playwright and activist John Kani is a legend in South Africa
beaten and almost left for dead because of his work developing and starring in plays that were often searing indictments of apartheid
"When you grow up in a war torn or an oppressive regime and you are at the receiving end of that injustice
is an unbroken commitment to the liberation of your people," Kani said
Kani is perhaps best known in the United States for voicing Rafiki in two Lion King movies and playing King T'Chaka in Black Panther and Captain America: Civil War
But he's been compared to Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier – lions of acting who were also significant activists for racial justice
He's been recognized by several governments for his work, including an Order of Ikamanga from South Africa, and an Order of the British Empire
He also received a Gold Medal in the Arts from the Kennedy Center
Dressed in a baseball cap and down jacket, Kani recently reflected on his career during a break from his new play Kunene and the King
currently on stage at The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington
In the 1960s, Kani began a close creative partnership with white South African playwright Athol Fugard, who died earlier this week
along with Fugard and fellow actor Winston Ntshona
developed Sizwe Bansi Is Dead and The Island
plays that look at the harsh realities of apartheid
They performed them for racially mixed audiences in South Africa which was rarely done at the time
New York Times critic Clive Barnes, who saw The Island on Broadway, called it "the most terrifyingly realistic play of prison life I've ever seen" and a reminder "of man's unending inhumanity to man in many parts of the world."
Kani would go on to perform in the Fugard anti-apartheid masterwork Master Harold…and the Boys
which was initially banned in South Africa

Kani spoke warmly of his long-time collaborator and friend
I would be detained – he would be given a stern warning
"And then they took his passport or they would restrict his movement
or they would constantly put the secret police to observe his movements – but I was the one who would get the brutal strike from the law."
Fugard and Ntshona brought stories of the plight of Black South Africans to stages in Europe and the United States
Fugard's daughter Lisa Fugard said their work gave overseas audiences a more visceral experience than what they were reading in the newspapers
"It informed and educated and got audiences outside of South Africa thinking and questioning," she said
"The secret police … was always just lurking around on the edges of the work that my dad and John were doing together," Lisa Fugard said
Not long after Kani and Ntshona jointly won Tony Awards for best actor in a play in 1975 for Sizwe Bansi Is Dead and The Island
"The birth of John's theater life was in that crucible of apartheid with all those restrictions and struggle," she said
"In the fight against apartheid in South Africa
John was just day after day after day in his art
taking that on and speaking for people who didn't have a voice."
In 1982, Kani was stabbed 11 times after starring in a play about an interracial marriage. Five years later, undeterred, he starred in another interracial play, becoming the first Black actor to play Othello in a South African production
When director Ryan Coogler first saw Kani as King T'Chaka in Captain America: Civil War
he knew he wanted to work with him in Black Panther
"I was just so profoundly impressed," said Coogler
It was Kani's idea that he and his son T'Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman, should speak to each other in Kani's native Xhosa language
Ultimately it was decided that Wakandan would actually be Xhosa
Coogler said that it was a privilege to get to know Kani during filming
"It was very clear that he had laid it on the line for the dignity of Black South Africans," he said
At age 81, Kani continues to write about the lingering effects of apartheid. He wrote and stars in Kunene and the King
a prominent white South African actor and a Black South African nurse come together in a tense
sometimes humorous dialogue about South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission
is preparing to play Shakespeare's King Lear
is a nurse sent to his home to take care of him
Jack doesn't feel guilt over the oppression of Black South Africans during apartheid
because he says he never physically harmed anyone himself
Lunga tries to explain to him that his silence made him just as culpable as if he had
"Silence makes him an accomplice to the suffering of the majority," said Kani
"There comes a time in post-apartheid that you find many people even denying that apartheid was bad," he said
"You find even white people eloquently saying
there was some good in it because it gave people skills to survive under such terrible and difficult conditions.'"
Kani said his goal with Kunene and the King was to get these two polar opposites "in one room and just make them talk to each other and I'll be the witness and watch it."
While Kani's work explores the impact of South African politics on humanity
he describes himself as a "cultural activist," which he said is different from being a political activist
"Cultural activists are more sensitive to the feelings of the people on the ground," he said
that makes me feel like I serve my community much closer to them in the most intimate way."
Kunene and the King is running at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington

Freshman year of college is a time of transition
Between being away from home and learning how to take care of yourself
More so for Florida State University student Kani Schram
who found herself with a burgeoning eventing team hoisted upon her when the previous team captain needed to step down
I think our roster has maybe six or seven people on it
Schram and Leto are still co-captains of the Florida State University Intercollegiate Eventing Team
They want to field a team for this year’s USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Championship
“A lot of what Gianna and I have been trying to do is just getting the name of the team out there
like showing up at shows with logos,” Schram said
the team didn’t have enough members to field a squad for the Championship
she had the support of the University of Florida eventing team
“My best friend is actually the captain of the UF Eventing Team
And when I told her that I was gonna go and either get on a scramble team or just figure something out
so I'll just put you on one of my teams,’” Schram said
Far from viewing each other as competitors
Schram and Walter work together to achieve similar goals—to grow their teams and create a lasting legacy of intercollegiate eventing in Florida
and we work really closely together trying to promote eventing in Florida and trying to grow both of our teams
There's no reason both of our teams shouldn’t be some of the biggest eventing teams around
because we're so close to Ocala,” Schram said
you just want to promote the sport and promote that
there's going to be an eventing team for you
my goal is that there will still be a community for those event riders who do come to Florida State.”
While she was working on growing the FSU Eventing Team
Schram has also spent her college years working on another challenge—her Off the Track Thoroughbred
Schram had purchased “Daisy” to be her event horse
but the mare’s difficult and nervous nature pushed that dream onto the back burner for several years
“She was supposed to be my next event horse
but it became evident at the time that that may not happen
and no one really had a lot of faith in us
And so that was kind of hard,” Schram said
“The difficulty with Daisy was just that she's super high strung
She continues to be very much afraid of her own shadow
I literally could not get this horse to walk over a pole on the ground
I fell off so many times because there was a hose on the ground
but there were a lot of things that I think were indicative that maybe her life growing up wasn’t super fantastic.”
Daisy was so difficult that Schram purchased Oliver
a steady horse who could help her accomplish her goals more quickly
Schram could only bring one horse with her
Knowing it would be easier to find Oliver a temporary spot
she sent him to the University of Florida Eventing Team and brought Daisy with her to college
“That’s where my arrangement with the University of Florida eventing coach Michelle Mercier came in
She said that she would take Oliver and use him as part of her lesson program,” Schram said
because I had this perfect angel baby horse who could do no wrong
I decided to take this psychotic little Thoroughbred to college.”
Schram remembers meeting with her current trainer
because I think we spent the whole first lesson trying to go over a single white wooden pole on the ground and it just wasn't happening,’” she recalled
the mare was 16 years old and still extremely green with little formal training
Despite all of the obstacles that stood in their way
I felt that this horse had obviously not been given the chance to truly see what she could do
And I felt like I owed her that opportunity,” Schram said
I think that's kind of your responsibility—to ensure that you're helping your horse in some way
I owed her the chance to see what she could really do and to see what she had going on underneath all of her crazy nervous energy
She has always held a special place in my heart
and I was determined to be the one to give her that opportunity.”
Schram quickly learned that she had to throw out any sort of timeline
“Daisy doesn't do things on anyone else's schedule
We stayed really committed to lessons and to making sure we continued on the right path,” Schram said
Schram competed Daisy in the Novice division at the Intercollegiate Eventing Championship
and we’ve had so many people doubt us or express concerns or be really sketched out by the whole situation
It’s required a lot of hard work for both of us
and I think that’s what made it so special,” Schram said
the hardest horses are the ones who teach their riders the most
Daisy is one special horse who fits perfectly into that category
all of the battles Schram and Daisy fought through together
their relationship has grown stronger than ever
“The biggest thing she's taught me is perseverance
I've had this horse for six or seven years now
but really only the last two or three years have we had a real partnership,” Schram said
“Every bit of the last three years has been quite a battle
I think she's taught me a lot about just sticking with it and keeping my eyes on the bigger picture
the pair may not be able to achieve everything Schram hoped and dreamed of
Schram refuses to push the mare beyond her limits and is instead prioritizing her health and happiness
“I'm being very conservative about what I push her to do
because she is so special to me and I never want to make her do more than I think her body is able to handle,” Schram said
disappointed but committed to her decision
“We had finally gotten to a point where we were able to show
So definitely the thought of taking a step back is not my favorite part of our journey
the fact that we were able to accomplish all that we did is a big deal in itself
I never had many expectations going into it
so I'm just thankful for the time and all the cross-country runs that we did get to have.”
“I think it's definitely made me appreciate the journey and how my relationship with her in general has gotten stronger,” Schram added
Looking ahead to the Intercollegiate Eventing Championship this spring
Schram still plans to have a strong presence at the event
“All these girls who work so hard during the school year
I just want them to be able to go to this event because it is so fun
My goal is just to get a team there and make sure that everyone has fun and gets to see what it's all about,” Schram said
Whether or not Daisy will be by her side at the 2025 event is another story
and I haven't gotten her out or anything yet this season,” Schram said
“I would love for her to go run around the novice at Stable View
but we're just going to be patient and see what happens in the next few months and see how she's feeling.”
About the USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Program
The 2025 USEA Intercollegiate & Interscholastic Eventing Championships were an incredible success
ushering the programs forward as the first standalone championships knock on the door for 2026
The Intercollegiate and IEL Programs were merged for their year-end championships to ensure that the USEA’s junior and young adult members have a goal to continue to pursue their passion for eventing throughout their educational years and beyond
and the support the event has received in the last two years has been astounding
A pre-purchase examination (PPE) is big part of investing in a new eventing partner
but there are so many options and add-ons that can be done in a PPE that the process can feel a bit daunting

and while he has taken roles in Hollywood movies
his theater work is known for exploring how the brutality of apartheid affected everyday people
NPR's Elizabeth Blair talked to John Kani while he's starring in his new play "Kunene And The King" at the Shakespeare Theater in Washington
Tens of thousands of Black South Africans were killed or imprisoned under apartheid
and it was during that time that Kani performed in plays that reflected the harsh reality of what was going on
he and fellow actor Winston Ntshona won Tony awards for "Sizwe Banzi Is Dead" and "The Island," - plays developed with Athol Fugard
When Kani and Ntshona were back in South Africa
they were imprisoned.KANI: We spent 23 days in solitary confinement.BLAIR: About six years later
Kani kissed a white woman in a play in Cape Town
he was stabbed 11 times.KANI: One of the Afrikaans guys said - we can go now; he's dead - and just kicked me

She says John Kani and Winston Ntshona often came to their house to work on plays with her dad
But the only way they could do that legally was for Fugard
to get them work permits.FUGARD: So he actually had to create this permit
I think saying that John was working for him as a chauffeur and that Winston was either working in the house or on the property
And that sort of allowed them to circumvent some of the laws of that time in South Africa.BLAIR: John Kani says that creative partnership with Fugard began in the 1960s.KANI: Even within my own family
I had never had a friend for such a long time (laughter)
I would be detained; he would be given a stern warning
But I was the one who would get the brutal strike from the law
So we developed this incredible relationship which was built on trust.BLAIR: Kani is still focused on his native South Africa - this time on the lingering effects of 40 years of oppression
He wrote and stars in "Kunene And The King," about a Black nurse taking care of a dying white actor
Kani says there are white South Africans who think they didn't do anything wrong during apartheid if they didn't physically harm anyone.KANI: What we'll remember most is your silence
And that's what I'm trying to make him understand - that you were born with this white privilege which you are taking as normal
But you still had the responsibility at age 18
John Kani says he will continue asking questions and telling the stories of everyday people who might not have a voice.KANI: I see what they see
that makes me feel like I serve my community much closer to them
in a most intimate way.BLAIR: Elizabeth Blair

Culture Creators, a global platform dedicated to amplifying diverse voices and shaping cultural narratives has launched Creators Collection, a high-end luxury athleisure brand. Its launch is marked by a special collaboration with streetwear legend, the designer Karl Kani
Kani is known by many as the “Godfather of Urban Fashion.”
Kani is largely associated with the rise of streetwear. As hip-hop gained popularity in the 1990s, the self-taught designer who was raised in Brooklyn was able to unleash pieces that spoke to the direction urban fashion was headed. He’d once dreamed of being an artist as he previously stated in an interview with Red Bull
he decided upon creating clothing due to watching his father get statement clothing made
He recalled going to his father’s tailor to get his first outfit created.
his friends wanted the outfit he’d gotten made–and the rest is history–with a template
Kani began pioneering the baggy and iconic hip-hop look
A move to Los Angeles also gave him a stamp of approval
which had hip-hop flavor and the use of the brand’s beloved logo
Not to be lost is the fact that Karl Kani’s brand was a force that defined style in the 1990s
Phat Farm and FUBU were rising on the radar of the global fashion market
the Karl Kani and Culture Creators collaboration launch arrives alongside Kani announcing he will be mentoring a new generation of designers
“Streetwear is more than fashion—it’s culture
and it’s a statement of identity,” says Karl Kani
“I’m beyond excited to be mentoring emerging designers through this partnership with Culture Creators
We’re not just dropping a collection; we’re creating a platform where the next big streetwear talent can rise and be seen
and I’m here to make sure we keep pushing the culture forward
bringing more designers into the fold and making space for new voices in the industry.”
Joi Brown has shared that the Creators Collection is designed to challenge the status quo in luxury fashion by infusing storytelling into every piece
“The Creators Collection is a movement
Fashion is one of the most powerful tools for storytelling
and we’re ensuring that every piece speaks to culture
“Through this collaboration with Karl Kani and future global designers
we’re creating something that resonates deeply—both in style and significance.”

The collaboration between the two universities began in 1996 with a veterinary faculty exchange facilitated by Professor Emeritus Gerhardt Schurig
Schurig served as the college's dean from 2004 to 2013
Working with Virginia Tech Outreach and International Affairs
Schurig expanded the program universitywide
"My first experience at Virginia Tech was as an exchange student in 2011," Kani said
"That three-month program opened my eyes to the possibilities in veterinary education and research
I knew then that I wanted to return someday."
That opportunity came when Kani pursued his Ph.D
in biomedical and veterinary sciences at VMCVM
he returns to Blacksburg as a faculty member
ready to inspire the next generation of veterinarians
Kani's research interests reflect his commitment to advancing veterinary education
including innovation in teaching veterinary anatomy
"Anatomy is often seen as a subject heavy on memorization," Kani said
"My goal is to make it more engaging and relevant to clinical practice
I want students to see the connections between what they learn in the lab and how it applies to patient care."
Kani's approach aligns with the veterinary college's integrative curriculum
His experience in both anatomy and diagnostic imaging will help students bridge the gap between basic sciences and clinical applications
Kani held teaching positions at Santo Tomás University in Chile and his alma mater
and semiology provides a solid foundation for his role at VMCVM
Kani's practical experience extends beyond the classroom
He has worked in diagnostic imaging and completed a small animal medicine residency at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Universidad Austral de Chile
His volunteer work at a wildlife rehabilitation center also reflects his passion for exotic animal medicine
"Working with wildlife gave me a unique perspective on comparative anatomy," Kani said
"It's fascinating to see how evolutionary adaptations manifest in different species
and I'm excited to bring that enthusiasm to our students."
Kani will teach first- and second-year veterinary students
focusing on normal animal anatomy and the anatomy of various body systems
He hopes to incorporate his expertise in radiology and ultrasound to help students visualize anatomical structures in living animals
As he prepares for his first semester of teaching at the veterinary college
he is excited about the opportunities ahead
"I'm looking forward to working with our talented students and collaborating with my colleagues on our anatomy curriculum," he said
"There's so much potential for integrating technology and hands-on learning to make anatomy even more accessible and relevant."

a nurse in a Mumbai hospital is confronted by the emptiness in her life when she helps a friend move to a seaside village
Girls Will Be Girls focuses on a mother who toys with her teenage daughter’s boyfriend.
These strikingly dissimilar roles are both played by Kani Kusruti
an award-winning stage and screen performer who’s been appearing onscreen for 20 years
a core integrity that makes her convincing no matter what class or type she plays
this has been a breakthrough year for Kusruti: Shuchi Talati’s feature-directing debut Girls Will Be Girls won Sundance’s Audience Award and was released this past September in U.S
while Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light screened at Cannes
Kusruti was a member of the New Currents jury at this year’s Busan International Film Festival
and Rotterdam festival director Vanja Kaludjercic
The Film Stage: The roles in these two movies are so different
Do you use the same approach for them in terms of research and rehearsal
Kani Kusruti: I’m open to different approaches
Some directors are very clear about what they want––they may not give you a lot of freedom to interpret your character––so I keep an open mind until we meet and have two or three discussions
Then I have an idea of what kind of portrayal they’re looking for
If I’ve already formed a rigid approach to a role
it’s going to be difficult for me to unlearn what’s fixed in my mind
it can be fun to work for someone else’s vision
I have a very good relationship with my mother
so when I was reading the script I was thinking
“Why is this woman being this way to her daughter?” But after talking with Shuchi and hearing the way she described Anila
I thought there was something interesting there
Plus it’s great to get to play someone you’ve never seen
someone you don’t know in real life. Shuchi was open to my comments
and when we had a reading with Preeti Panigrahi––who was cast as Mira
Anila’s daughter––I suddenly understood my character
To go back to your question: I’m not sure if this was a conscious approach to the role
I know Shuchi and I worked with Anila’s physicality
Both Shuchi and Payal wanted me to put on weight
Could you draw on anything in your own experiences for Anila
It was one of the most challenging characters for me
some friends who watched the film would say things like
Kani Kusruti at Busan International Film Festival
Anila and Mira have an interesting dynamic
There’s love but also a lot of bitterness and jealousy
And then everything is magnified when it seems that both are attracted to Mira’s classmate
At times Anila wants to be the best mother
and at other times she enjoys the attention Sri is giving her
Shuchi said that she doesn’t force a character to be one way or another
So when you’re performing with Preeti
Shuchi had a very interesting way of directing our scenes
so it was one of the quietest sets I’ve ever been on
because it gave us more time to shoot. Shuchi would shoot a scene exactly like she wrote it in the script
Then Shuchi would shoot it where I’m not angry
Shuchi ended up with so many permutations and combinations to edit with
I was curious to watch the film just to see how my character evolved
it could have been an entirely different movie
What I love about your acting is watching your eyes as you look at other people
There’s an interior quality to your performance
It’s more than just delivering lines
You have scenes in Girls Will Be Girls where you’re staring intently at Mira
but it’s up to the viewer to determine what you’re feeling
and I think for her film it works pretty well
There are open-ended scenes in Payal’s film as well
but she had much clearer thoughts about what she expected from my performance
There are moments in All We Imagine as Light where your character Prabha looks pensive
I think Prabha is negotiating all the time with what she wants and what society expects
She’s struggling to present herself as a good person to Indian society; she’s always trying to be that good person despite her personal desires
who’s always getting away with more than society allows
Payal told me that Prabha is a very good nurse
she’s thinking about what she has to do on the job the next day
Payal was inspired by a nurse in real life
She wants what she thinks Indian people have: a partner and a family
but she’s not courageous enough to pursue him. She’s a very conventional character
a woman who wants a job and then a partner and then to have a family
But that didn’t happen in her life––only the job part
In the backstory that Payal and I developed
she doesn’t have much of a relationship with her parents
“You’re better off being alone.” The look on your face is devastating
That’s a transitional point in the story for Payal: after watching Anu
Prabha is learning to look at life differently
It’s a huge step for Prabha to accept Anu’s choices
like her relationship with her boyfriend Shiaz
I was so happy that the film ends in a very positive way for women
So much of All We Imagine as Light concerns how difficult it is for the characters to move around Mumbai with its crowded trains and buses
We rehearsed so well before that we could just go and do our dialogue
I’ve worked like that in other films
one where we shot inside a mosque with the camera hidden under a towel
Somehow I think your concentration is even greater in those scenes; we pay more attention
I thought the whole crew worked best in uncontrolled situations
What do you think the response will be when these films open in India
I’m curious about “normal” moviegoers; I can’t predict. India is culturally so different
We have 22 languages and each state has its own culture
we have a very strong culture of watching films
So I can imagine Girls Will Be Girls might do very well
which will attract a specific audience––as opposed to Payal’s film
which has Malayalam and Hindi and Marathi dialogue
I think there is a certain amount of interest about All We Imagine as Light because it won in Cannes
Girls Will Be Girls is now in theaters and All We Imagine as Light opens on November 15

In 2012, playwright Athol Fugard, who was then 80, said, "I have a greater sense of adventure at this moment in my life than I ever had in the past." Fugard is pictured above in February 1985
When apartheid ended, and Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa, Athol Fugard thought his life as a playwright was over, he told NPR in 2015
"I sincerely believe that I was going to be South Africa's first literary redundancy," Fugard said
South Africa caught me by surprise again and just said
Fugard told stories about the corrosive effects of a political system which oppressed the black majority in his native country
The prolific playwright died Saturday in Stellenbosch
He chronicled life both during and after apartheid in such plays as Blood Knot
Sorrows and Rejoicings and "Master Harold"..
London theater critic Matt Wolf says Fugard wrote intimate
"So very many of his plays have casts of two or three
teeming canvas is the canvas of the imagination
Blood Knot featured only two actors onstage; they played brothers
He told NPR's Michel Martin that the play was considered revolutionary at the time
"The play shattered one jingoistic belief that the stage belonged to things that looked like English drama," recalled the playwright
"And the notion that a South African story would be not only possible — but would be entertaining and significant — amazed South African audiences."
As well as audiences in London and New York
But South African authorities confiscated his passport
South African playwright Athol Fugard with actors John Kani (left) and Winston Ntshona at a 1973 production of Sizwe Bansi Is Dead in London
The playwright was born in 1932 and grew up in Port Elizabeth
and an alcoholic – something Fugard struggled with himself
Fugard said she helped him find the empathy that guided him through the years
"Society was trying to make me conform to a set of very rigid racist ideas," Fugard explained
"And she was endowed with just a natural sense of justice and decency
And she was asking questions about the world in which the two of us found ourselves struggling
where white 17-year-old Hally spends an afternoon with two Black men who work there
They are surrogate fathers for the confused teenager
Fugard told South African television in 1992: "The young Athol Fugard did in fact spit in the face of a Black man to his eternal shame
I can remember that moment in my childhood when it happened."
The play was banned in South Africa but was a hit around the world and filmed several times
It is a play "about a breakdown of communication
about a withdrawal away from an understanding of each other into our separate
The collision of those worlds had serious consequences during apartheid
ended up on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela," Fugard said
That notorious prison became the setting for a Tony Award-winning play, The Island, which Fugard created with actors John Kani and Winston Ntshona
the number of times over the years that his name has come up and people who don't know much about him think that he's Black," says critic Matt Wolf
And I don't think they quite realize the empathic project that his life is."
Fugard said both his mother and the work of creating art itself forced him to be empathetic
"My job as an artist is to exercise and to keep my imagination strong enough to make those leaps out of my reality and into other realities," Fugard explained
It's a job that he took seriously and the stories he told
An earlier version of this story misspelled the city Cape Town as Cape Twon

redshirt junior cornerback Kani Walker has developed into one of the best defenders in the Sooners' secondary
Walker played sparingly during in his first year in Norman before stepping into a significant role in OU's rotation last year
but didn't make a noticeable impact for Jay Valai and Oklahoma's cornerback room in 2023
Over the offseason, however, Walker took a huge step forward, earning praise from his head coach multiple times leading up to the Sooners' 2024 campaign. In Week 1 against Temple, the talented DB earned a spot in the starting lineup and had an impressive performance.
The Douglasville, GA, product logged one interception and one pass breakup against the Owls, catching the ball off of a Kendel Dolby deflection for OU's first interception of the season.
Walker's improvement on the field is only part of how the talented defensive back has grown since he arrived in Norman.
Walker transferred to OU after spending the 2021 season at Louisville, coming to Norman just a few months after Venables was hired to be the Sooners' head coach. In his first year with the team, Walker played just 65 defensive snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.
In 2023, however, Walker's snap count jumped to 428 as the lengthy DB earned a spot in Valai's rotation. With starting cornerback Gentry Williams frequently dealing with injuries last season, Walker had plenty of opportunities to be on the field in meaningful situations.
The former Cardinals' defender accumulated 24 tackles, four pass breakups, one interception and one forced fumble as a redshirt sophomore, receiving a career-high 69.3 defensive grade from PFF.
Walker started off the 2024 season with 40 defensive snaps and a 74.2 defensive grade against Temple, showcasing the strides he has made during his time under Venables and Valai.
"I feel like I had a lot of stuff to overcome, like off the field and on the field," Walker said on Monday. "My guys, teammates and coaches, like everybody, helped me with like S.O.U.L. mission and all. And yeah, I mean, it's coming to display. We ain't done. Job's not done. ... Figuring out everything I had to figure out off the field. That was a lot. Like, like I said, I had to mature a lot.
Listed at 6-foot-2 and 206 pounds, Walker has ideal size for an SEC cornerback in addition to the strength and speed to compete with a variety of pass catchers. With good length and speed, Walker needed his first two years in Norman to develop the mental side of the game, but seemingly has started to find his rhythm.
After serving as one of the team's primary cornerbacks last season, Walker should continue to see an even bigger role in 2024. If the redshirt junior defensive back is able to build on his impressive offseason and Week 1 performance, Walker will be a key piece of Oklahoma's defense throughout its inaugural year in the SEC.

VISIONS DU RÉEL 2025
by Muriel Del Don
08/04/2025 - Kani Lapuerta invites us to join them in their highly respectful and affectionate close-up observation of a trans adolescent’s everyday life as she tries to impose her own rules
Presented in a world premiere in the Visions du Réel Festival’s International Feature Films Competition, Niñxs by documentary-maker
social educator and trans-feminist activist Kani Lapuerta offers a cathartic journey through eight years in the life of Karla
a trans girl who has chosen to fight against the ignorance and violence of a society which doesn’t understand and therefore refuses difference
a society based on privileges which only white
giving her the dignity and respect she deserves
At the foot of Tepozteco - a sacred hill honouring the winds and fertility - nestles the small city of Tepoztlán
Karla is growing up in this strikingly mystical place immersed in nature and cut off from the world
She’s a fifteen-year-old who’s undergoing revolutionary transformation
The protagonist of Niñxs is going through the various phases of transition
a process both destabilising and emancipatory which will give her the freedom she’s always dreamed of but which she doesn’t actually believe she’ll ever obtain
helping her to produce a picture-based diary in which she’s the sole protagonist
an (anti) diva who rebels against any form of discrimination
Niñxs sees Karla and the director signing a symbolic
cinematographic but also militant and political contract
Through Kani’s incisive and poetic approach
filmmaking becomes an act of rebellion against a patriarchal society which only thinks in binary terms
Niñxs is a highly enjoyable and brilliant collective film which paints a courageous and affectionate portrait of a trans adolescence spent in a rural environment
Because despite dreaming with friends about a future paved with sequins
Karla is growing up in a deeply conservative society
a village chosen by countless hippies as a refuge and oasis in which to live an alternative life
Despite the limitations inherent to all villages
Karla has created her own community composed of young people just like her
who question and deconstruct gender stereotypes
A kind of LGBTIQ+ militia which favours razor-sharp
Karla and her queens present themselves to the world in all their brilliant and emancipatory diversity
The protagonist is supported on her vital path by her anti-conformist parents
a pair of former punks (as she herself describes them) who shower her with love and acceptance
The scene where Karla and her mother are filmed sitting on two swings
talking about what it really means to be a “woman”
the mother talks with her daughter in a gesture of solidarity
both of them diverse “women” who debunk and break down stereotypes associated with a dangerously essentialist view of femininity
Karla asserts her identity as a trans woman with strength
fighting against a gender binarism which excludes her because she doesn’t conform
because she’s different and because she’s too revolutionary for the society in which she lives
turning into a manifesto for a kind of dissidence carried out with dazzling pride
it’s primarily an act of rebellion against gender binarism
against heterosexuality as the only model for desire
which always has to be labelled and channelled
The protagonist of Niñxs finds the support she was missing in the LGBTIQ+ community
an alliance of dissident bodies who are fighting for a freedom which they’ve been denied for far too long
Kani’s film paints a different portrait of trans identity
which is no longer marked exclusively by violence (even though it’s sadly undeniable) and rejection
but also by joy and acceptance within communities which want to live according to their own rules
Niñxs was produced by La Sandía Digital Produccion Audiovisual S.A de C.V (Mexico), in co-production with MartFilms (Mexico) and Sparrows on Rooftops (Germany)

says fully autonomous cars will “not appear this decade.” Kani believes “it’s a next-decade marvel
It’s super-hard.” While he acknowledges that upcoming self-driving systems will be significantly more advanced than what we see today
rushing technology of this magnitude and complexity could have serious consequences for safety

“The software we’re developing right now is so different than the software we were developing last year,” Kani told Autocar
“We’re working on large-language models now
and nobody was doing that in automotive three years ago
That kind of model needs a lot more computing power
You need more sensors like lidar and radar
and you need redundant algorithms to ensure it’s safe – and those need to run in parallel
There will be several differences between current systems and those used in the future
Kani says that whereas existing technologies follow planned rules
often resulting in “herky-jerky behavior and ghost braking,” next-generation cars will learn driving behaviors
meaning they’ll be able to operate more “calmly and smoothly,” just like a human driver
Although Nvidia is at the forefront of the race to self-driving vehicles
Kani cautioned how one mistake could push back the entire industry
“The industry needs to go slowly with this,” he said
the whole industry gets pushed back a few years
So we have to act in the most responsible way and not take any shortcuts
You can only do it when you have proven that it is really safe.”
