks crunching and hitting the carbon sole
I did try to avoid bigger rocks when walking
something I was not used to doing when walking in my Recon 2.0’s
The scratches on the carbon sole appear to be purely aesthetic
though I found that rocks also scratched and peeled some of that TPU layer within the first couple of casual gravel rides
that is what gravel and dirt will do to any shoe
but I would like these shoes to last a good while
Perhaps Pearl iZumi could add a thin layer of TPU over the carbon to protect it even if it adds a few more grams
There is enough TPU tread to walk around in
but these aren’t all day walking around shoes
The Pearl Izumi Expedition Pro shoes proved to be comfortable for long rides
Breathability is OK; my feet tend to run hot on rides
so I would like to see more breathable mesh materials and or maybe air channels to help keep things cool
The sturdy toe cap and heel protector do a nice job shielding against bumps and bruises
the Pearl iZumi Expedition Pro off-road shoes are a great choice for long-day training rides and race-ready performance
If you’re looking to just get out an casually explore on your gravel bike
these might not be the best choice; for that

Assistant Professor Jared Izumi is developing a virtual reality program that could eliminate bias from child behavioral assessments
schools use to assess the behavioral abilities of young children may be biased against students from underserved communities
This is all the more alarming considering behavioral assessments can impact the educational trajectory of a student’s life
assistant professor of counseling and school psychology in the Attallah College of Educational Studies
has been analyzing rater bias in schools since he wrote his dissertation on the subject
“The decisions that are informed by these behavioral tests can be irreversible and lifelong,” said Izumi
“If you’re making those decisions for a child
Behavioral assessments in schools rate children on social skills
These are usually evaluated through rating scales
the current method can be problematic because the perception and biases of the person giving the ratings can negatively impact children’s scores
Izumi is developing a program to eliminate rater bias with the use of virtual reality and artificial intelligence
“I wanted to look at whether we can just evaluate kids directly by observing their behavior within a virtual reality environment,” said Izumi
“I want to reduce the bias associated with the rater so that we can get a truer picture of each child’s functioning.”
Designed for third- to sixth-grade students
Izumi’s program requires children to wear a VR headset
The students will enter a virtual school environment where they will be tasked with responding to a variety of scenarios that usually play out in a classroom
a person recorded the action on a computer after a child performed some action within the VR world
This initial program was used in a 2023 study as more of a proof of concept
Izumi is now working on developing and testing the use of AI in the program
The AI would remove the need for a person to record the behaviors by automatically coding the child’s reaction within the program
asking a teacher for help or attempting to problem-solve
the AI will have to figure out how the user responded
such as by raising their hand or yelling at a teacher,” Izumi said
“So the AI has to understand the intent of the child
So it would be much more complex than the current iteration.”
The AI would also be able to adapt the VR environment to the children’s behavior
Characters and features in the VR environment would respond in more realistic ways
encouraging children to feel as if the virtual world is real
“Then their responses will be similar to how they respond in reality,” Izumi said
“The goal is that we can have appropriate responses in VR but only if the responses in VR are similar to the responses in reality
That requires a pretty intelligent AI system.”
In addition to improving the assessment of children’s behavioral skills
Izumi hopes his program will also be used for treatment or intervention to help schools engage students who have less developed social and emotional skills
schools use roleplaying to help children refine these skills
But Izumi said this practice is problematic
“We’re noticing in schools that kids have greater challenges with their social and emotional skills,” Izumi said
“So schools will use roleplaying but having a first-grader do a roleplay is pretty pointless.”
students will be able to repetitively practice these skills in a controlled environment
“It’s about figuring out what skills we need to teach them through better assessment,” Izumi said
it’s important to have adequate treatment or interventions
especially with the lack of social and emotional skills that we have seen since the pandemic
This is a new way of conducting this work that was literally impossible just a short time ago
I am always thinking about how we can move the field forward.”

This is a snapshot of the inspections conducted by the Lane County Health Department
licensed restaurants receive unannounced inspections that focus on food temperatures
Violations: Restaurant scores are based on a 100-point scale
and priority foundation violations deduct 3 points
Violations recorded on consecutive inspections result in point deductions being doubled
Scoring: Scores of 70 or higher are considered compliant
Restaurants scoring below 70 must be re-inspected within 30 days or face closure or other administrative action
Restaurants display a placard by the entrance to indicate whether they have passed their last inspection
The latest inspections are now available to view here
Priority Violations: The chlorine sanitizer concentration
specifically the chlorine sanitizer was swabbed at 0 ppm when it is supposed to be above 50
potentially hazardous food has not been consumed within the required time period or is not properly date-marked; specifically
ham dated 2/2 is still sitting on the shelf with the rest of the deli meats in the walk-in
The premises are not maintained free of insects
There are a number of drain flies in the facility
Priority violations: Potentially hazardous food is not maintained at proper hot or cold holding temperatures
milk is at 50° F in reach behind the front counter when it should be under 41° F
Priority Violations: A handwashing sink is not accessible for employee use at all times

WINNER OF THE RAIC’S 2025 PRIX DU XXE SIECLE
Kiyoshi Izumi’s design for the Yorkton Psychiatric Centre (1964) draws on his analysis of a predecessor: the Saskatchewan Hospital at Weyburn
When that psychiatric treatment facility opened in 1921
it was the largest building in the British Commonwealth
Izumi made extensive analysis of the Saskatchewan Hospital’s long
and communal areas filled with natural light
It also reflects Izumi’s keen interest in better understanding the perception of psychiatric patients
which prompted him to experiment with LSD under the supervision of psychiatric researchers Humphry Osmond and Abram Hoffer
“The object was to understand some of the experiences and problems of the mentally ill
so these problems could be considered in the building design,” he wrote in his 1970 article “LSD and Architectural Design.”
Yorkton’s sloped ceilings in the communal areas and extensive use of wood ceilings create a warm atmosphere and recognize the need for acoustic control to prevent echoes from disturbing patients
The design elements of the patients’ rooms were developed through models and incorporate many nuanced features
which is obliquely angled to avoid reflections at night that could disturb a patient
Traditional closets that might generate fearful thoughts about what they contain were avoided in favour of a storage area at the head of the bed
Controllable lighting and a natural wood ceiling contribute to an inviting atmosphere
Born in Vancouver to Japanese immigrant parents
Izumi is the earliest known Canadian architect of Japanese descent
Although his parents and two siblings were interned following the 1942 introduction of Canada’s War Measures Act
with the aid of its small Japanese community
Izumi graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Manitoba in 1948
receiving the Pilkington Travel Scholarship and later an RAIC scholarship for graduate studies at MIT in Boston
Taking advantage of postwar economic expansion
Izumi bolstered the development of modernist and civic architecture in Saskatchewan
He partnered with his former classmate Gordon Arnott and structural engineer James Sugiyama to open Izumi Arnott and Sugiyama
and Sugiyama’s in-house structural expertise
the team flourished and was responsible for many important civic buildings in Saskatchewan during its 15-year existence (1954-1969)
the firm was responsible for a cultural hat trick: the expanded Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery
and the Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts (now Conexus Arts Centre)
At the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon
the firm created the second master plan that guided the postwar expansion of the campus
and the Western College of Veterinary Medicine
Izumi Arnott and Sugiyama designed all of the Yorkton Psychiatric Centre’s furniture and employed durable
long-life-cycle materials such as Estevan brick and terrazzo flooring
which became a hallmark of their work of the 1950s and 60s
Bernard Flaman :: The Yorkton Psychiatric Centre represents Kiyoshi Izumi’s resilience and perseverance
and also his incredible talent as an early modernist architect in Canada
The nuanced grouping of buildings that are the former treatment units were designed not just with the long list of patient needs in mind
but are also sensitive to the climate and landscape
and offers clues to contemporary designers who are striving for longer material life cycles and greater sustainability
Dustin Valen :: Designed by one of the first Japanese-Canadian architects in this country
the Yorkton Psychiatric Centre is a triumph over the racist attitudes and policies enacted by Canada’s federal government
Izumi’s work also testifies to the growing postwar alliance between science and architecture
and points to architects’ key role in humanizing the built environment of Canada’s rapidly expanding welfare state
His sensitive approach to hospital design remains a model for how architects can encourage patient-centered approaches to healthcare by paying special attention to the emotional and physical needs of hospital users
Inderbir Singh Riar :: Kiyoshi Izumi’s Yorkton Psychiatric Centre is a rare and inspiring example of a postwar Canadian architect not imposing architecture as total solution to healthcare
and science to discover humane forms suited to treatment
Izumi’s experiments with LSD in order to approximate psychiatric patients’ perceptions was
a somewhat naïve attempt at approximating the mystery and difficulty of the mind
a bold desire to enter another realm of consciousness in order to perceive a richer and more complex world
Izumi’s unity of thought and action arose from a firm belief he articulated in 1948
in a “democratic planning process” that required objectivity and acceptance of all points of view
Izumi fulfilled this early ethical creed in the Yorkton Psychiatric Centre by respecting patients
and above all creating a building destined to last

How to find all of the meditation spots at the start of AC Shadows
What is Kuji-kiri and how do you unlock and find spots for this activity in Assassin's Creed Shadows? Kuji-kiri is an activity found in Assassin's Creed Shadows that Naoe can do
It involves finding a quiet spot to sit down and meditate
and is an important part of the individual questline called "Naoe's Journey," which spans a good portion of the campaign
This questline plays a significant role in the campaign
alongside your quest to hunt down the Shinbakufu
and engaging in Kuji-kiri is great for learning Naoe's backstory and life in Iga up to when you first see her at the start of the game
You can't just sit and meditate anywhere though
You instead have to look out for locations that will also display an orange icon illustrating a meditating figure
This icon also doesn't appear until you're near a meditation spot
though if you see question mark icons on the world map
it's quite possible that they might be Kuji-kiri locations
This guide will explain where you can find the four Kuji-kiri spots in the starting region of Izumi Setts
as well as what the Kuji-kiri minigame entails
These are all of the Kuji-kiri locations in Izumi Settsu:
This is the first Kuji-kiri you're likely to find as the shrine is en route from Makinoodera Temple
where you leave once you're fully recovered following the events of the prologue
As you'll be on the story quest to find Tomiko
and along that path you will discover Eboshigata Hachiman Shrine on your left
As you past the torii gate and head up the steps
the orange Kuji-Kiri icon should also appear
so head to that spot and sit down to begin your meditation
As soon as you've unlocked the hideout after reuniting with Tomiko
you'll discover there's actually a Kuji-kiri spot there
Just head to the very east side of the map and you'll find it on a small spot of land in a pond surrounded by waterfalls and a cherry tree
you ought to come across this one as you travel southwest and come to the sub-region Katano Foothills
Keep following this path and you will reach a place called Rolling Glen where you will find a Kuji-kiri spot in front of a Torii gate
and where you can also see Osaka castle in the far distance
The fourth one is a little out of the way from the others as you actually have to cross a river to get to it
It also doesn't have a specific location name but is technically in the sub-region of Nakayama Peak
though much closer to bordering with Amagasaki - in fact
there is a Kakurega safehouse you can unlock very nearby
If you go west from either Amagasaki Castle or the Amagasaki Kakurega
stick to the coast and you'll find the Kuji-kiri spot just as you leave Amagasaki over a small bridge
The meditation spot is under a tree and overlooking the sea
interact with it as Naoe and she kneel at that spot and get into a position to meditate
This takes the form of a rhythm minigame where button icons will appear in a diamond formation on screen (this can either be directional inputs
A ring will appear around an icon and you have to wait until it has shrunk around the icon before pressing the corresponding button
These rings appear in a clockwise direction
but will start to fade the more zen you get
You'll need to stay in sync to the rhythm and keep pressing at the right time until you start seeing kanji characters appear where the button icons once were
The visuals on screen will also start turning monochrome
displaying all the button icons again and forcing you to complete the mini-game from the beginning
be aware that your press counts as long as you do so when the ring is on the faint but thick circle around the button image
It's therefore better for your timing to be early than late
completing the minigame will flashback to her story before the events in the prologue
and you'll be thrown into a substantial playable mission
As the flashbacks occur in chronological order
leading up to the moment you first see her from the start of the game
it shouldn't matter what order you find these Kuji-Kiri spots
Completing Kuji-kiri will also earn you 500 XP and 1 Knowledge point
which you need to unlock Naoe and Yasuke's Mastery skill tree tiers
That's it for the Kuji-kiri locations in Izumi Settsu, which should also then allow you to advance the next part of "Naoe's Journey." For more on Assassin's Creed Shadows, check out our guides on how to change characters and whether Naoe or Yasuke is the better choice for you.

CAS Conversations offers fresh perspectives from the incredible people shaping our campus and beyond
has been making headlines as outbreaks continue to spread among wild and farmed birds across the United States
the potential for the virus to mutate and pose a greater threat is keeping scientists on high alert
understanding bird flu has never been more important
In this CAS Conversation, we speak with virologist and American University biology professor Taisuke Izumi to break down everything we need to know about bird flu
From how the virus spreads to its risks for humans to ongoing efforts to prevent a major outbreak
Izumi provides us with valuable insight into this evolving public health issue
and how does it differ from other flu viruses we hear about
is a respiratory virus that primarily infects birds
bird flu mainly spreads among wild and farmed birds
usually through direct contact with infected birds
PH: How does bird flu spread among birds and is there any risk to humans
TI: Bird flu spreads when birds come into close contact with infected birds
Wild birds can carry the virus without getting sick
but when it spreads to farmed chickens or ducks
certain strains have infected other animals and humans
usually through direct exposure to sick birds
human-to-human transmission is extremely rare
PH: How exactly could people contract bird flu
TI: People can contract bird flu through direct contact with infected birds
but not from eating properly cooked poultry or eggs
so as long as poultry is cooked to 165°F (74°C) and eggs are fully cooked
Handling raw poultry or consuming undercooked eggs from an infected bird poses minimal risk
but everyone should always follow food safety guidelines
PH: How widespread are the human cases—and how serious
a total of 70 confirmed cases have been reported in the United States since 2024
These cases are very rare and have primarily occurred among individuals who work closely with infected animals
the first human death from bird flu in the US was reported in Louisiana
there is no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission of bird flu
PH: What precautions are in place to prevent a major outbreak
such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
closely monitor bird flu outbreaks to prevent major incidents
Farmers implement measures such as testing birds and culling infected flocks to halt virus spread
the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) granted a conditional license for an avian influenza vaccine developed by Zoetis to protect poultry from the virus
Health experts also monitor for any mutations in the virus that could increase its danger to humans
While the seasonal flu vaccine does not directly protect against bird flu
getting vaccinated can reduce the risk of simultaneous infections
co-infection with both avian and human influenza viruses could
potentially creating a new virus that spreads more easily between humans
receiving the seasonal flu vaccine is a recommended
it is essential to avoid contact with sick or dead birds
PH: Is there a realistic chance of bird flu evolving in a way that poses a major threat to humans
TI: While bird flu viruses can mutate and potentially become more infectious to humans
Scientists closely monitor these viruses for mutations that could facilitate human-to-human transmission
was caused by an avian-origin influenza A virus that adapted to humans
resulting in an estimated 50–100 million deaths worldwide
the risk of a similar pandemic remains low
but experts continue to study and prepare for any potential changes
PH: What’s the most important thing the public should know about bird flu right now
the risk of bird flu to the general population is low
It is essential to wear proper protective equipment (PPE)
such as thoroughly cooking poultry to an internal temperature of at least 165°F and ensuring eggs are fully cooked

The Pro Air mitts are available in four colours
The soft nose wipe panel is an excellent addition for me
The finger pull tabs are well done and very sturdy
quality option that use a different from the norm palm material to blend modern and retro stylings together
Palm provides good comfort and grip despite the lack of built-in padding
Wrist material creates a gap when holding the bars
The dust may have settled after Tadej Pogacar’s exciting victory at Strade Bianche
but the Italian race claimed its fair share of victims
there were plenty of bloodied and bruised riders at the end of the day
and it was clear from the race images that some riders' hands really suffered.
I’m reviewing the Pearl Izumi Pro Air mitts
an interesting product from the American manufacturer
They combine modern and more retro styling in a well-received combination.
pro cyclists would have their gloves custom-made from soft
and the tan colour palms of the Pro Air mitts hark back to that classic retro styling for me.
The gloves are thin and offer a great bar feel that’s a little different from other gloves
The gloves retail for $50 / €50 / £45, but if you are looking for warmer gloves, head to our best winter cycling gloves buyers guide for the best of the best selection.
three of which have a black coloured synthetic leather palm
Only the navy pair which I have tested have the lighter tan option
There is a simple Pearl Izumi wordmark on the outside of each hand and a ‘PI’ logo on the inside bottom of each wrist.
My navy test pair use a thin mesh section on the back of each hand with a light check pattern
and there is also a soft microfibre nose wipe panel.
Laredo is the name of the material used which AX Materials makes
It’s an artificial leather replacement that is PFC chemical-free
The brand describes it as a ‘direct alternative to goat and grain leather’ for a breathable and durable alternative
It’s very soft and looks stylish to me with its light perforations.
The material is a few millimetres thick and there is also zero padding which means you get a very direct bar feel
the nature of the material makes things really comfortable
and there’s a slightly different feeling compared to say a mitt with gel inserts for instance.
airy and comfortable and I do like the feel the Laredo palm material provides
There isn’t the same sticky grip some gloves with silicone or gel palm grippers have
assured feeling when you hold the bars or shifters
and the dark navy exterior goes well with a lot of kit
The gloves pull on and pull off using two neat
but the nature of the material means I end up with a bit of a gap around the outside of the wrist which doesn’t look quite as neat
That just might be the way the gloves fit on my hands though.
The palm material is also still very soft and comfy after several washes and regular use
and so far there is minimal discolouration which I was half expecting from darker bartape over time
There are no specific care instructions for it
but I hope it stays that way over time.
These gloves have a higher retail price than plenty of others
though they aren’t the most pricey on the market
If you want some gloves to protect your hands and provide padding
I think the styling and AX Loredo palm are what is going to really appeal
and I suspect the decision to use this specific material has also bumped up the cost slightly
If it does it for you and you're happy to spend the money then you won't be disappointed
These are good quality gloves that you can use for a range of riding
I have used them on and off-road and have found them to be both comfortable and durable
They have been washed quite a few times and still look good
as does the Loredo material which lends a really nice
retro feel to a thoroughly modern mitt.

The world came together 50 years ago to ban biological weapons and in today’s volatile geopolitical climate we can ill-afford to let this moral safeguard “erode”, the UN’s High Representative for Disarmament Affairs said on Wednesday
26 March marks the 50th anniversary of the entry into force of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) – the first multilateral disarmament treaty to ban an entire category of weapons of mass destruction
Secretary-General António Guterres hailed the Convention as a cornerstone of international peace and security
having contributed for over five decades to “collective efforts to reject the use of disease as a weapon.”
which effectively prohibits the development
stockpiling and use of biological and toxin weapons
ensuring that advances in biology and biotechnology are used solely for “peaceful purposes” – and not to trigger artificial epidemics that threaten us all
Disarmament chief Izumi Nakamitsu told Member States in Geneva that the BWC “remains a testament to the conscience of humankind”
“We must ensure the instruments of the 20th century can respond to today’s global 21st century challenges,” stressed Ms
In his message, the Secretary-General urged all States parties to actively participate in the Working Group on Strengthening the BWC – which verifies compliance
capacity-building and assistance – and called on the Group to accelerate its efforts in this milestone year
“These efforts reinforce the commitment in the Pact for the Future
for all countries to pursue a world free of biological weapons,” he said
While the vast majority of UN Member States have joined the convention
The Secretary-General called on those governments to ratify the treaty without delay
The UN disarmament affairs office, UNODA
is working to support the convention’s implementation – especially in Africa where it has engaged 100 young scientists through the Youth for Biosecurity Fellowship in the last five years
let us stand united against biological weapons,” said the Secretary-General
As the world grapples with new global health challenges and geopolitical uncertainty
the BWC remains a vital barrier against the misuse of science
is essential to prevent biological weapons from ever being used again – whether in conflict
“Let’s use this occasion to...recognise that the use of biological weapons must not only be unthinkable but also impossible,” concluded Ms
increasingly dangerous new technologies and an elevated nuclear risk
the Secretary-General on Monday highlighted his concern that the UN Conference on Disarmament is consistently failing to deliver
As United Nations-led talks on nuclear disarmament continued in Geneva
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned on Sunday that “the drums of nuclear war are beating once again”.
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear husband

He continued his religious studies at the Vancouver School of Theology and regularly contributed articles to the Japanese newspaper
Yasuo obtained his Master’s degree in Buddhist Studies from the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley
he served as the head minister in temples across Canada
and the Buddhist Temple of Southern Alberta (BTSA)
he received a certificate from the Hongwanji in Kyoto
recognizing his 50 years of service as a minister
Izumi delivered his final Dharma talk as the head minister of the BTSA
which he had helped to establish several years earlier through tireless work
Yasuo shared the Dharma through his writing throughout his life
He is the author of books written in Japanese and English
”To Light Up One Corner,” “Kudensho,” and “The Story of Hanako,” a story written from the perspective of Hanako
the family’s beloved black Labrador Retriever
He worked diligently to compile many of the sermons he wrote and delivered over his career in a series of booklets called “Dharma: My Guiding Light.” His final booklet
shortly before arriving in Canada to begin their new life
Together they would share hopes and dreams for the future
as they navigated the country that would become their permanent home
Shortly after he began his new job at the Lethbridge Buddhist Temple
Sachi helped write addresses on the envelopes for each member
stamped and mailed the early editions of Yasuo’s newsletter
Yasuo and Sachi soon came to love Canada and made many new friends who welcomed them into their lives and homes for New Year’s Day dinners
Yasuo could often be found with Sachi getting ice cream at Dairy Queen or McDonald’s
and taking road trips simply to enjoy the beauty of nature
Yasuo’s career demanded his attention 24 hours a day
Dad took the most pleasure in the simplest things in life
and he taught his three daughters and two sons — his “treasures,” as he once referred to them — not to take anything for granted and instilled in them an appreciation and love for all things in the world
teaching them to treat all living things with respect and compassion
“Results will come later,” he often told them
Dad would pack Sachi and his five children into one of many station wagons over the years to go camping in Chilliwack or take the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria every Christmas for a real adventure that would include visits to Miniature World
His children would all grow up to share his curiosity and appreciation of nature
as well as his love of reading and lifelong learning
Yasuo would welcome three sons-in-law and two daughters-in-law to his family
He especially looked forward to spending time with his sons and sons-in-law playing golf
and engaging in deep conversations over beers
Yasuo had nine grandchildren
“Ojiichan” or “Grandpa” was a gentle and kind-hearted man with a child-like sense of humour
He was possessed by a mischievous spirit and would gleefully participate in arm wrestling matches with them and competitions to see who could do the most push-ups
writing their names in Japanese calligraphy (shuji)
and watching action movies and YouTube videos together
they watched in awe as Ojiichan chanted sutras and delivered sermons to a rapt audience
a man who was smaller than most of his grandchildren
suddenly appearing larger than life with the attention he received from his congregation
was a pillar in the Japanese and Buddhist communities and beyond
and he could fill a room with his energy and his easy-going and friendly nature
He was a man of few words but had the ability to inspire everyone he met with his genuine kindness
He truly believed that all living beings are equal and started the annual Pet Memorial Service held each February at the BTSA
He was well-known for his charitable work serving the community and in 2018
he received the Consul-General of Japan’s Commendation
recognizing his efforts in sharing Japanese culture and Jodo Shinshu Buddhism in the community
he could be found at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden
at the bell ringing service in frigid Alberta temperatures
an event that attracts upwards of 100 visitors
he could be found enthusiastically pounding out a beat on the taiko drums during the annual Obon Odori Festival at Galt Gardens
brightly decorated with paper lanterns that he brought in through donations from Akita prefecture in Japan
He made regular visits to the Lethbridge Correctional Centre as a chaplain
meeting with inmates and listening without judgement
and to Chinook Regional Hospital as a spiritual care advisor where he showed genuine compassion and offered guidance to patients and families in their darkest moments
“We all must die when the time comes and we must part from our loved ones one day
Amida Buddha of great compassion appears for our suffering
‘I am with you always.’”
Yasuo retired from his formal work as a minister in October 2023 but continued to contribute to the community
He volunteered his time teaching Japanese calligraphy at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden
Yasuo taught himself the art of Japanese “sumi-e” painting
and included many of his original works in his final booklet
He will be remembered for his unwavering and lifelong dedication to sharing the teachings of the Buddha and could always be heard reciting the Nembutsu
We feel peace of mind knowing that he has heard Amida Buddha calling to him
your true home of the Pure Land is ready for you.” and that he is there with Hanako

“It’s a sad story,” states a character at the end of “Set My Heart on Fire,” Izumi Suzuki’s first novel to be translated into English
Suzuki switches genres to tell the story of a young woman navigating the hookup
Suzuki and the protagonist share enough in common — a first name
marriage to a Japanese free saxophonist — to raise the question of how much Suzuki herself seeps into Izumi’s detached musings
This question is especially pertinent to Izumi’s thoughts on addiction and youth
which are the main driving force in a novel with a sparse plot
The novel follows Izumi’s life over the course of a decade — from 23 years old to her mid-30s — though very little actually happens in the first half of the novel
Izumi leads readers in first-person through her sexual conquests with rock artists and her feeling of being a misfit
Her impartiality towards everything lasts until she meets Jun
thus starting a relationship that cleaves her life into a distinct before and an after
It is only after Jun that Izumi fully understands her attachment to her carefree youth as well as her fixation on what it means to be past one’s “golden era.” This lost time looks like a town going into decline
The musical aspect of the novel comes naturally as Suzuki seamlessly eases readers into it
She manages this by slipping in the name of a band or song playing in the background of a scene
such as Izumi running “at a different tempo” to her lovers and describing the repetitiveness of a night as if “an echo-chamber effect pedal had been plugged into time.” Suzuki even subtly notes the condition of a continually westernizing and modernizing Japan by having Izumi mention the influence of overseas rock icons on Japanese music
and the rise of bustling shopping districts
is the temporal transition between vignettes
Although the vignettes are arranged chronologically
the time jumps between them are inconsistent
ranging from as short as several weeks to as long as several years
The omission of the exact time passed is a bit disorienting
forcing readers to filter through characters’ conversations and Izumi’s internal monologue to fill themselves in on the current situation
as well as events that were passed over in the time jump
Izumi is delightfully contradictory as a self-aware narcissist harboring a deep self-loathing
her inner thoughts come across as overly direct
to the point that it nearly becomes awkward to read
Both her highs — “There’s no one else in the world like me” — and her lows — “Who could be honest with a monstrous woman like me?” — stick out as peculiarly pointed and on-the-nose in the midst of Izumi’s otherwise nonchalant tone
There are also moments where Izumi’s narration borders on metafictional; she feels so detached from her life it is as if she is “watching everything from a slight distance… It’s just like watching a film.” At another point
Izumi uses literary terminology to describe her life’s trajectory
claiming there is “no consistent overarching storyline,” and that she “just is not a protagonist.” Her self-awareness adds another dimension to her that calls for readers’ sympathy towards her situation
When conversing with a friend about her own resigned acceptance of events and indifference towards their outcomes
Izumi recalls the moment she realized that nothing she did could change the world she was born into — a world “created for [her] and it resembled a bad dream.”
Suzuki maintains Izumi’s appeal to readers by balancing out her hopelessness and pessimism with a determination to make the best of a “broken” world
some exorbitant happiness could always come along” sheds a new light on her thrill-seeking lifestyle: the men
and pills she goes through are not just reckless choices but desperate attempts to hang on to life
the men of her youth transition from sexual escapades to representative figures of the different eras of Izumi’s youth
Izumi describes the man at the focus of her decade-long obsession as “the symbol of a vanished time,” of which she “couldn’t let it go.” Observing Izumi’s change from letting “everything pass” to belatedly realizing she may not want to let go is the core of Suzuki’s poignantly-written piece on a woman forced to outgrow her youth

giving new listeners a full purview of the worlds Kobayashi created over this period
You’ll immediately get a sense of the eccentricity you’re dealing with here on “Mas Que Nada,” a cover of Sergio Mendes’s samba touchstone
Kobayashi switches it up with synths and funky rhythms
as if the track was filtered through Memphis style instead of Brazil
“Coffee Rumba,” off her 1982 album Nuts Nuts Nuts
juxtaposed against the syncopated robotics of the bass and drumline
With “Quiet Explosion”’s Plastics-esque groove
the first half of Choice Cuts is an exercise in Kobayashi’s love of the new wave of techno-pop
The second half is defined by more conventional funk and jazz structures that are no less lively
“Palm St.” makes you want to shimmy the entire time
such is its infectiousness coupled with the overdub of Kobayashi’s voice
conjuring a night at the Copacabana complete with a giant ballroom and copious percussion section
Bookended by the “Crazy Love,” it’s abundantly clear Kobayashi was a faithful student: the addictive track is a product of the Philadelphia machine
Choice Cuts proves Izumi Kobayashi an adept maestro and blender of influences
spearheading a five-year run of brilliance with her buoyant style
Dr. Lance Izumi, senior director of the Pacific Research Institute’s Center for Education, recently wrote “The Great Classroom Collapse.” The book centers around a fundamental question: Why can’t kids today read or do math
“The Great Classroom Collapse” is divided into three sections:
as well as the state of American education more broadly
Neeraja Deshpande: The crisis of student behavior is constantly covered in the news
A lot of them say that they would like to manage behavior
Lance Izumi: Sometimes the problem isn’t even the teacher
The teacher may want to manage the classroom
but the issue often lies with the administration in the district
The district may implement policies that force leniency in the classroom
One thing a high school student in Northern California told me was that when incidents occurred
the perpetrators were never held responsible for their actions
There were no consequences for their behaviors
which encourages similar behavior in the future
This is why the fire alarm was constantly being pulled; those kids knew there would be no repercussions and that they would not be held accountable
adhering to a social justice theory that discourages discipline because it might disproportionately affect certain minority or racial groups
they are preventing real learning from occurring in the classroom for everyone
Neeraja Deshpande: Why do you think student behavior across the nation has deteriorated these past few years
Lance Izumi: Many people wonder why there is so much disruption in schools today
A lot of this actually stems from the fact that these kids are not learning
I talk about an interview with a mom who is also a former teacher in Georgia
Her child had huge reading problems because he was being taught using a very ineffective reading instructional method
This led to behavioral issues—he started to act out due to frustration and anger
filing complaints and getting legal counsel
he was put into a situation where he received more effective reading instruction
he is now flourishing…which highlights that he wasn’t taught the fundamentals
leading to frustration and negative behaviors
One point I make in the book is about the bad apple theory: a disruptive child affects not only themselves but the entire classroom
Research shows that the performance of all the other kids declines when disruptive behavior is not corrected
teachers are forced to use certain curricula that
are ineffective and lead to students not learning what they could have learned with better curricula
Lance Izumi: [Bad curricula have] put up blocks for kids
I spoke to a math tutor in…the San Francisco Bay Area
He told me that he works with affluent kids who
when it comes time to multiply simple fractions
don’t know that they can just get the answer—three-eighths—by multiplying the numerators and denominators
they’re asked to color pictures and shade in different parts to eventually arrive at the answer of three-eighths
The tutor remarked that students would be given 20 problems to solve by coloring in pictures
He questioned how that method is efficient or helpful when they need to calculate something quickly
This math tutor had previously been a high school teacher in that school district
he felt obligated to follow the prescribed method
his students had poor performance—certainly not as high as it should have been
But it wasn’t his fault; it was the fault of those who insisted on using these ineffective curricula with students
Neeraja Deshpande: What relationship does the teacher licensure system have with these curricula
Lance Izumi: One of the things I cite in the book is that if you look at what is being taught in the schools of education at universities—specifically
these teacher credentialing programs—it turns out that in California
the vast majority of these schools received D and F grades from the National Council on Teacher Quality
This is because they fail to teach prospective teachers how to use phonics and other research-based reading methods
if you’re coming through a system and earning your credentials from schools that are receiving such poor grades for not teaching effective methods
what good does it do to have a teaching credential
you might be worse off than if you knew nothing
because you’ll enter the classroom and teach kids a wrong and demonstrably ineffective method
This is what these schools of education promote—progressive teaching methods—that can actually hinder students’ ability to read
you might at least try your own experimentation to see what works
You’d likely be better off doing that than being convinced that a bad method is the right approach

Sushi is by far one of my favorite meals to have. There are various sushi restaurants in the city of Fort Collins and most of them will provide a truly great experience
JAWS sushi on West Elizabeth is my personal favorite
Fort Collins did not have an all-you-can-eat sushi option for quite some time
That was until Sushi-Fi opened on E Harmony back in June
I have gone to Sushi-Fi a few times since it opened and I remain a fan
They have a basic all-you-can-eat option for $33 a person and a premium all-you-can-eat option for $48
I typically go for the basic roll option and I am more than satisfied with my experience
Here is my experience at Sushi-Fi when I went for the first time

There is now another all-you-can-eat sushi spot in Northern Colorado. The new restaurant is called Sushi Izumi. The restaurant opened its doors in October and there has been a lot of enthusiasm about more all-you-can-eat sushi options in Fort Collins
but there are now more choices in the Choice City
I have not been to Sushi Izumi yet. However, while looking at their menu
I found that Sushi Izumi has rolls that are approachable and a little something for every taste pallet
You can check out the new Sushi Izumi at 200 West Prospect Road Fort Collins, CO 80526
