She's now appealing to the public in hopes of answers
“I would just ask them to call the police and give information
because I will not have my daughter for Christmas

French filmmaker Vincent Le Port and Hungarian helmer Kornél Mundruczó are receiving some ARTE France Cinéma coin for future projets that are being readied for 2026 launches. After Bruno Reidal, Confessions of a Murderer (which our Nicholas Bell called “challenging arthouse horror” – read review)

“Kamo’i Latu is an energizer bunny
torpedo safety who is most comfortable roaming the middle of the field and triggering downhill to throw shoulders at the ball-carrier.”
Kamo’i Latu started his career as a three-star recruit at Utah
only starting in one game before transferring to Wisconsin in 2022
He played under defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard
who made the Wisconsin defense a fearsome opponent
He was an all-around playmaker under Leonhard
Mike Tressel took over in 2023 and Latu wasn’t the same
He was benched in the second game of the season and was a part-time player
Latu’s energy level and motor run hot whenever he’s on the field
He always wants to make a big hit or trigger on a downhill play
His click-and-close ability is efficient and quick and pairs well with his underneath play recognition skills
He gets downhill quickly and is unafraid to throw his shoulder pads around with offensive linemen or tight ends
His best attribute is being a middle-of-the-field robber who can keep his eyes on the quarterback and key on throws in zone to make plays
He’s proficient as a two-high safety
showing a good backpedal and turn-and-run ability with easy change-of-direction skills and hip flip
His acceleration gives him a handy tool to close on tight ends and throws to the flat and underneath
there are times when he needs to be trusted as the last line of defense for your team and Latu is a poor tackler
He attacks high and low and doesn’t wrap up
so ball-carriers can bounce off of him for extra yards
He is a jitterbug defender who takes poor angles downhill in the run game and launches himself around the field
missing assignments and allowing the quarterback’s eyes to manipulate him
Latu needs to be more patient as a coverage defender and pay attention to his assignments; he was benched in the second game of the 2023 season against Washington State after getting beat on a double pass for a touchdown
trying to trigger downhill and make the play
Whether he isn’t a fit for Tressel’s defense or his confidence was shot early in the season
he fell far from the all-around playmaking he showcased under Leonhard
Latu needs to win a starting job at safety for Wisconsin and be a more patient and trustworthy player this season to earn the title of “chess piece” for a defense
but the fundamentals must be better in his fifth college football season

an asteroid has been linked to an impact crater on the Moon which is believed to have created it
The new analysis found that asteroid Kamo‘oalewa
a ‘quasi-moon’ that moves in and out of orbit around Earth
was probably hurled into space from the Giordano Bruno crater
Kamo'oalewa has existed for several million years and is one of Earth’s co-orbital asteroids
which means it orbits the Sun on a similar path as Earth
It measures between 150 and 190 feet in diameter and is due to be studied very soon
having been selected as the target of China’s Tianwen-2 mission
Kamo‘oalewa is similar in appearance to lunar rock
suggests it could have originated from the Moon
the study simulated the impact needed to launch a space rock like Kamo‘oalewa into orbit and found the resulting lunar crater would be 10–20km wide and 10 million or so years old
The four-million-year-old 22km-wide (14-mile) Giordano Bruno is the only lunar crater to fit those criteria
we have been studying rocks collected by astronauts on the surface of the Moon
as well as hundreds of small lunar meteorites that were ejected randomly by asteroid impacts from all over the Moon and ended up on Earth," says Erik Asphaug from Arizona University
"Kamo‘oalewa is kind of a missing link that connects the two."
the event could have implications for what we know about the possibility for life to spread across the Galaxy
Asphaug says the model shows how massive rocks might be thrown from the surface of a planetary body and survive intact
This links into the theory of panspermia
which demonstrates how life – or its ingredients – could be delivered to worlds from other regions across space
:While Kamo'oalewa comes from a lifeless planet
it demonstrates how rocks ejected from Mars could carry life – at least in principle," he says
"The Giordano Bruno impact probably produced tens of hundreds of 10-meter-size ejecta fragments into space," says lead study author Yifei Jiao
a visting scholar at the University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory who is a doctoral student at Tsinghua University in Beijing
"While most of that debris would have impacted the Earth as lunar meteorites over the course of less than a million years," he said
"a few lucky objects can survive in heliocentric orbits as near-Earth asteroids

08/01/2025 - The Hungarian filmmaker’s upcoming movie will be co-produced by the French-German network alongside works by French director Vincent Le Port and Brazil’s Wesley Rodrigues
the feature will commence filming in autumn 2025
This historical film based on George Marbeck’s book Un crime de braves gens will take us back to 16 August 1870
when a crowd of peasants spend several hours beating and torturing a man before burning him alive
The main individuals responsible for this crime were ordinary people
and it’s their story that the director looks to tell in this tale of two parts
which morphs from a chronicle of peasant life into a tragic criminal trial: "in the context of the Hautefaye tragedy
legitimate popular anger is tinged with sadism and arbitrariness
cowardice is just one of the many understandable forms of fear
and the reason of State reveals itself to be just as cruel and barbaric as a moment’s madness."
with the final product scheduled for completion by spring 2028
Arte France Cinéma are also supporting upcoming films by Joachim Trier
Louise Hémon and by the duo composed of Romain Renard and Fursy Teyssier

Half a duck costs $58 while a whole bird will set you back $108
The mod Chinese diner is opened by the folks behind London Fat Duck
but they say the two concepts are different
Following the launch of Hong Kong-style roast duck specialist London Fat Duck at PLQ mall – its sole remaining outlet after previously operating several locations – homegrown F&B group Akashi has hatched another duck-driven concept – this time
Opened in March, Kamo by London Fat Duck is a 52-seat modern Chinese restaurant located at Orchard Rendezvous Hotel
the long-running Japanese grillhouse previously run by the group since 2008
Named after the Japanese word for “duck,” Kamo centres around contemporary Chinese cuisine with duck as the star – served braised
You’ll also find a strong supporting cast of seafood

But not all is lost for fans of beloved robatayaki spot Akanoya: the Akashi Group is actively looking for a new, more intimate space for the restaurant which specialised in Japanese-style charcoal grilled meats and seafood, which closed in November 2024 after 16 years.
Kamo’s 52-seat dining space is similar in size to Akanoya’s previous set-up, but the team had already been toying with the idea of downsizing the robatayaki. “We noticed that diners were gravitating towards more intimate dining experiences,” explains Wesley Goh, 38, head of operations and business development.
Wesley, who started working at his family’s restaurants at 18 and trained under his father, Sam Goh, and uncles – the group’s founders – was part of Akanoya’s R&D team.
His fondest memory of the Japanese restaurant? “The friendly atmosphere. There were so many times when diners who didn’t know each other ended up clubbing together after dinner. Everyone was just having fun.”
Closing Akanoya was “difficult,” he admits, but practical. “We’d been thinking of moving Akanoya to a smaller space for some time. When the concept of Kamo came along and we couldn’t find a good location for it, it made sense to let it take over the space.”
The group spent “around $300K” to set up Kamo, designed to feel stylish yet intimate. Unlike Akanoya’s traditional Japanese wood-accented interiors, Kamo embraces a more modern palette with dusky blue panelled walls, bright vermillion chairs, and golden-edged marble tables.
There’s a private room that seats 12 for intimate gatherings, while the open kitchen and long bar near the entrance showcase house-fermented sauces and pickles. Diners can request counter seating for a front-row view of the action.
Interestingly, Kamo wasn’t initially conceptualised as a London Fat Duck spin-off. The idea took shape organically from a single dish.
“It all began when our chefs created a braised duck recipe that really impressed us,” Wesley shares. “We saw a lot of potential in it and started thinking – why not build something around this?”
That led to R&D trips to China, where the team explored regional Chinese dishes to round out the menu. The result: a contemporary Chinese restaurant with duck in the spotlight, but with enough variety to please most diners — including seafood, meats, and dim sum.
At the moment, there are no plans to expand Kamo as a full-fledged restaurant brand. “We want to keep Kamo as the only outlet, and maybe open a smaller shop or restaurant just for braised duck,” he says.
“We use kombu (Japanese kelp) to add depth and umami to the braising liquid, and Japanese soy sauce for a richer flavour,” explains Wesley. “But it will still taste familiar, like local braised duck, as we also have the classic elements like five spice.”
The sauce leans on the thinner, lighter side. “It lets the richness of the duck come through without feeling heavy,” he adds.
Premium Irish ducks, prized for their higher fat content and tender, juicy meat, are used here — the same kind you’d find at London Fat Duck. “Our techniques help the flavours really penetrate the meat,” says Wesley. The Signature Braised Duck is priced at $58 for half and $108 for a whole duck, with optional toppings like Braised Taupok, Ajitama Egg, and Peanuts at $2 each, and Dashi Congee at $3.
These prices are in the same range as Paradise Teochew, a fine-dining Chinese restaurant known for its own version of braised Irish duck at $55 for half and $108 for whole. While Paradise Teochew leans traditional, Kamo offers a more relaxed experience. “We’re not trying to be fine-dining,” Wesley clarifies. “It’s slightly upscale, but ultimately we want it to be comfortable, with service that’s on par with finer restaurants.

there’s also Wagyu Grade Roast Duck ($53 for half
$98 for full) and London Peking Duck ($78 per portion)
Both are made with the same Irish ducks and recipes used at London Fat Duck
prices here are noticeably higher – by comparison
the roast duck at LFD is priced at $41 for half and $78 for a whole duck
while its Peking duck goes for $53.80 per portion.
Wesley attributes the difference to the elevated experience at Kamo
“Kamo’s setting in a hotel offers a curated dining experience
The elegant decor and hushed surroundings are also factored into the price
there are other costs that make the dishes slightly more expensive
the chefs and service staff are trained to attend to well-heeled customers.”
As for why the braised duck commands a higher price tag than its roasted counterpart
Wesley says it’s due to the cost of the braising liquid
“The concentration of aged Japanese soy and the amount of ingredients we use contribute significantly to the cost.”
“Feedback for the braised duck has been great so far — no comments on the price
but many were happy or impressed,” he adds
duck also features in dishes like Duck Fried Rice (from $18) and Braised Duck Rice Noodle Roll (from $12)
While Kamo’s name and signature braised duck nod to its Japanese inspiration
the rest of the menu ventures beyond.
One example is their Crystal Prawn Dumpling with Clam Sauce ($12 for four)
spherical prawn dumplings nestled in clam shells
“Everyone already has their favourite har gow,” Wesley laughs
“We just wanted to offer something different.”
Other dishes offer luxe takes on familiar Chinese favourites
like the Braised Elephant Fish Fin with Crab Roe ($68) – a sustainable alternative to shark’s fin that still delivers the same gelatinous texture
Even dessert gets an inventive twist: Steamed Orh Nee ($14)
a classic Teochew yam paste made silkier with a drizzle of duck fat for added depth
Kamo by London Fat Duck is at #01-01A, Orchard Rendezvous Hotel, 1 Tanglin Rd, S247905. Open daily noon-3pm & 6-10pm. Tel: 9695 4124. More info via Instagram

the Kamo River stands out as a rare refuge from the crowds choking the rest of the ancient capital
you are guaranteed to see people out enjoying the modest green spaces sandwiching this gentle waterway that cuts through Kyoto’s eastern neighborhoods
it's not unusual to see people out for a jog or walking their dogs along the banks
picnic with friends or even cuddle up with a loved one
You may see a man play his harmonica to a group of waterborne ducks or an eccentric Kyotoite out walking their mongoose (rare
but it happens).googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
groups of people gather around street musicians
There has never been a Saturday in my nine years of living in Kyoto where there wasn’t music
drinking and some form of spontaneous community forming near the waters of the Kamo River
Given the river’s centrality and visibility — slicing from north to south through Kyoto’s eastward districts — its mere presence serves as a natural social magnet
I was able to speak with several groups of people out and about enjoying a sunny afternoon by the river
an Argentine tourist who was walking on the grass by the river when I came across her
we had no idea it was here — we just stumbled on it,” adds Lucia
Overseas tourists seeking advice online on what to do in Kyoto can often find themselves surprised by the Kamo when they arrive
The river and its environs lack the urban polish that comes from months of meetings in a city planning department
so I was surprised to see grass and weeds growing all over the banks and the old buildings,” says Juan
a tourist also from Argentina who is sitting with friends
listening to someone play the guitar by the water
He expresses amusement that the riverbank is not kept in better order given its popularity
a splash of ruggedness in Kyoto’s ancient cityscape
“I come once a month during the summer,” says Lauren
She is sitting by the river enjoying a drink with her friends
It’s the perfect place to go either when you have no specific plans or the restaurants and bars are too crowded and you can’t make a reservation.”
With a name that literally translates to “Wild Duck River,” the Kamo descends from Mount Sajikigatake just north of Kyoto and extends over 31 kilometers southward
but just 10 km or so cuts through the heart of the city
In spring, the banks of the river explode into brilliant whites and delicate pinks as the cherry blossoms emerge. In fall, the oranges, reds and gold of autumn foliage take hold
water levels are low enough to cross the river on stepping stones that span its narrow points
rarely flooding over the banks — hence why many kawayuka (riverside restaurants)
some dating back as far as the 17th century
nightclubs and the trappings of what you would expect to find in a city of 1.45 million aren’t far from the calm Kamo
an atmospheric alleyway full of exclusive establishments and other dining options
with its own bars and eateries adjacent to a gentle stream
where geiko and their maiko apprentices still entertain to this day in members-only teahouses near the river
It’s not just humans who see the Kamo as a refuge — the river is home to a plethora of wildlife
from its namesake ducks to stilt-legged herons that stalk the water for food
diving low when they sense an opportunity to steal a bite
One of the more unique and somewhat terrifying animals that frequent the Kamo is the nutria
these large rodents resemble a cross between a capybara
a rat and a beaver with red-tinted front teeth
especially when there aren’t many people out
and you’ll likely be greeted by one swimming in the gentle current and eating weeds
As the Kamo remains an integral part of Kyoto’s social fabric today
The most famous legend associated with the river comes from the Heian Period (794-1185)
As a previously peaceful Kyoto slid with the rest of the country toward civil war and the nascent class of samurai began to seize power from the city’s aristocrats
is said to have patrolled Gojo Bridge (it now stands in a different location)
dueling samurai and collecting their swords as punishment for their arrogance
Benkei had amassed 999 swords in his collection when
a young samurai (later revealed to be Minamoto no Yoshitsune
one of classic Japanese literature’s great tragic heroes) attempted to cross the bridge
moved by the display of martial prowess from the young samurai
pledged his fealty for the rest of his life
Toyotomi Hideyoshi rebuilt the Sanjo and Gojo bridges in their current locations
attracting many to the riverside to sell their wares
the art of kabuki is thought to have been created in a dry riverbed of the Kamo by entertainer Izumo no Okuni and her all-female acting troupe
the people of Kyoto continued to gather at the river to witness various festivals
the most famous of which was the Gion Matsuri
the Kamo played a special role — having carried mikoshi (portable Shinto shrines) from places of worship across Kyoto
priests would then dip ritual wands into the river’s flow before sprinkling the mikoshi with its pure waters
The crowds became so great for these mikoshi arai (ritual washing of the shrines) that teahouses had to limit the amount of patrons they let sit by the river
yuka (wooden platforms elevated on bamboo pillars) were set up below the river’s bridges as summertime cool-off spots
The area below the Sanjo Bridge was particularly popular
Not that any of that history is top of mind for most people looking for a few quiet moments next to the Kamo’s lazy current — especially mid-20s Japanese couple Ryotaro and Yukina
who moved from Shizuoka to Kyoto earlier this year

Journalist Miriama Kamo has covered some of the nation’s biggest stories
Miriama joined TVNZ in 2002 as a reporter and news anchor
But there was one story Miriama never expected to tell and that was the demise of the long-form current affairs programme that had been her home for more than 20 years
“We’d all heard whispers, but we weren’t overly worried because Sunday was high-rating with a dedicated audience and it still made money
so we were blindsided when it was announced,” tells Miriama
That grief then played out for the nation during the final broadcast on May 14 last year
when newsroom staff gave the Sunday team a guard of honour as they left the studio for the last time
but there is still grief and not just for the people who lost their jobs
but for society – that something as important as long-form journalism should struggle like this
because we need checks and balances to ensure a strong democracy.”
But Miriama isn’t one to mope
and with husband Mike Dreaver and kids Sam
she’s taking this opportunity to consider her future
“My biggest motivation is asking how can I serve
I’m passionate about environmental issues and on New Year’s Eve 2018
I took up a month-long ZeroWaste challenge.”
Miriama has even been sharing her sustainability journey on social media, although she confesses she didn’t expect the ZeroWaste journey to last
“I thought it’d be something I’d be happy to stop doing
but it really opened my eyes,” she reflects
“Once you realise you’re responsible for everything you buy or obtain – even after it’s moved out of your life – it really makes you think twice before purchasing things
‘Do I need this new thing?’ And if the answer is yes
Miriama ponders whether she’s bought brand new of late. “Maybe sheets? And I use our old ones as gift wrap. Actually, Anika Moa did laugh when she heard this and asked what about undies
Fans will be relieved Miriama still has TV in her sights
which it turns out I’m quite good at even though I’ve no idea what I’m doing
I’ve started a production company with friends
from documentaries to current affairs and entertainment
some of those ideas will come to fruition.”
Miriama says her sense of self has changed over the years
“If you’d asked me that 10 or 15 years ago, I might have said I’m fearful of job loss, but the ZeroWaste movement has really helped
So even if it’s just unpaid social media posts
I know I’m still contributing to an important issue – the environment – because there’s always something I can do that makes a difference.”
Miriama makes it clear she hasn’t suffered like so many others in Aotearoa
I did another full immersion te reo Māori course
She also champions the reo through Kotahi Rau Pukapuka (KRP), which aims to translate 100 books from Harry Potter to The Alchemist
“We want people to read in te reo Māori for joy
and we have an awesome range of stories in the pipeline,” she says
On the subject of books, Miriama is looking forward to this month’s HamLit, a new literary festival that’s part of Hamilton Arts Festival/Toi Ora Ki Kirikiriroa
“I can’t wait to meet the authors,” she enthuses
“Michelle Rahurahu’s book Poorhara blew me away
And Airana Ngārewa [The Bone Tree] will talk about his new book Pātea Boys
I read their books while camping over summer and they offer intelligent commentary on Māori identity and colonisation
and on how Māori succeed – or don’t – in a system that wasn’t built for us.”
“I’m so fortunate to have had a 22-year career at TVNZ,” she muses
“It probably won’t be replicated for anyone else because the landscape has changed so dramatically
but there is always goodness to be found.”
HamLit takes place in the Hamilton Gardens on February 22 and 23. For more info, visit hamiltonartsfestival.co.nz/hamlit
'The team have nailed it – it’s a strategy that everyone can understand.'
The family of a 23-year-old Marshallese man who was killed by police after allegedly holding a knife to a toddler in 2022 may soon receive a settlement of $250,000 from the city of Spokane
avoiding a lengthy and potentially costly civil trial
Peterson Kamo’s family filed a tort claim in September of that year
claiming that officers did not take enough time to understand the situation that January day before advancing and shooting him six times while he held his 2-year-old nephew
and they’re relieved the city is cooperating and that they were able to get this resolved without going through formal litigation,” said attorney Bill Gilbert
At least two council members believe the city should not settle and intend to vote against the payment
arguing that officers acted properly to save the life of a toddler they believed Kamo was threatening to harm or kill
Settling sends the wrong message to the police department
argues council members Jonathan Bingle and Michael Cathcart
potentially making officers hesitate to act promptly in an urgent situation
“They need to know the city’s got their back,” Bingle said
The settlement resolution was first introduced Monday at a council committee
but has not been officially scheduled for a vote
The settlement being proposed is relatively small compared to some that the city and neighboring jurisdictions have paid out in other cases involving someone dying after being shot by police
around when the Kamos filed their tort claim against the city
Spokane and its insurers agreed to pay $4 million as part of a legal settlement with the family of David Novak
shouting racial slurs at them and shooting a gun toward their home
Spokane County paid $1 million to the family of Ethan Murry
who was shot and killed by a Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy in 2019
Then-Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich strongly disagreed with the settlement and defended his deputies
The amount being considered as payment to the Kamo family more closely matches the $275,000 settlement that the city of Spokane agreed to pay a woman three years after she said she slipped into a downtown grate covering tree roots and suffered serious injuries
when officers responded after a caller told dispatchers that their neighbor
came to her door crying and saying her son was dead
It was later verified that Peterson Kamo’s brother
had died a week prior due to a medical condition
Peterson Kamo was the only one at home at the time who spoke fluent English
Body camera footage showed Officer Corrigan Mohondro arrived at the scene and walked up to the home with Sgt
“My son (unintelligible) the baby and he said he’s going to kill the baby and himself,” she said
according to the statement he gave to investigators
he saw Kamo holding a knife to the 2-year-old’s throat
“I saw him suddenly raise a knife from down at his side and point it toward the child and start yelling,” Mohondro wrote
Mohondro said he saw Kamo pick up a can of Coleman camping fuel as he went up the stairs
“Why are you trying to shoot me?” Kamo said
I got nothing on me,” Kamo said as he holds one hand over the landing
you had a knife pointed at the baby,” Mohondro replied
“I got no knife pointed at him,” Kamo said
Officers said they saw Kamo poured fuel from the can onto the carpet and believed he was going to light it on fire
Mohondro and Lynch moved up the stairs toward Kamo
a knife can be seen in Kamo’s hand close to the toddler
“I could clearly see a silver knife in the male’s right hand,” Lynch wrote in his statement to investigators
“The knife was pointed up like he was getting ready to strike at any moment.”
Prosecutors decided not to charge the officers who shot and killed Kamo
stating that Mohondro and Lynch were justified in their use of deadly force due to their concerns for the safety of the toddler
Peterson Kamo was shot four times in the left side of his back and twice in his midback
indicating Kamo was facing away from the officer
Officers did not spend much time talking with the family before rushing into the house
which the family said led police to misjudge the situation

BusinessGoldman Partner and M&A Banker David Kamo Exits to Join EvercoreBy Gillian TanPublished: August 09, 2024 at 7:49AM EDT
(Bloomberg) -- David Kamo, a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. partner and global co-head of financial-sponsor mergers and acquisitions, left the firm for a role at Evercore Inc., according to people with knowledge of the matter.
Kamo is set to join New York-based Evercore as a senior managing director after a period of gardening leave, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing information that isn’t public.
Representatives for Goldman and Evercore declined to comment.
Kamo, who was named partner in 2020, joined New York-based Goldman in 2016, according to Financial Industry Regulatory Authority records. He previously worked at Credit Suisse, Barclays Plc and Lehman Brothers, parts of which Barclays acquired out of bankruptcy.
Former JPMorgan Chase & Co. banker Haidee Lee recently joined Goldman as global co-head of sponsor M&A, alongside Kamo.

Kamo Volunteer Fire Brigade has been repeatedly targeted by what is believed to be an alleged serial offender
A Whangārei volunteer fire brigade has had its station windows smashed not once but five times
Chief fire officer Barry Lapsley said the incidents at the Kamo Volunteer Brigade were wasting the time and energy of people there to serve the community
when a man was captured on CCTV about 7am wearing a dark hoodie
He was armed with what appeared to be a round spanner and was seen on CCTV smashing bathroom windows at the front of the station
Previous incidents had also shown an individual on CCTV smashing the side door window
the front window of the watch room and the bathroom window
The offender sometimes arrived armed with tools
they have never tried to enter the station
But it was a small comfort considering the inconvenience caused
The fifth attack this year was the final straw for the brigade
which took to social media on Sunday to appeal for public help in finding the person responsible
While the post garnered attention from far and wide
Lapsley and the Kamo volunteers were at a loss as to why they were being targeted
the station had attended 372 calls in the past calendar year
372 times we’ve responded to the needs of the community without these unnecessary interruptions.”
We just try to keep the noise down to a minimum in the middle of the night so as not to interrupt the neighbours.”
Securing the station was an inconvenience each time it has happened
“We can’t understand why somebody would target a group of people that are here to assist our local community and go out of their way to turn up in the middle of the night or whatever to meet those needs
Police want anyone with information about the incidents or who may have seen suspicious activity outside the Kamo Fire Station to contact 105

Visitors are encouraged to help identify people in the photographs
Police initially said on Monday the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in Te Kamo were unexplained and required further investigation
Police are not treating the death of a man at a Whangārei property as suspicious
Detective Senior Sergeant Michelle Harris, of Whangārei Criminal Investigation Branch
said police were called to an Eden Tce property in Te Kamo about 3.45pm on Sunday
Harris initially said on Monday the circumstances of the man’s death were not clear and required further inquiries
police have put a scene guard in place on Eden Tce so a scene examination can be carried out today.”
A post-mortem examination would also be completed in due course

is one of a small number of known quasi-satellites of Earth; it transitions between quasi-satellite and horseshoe orbital states on centennial timescales
The similarity of its reflectance spectrum to lunar silicates and its Earth-like orbit both suggest that it originated from the lunar surface
Here we carry out numerical simulations of the dynamical evolution of particles launched from different locations on the lunar surface with a range of ejection velocities in order to assess the hypothesis that Kamo‘oalewa originated as a debris-fragment from a meteoroidal impact with the lunar surface
As these ejecta escape the Earth-Moon environment
they face a dynamical barrier for entry into Earth’s co-orbital space
a small fraction of launch conditions yields outcomes that are compatible with Kamo‘oalewa’s orbit
The most favored conditions are launch velocities slightly above the escape velocity from the trailing lunar hemisphere
a The two classes of co-orbitals considered in this work: horseshoe companions oscillate about the L3 Lagrange point
diametrically opposite the planet’s location
and encompass both L4 and L5 Lagrange points; and quasi-satellites orbit outside the planet’s Hill sphere and enclose both the collinear L1 and L2 Lagrange points

c Kamo`oalewa’s semi-major axis a and relative mean longitude Δλ = λ − λEarth as a function of time
while quasi-satellite motion is shown in green

The unit vector \(\hat{r}\) defines the direction pointing towards Earth and \(\hat{t}\) the transversal direction
As in previous numerical investigations of lunar ejecta, a variety of dynamical behaviors were found as particles entered heliocentric orbits. In order to depict the global results graphically, we projected the orbital evolution of the particles onto the semi-major axis–eccentricity plane, as shown in Fig. 3.
a Orbital evolution for 5,000 years of 14,800 lunar ejecta particles
b The evolution of Kamo`oalewa and four different Kamo`oalewa-like (KL’s) cases are highlighted on a zoomed-in portion of the diagram
The cadence of the non-co-orbital trajectories is downsampled (one point per 250 years) for legibility of the plots
This is the co-orbital region where we find the current orbit of Kamo‘oalewa and other HS–QS co-orbital NEAs
The evident well-defined boundaries of this region show that there is a dynamical barrier between lunar ejecta and co-orbital states but the finding of some outcomes in this region indicates that the barrier is somewhat porous
allowing a small fraction of lunar ejecta to evolve into and remain in co-orbital states for varying periods of time
The trailing side produced the most co-orbiters (both HS and QS)
and next by near side and far side which produced similar statistics
a, b Each point represents a launch condition: one of four launch locations (near-side, far-side, leading side, and trailing side), and the launch velocity (decomposed into its radial and tangential components). See Fig. 2 for an illustration of the launch locations and launch velocity component directions
The points in red highlight those launch conditions that result in a HS state while the points in dark blue correspond to detected HS–QS transitions during the 5000 years of simulation time

b Each point represents a launch condition: the radial and tangential components of the launch velocity and one of four representative locations on the lunar surface (near-side
Points in red indicate collisions with the Moon
points in blue indicate collisions with Earth
c Histogram of the frequencies of collisions with respect to the launch speed
being concentrated at the lower speeds from near
accounts for the low frequency of co-orbital outcomes under these conditions
as a particle that may have reached such a state would have collided before it could enter into a co-orbital state

The HS-QS oscillations persist for up to 4500 years (not shown)
HS states appear in violet and QS states in green
HS states appear in blue and QS states in yellow
The orbital evolution was obtained with numerical propagation under the same model
Additional exploration of the orbital evolution of lunar ejecta is also warranted
Our numerical investigations reported here were limited in a number of ways
so it is useful to list some future directions of investigation
we identified the most-favorable launch velocities of lunar ejecta for Kamo‘oalewa-like outcomes for initial conditions of the Solar System taken near the present epoch
Although in the Section “Numerical model” we invoked the Copernican principle that the present epoch is not “special," we do recognize that our results may have some sensitivity to the initial epoch
The most important limitation is due to Earth’s orbital eccentricity
which is time variable and undergoes excursions up to five times its current value on timescales of \({{{{{{{\mathcal{O}}}}}}}}(1{0}^{6})\) years
Earth’s orbital velocity varies by ~2 km s−1
an amount that is comparable to (or a significant fraction of) the launch velocities of escaping lunar ejecta
this could influence the frequency of the co-orbital outcomes of escaping lunar ejecta
sampling initial epochs when Earth’s eccentricity is different is needed to understand more comprehensively the statistics of co-orbital outcomes of lunar ejecta
Sensitivity to epoch could also arise from lunar phase at launch (because the relative magnitude of solar perturbations on escaping lunar ejecta particles at full moon versus new moon phase is also a significant fraction of the lunar orbital velocity) and from the perturbations of Jupiter and other planets that would be slightly different at different epochs
The complex and non-linear nature of the calculations performed leads to a large sensitivity to several conditions
initial conditions for objects in the Solar System were gathered from the JPL Horizons service
where masses and orbital elements are subject to updates and refinements
Further inconveniences arise from the fact that the orbital fates are classified based on visual inspection of 5000 year of orbital evolution of more than 10,000 simulated particles
Different results may also arise if the initial integration time of 5000 years is modified
in a small minority (6.6%) of cases we detected the existence of pathways leading to co-orbital states
but also those resembling Kamo’oalewa’s; the latter exhibit persistent transitions between quasi-satellite and horseshoe orbits
These minority outcome events have not been previously reported
The existence of these outcomes lends credence to the hypothesis that Kamo‘oalewa could indeed be lunar ejecta
The launch conditions most favored for such an outcome are those with launch velocities slightly above the lunar escape velocity and launch locations from the Moon’s trailing side
We also find that Kamo’oalewa’s inclination may have been boosted by close approaches with the Earth during its horseshoe state
We begin with the observation that particles originating in the Earth-Moon (EM) system that escape and evolve into Earth-like heliocentric orbits
including co-orbital states such as horseshoe and quasi-satellite types
would be those that escape with low relative velocity with respect to the EM barycenter
Here we make some estimates of the dynamical conditions of launch from the lunar surface that would favor outcomes with Earth-like heliocentric orbits
we will take the Earth’s Hill sphere as the approximate boundary between geocentric and heliocentric space
and the lunar Hill sphere as the approximate boundary between selenocentric and geocentric space
The radius of the lunar Hill sphere is ~35 lunar radii:
and Earth’s Hill sphere radius is ~1% of Earth’s heliocentric orbit radius:
are the lunar orbit radius and Earth’s heliocentric orbit radius
respectively (both approximated as circular orbits)
We denote with vL the launch velocity of a particle launched from the Moon’s surface; this is relative to the lunar barycenter
Particles launched with vL exceeding the Moon’s escape speed
will reach the lunar Hill sphere boundary with a residual speed δvL relative to the lunar barycenter
The magnitude of this residual velocity is estimated from the equation for conservation of energy in the lunar gravitational field
we observe that for a particle launched with
the residual velocity at the lunar Hill sphere radius is δvL ≈ 0.4 km s−1
The velocity of an escaping lunar ejecta particle relative to the Earth-Moon barycenter
is found by adding (vectorially) the residual velocity δvL to the lunar orbital velocity
The Moon’s orbital velocity about the Earth-Moon barycenter is km s−1. To escape from the Earth-Moon system, the magnitude of vEM must exceed km s−1. From Eq. (4)
we see that this requires that δvL must exceed 0.4 km s−1
This minimum value is coincidentally the same as the residual velocity at the lunar Hill sphere of lunar ejecta launched with just-the lunar escape speed
this requirement implies a launch velocity vL > 3.4 km s−1
Ejecta from other locations and different launch directions will require a minimum launch speed in the range 2.4–3.4 km s−1 in order to leave the Earth-Moon Hill sphere
the initial location of an escaping lunar ejecta particle is approximately at one lunar orbit distance
and its velocity is vEM relative to the Earth-Moon barycenter
The ejecta will reach the Earth-Moon Hill sphere boundary with a residual velocity
relative to the Earth-Moon barycenter given by the energy conservation equation in geocentric space
Taking vEM = 1.4 km s−1 (the minimum required to achieve escape from geocentric space)
escaping lunar ejecta will enter heliocentric space with a residual velocity (relative to the Earth-Moon barycenter) of δvEM = 0.7 km s−1
Particles having δvEM close to this minimum value will enter heliocentric space with the most Earth-like orbits
and would be good candidates for entering co-orbital states such as the horse-shoe or quasi-satellite orbits
The above estimates are based on patching together three different point-mass
For the purposes of these simple estimates
we have also ignored the effect of the Moon’s rotation on the launch velocities of particles as well as the eccentricity of the lunar orbit and of Earth’s heliocentric orbit
the orbital evolution of escaping lunar ejecta particles that enter Earth-like heliocentric orbits is subject to strongly chaotic dynamics and is exceedingly sensitive to initial conditions
as is well known in the three-body problem
hence the need for the numerical approach that follows below
These theoretical estimates provide a guide for the initial conditions of the lunar ejecta that are to be explored with numerical simulations and a guide for the analysis of the results
The length of the main set of simulations was 5000 years; this is sufficiently long to explore the details of possible co-orbital outcomes as a first study of the proof-of-concept for the lunar-ejecta hypothesis for the origin of Kamo‘oalewa
we extended the simulation time up to 100,000 years for those particles exhibiting Kamo‘oalewa-like dynamical behavior
Running these simulations for much larger time spans is computationally prohibitive because
in order to detect the QS and HS dynamical states and transitions between such co-orbital configurations
it is necessary to have high cadence outputs (~1 output per year); this places high demands on data storage
and is not unrepresentative of lunar ejecta launch conditions at any random time in the geologically recent past
This assumption can be tested in the future by exploring different initial epochs that sample different initial conditions of the planets—especially of Earth’s eccentricity—on secular timescales
discouraging the exploration of larger values of vL
Following the guidance from the Section “Theoretical estimates”, four launch sites were sampled on the Moon’s surface. These four sites are representative of each of the four hemispheres of the Moon: the near-side, far-side, leading side, and trailing side. The locations of these are shown in Fig. 2
the launch speed was varied systematically from 2.4 to 6.0 km s−1 (in increments of 0.1 km s−1)
100 particles were launched with different angles θ2 (uniformly chosen along −90∘ and 90∘)
we monitored for collisions with all the massive bodies
we visually examined the time series of a and Δλ
Rather than examining the time series of all launched particles
this task is made easier by first projecting the evolution in the (a
e) plane and identifying those particles that appear in a rather sparsely populated
narrow vertical zone in the semi-major axis range 0.98 − 1.02 au
as explained further in the “Results” section

NZME has launched On The Up – a national campaign showcasing amazing stories of inspiration
a respected and loved teacher who last week celebrated 40 years teaching at Te Kamo High School
When Alan Bayly walks through the bustling courtyard of Te Kamo High School between bells
students greet him with fist bumps and smiles
“That girl drew me a picture the other day,” he pointed out after yet another eager wave
The grin that was plastered on his face was probably the biggest sign of why he has been teaching at the school for so long
Bayly celebrated 40 years of teaching at the kura in April
he has been there longer than most of the buildings
and he was teaching children and grandchildren of former students
The $22m upgrade the school is undergoing was another example of the constant change Bayly has long endured
He moved to Northland aged 22 after graduating from Massey University and his first practical teaching experience at Auckland Grammar School
Bayly remembered Te Kamo High School’s first computer
“It sat in the library like a shrine,” he laughed
which felt like home as he came from a farming background
Bayly’s Taranaki roots meant it was not unusual for students to see the teacher in shorts and a polo top during winter back in the day
“I ended up here in Northland because they told me it was warm and didn’t rain
“I think it rained from Easter through to Labour Weekend that first year,” Bayly said
From the moment he stepped foot in Te Tai Tokerau
He coached and played for the Kamo Rugby Club
joined the local church and Surf Life Saving Club at Waipu Cove
He even met his wife through the surf club
and one of their first dates was the school ball
Despite Bayly’s extensive community involvement
it was probably within the walls of Te Kamo High School where he made the biggest difference to people’s lives
The best moment for him was when a student “gets it”
What kept Bayly teaching was the constant change of students and staff
who brought fresh ideas and new perspectives
and whether you necessarily agree with things or not
The Young Enterprise programme was a highlight for him
His classroom had often served as an incubator of big ideas
Well-known local businesses, such as Active Attitude
“You get parents that have said my child has never talked about school
and now they come home every day and talk about it,” Bayly said
He was also involved in writing the first Financial Literacy Unit Standards for NZQA that have been used in schools and institutes countrywide
was once a student of her dad’s in Year 13
She recalled how once he had a stack of chairs on top of desks and climbed on top to visually demonstrate hierarchy
Sweeney had posted on Facebook asking for people to comment on their favourite memories of the famed “Mr Bayly”
What followed were hundreds of comments and private messages
outlining little to big moments that made a difference in students’ lives
She printed off every single comment and put them on a wall in the staff room in celebration of his 40 years
“All the feedback was very much that he made sure every student could understand it
and taught in a way that every student was able to learn and grow,” Sweeney said
Many students were grateful that Bayly’s class had been a safe space where they could be themselves
Bayly said it was truly humbling to see the impact he had made
“I’m so honoured to be part of people’s journeys.”’

Among the nearly 30,000 known near-Earth asteroids (NEAs)
only tens possess Earth co-orbital characteristics with semi-major axes ~1 au
an upcoming target of China’s Tianwen-2 asteroid sampling mission
exhibits a meta-stable 1:1 mean-motion resonance with Earth
recent ground-based observations show that Kamo‘oalewa has spectroscopic characteristics similar to space-weathered lunar silicates
hinting at a lunar origin instead of an asteroidal one like the vast majority of NEAs
Here we use numerical simulations to demonstrate that Kamo‘oalewa’s physical and orbital properties are compatible with a fragment from a crater larger than 10–20 km formed on the Moon in the last few million years
The impact could have ejected sufficiently large fragments into heliocentric orbits
some of which could be transferred to Earth 1:1 resonance and persist today
This leads us to suggest the young lunar crater Giordano Bruno (22 km diameter
linking a specific asteroid in space to its source crater on the Moon
The hypothesis will be tested by the Tianwen-2 mission when it returns a sample of Kamo‘oalewa
And the upcoming NEO Surveyor mission may help us to identify such a lunar-derived NEA population

By Serena Solomon of RNZ
Miriama Kamo was a 28-year-old journalist in her dream job. She had a visa to move to London but an offer came through in 2002 to work on a new TVNZ current affairs show called Sunday
But the role and working for TVNZ was far from perfect
Stories that didn’t associate Māori with crime or imprisonment didn’t get greenlit
“I could not get a good Māori news story across the line,” Kamo told Anika Moa on the latest episode of the RNZ podcast It’s Personal
“I am going through a little bit of trauma about that at the moment because I am finally able to consider it and what it was like,” she said
Kamo worked for Sunday as a reporter and host for 22 years before it was axed by the network earlier this year. She continued to host Marae, the Māori current affairs programme on TVNZ. Kamo is also a children’s author and passionate zero-waste advocate
Even before Sunday was cancelled, Kamo took a step back from her role on the show at the start of the year to better her te reo Māori
She grew up in a Christchurch home that was immersed in Māori culture and activism
speaking te reo fluently has so far eluded her
Kamo described herself as a “militant Māori teen” when it came to activism
Her school offered her the position of deputy head student
She declined it because there was a pattern of offering the head student role to Pākehā students and deputy position to Māori
“I won’t play second fiddle because that puts Māori in a lesser place,” she said
Following university and a stint hosting a kids show
she wanted to position herself as a journalist who is Māori rather than a Māori journalist
Part of that was to do a good job in the “dog eat dog” culture at TVNZ and across all news media
I wanted to just fight for things in general
not have to come in here and feel like I need to keep fighting for things Māori,” said Kamo
“but that was so sad when I think back to that.”
A pivot occurred after she was “rightly confronted” about her approach after speaking at a marae in Rotorua several years ago
Then there was also the incident when former broadcaster and Labour MP Willie Jackson accused Kamo and other prominent journalists of being Māori in face only and lacking a “Māori perspective”
Kamo hasn’t escaped those earlier years of brushing off racial discrimination at TVNZ
you were on your own and trying to survive’.”
Not being Māori enough is something Kamo has felt before – when she moved to Auckland
was involved in kapa haka and was influenced by her parents’ activism as prison chaplains
which was more common in Auckland due to the prevalence of kōhanga early learning centres
Kamo continues to educate about how to take a zero waste approach to life
She is a patron of the New Zealander of the Year and is a trustee for Kotahi Rau Pukapuka
an organisation that publishes books in te reo
“I will admit that it hasn’t been the last thing on my mind,” she said

the Hungarian filmmaker will shoot a film about the friendship between Simon Arshaki Ter-Petrosyan and the man who would go on to become Joseph Stalin
Hungarian filmmaker Kornél Mundruczó will shoot his ninth feature
a Georgian-language film titled The Revolution According to Kamo
boasting an original screenplay by Pawel Pawlikowski and Ben Hopkins
which has been adapted by Kata Weber (who has collaborated with Mundruczó on his last four films)
The story of The Revolution According to Kamo spans 30 years
and paints the portrait of the birth of the world’s most murderous dictator through the eyes of his best friend
The two grew up together in the small town of Gori
and Kamo as part of a wealthy merchant family
Although Soso leaves Gori to attend a seminary
the two are reunited in their late teens in Tiflis (modern-day Tbilisi)
where the charismatic Soso has become an agitator and leader in the new revolutionary movement to bring down the monarchy
Kamo is dragged alongside Soso into a world of gangland violence
but it also sits firmly in the gangster-movie genre,” said Mundruczo
but about the mechanics of power and how one man rises to the top
But it’s also about a passionate friendship between these two men who knew each other since they were boys.”
“I was attracted to the script not only because I had never worked on an epic story of this scale before
but also because we see one of the most brutal periods in history from the perspective of a true friend and comrade,” adds Kata Weber
the story presents a unique perspective in which we can see how power structures can corrupt even the purest of emotions
sacrifice and betrayal alongside the criminal history of a revolutionary movement that may be unfamiliar to many.”

Sometimes even first responders need a helping hand
When Kevin Orduno, a line supervisor at KAMO Power
set out for work in the early morning of a frigid January day
he knew an icy blanket across southwest Missouri would make driving treacherous
That was especially true when he found an ambulance from the Taney County Ambulance District responding to a call
but stuck precariously in a steep ditch along the side of State Highway MM near the crossroads community of Mildred
“I kind of slowed down and tried not to hit them and asked them if they were OK,” Orduno said
The driver explained he already had requested a backup emergency vehicle
visited with another utilities supervisor and figured he would wait around
passed the first and then slid off a corner into the ditch
What occurred next was not taught in lineworker school
Recognizing he represented the ambulance’s only immediate hope for rescue
Orduno asked for permission to pull the second vehicle back onto the road since it was more accessible than the first
Even the salt trucks were getting stuck,” Orduno said
if you could; we’re still trying to get to a call down the road.’”
weighed 16,500 pounds and was about 10 feet high
public information office for the Taney County Ambulance District
Orduno backed his KAMO Power truck into a neighboring driveway and used the front winch to slowly bring the ambulance back on to the icy
“It actually took a lot longer than it should because I didn’t have enough cable
so I had to use five different ratchet straps and almost had to empty my truck of equipment,” Orduno said
“I had to get myself in a spot where I didn’t get hurt or cause problems for my truck.”
Orduno thought retrieving the first ambulance was too risky
the personnel were able to proceed to their emergency call
“I have worked for TCAD paramedics for over 20 years
Although we have had people help us on various scenes
never have we had someone go above and beyond to the level that Kevin did that day,” Tudor said
“This good Samaritan made a significant difference in that patient’s life.”
Orduno received recognition on a local TV newscast
and KAMO Power CEO Ted Hilmes said the cooperative is immensely proud of his quick response
“Kevin went to extra lengths to provide help at a time when it was badly needed,” Hilmes said
Oklahoma-based G&T has a significant presence in Missouri
supplying power to eight cooperatives there
“We all live in a rural area and grew up playing on the ice
but there’s just no real training for it other than real-world experience,” said Orduno

The lunar crater Giordano Bruno may have been the home of Earth's Kamo’oaelewa quasi-moon
An artist impression of Earth quasi-satellite Kamo`oalewa near the Earth-Moon system
An illustration of NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test,or DART
as it approaches its target moonlet around the asteroid Didymos
we used all known information regarding this Kamo‘oalewa and the lunar surface to derive a scenario for the origin of this object
starting from the impact that produced the Giordano Bruno crater."
Earth's "quasi-moon" was likely blasted away from the actual moon relatively recently in the solar system's history
Where exactly on the moon did it come from
Related: A 'quasi-moon' asteroid companion of Earth may actually be a moon relic
starting from the impact that produced the Giordano Bruno crater," Michel said
The team connected Kamo‘oalewa with the Giordano Bruno crater by working like crime scene investigators. They used a computer model to mimic the type of impact that would have produced a space rock like this quasi-moon.
That meant factoring in things like the size and velocity distributions of the resulting ejecta and their dynamical evolution. This reconstruction demonstrated that some ejecta would eventually get into an orbital 1:1 resonance with Earth
with the same dynamical properties as Kamo’oalewa
"Our results tell us that Kamo’oalewa is very likely to be a fragment from the lunar surface for which we have a direct relation to a known crater if our scenario is correct," Michel said.
"Usually, the best we can do is to determine the source region in the asteroid belt of a NEO, knowing its current orbit. A region is usually very wide in these kinds of estimates, such as the inner or outer asteroid belt," he added
we identified a very specific body and location where this object comes from
Michel explained that Kamo’oalewa’s orbit is not stable
leading the team to link it to a crater that is not too old
possibly with an age between one and 10 million years.
"Then we also needed the crater to be not too large
so that an intact fragment of the size of Kamo’oaelewa can be produced," he continued
"The best candidate was then Giordano Bruno
The team's impact modeling also gave them an idea of the size of the space projectile that would have created the nearly 14-mile-wide lunar crater and its quasi-moon ejecta
They estimated that the asteroid that struck the moon must have had a width of around 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) to carve out the Giordano Bruno crater and liberate Kamo’oalewa.
If an asteroid of such a size were to hit Earth
it would release roughly the same amount of energy as the detonation of a one-million-megaton bomb
Related: How we could deflect killer asteroids away from Earth
The findings also have ramifications for our understanding of the NEO population around Earth
implying that a larger proportion of these bodies than suspected could have been created by impacts on the moon or upon other solar system bodies
"Although the majority of NEOs come from the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter
a small portion can originate from the moon or other locations," Michel said
"When there is something unusual and when a lunar origin seems possible
then we now know that we can check whether a fragment from the moon can lead to the orbit of the considered object and possibly identify the crater where it comes from
Michel added that the discovery that Giordano Bruno crater and the NEO Kamo’oalewa are likely linked is a stark reminder that, even in this later, calmer epoch of the solar system's 4.6-billion-year history
impacts by massive space rocks happen.
This stresses the importance of planetary defense projects such as NASA's recent Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART)

Metrics details
Little is known about Earth quasi-satellites
a class of near-Earth small solar system bodies that orbit the sun but remain close to the Earth
because they are faint and difficult to observe
Here we use the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) and the Lowell Discovery Telescope (LDT) to conduct a comprehensive physical characterization of quasi-satellite (469219) Kamoʻoalewa and assess its affinity with other groups of near-Earth objects
We find that (469219) Kamoʻoalewa rotates with a period of 28.3 (+1.8/−1.3) minutes and displays a reddened reflectance spectrum from 0.4–2.2 microns
This spectrum is indicative of a silicate-based composition
but with reddening beyond what is typically seen amongst asteroids in the inner solar system
We compare the spectrum to those of several material analogs and conclude that the best match is with lunar-like silicates
This interpretation implies extensive space weathering and raises the prospect that Kamo’oalewa could comprise lunar material
Follow-up broadband photometry was collected on UT 18 April 2017 at LDT in the VR filter using the Large Monolithic Imager15
The goal of these observations was to collect high signal-to-noise ratio data
which combined with the LBT observations provided a longer baseline in time to derive the object’s rotational lightcurve and so improve the period determination
The lightcurve is shown with photometric uncertainties (random error) as the error bars
The steeply red-sloped spectrum we observe is consistent with a highly space-weathered silicate surface
The gray shaded region indicates wavelengths with time-variable telluric features that can introduce artifacts in the data
Spectra were normalized to unity at 0.7 µm
The error bars shown for the spectrum are the photometric uncertainties at the spectral resolution as shown
The error bars for the zJHK colors represent the errors in the color ratio measurements (independent measurements were made of z/H
The spectral slope of Kamoʻoalewa is even redder than the slope of these objects
Reddening of spectral slope can be due to a range of factors including phase angle (Sun-Target-Observer angle)
particle size of the regolith (increasing grain size causes bluer spectral slope)
metal content (increasing metal causes redder spectral slope)
and lunar-style space weathering (increasing space weathering causes redder spectral slope and weaker absorption bands)
The grain size of the regolith also influences spectral slope and band depth
the band depth and spectral slope decrease (becoming blue-sloped) as grain size approaches millimeters to centimeters
but the spectral slope is red—not blue as would be expected from grain size effects alone
grain size effects are insufficient to reconcile the observed spectral properties of Kamoʻoalewa with that of a typical S-type composition (a more neutral reflectance spectrum)
Our measured spectral slope for Kamoʻoalewa (green shaded region lies outside the typical range of 99.8% of the 470 S- and L-complex asteroids from the distribution shown in blue)
This approach uses only one source of meteoritic metal for comparison
but we note that the spectrum of the Gibeon sample we use is iron-rich
and hence among the reddest possible analogs amongst meteoritic metal sources
When mixed with spectrally neutral silicates to fit the 1.0-micron band
we conclude generally that mixtures of meteoritic metal with unweathered silicates do not provide a suitable match to Kamoʻoalewa’s spectrum
The spectrum of this rock traces closely with Apollo sample 14163 at wavelengths < 1.75 microns
but rolls over to neutral reflectance from 1.75 to 2.5 microns
Adopting a range of albedos from 0.10 to 0.16 provides an effective diameter for Kamoʻoalewa (H = 24.3mag) in the range from D = 58–46 m
Direct measurements of Kamoʻoalewa’s albedo (or size) coupled with knowledge of the grain size distribution of its surface would therefore play a useful role in discriminating between compositional hypotheses
data provided by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s HORIZONS on-line solar system data and ephemeris computation service; retrieved July 3
Data collected using the twin MODS instrument (one per mirror) on LBT used an exposure time of 120 s for all images
which were taken using Sloan i’ and z’ filters
and exposure times of 900 s for the spectral frames
The G2V star HIP 52192 was used as the solar analog to convert raw spectral fluxes to reflectance
We find that the observations are well described by a double-peaked lightcurve with asymmetric minima
corresponding to a rotational period twice that of the single-peaked solution shown in the periodogram
and solid lines plotted on the periodogram indicate confidence intervals of 99.9%
illustrating the effects of noise from telluric absorption features in our observing mode
Photometric errors are plotted but are not visible at this scale for this bright calibration target

the target of China’s upcoming Tianwen-2 mission
likely was blasted from the Giordano Bruno crater on the far side of the moon
as seen here by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter
Selected as the target of China’s Tianwen-2 mission
Kamo'oalewa has been in space for several million years as one of a few of Earth’s co-orbital asteroids
meaning it travels around the sun on a similar orbit as Earth
Measuring between 150 and 190 feet in diameter
the asteroid is about half the size of the "London Eye" Ferris wheel.
a visting scholar at the University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory who is also a doctoral student at Tsinghua University in Beijing
the report is the first account of a potentially hazardous near-Earth asteroid that has been linked to a specific crater on the moon.
Previous research pointing to Kamo'oalewa likely originating from the moon included its reflectance spectrum
which is more compatible with lunar materials rather than the general population of near-Earth asteroids
and its low orbital velocity relative to Earth
suggesting it originated close to the Earth-moon system
scientists had not succeeded in pinpointing its likely point of origin until now.
the research team used impact and dynamical modeling
The team included colleagues from Tsinghua University
the University of British Columbia and the Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur in France
it would have required an impactor of at least 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) in diameter to launch a large fragment like Kamo'oalewa beyond the moon's gravitational pull
the impact would have dug up Kamo'oalewa from deep beneath the moon's surface
leaving behind an impact crater larger than 10 to 20 kilometers (6-12 miles) in diameter
the crater would have to be younger than the average lifetime for near-Earth objects
which spans about 10 million to 100 million years
a very short and recent period in the history of the solar system.
While the lunar surface is riddled with thousands of craters from impacts spanning the moon's 4.5 billion year-history
only Giordano Bruno with its 14-mile diameter and estimated 4 million years of age fits the bill in terms of size and age
making it the most probable source of Kamo'oalewa's origin
The team also showed that this scenario is feasible from an impact dynamics perspective.
for lunar crater fragments to reach an unusual orbit like Kamo'oalewa's
and many were skeptical that it could come from the moon," said co-author and Lunar and Planetary Laboratory professor Erik Asphaug
"For 50 years we have been studying rocks collected by astronauts on the surface of the moon
as well as hundreds of small lunar meteorites that were ejected randomly by asteroid impacts from all over the moon that ended up on Earth
Kamo'oalewa is kind of a missing link that connects the two."
According to co-author and UArizona planetary sciences professor Renu Malhotra
the findings open up a source of near-Earth asteroids that has not been seriously studied until now
and they have revealed previously unknown orbital pathways for the transport of rocks from and between planetary bodies
"Testing the new model of Kamo'oalewa's origin from a specific
young lunar crater paves the way for obtaining ground-truth knowledge of the damage that asteroid impacts can cause to planetary bodies," Malhotra said
it provides scientists with a natural laboratory to test ideas around asteroid impacts and get a better idea of what the consequences of such an event might be
should humankind ever experience one.
For a strip mall-size rock to be blasted out of the moon at several miles per second and sent into orbit required very specific circumstances
"You’d think the impact event would pulverize and distribute the ejecta far and wide," Asphaug said
we turned the problem around and asked ourselves
the model provides more than just an explanation for the origin story of one particular asteroid
How massive rocks can be ejected from the surface of a planet and survive intact can be informative for fundamental questions
such as the origin of life in the universe
suggests that life – or its ingredients – could have been brought to planetary bodies from other sources across space
in the form of "organic hitchhikers" coming along for the ride
"While Kamo'oalewa comes from a lifeless planet
it demonstrates how rocks ejected from Mars could carry life – at least in principle," he said
The Giordano Bruno impact event likely would have produced tens of hundreds of 10-meter-size ejecta fragments into space
The upcoming Tianwen-2 mission aims to return samples from Kamo'oalewa
potentially confirming its lunar origin and enriching our understanding of lunar impact dynamics and space weathering effects
NASA's NEO Surveyor mission is anticipated to identify more members of this lunar-derived near-Earth population
"Fans of crime drama know the importance of arriving at the scene while all the evidence is fresh," Asphaug said
pointing out the importance of sample return missions such as the UArizona-led OSIRIS-REx mission
"They open up the unsolved cases surrounding the origins of meteorites in our collections
which are thought to have come from hundreds of other primitive asteroids."
Because Kamo'oalewa is not a surface rock but was ejected from much deeper than any mission had ever sampled
Asphaug has high hopes for the Kamo'oalewa sample Tianwen-2 is expected to bring to Earth: "It will be different in important ways from any of the specimens we have so far – one of those connecting pieces that help you solve the puzzle."

Kamo’oalewa stays close to Earth over many orbital periods
Kamo’oalewa appears as if it circles the Earth
although its orbit around the sun is synchronized with Earth’s orbit
Last Friday (April 19, 2024), another group of astronomers published data in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Astronomy supporting a lunar origin for Kamo’oalewa
They also believe they know the impact crater that formed when Kamo’oalewa was blasted from the moon’s surface
They think they’ve found the scar left by the impact that sent Kamo’oalewa hurtling into space. The far side crater Giordano Bruno – named for the 16th century Italian philosopher
cosmological theorist and esotericist – seems to be the “likely” source

In reporting the new evidence, Phys.org described the detective work that led an international team of scientists to the suspect crater:
The team began by creating a computer model to mimic the type of collision that could have resulted in a piece of the moon’s surface the size of Kamo’oalewa being flung into space
In so doing they were able to estimate the likely size of the asteroid that would have struck the moon
the size of the crater it would have left behind
Knowing how large the impactor was, and that the impact had to be fairly recent, the team came up with a short list of possible suspects for craters that might match Kamo’oalewa’s origin. As it turned out, one crater had its fingerprints all over the asteroid. From Phys.org:
While it the mystery of Kamo’oalewa’s origin appears solved
a pair of upcoming space probes will test the team’s hypothesis
First, launching in 2025, the Chinese Tianwen-2 mission will collect a sample of Kamo’oalewa and return it to Earth. According to the Planetary Society:
The spacecraft will rendezvous with asteroid Kamo’oalewa and carry out remote sensing
assessing the planetary body for potential landing sites
It will then attempt to collect samples from the small body using two different techniques – touch-and-go and anchor-and-attach – and return to Earth to deliver the samples for analysis
A second mission – NASA’s NEO Surveyor space telescope launching in 2027 – should provide more useful data about the orbit of Kamo’oalewa. The NASA mission, however, isn’t about finding the origin of near-Earth objects (NEO)
NEO Surveyor hopes to find potentially hazardous asteroids and comets before they find us
From the NEO Surveyor website:
NEO Surveyor will carry out a five-year baseline survey to find at least 2/3 of the near-Earth objects larger than 140 meters (460 feet)
These are the objects large enough to cause major regional damage in the event of an Earth impact
By using two heat-sensitive infrared imaging channels
NEO Surveyor can make accurate measurements of NEO sizes and gain valuable information about their composition
Bottom line: A group of astronomers says their data point to a lunar origin for the near-Earth asteroid Kamo’oalewa

has covered some of the nation’s biggest stories
“It’s such a privilege to go into people’s homes and for them to trust us with their deepest
then share those stories with the world.”
but we weren’t overly worried because Sunday was high-rating with a dedicated audience
so we were blindsided when it was announced,” tells Miriama
That grief then played out for the nation during the final broadcast on May 14 last year
when newsroom staff gave the Sunday team a guard of honour as they left the studio for the last time
“I’m realistic,” she says

she’s taking this opportunity to consider her future
“My biggest motivation is asking how can I serve
I’m passionate about environmental issues and on New Year’s Eve 2018
I took up a month-long ZeroWaste challenge.”
Miriama has even been sharing her sustainability journey on social media
although she confesses she didn’t expect the ZeroWaste journey to last
Miriama ponders whether she has bought brand new of late
Anika Moa did laugh when she heard this and asked what about undies

which it turns out I’m quite good at even though I’ve no idea what I’m doing
I’ve started a production company with friends
We’re pitching ideas all over the place
Hopefully some of those ideas will come to fruition.”
“If you’d asked me that 10 or 15 years ago
I might have said I’m fearful of job loss
But now the ZeroWaste movement has really helped
So even if it’s just unpaid social media posts
I know I’m still contributing to an important issue – the environment
There’s always something I can do that makes a difference.”
Miriama makes it clear she hasn’t suffered like so many others in Aotearoa
“I’m grateful,” she says

We’ve got an awesome range of stories in the pipeline,” she says
Miriama is looking forward to this month’s HamLit
It’s a new literary festival that’s part of Hamilton Arts Festival/Toi Ora Ki Kirikiriroa
“I can’t wait to meet the authors,” she enthuses
“Michelle Rahurahu’s book Poorhara blew me away
And Airana Ngārewa [The Bone Tree] will talk about his new book Pātea Boys
I read their books while camping over summer
They offer intelligent commentary on Māori identity and colonisation
and on how Māori succeed – or don’t – in a system that people didn’t build for us.”
“I’m so fortunate to have had a 22-year career at TVNZ,” she muses
“It’s likely no one else will be able to replicate it because the landscape has changed so dramatically
“It’s a tough time for so many

near-Earth objects (NEOs) are either asteroids or comets that are gravitationally influenced enough by nearby planets to enter Earth’s neighborhood
a group of astronomers discovered a near-Earth “asteroid” named Kamo’oalewa (pronounced kamo-o-a-lewa) and provisionally designated (469219) 2016 HO3
that appeared to be an outlier compositionally
Fast forward five years and a team of astronomers from the University of Arizona suggested that the object could have originated from the Moon
since it shared more similarities with our earth-bound satellite than any other known asteroid
Two years and a second University of Arizona team later, this time led by a graduate student in the Department of Physics, Jose Daniel Castro-Cisneros, the 2016 study and a 2021 study pushed a step further to confirm their idea
Several teams are dedicated to detecting NEOs because asteroids and comets close to Earth can reveal key details about the early days of the solar system
Many asteroids and comets are relatively pristine since their formation
when the results for Kamo’oalewa differed
the team knew something unusual was going on
Kamo’oalewa stood out for several reasons
meaning that it seems to orbit Earth but is really orbiting the Sun in an earth-like orbit
Kamo’oalewa displays loyalty to Earth through its longevity
objects with earth-like orbits are stable for only a few decades
but Kamo’oalewa is expected to have a dynamical lifetime of millions of years
the object’s spectrum offered clues to its unusual composition
the spectrum matches lunar material and suggests the object is a small piece of the Moon
“We looked at Kamo’oalewa’s spectrum only because it was in an unusual orbit,” says Regents Professor of Planetary Sciences and co-author Renu Malhotra of the University of Arizona
“If it had been a typical near-Earth asteroid
no one would have thought to find its spectrum and we wouldn’t have known Kamo’oalewa could be a lunar fragment.”
The spectrum shows that Kamo’oalewa is silicate-rich
Its history is partially revealed through extensive space weathering and reddening
the team suggested that Kamo’oalewa could have been ejected from one of the many meteorite impacts that have struck the Moon
An ejected piece of Moon entering a quasi-earth-satellite orbit was always considered an unlikely phenomenon
the ejecta can either fall back on the Moon’s surface or even Earth’s surface
In rare cases the right amount of kinetic energy exists to launch material out of the Earth-Moon system — but too much to enter earth-like orbits
Kamo’oalewa is testing this idea and now
the Castro-Cisneros’ team is testing Kamo’oalewa
The 2023 group is using numerical simulations to show that it is
feasible for lunar material to achieve a quasi-satellite orbit
“We are now establishing that the Moon is a more likely source for Kamo’oalewa,” says Malhotra
Castro-Cisneros plans on developing a simulation that creates a free pathway for Kamo’oalewa to reach Earth’s co-orbital space
Numerical computations like these will improve the understanding of NEOs
these studies can help our “space forces” combat asteroids that may pose dangers to Earth
