ESR has raised US$245m (€222m) for its inaugural domestic fund in Japan
which will fund the ESR Kawanishi Distribution Centre 3 (DC3)
The real asset manager said 14 domestic investors
together with a long-standing European capital partner
ESR Kawanishi DC3 marks the third and final ready-built facility within the full-service ESR Kawanishi Distribution and Techno Park
said: “ESR Kawanishi is the most accomplished realisation of ESR’s product vision in Japan to date
Customer demand is markedly higher for logistics space in large-scale park developments and is set to grow even further with the current re-onshoring of manufacturing activity
“This underpins ESR’s differentiated investment thesis based on accelerating rental growth
the strategic decision we made years ago to form an in-house team dedicated to land sourcing and rezoning enables us to offer our capital partners access to such investment opportunities.”
said: “Repeat involvement of domestic investors will make ESR’s project funding more resilient
“It will also bring our foreign investment partners privileged market and governance insights that position them ideally to capitalise on the unique opportunities offered by the Japanese private assets market.”
said: “Our commitment to uplift our communities guides our approach to taking long-term minority stakes in large strategic land parcels to maximise their potential and value
we have been engaging with landowners to assist in the rezoning of land and to advance our shared goal of driving economic growth for local communities with a clear roadmap for sustainable development.”

Once, they were heroes. From 2014 on, hundreds of U.S. and international volunteers traveled to Syrian Kurdistan to join Kurdish-led forces battling the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
As they helped turn the tide and drive ISIS out of their one-time capital Raqqa — backed by U.S
airstrikes and limited ground support — young Leftists and U.S
military veterans were martyred side-by-side under the antifascist flag
Sensationalist and sexed-up media coverage accompanied them into battle
Western media were enthralled by the spectacle of idealistic young North Americans fighting alongside Kurdish women in a life-or-death struggle against a resurgent strain of authoritarian Islamism
Jake Gyllenhaal and Hillary Clinton got behind movie projects documenting their role in an international conflict that has drawn comparisons to the role of foreign fighters battling fascism in the Spanish Civil War
Syria’s Kurdish-led forces have been abandoned by their one-time Western allies
and the global press no longer cares about the “heroes” of the ISIS war
the volunteers returned home to face struggles familiar to veterans of other conflicts
and European governments surveil and harass the returning volunteers at Turkey’s behest
Their deaths have inspired fellow international veterans with the Syrian Kurdish forces to organize mutual aid and demand better treatment from the United States and other governments
we don’t get recognition,” says surviving U.K
“But we do suffer all the downsides of being in a war zone.”
a number of captured Islamist militants have escaped
those suspected of terror offenses can be detained without charge at the border
questioned without the right to silence and forced under threat of imprisonment to surrender phone passwords
At least 10 international volunteers in Syrian Kurdistan have killed themselves in recent years
a 37-year-old U.K.-born Kurd who volunteered as a combat medic
was detained upon arrival at Luton airport when he traveled back to the United Kingdom to attend the funeral of another U.K
who was killed clearing ISIS landmines in Raqqa
I was escorted out of the plane by four armed officers,” Agir recalls
It took months for the police to confirm that “nothing [he] had done was illegal.”
from the U.K.’s Kurdistan Solidarity Network
describes these policies as a “symptom of the close relationship between the British and Turkish states.” A further battery of “intimidation tactics,” he says
are used to target international volunteers and their supporters
and armed raids on home and work addresses
so should stay away from comrades because it might put them in danger
It carries a huge toll for people’s mental health,” he says
Another ex-volunteer, Josh Schooler
lost his job at a Manchester school following a raid by armed police
Although British judges have repeatedly thrown these cases out
surviving veterans and legal campaigners say the prosecutions exact heavy personal
These policies have impacted the lives of civilian volunteers as well as combatants. The author of this piece was held in a Greek jail for two months and banned from all European territory as a result of his journalism work in Rojava
ecological and women’s activists are all routinely harassed at the border and prevented from traveling; a number of these civilian volunteers have also taken their own lives upon return
bailed and forced to report three times weekly to a police station simply for supporting an ecological delegation traveling to Rojava
“We were fighting a war in the U.K.’s interest,” says Agir
who hauled hundreds of casualties out of rubble in Syria
“I’d like my government to stop treating us like we’re the enemy.”
State persecution compounds the isolation experienced by volunteers after returning to civilian life in the west
Life in the revolutionary Kurdish movement is marked by a profound spirit of common struggle and 24-hour communal living
Though many volunteers struggle initially with the discipline and alien social standards of living and fighting in Kurdistan
they find it even harder to readjust after leaving it
“I miss being part of a collective endeavor
that feeling of living for something bigger than yourself,” says Agir
the reentry of volunteers is assisted by Kurdish diaspora populations
left-wing support networks and active solidarity organizations
deprived of meaning and sociality upon returning,” says Italian volunteer Agit Berneri
“It made a big difference for me to keep in touch with the hevals [Kurdish comrades] at times of distress.”
attracted more by the chance to battle ISIS than any sympathy with the Kurdish movement’s left-wing ideology
they often slip through the cracks upon their return
went unnoticed by the volunteer community for almost a year
prompting distress and fury once the news reached his former comrades-in-arms
“He appeared way more stable and psychologically strong than most of us,” recalls Berneri
“Most of us didn’t even know he was back to the U.S.”
Lee-Kawanishi was 22 when he took his own life on Oct
He had spent four years on the frontlines of the Kurds’ existential struggle against ISIS and Turkey
recalls that her teenage son was “very sensitive to justice” and emerged from a spell of teenage depression in 2016 to find meaning and direction in the Kurdish struggle for democracy
he experienced a combination of being “pulled” by the Kurdish struggle to establish a female-led
and being “pushed” away from individualistic life in Western societies
The emotional intensity of his years on the frontlines made it difficult for Lee-Kawanishi to adjust back home in New York
further darkening an already difficult reentry process
losing hope and purpose,” his mother recalls
“We didn’t have health insurance for him and [were] waiting for that until we could get him to see a psychiatrist for medication and therapy
None of the help we were waiting for came to fruition.”
The FBI would show up again after his death
The experience of the international volunteers contrasts sharply with the official respect and material support afforded to U.S
military in Iraq and Afghanistan before volunteering combat in Syria
He thought he was well prepared for Rojava
but the experience left him with severe PTSD
I was homeless for about eight months,” he recalls
describing a drunk-driving incident as a “passive suicide attempt.” As a disabled veteran of the U.S
Hagg was court-ordered to take anger management classes
as well as undergo government-provided psychiatric counseling
where he is working toward a degree and living with his 14-year-old daughter
“I am a testament to the power of counseling and the desire to overcome disabilities,” Hagg says
“[But] veterans from Rojava do not have the same access to resources.”
Surviving volunteers have begun organizing to provide those resources themselves
rather than waiting for help from Western governments
“There is no happy ending to this story,” says Thompson
keep their images tacked to our walls — and call out our society for not taking care of people who tried to make the world a better place.”
“We fought for the values of democracy and women’s rights with the backing of Western governments
We don’t deserve to be treated as suspects.”
Upon hearing the news of Lee-Kawanishi’s suicide
set up a support network for former volunteers
“We didn’t know there was something wrong [with Lee-Kawanishi] until we heard he had taken his life
if there was just some connection to the community …” he says
Agir’s informal group holds regular cross-continental calls for veterans and provides a space for psychological and practical support
the Kurdistan Solidarity Network works with veterans to provide a concrete range of financial
As these fragile networks struggle to commemorate the dead and fight for the living
governments could take concrete steps to offer the veterans fair treatment
beginning with pushing back against Turkish influence detrimental to their own interests
Kurdish representatives have long urged Washington
London and international bodies to remove Kurdish organizations from terror lists and push Ankara to reopen peace talks with the Kurdish movement
Such a political recalibration seems more distant than ever
but is necessary to release anti-ISIS veterans from unjust lifetime sentences of surveillance and harassment
Rojava remains the one place where the international veterans are afforded their just place of honor
their photos displayed in gardens and graveyards
“We didn’t go to Syria expecting glory or payment,” says Thompson
“But we fought for the values of democracy and women’s rights with the backing of Western governments

Operation K was planned for the night of March 4, 1942, and it was meant to be conducted by five massive long-range Kawanishi H8Ks. However, operational issues meant only two flying boats were available for the mission
The aircraft were originally earmarked for mainland bombing campaigns against targets in California and Texas
the Japanese needed to know how repairs were going in Hawaii
as they were also each able to deliver a payload of four 550-pound bombs
they could further disrupt the Pacific Fleet
The first strike on Pearl Harbor had been viewed as a tremendous success by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN)
but subsequent reconnaissance missions had confirmed that the US Navy’s salvage efforts were progressing at a rapid pace
American maritime warning systems had been strengthened since then, so approaching Hawaii by sea was impossible. Therefore, the Japanese military pinned its hopes on long-range bombers. The primary target was the “Ten-Ten” dry dock
since hitting the ships undergoing repairs would delay the Pacific Fleet’s recovery and improve the odds for the IJN
The date was set to coincide with a full moon
in order to provide maximum visibility for the reconnaissance part of the operation
As the mission got underway, radar stations on Kauai noticed the flying boats, prompting Consolidated PBY Catalinas and Curtiss P-40 Warhawks to take to the skies in search of the enemy aircraft
but also hindering visibility for the crews onboard
The H8Ks were supposed to attack in tandem
but the men in the second couldn’t hear the orders coming from the lead flying boat
and their bombs were dropped without proper targeting
The first H8K’s bombs fell on a mountainside
There were no casualties and just a few windows were broken
The second’s munitions fell into the Pacific Ocean
The flying boats returned to the Marshall Islands
The only real outcome of Operation K was that the United States found out that the Japanese could still penetrate its airspace and leave without being intercepted. The US Army and Navy then blamed each other for the nighttime explosions near the school
The mission also sparked fears of additional Japanese raids against the US

A live-action film adaptation of Jun Mutsuki’s popular manga “Buzzy Noise,” which offers a realistic depiction of the music scene
opened in theaters across the country on May 3
is a condominium caretaker who enjoys composing and playing music by himself on his computer
a hobby which shuts him out from the world
who lives in the condo directly above Kiyosumi
has for some time been touched by his music
a broken-hearted Ushio jumps into Kiyosumi’s room from the balcony
The film’s soundtrack was created by Yaffle
a music producer for Kaze Fujii and other artists
who has credits on a variety of film scores
It’s his first time being cast as the lead in a film
a key character who gets Kiyosumi to come out of his shell
Kawanishi and Sakurada recently sat with The Yomiuri Shimbun to talk about some highlights from the film and to share a little about themselves
The Yomiuri Shimbun: What was the atmosphere like during the shoot
Sakurada: The social anxiety was five to five between Mr
Kawanishi and me [in that we were equally anxious]
but when it came to feeling of nervousness
it was more like 10 to zero because I’d already worked with the director
Sakurada: I hope you’ll let me know what they were
Kawanishi: The scene that made the biggest impression on me was the one where Ushio breaks the window of my character’s room
Ushio’s sadness at that time and her feeling of wanting to break something to get someone’s attention came across strongly in just her facial expression
We were watching the monitor behind the set
Kazama is a director who is very particular about every detail
But I got the OK from him for that scene after a single take
The Yomiuri Shimbun: What did you find difficult about playing your roles
Kawanishi: Kiyosumi is not a very talkative person
so it was hard having to show his emotions using only facial expressions and the direction and movement of my eyes
The director went to great lengths to explain many things to me
Although I could understand his words well
there were times when my abilities were not up to the task of doing what he told me to do
Sakurada: The director told me about a lot of things
like the background of my character and her feelings from scene to scene
he also said he wanted me to talk more about myself
He helped me bring out all kinds of things that had been asleep inside me
which I think I was able to reflect in portraying Ushio
so I got very conscious about how to achieve the right balance and how to portray her behaviors convincingly
Kawanishi: I was able to last until the end thanks to all the staff
I owe everyone in the truest sense of the word
Kawanishi has many of Kiyosumi’s characteristics
Kawanishi who can replicate Kiyosumi’s subdued personality and composed air
Sakurada: I struggled with the Kansai dialect
Sakurada: You got more instructions than I did
The Yomiuri Shimbun: What are some highlights from the film
Kawanishi: Bonds with your friends and encounters with people can change your life
I hope that gets across because I’ve cherished meeting new people myself
That’s probably the point I want people to feel the most
Sakurada: The impression I have is that the characters in this film are all very clumsy
You can try looking at your own troubles through any one of the characters’ eyes
I think the work will make you realize that there are various ways to solve your problems
And the scenes with musical performances are a must because everyone worked so hard on them
For finger drumming (making drum sounds by beating electronic pads with fingers)
I took lessons and brought the (drum machine) home for about two months to practice
The Yomiuri Shimbun: Both of you have successful careers in a wide range of fields
Kawanishi: I’m the kind of person who doesn’t think much about the future
but there are countless times when I’ve thought
“I want to play a role like this.” I really do want to do everything
I’ve released the film’s theme song as a solo singer
I hope I can go on to release a song all by myself
so I’d like to appear in various productions
so I want to broaden my mind by going to a bunch of different places and listening to many people’s opinions
Kawanishi: You’d better hold back on that one
Kawanishi comes from Hyogo Prefecture and belongs to JO1
an 11-member boyband that has appeared in NHK’s “Kohaku Utagassen” (“Red and White Year-End Song Festival”) for two years in a row since 2022
He starred in the TV miniseries “Cool Doji Danshi” (“Play It Cool

With International Men’s Day falling on Nov
attention turns to an increasing number of new fathers taking parental leave
Many who did so still faced hurdles afterward
Workplace bias and career setbacks are among them
leading some to leave their jobs despite recent surveys in Japan indicating taking paternity leave is a growing trend
is currently on paternity leave for one year and is largely responsible for his three children
changing his 10-month-old daughter's diaper and helping his 7-year-old son get ready for school
After seeing his 4-year-old son off to nursery school
he spends his day at home caring for his daughter
“I never even considered taking paternity leave when my eldest and second sons were born,” he said
when his wife was pregnant with their first child
Kawanishi worked as a freelance lecturer with frequent late nights
he joined a logistics company that advertised “less than 10 hours of overtime per month.”
after their eldest son was born in 2017 and started attending day care
he faced criticism from his boss who was in his 40s
When he needed to take time off for his son’s fevers
“Can your wife take time off instead?” This made him feel guilty
Seeking a more family friendly work environment
the idea of taking parental leave didn’t cross his mind as no other men around him were doing so
he joined a community where fathers share their parenting experiences
He found that taking three or six months of parental leave was common
he became the first in his department to do so
the paternity leave rate jumped from 3.2 percent in fiscal 2016 to 30.1 percent in fiscal 2023
but I think many fathers still struggle in silence without anyone to talk to,” Kawanishi said
A 46-year-old man in the Kanto region joined a consulting firm four years ago that had been certified by the government for promoting women’s participation in the workplace
and he informed his boss that he needed a day off
Having grown up in a single-father household and taken care of his younger brother
household chores and child care felt natural to him
in a workplace heavily influenced by his boss
there were some whispers that employees taking time off for their children were a “burden” on others
he began relying more on his wife for parenting duties such as taking their child to nursery school and preparing meals
he left the company and decided to go independent
faced pushback at his auditing firm after deciding to take six months of paternity leave for his first child in 2019
Several male superiors summoned him to ask
“Are you all right with missing out on promotions?” and “You could just let the mom handle the child care.”
After returning from six months of paternity leave
he began to notice excessive consideration from colleagues
Labeled a “parenting dad,” he found himself excluded from important work opportunities
“This must be what women have long experienced,” he thought
he left his job and started working independently
He now equally shares household chores and child care with his wife
has been offering career support services for working parents since 2019
but they now make up 30 percent of all registrants
The firm sees around 1,000 new registrations annually
with those in their late 30s being the largest group
Most of the companies XTalent connects its registrants with are growing startups
mainly in the information technology sector
“If companies don’t create environments where people with diverse circumstances can continue working
who also struggled to balance work and child care
Job search site operator Mynavi recently surveyed 800 employees in their 20s to 40s
39.5 percent of men who had taken parental leave said they had either left their jobs
switched careers or considered doing so due to difficulties balancing work and child care
The government has set a goal to raise the paternity leave rate to 50 percent by 2025 and 85 percent by 2030
a researcher at the Recruit Works Institute
“While individual attitudes and social norms are gradually changing
and systems supporting child care have improved
many companies still hold the belief that men should earn recognition through long working hours.”
“To prevent the rise of a ‘Daddy Track’—a concept similar to the ‘Mommy Track’ where women are often sidelined from important tasks after childbirth—and to curb the increase in unwanted resignations
it’s essential to change the mindset of male executives and bosses who have not actively participated in child care themselves,” he said

Sketchy records from the turn of the century indicate that he immigrated to the United States from Japan in 1900 in his early 20s
He lived in a boarding house in Thompson Springs
while working for the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad Company
he died and was buried in a lonely place in northern Grand County
the site still marked by a beautifully carved marble tombstone with his name inscribed under a decorative flower and above the words “Native of Japan.”
Cemeteries Program Manager for the Utah Division of State History Amy Barry learned that much from context and research into historic census records
“The only thing I will say about how Kawanishi is situated is that he’s facing the train,” Barry said
She has spent significant time at the site in recent weeks
working to properly record it and repair the damaged headstone
The Bureau of Land Management first took note of the tombstone in 1993
when it was observed during documentation of an old narrow-gauge railroad that was later abandoned in favor of a standard-width line
For years the tombstone lay cracked in three pieces
Barry cleaned and restored the broken pieces in her lab in the Salt Lake City area
the curatorial and collections manager for the Moab Museum
who has served as the state director of Asian Affairs
and several others joined Barry as she brought the pieces back to the site and mortared them together in place
The group hiked across desert scrub to reach the spot and watched as Barry removed clamps holding the pieces in place and mixed mortar to fill cracks in the marble
She thoughtfully rationed pigment into the mortar to match the color of the marble
The cleaning agent used on the stone will lighten it over time
and the wet mortar is darker than it will be when it dries
she donned latex gloves and started packing it into the cracks
because I can feel it better,” Barry said as she worked
There’s evidence that someone has cared for the headstone in modern times: a repair attempt cementing the marble headstone to its sandstone plinth was done in recent decades
and a fence structure around the stone was rebuilt
will actually damage the marble in the long run
She explained with fluency the chemistry of weathering
and the substances and techniques she uses to safely and successfully preserve headstones
She uses federal standards—techniques that have been lab-tested and will not damage the stone
Barry offers workshops and demonstrations around the state on correct methods for repair and preservation of headstones
Barry manages a database that tracks individual gravesites around the state
When she started with the Division of State History
the database was only available organized alphabetically
a project that ended up taking about two and a half years
The Kawanishi site was the last coordinate she mapped
and the site was compelling to her: It’s a rare physical artifact that tells the story of Japanese laborers in Utah—a story that’s been difficult to tell because of the scarcity of such objects
secured the funds needed for the conservation materials
and found out what she could about Kawanishi
He’s documented on two census records from 1900
both the federal census and one conducted by a Japanese labor agent in Salt Lake City
which Barry trusts more: the federal census
shows a casual racism in that it lists all Japanese workers as servants of the section foremen and gives all of them the same birth month
Kawanishi does not appear on 1910 census records
suggesting that he died sometime between 1900 and 1910—Barry puts the date in the earlier half of the decade
Poor record keeping means the rest of the story can only be guessed at
the flower at the top of the headstone piques interest
Both cherry and lotus blossoms are symbols of Japan; it’s possible the flower is meant to be one of these
Barry also noted that language barriers may have prevented Kawanishi’s friends from conveying a more specific request than a flower.
While the details of Kawanishi’s life are a mystery
the grave is a powerful illustration of a larger story about immigrants and labor in the western U.S
The narrow gauge Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad in Grand County was built between 1881 and 1883
it was said to be the longest narrow-gauge track in the world,” according to Richard A
Firmage’s 1996 “A History of Grand County.”
Railroad companies were busy constructing transportation lines across the United States for much of the second half of the nineteenth century
notably from China; many Chinese immigrants were also already in the country around mid-century
having joined in the gold rush in California in the 1840s
workers were still needed for ongoing maintenance
There were maintenance hubs and sidings—places where trains could be loaded
or stored—at regular intervals along the track
lived in the small towns supported by the railroad in Grand County
beginning in the late 1800s and continuing into the 1910s
When the standard-gauge tracks were completed in 1890
stranding and eventually withering some of the small towns on its route; many of the residents left the area
anti-Chinese sentiment—especially in California—festered for decades
with some blaming Chinese laborers for depressed wages
which banned entry to the United States to Chinese immigrants for the next 10 years
and began recruiting immigrants from other countries
carried exclusionist policies even further
what became known as the Gentlemen’s Agreement between the U.S
and Japan informally established that the U.S
would not place restrictions on Japanese people already in the U.S.
and Japan would not allow emigration to the United States
This was followed in 1924 by the National Origins Act
which banned immigration from Asia entirely
A form of that policy persisted up until the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act
Another historic site in Grand County attests to the continuation of anti-Asian sentiment in the U.S
a camp that had been constructed to house members of the Civilian Conservation Corps was repurposed as an isolation center for Japanese Americans during World War II
The Moab Museum is planning to look at that history in an exhibit next year; the new Utahraptor State Park
will have some interpretive material on it as well
racism and violence against Asian Americans has been on the rise—extreme incidents
covered in the national media are tragic instances in the trend
who in addition to her role as the state director of Asian Affairs has also served in leadership roles for organizations that promote minority cultures
and thanked Barry and the Division of State History for caring about the site
Especially in light of the increase in racism in recent years
the recognition of the site was very meaningful
Barry spritzed the mortar with water and wrapped it tightly in plastic wrap to keep it from drying too fast
which could cause it to shrink more and leave gaps in the crack
BLM officials would return later to remove the plastic wrap
“The BLM cannot thank the Utah Division of State History enough for making this happen,” said Lori Hunsaker
archaeologist for the Moab BLM Field Office
Barry said she is honored to have been part of preserving this piece of history
Japanese railroad workers were here,’” Barry said

‘Nightingale House’ is a residential project by Atsushi Kawanishi Architects that seeks to establish multiple connections to nature
the team has incorporated six multi-sized patios into the design
they achieve a feeling of blurring the boundaries between the outside and inside allowing these spaces to visually communicate without compromising privacy
and orientations emerge from a flat platform that tops the ground floor
clad in vertical wooden blinds that slightly inject natural lighting into the space
Each space has a unique visual connection with its own small terrace and is organically connected to the front garden via a platform
The three inner patios act as visual buffers that connect the front garden and the interior
they gently divide the house and define the interior configuration
the sleeping and the shared spaces are spread across well-lit floor levels where the gaze can escape continuously
the gardens are interwoven with the living spaces providing a flowing spatial layout for its inhabitants

Japanese designer Ryohei Kawanishi merged Isa Genzken with military uniforms
Tucked away in the maze of warehouses in New York’s Sunset Park is a clothing factory called Fashion Queen Management. On a normal day there, an army of seamstresses will produce military uniforms and bulletproof vests — a far cry from “fashion queens” — but since September 2015, a new set of hands have taken up shop in the back: a small menswear label called Landlord
Landlord’s chief executive Daniel Huang, 32, became the general manger of Fashion Queen six years ago when he was given the keys to the family business. “My father’s been in manufacturing in New York since I was born in the late ’80s in Chinatown,” Huang said the week before his first presentation at New York Fashion Week Men’s
“But everything fashion-related went overseas
so right now we’re doing military contracts
I’ve always liked fashion though and have wanted to do something on my own.”
Huang attended the Parsons MFA showcase out of curiosity with a friend and there he met Landlord’s creative director
Kawanishi presented a dress that was made out of a military-style backpack
and Huang knew he had found an ideal partner
Kawanishi graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2011 and got a scholarship through Uniqlo to study at Parsons in 2013
“I used to not really make wearable pieces; I was more into avant-garde as a student,” he said
I tried to find a way to survive off of my creative side
and totally didn’t think about the business side at all
After one season working out the logistical kinks together
they were finally ready to present their label to a mass audience
The name “Landlord” made sense for the pair not only because Huang is literally the landlord of the factory
but also because Kawanishi is inspired by readymades and everyday work uniforms
His thesis collection was named after Marcel Duchamp’s “The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors
Even” and he looked to Isa Genzken’s uniformed mannequins for spring 2017
which he showed on Thursday at Skylight Clarkson
I tried to apply more American influences,” said Kawanishi
and after I moved here I realized America is more casual
I really enjoyed researching the idea of casual sportswear
American military uniforms are turned into Japanese streetwear.”
The result for Landlord Spring 2017 is “fashion queen” meets military

the architects created a hidden calm courtyard in hibarigaoka-harnayashiki
a district consisting of old mansions which don’t allow any privacy for the inhabitants.

keeping the pre-existing low fence, nLDK designed a thick high wall encircling the house as well, thus the small private house fits into the district of big mansions
so the courtyard can be wider to host some settings for the kids and a resting area
the interior design is maintained in the neat japanese minimalistic style with traditional elements such as tatami mats and sliding doors. many openings in the walls and roof let the light come insight and brighten the whole space. while seeming completely monolithic and secured from outside
the house is open from inside: all the parts are connected to the yard
so there’s no clear boundary between interior and exterior while the windows are open

TOKYO -- The electric-vehicle joint venture between Sony Group and Honda Motor will not be a "one and done" deal, President and Chief Operating Officer Izumi Kawanishi told Nikkei, outlining plans to offer multiple models after it begins sales in 2025 to better compete with the likes of Tesla.
In addition to his posts at Sony Honda Mobility, Kawanishi is an executive vice president at Sony Group and led the development of its Vision-S prototype EV. "We will bring our expertise and know-how together with Honda's as we consider what mobility should look like," he said of the venture's vehicles.

he struck on the dress codes of yet another subculture—or three
“At first I chose skate and surf as the fundamental silhouettes,” Kawanishi explained backstage
Then a message arrived from the Cartoon Network
proposing a collaboration with the wildly beloved show Adventure Time
which will conclude this year after eight seasons
“So I twisted that idea to Net surfing,” he said
Three style references may sound like a lot to cohere into one collection (four
if you count the military details that grounded the offering)
much of the distinctions between them were lost in the clothes
however—Kawanishi’s intent was to more generally wax on his ’90s childhood
He pored over old photographs of the surfers and skaters of California whom he admired at the time—through his computer screen
“It’s what I saw when Windows 95 started,” he said
“That’s kind of my nostalgic ’90s idea.” (The collection is called Be Nice to Nerds
The utilitarian pants and jackets remained from previous seasons
but Kawanishi played with patching reflective stripes and matte tech cottons onto the nylon
Some of those patches and pockets overlapped slightly on pant legs or chest pockets—a nod to the cascading display of “windows” on a PC
as well as the little accidents that occur in Photoshop and Illustrator in the design process (“accidental deconstruction,” Kawanishi calls it)
His choice of colors stood out: the primary RGB (red
which provided a nice lift and tied into the tertiary animation theme
despite Kawanishi’s best efforts (perhaps he might want to tackle less next season)
it was certainly fun and sure to appeal to the show’s fans—a varsity jacket with Shmowzow
and an embroidered patch of BMO appliquéd to a screen-printed painting of peonies
The rest of the lineup is poised to do equally well: Dover Street Market has picked it up for its New York
internships – fulfilling their dreams to grow themselves as individuals
students who have challenged themselves speak about how they’ve changed and grown from enrollment to the present
I was a member of the Freshman Week committee to recruit new students
It was quite a task to improve the allocation of booths on the Main Street and in Building No
9 to make it easier to understand that there were sports clubs
and to coordinate Freshman Week after hearing from each group
and I realized the importance of communication
I think it was easier for them to speak up because I was a first-year student
Kawanishi: They wanted as many people to join as possible
and everyone was desperate to recruit members
Takahashi: We penalized groups that were absent without notice from the explanatory meeting or did not meet deadlines for submissions
so that we could give them a proper explanation
The fact that you must talk to people in order to get to know them was something I took as a lesson from this committee and in the rugby club I belong to.
Kawanishi: I am the representative of the Future Center Project
one of the “faculty-teacher collaborative innovations” that faculty members and staff are working on to improve the university
I was involved in the renovation of Building No
I also plan various events such as “U-Talk” events
Takahashi: I did not know about that project
The lighting was different from other cafeterias
Kawanishi: Originally it was dark and unattractive
alumni and experts to make it a wonderful place for everyone to gather
What we emphasized at that time was to have people give their opinions responsibly on a face-to-face basis
We had to make sure that the voices of the silent majority were heard
I also tried to talk with various members of the team
I think I was very conscious of the practice menu and tactics to find a landing point that everyone could agree on
Kawanishi: Even if it is not the tactic you want
once you win a game with a tactic that the team agrees with
so I tried not to intimidate the junior members who were beginners
I was very grateful for the fact that they would sometimes give me opinions that cut to the essence of what I was thinking
which helped me to look at my own ideas objectively
Kawanishi: There are all kinds of bosses in a company
but those who talk frankly are trusted by those below them
what do you think are the unique strengths of an economics student
Takahashi: Even if it is a humanities major
I’m confident in my ability to handle things mathematically
Although the department is strong in mathematics
we are increasing the number of English subjects as most of the students are not very good at it
they tell me that they should have studied English more
so I struggled a lot in my first and second year classes
Kawanishi: I think being able to do mathematics is what makes the Department of Economics unique
but if you can speak English you will have more opportunities
I applied to a series of finance jobs in order to put what I had studied to use
I was aware that when you build a facility
you need to communicate with various people
and proceed in a way that maximizes everyone’s interests
So I thought the “Future Center Project” you mentioned earlier was very interesting
Kawanishi: It’s easy to fall into the trap of “thinking you have communicated” something
so it’s important to try to understand the other person’s point of view and mutually communicate
Your story about the Freshman Week could have caused trouble in some cases but
with regard to people who are upset that they are not being treated well
I hope that you will continue to create a dialogue and politely convey your feelings in talking with each other
I practiced self-disclosure and tried to understand the other person and bring out ’their story while showing my own vulnerability
As the president of the company that offered me a job has suggested
I would like to gain more depth as a human being and broaden myself in the future
If the other party feels that I am someone they would like to talk to
the number of contacts and the total volume of dialogue will increase
Communication with care for others offers hints for mapping your future
Professor Kawanishi of the Faculty of Economics specializes in behavioral economics
and studies ways of improving economies based on the psychology and behavior of humans
He talks about how psychology affects the way people work
and the relationship between people that make up communities and the economy
Governments roll out economic policies to trigger demand and kickstart the flailing economy
but things do not always go as planned—this is because the economy is driven by humans
The field of behavioral economics that I specialize in explores the underlying relationships between the psychology of people and the economy
The thing that first triggered my interest in behavioral economics was when I encountered Robert Shiller’s research into stock market bubbles and the psychology of investors
for which he was later awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences
I was in junior high and high school during the Japanese economic bubble
and while Japan was enjoying the fruits of this bubble
I began to notice unusual trends occurring throughout society from the way my father had to work so much
My interest in society and the economy at the time forms the roots of my current research efforts
a measure of output per worker or per hour
is amongst the lowest of leading countries in the world—this is one of the reasons why the Japanese economy has not managed to pick up again after the bubble popped
The reasons that determine the level of labor productivity
when viewed from the stance of ordinary economics
include lower fundamental academic skills and lack of motivation amongst workers to improve their abilities; the challenge that the Japanese economy faces is identifying just how to change these key causes
I began focusing on the idea of “perseverance” that has become a new approach in the field of psychology
perseverance is a common trait amongst the greats; but this ability is not something people are born with
American psychologists have discovered that this ability can be acquired later in life
and that there are differences in the mindsets—or the way people tend to think about things around them—between those able to acquire this skill and those who cannot
people with a fixed mindset believe that abilities are something that one is born with and remain the same
while people with a growth mindset believe that abilities are something that one can develop
Psychological experiments revealed that those with a fixed mindset usually give up quickly and tend to have a low self-esteem
whereas those with a growth mindset are more likely to confront any challenge they face and build on their skills accordingly
the reason why the economy fails to pick up becomes clear—the economy will remain lackluster if no one is willing to take on the challenge of starting new businesses
The number of young entrepreneurs in Japan is still much lower than other countries
and while there may be many people who have a novel idea
the majority of them are likely reluctant to make the first move
or think there would be no second chance if they fail once
I personally feel that in order to change this type of mindset
it will be vital to create a society that makes it easier to take on new challenges
Japan has one of the highest rates of socially isolated individuals amongst OECD countries
Research in the US has revealed that economic activity is greater and business is better in regions where people have strong ties and positive relationships of trust with others in the same community
another field of research that I am involved in is working for incorporated non-profit organizations to help prevent isolation and to build better communities
“Making Japanese society more positive” is the sole purpose of my studies
and I also want to give the younger people in Japan—tomorrow’s leaders—a sense of courage and hope
I would like to see the knowledge I impart through my research and lectures reach as many people as possible
“Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” (Mindset [Yarebadekiru] no kenkyū) by Carol S
Dweck; Japanese translation byYasuko Imanishi
A book on positive psychology based on 20 years of research proving that skills and ability are not something we are born with

but also a way to view yourself objectively

The Knot- Nexus of Knowledge by Sophia Professors
Exploring links between human psychology and economics—finding how to revitalize Japan
it became clear that the days of the dominant role of the huge Naval fleets of Destroyers and Battleships were numbered
and aircraft plus their carriers were about to take over their role as a new weapon
being more flexible in Naval Battles with way more speed
and more reach and punch with massive torpedo- bomber attacks and fighters
a number of Naval aircraft/ Flying Boats were specifically designed for ultra-long Patrol flights over open oceans
demanding for a new sort of aircraft platform that could carry sufficient amounts of fuel for the long haul
and the Americans were working on such designs as they
with their Imperial ambitions and/or oceans surrounding them
felt the most urgent need in case of a war
I will try to make a comparison between what arguably is considered as The best of WWII-operated US and Japanese Flying Boats:
as the newly upgraded Radial engines from Pratt & Whitney and Wright arrived into the market with previously unseen HP/weight ratios
reducing the need for use of 3-4 engine setups (Similar to what we see now with the upgraded/ stretched 2-engine Wide Body Jet-airliners
pushing the 4-engine B-747/ A-380 Jetliners out of the market for pax flights)
The P & W R-1830 Twin Wasp 14 cylinder Radial engine cranked out some 1,000 hp and in later versions even 1,200 hp with extreme endurance and reliability
The engines could run/fly for well over 30 hours if only sufficient fuel was aboard
For the planned long overseas Flying Boat patrol and civil aircraft
that flight endurance/range became the new Holy Grail
monitoring the endless seas with almost unlimited flight endurance and hopefully detecting one day the enemy fleet or a single Submarine
way before those vessels could launch an attack and inflict damage
Kawanishi incorporated in their design the knowledge collected after they visited the Short Brothers factory in the UK
at that time one of the world’s leading producers of flying boats (Industrial espionage is nothing new)
enlarged version of Short’s Old-School design
4-engine monoplane with twin tails came out
and a hull suspended beneath the parasol wing by struts
quite closely resembling the PBY wing setup
The maiden flight was on 14 July 1936 (just over a year after the maiden flight of the PBY) and was originally designated Navy Type 97 Flying Boat
a newly developed large-sized flying boat came out
four-engine aircraft designed for long-range and extended endurance on patrols or bombing missions typically flown alone over the ocean
and used by the Imperial Japanese Navy in some very audacious assaults
it was a shoulder-winged design that has some distinct similarities with the Short Sunderland design: a robust flying boat that was also fitted with powerful defensive armament
wherever this aircraft was encountered in the Pacific theater
The H8K entered production in 1941 and first saw operational use on the night of 4 March 1942
Only 3 months after the first surprise attack on Pearl Harbor
the Japanese launched a daring second raid on the Oahu
Since the target laid out of range for the flying boats
this audacious plan involved a refueling by submarine at the abandoned French Frigate Shoals
Two Emilys attempted to bomb Pearl Harbor and believe it or not
Six days after this second Pearl Harbor raid
As if a Tokyo-Hawaii Express scheduled-flight slot was agreed upon
one of the Emilys was again sent out on a daylight photo-reconnaissance mission from the Midway Atoll
It was intercepted by radar-directed Brewster F2A Buffalo fighters of Marine Fighting Squadron 221 and shot down
the lead pilot of the second Pearl Harbor raid
But the string of events as described with the “Emily”
gives an impression of how this aircraft was underestimated by the Allies
It turned out that also the Japanese had made major steps forward
With a length of 28 m/ 92 ft and a wingspan of 38 m/ 124 ft
the ‘Emily’ was markedly larger than the PBY
its Gross Weight of 24,5 tons/ 34,000 lbs and take-off weight of 32,5 tons/ 72,000 lbs indicate that this aircraft was made for the long haul
its 4 Mitsubishi radial engines cranked out max 1,859 hp each
resulting in a high top speed of 467 km/h/ Cruise speed of 300 km/h (184 mph)
the flight range was fabulous and the aircraft’s endurance made her the champion of the long overseas patrol flights
needed over the Atlantic Ocean from early 1940 and over the Pacific Ocean from December 1941
Soon engaged in Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and in SAR flights (Search and Rescue) for tracking downed pilots
the Catalina had the capacity to fill the ship-convoy escort-gap over the Atlantic
as PBY flights were performed both from the UK and Canada

the Catalina got big fangs for killing the Subs
the Cats were among the first fighting aircraft that received Radar
so they were able to attack the Subs also at night
