The asphalt tracks at Kisogawa Maedo Minami Park
were designed with input from a professional BMX cyclist and are free to use
where people cannot stay overnight but can enjoy their day near the Kiso River
and the BMX park has beginner and intermediate level pump tracks — circuits that have a series of bumps
Reservations are unnecessary and bicycles are available to rent
a 32-year-old professional rider who has won the Asian Mountain Bike Continental Championships and other events
served as a consultant on the track’s design
“Most of the courses are usually made of dirt
and riders can go faster on it,” Shimizu said
Shimizu and others demonstrated various tricks and also held a trial session for visitors
I want to practice here again and be able to jump,” said Mao Iida
“I hope first-timers will feel free to come,” Shimizu said
which comprises five buildings equipped with air conditioning and heating
Visitors can barbecue on the grounds but cannot stay overnight
The area also has a store that sells snacks and drinks
which has a slide and other equipment for children
was designed with input from students of Inabahigashi Elementary School in Kakamigahara
Aiming to take advantage of the Kiso River’s riverbed and levee areas
the city government developed a plan in fiscal 2014 to build the park
To make the park a place where people from different areas and of all ages can interact with each other
the city adopted the Park-PFI public solicitation system
which utilizes ideas and funds from the private sector
and is closed on Tuesdays and during the year-end and New Year’s holidays
The glamping facilities require advanced reservations
which will start being accepted at around the end of January

Situated in Kakamigahara City, Japan, the new beauty salon designed by Studio Velocity finds its place amid a serene natural environment
The salon’s design embraces the city’s setting
where the Nagara River flows northward and the Kiso River winds southward
making it a location surrounded by water and woodland
including the Kakamigahara Alps Nippon Line Unuma Forest
Kakamigahara City’s tap water is sourced from underground wells situated 20 to 40 meters below ground
the design team has accordingly shaped up the salon’s landscape to expose the groundwater to the surface
creating a water basin that is an integral part of the local water cycle
Free well water is regularly replenished in the basin and also used to nurture the ‘small forest’ that envelops the structure
The ‘small forest’ surrounding the salon serves a dual purpose
providing a sense of privacy for the clients while allowing natural light and scenic views to filter through thanks to its expansive glass walls
The ground floor houses essential beauty salon features
such as a reception area and haircutting spaces
Upstairs, under a single-slope roof, the architects at Studio Velocity have formed an open
wall-free terrace that embraces the elements
and the surrounding greenery to create a refreshing and spacious environment
This space is accessible to clients for relaxation and interaction while waiting at the salon
as well as for enjoying coffee and taking in the view
salon staff can use this area during their breaks
the hair salon utilizes the region’s underground water resources
infusing the space with a sense of openness and fluidity
the climbing beams of the single-slope roof were used as diagonal members instead of braces
eliminating the need for load-bearing walls that separated the longitudinal spaces
In the longitudinal direction of the underwater side
the ‘small forest’ surrounding the building adds a pop of green to the interior
the second floor can be used freely by customers while waiting at the beauty salon
such as a reception area and cutting areas

Gifu — Elementary schoolers succeeded in displacing an F-4 Phantom fighter jet in a special “tug-of-war” event held in Gifu Prefecture on Feb
The event was part of a special program organized by the Gifu-Kakamigahara Air and Space Museum
which acquired the aircraft after it was retired
The jet was formerly operated by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force at Gifu Air Base until March 2021
before being loaned for free to Kakamigahara City
which has been exhibiting the plane at the museum since Feb
rear fuselage and tail were all manufactured at a factory in the city
The children strained while pulling a rope that was connected to the fuselage while shouting “wasshoi!” which is loosely translatable as “heave-ho!”
“The airplane was super-cool,” enthused Kakeru Hattori
“When we pulled the rope and the plane moved
I was so surprised that I couldn’t help but scream with delight.”
The children later took photos of themselves with the fighter jet
“I hope the students take home pleasant memories of the event.”

Vox Dei is a daily column that runs on Page 1 of The Asahi Shimbun
The space inside was as small as a sleeping berth of an old overnight train
I recently visited Gifu-Kakamigahara Air and Space Museum in Kakamigahara
and saw a replica of the re-entry capsule used in the first human spaceflight in history
was chosen to be the first human to travel into outer space
His spacecraft launched and landed on April 12
“The Earth is blue.” While these words are ascribed to Gagarin
it is not clear whether he actually said them
both the 27-year-old man and this quotable line immediately gained international fame
Gagarin himself died one spring at the age of 34 during a training flight for a military airplane that ultimately crashed
“While he continued to have a challenging spirit
he led a life of agony after his great achievement
suffering both mental and physical problems,” Kano said
both of which depicted his life after the spaceflight
he became the poster child for the Soviet space program and a symbol of national pride
He also became an alcoholic and his relationship with his wife became strained
His life was a story of the sorrow of a young man who was used as a weapon in the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union
who was the proud Russian leader when the Soviet Union beat the United States to space
But he was treated merely as a military pilot during the era of Leonid Brezhnev
But I also feel sympathy for him as I imagine his pain of having to serve as a tool for the national leader’s endeavor to add a jewel to his political legacy
As a person who is both claustrophobic and acrophobic
I would beg off being used as a card in a sink-or-swim national gamble on space

Gifu Prefecture--A brand of sake targeted at health-conscious imbibers that smells like butter has made a splash with French connoisseurs
capturing a prize in its debut at the prestigious 2020 Kura Master contest
picked up the Platinum Medal award in the “junmai-shu” (pure rice sake) category at the annual competition in France
is characterized by its thick flavor combining savory “umami” and sour tastes
“I’m pleased to receive the award for a sake that can be bought by anyone anywhere,” said Rieko Hayashi
“I think the fact that it goes well with food helped it win the recognition.”
sake pressed from “moromi” (sake mash) is aged for three years and fermented with lactic acid bacteria using a method the brewery patented in 2019
Kura Master was first held in 2017 as a sake show organized by French sake lovers for their compatriots
Sommeliers from the country’s top five-star hotels
as well as chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants
serve as jurors to sample sake in blind taste tests
A total of 824 brands submitted from Japan and elsewhere were entered in the contest’s 2020 edition
Eighty-four brands were selected for the Platinum Medal award
“I wanted to know how it would be accepted by local people in order to promote additive-free sake outside Japan,” Hayashi said
The sake has been approved as a health-conscious sake under the Japan Brand Development Assistance Program run by the Ministry of Economy

one company in Gifu Prefecture is successfully developing foreign workers into skilled engineers
three Chinese nationals have obtained the newly established Specified Skilled Worker No
which allows foreign nationals to work virtually indefinitely in Japan.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
Because of the difficulty in acquiring the No
which requires high levels of knowledge and skills
it is extremely rare for one company to have multiple workers with the status
The company’s initiative is likely to attract attention as Japan ponders how to accept foreign workers amid the nation’s declining birthrate and aging population

Gifu police arrested a 25-year-old police officer on Thursday for allegedly having sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 16
Haruki Takeyama from the city of Kakamigahara
who serves in the community affairs division of Kakamigahara Police Station
according to investigators.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
The arrest stems from an incident on July 17 last year when Takeyama — then a police academy student — allegedly had sexual intercourse with an underage girl at a hotel in the town of Ginan while being fully aware of her age
It is also alleged that he recorded the incident on his smartphone
Authorities indicated that the two had no prior acquaintance
information regarding another incident of inappropriate conduct involving Takeyama was submitted by a third party
A search of his smartphone uncovered video footage from the day of the alleged 2023 incident
The police are currently looking into how the two individuals met
"This is an outrageous act that should never involve police officers
It is extremely shameful," Chief Inspector Tatsuami Goto said
"We will take strict measures based on the results of the investigation."

Toyo Ito has created an elegant pavilion for the dead in Japan
The Meiso no Mori (Forest of Meditation) Funeral Hall was built as part of a “park cemetery” at Kakamigahara City
which allowed Ito to consider the subject of death free from the context of religion
white concrete roof billows up to 11.5m above a travertine platform beside a small lake
Freely dispersed columns drop seamlessly from the undulating ceiling
while the interior is marked off by walls of 19mm-thick glass
The plan is organised around rectilinear enclosures sheltering the private funerary rituals – farewells to the dead
There’s a clear formal relationship between the walls
the floor and the roof through the interplay between the materials and the subtle edge detailing
All the elements work harmoniously together in the composition
but the starring role clearly belongs to the roof
describes the guiding image: “Rather than the heavy
dignified architecture usual with crematoria
as if a gentle snowfall had settled lightly upon the site to form a broad and generous roof.”
The roof’s form is the outcome of a balance between functional
achieved in collaboration with structural engineer Mutsuro Sasaki
In its balance of grounded masses and uplifting fluidity
the Meiso no Mori Funeral Hall has a timeless and contemplative quality
The project continues Ito’s recent explorations into spatial ambiguity
which dispensed with conventional categories of structure and infill
