This Thanksgiving season a grateful UConn Health patient shares how Vascular Surgeon Dr
She is a survivor of multiple myeloma who has continued to defy the odds for the last 16 years for both her cancer and its treatment side-effects
Since 2008 she has been battling the second most common blood cancer in the U.S
and its painful and debilitating buildup of cancerous plasma cells inside her body’s bone marrow
Her care has ranged from chemotherapy infusions to the need for radiation
She is a former longtime ICU nurse who turns to UConn Health and its Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center and Dr. Swarup Kumar for her multiple myeloma care management and frequent infusions
Junghans’ career spanned over 50 years of active nursing
she worked as a nurse in the fields of radiology
I’m very happy to be cared for at UConn Health
But that’s not all Junghans is grateful for at UConn Health
While at the infusion center one day receiving care for her multiple myeloma
she and the staff she loves noticed a swelling on the side of her neck
but it was pulsating like a heartbeat,” she says
she got the call from UConn Health to head straight to the emergency department on March 27
where she was put on a blood-thinner medication intravenously
A large aneurysm had formed in her left carotid artery and needed immediate surgical intervention. The on-call vascular surgeon who came to Junghans’ rescue at the Emergency Department at UConn Health was Dr. Tina Kariya, who admitted her until surgery
“My aneurysm blew during surgery,” Junghans recounts
While UConn Health vascular surgeon Kariya was performing a minimally invasive aneurysm resection at UConn John Dempsey Hospital to remove it and reduce Junghans’ risk of a future bleed or potential stroke
our surgical team were already using the TCAR system to reverse her blood flow and it prevented her from immediately bleeding out in the OR,” says the vascular surgeon
who quickly created a large incision solution instead to perform an extensive open surgery to repair the burst carotid artery and save Junghans life
The open procedure took 7 hours to complete
and Junghans received blood transfusions during and after surgery
and it’s very rewarding to see her great success and it’s a privilege to care for her,” Kariya says
She did everything right to ensure I came out of surgery alive
“My surgery scar from my ear to my clavicle isn’t even visible.”
Alicia made a teddy bear named Benji for her vascular surgeon
who performed the lifesaving procedure just a few months after having a baby
The memorable toy is now a favorite of her now 10-month-old son
Junghans after all these years is now looking forward to this Christmas and being home for the holiday in Connecticut with her daughter visiting from Germany
“I never thought cancer or an aneurysm would ever happen to me as a nurse,” Junghans says
“But I keep doing what needs to be done for my health
I’m so happy to be at UConn Health for my care and to be where I am
Her message to others battling cancer or experiencing another type of health setback: “Just keep fighting
it is very important that every patient be their own advocate
And Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at UConn Health, Dr. Kwame Amankwah
also applauds his team’s lifesaving work
Kariya is an amazingly talented vascular surgeon
She is compassionate and provides outstanding care to her patients
We are very fortunate to have her as member of our vascular surgery division as well as a member of the UConn Health care community,” Amankwah shared

hockey fans will probably mainly remember his time with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim or his last few seasons with the St
For the 2005-06 and 2006-07 NHL seasons though
Kariya was a member of the Nashville Predators
While he was not with the Predators for a long time, Kariya was a veteran who led by his production on the ice. He was their best scorer while he donned their sweater. The Predators had a lot of talent on those two teams. Some of the names included J.P. Dumont, David Legwand, Steve Sullivan, Martin Erat, and Kimmo Timonen among others
Kariya was drafted with the fourth overall pick in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft by the Mighty Ducks
He spent the 1992-93 and 1993-94 campaigns developing his craft with the Maine Black Bears hockey team in the NCAA
His first campaign with the Black Bears saw him hit the 100-point mark with 25 goals and 75 assists in 39 games
His second season for Maine saw him get eight goals and 16 assists for 24 points in 12 games
The 1994-95 NHL season was when Kariya made his debut with the Mighty Ducks
He played in 47 games and tallied 18 goals and 21 assists for 39 points
Kariya posted superstar numbers in 1995-96
when he hit both the 50-goal and 100-point mark
He accrued 108 points in 82 games (50 goals 58 assists)

As the Mighty Ducks gained more offensive pieces like Petr Sykora, they eventually produced better results as a team. As a result, Anaheim made it to the 2003 Stanley Cup Final
The Mighty Ducks fell to the Devils in seven games
Kariya during that run to the Cup Final had six goals and six assists for 12 points in 21 games
Kariya suited up for Anaheim until he left in free agency prior to the 2003-04 campaign
he totaled the following while donning the Mighty Ducks jersey:
After just falling short of winning the Cup, Kariya moved on from Anaheim. Then-general manager Bryan Murray let him hit free agency, because the qualifying offer for him to remain with the Mighty Ducks was $10 million
It was a tough situation for the organization to let him hit free agency
Kariya left the Mighty Ducks and signed with the Colorado Avalanche. The idea of Kariya playing alongside other Avalanche forwards like Joe Sakic
and Alex Tanguay sounded dangerous for opponents
Kariya and Teemu Selanne reunited in Colorado as teammates
There was firepower all throughout the 2003-04 Avalanche
Kariya suited up for 51 games for them that campaign
and put up 11 goals and 25 assists for 36 points
Following his season in Denver, Kariya hit free agency again and inked a deal with the Predators. Adding a skilled talent like him to the mix was great, not just for the fans and organization, but for the younger teammates too. Nashville dressed Scott Hartnell, Martin Erat, Dan Hamhuis, Legwand, Ryan Suter
and more who were all 25 years old or younger
A lot of the Predators’ future was already playing games for the team
Solid veterans like Kariya and Steve Sullivan had the experience that those players back then could model themselves after
Kariya played in the postseason for Nashville in both seasons he was there
he scored two goals and produced five assists for seven points in five games
Kariya’s time in Nashville ended after two seasons. He made one more stop in his NHL career before officially hanging up the skates. He inked a deal with the St. Louis Blues for three years in July 2007
The Blues were a team that had the likes of Brad Boyes
and David Perron on the offense heading into 2007-08
Louis never made the playoffs while he was with the club
and eventually announced his retirement from the game in June 2011
Kariya was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2017
where he registered a total of 402 goals and 587 assists for 989 points
He was a two-time winner of the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
He also appeared in seven NHL All-Star Games (1996
Kariya was the captain of the Mighty Ducks from 1996-2003
Kariya will most be remembered for his time with the Mighty Ducks
He also may be remembered for his last tenure before retirement in St
His stints with the Avalanche and Predators can easily be forgotten
Even though he was only in Nashville a short time
his impact in the locker room made a difference
There were a lot of successful Predators players who had stellar careers either while still in Nashville or after they left

When Jump Crypto president Kanav Kariya announced on X he would be leaving the high-speed trading firm
it prompted the usual flurry of replies — industry luminaries wishing him luck in his next endeavour — and some that were not so usual
At least two dozen people rejoiced: A great weight had been lifted from Lido’s LDO token
rising more than 7% since Kariya’s announcement on Monday
During the “crypto winter” set off by the collapse of Terra in May 2022
Jump Crypto sold more than 5 million LDO tokens
according to data from Arkham Intelligence
That two-year fire sale cemented Jump as a villain to LDO’s retail investors who came to view the firm’s constant selling as an albatross depressing the token’s price
It is not clear whether Kariya was personally involved in Jump’s sale of LDO
He didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment
“It’s a mix of a joke and somewhat true,” Will Sheehan
founder of crypto data firm Parsec Finance
said of the tweets celebrating Kariya’s departure
“Jump was selling Lido through 2022 and 2023
and sometimes in crypto a [crypto Twitter] joke becomes an actual negative narrative.”
Lido is the largest protocol in decentralised finance
The protocol simplifies the process of “staking” Ether
Lido also issues derivative tokens that track the value of deposited Ether
Those tokens are widely accepted in Ethereum’s DeFi ecosystem and let users dodge the opportunity cost that comes with vanilla staking
It was among the most profitable protocols tracked by DefiLlama
generating $100 million in fees over the past 30 days — second only to Ethereum itself
and it gives holders the right to propose and vote on changes to the Lido protocol
But its performance has been underwhelming
Uniswap’s UNI token has a market capitalization of $7 billion
even though the protocol controls less than one-fifth the crypto deposited in Lido
MakerDAO’s MKR token has a market capitalization of $2.2 billion
while Aave’s AAVE token is worth $1.3 billion
But LDO’s rally in the wake of Kariya’s departure can’t just be chalked up to a change in Jump’s top ranks
“It’s coinciding with some relative strength from old-school DeFi coins,” he noted
Sheehan said he wasn’t sure what sparked the rally in DeFi coins
but proffered that it was a reaction to the memecoin fervour that took over the industry this year
“It feels reactionary to memes and general alt bleeding,” he said
“because these are real businesses that are much more countercyclical.”
Union Minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy, denied allegations of calling Karnataka Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan "Kulla”
HD Kumaraswamy (L), Zameer Ahmed Khan (R) Speaking to the media on Friday, Kumaraswamy expressed his dismay over the controversy
He stated that Zameer had never referred to him as "Kariya" in the past
“I have never referred to Zameer Ahmed Khan as ‘Kulla’ in my life
nor has he ever addressed me as ‘Kariya.’ He has always spoken with great respect”
He also swore before Goddess Chamundeshwari that Zameer’s accusation is false
Kumaraswamy noted that his association with Zameer Ahmed was limited to politics
“When Speaker Basavaraja Horatti called me Kumara
This shows the respect he had for me earlier.”
Zameer Ahmed Khan sparked controversy by referring to D Kumaraswamy as "Kaaliya," a derogatory term about his dark complexion
Addressing an election rally in Ramanagara
Khan explained that Congress candidate C P Yogeeshwara had previously joined the BJP due to limited options
stemming from differences within the Congress
"He (Yogeeshwara) wasn’t willing to join the JD(S) because ‘Kariya Kumaraswamy’ was seen as more dangerous than the BJP
the JD(S) demanded that the Congress government remove Khan from the Cabinet for his remark
(Also Read: Karnataka minister's 'affection' clarification on calling HD Kumaraswamy 'Kaalia')
After backlash, Khan on Tuesday apologised for calling Kumaraswamy as “Kaalia”. Khan tried to clarify that on previous occasions he addressed Kumaraswamy in such a way out of affection, when the duo shared a good bonding.
"If I had called him using such a word for the first time, I would have apologised....out of affection, he used to call me 'Kulla' (dwarf), I used to call him Kariyanna (black brother). If still he or anyone is pained by it, I apologise. What is there in that?" PTI quoted Khan.

Minoru Kariya, 65, revealed his father’s fears about the Aum Supreme Truth cult. His father Kiyoshi, then 68, the chief clerk of the Meguro Notary Office, was abducted by the cult’s followers in February 1995 and died after being given an anesthetic. Three weeks later, the sarin nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway system occurred. The following is excerpted from an interview by Yuri Ishihama, a Yomiuri Shimbun staff writer.

Before the incident occurred, my father felt he was in danger. My father’s sister, who had donated tens of millions of yen to the cult, went into hiding, and the cult was looking for her, with an eye on her assets. My father handed me a note in an agitated state the day before he was abducted.
It read: “I’m afraid [the cult] will do something to me and my entire family. If something happens, I ask you to report it to the police and have them look for me.”
My father was abducted on a street in Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, on Feb. 28, 1995. My wife called me at work and said, “Your father was kidnapped.”
My mind went blank, and I thought, “How could the cult go this far?”
I always believed that he was still alive.
However, that July, the Metropolitan Police Department informed me of his death, based on statements by the cult leaders. The police also told me his body had been burned and his ashes were dumped in Lake Motosu in Yamanashi Prefecture.
I knew it was hopeless. I was so shocked that I cried all night.
Instead of his ashes, we placed gravel, which we collected on the shore of the lake, and his favorite pair of glasses in an urn and held a funeral service. But because I never saw his body, I couldn’t believe that my father really died. I still feel that the truth surrounding my father’s death has not been revealed.
The cult’s successors are still active, including the main group, Aleph. I’m terrified that if my statements are considered “hostile,” they might harm me and my family. I don’t want an organization that follows in the footsteps of the cult to exist. As long as the group exists, someone might be harmed again.
It has been 30 years since the incident, but my fears have not disappeared.
Kiyoshi Kariya’s death, which resulted from abduction and confinement, led to the Metropolitan Police Department investigating the facilities of the Aum Supreme Truth cult.
Chizuo Matsumoto, also known as Shoko Asahara, the founder of the cult who was executed in 2018 at 63, ordered the members of the cult to kidnap Kariya. Asahara wanted to know the whereabouts of Kariya’s sister, so Kariya was given an anesthetic, putting him in a semiconscious state.
The anesthetic was administered by Tomomasa Nakagawa and Ikuo Hayashi. Kariya died of heart failure due to an overdose of the anesthetic at around 11 a.m. on March 1, 1995.
The police launched a simultaneous search of the cult’s facilities in the former village of Kamikuishiki, Yamanashi Prefecture, on March 22, two days after the sarin nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway system. Asahara was arrested two months later on May 16.
Born in 1960, he joined the National Association of Crime Victims and Surviving Families, which was disbanded in 2018. He also worked to establish such systems as victim participation, which enables them to get involved in criminal proceedings. He is currently vice chair of its successor organization New National Association of Crime Victims and Surviving Families.

2024 President of Jump Crypto steps down Kanav Kariya announced his resignation amid reports of a pending investigation into Jump Crypto’s activities and several incidents dating back to 2022

the now-former president of the crypto trading firm wrote that he intends to focus on personal relationships and reading while he searches for his next venture
Kariya also reflected on the last several years at Jump Crypto
Jump Crypto’s troubles began in February 2022 when hackers exploited the Wormhole bridge and fraudulently minted 120,000 wrapped Ethereum tokens (wETH), which were then redeemed for Ether (ETH) and other tokens on the Solana blockchain
which owned the developer behind the Wormhole bridge
assumed responsibility for the damages by depositing an equal number of Ether tokens

In May 2022, the infamous collapse of the Terra ecosystem impacted the trading firm, spawning an investor lawsuit alleging that Jump Crypto reaped $1.3 billion in profits by coordinating with Terra founder Do Kwon to manipulate the price of Terra’s UST
with the goal of maintaining the algorithmic stablecoin's U.S
The lawsuit also alleged that Jump Crypto benefited from receiving LUNA tokens at a steep discount
sometimes at a 99% markdown from the market price as a reward for propping up UST and the Terra ecosystem
Later that same year, concerns surrounding Jump Crypto’s exposure to FTX began to surface
company spokespeople assuaged investor fears
explaining that the trading firm was "one of the most well-capitalized and liquid firms in crypto" while reassuring the public that Jump Crypto was not shutting down

To wrap this article up I wanted to share a little personal note
is my all-time favorite player in NHL history and is the reason I started cheering for the team
I started following this team when I was five years old and have had my fair share of Kariya posters along with my prized 2003 Stanley Cup Finals jersey
it is not the easiest cheering for the Anaheim Ducks
most of their games start around the time I go to bed
In addition to that being a Western Conference team means they do not play teams in my area (Leafs
The only time I ever got to see them live was actually in Anaheim for two games at New Years’ of 2010-11
I was super excited to finally see the team live and reality surpassed the expectations
The team beat my dad’s Flyers on New Year’s eve
then Hiller stood on his head defeating the defending Cup Champion Blackhawks two nights later
The reason I am telling you this is because I look back on it now to think I was so close to seeing my all-time favorite player
play his final season in an Anaheim Ducks jersey
I remember the excitement about the idea of Kariya going back to the Ducks for 2011
being disappointed that he was taking that season off
and even more disappointed that he was forced to retire the next offseason
and was rightfully inducted into the Hall of Fame
Kariya returning for one more season with the Anaheim Ducks would have closed the book on his great career with the team that adored him for so long
While he still may not have won his Stanley Cup
it still would have been the fairy tale ending that started the day he was drafted by the Disney-owned franchise

In 606 games Kariya put up 669 points, topping 25 goals in every year with the Mighty Ducks with the exception of his rookie year and 1997-98 season after a cheap shot from Gary Suter
Selanne joined Kariya in 1996 and the two became one of the most dynamic duos in the NHL
combining for 830 points between 1997-2001
Selanne was moved to the San Jose Sharks midway through the 2001 season and Kariya played through the 2003 season when the Mighty Ducks lost game 7 to the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup Finals
Kariya left after a lengthy dispute on his contract
Former GM Bryan Murray was required to offer a $10 million qualifying offer to Kariya in order to prevent the star from hitting unrestricted free agency
the league had yet to implement a salary cap and revenue sharing that really hampered teams based on their market
The Mighty Ducks being a small market team with a small budget made it difficult to commit such a dollar figure to one player as the late Murray recounted
While Selanne opted out of his final year with the San Jose Shark
his priority was to return to the place that he considered his home and sign with the Mighty Ducks
While I mentioned there was no salary cap at this time having so many high payroll players still needed the two to reduce their annual figures
In order to chase a cup on an already loaded team
Selanne signed for one year at $5.8 million
and Kariya taking an $8.8 million pay cut by signing for $1.2 million for the year
While leaving the Mighty Ducks on the terms he did ruffled fans in the wrong way, leaving and taking the pay cut he did in comparison really soured Kariya to the Mighty Ducks fans. As seen on the 2004 Colorado Avalanche season documentary
fans most definitely did not welcome him back with open arms (42:00 minute mark)
injuries played a major factor for both of them in different ways
It is well documented how bad Teemu’s knee was at that point in his career and while he was able to play in 78 games that season
he was relatively ineffective by his standards putting up 16 goals and 32 points
Kariya dealt with a nagging wrist and ankle injury
only getting into 51 games putting up 11 goals and 36 points
The Avalanche would be knocked out by the Sharks in the second round
After the disappointing 2003-04 season the NHL went into a season-long lockout
Kariya took the time to get healthy from the injuries that had been bothering him over his year with the Avs
Once the lockout came to an end he signed a two-year $9 million contract with the Nashville Predators
making him the highest-paid player in team history
He showed that he was healthy and back to his productive self putting up 161 points without missing a game in his two years
and with the unknown ownership situation at the time with the Preds
Louis Blues for three years and $18 million dollars
his production dipped putting up 16 goals and 65 points on the season
and in the final two seasons of the contract
he was only able to play a combined 86 games while registering 58 points
While Kariya did have a chance to celebrate scoring his 400th career goal in his final season with the Blues, the most noteworthy part of that final year was a cheap shot at the hands of Patrick Kaleta
was the end of Kariya’s career as this concussion had doctors saying it was time to hang them up
In addition to the aforementioned hits by Suter and Kaleta, many fans of the game remember the shot Kariya took from Scott Stevens in Game 6 of the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals
on the board” still gives me goosebumps watching to this day
the fact the most memorable part of his career was getting knocked out on the ice to the point of memory loss is a bit sad as a fan
While health should always be a person’s priority
Anaheim Ducks fans could have gotten the send-off they always wanted to see for their long-time captain
That is why it still makes me think “what could have been” when it comes to Kariya playing that last season in 2010-11
it would have been very different seeing him play in the black
and orange after exclusively wearing the eggplant and jade for all the year with the Mighty Ducks
Bobby Ryan would have changed his number at some point
as he is the only other player to don number 9 in franchise history
would the Ducks have selected Ryan Getzlaf to be their captain
or would they potentially of gave it back to Paul for potentially his last year
maybe he would have decided to postpone his retirement to play one more season with his long-time friend and former Olympic teammate
The forgotten piece in all of this is that the Anaheim Ducks were actually pretty good back in 2010-11
They finished 4th in the Western Conference with 99 points
This was the year that Corey Perry put up his 50 goal Hart Trophy campaign
along with Jonas Hiller playing lights out
making the All-Star team but losing the end of his season to vertigo (honestly that prevented the team from an extended playoff run
Lubomir Visnovsky led the league for points by a defenseman that year with 68
Ryan Getzlaf missed a handful of games due to a facial fracture but still managed 76 points in 67 games
Bobby Ryan had another fantastic season with 34 goals and 71 points
Teemu Selanne put up one of his best seasons with 80 points in 73 games
While the team was good they were very top-heavy
Visnovsky finished fifth on the team in points with Saku Koivu’s 45 and rookie Cam Fowler’s 40 being the next highest
Their depth scoring included 26 games of Joffrey Lupul
and young promising forward Brandon McMillian
he still likely could have helped this team with more scoring depth as most of his issues over the years were his health
Kariya is still healthy enough to rejoin his former partner in crime in Selanne
With Teemu scoring 80 points playing mainly with Koivu (45 points) and Blake (32)
potentially bringing the opportunity to bring some of the old magic back with Kariya could have provided the Ducks with that extra scoring punch while bringing much nostalgia as well
Kariya retiring as a Duck would have also immediately quashed any ill-will that may have been present at the time
It has been well documented about Kariya’s disappearance from the game of hockey once he retired because of how he was unable to leave on his own terms
From his retirement the only time Kariya returned to Honda Center was for his friend Selanne’s final regular-season game where he attended with Joe Sakic
Back in 2015 when the Anaheim Ducks retired Selanne’s number 8
While rumors were he did not was to direct any negative attention during the ceremony
the video clip he did for his former teammate received a standing ovation
clearly showing that the fans were happy to see Paul again
the relationship with the fans has clearly been healed
Kariya has done a handful of work with the Ducks social media
was honored for his induction in the Hockey Hall of Fame back in 2017
While Kariya is clearly still not a big fan of the spotlight
he knows that whenever he returns to Honda Center it is always in open arms

“These beautiful blooms only last for a short time
unless wind or rain knock the flowers off the trees.”
cherry blossoms begin to flower when temperatures reach at least 15 degrees Celsius for a continuous period of seven to 10 days

Welcome to NHL99, The Athletic’s countdown of the best 100 players in modern NHL history
We’re ranking 100 players but calling it 99 because we all know who’s No
Every Monday through Saturday until February we’ll unveil new members of the list
TUSTIN, Calif. — Wyatt is a 10-year-old Maltese and at the moment, he is cradled in Paul Kariya’s lap and Kariya is feeding him snacks from a small bowl on the dinner table. We are sitting outdoors at Barolo’s, an Italian restaurant, popular with current and former Anaheim Ducks players — a one-stop destination for pregame meals because chicken parmigiana is always on the menu and portions are massive
even ones with Kariya’s dietary specificities
Sitting beside Kariya is his longtime partner
To really understand the current life and times of Kariya
58 on The Athletic’s list of the 100 greatest players of the post-expansion era
you need to understand the role that Wyatt plays in his life
The couple has a long list of dog-friendly hotels and restaurants that they patronize
When Wyatt attended Hall of Fame ceremonies in Toronto a few years back
he had his own seat on the plane that Kariya and Teemu Selanne chartered
Wyatt travels with Paul and Val wherever they go
“We’ve never left him with anyone else,” said Kariya
When I go on a ski trip alone or visit my family in Vancouver and he’s not around
it’s difficult to sleep because I’m so used to having him around.”
We couldn’t imagine our lives now without Wyatt
Kariya is 48 but he could pass for a 25-year-old and naturally blends in with the lunchtime crowd
a young fan recognizes him and asks — not for an autograph — but for a selfie because it is 2022
exchanges a few pleasantries and then returns to the table
One of the things Kariya likes about life in Southern California is how he can mostly live his life in virtual anonymity
Never mind that he or long-time teammate Selanne are arguably the two most popular players in Ducks history
the only two to enter the Hockey Hall of Fame primarily because of their time spent playing together in Anaheim
Kariya played 15 seasons for four NHL teams — Anaheim, Colorado, Nashville and St. Louis — and scored 989 points in 989 regular-season games
He won the Lady Byng Trophy twice for sportsmanship
He made three end-of-season first All-Star teams and two end-of-season second All-Star teams
He won a world hockey championship for Canada in 1994 and an Olympic gold medal in 2002
Much of his backstory is well-documented: How he was drafted by the Ducks in 1993 with the No. 4 pick. How the team slowly got better and, in 2003, made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final, only to lose to the New Jersey Devils in seven games
That was the year Scott Stevens leveled Kariya with a hit to the head so vicious that it knocked him unconscious
Kariya endured his share of concussions and ultimately retired because of their lingering
It took two years for the fog to lift and for life to get back to normal, and Kariya put as much effort, research and diligence into his recovery as he did into his NHL career
He took up ballroom dancing because learning the intricate sequence of steps challenged his brain in ways that other more traditional activities didn’t
he juggled to improve eye-to-hand coordination
He became an avid surfer and gets out on the water
According to longtime Ducks executive David McNab
Kariya was the perfect player at the perfect time for a new franchise — back when they were the Mighty Ducks and were named after a Disney movie
he brought respect and credibility to the franchise,” said McNab
In a place — Southern California — where there’s a star system
For the Anaheim Mighty Ducks to get someone like Paul was a phenomenal break
He brought speed and talent in an era when people mostly respected size and toughness
Everybody loved Paul because of what he was
I don’t know if this franchise succeeds the way it did without that perfect player.”
Kariya is private and lives a low-key life
occasionally dabbling in hockey matters when asked by Ducks owner Henry Samueli
with Kariya joining the Ducks’ search committee for a new general manager
Kariya invested two months into the project and made it a priority
Many of Kariya’s surfing buddies and friends — from Rob Blake to Joe Sakic — run NHL teams
but that job has no specific appeal to Kariya
Nor does joining the NHL in what a lot of people believe would be the perfect role for him — director of player safety
The possibility that Kariya would have the perfect blend of smarts and experience to run player safety gets raised constantly on social media and website threads
“That’s not something I’d be interested in,” said Kariya
Fifty percent of the people are going to disagree with you strongly every single time
you’re in a controversial position every time you act — and that’s not me
Whether I get more or less involved in hockey is a different issue than that.”
And when I raised the possibility of helping the team in a consulting capacity
if making a full-time commitment doesn’t work in his life
Because it has to be 100 percent — and then Wyatt and Val wouldn’t be happy with me
director of player personnel — you have to invest more time in it than you did as a player to do that job properly
“Players have the easiest job — by far — and the most enjoyable
I consider that I never worked a day in my life
I enjoyed all the things that some guys didn’t enjoy — like the off-ice training
But if you’re going to be a coach and watch six or seven hours of video after a game
Kariya grew up in a household of five children
the family getting a chance to dog-sit for a neighbor
and everyone was enchanted by the experience
Sharon Kariya took caring to a new level — buying and then frying up chicken livers for their temporary pet
But when the kids gently asked if there was any chance that they could get a dog of their own
that adopting a dog of their own was a real possibility
“When I turned pro and you’re living by yourself
it’s impossible to look after a dog,” said Kariya
“But Val’s sister had a Maltese and whenever Val walked in the room
the dog would follow Val out the door and didn’t want anything to do with anyone else
They are kind of bred to be a single person’s dog
the dog basically adopted Val and eventually we adopted the dog
and she passed away because of some health issues
We waited another year and then we got Wyatt.”
Kariya took Japanese lessons but eventually convinced his parents to let him drop out of classes
since they took place on weekends when he was otherwise occupied with sports
It would have been important to learn a second language
and your parents are doing the right thing there
that’s the last thing you want to be doing on a Saturday morning.”
But while his parents let the Japanese lessons slide
they mostly ran a strict household — and Kariya says he wouldn’t have had it any other way
He learned a lot of life lessons from the disciplined way in which he was raised
‘No is the most underused and important word in the English language.’ I like no,’” said Kariya
“We never had any junk food or desserts in the house
When those came out and my friends would have them for snacks
we’ll go on a streak where we have cereal and buy Fruity Pebbles.”
A typical day for Kariya begins with breakfast and an early morning workout six out of every seven days
he’s spent a lot of time studying investment and handles the finances for family members
he’ll spend an hour or two looking at investment papers and stock apps
something that he started learning during the 2004-05 NHL lockout
The NHL eventually lost that entire season because of the labor dispute
we were still hoping to play,” said Kariya
“so we’d rent ice for maybe three days a week and on the off days
There were probably 15 or 16 NHL players doing it
It’s one of those sports you could do for the rest of your life and never call yourself a master
Some guys can do it blindfolded but when you’re beginning
The ocean’s constantly moving and constantly changing
it was just a very appealing sport to try.”
Kariya learned to surf mostly by trial and error
Surfing’s not like golf or a sport where you get an instructor and you work on your swing
It’s an amazing experience to be sitting in the ocean and have dolphins swim by you that you can touch — or see a shark
serene atmosphere — and different from a sport where you’re trying to reach a goal
We’d have as much fun going out for breakfast after
Kariya is careful to stipulate that he is not “Riding Giants” or otherwise trying to catch the forbidding waves you see in some surfing documentaries
“California’s waves are much smaller than what you’re thinking about,” he said
“Where we learned and where we surf would be like a beginner’s surf
Your forearms and your shoulders and your core get really strong
and I don’t have to worry about getting injured
It’s not about trying to get the biggest wave
It’s about being in nature and getting good exercise
It’s like running and getting that runner’s high
Most surfers will tell you they’re a better person coming out of the water than they were before going in.”
Kariya calls the 2002 Olympic gold medal in Salt Lake City
“one of the greatest experiences of my life
‘You’re going to play on a line with Mario Lemieux and Steve Yzerman,’ I’d be like
‘No chance.’ It was just an incredible experience to be part of that team.”
What else about his hockey career does he remember fondly
“I don’t often think about things in my past unless I’m asked about them,” he answered
I’m more grateful for all the experiences I had — what I’ve been able to see and do
To make a great living playing a game I loved
“If I could go back to when I was 6 or 7 years old and someone had told me
‘This is going to be your life,’ there’s no way I would have believed it.”
We have discussed numerous times the importance Paul Kariya has played in the Anaheim Ducks franchise

it wouldn’t be appropriate for us to move forward without tipping out hats to one of the great
To most, October 16, 1974, might seem like an insignificant date. However, it marks the beginning of a legendary tale for the Anaheim Ducks. On that day, 46 years ago, Paul Kariya was born
and his achievements are to be commended and revered
there is only one place that will truly ever be his home
He will not only be remembered as a franchise cornerstone
for moments that no single word can describe
Forever memorialized in the rafters of Honda Center
generations will look up and remember the legend that once graced the ice
we look back with fondness at his career with the Anaheim Ducks
Kariya’s career with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim spanned 1994-2003. Within his first few years in the league, Kariya was paired with his forever best friend, Teemu Selanne
Kariya and Selanne formed what is probably one of the best scoring duos to play for the Anaheim Ducks franchise
Kariya’s star shone brighter amongst the elite
Nothing seemed to stop what would become one of the best players this game had ever seen
One of his finest moments was leading the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim to the Stanely Cup Playoffs in 1997
the Ducks were finally making their first playoff appearance
the Anaheim Ducks were on the brink of elimination
the 22-year-old Kariya led the way and saved his team from elimination
but he scored the overtime winner that would force the series to Game 7 and back to the Pond
Although they would lose in the second round to the Detroit Red Wings
the Mighty Ducks made an even deeper run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs
Kariya showed his overtime scoring prowess
in what would remain one of the most unlikely upsets in Stanley Cup Playoffs history
During Game 1 against the Detroit Red Wings
He would also go on to score the opening goal in Game 4
The Ducks had swept one of their biggest rivals
The road through Minnesota was rather easy
the Anaheim Ducks advanced to the Stanley Cup Final
Finally reaching the greatest stage in the NHL
it seemed as if nothing would stand in Paul Kariya’s way of finally winning the coveted Stanley Cup
something extremely critical would come into play
stopping Kariya from reaching that summit: concussions
none of them left as big of an impact as the concussion he received in Game 6 of the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals against the New Jersey Devils
After a reckless hit from Scott Stevens
everyone feared the worse when Kariya went down
it would be several seconds before he would finally breathe
Although I did not know who Paul Kariya was at the time
the unfamiliarity with the player didn’t stop me from feeling fear in my heart
Kariya came back to the game with a little less than 10 minutes left to play
shocked that our captain was coming back to the ice
The Anaheim Ducks already had the advantage over the New Jersey Devils
it looked like the Devils might find a way to end the miracle run
His presence on the bench along would have been enough to say that the Ducks were back in it
that gives the rest of the team an incentive to step up and force the series to a Game 7
there are no words adequate enough to describe the end of this story
With under three minutes remaining in Game 6
Everyone was hoping he would score a goal that would bring down the house
As Kariya was about to enter the Devils’ zone, I could imagine everyone was thinking that he would pull off a dipsy-do type goal, the one where he goes between his legs, or behind the back and just undresses Martin Brodeur
it would’ve been reminiscent of his early days
Kariya unleashed every ounce of anger in one heavy slap-shot that easily could’ve brought the house down
everyone who saw the telecast should remember the famous line coined by the great Gary Thorne
and all the greats who have and will play this game
no goal will have the same reverberating impact as Kariya’s infamous goal
feels the awe-inspiring emotion of watching our beloved captain rise from the ashes and do the unthinkable
We never want to see a player go through that ordeal
but the fact that Paul Kariya did it in the national spotlight on one of the biggest stages
was an incredible sight to see and will go down as one of the greatest goals not only in franchise history but of all time
It was a privilege to watch such a legend thrive under the California sun
The memories are forever imprinted on our hearts
it’s worth saying anyway on behalf of all Anaheim Ducks fans
You made the dreams of Mighty Ducks fans come to life
While you never had the chance to raise the cup
we all know that without you leading the way
this franchise wouldn’t be where they are today
Thank you for leading by example and playing with valor and courage
your legacy as a Mighty Ducks Captain will not be forgotten
will always be known as the one who protected the Pond

Grading the Anaheim Ducks 2020 Draft Selections
As Kariya was about to enter the Devils’ zone, I could imagine everyone was thinking that he would pull off a dipsy-do type goal, the one where he goes between his legs, or behind the back and just undresses Martin Brodeur
in a land of hockey giants at the 1993 NHL Draft in Quebec City.Chris Pronger (6-foot-6)
Chris Gratton (6-4) and Viktor Kozlov (6-4)
179) of the Columbus Blue Jackets is not as startling
Kariya's prime came at a time where size mattered more and getting to the net meant paying the price."He was doing all this
225 pounds and banging and crashing," said Steve Rucchin
who centered Kariya and Selanne in Anaheim."You could get away with a lot more stuff back then
How much easier would it be now for him to get to the net
Let's just say the numbers would even higher for him."Said Ferreira: "When I first saw [Kariya] play
But he turned out to be a goal-scorer more than a playmaker
now a senior adviser for the Los Angeles Kings
was hired by the Mighty Ducks a few months before he drafted Kariya
He and assistant GM Pierre Gauthier had traveled that spring to Worcester
to watch Kariya play in a NCAA regional game for Maine."We went to the game and he played two periods and I said to Pierre
"I don't what anybody to think I really like him."As the Ducks' first draft pick
Kariya was looked upon as the face of the franchise
21 assists) in 47 games as a rookie during the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season. In the first 59 games the following season
pulling off a blockbuster trade that brought Selanne from the Winnipeg Jets.In the final 29 games of that season
I was way too serious … in general too serious
more so off the ice than on the ice."Friends and relatives are often amused by the way Kariya and Selanne know exactly what the other is thinking.Kariya recently was giving a thoughtful answer about the pros and cons of taking a front-office position in the NHL
Selanne knew exactly where he was heading with the answer and got there before Kariya
there wouldn't be time for anything else," Selanne said."That's 100 percent
There's a big swell coming in and I'm going
who has tried to gauge Kariya's interest in a front-office job
is also a surfer and gets his passion for the water
He understands how Kariya goes all in once he makes up his mind or gets interested in something."We all surf
but none of us knows anything about our boards," Blake said
the thickness and the weight of the boards
It's just like he was with hockey."Kariya had two 100-point seasons and one 50-goal season
Considering that he played in a more restrictive era
Blake pondered how good Kariya would be if he played now."There was a time where he was as good as they come in the NHL," Blake said
Being elected to the Hall of Fame has afforded Kariya the time to reflect on his career and the people around him
So will Rucchin."That's the least I can do for what I put him through," Kariya said of his former center
He would be so tired after shifts."Rucchin didn't argue
He can hold his own with his former linemates in terms of sarcastic wit."I would have gladly taken some back-door [goals]
"Let's just say they're not going to the Selke Award Hall of Fame."Kariya's final game with the Mighty Ducks was Game 7 of the 2003 Stanley Cup Final
Rucchin was a teammate but Selanne was gone
having been traded to the San Jose Sharks on March 5
2001.Kariya and Selanne reunited with the Avalanche for the 2003-04 season in the hope of making a serious Cup run
Colorado also had Hall of Famers Joe Sakic
but the Avalanche struggled with injuries."I think we were in the lineup
"We played Chicago and beat them 5-0 opening night
But Paul hurt his wrist and Teemu hurt his knee and we were never had everybody back together
"He really enjoyed just being one of the guys," he said of Kariya
"I'm sure in Anaheim when people walked in
he was just in the group."Kariya then played two seasons with the Predators and finished his career with the Blues
The closest he came to winning the Stanley Cup was the 2003 run with the Mighty Ducks. In that Final
he took a thunderous hit from Devils defenseman Scott Stevens in Game 6 that knocked him out
He returned to score the game-winning goal
then played in Game 7.It was one of several hard hits Kariya took during his career
His final season was 2009-10; he took the following season off to recover from concussion symptoms
now it's seven years since I retired -- if I'm looking back on my career
I never look back at any of those hits," said Kariya
I look back at those great memories I had playing."He said his experience was no different than people having ups and downs in any sport or any career."If I had a magic wand and could wave the wand and go through the exact same thing
the good and the bad -- If I had the opportunity to do it again
Paul Kariya accomplished a lot during his professional hockey career
including election to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017
he will have another accolade to add to his hockey resume
Kariya will be featured in the sixth installment of the children’s book series “The Ice Chips,” authored by Roy and Kerry MacGregor
The premise of the novels revolves around time travel — a team of eight-year-olds goes into the past to visit the eight-year-old versions of their future hockey heroes
Not everyone can remember details about their eight-year-old selves
one of the most organized and thoughtful players of his generation
when we caught up with him at his Orange County
that’s where we started — what it’s like to be a featured character in a children’s story
I like the idea of an eight-year-old Paul Kariya being a fictional character in a children’s book
What was your first response when Roy MacGregor first pitched the idea to you
but my first reaction was: There must be hundreds – or even thousands – of players more interesting than me to write about
But I was honored that he would ask — and he sent me one of the past books
so I could have an idea of what he’s going for
I like the premise of the series: To go back in time to understand what someone – who would eventually gain a prominent place in the hockey world – was like as a kid
way before they had any sense of how their lives would turn out
Were there any clues in what you were doing at age eight that would have predicted the path you eventually followed
That’s actually how we started — what are the things that you want people to know about you at that age
And I was encouraged to do all of that by my parents
Kids at 10 or 12 are asked to be one-sport athletes
I’d maybe go to one hockey school in the summer
I played the sports in the season they were in — and when the seasons changed
Whatever the sport I was doing at the time was the sport that I was loving and concentrating on
I think it’s gone way too far the other way
where kids are too specialized and too early in their lives
And I think that not only hurts them as athletes
it inhibits them as human beings in terms of their growth
I think it’s actually even bad for the sport you’re in
so playing lacrosse teaches you how to roll off a check and how to handle body contact
You need to be able to shoot with both hands
so being ambidextrous – all those things help you with your hockey
that was the first thing I thought of that was different today from when I was eight
My parents always stressed that it’s important to play different sports
The conditioning you get swimming helps your hockey
Every sport helps you become better at your other sports
That’s important messaging for today’s parents and I would add this: That nobody
taking on a sport that doesn’t come naturally can teach important life lessons – that sometimes
and to be a part of a team and learn that team goals are always more important than individual goals
All those lessons you learn are valuable beyond sports
We both know that whatever the percentages are
the odds of someone becoming a professional athlete are very small
and you are asked to be a part of a company tennis or a golf tournament
learning those sports early can be really advantageous later in life
that’s what was important to me — and what helped me in life in terms of my athletics
I remember spending all my free time in the library
and trying to mimic him from the pictures I saw in the book
My father never played hockey and I was the first in our family to start
But my dad was such a great athlete that he learned how to play hockey himself in order to help us learn
There was also a how-to-play hockey book from Bobby Orr and I remember going through that with my father because he was learning hockey as well
The book had different drills you could do
there were instructional videos you could use
but we didn’t even have a VCR in our house until I was 14 or so
but we didn’t spend a lot of time in the house
the sport you happened to be playing at the time
there would always be a college basketball game on Saturday afternoons
so you’d watch Indiana or Duke play basketball
Some of my fondest memories are watching the Masters or the British Open with him
I really didn’t become 100 percent committed to hockey until I probably went to junior — that was when I was 15
We wound up going from wherever his boat was parked to an island where we got fish and chips
it was a long way and we waterskied the entire way
But I had skied starting way back in elementary school … so
That was the first time I’d ever waterskied
And that’s my point: All the sports build on each other
Even going from skiing to water skiing to surfing
I remember doing skating drills and carving the circles
and those cuts are the same moves you’re making when you’re skiing or waterskiing or surfing
whether the water is liquid or the water is frozen
But I remember that day with Paul Henry very well
I think we set a world record for the amount of fish and chips eaten
I know surfing has become one of your main passions now and it’s something that you learned as an adult
I would tell you: Surfing is one of the sports that has defeated me — I tried it as an adult and just couldn’t get it
The sports I do reasonably well are the ones I learned when I was young
I know you say there are transferable skills from one sport to another
learning a new physical activity as an adult
the most important thing about staying young and staying active is learning new things
I’m kind of the opposite of what you just said
Starting from zero and learning a new sport or a new skill
I really enjoy being a beginner again and going through the different developmental stages
I picked up snowboarding as an adult after I retired
but it’s actually quite different in a lot of ways too
I remember trying snowboarding for the first time with my brother — we were visiting my mom and just decided we wanted to try it
watched a couple of videos and then went out and snowboarded
his wife was a snowboard instructor growing up
she helped us get going in the right direction
It’s great for your brain and it’s great for your body
there are so many branches of surfing you can try
Even the best in the world – the Kelly Slaters of the world – they’re always trying to learn new things
Does that mean big-wave surfing is next on your to-do list
Where the jet ski tows you into a giant wave and then off you go
anything can happen at any time — but the risk/reward for that is too high
as opposed to trying to surf a 30- or even a 40-foot wave
one of the most important things about surfing is
where I’m getting into the waves under my own power
I once did a detailed story on NHLers who surf and I can’t remember if it was you or one of the other players that I interviewed who said that paddling out was one of the hardest elements of surfing and unbelievable exercise
We didn’t surf here for seven weeks or so because the beaches were closed
I hadn’t been surfing because of this virus
so my arms weren’t in proper surfing shape
having a pretty good time when a set came in
A set is when the waves are really big and really consistent
I saw the set coming and I had to get out there
or I was going to get crushed by all the waves
If you can imagine a wave building and peaking
I was just getting over the top of one wave and coming down the back of it and then I had to get over the next one
I was in a 100 percent sprint for eight waves in a row to get out – and I was gassed
getting out is just as hard as catching the wave back in
Just following up on the idea of taking up an activity as an adult
I remember you told me once – during the time you were recovering from a concussion – that you took up ballroom dancing
as a means of helping to rewire your brain a little
How far along did you get in ballroom dancing
But Val and I took lessons from Arthur Murray for about a year and a half
I’ll do a traditional workout – lifting weights
you’re the lead and so you have to remember the steps and the movements
I’ll go through the basic cadence and the steps
and that just keeps the brain aware and keeps it in the muscle memory
but if we’re watching “Dancing with the Stars,” I’ll say
“let’s do the rhumba.” Or “let’s do whatever.” And especially if you’re competitive
and it’s actually harder for the woman because she has to do it backward
we’d be going to the testing day and Val would be really nervous
and so if you have a little competitiveness in you
you don’t want to be holding the group back
It’s one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done
I always felt I had two left feet — no timing or rhythm
I would come out of there sweating physically
I felt like my brain was put through a chess match against a Grandmaster
To memorize all the steps and to be in tune with the music
very difficult — and totally foreign to me
It’s just 180 degrees different from anything else I’d ever done
That’s like another sport you can do for the rest of your life
It’s probably the most talked-about happening in Stanley Cup Finals history
It was in Game 6 of the Finals between the New Jersey Devils and the Anaheim Ducks that Scott Stevens destroyed Paul Kariya
who didn’t have a clue about what was coming
The hockey world was in shock as Kariya lay on the ice
The Devils and everyone watching were sure that Kariya would be out of the game
a perfect opportunity to close out the game
Kariya would never be allowed to return to the game
he’s said that he doesn’t remember anything about the rest of the series
He was so concussed he didn’t even know what was happening
he returned to the game shortly after the hit
and he even scored the game-winning goal in Game 6

The Devils went on to win the Cup after a win in Game 7
Mike Rupp was on that Cup-winning team and now shares the incredible story about what happened after Stevens’ bone-crushing hit
and the veterans all had a two-seat for themself,” he said on the Thats Hockey Talk podcast
”A lot of times the older veteran guys like to sit towards the front of the bus
because they don’t want to be back by the card game
We saw the animal of Scott Stevens on the ice
On this particular bus trip home from Game 6
Rupp ended up sitting just across from Stevens
who just hours earlier delivered one of the most vicious hits in Stanley Cup history
and it was probably the biggest hit I’ve ever seen
you’ll feel weird because someone could’ve died
I let up at the last second.’ I’m leaned over
”He saw at the last second that he had no idea he was there
’I didn’t give him that extra boom,’ he said

Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya are both going into the Hall of Fame
let’s reflect on their time with the Colorado Avalanche
Best friends from their time with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Paul Kariya, and Teemu Selanne decided in the summer of 2003 that it was time to reunite and make a push for the Stanley Cup with a team already oozing with talent. That team was the Colorado Avalanche
After losing in game 7 of the Stanley Cup final to the New Jersey Devils the previous spring
Kariya decided to move on from the only NHL team he ever knew
He left the Mighty Ducks as the team's all-time leader in games played (606)
Kariya decided he wanted to play with Selanne, who had been playing with the San Jose Sharks for the past two seasons
Both players were well on their way to the Hall of Fame when they decided to reunite in Colorado
With Kariya signing a one-year contract for below league average ($1.2m)
the duo joined an Avalanche team that had finished first in their division each of the eight years since moving from Quebec
Forsberg et al would be the best way to do it
Not only did they not win the Cup, the Avs failed to win the division for the first time ever. The immensely talented team finished outside of the top-3 in the Western Conference for the first time and fell to the San Jose Sharks in the second round of the playoffs
Selanne and Kariya can both look back at their year in Colorado as the worst of their careers
Teemu Selanne is a player that averaged a little over a point per game over his incredible 23-season career
the Finnish Flash had only 32 points in 78 games - that’s 0.41 points/game
Selanne returned after the lockout of 2004 rejuvenated scoring 184 points in the next two seasons
Though it’s a small footnote on one of the best careers in modern NHL history
the footnote in Colorado is one that Selanne - and Avs fans - would probably like to forget
it was the first season after the devastating hit he took from Scott Stevens - Kariya spoke recently about still having no memory of the hit or the goal he scored afterward
Kariya’s year with the Avalanche went a little better than Selanne’s
Kariya finished with four more points than Selanne
His .71 points per game were far more respectable
but still Kariya’s lowest total for any of the four teams he played with in his career
The bigger problem for Kariya - as with most of his career - was that he fought an injury that limited him to 51 games
After spraining his wrist early in the year
Kariya never really got on track and was more of a secondary presence than the star player the Avs thought they were getting
Kariya moved on to Nashville where he had a bounce-back season scoring 85 points
while Selanne went back to Anaheim where he went on to score 184 points over the next two seasons
Both Selanne and Kariya are more than deserving to be inducted into the Hall of Fame
They are two of the most talented players of their generation and the fact that they’re going in together is absolutely perfect
Something that surely can’t be said about their brief time in Denver
The Zoom meeting at Jump Crypto was always running
The Chicago-based financial firm Jump Trading had made its name in the shadowy world of high-frequency trading during the early 2000s “Flash Boys” era
and torso—into the volatile cryptocurrency sector
The firm had become a kind of silent partner for one of the most high-profile projects in crypto
an algorithmic stablecoin called TerraUSD that was meant to maintain a $1 peg through a complex mechanism tied to a related cryptocurrency called Luna—a careful dance that Jump helped coordinate on the backend by fulfilling trades
But despite the bluster of Terra’s swaggering founder
Jump stood to make millions on its deal with Terraform Labs
the TerraUSD developer—or the whole thing could quickly collapse
So he hopped onto the crypto team’s always-on Zoom meeting
a 25-year-old recent intern who was rising through the ranks of the digital assets division
according to an employee’s later court testimony
Jump secretly bought up huge tranches of TerraUSD to create the appearance of demand and restore the coin’s value to $1
meaning he agreed to deliver 65 million tokens of Luna to Jump at just $0.40
Jump ultimately made $1 billion from that agreement alone
the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) would later state
The operation had allowed Terra to maintain its facade of stability: As Jump was restoring the peg behind the scenes, Kwon was boasting on Twitter that the stablecoin had naturally recovered
one Terra employee acknowledged in a text message that “if Jump hadn’t stepped in
And the collapse kicked off a chain reaction across crypto
one that would in November 2022 topple Sam Bankman-Fried’s once seemingly infallible exchange
and fuel a global outcry over the excesses and lack of controls in the crypto world
but much of that will likely not be paid because Terraform filed for bankruptcy earlier this year
Kwon still faces criminal charges with the Department of Justice (DOJ) pending extradition from Montenegro
and Terraform did not respond to a request for comment
Though Jump was not charged with any crimes
the eminent firm’s dealings with Kwon were seen as
its trade secrets outed in the most ignoble of settings
The Jump whistleblower’s testimony in a New York federal courthouse in March 2024 marked an almost unthinkable nadir for Jump’s foray into the volatile world of crypto
and a Jump spokesperson declined to make any executives available or comment on the record for this story
Fortune spoke with more than two dozen former employees
and found that many would only speak on condition of anonymity
Even if Jump’s activity in crypto has waned
it remains one of the most powerful players in the space
commanding hundreds of millions of dollars
View this interactive chart on Fortune.com
the Jump saga echoes many of the familiar tropes woven into the blockchain industry
But Jump was something different—an established titan of traditional finance (“TradFi” in crypto parlance) that thought it could command the nascent space
the trading firm learned the same painful lesson as everyone else who thought they could outsmart the gravity of market systems
“The history of finance was written in the blood of investors.”
Jump Trading has become a respected fixture of Chicago’s storied financial scene
But the 18-year-old Kariya had no reason to have ever heard of the enigmatic firm when he arrived at the campus of the University of Illinois in 2014
after touring a couple of universities during a trip to Disneyland when he was 13
“The infrastructure and the quality of education seemed very appealing,” he said
“The college campuses all had computers.”
Kariya had landed a prestigious internship at Jump Trading
where he rose quickly in the heyday of crypto
Kariya’s name is as well-known in crypto circles as Jump’s
That’s partly because Jump’s other executives have made a point of staying out of the spotlight while thrusting Kariya into it
as president of a newly launched Jump Crypto division in 2021
with his mop of black hair and drooping handlebar mustache that makes him look like a cowboy coder
was ubiquitous—all over lists of tech up-and-comers and the panel lineups for crypto conferences
And as crypto markets came tumbling down in 2022
Kariya became the baby-faced symbol of the missteps of his firm
that inspired their firm’s future name) DiSomma and Gurinas watched the electronic trading revolution consume the world around them
They became determined to get their own slice of the action
As the author Michael Lewis would chronicle in Flash Boys
his 2014 book on the rise of high-frequency trading
companies like Jump—alongside its competitors
from Jane Street to Citadel—became defined by their secrecy
Their edge was technology: having minuscule advantages over their rivals in how fast they could complete trades or spot inefficiencies in any type of market
And they guarded these strategies with feverish devotion
recalls signing an NDA just to get through the front doors of Jump’s headquarters in the Montgomery Ward building
an old factory on the banks of the Chicago River—even though he was only there to request sponsorship of a badge for a local Boy Scouts troop
(Jump politely declined to participate.) “They just don’t let people in their office,” Lothian tells Fortune
Jump’s foray into crypto was shaped by this culture of secrecy: The firm began dabbling in the sector as a kind of testing ground for its interns that kept them siloed from its main business
according to former employees and other people familiar with the firm’s operations
In late 2015, Jump had created a research and development office at its founders’ alma mater
sponsoring research projects and working with professors on futuristic projects
like using virtual reality headsets to mimic trading environments
They would also hire university students as interns
who started as a student at Jump’s college satellite
The firm needed to test the mettle of its would-be staffers—whether they could parse the nuances in financial markets and translate them into algorithmic trading models
But it couldn’t give the temporary hires the keys to the kingdom
with its proprietary strategies and billions of dollars in capital
but it was separated enough from Jump’s world of stocks and bonds that it wouldn’t pose a threat
“It was a bit of a toy market,” says one former employee
who spoke with Fortune on the condition of anonymity to discuss their previous firm
The crypto kids weren’t left entirely out in the cold
DiSomma was intrigued by crypto’s promise to create decentralized markets
The nascent sector’s enthusiasts believe that blockchain technology could eliminate middlemen like brokers and clearing houses altogether
a trailblazer in the revolution of electronic trading
which had already advanced markets from shouting bids in crowded pits of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange to computers sending information at unfathomable speeds
welcomed the potential for another major paradigm shift
So when Kariya joined as an intern in January 2017, he was assigned to build early crypto trading infrastructure for the firm—with little oversight. “We could just go out and do our own thing,” he would tell a podcast in January 2023
“Work under this fully encapsulated bubble.”
Bitcoin had its first mainstream breakthrough
growing from under $1,000 at the beginning of 2017 to close to $20,000 in December
Jump’s crypto team rose in the ranks at the firm to become one of its best-performing desks at the peak
It was becoming clear that crypto was more than just a toy for interns to play with
And soon after the Bitcoin bubble finally burst in 2018
Kariya graduated and joined the Jump team full-time
High-frequency firms like Jump are shrouded in a veil of mystique
but their main form of trading is called "market making." When people go to exchanges
they need counterparties to either buy from or sell to
These market-maker firms function as middlemen—the main vehicle for buying and selling
the spread on each trade may be tiny—cents per share—but at the massive scale that algorithmic systems allow
it can be an eye-poppingly lucrative business
market making is a strictly controlled practice with firewalls of regulation ensuring there is no conflict of interest
Rather than partnering directly with companies that issue equities
market makers work with exchanges under the oversight of regulatory agencies
Companies that perform different functions
such as market making and venture investing
will often separate the entities to avoid any possibilities of insider trading or market manipulation
it was not restricted by those pesky protections built up over decades
you don’t have that direct supervision,” says Michael Selig
an attorney at the law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher focused on digital assets
crypto market makers sign deals with token projects
often helping them get listed on exchanges and then drive buying and selling by creating liquidity
which attracts traders looking for the next hot coin—and a flood of cash
token projects will lend market makers a large supply of tokens so they can kickstart trading
which gives the market makers the right to buy a chunk of the tokens for a steep discount if the project goes well
Selig says that the inverted structure in crypto—where market makers work with token projects
given projects’ need to spur trading activity
It also creates dynamics that would never be allowed in TradFi
While crypto market makers still make money off the trading spreads
the massive windfalls often come from those lucrative call options
becoming the market maker for a token project meant unlimited upside with no real financial risk
you decide which one is going to win,” one crypto exchange founder tells Fortune
speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss industry dynamics
Although other companies from traditional finance were beginning to dabble in crypto—Jump’s Chicago trading rival
set up a blockchain division called Cumberland in 2014
for example—Jump quickly established itself as the main global liquidity provider in the sector
both through market making on exchanges and over-the-counter trading
which are generally higher-ticket transactions with more established players
so did its token deals—and its appetite for gains
which meant that the firm might invest in a crypto company while also serving as the market maker for the project’s token
While the divisions were technically separate
even when the digital assets venture team was folded into Jump Crypto in 2021
the conversations would start with the same business development representatives
“The line between their VC and trading business was impossible to discern from the outside,” says the exchange founder
who met with Jump representatives about potential deals
Such an arrangement would be anathema in traditional finance
Jump wasn’t the only firm profiting from call options in the largely unregulated sector
But while other market makers would ask for one or two percent of the total token supply
Jump would often ask for five percent—or higher—according to people familiar with the deals
“That’s an awful lot of ammunition for them to mess around with,” says one crypto founder
who tried negotiating a market-making deal with Jump in 2021
and asked for anonymity to discuss private negotiations
“You can end up with perverse incentives.”
Still, Jump carried a gravitas. The firm represented buy-in from the world of TradFi years before BlackRock applied for its Bitcoin ETF
Even if Jump's requirements for call options on token market making felt like “rip your face off deals” for budding companies
“You were made to feel like you were stupid if you didn’t want to accept their deal,” says the founder
Even as Jump became known for its sharp elbows in dealmaking
Kanav Kariya presented an appealing face for the operation
projecting a kind of whiz-kid credibility—a necessity in crypto in a way it never was in TradFi
either in the trenches of Twitter or the backrooms of conferences
and Jump needed someone to look the part and help negotiate deals
“They were trying to jive with the younger crowd,” said one crypto trader at a rival firm
In an industry dominated by eccentric and often bellicose personalities, Kariya carries himself with a quiet authority. In YouTube interviews, he comes across as weary but engaged, speaking with a slight Mumbai accent and wry smile. In one from 2021
Kariya said that he benefited from the more individualistic society in the U.S.
that because all of Jump’s trading is automated by algorithms
he had no view of where markets were headed
“Don’t ask me what the price of anything is going to be 10 seconds in the future,” he joked
It’s perhaps no wonder that he looked tired: Kariya had been busy during his years at Jump
helping to build trading systems and grow the crypto team to over 150 people
was devoting much of its resources to crypto
with the firm backing high-profile projects like Solana
Do’s bombastic approach appeared to be another model
one of Kariya’s top deputies was exchanging emails with the head of public relations at Terraform Labs about getting Kariya more exposure
Bill DiSomma was still pulling most of the strings at Jump Crypto
according to later testimony by the whistleblower who went to the SEC
“He ran that team,” Hunsaker told prosecutors
was more in charge of business development
“He was kind of the public face of Jump Crypto,” Hunsaker said
it was all going swimmingly: Jump was everywhere
It partnered with FTX to build a decentralized exchange on Solana called Serum and tried to invest in the international exchange
where it operated as one of the top market makers
with the understanding that Jump would also serve as a liquidity provider on the exchange
although FTX.US balked at the aggressive terms
according to people familiar with the discussions
who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private negotiations
A spokesperson for Jump declined to comment
Jump was not only market making and investing—it was also incubating its own projects
including a so-called bridge named Wormhole that would connect different blockchains and their tokens
The projects each served a purpose: In this case
Jump had amassed a cache of different cryptocurrencies
and there wasn’t a large enough market to absorb them all
“It really arose out of a necessity,” said one person familiar with the project
For all the excitement around Jump Crypto’s myriad efforts
a cocksure Stanford grad born in South Korea
Terraform promised to be crypto’s killer app—the long-awaited use case that would onboard actual people and not just blockchain enthusiasts
combined with protocols that offered yields as high as 20%
Terraform seemed a safe way for casual investors to dabble in crypto
It amassed over a million users across the world
(Terraform did not respond to a request for comment.)
Jump Crypto never invested directly in Terraform as a traditional equity
and developed an admiring rapport with him
The Terraform founder was just a few years his senior
but he had carved out a bully pulpit on the tumultuous arena of Crypto Twitter
becoming a brash presence in a cohort that included up-and-comers such as Sam Bankman-Fried
Kariya and Kwon would text on the encrypted messaging platform Signal
alternating between business plans and banter
“I think I’m going to have to get a dog named Terra by the end of this year too,” Kariya texted in February 2021
“Hope you get carry from this,” Kwon added
referring to Kariya making money from Jump’s Luna position
“Better than just making bill [DiSomma] slightly richer lol.”
The full details of the business arrangement between Jump and Terraform wouldn’t emerge until years later
when the SEC filed its lawsuit against Terraform and Kwon in early 2023
The commission laid out a damning case that Jump was not acting as a neutral market maker
Its financial prospects were tied to Terraform’s success through a lucrative call option if trading reached a certain volume
along with having insider access to Terraform’s operations
creating the type of conflict of interest that market structure regulation in TradFi seeks to avoid
A spokesperson for Jump declined to comment on this
James Hunsaker was on that fateful always-open Zoom meeting in May 2021
when TerraUSD’s peg failed for the first time and Kariya and DiSomma made the deal to defend it
netting the firm over a billion dollars and allowing Kwon to pretend that everything had gone according to plan
as TerraUSD collapsed and investors lost billions
Hunsaker decided the public had a right to know
(He also had around $200,000 of his own money in the failed stablecoin.)
After failing to gain traction through anonymous Reddit posts and leaking information to an influential Twitter account called FatMan Terra
Hunsaker approached the SEC through its whistleblower program
Jump’s involvement in the Terra collapse would remain hidden from the public for almost a year
had suffered a $325 million hack in February 2022
which Jump quickly stepped in to backfill (and eventually managed to mostly recover)
The firm likely lost north of a billion dollars on Terra’s ultimate collapse
there were reports that Jump had nearly $300 million trapped on the exchange
although the creditor list released by the bankruptcy estate remains anonymous
Kariya still dutifully played the part of Jump Crypto frontman, appearing on industry podcasts to profess bewilderment over the rampant fraud exposed at FTX. “It’s fair to say we were mad,” he told one in February 2023
He would eventually retreat from the public eye, however. In May 2023, the SEC filed new documents that revealed Jump as the trading firm that had secretly propped up Terra
was deposed by agency prosecutors a few months later
Jump no longer cuts the figure it once did in crypto
And as crypto markets have come roaring back in recent months
Its engineers quietly continue to tinker with in-house projects
including a key Solana initiative called Firedancer
Jump also continues to make venture investments in crypto firms
and Lava Network—though at a much more lethargic clip than previously
and it has not escaped the notice of people across the crypto world that Jump has exited the token market-making game
no longer making the kind of lucrative deals that netted the firm billions
When the Bitcoin ETFs launched in January, Jump opted out of participating as a liquidity provider
the firm spun off two of its flagship projects
to serve as a market maker for its token when it launched in April 2024 with a trading volume over $1 billion
according to a person familiar with the matter
A heavy regulatory cloud hangs over Jump, though it has not been charged with any crimes. When the DOJ filed its own complaint against Do Kwon in March 2023, it mentioned Jump’s role in the 2021 peg incident. Meanwhile, as Fortune first reported in June
the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is investigating Jump’s crypto business
And that cloud may be spreading to some of Jump’s brethren: Bloomberg reported last year that prosecutors had scrutinized for possible market manipulation the group chat conversations of employees at Jump and Jane Street in May of 2022 about a potential bailout of TerraUSD (which did not happen)
A photo taken at Kariya’s SEC deposition on the 2021 incident shows a face unrecognizable from his early days at Jump
He looks older than his years—shell-shocked and exhausted
the comparisons to Do Kwon and Sam Bankman-Fried were inevitable
but Kariya never quite fit the mold of his scandalous counterparts
“I don't think anyone thought he was a slimy person,” says one
“My impression was that he was the fall guy.”
On June 24, a few days after Fortune reported on the CFTC investigation of Jump
announced his departure from the firm that had turned him into a crypto celebrity
“Today marks the end of an incredible personal journey for me,” he wrote on X
a moment I’m receiving with both a heavy heart and great excitement about the road ahead.” People close to Kariya said that both sides had long been planning his exit
Although he posted that he would stay “engaged” with portfolio companies
And the story of Jump’s rise and fall in crypto serves as a kind of cautionary tale
The firm tried to come into crypto as a kingmaker
wielding its depth of TradFi experience while taking advantage of the lack of regulation in the space
It wanted to be everything to everybody: a Chicago-style high-frequency shop
But ultimately “they were still too much of a trading firm,” was the assessment of one rival
Jump likely netted money from its crypto escapades
it’s a comedown: High-frequency trading firms thrive by focusing always on their next trade
Hunsaker, the whistleblower, left in February of 2022 to found his own crypto company, Monad, with a former Jump Crypto coworker. They raised $225 million in April at a $3 billion valuation

Kariya was determined to make a name for himself at a professional level
Paul Kariya made his first debut with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim against the Edmonton Oilers
Nevertheless, the 20-year-old quickly skated into the hearts of the fans. He scored his first goal the very next night against the Winnipeg Jets (and Teemu Selanne.) This set the tone for his break out season
he lived up to the hype of being a first-round draft pick
The Mighty Ducks struggled significantly in the 1994-95 season
winning only 16 of their 48 games in regulation
The 37 points they procured throughout the season
without the fresh approach that Paul Kariya brought to the team
the Mighty Ducks would have ended the season in even worse shape
The nerves that came with playing his first NHL game quickly dissipated
Although his NHL debut in Edmonton ended in a loss
Paul Kariya was determined to score his first goal
the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim made their second stop in a back to back in Winnipeg to face off against the Jets
Rolling out one of the most powerful forward lines in the NHL with Keith Tkachuk
the Winnipeg Jets were looking to redeem themselves from the previous season
Fresh off a 3-3 tie against the Calgary Flames the night before
they were looking for their first win of the season
The game was relatively quiet during the opening period aside from a few penalties
The score remained at 0-0 at the end of the first
Both teams entered the second-period determined to be the first to gain the advantage and score a goal
the Winnipeg Jets put the first point on the scoreboard on a goal from Keith Tkachuk
the Mighty Ducks would quickly take the lead after scoring two goals within two minutes of each other
Anaheim took back the lead and defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-3
This was just the first of many Kariya goals during the 1994-95 season. Early in the season, he held the scoring lead among all NHL rookies. His lead, however, ended prematurely when Peter Forsberg surpassed him
he ended his first NHL season successfully
leading the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim with 18 goals and 39 points
Paul Kariya entered into his sophomore season with the Mighty Ducks
there were monumental expectations that Paul Kariya would deliver another phenomenal season
Not only did he have another extraordinary season
but he also blew his record from the previous season out of the water
Paul Kariya delivered the best season of his entire NHL career
Making an appearance in all 82 regular season games
The Anaheim Ducks of today should be taking notes from their predecessor
Kariya was swift and electrifying out on the ice
His 20 PP goals made up 1/3 of Mighty Ducks total power-play goals for the entire season
Steve Rucchin was second on the team in points that season
His 19 goals and 25 assists gave him a total of 44 points
This just goes to show how unbelievably talented Paul Kariya was during the 1995-96 season
all had at least four seasons of experience on Paul Kariya
His performance during the season made him a shoe-in for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
Kariya was honored with this accolade due to his ability to exhibit the best sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with his high standard and playing ability
He also made his first appearance at the NHL All-Stars
this paved the way for Kariya to make four other NHL All-Star appearances in the future
After the 1995-96 season, Randy Ladouceur announced his retirement
After two successful seasons with the Mighty Ducks
it came as no surprise when Paul Kariya was named as his successor
the youngest captain to be named in Mighty Ducks franchise history
the young left-wing accomplished quite a feat
Although he did not surpass the 100 point mark again
he still had an impressive season with 44 goals and 55 assists
Paul Kariya was the first captain in franchise history to lead the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim to the playoffs
the Ducks went on to defeat the Arizona Coyotes in the Western Conference Quarter Finals
the Red Wings swept the Mighty Ducks and knocked them out of the playoffs
He spent most of the 1997-98 season on the sidelines after he failed to come to contract terms with the Mighty Ducks
A concussion he received during a game with the San Jose Sharks prolonged his absence
Kariya again led the Mighty Ducks to their second franchise playoff appearance against the Detroit Red Wings
it takes much more than raw talent to lead a team
In his seven seasons as the Mighty Ducks captain
The name Paul Kariya is often mentioned in tandem with the Finnish Flash himself
The pair is one of the most iconic duos in Anaheim Ducks history
The two played together as Mighty Ducks from 1996-2001
Teemu Selanne was acquired by Anaheim on February 7
The two found instant chemistry with linemate
the dynamic duo has a combined total of 972 points (450g
522a.) During Paul Kariya’s first six seasons as captain
Teemu Selanne served as one of his alternate captains
He even stepped in during the 1997-98 season when Kariya spent most of the season on the sidelines
Their chemistry on the ice is what the pair is known for
It is undeniable that these two were better together than they were apart
these two led the team not only on the ice but off the ice as well
Although the two of them have very different personalities and are often dubbed the oddest pair
always pushing themselves to go above and beyond for their team
they stop short of competing with each other
A lot of people attribute Paul Kariya’s success to Teemu Selanne
His first stint with the Mighty Ducks was definitely enhanced by the creativity and youthful dynamics of Kariya
They were both aware of a very self-evident truth: individual success isn’t going to help your team win
Paul Kariya’s greatest accomplishment with the franchise came during the 2002-03 season
The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim finished the season with a 40-27-9-6 record
Their success earned them the second place spot in the Pacific Division
The next stop was the Stanley Cup Playoffs
Their first opponents were their rivals from Detroit
being swept by the Wings in his previous two playoff appearances
the roles were reversed and the Mighty Ducks swept Detroit in the Conference Quarter Finals
defeating the Dallas Stars (4-2) in the Conference Semi-Finals and sweeping the Minnesota Wild in the Conference Finals
the Anaheim Ducks were on their way to the Stanley Cup Finals
the series was sent to Game 6 after the New Jersey Devils defeated them 6-3 in Game 5
They had one last chance to tie it up and hopefully go on to win in Game 7
The dreaded Game 6 that stood before them was their last hope at finally bringing the Cup to California
Anaheim took an early lead after two goals from Steve Rucchin and a power play goal from Steve Thomas
but the Mighty Ducks held firm to their 3-1 lead
one of the most terrifying moments in Anaheim Ducks history happened at 13:47 of the second period
Paul Kariya cut through the middle, right towards Scott Steven‘s side
never saw Steven’s coming at him on the right
one of the most feared open ice hitters in the NHL at the time
one of the most dynamic skaters in the league was reduced to almost nothing
he got up off the ice and retreated to the Anaheim locker room
When the reality that Paul Kariya’s season was likely over
It was time to put their heads together and pull through
Shocking the entire NHL world, Paul Kariya emerged from the locker room just a few minutes later ready to lead his team to victory. A turnover at the Mighty Ducks blueline turned into one of the most prolific moments in franchise history. Petr Sykora passed the puck to his left as Paul Kariya picked up speed and rocketed past
Winding up for a slapshot, Kariya let it go outside the top circle. His shot went under the far crossbar, beating the Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur
Paul Kariya defied all odds and gave the Ducks a three-goal lead
that was the closest he would ever come to winning the Stanley Cup
the Devils came back and won in the Cup-deciding game
Kariya would never play with the Mighty Ducks again
and he never had the chance to win the cup with any of his other teams
After the devastating blow of losing the Stanley Cup Finals to the New Jersey Devils
Paul Kariya vowed that he would be back in Anaheim the following season
Reaching UFA status at the end of the 2002-03 season
Kariya’s $10M per-year contract needed to be renegotiated
Tragedy struck the Mighty Ducks organization and fan base when it was announced that their beloved left wing had agreed to terms with the Colorado Avalanche
the two of them had their eyes on one thing; the Stanley Cup
The Colorado team was chalked full of raw talent and Cup-winning potential
It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to play with skaters like Philip Forsberg and Joe Sakic
many Anaheim Duck’s fans were bitter towards Kariya
he never returned to the franchise and fell out of favor with the fans for many years
It was reported that Kariya required a $10M qualifying offer from the Mighty Ducks organization
it is still unknown what sparked Kariya to move on from the Mighty Ducks
A player wouldn’t simply leave the only team he’s ever known and take a pay cut that large for no reason
we still do not know exactly why Kariya and the Ducks failed to come to terms on his last contract
Perhaps he felt like his contributions were not being appreciated
Maybe he just wanted the chance to play alongside his dearest friend again
We may never know the real reason behind his departure and we’re just going to have to live with that
believe that Kariya did not leave for selfish reasons
His constant bend towards humility leads me to believe otherwise
the game-winning formula the Colorado Avalanche thought they had
After a short stint with the Nashville Predators
Paul Kariya found himself in the Gateway to the West
his career with Blues didn’t end like he thought it would
On December 6, 2009, Paul Kariya suffered his sixth concussion after Patrick Kaleta‘s elbow made contact with his head during a contest against the Buffalo Sabres
due to suffering from post-concussion syndrome
Post-concussion syndrome is a mild form of a traumatic brain injury (TBI.) It causes symptoms such as headaches
he came to the startling realization that his brain was only functioning in the 25th percentile
Paul Kariya hung up his skates after the 2009-10 season
All of Kariya’s concussions caused serious repercussions
He suffers from a slight case of memory loss
Paul has since come out and said that he does not remember his infamous “off the floor
he does not remember what happened before the hit
Nor does he remember what happened after he got back up
he has taken up ballroom dancing and exercises his mind with brain puzzles
Their lack of discipline when it came to life-altering injuries such as TBI’s was alarming
his heart has once against softened towards the sport he loves and the league that made him a start
still prefer to spend most his time out of the spotlight
he has only been in attendance at two NHL games
The first being Teemu’s final game with the Anaheim Ducks and the second the night he was honored by the Anaheim Ducks for being inducted into the NHL hall of fame
his heart brought him back to the city that he loved
He has taken up surfing as a therapeutic pass time
he was out catching waves when he received the call that he was one of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s 2017 inductees
It is an incredible honor for any player to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame
but to be inducted alongside your friend and former teammate is an experience of a lifetime
It is even more incredible that two former players from the Anaheim Ducks are being honored as inductees at the same time
Although Paul Kariya is mostly remembered as the player who was forced to retire due to his many concussions
he changed the NHL world in a miraculous way
he was living proof that you don’t need to be a big or physical player to make an impact on the ice
and explosive talent are what led Kariya to become one of the best play makers in Anaheim Ducks history
Paul Kariya was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 13
to experience this alongside two of the best players in Anaheim Ducks history
Despite the backlash Paul has received from some of the Anaheim Ducks fans
he deserved the honor of being memorialized in the HHOF
his impact on the NHL world will be remembered
a bright-eyed teenage boy’s dreams came true when he was the first player in franchise history drafted by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim
The Anaheim Ducks and Ducks Nation have watched him grow
and we have seen him leave his mark on us and on the world
25 years later during this important milestone
that Paul Kariya is the second number to be raised to the rafters at Honda Center

Number 8 and 9 will hang beside each other for years to come
as they did during their days with the Mighty Ducks
The ceremony begins at Honda Center at on Sunday
prior to the Anaheim Ducks vs Buffalo Sabres game

It is wonderful to see that Paul Kariya is finally getting the recognition he rightfully deserves
