CLAIMING the first national title belt in kickboxing in the 65kg fight division
and flying the Chimbu flag high at the recently concluded at the Last Man Standing Kick-boxing Tournament is Norman Kawage
The twenty-seven-year-old who hails from Kundiawa said that since joining the code in 2015
he is aiming to one day hold a world title in his weight division
“this is the first time that I am here and I am young and still have a long way to go and there is a lot of titles and I will still continue with training and motivate myself to go on.”
Kawage said the title belt is dedicated to the Good Lord
that through his grace he was able to achieve that and
Kawage said he left school due to kick-boxing
“I attended school till grade 8 and left my school due to this code so dedicated everything after that to God
and this is my dream and aim and I feel satisfied that Chimbu is happy of this achievement and so is my coach and president that this is the first time for such a win.”
“I started my fight and game in 2015 and this is my ninth year in the code
i have played a lot of fights and my trainer has trained me and motivated me and later Jeffrey Daka the ironman got me and trained me and I trained in his team and that has motivated me to become a heavyweight fighter.”
Kawage said before he left the province for the tournament here in Port Moresby he thought to himself that
“I thought of the game and like they’ve said I saw the title belt and believed that I got this and the belt is mine and I didn’t have any other thoughts and its my dream and aim that I got it and got two knock outs to get to the finals and believed that I got it and put on my best fight.”
Chimbu renowned fighter and Norman’s Coach John Kwiwa said they didn’t prepare for long due to short notice
I want to say thank you to our President for Chimbu Kick-boxing Otto Yuak as we didn’t have a lot of sponsors
and he was the only one that stepped up and was behind us from camp to travelling here to compete.”
Kwiwa said he hopes to impart as much as he can to the younger fighters before
he takes a leave from the code of kickboxing
Chimbu Kickboxing Association President Otto Yuak
“the reason I got behind the code was I saw that there was a lot of talent that can be exposed in bringing this code to the next level and and as the president it was during this term that the belt was won so will be backing this sport in Chimbu and will continue on in this code.”
A total of eleven fighters were brought over from Chimbu
one of which was Kawage who walked away a champion

LIVING every week to survive the match over the weekend is the words from Hela Wigmen coach Ian Yaro as his men defeated the Lae Tigers 32-12 in the minor semifinals yesterday at National Football stadium
minor premiers Hagen Eagles defeating Enga Mioks 16-12
Wigmen came from behind and defeated Tigers to survive another weekend of finals as they focus on taking the Enga Mioks this Sunday to decide who will face Mt Hagen Eagle in the 2024 grand final
“The rivalry started in about 2014 when I was with Tigers and I understand them,” he said
“They’ve (Tigers) have been a mainstay in the finals and they’ve been dominating this competition for a long time
We knew it is going to be a tough battle but at the end of the day
we came out on top and we just want to thank everyone that came out to support us
“Our experienced players in the likes of Solom Pokare
Siki Konden and Bala Isaac stood up when we needed them.”
Tigers opened up the scoreboard with a penalty goal by Jacky Winas after a dangerous contact inside the Wigmen’s 20-metre line
the two points lead did not last long as Wigmen’s hookers and two tryscorer Woodie Kawage scored their opener off the ruck
Kawage was too strong for Tigers defence which saw him drag fullback Douglas David and Jarran Pitten into their own try line
Tigers quickly responded with try through Winger Dickson Otto in the 21st minute followed by his second in the 31st minute to give his side a 12-4 lead
The determined Wigmen players did not settle for less as they searched all options and eventually came out with a Kaupa Sipa try
The fullback’s try closed the scoreline 12-10 as they went into the break
Wigmen returned even stronger with their wreaking ball forward Jacob Lot coming off the bench and went straight into knocking down Tigers defence in front of the vocal 10,559 spectators
It was until Kawage made a break and sent utility Trevor Solu under the uprights for a converted try 10 minutes into the second-half
The finals footy experience packed Wigmen side continued their attack as they sliced through Tigers defence in search of more points until centre Terence Wemin crossed for a converted try in the 72th minute
They followed through with Kawage getting his double
The Wigmen were blessed with two penalty goals by Solu as they ended the Tigers season
A CLOGGED culvert and lack of proper drainage are the two main reasons why a pool of water has remained stagnant on one side of the Konedobu Oval
This was the explanation given by the oval’s caretaker
has been living at the fringes of the oval in the last five-years making garden and cleaning the place
“The reason why you see this pool of water is because there is blockage with the culvert that allows for the water to flow out,” Mr Kawage said
there are no proper drainage around the field to channel water into the outlet culvert,” he said
the water quickly builds up and turns into a pool,” Mr Kawage said
“It has been like this for the last five-years since I began living here,” he said
the National Capital District Commission (NCDC)
has awarded a contract to a local company to construct a drainage from one side of the field towards the water outlet culvert
He said the company has employed some men including himself to work on the drainage project
“I don’t know if we are also given the work to clear out the culvert and build drain on the other side of the field as well,” Mr Kawage said
we will drain the water out of the field,” he said
when there is high-tide on the other side of the road where the other end of the outlet culvert is located
seawater and rubbish sometimes flows back inside the culvert blocking the passage way
He said a long-term and permanent solution was needed
water will still be forced back and deposited in the oval causing the pool to form
He added that the Konedobu Oval might be sitting on a waterbed because the water does not quickly get absorbed into the soil like other parts of the locality and city
