Situated at the north end of Honshu and a 2-hour drive from Misawa Air Base, Kuroishi City is home to impressive streets filled in traditional wooden arcades and local craft art museums. The area also offers lush forests and a wonderful view of Mt. Hakkoda.
Originally developed as a castle town, Nakamachi Komise District in the city center is known for its impressive wood-covered shopping arcades constructed to shelter visitors from snow in the winter and strong sunshine in the summer. Drop by Tsugaru Komise Station, a shop featuring local sweets and wooden products, as the shop offers complimentary live Tsugaru-shamisen performances.
A bit off from the city center, Tsugaru Kokeshi Doll Museum, housed in a merchant house built about 200 years ago, displays countless Kokeshi dolls, charming wooden folk craft dolls widely produced in the Tohoku (northeastern) region of Japan. The dolls have a simple form of body and head and are often offered as a souvenir at hot spring resorts throughout the region.
“With a reservation, you can participate in a class to paint and decorate a doll yourself,” says Yoshihito Morita, who works at Misawa Air Base Commissary and recently visited Kuroishi City.
Near the doll museum, Tsugaru Traditional Craft Center offers exhibits featuring local traditional kimono, various farming tools and household items. You can enjoy listening to musicians playing local folk music on Tsugaru-shamisen (local banjo-like string instrument) in the hall of the building.
Besides the impressive street and museums, Kuroishi has a pristine onsen hot spring and superb sake breweries. And Mount Nakano Nomijiyama near these museums is known as a great place to view autumn leaves. The mountain will soon be filled with gorgeous bright hues of yellow and crimson colors, so what are you waiting for?

As thousands visit and enjoy the District’s Cherry Blossom Festival
it is also marking the 110th anniversary of Japan’s gift to the United States that started the tradition
The famed cherry blossom trees were a gift from the mayor of Tokyo in 1912
Japan called them a “memorial of friendship” between the two countries
Japan’s Embassy Spokesman Ryo Kuroishi says the friendship between the two countries remains strong
“I’m sure it will last another 110 years.” Kuroishi said
“We are excited to celebrate the anniversary.”
kick off many celebrations in that country
The Japanese mark the arrival of spring and the blossoms with special gatherings called hanami near the cherry trees
The tradition is at least one thousand years old
“We can see cherry blossom trees in many places all around the world
It is very similar to that of Japan,” Kuroishi said
people are enjoying cherry blossom trees like we do in Japan.”
Japan gave more than 3,000 Yoshino cherry trees to the U.S.
which have a life span of between 50 and 60 years
with the expert help arborists over the years
the District’s renowned trees have doubled that life expectancy
who have taken care of these cherry trees so carefully,” Kuroishi said
“That’s why they’ve lasted for 110 years.”
D.C.’s official Cherry Blossom Festival was forced to go online due to the coronavirus pandemic
the popular outdoor festival was reopened to the public

A two-hour drive west from Misawa AB gets you to Kuroishi
an attractive city that is home to impressive streets filled in traditional wooden arcades
an abundance of pristine hot springs and a local craft art museum
I was able to visit and explore some of the things that make the city a great destination for tourists
I began my trip to Kuroishi by visiting Aoni Onsen hot spring
After seeing a small handmade sign along Lake Nijinoko on Route 102 indicating the direction to the hot spring
winding road that took me on four miles of bumpy
sometimes unpaved roads before I reached the hot spring
Although mobile phones and GPS systems didn’t work
signboards were installed every quarter mile to help get me to my destination
Just as the nickname “Inn of Lamps” indicates
the hot spring relies solely on light produced from its lamps
the only sounds to be heard were that of streams
After paying the 540 yen ($5.00) admission
I began touring the hot spring resort made up of wooden lodges
shacks and five baths located in and outside of the buildings
As it was still morning and there were only a couple of other bathers
I was able to take my time and enjoyed hopping baths from confined indoor wooden bathes to large open-air rock bathes with views of waterfalls and river streams
A few hours of daytime bathing in the pristine forest left me feeling refreshed and energized
hoping to come back one day during the winter to check out fantastic night view with the lamps and snow
Location: 1-7 Takinoue Aonisawa Okiura Kuroishi Admission: 540 yen Tel: 0172-54-8588
Having returned to the main road along the Lake Nijinoko
I then visited a local wooden doll museum as I made my way to central Kuroishi City
Housed in a merchant house built about 200 years ago
Tsugaru Kokeshi-kan Museum displayed countless Kokeshi dolls
charming wooden folk craft dolls widely produced in Tohoku (northeastern) region of Japan
The dolls have a simple form of body and head
and are often used as a souvenir at hot spring resorts throughout the region
The exhibit told the interesting history of folk dolls
pattern and style depending on the district
you can participate in a class to paint and decorate a doll yourself
Admission: 320 yen ($2.90) Tel: 0172-54-8181
About a 15-minute drive from the doll museum was the center of Kuroishi City
Because the city was originally developed as a castle town
there are many old traditional buildings still standing
which is known for its impressive old wooden arcades
The wooden arcades were built off the roofs of buildings to shelter pedestrians from snow in the winter and strong sunshine during summer
The street was nominated as one of the 100 most attractive streets in Japan
and has been preserved as Important Cultural Property of Japan
I began my street walk by picking up some tourist information at “Matsu-no-yu” community center
The community center building was used as a public bath house
and it offers tourists a glimpse of the bath culture of Japan
The building was very unique as a 350-year-old pine tree standing next to the building protruded from the roof
Nakamura Kamekichi Shuzo and Narumi Jozoten
I entered the shop building to check out the interior made up of vaulted ceilings and tatami rooms built on a raised-floor
Aomori Prefecture accommodates numerous excellent sake breweries
these two breweries are considered two of the best for their full-bodied
The sound of a Tsugaru-shamisen (local banjo-like string instrument) caught my attention on the street
and lured me to the Tsugaru Kuroishi Komise Eki
a shop featuring local sweets and wooden products
The shop offers a complimentary live Tsugaru-shamisen performance in the city that started “Tsugaru Jongara” folk music
I was able to enjoy the afternoon performance
but they do perform twice every day at 11 a.m
The passionate performance and magnificent technique reminded me of flamenco music played by a skilled Spanish guitarist
Tasty tsuyu yakisoba in a traditional storage house
I ended my stroll in the traditional district by dropping by a Japanese restaurant for a late lunch
housed in traditional building built nearly 200 years ago
is a popular eatery offering a variety of local dishes
I ordered tsuyu yakisoba (fried noodles with broth) for 800 yen (+tax
This noodle dish was created by Kuraishi residents and is known as popular local dish
The dish featured thick and chewy noodles along with shrimp and mushroom tempura in soy-sauce based broth
The then perfect the dish by putting some Worcestershire sauce on top
A staffer recommended sampling the noodles with broth before mixing in the Worcestershire sauce so I could enjoy the changing taste of the broth
I was impressed with the taste of broth as it gradually got thicker and more bitter which made the flavor of shrimp and mushroom tempura stand out
The chewy texture of thick noodles went along well with the broth
Driving along mountain roads back to Misawa AB was very invigorating
as the roads gave me a majestic view of Mount Hakkoda and everything around it
My eyes were transfixed on the magnificent view of Mount Hakkoda capped in snow
bright green valley and gigantic Jyogakura Bridge
The 837-foot long and 400-foot high bridge is the nation’s longest arch bridge and a must-see attraction
Suirennuma Pond is another great spot to see Mount Hakkoda
I parked the car and enjoyed the panoramic vista of the mountain
crystal clear water and golden marsh on a pier
With birds chirping and lovable white skunk cabbage flowers alongside

a train with its interior painted entirely in shocking pink runs through a green pastoral landscape in the Tsugaru region
makes up to nine round trips a day between Hirosaki and Kuroishi stations on Konan Railway Co.’s Konan Line
The flashy train serves as a “time machine” to help passengers trace their memories
Words such as “Where were you born?” and “What is your memorable place?” are written on the floor alongside “November 1972.”
“There are spaces no other trains can offer,” said Takafumi Hara
“I hope each (passenger) gains access to their memories and remembers precious things.”

such as apple farming and “neputa” gigantic lantern floats
The interior of the second car of the two-car train was designed by nine students from the information design course at the prefecture-run Kuroishi High School

A tweet featuring a Japanese apple-shaped plush mascot banging on the drums has gone viral at the start of March
So far, the video of cult superstar Nyango Star playing the drums to the “Anpan March,” the theme from a popular children's television show
has been retweeted 91,000 times and has received 113,000 likes
Xの紅など激しい曲ばかりではなくて、ここで1曲お子さん向けの曲を…!と始まったアンパンマンのマーチですが、、、
段々激しくなっていく2番からの演奏をご覧下さい。 pic.twitter.com/MjL74UAaa2
— 綺 (@ak1225_062708) March 4, 2017
He doesn't just rock out to tunes like ‘Crimson’ (Kurenai, 紅) by X Japan
here's Nyango Star playing for the Anpan March for kids
The drumming just gets more and more intense
According to a comment on Reddit:
Please know that Nyango star is a yuru-chara mascot from Japan representing Aomori prefecture that's part of the Tohoku-region which was devastated by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in March 11th
anytime Nyango star makes public appearances it is to promote the region and help it recover from the tragedy
It isn't drumming for its personal gain but for its beloved home
Nyango Star gets its shape from the apples that have made Aomori famous in Japan. Apparently, the mascot is also part cat. Combine the sound a cat makes in Japanese (nyan) with the Japanese world for ‘apple’ (ringo), and you get the name Nyango. The Aomori mascot gets the rest of its name from famed Beatles drummer Ringo Starr
In this video, Nyango Star plays the drums in time with the “insanely difficult” song “Crimson” (Kurenai, 紅) by popular rock band X Japan at a university student culture in Aomori Prefecture
https://youtu.be/biny7bOwnOw
More of Nyango Star's drumming videos can be found on the official Nyango Star site, and on his Twitter, Instagram and YouTube pages. More explanation in English about Nyango Star can be found on Japanese pop culture blog Grapee

Universal Studios Japan announced Monday that it would be incorporating the Jujutsu Kaisen anime into not one
but two attractions at the theme park this year
The first is "Jujutsu Kaisen the Real 4-D." This 4D cinema experience (with all the usual wind in your face
and moving seats) will feature an entirely original animation that is about 20 minutes long
As prospective students for this new school
you are invited to the groundbreaking ceremony for the school building
the man claiming to be the principal of the Osaka branch
this new school will be established to train jujutsu sorcerers in order to save people from the ever-increasing number of curses that have been inflicted upon them in recent years
and Nobara have secretly infiltrated the ceremony..
But just as the ceremony begins with great pomp and circumstance
The second Jujutsu Kaisen-themed attraction is a retooling of the roller coaster “Hollywood Dream - The Ride” called “Jujutsu Kaisen X Hollywood Dream - The Ride ~Kaikai Kitan~.” This roller coaster features an inbuilt sound system that allows each individual rider to pick from a selection of songs to ride to. For the Jujutsu Kaisen collaboration, the anime's theme song, “Kaikai Kitan” by Eve
will be available for your listening enjoyment
“Jujutsu Kaisen the Real 4-D” is scheduled to run from September 16

Fashion schools in Japan can be said to have created the history of fashion in the country
if there is anything wrong with the direction Japanese fashion is heading
these schools could be to blame for the way they teach the subject
quite a few Japanese have studied at and graduated with first-class honors degrees from
prestigious overseas fashion schools like the Central Saint Martins in London and the fashion department of Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in Belgium
Asked what the lectures are like at such institutes
the graduates say much time is spent teaching them how to establish their own concept and the methodology for expressing their thoughts and emotions in fashion
fashion education in Japan — with its roots in dressmaking techniques — is starkly different
I suspect fashion education in this country has focused too much on properly making clothes
carried the rankings of fashion industry people whom 1,732 fashion college students across the country most admire
It is interesting the question uses the phrase “the fashion industry figure you most admire.”
the chair and president of Uniqlo’s Fast Retailing Co.
showing the students’ deep support for Uniqlo
The rankings also show the students have respect
Support for fashion designers is still strong but not as overwhelming as in the past
there is no use getting angry and complaining that comedian Naomi Watanabe
model Rola and model Ai Tominaga made the list despite not being fashion industry people
it appears popularity on social media is not necessarily connected to product sales
and I have doubts if such popularity will last
My gut feeling says the 10-year survival rate of a fashion brand featuring a showbiz star is less than 5%
a so-called D2C (direct to consumer) brand

The company’s annual sales last year were ¥3.3 billion
e-commerce website design and writing entries for the brand’s blog and social media
Her competence had been much talked about in the fashion industry by the time she became independent in 2014 and launched multi-brand shop Ameri Vintage
In addition to two standalone stores in Daikanyama in Tokyo
Ameri Vintage now has a shop inside the Shinjuku Lumine 2 fashion shopping complex in Tokyo and its first overseas outlet in Shanghai
Ameri Vintage is popular among celebrities as well
someone like Kuroishi is truly someone whom fashion college students should look up to
products sold at Ameri Vintage are a tad expensive for students
a dress for ¥17,600 and denim pants for ¥19,250
They also look somewhat too elegant for young people
I wonder if the students actually purchase them
Kuroishi is showing sharp business sense in launching the cosmetic brand Lowan as her next step
Will Ameri still be creating a buzz in 2024

D.C.’s cherry blossoms are expected to peak between March 22 and March 25 this year
superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks
made the announcement at a news conference Tuesday held on Maryland Avenue in Southwest
where throngs of visitors gather each year to admire the delicate pink blooms
This year’s National Cherry Blossom Festival will run March 20 to April 17 and is returning to in-person events after largely going virtual the last two years because of the pandemic
The four weeks of programming include the traditional opening ceremony and parade
Restaurants and hotels across the city will also be offering special blossom-themed packages
The 2022 festival marks the 110th anniversary of the gift of 3,000 cherry blossom trees from Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki to Washington
“I’m sure that when people gathered at the Tidal Basin in 1912 to plant the first tree
they had no idea what an impact their effort would make,” said Ryo Kuroishi
we can now see those cherry blossoms have become a lasting symbol of our special friendship that has grown between Japan and the United States.”
The embassy’s Japan Information and Culture Center will be among the venues hosting festival-related exhibitions throughout the city. Other events include:
As for seeing the trees up close, the best viewing times are typically four to seven days after peak bloom starts. And you don’t need to converge on the Tidal Basin to admire them. Clusters of trees can be found along the National Mall
“Whether you travel to see the blooms in person or enjoy the blossom experience online with the #BloomCam and other virtual resources
we hope you’ll join us in Washington’s grandest springtime tradition,” said Reinbold
The theme of this year’s festival is “Rediscover Spring,” which National Cherry Blossom Festival President and CEO Diana Mayhew said “symbolizes hope
a gesture of goodwill from Tokyo to Washington
serve as a reminder of the importance of unifying communities and sharing in the celebration of peace and international friendship,” Mayhew said
The trees are also a major economic engine for the city
drawing 1.5 million people over the four weeks of programming
is open,” Mayor Muriel Bowser declared at the news conference
“Whether you are a fifth-generation Washingtonian like me or a first-time visitor to our nation’s capital,” Bowser said
“I hope you will immerse yourself in the spectacular radiance of our beautiful and blossoming cherry trees and take advantage of all that our city has to offer.”

AOMORI--Two comfort food dishes from Aomori Prefecture were included in the fiscal 2023 edition of the “100-Year Food” list compiled by the Agency for Cultural Affairs
Created to pass down and promote Japan’s diverse food culture
the list recognizes local dishes that have been handed down through generations
It comprises three divisions: Tradition covers local cuisine popular since the Edo Period (1603-1867); Modern honors food culture developed in the Meiji and Taisho eras (1868-1926); and Future acknowledges food culture expected to last the next 100 years
Both “Towada barayaki” and “Kuroishi tsuyu-yakisoba” were selected in the Future division
The former is a dish cooked with ribs of beef and sliced onion and flavored with a salty-sweet sauce
the dish won the top award at the B-1 Grand Prix
an annual festival of local foods from across the country
stir-fried noodles flavored with Worcester sauce
It comes with toppings such as bits of deep-fried batter and chopped green onion
It is said to have originated at an eatery adjacent to a junior high school in Kuroishi in the decade starting in 1955
The latest additions brought the total number of Aomori dishes included in the list to four
following “Shimizumori-nanba isshozuke” (chili peppers marinated in rice malt) in fiscal 2021 and “Hachinohe senbei-jiru” (rice cracker soup) in fiscal 2022

The manga ran on Hashimoto's website from 2005 to 2013, and Tokuma Shoten eventually published seven volumes of the manga from January to June 2016
(The first two volumes shipped simultaneously in the first month.)
The Fantasia Festival in Montreal, Canada screened the film's world premiere in July 2018. HIDIVE started streaming the film on the U.S.
Sakamoto directed the film based on his original concept and script. He also personally produced the animation and music for the film. Few anime productions of more than 60 minutes have been produced by one person in the past. Film director and author Osamu Fukutani supervised production
The staff ran a successful crowdfunding campaign to help fund the anime on the Japanese crowdfunding platform Makuake. The project met its 2 million yen (about US$17,800) goal in March 2017. The staff then ran a successful Kickstarter campaign for an English translation and funds to screen the film at festivals
The campaign ran from September to October 2017
The film will get a prequel spinoff titled Amrita no Kyōen (The Feast of Amrita)
The story will center on a high school girl named Tamahi
who encounters strange creatures while navigating a gigantic apartment building

Aomori Prefecture is renowned both throughout Japan and parts of the world for its apples
You are probably aware of the “Fuji” apple
The Fuji apple is just one of Aomori’s many delicious apple varieties
when it comes to apples Aomori Prefecture’s Kuroishi City isn’t fooling around either
deep reds and energetic greens make for beautiful autumn scenery
you have an authentic Japanese countryside experience.
Aomori’s apples are probably a little different to the ones you get down the road at the local shop
no matter how you put it (no comparisons with oranges to be made here!) There is a large difference though
This thing is pretty close to the size of my head
The apples produced here are usually quite large in comparison to the apples typically found in Australia
is called “Sekai ichi” (which means world’s number one)
The average apple here is a bit smaller than this
I’ve eaten my fair share of apples during my time here
And I must say that the apples here won’t fall short of your expectations
the sweet and tangy Jonathan and countless other varieties
allowing hungry people enjoy apples depending on the flavour they’re craving
Even if you can’t make your way out to the orchards themselves
plenty of Aomori’s delicious apples are available at local supermarkets throughout Japan
as they’re naturally a popular choice.
you can pick and eat as many apples as you can
make sure your eyes aren’t bigger than your stomach
Just a few apples will fill you up faster than you’d think
The size does change the eating experience however
I’m used to eating my apples by holding them and biting into them
Apples are eaten a little differently in Japan
By being much larger than the kind of Apple you’d get in Australia
it’s a little trickier to bite right into them
Throughout Japan it’s normal to slice your apple up before eating it
Slicing into the apple also has another purpose: checking out the inside.
honey-like spots towards the centre of the apple
In English the term for this is called “watercore”
In many countries it’s considered a disorder and these apples are typically discarded of
this occurrence in the apple is known as “mitsu”
meaning honey or nectar is one thing that is desired in Japanese apples
Apples filled with mitsu are considered to be tastier and sweeter than regular apples
beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
The apples have plenty of culinary uses too
You have your standard sweet goodies like apple pies and apple juices
Apples are also used extensively in savoury dishes like curries and plenty of restaurant unique foods
One of my personal favourites is an apple tartar sauce that a local restaurant serves with some of their fried dishes
Apples really are the pride of much of Aomori
When they’re as part of your everyday life as much as they are here
it’s hard to not be even a little passionate about them
Maybe you’ll start to go apple crazy yourself

We arrived at Kuroishi Station in just under 40 minutes
The rotary in front of the station was buried in snow
In the Nakamachi district in the center of Kuroishi City
wooden arcades called 'komise' jut out in front of buildings
making it possible to move around without being bothered by snow
and sometimes mountains of cleared snow form in the gaps between the 'komise.'
We arrived at Restaurant Miyuki in the Nakamachi district. The location is just under 10 minutes walk from Kuroishi Station
I ordered the 'Black Stone Sauce Yakisoba,' which has been revived for the first time in 15 years
a piping hot bowl of yakisoba with soup was brought to us on a hot stone
it feels like 'a lot of soupy fried noodles.' Even if you make fried noodles with a lot of Worcestershire sauce
but it doesn't feel strange at all as a food
and the simmering sauce-flavored fried noodles warm you from the core
The meat soaked in the sauce tastes just like yakisoba
I don't usually make porridge with sauce
there is a restaurant called 'Sugo Shokudo' facing the front of Kuroishi Station that sells 'tsuyu yakisoba' and 'Kuroishi yakisoba sake' which is made to go well with tsuyu yakisoba
but it was closed at the time of this visit so I was unable to visit
Why Singapore became a rich country
It turns out that defecation before exercise has a surprising effect on cognitive function and athletic performance
