AMHERST — Six Amherst Regional Middle School students had a unique experience for Halloween
trick-or-treating alongside a half-dozen peers from Amherst’s sister city in Kanegasaki
“It has been so much fun,” said Elaina Bust
a seventh grader whose family has been hosting Kokomi Oikawa during her three-day visit to town
Having pizza and carrots for lunch in the cafeteria on Friday
the dozen students got another opportunity to spend time together and learn more about each other
who dressed as an evil clown for Halloween
said she and Oikawa dropped by Wildwood Elementary School before arriving at the middle school
and hopes to show her around downtown and possibly do some shopping
who has visited both Osaka and Tokyo in Japan with her family
and whose grandmother speaks some Japanese
it was natural to offer to host student Tomoka Sawada
“I also thought it would be fun,” Brackenridge said
“My Mom also said hello in ‘Japanese,’ and other stuff.”
Before meeting the middle school students they would be shadowing
the Kanegasaki visitors participated in a welcoming celebration at Town Hall Thursday afternoon
bringing together town and school officials for the first visit from Amherst’s sister city in five years
who is staying with Gigi Garcia-Roma’s family
told those assembled that she is using her time in the United States
which began with a two-day tour of Washington
to hone her English skills and learn more about the United States
“Because I want to write English and see foreign cultures
and use them in the future,” Takahashi said
“Thank you for inviting us from Kanegasaki
We look forward to spending time with you for the next few days,” she said
The visit marks a tentative resumption of exchanges that began in 1988
five years before the two towns began a formal sister-city relationship
a virtual conference call between municipal leaders in both towns marked the 30th anniversary with a proclamation signed in both Japanese and English
under the International Friendship Association created by a former Kanegasaki mayor
middle school students would visit nearly annually
while for many years Amherst students would return
though Amherst has not sent students in 20 years for two main reasons
that Japanese is not taught in the public schools and worry over equity and whether all students can afford the trip
Takahashi speaking in English is an illustration of what Kazuhito Chiba
who chairs Kanegasaki’s board of education
touts as a place of both English education for students and giving them a global perspective by the time they graduate high school
“Over the years there have been over 540 students from Kanegasaki who have participated in the program
speaking in Japanese through interpreter Daniel DeGrasse
Xiomara Herman also spoke about the welcoming atmosphere for the visitors
“I hope you have the best day ever,” Herman said
Herman said she is also committed to pushing for resuming the exchange
“I am excited about when Amherst will be able to send students to have a true exchange of cultures,” Herman said
“You are adventurous to take this trip from the other side of the world to America and Amherst,” said Town Manager Paul Bockelman
Town Council President Lynn Griesmer spoke about bridging a 6,427-mile gap between the towns
Mindy Domb said that by traveling across oceans
the students are building friendship and understanding differences
Bust said she would love the opportunity to travel to Kanegasaki
“I think it would be super cool to go to Japan next year,” Bust said
That feeling about traveling abroad was shared by middle schooler Galileo Nikosi
Nikosi said he heard about the program over the school loudspeaker and then told his mother
Nikosi and Matsumoto read Japanese books and played soccer
the school’s seventh grade guidance counselor
said they hope resources can be found to make it a true exchange for the students
Middle school student Asher Gordon said his family was hosting Kashu Sato
who dressed up as Groucho Marx for Halloween
even if others thought he was Charlie Chaplin
Gordon said there were no challenges in communication
“I would like to learn a little bit of Japanese
Before the celebration concluded and the students met for the first time
each of the Kanegasaki students used their English skills to offer a presentation about their community
and the places they should see when in the Japanese city
Kanegasaki’s farm fields were discussed by Oikawa
“Agriculture is flourishing in Kanegasaki,” she said
referenced the samurai residences that still stand and their unique roofs and floors
“Samurai House is a place where you can feel Japanese culture,” she said
Kanegasaki’s Toyota factory provides employment for Sato’s parents
as well as many automobiles being produced on its assembly line
where people can stay overnight and be rejuvenated
and Sawada itinerary should the junior high school
which has about 400 students and where practice chorus
Bockelman complimented the Kanegasaki students on their bravery to do presentations in English
“Your English is excellent,” Bockelman said

Martin Bennett casts real-life figures from the World War II era in a multilayered nonfiction novel
Readers will be struck by the novel’s historical accuracy and immediately intrigued by the primary character: Mitsuo Fuchida
a Japanese captain in the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service
Before becoming fascinated by Fuchida’s story
had primarily viewed the war through an American lens
“Although I know a good bit about World War II in both the European and Pacific theaters
I’d never heard any details about the pilot who led the Pearl Harbor attack,” Bennett says
I realized that this was one of the greatest undiscovered stories of the entire war and
the greatest story I’d ever come across.” It was a story he felt determined to share with the world
Bennett’s research for the book included poring over thousands of pages of primary and secondary sources
speaking with foremost authorities on the Pacific War
In the process of learning more about Fuchida
Bennett came across additional World War II–era figures whom he felt belonged in his story
an American who bombed Japan in the Doolittle Raid
teachers and missionaries living in Japan who later escaped to the Philippines
Bennett individually develops each of the primary characters before revealing to readers how their lives intersect
Fuchida was preparing to testify at a war crimes trial in Tokyo
Fuchida had little faith in the human potential for empathy
Fuchida bumped into friend and sailor Kazuo Kanegasaki
who told Fuchida about meeting the caring missionary Peggy Covell while being held as a prisoner of war
Fuchida began to think differently about the potential for human kindness
After being ordered to testify a second time
Fuchida came across a pamphlet written by DeShazer called “I Was a Prisoner in Japan,” in which he describes how he persevered through his experience via the teachings of the Bible
would end up meeting and becoming close friends
These stories are inspiring and compelling on their own
but together they weave into one powerful cord
multiplying the impact and interest of this character-driven epic story,” Bennett says
Supporting the nonfiction elements of the narrative are hundreds of archival photographs
and other images—some never before published—that vividly capture the zeitgeist of the era and allow the main characters to come alive on the page
Bennett always considered himself a storyteller
but he found the idea of spending hours behind a keyboard off-putting
whether in the pages of a book or on the big screen of a theater,” he says
Bennett initially wrote Wounded Tiger as a screenplay
But he later decided to write a narrative that marries the dramatic development of a novel with the factual content of a nonfiction work
“I went to extraordinary lengths to ensure the historicity and accuracy of the characters
allowing historians to vet the content,” Bennett says
The result of Bennett’s in-depth research and storytelling prowess is a novel that anchors readers in history
It also speaks to the power of finding a common humanity amid chaos and discord
Wounded Tiger is a demonstration of both the destructive force of selfish ambition and hatred and the power of self-denial and love,” Bennett says
Wounded Tiger is an authentic story of hope for all.”

Yasuke must help Kuma root out 6 Corrupt Daikan who're lining their own pockets during the crisis
With the Oda clan defeated and their allies scattered
Omi has fallen on hard times in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
there are still people working to bring prosperity back to the province
asks Naoe and Yasuke to track down a list of corrupt Daikan; opportunistic officials who’re using the economic uncertainty to fill their own pockets
While there are 6 members of the Corrupt Daikan in total
you are only given leads on the first three immediately
you need to complete additional main story missions before returning to the hunt later on
Below we've embedded an interactive map showing the locations of every Corrupt Daikan in Assassin's Creed Shadows:
we'll go into more detail about where to find each Corrupt Daikan and how to draw them out
you’re given the following three clues:
The city of Omizo is on the western shore of Lake Biwa
and the farmlands are found to the north of the city
As you approach the white diamond that marks the farmlands
you see a city guard shaking down a poor farmer who can’t afford to pay
and you’ll spot another blue dot to the southeast of your position
who you can creep up on to assassinate through the hatch in his floor
Next on your list is the Soiled Merchant who lives nearby in a different part of the province
You’re given the three clues to find him:
Otsu and the Mouth of Seta are on the southern shore of Lake Biwa
The Lower District is on the right of the map
you see some poorer merchants lamenting that their former partner refuses to see them since coming into his new-found wealth
Hop the wall and either approach stealthily as Naoe or all-guns-blazing as Yasuke
You get the damage after kill engraving for defeating him
Less of a connoisseur and more of a glutton
this member of the Corrupt Daikan is causing famine in their fiefdom by keeping all of the food produced nearby for their own lavish feasts
You’re given the customary three leads to help track them down:
you must venture to the northern province of Wakasa
with Sotomo Gate being the most northern part of the area
Kanegasaki Castle is in the top-right corner and as you approach
you’ll see a procession of merchants lining up to bring food to the Connoisseur’s excessive banquet
Rather than fighting your way through the whole castle
particularly since it’s a much higher level than the Connoisseur quest
it’s actually quite easy to run around the western side
climb the viewpoint and pick out the Connoisseur in the courtyard at the very back of the Castle
sneak around his backside and dole out swift justice to this uncaring sponge who’s hungry for punishment
you receive the Barnacle Mallet and Tools on hit engraving
To reveal the next Corrupt Daikan members, you need to complete the main story mission, The Price of Rice
you get these three clues for finding the Sword Hunter:
You find the Ibu Highlands near the top right corner of the map
Nomura Village is just below Nagahama on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa
Ride south down the main road along the lake shore and the village will be on your left
since it’s a good starting point for tracking down the Yuki Onna Yokai
You find the Sword Hunter on the east side of the village in the large house at the back
surrounded by guards but easy to isolate as he wanders
But you can also just barge in and clear the whole place as Yasuke if you prefer
you get the Critical Change on Multiple Enemies engraving
but a clandestine fixer who shields themselves from harm more with subterfuge than strength
The noh theatre is just to the right of the ornament vendor below Honnoji Temple in the south of Kyoto
It’s conveniently located near the Kakurega
You find The Concubine unguarded and alone inside a small hut
For defeating them you receive The Concubine’s Veil and the Poison Affliction Duration engraving
Next, to reveal the final Daikan, you must first complete the main story mission: The Wheel Unmasked
After The Hoarder is revealed when you complete the Wheel/Mourner main quest line
The Imperial Palace is in the north of the city
Right next to the palace wall you overhear some merchants discussing how Bunzo
keeps his stolen artwork in a warehouse for only him to see - that sounds like Hoarder behaviour to me
That warehouse is the building just over the wall from where you overhear the conversation
As soon as he catches wind of your presence he’ll make a break for it
eventually running to a dead end in one of the outbuildings
but your only option is to meter out some more brutal justice
you receive the Dragonfly’s Cunning Trinket and Katana Specialization engraving
it’s time to return to Kuma at his lookout next to Hachiman Canal
There he thanks you for your efforts and dishes out the final reward: loads of XP
and its unique Damage for empty armor pieces engraving

1,700 employees are working overtime to build Toyota’s Aqua / Prius c
would the factory in Kanegasaki be able to build more
Toyota sits on 120,000 backorders for Japan alone
The two lines in Kanegasaki have an annual capacity of 300,000 units, that comes out to 25,000 cars a month. With overtime, output can be raised to 30,000 per month. The plant made 30,000 Aqua in January
30,000 Aqua in February and will make 30,000 Aqua in March
The plant is supposed to make other cars than the Aqua
The Iwate plant is also responsible for the production of the Blade
All traces of these cars have vanished from the factory
From the two manufacturing lines to the tree-lined lots where finished cars await shipment
it is Aqua/Prius c as far as the eye can see
Asked what he will do to create more capacity for the Aqua
Hattori says that production of the Ractis may be gradually shifted to the Kanto Auto Works plant in Higashi Fuji
popular with notoriously overpaid Japanese taxi drivers
A look at the numbers shows that shifting production will bring no relief
Hattori flatly denies rumors that the Aqua/Prius c might be built elsewhere than at Kanto Auto Works
or even in a different plant than in Iwate
That snow is “a pain in the neck,” says plant manager Kazutoshi Yoshida
He will keep 1,500 tons of the pain in the neck literally under wraps
and use water from the melting snow to cool the air-conditioning in summer
12 of them do lawn care duty without using any fuel
They also “create a relaxed mood amongst our workers.” I don’t dare to ask what happens to the well-fed goats come wintertime
A year ago, I had visited Toyota’s new plant in Ohira, 70 miles south of Kanegasaki
I had speculated that the plant may be a pilot plant
“We want to be the global model plant for compact vehicles,” says a proud Hattori
and his plant manager Yoshida says it again
encouraged to acquire a multitude of skill sets
Workers regularly act as production engineers
“This is not something that can happen in emerging nations,” says Yoshida
60 percent of what this plant made was exported
with further reductions likely unless the yen gets weaker and the dollar stronger
Some 50 miles from the coast, and sheltered by two mountain ranges, the plant survived the earthquake only slightly damaged. It was back up four days after the quake. Then, it had to wait for parts from less lucky suppliers. One factor in its survivability is the gas-fired cogeneration plant that can provide two thirds of the plant’s electrical power
the last two of Japan’s 54 nuclear power plants will go off-line for maintenance
leaving Japan’s power grid in an even more precarious state than last summer
the plant opened to outside visitors for the first time since March 11
we work with one shift,” says my guide

Ten years have passed since Toyota Motor East Japan Inc
Under the initiative of Toyota Motor President Akio Toyoda
this “northern base” was created by merging Kanto Auto Works in Yokosuka
Central Motor in Ohira and Toyota Motor Tohoku in Taiwa
“There will be no recovery of Japan without the recovery of the Tohoku region
Toyota Motor East Japan will be its driving force,” Toyoda said at the time
expressing his determination to transform the new company into Toyota group’s third base behind similar operations in the Chubu and Kyushu regions.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });

JPN) - Japan's factories boosted output in September
reversing a slide in the previous month owing to stronger domestic demand and highlighting that the world's third-largest economy is gathering steam
Industrial production rose 1.5 percent month-on-month
compared with a revised fall of 0.9 percent in August as demand among Japanese consumers for electronics and cars rose ahead of a sales tax hike next year
the nation's plants expanded production by 1.8 percent
economist at Norinchukin Research Institute in Tokyo
said the data pointed to a recovery that is "continuing steadily"
while Japan's export picture remains tepid with unsteady demand overseas
Bank of Japan (BoJ) policymakers will be poring over the latest data as it starts a two-day policy meeting that wraps up on Wednesday
Markets are keen to see if the central bank would expand an aggressive monetary easing programme
as they watch for signs its US counterpart was ready to start winding down its own stimulus drive
Analysts widely expect the Federal Reserve to hold steady on its bond-buying programme in the absence of a firm recovery in the world's biggest economy
The fresh Japanese production figures come after separate data Tuesday showed that the country's thrifty households boosted their spending last month while the unemployment rate fell
The 3.7 percent on-year jump in spending -- the best result in six months -- far outstripped economists' expectations
Japanese growth has easily outpaced expansion in other G7 nations this year and the government hailed recent consumer price data as showing it is winning the war on deflation
The latest spending figures and a stronger labour market are key yardsticks for the success of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's policy blitz
Stronger consumer spending was likely driven by expectations over a sales tax hike next year as consumers looked to buy goods more cheaply before the rate increase
designed to bring down Japan's staggering national debt
But Tokyo has been under heavy pressure to reduce a debt mountain that is proportionately the heaviest burden among rich countries
at more than twice the size of the economy
Abe has pledged to drag Japan out of its 15-year deflationary spiral by stoking price rises through lifting wages and consumption
A producers' survey released with the industrial production figures on Wednesday showed manufacturers have mixed expectations over the coming months
forecasting a 4.7 percent output rise in October before a decline of 1.2 percent in November
"The outlook for the manufacturing sector remains buoyant," London-based Capital Economics said in a note
"While the October forecast will likely turn out too optimistic
there is a good chance that industrial production will finally return to the levels observed at the beginning of last year in the coming months."
Tokyo hailed a key inflation indicator touching a five-year high as proof its growth blitz was working
Stripping out volatile fresh food and energy prices
which have largely driven recent increases
prices did not fall in September -- deflation-plagued Japan's best result since December 2008
KANEGASAKI - An exciting new model of Toyota's popular Prius hybrid vehicle will eliminate all turn signals and replace them with a large virtue signal
The car will feature a lighted signal spanning the rear of the trunk
which will flash several messages when activated
The base model simply says "BETTER THAN THOSE PEOPLE," while custom options include messages like "Doing My Part," "Environment First," and "If Only You Cared About The Earth As Much As I Do."
"We understand what matters to our drivers," a Toyota spokesperson told reporters
"More than letting other drivers on the road know which direction they are turning
our drivers desperately want to let people know their values are superior to everyone around them at any given moment."
Toyota expects the shaming message of the virtue signal to distract the public from noticing its rising carbon footprint from the additional energy utilized to build the signal
