While George Lucas wore a lot of influences on his sleeves when he put together the first Star Wars trilogy, including Flash Gordon, obscure French comics Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress proved one of the biggest influences on that galaxy far Lucas saw a screening of Seven Samurai and reported he was “hooked” by the Akira Kurosawa classic “It’s really his visual style to me that’s so strong and unique and a very powerful element of how he tells his stories,” Lucas told Criterion in a 2001 interview Lucas later in the same interview said that as he wrote the screenplay to Star Wars he decided to tell it from the point of view of the “two lowliest characters.” Hidden Fortress has Tahei and Matashichi two rejected soldiers who are just trying to make a quick buck between the few brain cells they have between them while A New Hope has the droids there to observe as bigger things happen around them “The fact there was a princess trying to get through enemy lines and everything I think was more of a coincidence than anything else it was more of a stand-and-fight kind of princess,” Lucas said Misa Uehara’s Princess Yuki was no wilting wallflower the story of General Rokurota Makabe (Toshiro Mifune) an old samurai with a reputation so fierce that enemies back away when they discover it’s him As Makabe tries to get Princess Yuki (Misa Uehara) to safety his companions Tahei and Matashichi (Minoru Chiaki and Kamatari Fujiwara respectively) offer pretty fairweather help — when they aren’t trying to scheme off with the wealth of gold being transported has been vanquished in battle by the Yamana clan While Lucas would claim the similarities between Hidden Fortress and A New Hope were light Makabe’s “hidden fortress” where he hides the few remaining members of the royal family is in some barren in a desolate area pretty much like Obi-wan Kenobi’s home on Tatooine a lot like the death of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru there’s General Hyoe Tadokoro (Susumu Fujita) There are plenty of shades of Darth Vader / Obi-Wan’s relationship here like the one on the Death Star that leads to the death of Kenobi Tahei and Matashichi even get a “medal,” of sorts for being reluctant heroes who might’ve turned at any point like Han Solo and Chewie in the first film (Though Solo and Chewie were far more heroic.) The band’s mission to rescue the princess of a conquered kingdom shares more than a few similarities with Star Wars We don’t have a Luke Skywalker character to serve as audience surrogate But Lucas said earlier drafts of the film had just a princess and an older Jedi trying to escape to safety The “lowly characters” of this aren’t noble enough to be the droids or charismatic enough to be Han Solo and Chewbacca In the broad strokes, the inspiration that Kurosawa has on Lucas’ trilogy have long been apparent. The Jedi themselves have a pretty samurai-like code and brandish fearsome swords. And there’s, of course, the big “what if” casting trivia of Lucas reportedly wanting Mifune, one of Kurosawa’s standby actors, to play Darth Vader But The Hidden Fortress is an important piece of the puzzle of the pastiche that became Star Wars But I don’t want to sell The Hidden Fortress short here because It’s visually incredible with well choreographed fighting and it’s easy to see why it has an enduring legacy of its own While Seven Samurai is the one often finding its way onto greatest all-time film lists (a film that has a huge cinematic legacy of its own Tonight’s episode are matches from NJPW Wrestling Hinokuni First up is a NWA title defense as new champion Hiroyoshi Tenzan defends against Big Daddy Yum Yum The challenger is former WWE developmental wrestler Byron Wilcott who has been here a few times in the past most famous for selling Kojima’s chops in the most bizarre manner possible He has good presence but everything else just feels off from his offense to his selling to his ring gear Even the announcers were saying this wasn’t good Tenzan should be the one carried at this point Tenzan eventually got the win with a second anaconda vise Makabe talks about how he had to vacate the NEVER title due to the flu He mentions how Ishii said he’d have to win the title from Ishii for it to really mean something He thinks wrestling is all about your heart Both guys are great brawlers and know their style very well Some people want to rip on Makabe because he’s one of the more protected guys (he has mainstream popularity due to his love for sweets among other things) even though he’s not as dynamic as others on the roster but he can still put up a tremendous performance in 2015 they faced off for the NEVER title at least four times and the fourth was just kind of unnecessary But in terms of how the match was…it was every match they’ve had as Ishii has this kind of vibe and style where you can get into his work pretty much immediately Ishii took very hard suplexes to the back of his head After 25 minutes of intense back and forth brawling Makabe won the NEVER title back after pinning Ishii with the King Kong knee drop There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the match I’ve seen these guys have plenty of great matches and I just kind of want to move on from watching them I think we’re only halfway done with this feud as well as far as this timeline goes so that’s kind of a bummer for me personally Ishii didn’t have anything to say after the match Makabe takes a microphone after the match and says that no matter how many times we’ve been beat Makabe backstage says he’ll disprove andy prejudices with this belt He then says anyone else watching this that has championships he says that he knew he had to get the belt back But he knew that’s the match the people wanted It’s nice to see different kinds of matches And that’ll do it for this season of New Japan on AXS We’ll return March 4 with Jim Ross replacing Maruo Ranallo Much thanks to Mauro as he really helped these initial seasons of New Japan on AXS feel really special and his knowledge of the product felt really refreshing compared to virtually everyone else who does English language broadcasting Bryan Rose is an editor from California that has been covering professional wrestling for well over a decade
