WATCHVIDEO: Bus driver keeps control after being hit by flying metal on I-405 in Bellevueby Jeremy Harris
BELLEVUE, Wash. — A Northshore School District bus driver has returned to his job less than a week after being struck by a piece of metal that flew through the windshield of his bus on a highway in Bellevue
The metal bar hit Stewart O'Leary in the chest while he was taking a group of high school girl basketball players from North Creek High School to a game on Friday afternoon
it was violent," O'Leary told KOMO News
so I got the idea something came through the windshield and hit me
Video of the incident released by the school district shows the metal bar flying through the windshield and striking O'Leary in the chest
Two coaches who were on the bus ran to the front and assisted O'Leary in slowing the bus to the shoulder without hitting any cars and then calling 911
and not any of the passengers," he said
O'Leary was taken to the hospital and treated for a serious bruise to the chest
in fractions of a second things can change," he said
At the district's bus office in Bothell
the shattered glass windshield has been put up for display as co-workers leave notes showing their appreciation and pride for O'Leary's effort
he’s an absolute hero," said Tammy Ayers with the Teamsters 763
and to have something come through the windshield and to have cars on both sides of you – we are just so proud of him
Washington State Patrol troopers told KOMO News they have not been able to determine where the piece of metal originated
O'Leary was able to keep the piece of metal as a reminder of the close call
"That’s what the job of a bus driver is - transporting students safely - and I did that
I’m pretty happy none of them got hurt."
Komono and Belgian designer Igor Dieryck have collaborated on their second collection
which is a limited edition range of eyewear
black and silver – the sunglass is said to offer a bold
the oversized silhouette bulges around the polarised lenses and a thin brow line sweeps down into a thicker rim
Details include a small cutout on the bridge that contrasts the size of the rounded frame
Komono said the unique shape was inspired by the post-party haze and mirrored the dark circles created after a long night out as a student

Mie Prefecture--Pianos from the time of Beethoven and Mozart form part of a collection here that was lovingly put together by a piano tuner who is now retired
They do not sound anything like a grand piano of modern times
as visitors notice when they first step through the door of the Komono Piano History Museum
One of the showpieces at the facility is a dulcimer whose many strings are struck by handheld “hammers.”
features strings that are plucked with plectra made of bird quill
This type of instrument was a favorite of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Another early type of piano on show is a clavichord
whose sounds are produced by striking strings with metal blades
These early models led to the invention of the grand piano
whose strings are struck by felt-coated wooden hammers to create sounds
The word “piano” is a shortened form of the Italian “pianoforte,” signifying that the instrument can produce both soft (piano) and loud (forte) melodies
The Komono Piano History Museum has 37 instruments on show
The collection was amassed by 83-year-old Mitsuyoshi Iwata during business trips to Europe and the United States
The retired piano tuner now holds the title of representative director at the museum
Sixty or so instruments from his collection were originally on show at a training center of the Chubu Piano Choritsu Senmongakko (Chubu piano tuning academy)
a school that Iwata established in Nagoya in 1980
The school is current Chubu Technical Academy of Musical Instruments
The instruments were intended for educational use
Loathe to leave the instruments to gather dust
a group of volunteer tuners close to Iwata spent a year restoring 20 of them
the center reopened as the Komono Piano History Museum
staff pay special attention to reproducing
the bodywork and internal workings are examined carefully so that strings and other components can be imported from Europe
Difficult-to-procure parts are crafted manually on occasion
“We do not mess around with the original designs,” Iwata said
“We also ensure that the materials we use are as close as possible to those from the periods in which they were created.”
As audio recording technology had not been invented when Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) was alive
no recordings exist of his works as originally composed
“This is why it is so important to protect not only the design of the instruments but also their original sounds,” Iwata said
A typical contemporary piano has 88 keys that span seven and a half octaves
The steel strings are stretched tightly over the instrument’s frame to produce powerful
resonant sounds even when played with an orchestra in a huge concert hall
A less refined piano from Mozart’s time covered five octaves with 61 keys
The piano underwent significant improvements in Ludwig van Beethoven’s most active period
It is said that the German composer who died in 1827 aged 56 relied on different types of pianos at different times in his life
“Changes in the instrument’s design are reflected in his scores
as the piano continued to evolve through his final years,” Iwata said
By the time Chopin was making a name for himself
the piano had expanded to more than six and a half octaves to boast around 80 keys
The introduction of a metal frame to allow for greater string tension enhanced both the instrument’s tonal power and elegance
Visitors to the Komono Piano History Museum are assured of hearing the distinct sounds of various pianos
including those from renowned instrument makers Broadwood & Sons
They are all available to play--the very same models once cherished by Beethoven
Piano enthusiasts from all over Japan visit the Komono Piano History Museum to sample the sounds cherished by composers who left their mark on history
There is a growing movement in the world of classical music to reproduce the original sound of early compositions by using pianos from the period in which the pieces were written
the facility is inundated with people visiting for research purposes
Due to the difficulties in tuning the antique pianos
the Komono Piano History Museum generally opens only three times a week
The remaining days are reserved for repairs and adjustments
Materials for maintenance are funded through admission fees
donations from individuals and contributions from six sponsor companies
as well as membership fees from 500 project supporters
“Quaint pianos not only enable people to appreciate the charm of history but they also deepen their understanding and interpretation of musical scores,” Iwata said
“We will continue striving to pass down both the instruments and their unique sounds as well as the techniques to preserve them.”

Finding watches that appeal to affluent clients is relatively easy—Switzerland’s centuries-old watch industry makes sure of that
But younger and less well-heeled consumers crave quality design in their timepieces
stylish watches under $1,000—fills the gap beautifully (though where are its competitors in this price range?)
But a $600 watch may still be out of reach for entry-level buyers
or fashion followers who want to buy watches like stud earrings—in multiples and in various styles
Consider these five watch brands when filling out the low-price end of your watch inventory
Each offers analog styles that are cheap and undeniably chic
The Horse
Australian watch and accessories brand The Horse was founded in 2009 as a shoe label. But in 2013 the company launched its The Original collection of watches, and the minimalist, wear-with-everything watches have come to define the brand. The eyewear brand launches a collection designed by the Congolese music artist
Komono has launched a capsule eyewear collection curated by Congolese music artist
to celebrate the launch of his new music video
The capsule collection combines the unique
forward-thinking style that Baloji is known for with the craftsmanship of Komono to create fashionable high-quality eyewear
The collection is inspired by the style of historic figures and icons on the Congolese music scene
The styles in the collection include the over-sized ‘Kitoko’ frame
which is inspired by 80s hip-hop style and glasses worn by the Belgian King
who was nicknamed ‘Mwana Kitoko’ meaning ‘handsome young man’ in Lingala
The ‘Dizzy’ frame is inspired by the style of legendary Congolese guitarist
‘Dizzy’ who has been an icon in the Congolese music scene over the past five decades and a mentor to Baloji
The ‘Tshala’ frame which features feminine gold rims was inspired by Tshala Muana
who is described by Komono as “a living legend,” famous for her fast disco rhythms and dance choreography
‘Mujinga’ is a tribute to Baloji’s mother and has a cat’s eye shape that is inspired by her big almond-shape eyes that enabled him to recognise her amidst the crowds in Lubumbashi market when they met for the first time after 25 years
He merges African music with French traditions and Afro-American beats with electronic music from the Belgium region where he grew up
The eyewear company described the partnership as a “great expression of musical genius and high-fashion style.”
A spokesperson from Komono said: “Critically acclaimed for his modern interpretation of Congolese music
Baloji infuses his savvy and modern style into four unique styles
each a tribute to the people that influenced him most.”

At face value, the world of watches is dominated by a handful of companies. The banner brands are household names; Rolex is nestled alongside Lexus and Hyundai in Forbes’ list of the world’s most popular
and even people who tell the time on their phone know James Bond wears Omega
But with recognition comes spiralling price tags. Yes, Swiss luxury brands are built on exemplary engineering
but you’re also paying through the nose to have a logo embossed on the dial
Looking further afield at underground or hipster watches means you can find timepieces with less of a markup
and are less likely to feature on your friends’ wrists
It’s time to get in the know with the 10 best hipster watch brands you can wear today
Here’s our quick take when it comes to hipster watches
This Japanese watch brand is largely responsible for Swiss watchmaking’s late-century decline
after its quartz watches flooded (and nearly drowned) a market still focused on mechanicals
The brand remains tech-focused; it was responsible for the world’s first solar-powered GPS timepiece as well as a dual-time watch that’s kept accurate in twin time zones by overhead satellites
Traditionalists should look to its sibling Grand Seiko
It builds second-to-none automatic watches from in-house movements and
since it’s only been available outside Japan since 2011
is ideal for those who steer against the crowd
Detroit’s tragic decline from industrial powerhouse to ghost city in the last three decades has been harrowing for its residents
But from the ashes comes a glint of manufacturing light
which are made by workers who lost their jobs when the automotive industry died
but has since branched out into bikes and leather goods
Think traditional pieces with a strong ‘Made in the USA’ focus (albeit with Swiss guts) and this is what you get
Picture Scandinavian design and the mind steers towards minimalism and affordability
Stockholm’s Triwa bucks the former with an enormous array of hipster watches that run the gamut from white-faced two-handers to blingy gold-plated chronographs
heed to the latter with steel bracelet designs falling around £150
We’re particularly fond of the brand’s eye-catching leather straps
which let you switch up your look affordably
and will age with wear to give your wrist some personality
but you don’t need to drop huge sums to make a horological statement
By thinking outside the big brands you can get more for your money
Take AVI-8; the watch brand produces aviation inspired timepieces with meticulous attention to detail and eye-catching designs
With six strong collections, a plethora of accessories and new arrivals available online, it’s the easiest way to build a watch wardrobe in a hurry
Skagen takes its name from Denmark’s northernmost town
which juts into the North Sea at the tip of a narrow peninsula
The brand’s designs are obviously Scandinavian – think clean faces and brushed metals – but also slightly fashion-led
Each year you’ll find all the big Baselworld trends in the label’s collection
from titanium cases and mesh straps to blue faces and black
Skagen offers a pocket-friendly way to dip into on-point styles of hipster watches
Despite a storied history that stretches back over 150 years and includes work with Bauhaus legend Max Bill, Germany’s biggest watchmaker often gets little look-in on these shores
Well more fool us, as it produces minimalist automatics at competitive prices – making them ideal for the guy looking to buy his first ‘proper’ watch
And due to aesthetics that have barely changed in the last 50 years
you can be sure any investment will still look as sharp when you decide to enlarge your collection
The brainchild of 22-year-old college dropouts Jake Kassan and Kramer LaPlante
MVMT (pronounced ‘movement’) started life on crowdfunding platform Indiegogo in 2013
Thanks to sleek, fuss-free timepieces made as affordable as possible
the hipster watch brand smashed its target by almost 1,500 per cent and quickly established itself as one of the world’s fastest-growing names in horology
Today that takes the form of watches built from the same high-end materials as the mid-hundreds brands
Youthful Belgian brand Komono produces good-looking sunglasses as well as hipster watches
with its product range linked by a focus on classic designs crafted from quality materials (without the accompanying price tags)
The brand’s wristwear is known for its eye-catching colours
from all-scarlet cases and dials through to subtler white faces on statement straps
Buying into a Komono design is the easy way to add a pop of interest to an outfit
at prices that definitely won’t break the bank
Danish firm Georg Jensen also makes handsome watches powered by Swiss automatic movements
Its timepieces are as unadorned as you can get; delicate hands set against white dials
broken up in some designs with a tiny date window or power reserve
The brand’s watches are best paired with a roll neck
thick-rimmed glasses and the corner office at a leading architecture firm
Customisable watches are nothing new – after all
switching up your strap is the easiest way to keep a timepiece fresh
but Objest takes that idea to a whole new level
Designed in London in conjunction with world-class Swiss watchmakers
customers can tailor nearly every visible feature including the dial
Add to that subtle details like a hatch pattern dial that doubles up as a marker for the hours and you’ve got the design lover’s watch of choice

Esquire Middle East – The Region’s Best Men’s Magazine
Home | Style | 10 watches that look more expensive than they are
watches are one of the few truly universal accessories in menswear
And they alone can shift the feeling of any outfit
If you’re in the market for something that looks sophisticated—but without the budget to support a truly pricey take—there are enough simple
affordable watches that can keep you on point
Look for a streamlined face and strap if you’re elevating your day-to-day look
But this Leonard & Church take is only 7mm thick
In case you’re wondering: That’s impressive
Understated black and white is all you need for something refined
Never underestimate the power of a good band
When it comes to making something look more expensive than it actually is
This Skagen watch is minimalism done very well
The gray leather strap is complemented by the pale gray face—something unexpected for those accustomed to white or navy
An all-black watch is an easy way to elevate the look of a moderately priced option
Monochrome is just inherently more sophisticated
The streamlined look and easy shape makes this one work for dressed-up situations—but won’t push you out of place in a casual one
You know how no one ever knows what to wear for something “business casual?” Here is your answer
Subscribe to our newsletter now and you will be
we’ll give you Esquire’s A-to-Z of Men’s Fashion for FREE

As celebrations for Girl’s Day on March 3 drew to a close
you might be guessing that a celebration for male children wouldn’t be far behind
the 5th day of the 5th month marks Kodomo no Hi — Children’s Day — more commonly known as the holiday to wish for the good health of young boys
all over Japan you will see places decorated with flag-like images of colorful carps — koinobori — flapping in the spring air
The imagery is associated with a legend of carps which has it that these fish are particularly strong
swimming their way upstream until they become transformed into a dragon
you can admire the decorations beginning in April at Tokyo Tower
the tower presents 333 carps flying in the wind
one for each meter in height of the landmark
adding a local touch to an image so closely associated with spring in Japan
the koinobori decorations tend to be relatively small and manageable in size
In a small studio called Takagi in Sakai City in Osaka Prefecture
the workshop is preparing for the Kodomo no Hi celebration in May
The carp streamers here are produced in large numbers — the shop has produced approximately 600 hand painted koinobori since June 2018
But the key is the size: they vary from 25 cm to 6.3 meters in length
whose family has been running the shop since the Meiji Period
explained the concept: “We want to continue creating
art which is unique to Japan and which wishes for the wellbeing of children.”
There is no sign of letup in the success of the business
Takada has also been getting orders from abroad
This year’s Children’s Day is set to fall at the end of a 10-day Golden Week
It is a particularly long celebration for a holiday
made longer this year in honor of the Emperor’s abdication and the start of the new imperial era
If you happen to be in Japan during that time
why not try to get a glimpse of the festivities

We absolutely adore modern art and wish that we could cover our walls with exquisite canvases. Sadly, it’s just not in our budget. When we learned that the street fashion accessories brand Komono had collaborated with the estate of one of our fave artists, Jean-Michel Basquiat
and were launching an exclusive capsule collection of watches
It was our chance to own and wear a piece of art history significance – at an affordable price to boot
Jean-Michel Basquiat is one of the most illustrious artists of his generation and is widely considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century
and through a bold sense of colour and composition he maintains a fine balance between seemingly contradictory forces such as control and spontaneity
Inspired by Basquiat’s blatant disregard for the traditional boundaries between artistic mediums
this collection of wrist candy spans the gap between accessories and high art
Each of the six timepieces boasts a unique printed fabric wristband depicting a different detail of one of these famous Basquiat paintings: Pegasus (1987); Tenor (1985); Philistines (1982); Museum Security (1983); Return of the Central Figure (1983); and Untitled (1984)
We like the fact that no two watches are the same
This is a limited-edition collection so don’t dawdle in picking up your own piece of Basquiat memorabilia
The Komono x Jean-Michel Basquiat collection is available exclusively at Still Life in Vancouver
Each watch is available in three different sizes: The Wizard for $95; The Winston for $105; and The Magnus for $120
Will you be donning one of these exclusive watches? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @ViewTheVibe.
