Nara Prefecture — a shrine dedicated to the first emperor of Japan
Emperor Jimmu — will open some of its facilities for a limited time from October 23 to December 8 in celebration of the 130th year since its founding
Japanese history and legend puts Jimmu as the first emperor in the current unbroken line of imperial rule
Emperor Naruhito is believed to be his direct descendant
The plan calls for rare public access to an area called the Chokushi-kan
used by imperial envoys to purify themselves before ceremonial occasions or festivals
It was opened to the public only once before
The Chokushi-kan is located inside Kashihara Jingu
and the Chokushi-kan was built inside the shrine grounds in 1917
Japan will mark Emperor Naruhito’s enthronement with an official ceremony in Tokyo
Kashihara Jingu has close links with the imperial court due to its significance in the life of the first emperor
Many imperial family members have visited it to offer prayers
Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko
which was the purported anniversary of Emperor Jimmu’s death
When the Emperor Meiji was restored to power in 1868
the third year of the Keio segment of the Emperor Meiji’s rule
he was delighted to respond to citizens’ calls to establish a shrine at Kashihara
where the first emperor could be enshrined
The appeal of the location was its parallel connection as the site where the Emperor Jimmu founded the Chrysanthemum Throne
Located in Kashihara City in Nara Prefecture
the grounds on which the shrine is situated are recorded as the founding site of the nation of Japan
Jimmu became the first ruler of Japan in 660 BC
according to Japan’s oldest extant myth-histories
The Kojiki is translated as The Record of Ancient Matters
and the Nihon Shoki as The Chronicles of Japan
Japan’s founding is celebrated on February 11
The main features of Kashihara Jingu are the main shrine building and the Chokushi-kan
which will be specially opened to the public this autumn
Japanese visitors say that they feel “a sense of transparency,” according to the shrine office
The buildings are surrounded by artificial forests
which were originally created by planted prayer trees in the early years of the Showa Era beginning from 1926
Subsequently the trees grew into greater natural forests
the place has become a spot where visitors feel the glory of nature
During the special exhibition, passengers who use JR Central Japan’s online ticketing service “Smart EX” to purchase reserved seats on bullet trains arriving at Kyoto or Shin-Osaka stations will receive a promotional gift if they show their ticket when visiting the shrine
The memorial items are small plaques made of aged wood from the shrine’s sacred torii (gate) arches which are now under reconstruction
The newly-constructed Torii arches will welcome prayers and visitors beginning October 23
coinciding with the opening of the exhibition
The shrine also has shops selling amulets and other items for good fortune for interested visitors
Access: 54 minutes from JR Kyoto station to Kashihara Jingu mae station via Kintetsu express trains

‘house with black ceiling’ by toru kashihara architects is located in a block surrounded by a logistical highway that connects tokyo with the western area of japan
the area was densely occupied by small factories once
it was transformed into a residential zone
has been converted into a family home that maintains spatial fragments of its previous use while ensuring a warm
comfortable living space for its residents
in order to ‘make townspeople forget that it was once a factory’
the japanese architecture studio change the building’s envelope from worn-out wavy slate to black galvalume steel
the studio left the steel structural members of the factory building as it was to ‘remind the residents the family business that their parents ran.’ most of the space on the ground level encloses a large warehouse
while a small entrance leads to the residential area on the upper floor
a steep spiral staircase like a beanstalk rises winding around a steel column
landing in the elongated multipurpose hall
toru kashihara architects has lifted the roof higher than before and added high windows that introduce sunlight and natural air into the room
two floating floors made of steel grating allow residents and their pet cats to enjoy sunbathing
while the sliding door between the hall and dining room opens up to transform the two spaces into a large
‘the wind captured from the dining room is exhausted through the high window of the hall due to the chimney effect
and you can feel comfortable natural ventilation during spring to autumn,’ explains the japanese studio
the floors and walls inside the residential part of the home are finished with wood
transforming the inorganic factory space into a place where people can live comfortably
meanwhile, the black painted steel members float in the wooden room and melt into the dark

Nara Prefecture--An iron sword that at more than 2 meters long ranks as the largest intact ancient blade ever discovered in Japan is heavily oxidized after being buried in soil for centuries
making cleaning and restoration a drawn-out process
The artifact was unearthed late last year at the Tomiomaruyama kofun
the nation’s largest round kofun burial mound
The site dates to the second half of the fourth century
The sword was shown to the media at the Nara prefectural Archaeological Institute of Kashihara here for the first time on June 27
It is 2.37 meters long and about 6 cm wide and of a type called “dakoken,” meaning the blade is slightly bent
The Nara city board of education unearthed the artifact
Both items were covered with soil when they were found
The Nara prefectural Archaeological Institute of Kashihara
The sword was shown to media representatives June 27 after the soil was removed from one side of the blade
the institute determined that the sword was originally housed in a wooden sheath
though from which type of tree is not known
Officials also found traces of lacquer on the sheath and the hilt
They believe that red pigment made from cinnabar adorned the sheath and the hilt
Officials expect to finish removing soil from the other side of the sword this autumn
it remains to be seen when the sword will be shown to the public
a professor of archaeology at Nara University
and an expert on swords from the Kofun Period (third century to seventh century)
said the sword was very likely a burial accessory
Toyoshima noted that the sword was buried not just as a blade but with the decorative sheath and hilt
He added that part of the hilt and the sheath appeared to overlap
“The entire picture will emerge when officials turn the sword over and carefully remove the soil.”

Nara Prefecture--Whoever was laid to rest in an ancient burial mound that is renowned for its “Asuka beauties” murals was placed in an elegant cedar coffin coated in black lacquer with gold-copper alloy and copper fittings
Researchers used computer graphics to create a reproduction of the coffin based on fragments found at the site
The Takamatsuzuka burial mound in Asuka in the prefecture is believed to have been built between the late seventh century and early eighth century
The murals are designated as a national treasure
A team from the Archaeological Institute of Kashihara here and the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties in Nara estimated the coffin measured 199.5 centimeters by 58 cm and was placed at the center of the mound’s stone chamber
Past research established that the coffin was coated on the outside with black lacquer and its inside was painted with red pigment with traces of mercury
It remains unknown for whom the tomb was built
but clearly it was someone of very high rank
along with fragments of the coffin and 15 decorative fittings made of gold-copper alloy and copper
The two institutes studied how the fittings came together for their latest research
The image of the coffin was jointly produced by Tama Art University in Tokyo and the Archaeological Institute of Kashihara

The hometown of Capcom's founder and president recently erected a bronze statue of Chun-Li in the city and apparently won't be the last Street Fighter character to be immortalized there either
Kenzo Tsujimoto was born in Kashihara City in the Nara prefecture of Japan in 1940
and though he left for Osaka over a decade before starting Capcom
The bronze Chun-Li statue stands around 70 cm / 28 inches tall by itself and 150 cm / ~59 inches including its stone base after receiving around 5.5 million yen (~$37,000) in donations for its creation according to the city's website
Chun was set up outside of front of the Kashihara City Hall, which wasn't made to celebrate Capcom's 40th anniversary
but rather the 30th anniversary of the educational short film Street Fighter II: Return to the Fujiwara Capital that you likely never heard of before

The film was created to highlight the ancient capital of Japan from over 1,300 years ago where Kashihara is today with Ryu
Honda slipping back through time — and without doing any fighting
Ryu got his golden statue outside of the city's Tourism Exchange Center last year
and it seems they plan to do the same for Ken and Honda in the future too to round out all of the characters from the short
Kashihara and Capcom agreed to allow the city to use Street Fighter characters to help promote the area and encourage more tourism where they've also made other items for the fighting game including manhole covers of all things
Though it remained largely unknown outside of Japan for many years without a DVD release
Street Fighter II: Return to the Fujiwara Capital is now readily available online and even with English subtitles
