I’d met engineer/musician Toshi Kasai and Melvins drummer Dale Crover when they spotted me at a NAMM Show years ago. We had a blast chatting, and while editing the Melvins' interview for this issue I realized I’d better get Toshi’s perspective on his long collaboration with the band and his studio that they share
I’d met engineer/musician Toshi Kasai and Melvins drummer Dale Crover when they spotted me at a NAMM Show years ago. We had a blast chatting, and while editing the Melvins ' interview for this issue I realized I’d better get Toshi’s perspective on his long collaboration with the band and his studio that they share
I came here in ‘97 and went to a recording school called Los Angeles Recording Workshop
I became good friends with their office guys there
and they sent me a bunch of internships at a few studios and smaller record labels
I worked at the school too a little bit as a tutor and then a substitute teacher
because I had more pressure to know everything
Then I ended up at a studio called Hook [Sound Studios] for seven years
but the engineer there didn’t work with me; he did his own thing
who’d produced Michael Bolton and Christopher Cross
I worked with big names and big-time producer/engineers
Hook had an excellent microphone collection
What techniques did you pick up from other engineers working there
I was focused on producing techniques more than engineering
I was hugely influenced by Mark Endert; he’d recorded Fiona Apple
He was one of the biggest clients and an amazing engineer
It’s more about people connections than technique
Making the musicians feel comfortable and allowing them to feel freedom during the creative process
Why don’t you try this?” I learned from both sides
That was an amazing experience at the studios
To see different people working and producing has got to be invaluable
Yes. For example, when I worked with Eddie Kramer [ Tape Op #24 ]
I was very inspired by not only his recording technique but also his enthusiasm and concentration towards the project
and he was running around the studio to find the best wah pedal for a guitar part on a song
Meeting the Melvins happened after working with Tool
Then the Melvins introduced me to thousands of people
I learned the attitude of being a musician
Musicians are some of the most eccentric characters to deal with
I learned to pick up on what they want and need to musically express themselves
In those seven years at Hook I gained confidence with this
Once you worked with the Melvins you guys hit it off
What was it about them and their music and the personalities that works between all you guys
That attitude totally mirrored my idea of making music
I don’t know how many times I wanted to quit
I was in my late 20s or 30s and I’d have to run for 21-year-old kids
“Why am I doing this?” Then the Melvins showed up and it was like
Adam lives pretty close to my apartment where I used to live
Successful collaborations in the studio aren’t only focused on the act of recording
“Don’t work with friends.” I understand that’s something that can happen
I don’t have the mentality to not hang out with a client
If someone’s coming to you and you like the music and you enjoy them as people
What were the years like between quitting Hook and starting up Sound of Sirens studio
We used to go to a studio in Hollywood called Westbeach Recorders
My old roommate used to work at Entourage Studios in North Hollywood
Those are the main two studios I used to use
Westbeach had a Trident; they only had one room
but [were equipped with] decent microphones
Bands that were influenced by the Melvins
I enjoy producing new bands; to give them a guide
The first period after I became a freelancer was hard
because everybody wanted to be the Melvins
I’m not only into heavy music; I like music that pushes existing boundaries and genre definitions
I recorded a band called Tweak Bird; they have two brothers [Caleb and Ashton Bird] with strong vocals
People started getting that my forte is not only heavy
My studio has such a high demand that they come to me from all over the world
I have also traveled to other countries to produce
What year did you guys put together Sound of Sirens studio
I found it by myself almost eight years ago
and he helped finance making the walls and more
The only thing is that rehearsal time; we have to schedule a little bit
During the summer they’re gone and I don’t need to worry about a schedule conflict
Change the heads and make sure a rough drummer’s not going to play
The studio’s based around tracking into digital
That’s the legendary “they looked at the Neve and tried to copy it” console
My friend, Avedis [Kifedjian Tape Op #132 ]
this is good.” I trust him; he used to fix our gear at Hook
He told me what to buy and what to not buy
Was it a lot of work to build up a mic collection
After working at Hook and handling mics like a Telefunken [ELA M] 251
Oh, yes. The guys from Heil Microphones have been nice to me [Bob Heil, Tape Op #67 ]
Then we used to have a connection to Shure
The drum sounds have a nice ambience in your recordings
so if you take the material off the walls it’s pretty live
Before the Melvins I didn’t for a year and a half
and then I built one because I didn’t want to wear headphones
I’d go to a big studio and sometimes we didn’t finish
so we’d overdub at the Melvins’ rehearsal studio
Every time I tried to record sirens came by
“Listen to the sound of the sirens.” That’s how we named the studio
I know from the interview with the Melvins that there’s a cubbyhole area where you have a bass amp and a guitar cabinet for isolation
a box so I don’t need to hear the guitar sound too loud
Usually it’s friends of friends and word of mouth
I heard the album.” That was a long time ago
I have to do Instagram and that kind of thing to say
“I worked on this and produced it.” Self-promoting
people are very curious about who they’ve worked with
I have been fortunate with clients coming from those sources
I listened through your catalog and could hear certain aesthetic decisions
such as stereo guitars and very defined drums
I want to feel like the audience feels like when watching Stanley Kubrick movies
Sometimes I hate a heavy guitar because it takes up so much space
Do you think a way for making space is doubling guitar and panning left and right to keep the center open for vocals
I always like when I go left side and then go right side and it sounds so different; it’s an amazing ear candy or illusion
I always want to entertain with my engineering somehow
I like the drums in one side sometimes too; a ‘60s mix
You played live with the Melvins and Big Business
I feel we bring that back to producing and engineering other people
I’ve worked a lot with the guy from Helmet
so it’s easy to work with you.” I didn’t think about that
Musicians are some of the most creative people to work with
Yeah, sometimes it’s still happening. A new band comes in, and I’ll say, “Why don’t you punch in?” “What do you mean, you don’t like it?” “No, I love it, but you can do better! You can execute better. That’s a great idea!” Some people are super insecure. You’ve gotta be careful. The Melvins guys are confident
In their interview they say they know how to read you and what it means when you say

Noriaki Kasai - Leaping into Olympic HistoryJapan's evergreen ski jumper Noriaki Kasai makes Olympic history by competing in his eighth successive Winter Games at the age of 45
No athlete has appeared at more Winter Games than Kasai's eight, and he won his first Olympic medal at Lillehammer 1994
soaring to silver for Japan in the large hill team event behind Germany
Kasai’s previous World Cup appearance was 11 months ago in Planica, Slovenia, where he became the oldest points scorer at the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup aged 51 years 290 days.
He is therefore a Guinness World Records holder six times over. On top of the records mentioned above, Kasai became the oldest individual World Cup medallist aged 44 years and 293 days old in 2017.
Kasai also holds the record for the most appearances in FIS Nordic World Ski Championships by an individual ski jumper (13), and became the oldest Ski Jumping World Cup event winner at 42 years and 176 days.

And when presented with his new record certificates last year
Kasai said: "I still had a lot left in me
So my intention is to keep on with it until 60."
Kasai did not initially qualify for the World Cup outright after placing fourth in the national championships back in October
meaning he has largely competed on the second-tier FIS Continental Cup circuit this season
he will get another World Cup appearance under his belt
meaning at least one record will be extended – with the potential for more should he score points
with the 2022 Beijing gold medallist out to place on a World Cup podium for the very first time this season
he may well turn to teammate Kasai for advice

ALP as transplant predictors after surgery
Children with biliary atresia who have higher blood levels of the matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP-7) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzymes at the time of a standard Kasai procedure are at an increased risk of needing a liver transplant
A combination of blood levels of these two enzymes was able to predict the need for a liver transplant with a 92.6% accuracy
“The demonstrated utility of MMP-7 and ALP as predictive biomarkers can inform clinical practice by aiding in the early identification of high-risk patients
thus facilitating timely interventions and potentially improving long-term outcomes,” the researchers wrote
The study, “Prognostic Value of Combined Detection of MMP-7 and ALP Levels in Children With Biliary Atresia Post-Kasai Surgery,” was published in Pediatric Transplantation
Biliary atresia is an infantile liver condition wherein the bile ducts, which carry the digestive fluid bile from the liver to the intestines, are blocked or absent. This results in bile accumulating in the liver and symptoms that include pale stools
and yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes
A mainstay treatment for biliary atresia is Kasai portoenterostomy
a surgical procedure that creates a new channel for bile to flow through to the intestines
some children with biliary atresia will have substantial liver damage that eventually necessitates a liver transplant
It’s difficult to predict which individuals undergoing Kasai surgery are more or less likely to later need a liver transplant
“Identifying reliable prognostic biomarkers to predict post-surgical outcomes of [biliary atresia] children is crucial for optimizing patient management and improving long-term survival rates,” the researchers wrote
Here, researchers in China evaluated blood levels of the enzymes MMP-7 and ALP as potential predictors for the risk of liver transplant after Kasai surgery. MMP-7 is a marker of liver scarring and has been frequently reported to have good predictive value for liver transplant among biliary atresia patients after a Kasai procedure
ALP is associated with problems with bile flow and liver scarring
“We speculated that the [blood] levels of MMP-7 and ALP might reflect the inflammatory state of the liver and the degree of bile duct obstruction
with their combined assessment providing valuable insights into the disease progression and postoperative prognosis of [biliary atresia] patients,” the researchers wrote
the researchers retrospectively looked at data from 85 children with biliary atresia who underwent Kasai surgery at a single Chinese hospital from April 2015 to May 2020
Blood levels of MMP-7 and ALP were measured at the time of the Kasai surgery
more than half the children (54.1%) had a liver transplant
Those who eventually needed a transplant had significantly higher blood levels of both MMP-7 and ALP than those who didn’t
Blood levels of MMP-7 and ALP were each significantly associated with levels of gamma-glutamyltransferase
a well-established biomarker of biliary atresia
Further statistical analyses adjusted for potential influencing factors showed that high MMP-7 and ALP levels were predictive biomarkers of needing a liver transplant within three years after the Kasai procedure
Mathematical models indicated that high levels of both markers could discriminate children needing a liver transplant from those who kept their liver with a 92.6% accuracy
combining these levels could correctly identify 91.3% of all the children who needed a liver transplant and 87.2% of all of those who didn’t
the predictive value of this combination was superior to that of either marker alone
“This study establishes MMP-7 and ALP as valuable prognostic biomarkers for BA patients undergoing Kasai surgery
with the combined measurement offering superior predictive accuracy,” wrote the researchers
larger studies should validate the results and test the utility of these markers as prognostic indicators in clinical practice
elucidating the molecular mechanisms by which these biomarkers influence [biliary atresia] outcomes can pave the way for targeted therapies.”

Japan's Yuna Kasai became the first Japanese woman to win an individual gold medal at the Nordic ski world championships on Thursday
triumphing in the Nordic combined mass start normal hill event as her younger twin sister Haruka secured bronze
The victory in Trondheim in Norway saw the 21-year-old become the first Japanese to top an individual podium at the worlds since men's ski jumper Kazuyoshi Funaki won on the normal hill in 1999 in Austria
Yuna Kasai sat third after the 5-kilometer cross-country as home favorite and two-time reigning champion Gyda Westvold Hansen finished 3.6 seconds ahead
Haruka Kasai recovered from her eighth-place finish in the tracks with a 96-meter jump to take a brief lead at 115.6 points before Yuna Kasai landed her 96.5-meter attempt in her favorite segment to move top on 121.0 points
Hansen's 94.5-meter jump on the 102-meter hill was only enough for a runner-up finish with 118.7 points
"My race was really good and allowed me to build on it in the second half (with the jumps)
I managed to produce my best performance," said Yuna Kasai
Her first World Cup win had only arrived on Feb
7 in Estonia where the twin also shared the podium finishing first and second
"Us two getting on the podium together isn't an easy thing
I'm doubly happy and it's been the best day possible," she said
Haruka Kasai still won bronze for the second straight worlds
"I'm really happy to continue winning a medal and getting on the podium together," she said
"We have a relationship that provides positive impetus for each other

Gyda Westvold Hansen (NOR) looked on course for a third successive individual World title when she earlier won a dramatic cross-country race at the Granåsen Ski Centre
took the lead with a superb 96.0-meter jump to reach 115.6 points before sister Yuna moved into gold-medal position with an even better 96.5m effort for 121.0 points
With favourite Ida Marie Hagen (NOR) falling well short on the hill after struggling to fifth in the tracks and Marte Leinan Lund (NOR) also slipping out of the medals to eighth after a strong second place in the cross-country
the hosts’ hopes rested with Westvold Hansen
Last to go and looking nervous at the top of the HS102 hill in front of an expectant crowd
the 22-year-old fell agonizingly short as her 94.5m jump was only good enough for silver and 118.7 points
It was the first time Norway had not won individual gold in a women’s individual event at the World Championships
leaving Yuna Kasai – who only won her maiden World Cup competition in Otepää (EST) earlier this month – in a state of disbelief
I am very happy but I don’t feel the reality of it
I can’t believe this is actually happening
The fact we are both on the podium makes me twice as happy.” – Yuna KasaiKasai
is only the second Japanese to win individual World gold after Kenji Ogiwara
who won the men’s 15km Gundersen in 1993 and 1997
having missed the last round of World Cup events in Otepää to focus on preparing for Trondheim
declared herself “very satisfied” with silver after a difficult season in which she has struggled on the hill
“I have not been jumping at this level before this season
“I think this is a better performance than the two golds I had before (in Oberstdorf (GER) in 2021 and Planica (SLO) in 2023
To do this here in Trondheim means a lot.”
it was a second individual World bronze after also finishing third in the Gundersen in Planica
“I'm relieved that we were able to reach the podium and also very happy that my sister and I were able to do well together,” she said
“We'll be aiming for the top tomorrow with the Mixed Team competition and Gundersen on Sunday.”
The competitors were earlier greeted by a wall of noise from the 22,000 spectators for the start of the cross-country as the first of six Nordic Combined events at the championships got under way
it was Hagen who took it out at the front from the start
but unlike for much of a season where she has dominated in the tracks
the 24-year-old was unable to shake off her rivals
Overall World Cup leader Nathalie Armbruster (GER)
buoyed by her recent victory over Hagen in Otepää
stuck doggedly to the Norwegian (below) on the first 2.5km loop
with Leinan Lund also in close proximity and Westvold Hansen biding her time just behind
Yuna Kasai moved up to make it a five-strong leading group at the halfway stage
But as Hagen’s energy levels seemed to dip
Westvold Hansen made her move at around 3km in and powered to the front on the steep uphill section
she took an unfortunate tumble forwards and dropped back to fifth
“Nathalie stepped on my skis and it was a bit annoying to lose those seconds
but I just had to get up as fast as possible,” a rueful Hagen said afterwards
Westvold Hansen continued to apply the pressure at the front and opened up enough of a gap to be able to raise her arms in celebration as she approached the finish line to take the acclaim of the crowd
Her winning time of 13:36.3 was two seconds clear of compatriot Leinan Lund – an advantage of just 0.5 points to take to the hill
4.2 seconds (-1.1 points) behind and Hagen trailing in fifth
seven seconds – a 1.8-point deficit – behind Westvold Hansen
The jumping section was no less dramatic as another Norwegian
17-year-old Ingrid Laate – the recently crowned junior world champion – dropped down three start gates to No.27 and soared out to 100.5 meters
the joint-longest distance of the day along with Annalena Slamik (AUT)
took the lead before a powerful 96.0m jump from Haruka Kasai saw the Japanese hit the front on 115.6
Alexa Brabec (USA)’s 93.0m effort ultimately left her in a superb fourth place on 111.4
only managing 83.0m for 93.8 points and 10th place
“We have so many strong girls in Nordic Combined now that you really have to be at your top to win competitions
Of course it was not what I was hoping for
I just have to go for it tomorrow and Sunday and hope for better.”– Ida Marie HagenIt was also a disappointing day for Armbruster
who has won three of the last five World Cup events but had to settle for sixth after an 89.0m jump
“I didn’t show my best ability,” the 19-year-old lamented
but I am not happy about my jump – I know I can do better on the hill.”
Both Hagen and Armbruster will have strong medal chances on Friday as part of the Norwegian and German teams which took gold and silver in the Mixed competition in Planica

Elevated bile acids after surgery associated with higher risk of complications
Measuring the blood levels of bile acids, the main component of the digestive fluid bile, can help predict key clinical outcomes for babies with biliary atresia after they undergo standard Kasai surgery to restore bile flow
High bile acid levels were significantly associated with a fourfold higher risk of portal hypertension
which is a liver complication marked by high blood pressure in a major liver vein
and a 12 times higher risk of needing a liver transplant or dying
Blood “bile acids offer a simple and useful additional tool” to predict Kasai surgery outcomes in biliary atresia
The study, “Serum bile acids early after portoenterostomy are predictive for native liver survival and portal hypertension in biliary atresia,” was published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition
or the tubes that transport bile from the liver to the intestines
This prevents bile from draining from the liver to the small intestine
resulting in toxic bile buildup in the liver
causing damage and bile leakage into the bloodstream
Biliary atresia symptoms include dark urine
or yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes
The first-line treatment is the Kasai procedure
a surgery that aims to restore bile flow by creating an alternate route into the small intestine that bypasses the blocked ducts
More than half of patients no longer have jaundice after the surgery
indicated by normalization of blood bilirubin levels within six months
Bilirubin is an orange-yellow pigment of bile that accumulates in the blood in biliary atresia and is thought to underlie jaundice
the Kasai procedure doesn’t always result in a successful outcome in restoring bile flow
and some children will continue to experience liver damage
which can eventually progress to liver failure
where a liver transplant is the only therapeutic option
About one in five biliary atresia patients will need a liver transplant before they turn 2
more than two-thirds develop serious liver complications like portal hypertension before school age
early markers of liver disease progression in biliary atresia,” the researchers wrote
To evaluate the predictive value of blood bile acid levels on post-Kasai clinical outcomes
a team of researchers in Finland reviewed bile acids
and clinical data from 56 babies with biliary atresia who underwent the surgery
babies were 58 days old at the time of surgery
Three-quarters no longer had jaundice after six months
36 children (64%) were diagnosed with portal hypertension at the median age of 2.1 years
52% of the children were still living with their native liver
while were 41% had undergone liver transplant; no child was listed for liver transplant
Median transplant-free survival was 6.3 years among all the children and 7.5 years among those who no longer had jaundice
measured in the blood at three and six months after surgery
accurately predicted survival without the need for a liver transplant in all children
bile acids at one month were the strongest predictor of transplant-free survival
Blood bile acid levels greater than 150 micromoles per liter at three months after surgery significantly increased by eight times the risk of needing a liver transplant or dying
High levels of bilirubin (greater than 18.5 micromoles per liter) significantly increased this risk by seven times
only elevated bile acids (higher than 119 micromoles per liter) at three months after surgery were a significant predictor of liver transplant or death
Elevated levels of bile acids and bilirubin in the blood at three and six months also increased the risk of developing portal hypertension by four and 13 times
predicting the complication with “moderate accuracy” in babies who had become free of jaundice
The researchers noted that larger studies in biliary atresia are needed to validate the cutoffs and to investigate the role of bile acids in various liver disease complications
Combined therapy results in better liver function
Children with biliary atresia who received infusions of bone-marrow stem cells during a Kasai operation
a liver surgery that’s the main strategy for treating the condition
had reduced disease severity and greater improvements in liver function than patients who received only the surgery
The combined intervention was also found to be safe, according to results of a Phase 1 trial (NCT05517317)
The results were published in the study, “Modified Kasai operation combined with autologous bone marrow mononuclear cell infusion for biliary atresia,” which appeared in BMC Surgery
“[Bone marrow stem cell] administration combined with Kasai operation for [biliary atresia] is safe and may maintain or improve liver function in the studied patients,” the researchers wrote
Biliary atresia is a rare liver disease affecting infants in which the ducts that carry digestive fluid bile from the liver to the small intestine are blocked or absent
infants develop symptoms of jaundice (yellow discoloration of the skin and whites of the eyes) and pale stools
Long-term complications include liver scarring known as cirrhosis and organ failure
surgeons create a new pathway that carries bile out of the liver and into the intestines
effectively replacing the blocked or absent bile ducts
many children with biliary atresia experience progressive cirrhosis and liver disease that ultimately leads to liver failure
Bone marrow stem cells can develop into any type of blood cell
Infused stem cells are expected to move through the blood to damaged tissue and help with tissue repair and regeneration
researchers compared the efficacy and safety of combined cell infusions and Kasai surgery with Kasai surgery alone in two groups of children with biliary atresia
composed of 10 children with a mean age of 2.6 months
received stem cells through the umbilical vein during the surgery
80% of the stem cell-treated group had enlarged livers
while 50% of the control group had the same condition
Each patient underwent a modified Kasai operation
with surgeons adapting the procedure to make it easier to remove scar-like tissue in the area where the bile ducts leave the liver
bone marrow cells were harvested from each patient
These patients subsequently received a 10-minute infusion of their own bone marrow stem cells via the umbilical vein
Patients in both groups were followed for more than four years
There were no major complications during or after surgery in the stem cell-treated group
leading researchers to conclude the combined surgery and stem cell infusion was safe
Liver function in that group was maintained or improved
as measured by multiple biochemical markers
the stem cell-treated group had more significant decreases in bilirubin and liver enzymes
Low levels of albumin indicate liver problems
The two stem cell-treated patients who had second liver biopsies one year after surgery had less cholestasis (slowing or stalling of bile flow from the liver) and mild inflammation without worsening of cirrhosis.
Combined Kasai surgery and stem cell infusions led to greater reductions in disease severity, as demonstrated by a 3.1-point reduction in Pediatric End-Stage Liver Disease (PELD) scores during each six-month visit for patients in the stem cell-treated group.
While all patients in the stem cell-treated group survived more than four years after their combined surgery and stem cell treatment, three patients in the control group did not,
“Our results revealed that the modified Kasai operation combined with [bone marrow stem cell] infusion was more effective for [biliary atresia] than the Kasai operation alone,” the researchers wrote.
The researchers cautioned that their results were based on a small number of patients and called for further research.
“Larger randomized clinical trials with an expanded control group are necessary to better assess the efficacy of combining the Kasai operation with cell therapy for [biliary atresia],” they wrote.

In 2017, around 35,000 Congolese refugees fled conflict and violence from Kasai region in DRC to Lunda Norte Province in Angola, leading UNHCR and the Government of Angola to declare an emergency situation. Lovua settlement was then established on Sep 2017.Since then, the 2017 Kasai refugees, as they are referred to, have been granted asylum and provided with assistance and protection mainly in Lovua Refugee Settlement and other neighbouring areas.
This report comprises active refugee population originating from DRC Kasai region as registered by UNHCR until 31st January 2025.
during the latest stage of the men’s tour in Sapporo
The 1972 Winter Olympic Games host venue was also the scene of Kasai’s World Cup debut
when he recorded 31st and 26th place-finishes in his homeland
In the years since he has become a three-time Olympic medallist and attained eight World Championship medals
including gold in the Ski Flying discipline in 1992
competed in the last of his 578 World Cup contests 11 months ago in Planica (SLO) and has to date spent the 2024/25 season competing in the second-tier FIS Continental Cup circuit
"This is just another step for me; I aim to reach 600 competitions," Kasai stated to local media ahead of his latest international outing for Japan
who has appeared at a record eight Olympic Games
so my intension is to keep on with it until 60.”
He is far from the only Japanese star who will be on show in Sapporo with reigning Olympic Normal Hill champion Ryoyu Kobayashi among the headline names
“I am delighted to be part of such a competitive team,” stated Kobayashi who finished second twice on the Okurayama HS137 Hill last season and won two of three events in Sapporo back in 2023
The three-time Four Hills Tournament winner has endured a difficult season though and is still seeking a first World Cup podium
He and team-mate Ren Nikaido showed improved form at stages during last week’s World Cup double header in Lake Placid (USA) and will aim to build on that on their home hill
The man to beat though is, still, Daniel Tschofenig (AUT) with the 2024/25 Four Hills Tournament winner continuing to astound during his breakthrough season
The 22-year-old entered this year’s campaign with five World Cup podium finishes to his name
To date, he has secured eight wins, together with two second and five third-place finishes, giving him a commanding 203-point lead at the top of the overall standings
Johann Andre Forfang (NOR) is up to fourth after victory in Lake Placid topped off an impressive run of form since the turn of the year
Early season leader Pius Paschke (GER) is down to fifth after skipping the last leg in Lake Placid (USA) to focus on preparations for the rest of the season
in a bid to halt his alarming drop in form
The veteran raced into a strong World Cup lead with five wins from the opening seven events
but he is without a podium finish in his last eleven individual races
placing 27th and 31st in Willingen (GER) during his last outing at the beginning of the month
“I trained at home for a week and I had a lot of fun with some very good sessions,” Paschke told FIS ahead of his return
“I like that I’m now back at the World Cup
I hope that we have good weather and that the trip is worth it.”
The venue was opened in 1931 and has undergone renovations in 1953
Sapporo appeared as an FIS Ski Jumping World Cup host for the first time in 1980 and has been a regular feature ever since
In addition to hosting the ski jumping contests at the 1972 Olympic Winter Games
the venue also held the 2007 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships
In 2023/24 the men’s FIS Ski Jumping World Cup events were won by Stefan Kraft (AUT) and Domen Prevc (SLO) respectively
with home favourite Ryoyu Kobayashi second in each

The 21-year-old actress shared the exciting news on Sunday, revealing that she has welcomed her baby named Kasai. In a heartfelt post, Jackson gave fans a glimpse of her newborn’s tiny hands, matching perfectly with hers in a sweet set of onesies.
A post shared by S K A I (@skaijackson)
It seems the actress gave birth fairly recently, as just before sharing the touching images, she posted a GRWM video, showing what she was packing for her hospital trip.
Jackson first announced her pregnancy in November. Unfortunately, things with her boyfriend, Deondre Burgin, an aspiring rapper, seemed rocky at that time. Since then, the couple has remained a fixture in the media, mostly due to controversy surrounding Burgin’s personal life. He has been seen on video being arrested and has faced accusations of having multiple children. Additionally, he was criticized by Jackson’s fans for making negative remarks about her on social media.
Despite the drama, the couple has managed to maintain a relatively low profile in recent weeks leading up to Jackson’s labor. Thankfully, it appears that the performer had a healthy pregnancy and a safe birth.

genitals and arms) were collected by Marcel Tshilumba for an unknown destination,” Mukini
Mukini is accused of having beheaded the victim and mutilated his body after Tshilumba had shot Chief Mbangu
our client has cooperated with the court by telling the truth about what actually happened on Wednesday
it is not an offense if the court pardons our client,” says his second lawyer
Tshilumba's lawyers accept that it was their client who brought Chief Mbangu to the podium
but they say that someone else pulled the trigger
“There is no evidence to show our client shooting Chief Mbangu,” argues one of his lawyers
in which Mukini is seen desecrating the body of Chief Mbangu
Tshilumba is not directly seen firing the shot that killed Mbangu just beforehand
This is despite the fact that many witnesses and Mukini himself claim that he was the one who did it
certain traditional chiefs were responsible for the insurrectionary movement in that area
why don't they answer?” wonders Tshilumba
Regarding other alleged crimes – including arson
looting and criminal conspiracy – Tshilumba's defense also points to the lack of evidence
“Our client had come to this village on business
Some witnesses became jealous of him even though he had nothing to do with it,” they conclude
Among the many people in the public audience
“Nobody joined this movement of their own free will
I ask the court to take note of this reality,” explains a woman in the audience
“This boy made us suffer in this town
He must suffer the full force of the law,” explains one of the local dignitaries
victims' lawyer Cédric Nsenda presents himself as the instigator of the trial
when the victims did not know where to start
He is praising himself for what he calls a “happy outcome”
“I was the first lawyer to put together the case
I paid the legal fees so that the case could be brought to trial even though I didn't know anyone in the area
It was only afterwards that I met the 283 victims and Chief Mbangu Stanis [son of the murdered chief and witness at the trial] to organize as civil parties
and I hope we will win again here at second instance
because all the evidence presented is in favor of the victims,” explains the lawyer from the Kasaï Central bar to Justice Info
“Our first meeting with the victims was historic
This movement [Kuamina Nsapu] had destroyed everything
The victims recognized the perpetrators and today they are standing trial,” he says proudly
“I got the video in Lualaba [the province neighboring Kasaï Central] from a man after several days of investigation
but was willing to cooperate if he was drunk
We kept him drinking until we got the video
The two defendants couldn't have known about this ammunition
I'm now awaiting the sentences for Tshilumba and Mukini.”
Jean Jacques Sanzandji is another lawyer for the civil parties
He went through everything during the insurrection of the Kamuina Nsapu militia in Masuika
He is a native of the area and acknowledges that his life was saved thanks to the intervention of the armed forces
I was intercepted by the militiamen who wanted me dead because they killed without distinction
But one of them said that I was the only lawyer we had in the city and that I had to be protected
“I experienced the events and I am a lawyer but the people of Masuika know who killed Chief Mbangu
We gave a warm welcome to a young clothing salesman who turned into a killer and then a looter
We believe that the guilty parties will be punished in accordance with the law,” he insists

capital of Kasaï-Central in central Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
it recommended that the truth commission should “rapidly” complete its preparatory phase and move into action
After its three-year mandate expired on July 15
the commission was extended by the Kasai-Central provincial assembly on July 18
The provincial edict that created the CPVJR on July 15
2021 gave it the task of “establishing the truth about the violence perpetrated during the Kamwina Nsapu conflict”
these clashes between militia loyal to traditional chief Kamwina Nsapu and security forces in the Kasai region left more than 3,000 people dead and nearly 2 million displaced
the CPVJR commissioners were not invested until August 16

coordinator of the Regional Council of Development NGOs (CRONGD)
is equally quick to point out the commission’s meagre achievements
responsibility is shared between the provincial government
“The executive has not made the resources available,” he says
But he also blames the commissioners: “There is a management problem
They have a share of the responsibility.”
The commission was set up following national consultations on transitional justice held in 14 of the country’s provinces
in partnership with the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office
But its work is being questioned in Kananga and throughout the province
The 12 commissioners - or “12 apostles” as they have been dubbed - are not exempt from criticism
“I don't see what this commission is for,” says a Kananga-based lawyer who requested anonymity
In its first and only report covering 2022 and 2023
the commission looked only at issues concerning its own administration
As for the activities for which it was created
the report states that there is “nothing to report at this stage”
The same applies to the activities of the listening centres that are supposed to be set up in the province’s five territories (Demba
“The edict was promulgated on July 15 [2021]
We had to wait a whole year to invest the commissioners
because there was no governor,” the CVPJR's rapporteur
Added to this is the fact that the commission had no infrastructure when they were appointed
let alone “strategic tools for its operation” such as internal regulations
The provincial government has reportedly not disbursed the planned funds
Of the announced three-year budget of 216 million Congolese francs ($77,000)
the commission has only received 20 million francs ($7,000)
“the provincial executive has failed to honour its commitments”
“For what work should the commissioners be paid
Should the commission be paid to develop its own tools?” asks the lawyer from Kananga who asked not to be named
before adding: “Taking more than a year just to develop its tools means that the work was poorly planned.”
the commission says it is counting on the support of external technical and financial partners
in particular the Swiss NGO Trial International and the UN office
They also share their expertise in transitional justice
But the committee’s rapporteur says the State should stop depending on these partners and take responsibility itself
“We cannot leave a sector as important as justice
in the hands of technical and financial partners
The state is abandoning its responsibilities,” he says
Justice Info tried in vain to get the opinion of the parliamentary president of Kasaï-Central
The commission is normally funded from the provincial budget, but it is also hoping for funds from central government. Kambala believes that Kinshasa should “increase the budget line allocated to justice”. A statement by the UN Human Rights Council on October 9
2023 also calls on the Congolese government to support the CPVJR
financial and material resources made available to the CPVJR so that it can carry out its mandate effectively,” said the DRC experts in their statement
we remain convinced that the success of the CPVJR will give more credibility to the process of implementing transitional justice mechanisms in other provinces
the progress made in the province of Kasai-Central and at national level supports the idea that the complementary approach is the right one.”
Now that the CPVJR’s mandate has been extended
the commission says it wants to move forward
“We hope we are now at the crossroads between the preparatory phase
and the real start of the operational phase,” says Kambala

were among the eleven defendants in this long-awaited trial in Kasai province
which opened on May 20 before the military court of former Kasai-Occidental (now Kasai and Kasai-Central provinces) in central Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
They were charged with participation in an insurrectional movement

Only four of them were present before the military court: Tshitsho Lopupu
None of the other seven defendants turned up at the court
The Kamwina Nsapu insurrection pitted militiamen loyal to Jean-Pierre Mpandi (Kamwina Nsapu)
against the national security forces for three years
The rebellion began in the territory of Dibaya in Kasai-Central and then spread throughout the Kasai region
In response to this insurrection by the Kamwina Nsapu militia
the authorities in power at the time allegedly created a militia
The Bana Mura came from non-Tshiluba speaking Bantu populations (Pende

travelled more than 300 kilometres to hold mobile court hearings in Kamonia and Tshikapa
The defendants were expected to face 119 victims recognized as civil parties
the military court declared itself incompetent to try the case
“No judge can change individual jurisdiction,” ruled first president of former Kasai Occidental military court Innocent Mayembe
“When your court is not empowered to judge a case that is beyond your jurisdiction
This military court does not try generals.”
Because of their rank and high level of responsibility
the competent jurisdiction in the case of these personalities is the Military High Court
all the other defendants in the case must also answer to the court that has jurisdiction over the highest-ranking defendant
a law professor at the University of Kinshasa
The trial is therefore cancelled for all the defendants
the general and the executive secretary of the provincial government who has ministerial rank should not have appeared before this military court,” says Godet Kulenfuka
president of the defence lawyers’ collective
He adds that they are prepared to defend their clients if brought before the right judges
“We’re disappointed because we think the law has been torpedoed,” laments Michelin Pungi
He rejects the argument of the defendants’ status
arguing that the judge should have respected the “intangibility of the facts” principle by judging the defendants according to their status at the time of the alleged acts
The question of the judicial courts’ jurisdiction related to status of the accused often arises in trials in the DRC
Some courts give priority to the status of defendants at the time of the events
while others argue that their status at the time of the trial should be taken into account
This problem arose during the trial of former prime minister Matata Ponyo (2012-2016) in a case of embezzlement of more than 200 million dollars for the Bukanga Lonzo agro-industrial park
“the Constitutional Court is the criminal jurisdiction for the Head of State and Prime Minister”
the defence argued that the Constitutional Court had no jurisdiction to try a former Prime Minister
That high court declared itself incompetent in 2021
before backtracking after a Court of Cassation decision in 2022
Initially scheduled to begin in July this year
investigations of this case are due to start on July 22
This new procedure is still only in its infancy
the jurisdiction privilege does not mean impunity
but is intended to prevent the defendant getting the better of the judge
As soon as a court declares itself incompetent
it is up to the civil parties to go to the competent one
the victims’ lawyers will be taking their case to the Military High Court
in Kongolo Moshi (Kazumba territory) and in Bana Ba Ntumba (Dimbelenge territory) and Kananga
in a case on the murder of two UN experts in Kasai Central
At the end of 2021
the Société congolaise pour l'État de droit (Congolese Society for the Rule of Law)
expressed in a press release “serious doubts about the government’s determination to combat impunity” in the province

Ski jumper Noriaki Kasai continued rewriting the records books at the age of 52
extending his own Guinness World Record for the most individual World Cup appearances to 579 on Feb
But his result in the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup’s men’s individual competition held at the Sapporo Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium in Sapporo put a damper on his achievement
“It was no good because I didn’t make the distance,” Kasai said
“I am happy because I had a desire to break the Guinness record.”
Kasai placed 47th with a jump of 108 meters in a field of 56 competitors
He advanced to the first round with the top 50 finishers
Kasai added to his own remarkable Guinness World Record
Kasai was born in Shimokawa town in Hokkaido
He made his first appearance at the World Cup in Sapporo in 1988 at the age of 16
He is second in Japan in the number of World Cup victories
He has competed in the Winter Olympics a record eight times and is a three-time medalist
He won silver in the team event in Lillehammer in 1994
silver in the individual large hill event and bronze in the team event in Sochi in 2014
his 105-meter jump was three meters shorter than the one he made in the qualifying round
“I was not sure how I was going to jump so it was a passive jump,” he recalled
Kasai was not on the World Cup team and competed in lower-level tournaments
running more than 100 kilometers in a month
He continued to post good results and made the team for the Sapporo World Cup
in the individual competition qualifier on Feb
“I was so disappointed that I couldn't think about jumping,” he said
he ran a total of 10 km in preparation for qualifying
he was not satisfied with the overall results
“I think I will be left off the World Cup team (in the future),” Kasai said
the veteran ski jumper remains positive and is already trying to establish a positive mindset for turning things around
“I want to make jumps that will lead to positive results next season (at other competitions),” he said

2025·Nordic CombinedYuna Kasai's previous best finish this season was fourth place before her 93.5m jump © Barbieri/NordicFocusYuna Kasai (JPN) claimed a sensational first Viessmann FIS Nordic Combined World Cup victory after Ida Marie Hagen (NOR) crash-landed on the final jump of a dramatic Mass Start competition in Otepää (EST)
whose previous best World Cup finishes were three third places and who had yet to finish on the podium this season
started the jumping section with a five-point deficit after placing fifth during the cross-country
who along with twin sister Haruka turned 21 this week
the longest jump under the lights on the Tehvandi hill
to post a tally of 99.9 points that proved insurmountable
Haruka Kasai got closest to her sister with a 91.0m effort to reach 97.8 points
which proved good enough for her fifth podium of the season
As well as equalling her World Cup best finish of second
which she had previously achieved four times
it also meant the Kasais both finished on a World Cup podium together for the first time
I am very happy to stand on the podium with my sister Haruka for my first win
Today's victory was not achieved by me alone
Thank you so much to them.”– Yuna KasaiNathalie Armbruster’s 89.0m jump was only good enough for 97 points and fourth
presenting Hagen with an opportunity to cut into her advantage in the standings
a rollercoaster week for Hagen took another dramatic twist as she lost her balance after jumping 89.0m and fell forwards before shuddering to a halt (below)
Mercifully the 24-year-old was able to get up and walk out of the arena but the frustration on her face was clear at a missed opportunity to reassert her title credentials
having finished 15th of the 23 competitors as a result of her landing
Instead Jenny Nowak (GER) earned her first podium finish of the season in third
just ahead of overall leader Nathalie Armbruster in fourth
“I knew I could jump well and my jump was really good
It was bad for Ida that she fell – I hope she is OK – but I am so happy.”
whose disqualification in the Compact in Seefeld (AUT) cost her points in two events
had earlier enjoyed a crushing victory by 16.8 seconds in the cross-country over Armbruster
giving her a 4.2-point advantage heading to the HS97 hill
But her fall meant the Norwegian slipped to third in the overall standings, 143 points behind Armbruster with Haruka Kasai moving up to second
Having seen her run of 11 straight wins ended because of a suit infringement in Seefeld
Hagen had looked doubly determined to recover lost ground in the cross-country
She hit the front inside the first 30 seconds
powering up the first hill and led Armbruster – wearing the overall leader’s yellow jersey for the first time – by 9.5 seconds after the first 1.2km
With Gyda Westvold Hansen opting to miss this weekend to focus on preparing for the World Championships in Trondheim starting later this month
it was Hagen’s team-mate Marte Leinan Lund and Armbruster who led a chasing bunch also including Haruka and Yuna Kasai
But Hagen extended her lead to 14.5 seconds by the halfway mark and continued to put the hammer down in the second half of the 5km race
with Armbruster pipping Haruka Kasai for second in a sprint finish
Leinan Lund and Ema Volavsek (SLO) both fell in the finishing straight
allowing Minja Korhonen (FIN) and Yuna Kasai to edge ahead as they picked themselves up to come in sixth and seventh
set the early standard on the hill with a jump of 91.0 meters before Japanese 17-year-old Yuzuki Kainuma underlined her emergence as a promising talent with an 88.0m effort to take the lead
with an 87.5m jump taking her to 89.6 points
who matched Slamik’s 91.0m to lift her to 97.6 points
set down challenging targets which remained until the top five came to jump
Yuna Kasai (JPN) seized the moment with her 93.5m effort
with twin sister Haruka helping make it a memorable day for Japan
pipping Hagen to the Mass Start Trophy in the process after the final competition in the format this season
"We sisters are very happy because our goal was to be on the podium together," said Haruka Kasai (above
"I will continue to challenge myself to be as good as my sister Yuna."
The women will return on Saturday for a Gundersen starting at 09:15 CET (10:15 local) with a Compact to follow on Sunday
the final competitions before the World Championships in Trondheim

where residences such as Dubai Gate 2 are located
The family of Hennadiy Kasai, a Ukrainian parliament member from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Servant of the People party, secretly acquired over $1 million in Dubai real estate during Russia’s full-scale invasion, the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s (RFE/RL) Ukrainian service revealed Tuesday in its investigation
Documents from United Arab Emirates public registers, obtained by Schemes, an investigative project from RFE/RL Ukrainian service, and verified with OCCRP, show that Kasai’s daughter and nephew purchased four apartments in Dubai between 2022 and 2023. This period coincided with a procurement scandal involving the Kasai family’s role in supplying military clothing at allegedly inflated prices.
The real estate, spanning premium residential complexes, was acquired during a time of heightened scrutiny over Ukraine’s defense spending. In April 2022, Kasai’s daughter, Polina, 22 at the time, purchased a two-bedroom apartment in the Dubai Gate 2 complex for $310,000.
That same month, Kasai’s nephew, Oleksandr, then 25, bought an apartment in the Studio One complex for $202,500. Oleksandr later acquired two additional properties – a $330,000 apartment in the elite Palm Views West complex on Palm Jumeirah in August 2022, and another unit in Studio One for $240,000 in February 2023.
The source of funding for these purchases remains unclear. Ukrainian Parliament member’s asset declaration and his family’s income records show no apparent legitimate means that would explain the family's real estate holdings in Dubai, aside from business earnings tied to a contract with Ukraine’s Defense Ministry, which has spurred a criminal investigation.
In 2022, Oleksandr Kasai co-owned a Turkish company, Vector Avia, that secured a $27 million contract to supply military clothing to Ukraine’s armed forces. According to Ukraine’s State Security Service (SBU), the clothing was of inadequate quality and priced three times higher than Turkish customs valuations, prompting allegations of corruption and misappropriation of public funds.
Two Defense Ministry’s officials were charged for their involvement in the deal, although only one of Vector Avia's co-owners was indicted. Oleksandr Kasai exited the company before authorities issued charges.
The law enforcement confirmed that Vector Avia co-owner, Roman Pletnev, fled to Turkey in 2022. According to border crossing data “Schemes” obtained through various sources, Oleksandr Kasai left Ukraine in May 2023, and has not returned. It remains unclear how he left Ukraine, due to martial law, according to which Ukrainian men aged 18 to 60 are restricted from leaving the country. He did not respond to the Scheme’s calls or written inquiries by publication time.
Beyond Vector Avia, financial disclosures reveal limited income sources for the Kasai family.
Oleksandr Kasai previously played handball for Motor Zaporizhzhia, a club affiliated with a nationalized aircraft engine manufacturer. He currently holds stakes in a modest Ukrainian business.
Polina Kasai works as a freelance copywriter, with income far below the Dubai property costs. When approached for comment, she hung up after being asked about her Dubai real estate.
Over the last four years, the income of Hennadiy Kasai’s family appears insufficient to cover the value of their new real estate assets, intensifying scrutiny over potential corruption.
In a written response to journalists’ questions, Hennadiy Kasai said his daughter and nephew are grown-ups, who are financially independent and live separately. He, however, couldn’t explain the origin of $1 million spent on Dubai real estate.
Kasai denied involvement in his nephew's company's inflated military procurement contract.

However, in some recent pieces of literature, there are discrepancies in the influence of age in Kasai procedure on postoperative short-term prognosis. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effects of earlier KP on short-term surgical prognosis of BA and clarify these discrepancies in recent studies.
To identify related studies, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, and the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure database were searched up to March 2022. Data for the impact of age at KP on clinical prognosis were extracted, including jaundice clearance rate (JCR) and native liver survival rate (NLSR).

Background: Good outcomes of biliary atresia (BA) are conventionally achieved after early Kasai portoenterostomy (KP)
there are discrepancies in the influence of age in Kasai procedure on postoperative short-term prognosis
This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effects of earlier KP on short-term surgical prognosis of BA and clarify these discrepancies in recent studies
and the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure database were searched up to March 2022
Data for the impact of age at KP on clinical prognosis were extracted
including jaundice clearance rate (JCR) and native liver survival rate (NLSR)
Results: A total of 14 articles were included in the present study
which involve a total of 3,276 patients with BA who underwent Kasai procedure
Compared with patients older than 91 days of age
patients 90 days of age or younger exhibited significantly better JCR [odds ratio (OR)
2.23–4.17; P < .001] and a more favorable NLSR (OR
1.37–2.15; P < .001)
The NLSR of patients younger than 60 days of age was significantly higher than those of patients from 61 to 90 days of age (OR
1.18–1.68; P < .001)
There was no significant difference in JCRs between patients aged 60 days of age or younger and those aged 61–90 days of age (OR
0.95–1.81; P = 0.10)
there were also no significant differences in JCR
Conclusion: A significantly better short-term JCR and NLSRs were achieved among patients with BA treated using a KP procedure at ≤90 days of age compared with those treated at >90 days of age
There was no further improvement in the short-term JCR when the procedure was performed at ≤60 days compared with those treated at 61–90 days of age
treatment at ≤60 days of age was associated with a significant improvement in NLSR
the timing of KP does exert an important effect on short-term clinical outcomes of patients with BA
these discrepancies might attribute to the small sample sizes involved in those studies
it is necessary to perform meta-analyses to reassess the effect of early KP on jaundice clearance rate (JCR) and native liver survival rate (NLSR)
It is also necessary to perform subgroup analyses based on the BA type and indicators of the final diagnosis
The present meta-analysis extracted data from published studies to evaluate the impact of age at the time of KP on the outcomes and to clarify the existing discrepancies reported by recent studies
Our systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted according to the Preferred Instrument for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines (16)
but without a similar registered protocol on online registry sites
and Outcome) framework was used as follows: participants
patients with BA treated with KP; intervention
younger age at the time of KP compared to older age; and outcomes
and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases was performed up to March 2022
The medical subject terms and keywords were as follows: “Portoenterostomy
The detailed search strategy can be found in Supplementary Material 1
The inclusion criteria were as follows: population comprising patients younger than 18 years with BA; intervention for and comparison of patients who underwent KP at different ages; the study reported the NLSR at 2 years and/or the JCR at 3 or 6 months; and Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS) score ≥6
The following information was independently extracted by two researchers: first author; publication year; study design type; sample size; age at surgery; NLSR; JCR; BA type; and steroid regimen
Any disagreements regarding the qualifications and data collection were resolved through discussions with the corresponding authors and other authors
Subgroup analyses were conducted based on BA type (multiple types vs
Subgroup analyses were used to identify potential sources of heterogeneity and to explore the potential influence of known factors on outcomes
a sensitivity analysis was conducted to identify the reliability and validity of this study
Two independent reviewers rated the quality of the included studies using the NOS for cohort studies
Studies with NOS scores ≥6 could be included in the meta-analysis
The NOS checklist is listed in Supplementary Material 6
Because of the number of articles included in this study
a publication bias analysis was not necessary
Flowchart of literature search and study selection
Characteristics of the reports included in the meta-analysis
In the subgroup analysis stratified by BA type
the pooled OR of Multiple types was 2.41 (95% CI
1.59–3.66; P < .001)
and the pooled OR of single-type (type III) was 4.07 (95% CI
2.52–6.59; P < .001)
In the subgroup analysis based on final diagnosis indicators
the pooled OR of JCRs in 6 months group was 2.41 (95% CI
and the pooled OR of JCRs in 6 months group was 4.07 (95% CI
the pooled OR of the China group was 2.84 (95% CI
1.90–4.24; P < .001)
and the pooled OR of the Non-China group was 3.40 (95% CI
2.06–5.63; P < .001)
The results of the subgroup analyses indicated that the three variables did not significantly influence the overall results of the studies
>90 days group and results of subgroup analyses
(B) Subgroup analysis based on biliary atresia type
(C) Subgroup analysis based on JCR at 3 vs
A total of six studies (678 patients) (13, 19–23) were included (Figure 3). The BA type and JCRs at 3 or 6 months were also considered covariates of the subgroup. Among the six studies, heterogeneity was not significant (I2 = 8.0%; P = 0.365), and significant heterogeneity was not found in the subgroup analysis (Figure 3A)
The pooled OR of the six articles was 1.31 (95% CI
0.95–1.81; P = 0.10) using a fixed effects model analysis
indicating that there was no significant difference in JCRs between groups
the pooled OR of the multiple types group was 1.37 (95% CI
0.83–2.27; P = 0.223)
and the pooled OR of the single-type (type III) group was 1.27 (95% CI
0.83–1.94; P = 0.266)
And the pooled OR of the JCR in 6 months group was 1.37 (95% CI
and the pooled OR of the JCR in 3 months group was 1.27 (95% CI
the pooled OR of the China group was 1.10 (95% CI
0.74–1.65; P = 0.635)
and the pooled OR of the Non-China group was 1.80 (95% CI
1.04–3.12; P = .037)
indicating that the statistically significant associations were found in only the non-China group
61–90 days group and results of subgroup analyses
Two studies (210 patients) (13, 27) involved patients 30 days of age or younger compared with patients 31–45 days of age, patients 31–45 days of age compared with patients 46–60 days of age, and patients 30 days of age or younger compared with patients 46–60 days of age were included. There was no significant heterogeneity (Figure 4)
A fixed effects model analysis yielded pooled ORs of 2.68 (95% CI
0.83–1.90; P = 0.10)
0.43–1.50; P = 0.505)
0.64–7.09; P = 0.216)
suggesting that younger age at the time of KP did not improve the JCRs of patients 60 days of age or younger
Forest plots for JCR of ≤30 days vs
Forest plot for NLSR of ≤90 days vs
Forest plot for NLSR of ≤60 days vs
The sensitivity analysis of NLSR and JCR was performed using Stata/SE 12.0, and the results indicated that our results were credible and stable. As shown in Figure 7
the sensitivity analysis for the NLSR of patients younger than 90 days and patients older than 91 days indicated that the result cannot be substantially changed by any one study
consistent with other groups (Supplementary Material 5)
The result of sensitivity analysis regarding the assessment of NLSR of ≤90 days vs
and improved care for chronic liver disease
with a better NLSR reported for patients of Māori than European ethnicity
we conjecture that our finding of a benefit of non-China studies might reflect a prevalence of ductal plate malformation and other associated anomalies in the non-Chinese ethnicity
BA among patients of China was more likely to be caused by perinatal infections
for whom JCR can be improved with later KP
the results also could be due to the fact that postoperative adjuvant treatment protocols and economic circumstances varied greatly by country
the majority (79%) of the included studies reported populations of Asian countries
and there was no statistical heterogeneity among the included studies
a sensitivity analysis also showed the stability and reliability of the results of the meta-analysis
but further studies regarding the impact of various etiologies and association anomalies on the disease process and outcomes of BA are warranted
Data from the studies included were insufficient to conduct subgroup analyses in our meta-analysis
Our results indicate that KP performed earlier
can achieve more favorable short-term outcomes in terms of NLSR and JCR
while KP performed at ≤60 days of age does not significantly improve JCR
there was a significant improvement in short-term NLSR
We note that although age at the time of KP is a significant prognostic factor
other factors can influence the outcomes of BA surgery
Further and long-term follow-up studies for outcomes of BA patients who underwent KP at 60 days of age or younger are warranted

2025·Nordic CombinedHagen claimed her eighth win of the season
a day after her fall on the jumping hill © Barbieri/NordicFocusIda Marie Hagen (NOR) recovered from a jumping fall on Friday to return to winning ways with victory in Saturday’s Gundersen in Otepää (EST) in the Viessmann FIS Nordic Combined World Cup
The defending champion showed courage and composure to nail a 92.0m jump in testing conditions to finish fourth on the Tehvandi hill after an earlier fall by Cindy Haasch (GER) ended with the 20-year-old taken away on a stretcher
Starting the 5km cross-country 11 seconds behind Haruka Kasai (JPN)
who led after the jumping with a wonderful 96.0m effort
Hagen quickly overtook Austrian duo Annalena Slamik and Claudia Purker before catching the Japanese twin inside the first kilometer
Kasai remained in Hagen’s tracks until the halfway point before the 24-year-old made her move early on the second lap
Hagen stretched her advantage over the final kilometer and despite a small stumble 20m from the finish line
It was her eighth World Cup win of the season after a difficult week and her 17th overall
It was tough but also I am super lucky to be able to compete
when you look at Cindy (Haasch) falling today
I only got some bruises and a bit of a headache
so I’m lucky I didn’t injure myself more." – Ida Marie Hagen“I was sad about yesterday but I just hope Cindy is OK and I am just lucky to be skiing and able to compete," Hagen added
"It was fun to ski together with Haruka
we were both doing a good race and pushing each other.”
While Kasai is still awaiting her maiden World Cup victory
a sixth second place - and third this season - keeps her second in the overall standings
"I am happy to be on the podium again after yesterday," said the 21-year-old
"Today I raced with the goal of staying with Ida to my limit
She is a strong athlete and I can't match her yet
but I was able to race aggressively today and that gave me a lot of confidence."
With Hagen and Haruka Kasai way out ahead of the rest of the field
a three-way battle for the third podium spot was raging further back
Purker (AUT) eventually lost touch but still came home in a personal-best fifth place, but the fight between Yuna Kasai (JPN) – Friday’s surprise winner of the Mass Start – and Nathalie Armbruster (GER) went right to the wire
As they both skated frantically up the final straight in the Tehvandi Stadium
Armbruster eventually pipped Kasai on the line to claim her seventh podium of the season
“I felt pretty good during the race and it was a very exciting fight with Yuna right to the finish,” she said
“It is so cool to be on the podium again.”
Despite seeing her lead in the overall standings cut to 82 points over Haruka Kasai and 123 over Hagen
knowing if she continues to finish on the podium for the final four competitions
there was another eventful ski jumping round after the drama of Hagen’s fall on Friday
The early starters were regularly forced to pause on the starting bar with the wind swirling above the permitted level
while Sophia Maurus (GER) and Hanna Midtsundstad (NOR) were both disqualified for suit infringements
again set the target with a jump of 92.5 meters for 112.5 points
with team-mate Purker (AUT) close behind on 111.4 after a 93.0m effort
But the anxiety for the last seven jumpers ratcheted up a level when Haasch
with her left knee appearing to take the brunt of the impact
who only returned to the World Cup circuit in December after missing the whole of last season with a serious injury
Hagen – after her own fall on Friday – did brilliantly to land her own 92.0m jump and earn 108.9 points
But it was Haruka Kasai (above) who soared further than anyone else
her 96.0m effort earning her 114.0 points and a six-second lead over Slamik heading to the cross-country
Hagen fourth and Yuna Kasai fifth after a 90.0m jump
starting back in seventh 42 seconds behind
who came through to maintain her strong run of form

The AIGA promotion is slowly but surely gaining momentum in the jiu-jitsu & submission-grappling world
the Team vs Team show in an elimination tournament-based format
where squads compete directly against each other across 8 weight classes
Unlike the standard in jiu-jitsu tournaments
where academies define their squads with whichever athletes train in their premises daily
the AIGA format invites sponsors/brands to shape their teams with athletes who are – at most times – from various academies
a term often referred to as “super-teams” offering a more eclectic landscape
With the growth of AIGA and a demand for its unique 3-round hybrid ruleset of submission-only and standard BJJ points
the organization started developing qualifiers for the main event in Khazazshtan later this year
was one of the most anticipated of the trial events as the region is well known for being a breeding ground for talented grapplers
There were 8 squads involved in the AIGA Brazilian Qualifier
Many of the workgroups seen here belong to one single team
the Untouchable squad was built on Alliance HQ athletes
Melqui Galvao had his B-Squad representing his schools of Manaus & Sao Paulo
the Piramide competitors came from the Piramide Academy

and Demian Maia was also built on students of the legendary
Kasai (New York-based grappling promotion)
and Andinos were built on competitors from different teams
The Andinos were a team built by athletes from various countries of the Andes mountain range in South America and Luta Livre Brasil
was designed with some of the top-ranked competitors in Luta Livre Esportiva
which is often referred to as Brazil’s Catch Wrestling sport
The tournament had lots of big names and produced plenty of spectacular moments across the two days of the event
