Tokyo
Check out this otherworldly public storm drain just outside of Tokyo
If you’ve already seen Tokyo’s most famous tourist attractions, you’ll want to set your sights on some of the more remote locations in and around the capital. One such spot is the otherworldly Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel in Kasukabe
Affectionately known as the Disaster Prevention Underground Temple
the tunnel is a whopping 50 metres underground and is used to prevent flooding in the Greater Tokyo area during a major natural disaster such as a tsunami or typhoon
the massive tunnel is open to the public for viewing
Its towering architecture has made it a popular spot for visitors – it has even been used as a filming location for music videos and other projects
The best way to explore the Disaster Prevention Underground Temple is by joining a guided tour
which costs just ¥1,000 per person and takes about 55 minutes
you can learn about the facility and explore at your own leisure.
including the Pit Experience Course (¥3,000 for 110 minutes) for a visit to the drain's 70m-deep shaft
There's also the Impeller Exploration Course (¥4,000 for 110 minutes) for those who want to explore the pressure regulating tank.
The newest of these tours is the Underground River Walking Adventure Course (¥15,000 for 240 minutes)
where you can explore previously off-limits areas
including walking through an underground river with waters around 50 centimetres deep
Do note that all tours are conducted in Japanese and will be cancelled in the event of sudden weather changes
The storm drain is approximately 30 minutes on foot from Minami-Sakurai Station
but can also be accessed via community buses from the north exit of the station (just get off at the Ryukyukan stop)
If this underground tunnel sounds like your kind of excursion, you can find out how to book a tour on the website

Supermarket chain Ito-Yokado on Sunday closed its store in Kasukabe
that was known as the model for the "Sato-Kokonokado" store that appears in the popular anime series "Crayon Shin-chan."
Many customers and fans gathered and gave applause and words of gratitude when the store was closed.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
"Sato-Kokonokado is still operating in the anime," the studio that makes "Crayon Shin-chan," said in a statement
The closure was part of efforts by Ito-Yokado's parent
to restructure its struggling supermarket operations
The Kasukabe store opened in 1972 and moved to the current location in 1996
"I came to the store to say goodbye," said a 53-year-old woman from Noda
who is a native of Kasukabe and said she had shopped at the store even before its relocation
I didn't want (the operator) to shut it down," said a 26-year-old man from the city of Akishima in western Tokyo
Seven & I Holdings last month announced a restructuring plan that focuses the company on its convenience store operations in an effort to counter an acquisition offer from Canadian convenience store chain Alimentation Couche-Tard
The Japanese company is also considering a management buyout

The first movie in the franchise set in India adopting a musical format might be a choice fans have seen coming
but that doesn't make it any less exciting
Bollywood not only produces the highest number of films per year
but it's arguably one of India's biggest cultural exports
And a Bollywood dance number from the character might be long overdue
After some censorship and some heavy adaptation of the script
but without the cartoon nudity or risque jokes
many of those jokes were laced with PG pop-culture reference closer to home
with Shinchan bursting into song every now and again as Indian kids imitating movies often do
experiencing the country's spicy curry and scorching heat first hand
If we're listing things that are beloved in both Japan and India
most would think of curry or Shinnosuke Nohara off the top of their head
Japan has also been known to enjoy its share of Indian flair with films like S
Rajamouli's RRR earning over 2.2 billion yen (approximately ₹1,27,69,92,791) in Japanese theaters
and getting "cheering screenings." So hopefully
alongside being the first Crayon Shin-chan film set in the country
this will be the first film in the franchise to get a theatrical release in India as well
Hashimoto, who has previously directed many films in the franchise including the 30th film Eiga Crayon Shin-chan Mononoke Ninja Chinpūden, is directing the new film. Ueno (Eiga Crayon Shin-chan Mononoke Ninja Chinpūden, Eiga Crayon Shin-chan Shinkon Ryokō Hurricane) is returning to the franchise to write the screenplay

Kasukabe Jaycee members at Pasadena City Hall with Councilman Gene Masuda
Pasadena Jaycees welcomed members of their sister Jaycee chapter of Kasukabe
COVID-19-caused pause in the Jaycees’ long-running homestay exchange program
The two chapters had alternated hosting every summer since 1985
with one chapter sending Jaycee members and local high school and college students to experience the other’s country and culture
both chapters said they were excited for the exchange to resume in person in Pasadena
Visitors stay in the homes of volunteer hosts to get a full cultural immersion experience
The hosting Jaycee chapter plans various activities and sightseeing
The Kasukabe members also toured Pasadena City Hall and met with Pasadena City Councilmember Gene Masuda
said “I thank the Pasadena Jaycees for a rich and wonderful experience
I hope to see you next year in Kasukabe to repay your kindness.”
One of the most special parts of the trip was the Japanese daruma
a Japanese doll where one eye is colored in when making a wish
and the second eye is colored in when the wish comes true
The Kasukabe Jaycees sent the daruma to Pasadena last year when the exchange was unable to take place in person due to COVID restrictions
with a wish that the chapters would reunite in person
It was an emotional moment when the second eye was colored in as the chapters celebrated their reunion
“It was amazing to have our two chapters back together in person after two years,” says Irene Guillen
“At a time with so much division and negativity
it is very special to celebrate our differences and friendship across cultures.”
The Kasukabe exchange is one of the most unique and meaningful projects for the Pasadena Jaycees
The two chapters have become a long-distance family that reunites annually to learn from and celebrate with each other
The Pasadena Junior Chamber of Commerce (nicknamed “Jaycees”) began in 1929 as a volunteer and leadership training organization for people ages 21 to 40. Japan lies the world’s largest underground floodwater facility
Massive man-made concrete caverns that make up the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel
sprawl under the cities surface-level infrastructure
The large underground drainage system was built to prevent catastrophic flooding of the waterways that surround the city
Due to surges in rainy and typhoon seasons
the local geography is stricken by large flooding events each year
The city itself is located on the outskirts of Tokyo in the Saitama prefecture
there is little that hints at just what lies beneath
Construction on the project began all the way back in 1992
and spanned the course of roughly a decade and a half
While on paper the project contains only five containment silos
the significance of their size will give any onlooker pause
Each silo is 213 ft (65 mt) high and 104 ft (32 mt) in diameter
These larger silos are then connected by 4 mi (6.3 km) of large tunnels
all at a depth of 165 ft (50 mt) below the surface
Pillars weighing 500 tons each support the main reservoir
a concrete tank measuring 580 ft (177 mt) long by 83 ft (25.4 mt) high
Inside of this tank sit 78 10 MW pumps that are capable of transferring roughly 200 tons of water into the nearby Edo River each and every second
Staff at the facility are on constant alert, especially during Japan’s rainy and typhoon seasons from June to late October. The reservoir has helped reduce the number of homes affected by water damage in nearby areas by around 90%
the surge tank is actually used as a tourist attraction
Visitors can tour the site for about 3000 Japanese Yen
While any jet-hopping civil engineer might be bursting to take a trip and see this underground marvel
it should be noted that the tours are only conducted in Japanese
it’s natural to wonder what the city did before they built the Kasukabe Reservoir
How did a bustling town survive seasonal catastrophic flooding
the infrastructure was sparse enough that the floods weren’t considered to be a major issue
much of the region’s farmland had been replaced with housing and industrial facilities
significantly decreasing the opportunity for rainfall and snowmelt to seep underground
When the suburbs of Tokyo were initially being developed, the sprawl occurred so fast that little thought was given to flood control. However, the city soon learned its lesson as it suffered numerous catastrophic floods
As the population grew and more and more of the ground was covered with non-porous concrete
engineers knew that something had to be done to remedy the situation
1992 marked the beginning of the fightback against catastrophic flooding in the region due to the construction of the outer underground discharge channel tunnels
This massive system works through a system of switches that engineers can control during high rain or flooding events. Due to the series of tunnels that run throughout the city, connected to the underground reservoir, engineers can direct nearly all of the drainage from the city into the 5 large silo storage tanks
The end goal of the system isn’t just to hold water though. In flooding events that have a rapid onset, the first task of mitigating the flooding risk is handling the surge. The underground reservoirs are built so large in order to handle large volumes of water that rapidly flow into the city during surges
The water that sits in the tanks can then be discharged more slowly into the Edogawa River
carrying it through natural channels into Tokyo Bay
The system is often viewed by other engineers as an interesting solution to large flooding events brought on by rapid population growth
The Kasukabe Reservoir is regarded by many civil engineers as a successful solution to the problem of flooding
In fact, a similar flood facility is being built in Osaka Prefecture, which is scheduled for completion in 2044. And even more may be needed as global warming increases the prevalence and frequency of severe storms
According to Japan’s Meteorological Agency
the number of typhoons that threaten Tokyo each year has jumped 1.5 times in the last four decades
But back to the reservoir being a tourist attraction
Why would tourists want to see massive underground concrete caverns
the design of the underwater tanks gave them a sort of cathedral-esque look
Due to the large support columns scattered throughout
the empty tanks present as elegant tranquil pieces of engineering sitting below the bustling city above
For an animated demonstration of how the system works

It has been called Japan’s underground “Parthenon,” a cavernous complex charged with protecting Tokyo and surrounding areas from catastrophic flooding — a risk experts say is growing as climate change advances
there is little to give away the cathedral-like feat of engineering that forms the main reservoir of the Kasukabe flood tank
the largest facility of its kind in the world
The immense structure — deep enough in some parts to hold the Statue of Liberty — funnels away and redirects excess water from storms and typhoons
protecting one of the globe’s most populous capitals
Soaring pillars weighing 500 tonnes support the main reservoir
a bare concrete tank the length of two soccer pitches
especially during Japan’s rainy and typhoon seasons from June to October
typhoons and even daily rainfall can cause damage by submerging houses and roads,” said the site’s head
The reservoir has helped reduce the number of homes affected by water damage in nearby areas by about 90 percent
In Tokyo alone — a city cut through by more than 100 rivers — there are 10 other underground reservoirs and three flood tunnels
and more flood-protection structures are being built
a flood facility similar to the Kasukabe reservoir is being built at a cost of ¥366 billion (US$3.5 billion)
Construction is scheduled to finish in 2044
as climate change makes what were previously once-in-a-century storms increasingly common
has a climate in which floods and heavy rain tend to occur frequently
now global warming is advancing,” said Kei Yoshimura
professor of meteorology at the University of Tokyo and an expert on flooding
Massive flooding and landslides in July killed more than 80 people in western Japan
while a typhoon last year killed nearly 100 people in the east
The Japan Meteorological Agency says that the number of typhoons a year that threaten Tokyo has jumped 1.5 times in the past four decades
The Kasukabe reservoir is connected to a 6.3km tunnel and the system can release accumulated water into the nearby Edogawa River at a rate equivalent to discharging a 25m swimming pool every second
the facility is used about seven times a year
Excess water flows in automatically and operators pump it out from the main tank when it approaches capacity
This year it had already been used seven times by last month
with water discharged twice after an unusually long rainy season
Official studies credit the single facility with having saved ¥148 billion in cleanup costs so far
Japan’s anti-flood systems are considered world class
with the nation having learned bitter lessons from several major disasters after World War II
say that infrastructure alone is not enough
and Japanese authorities have stepped up efforts to remind people to evacuate their homes early when requested
The Kasukabe system accepts visitors when it is not in use
in part to promote the importance of disaster management
but it’s only one defense measure,” said Toru Tamai
so floods are a clearer and more present danger than any other natural disasters

It will release the action runner game digitally in Fall 2022
This game will contain Japanese voiceovers with subtitles in Japanese
Flaming Kasukabe Runner originated as a free-to-play mobile game that Bushiroad launched for Android and iOS devices in 2016. Although the company also made English and Spanish localizations
the global version of the original mobile game is no longer available
In early 2020, Bushiroad released a single-purchase version of Flaming Kasukabe Runner on Nintendo Switch worldwide. This game is still available on the North American Nintendo eShop at $9.99
Although Flaming Kasukabe Runner will be the first Shin-Chan game to appear on PCs, it is not the only game that receives an English localization. Neos Corporation will release a global version of Shin-chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation – The Endless Seven-Day Journey on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in August 2022
is available on Nintendo Switch worldwide and mobile devices in Japan
Bushiroad will release the Crayon Shin-Chan running action game on PC via Steam in Fall 2022
Kasukabe has a very high level of seismic activity
Based on data from the past 25 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900
there are about 2,600 quakes on average per year in or near Kasukabe
Kasukabe has had at least 2 quakes above magnitude 7 since 1900
which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently
probably on average approximately every 60 to 65 years
The quake had a shallow depth of 54 km (33 mi) and was not felt (or at least not reported so)
There were also 24 quakes below magnitude 2.0 which people don't normally feel
