100th anniversary competition celebrates legacy of Fumihiko Maki; award raised to $100k Architecture is not merely a lineage of great structures argued Fumihiko Maki (1928-2024) in his influential manifesto “Investigations in Collective Form” (1964) The built environment is always the result of many hands and many decisions What is architecture’s role in fostering the urban fabric And how might a more collaborative architectural culture address contemporary social and ecological challenges These are the questions posed by “Collective Form/Forums,” the 2026 James Harrison Steedman Fellowship in Architecture. The biennial research competition — organized by the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, in concert with AIA St. Louis — invites early-career architects from around the world to investigate and reimagine the fundamental systems facilities and services that underlie contemporary life The 2025-26 cycle will mark the Steedman’s 100th anniversary The first competition call was issued in 1925; the first recipient long among the largest in the United States underwriting up to a year of international travel and research “The Steedman Fellowship has supported young architects for nearly a century,” said Chandler Ahrens an associate professor of architecture at the Sam Fox School and a member of the Steedman governing committee developed by jury chair and acclaimed architect and urbanist Neeraj Bhatia invites participants to grapple with Maki’s legacy the state of regional cultures in a globalized world taught at WashU from 1956-62 and co-founded the university’s Master of Urban Design program “Collective Form” was largely written during his time on campus and first published by WashU The university also commissioned Maki’s first completed structure as well as the Maki-designed Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum and Earl E Read more on the Sam Fox School website Architecture Art & Design Arts & Culture Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts Read more stories from Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts Visit Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts Thanks for visiting The use of software that blocks ads hinders our ability to serve you the content you came here to enjoy We ask that you consider turning off your ad blocker so we can deliver you the best experience possible while you are here By Chris Vetter, ProWrestling.net Contributor (@chrisvetter73) and other notable live events or television tapings you are encouraged to send a report or even basic results to dotnetjason@gmail.com but the lighting over the ring was just so-so The building was packed with about 300 standing-room-only fans Emil Jay provided solo commentary as we began * I am aware of some travel issues from out East so we’ll see if everyone made it in for this show “The Bollywood Boyz” Harv Sihra and Gurv Sihra vs “Midnight Heat” Ricky Gibson and Eddie Pearl These are two top tag teams in the Pacific Northwest in recent years so it’s disappointing they are facing each other here — they’ve already done this dance multiple times Eddie accidentally did a monkey flip on Gibson The BB applied stereo Sharpshooters at 2:30 and Emil noted that these two teams “are no strangers to each other.” Gibson hit a backbreaker over his knee at 4:30 and tied Harv in a bow-and-arrow Gurv was yanked off the apron so he couldn’t get a hot tag Harv got an inside cradle and pinned Gibson out of nowhere Harv Sihra and Gurv Sihra defeated Ricky Gibson and Eddie Pearl at 7:58 * Promoter Brett Lauderdale joined commentary early into the next match Myers is the flamboyant character dressed like DC’s Joker and is beloved here in the Pacific Northwest Oliver is freshly back from his ACL surgery Oliver got on the mic and noted this is his first singles match in GCW in nine months and we got a “both these wrestlers!” before the bell Myers wanted a kiss; Oliver grabbed him and applied a headlock as Brett and Emil talked about Oliver’s training and recovery Myers ‘dove’ through the ropes; it was awkward Oliver kissed Myers on the mouth to the delight of the crowd Oliver hit a modified Acid Bomb faceplant in the corner at 9:00 Myers caught Oliver on a crossbody attempt and hit a neckbreaker-bodyslam move Myers hit a knee strike to the forehead for a nearfall Jordan Oliver defeated Randy Myers at 11:09 The crowd was hot and split at the bell; this might be the match of the show Emil said this is their fourth singles meeting A feeling-out process early as Masha tied up the left arm Miyu nailed a series of kicks in the corner at 2:30 Miyu hit a running Penalty Kick on the apron with Miyu hitting a series of roundhouse kicks to the chest Masha hit her Helluva Kick and rolling Koppo Kick combo for a nearfall at 5:30 They hit stereo spin kicks to the head and both collapsed at 7:30 and we got a loud “GCW!” chant then a Death Valley Driver for a believable nearfall at 9:00 Masha blocked a knee strike to the jaw and hit the White Knight Driver (piledriver) for the pin Really good action but I wish this had gone longer Masha Slamovich defeated Miyu Yamashita to retain the JCW World Title at 10:13 * Footage aired of Matt Cardona and Jimmy Lloyd brawling a day ago An odd choice for a match as both are heels; Angels is HATED in the Pacific Northwest with fans greeted him with an “Alan Asshole!” chant Mance immediately caved in his chest with some chops where Angels accidentally chopped the ring post at 1:00 Emil got back in the booth and noted how rare it is that Mance is the more popular guy in the match Mance got a door from under the ring and slid it into the ring Angels dove through the ropes onto Mance and they continued to brawl at ringside Angels hit chairshots to the back and remained in charge as the crowd continued to chant “Alan Asshole!” Mance powerbombed Angels onto the ring apron at 6:00 Angels threw a chair at Mance’s head Mance slammed Angels across two open folding chairs and got a nearfall Angels hit a top-rope frogsplash onto Mance on a door bridge for a nearfall at 9:00 and Mance hit a tornado DDT through a door in the corner for the pin A good brawl that didn’t get gross or bloody Mance Warner defeated Alan Angels at 10:48 and I’m wondering if they did that to allow Joey Janela and Megan Bayne time to get to the building I don’t think this was the originally slated opponent for Brooke He pushed her into a corner and mockingly patted her on her head “I don’t think you want to toy around with Brooke Havok.” She mockingly patted his head and got massive cheers John planted his foot in her throat in the ropes and kept her grounded Brooke hit a Cross Rhodes swinging faceplant (she was trained at the Nightmare Factory) for the pin Brooke Havok defeated Jeffrey John at 8:19 * A video aired of the former Fuego Del Sol He said that “Fuego” died when he was released by AEW not when he lost to Atticus Cogar two weeks ago He vowed that “Fuego Del Sol is dead.” He will now continue wrestling as KJ Orso “I will never answer to the dead name of Fuego Del Sol,” he said “C4” Cody Chhun and Guillermo Rosas vs it was no guarantee Joey and Megan would get here I really didn’t know until they walked through the door that they made it (Joey had updated their fiasco on his Twitter page during the day.) Emil returned to the booth and noted exactly as I thought — the intermission was to give Bayne and Joey time to get here Joey and Cody opened and traded standing switches Megan entered and is MUCH taller than Rosas; they traded shoulder blocks at 2:00 She did a test of strength with each member of C4 and she hit a double clothesline C4 hit a dropkick-and-suplex combo on Joey at 4:00 Cody hit some chops and kept Janela grounded CF hit a team suplex at 6:30 for a nearfall Joey hit a top-rope moonsault press on his standing opponents She hit a big belly-to-belly release suplex on Cody then she powerbombed Chhun onto Rosas for a nearfall Joey and Megan hit stereo suplexes at 9:30 They hit high-low blows on Chhun for a nearfall Rosas hit a powerbomb on Joey for a nearfall Megan dove through the ropes and landed on Rosas deep into the crowd at 11:00 Cody hit a flip dive onto all three on the floor Joey and Megan each hit back suplexes back in the ring Megan Bayne and Joey Janela defeated Cody Chhun and Guillermo Rosas at 12:51 Danger is a thin high-flyer but he recently had some hardcore matches against John Wayne Murdoch Cogar threw a ladder from the ring onto Danger on the floor Atticus hit a running knee onto a chair where Danger’s head was resting He did a slingshot that sent Danger’s head into some cooking skewers Skewers were shoved into Danger’s mouth Danger hit an Asai Moonsault to the floor at 6:00 Joey Janela jumped in the ring and attacked Atticus and we had a (rare!) bell to end the match * Janela got on the mic and said everyone knows there are no disqualifications in GCW and he demanded to know who rang the bell He berated Atticus Cogar and he put over Mr She hit a crossbody block from the apron to the floor He hit a backbreaker over his knee at 4:30 Itoh hit a chokeslam on an open chair that defied gravity and logic Itoh jumped on his back and locked in a sleeper but he was able to turn it into a TKO stunner off his shoulders for a nearfall at 7:30 and she got her pizza cutter and used it across his forehead She hit a running Facewash kick in the corner for a nearfall at 11:00 Effy hit a spinning Tombstone Piledriver for the pin Decent match; I’ve never been a big fan of comedy in the main event Effy defeated Maki Itoh to retain the GCW World Title at 12:08 Jimmy Lloyd for the GCW Ultraviolent Title Lloyd shoved a fork into Tremont’s forehead Tremont hit a Death Valley Driver through a door in the corner Tremont powerbombed Lloyd through a glass pane bridge for the pin Matt Tremont defeated Jimmy Lloyd to retain the GCW Ultraviolent Title at 12:40 Final Thoughts: The show on Saturday in Los Angeles was an ‘A show,’ with a big angle involving Fuego Del Sol and some marquee matches — it is arguably the best GCW show of 2025 even better than the heavily promoted Hammerstein show in New York and the shows in Las Vegas this felt like a ‘B show’ in front of a smaller crowd (Emil does a fine job but he’s not on the level of a Dave Prazak or a Veda Scott) Masha-Miyu was the standout match and if you only have time to watch one match from this event C4 was really good and my guess is they really didn’t have a lot of time to plot it out with the late arrival of the duo Angels-Mance was a good brawl and takes third PRIVACY POLICY INFO HERE >>A good brawl that didn’t get gross or bloody.<>Late in the match Lloyd shoved a fork into Tremont’s forehead Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. UIC hosted an event at the University Club of Chicago on the need to advance care Menopause carries major consequences not only for health care more than 1 billion women are in the menopausal transition or postmenopausal stage with many now spending one-third of their lives postmenopausal Symptoms — like hot flashes and mood swings — can persist for over a decade significantly affecting long-term health outcomes for women 50 percent of Black women experience hot flashes for more than 10 years “How many women fall out of the workforce for a day when they reach this time of their life?” Berry said at the event “How much money do we cost the health care system because menopausal women don’t have access to care?” Menopause symptoms can impact brain function another important consideration for research “We don’t think those symptoms are just benign,” Maki said “We have tied them to Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers to little stroke-like lesions in the brain You don’t need a scientist to tell you this but we have an imperative to do better for women And we’re going to do that together.”  Menopause research and care remain underfunded and under-researched and are not a global health priority according to Maki and Berry. The dearth of health professionals trained in menopause care only exacerbates these shortcomings workforce currently in some phase of menopause and $1.8 billion lost annually in productivity addressing the issue is not just about health — it is an economic imperative Berry candidly shared her personal experience of menopause at the event which brought together state leaders like Illinois Lt It ended up being a very common symptom of perimenopause,” Berry said “I don’t blame my doctor because I’ve since learned that only 13% of doctors in this country understand the menopausal body It’s one chapter in medical school.”  Berry’s experience spurred her into action.   when all of these things started happening to me I’ve got to do something,” Berry said I have to go ask the questions of my politicians … And so that got me on this advocacy mission of realizing that this is my second act and my second-act mission is to help women.”  Berry and Maki connected for a similar event at UIC last year that included former First Lady Jill Biden and highlighted the pressing need for research on women’s health Berry also recently launched Respin a company she created to provide women with reliable Maki serves as medical adviser for Respin Health a digital health offering for menopause care and symptom relief Maki led three panel discussions at the event on the economic impacts and workforce initiatives surrounding menopause access to care for menopause and the need for investment in menopause research 12-18 will officially be known as Illinois Menopause Awareness Week World Menopause Day is observed annually Oct 18 to raise awareness about menopause and the support available to women to improve their health and well-being.  Maki, who is well-known for her research on menopause and its effect on cognition, also unveiled the Center for Health, Awareness and Research on Menopause (CHARM) at UIC The center addresses critical gaps in medical training research and global data by leveraging UIC’s integrated academic health enterprise.  “What you’re hearing today is the brainchild “We’re going to make a is about to take the lacrosse world by storm a lacrosse communications profession and broadcaster from Victoria She began playing box lacrosse at a young age with the boys and transitioned to the girls’ field game a few years later consistently showing her knowledge and passion for the game she is set to make history as the first female color analyst during an NLL broadcast when the Halifax Thunderbirds host the Albany FireWolves on December 28 at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax “It was honestly just a rush of excitement and pure honor,” said Jenner after learning she’d be stepping into the role as an analyst “It’s also the feeling to be given the privilege to be able to have that opportunity.” the Executive Vice President for Broadcast and Media for the NLL was ecstatic to give Jenner the opportunity to bring her knowledge and passion to the color commentary role “Fans who have seen Maki in her role as a reporter know what she brings to every broadcast,” said Feld “Lacrosse is in her blood which makes her connection to our fans so genuine She has certainly earned the opportunity to bring her natural talent knowledge of the game and fresh energy to the analyst role.” Jenner began her NLL media career with TSN doing weekly ‘Lax Facts’ segments during the TSN Game of the Week she spent the 2021-22 season with both the New York Riptide and NLL on TSN She was then given the opportunity to work for the Halifax Thunderbirds as their Communications Manager “I interned with the Victoria Shamrocks Senior ‘A’ team in the summer of 2022 and after the season was over when I was on my way to a separate job interview when the digital media person called me and said ‘We have an opening in our communications department would you want to move to Halifax?’ I just said ‘No brainer Since joining the Thunderbirds organization Jenner has excelled in the lacrosse media industry sideline reporting and multiple interviews of the players and coaches Jenner earned a key role at one of the most prestigious lacrosse tournaments in the world the Canadian Junior ‘A’ Box National Championship: The Minto Cup it’s one of the most sought after championships in lacrosse and it’s one of the hardest to win,” Jenner commented “When I found out that I was going to be able to go back and be part of this panel and be part of this broadcast team Being a member of the game broadcast and studio intermission crew was just the first step in Jenner’s history-making week Maki was everywhere: at the desk during the intermissions analyzing the games and carrying out sideline interviews and reports throughout the tournament Assigned to call the Semi-Final game alongside Jake Elliott Jenner moved the needle for women in sport “I had no idea that I was the first female to call a game until Jake Elliot said so on the broadcast,” Jenner said surprisingly and I was so invested in the moment of what was going on that it took me until and to have Cheryl Pounder and Daniella Ponticelli tweet and reach out and offer their congratulations This is a huge milestone and huge step for women in the lacrosse world and it took kind of a while to sink in.” Another recent milestone for Jenner was calling Canada’s inaugural game at the Women’s World Lacrosse Box Championships in Utica “We’re on such a trend of positives in that female sports realm that I’m so lucky to just be kind of a part of that history And I just have so much respect for what these women have accomplished in order to help get this sport to that point.” Jenner has always been a huge advocate for women’s lacrosse and women breaking barriers Now that she has opened the doors for so many more women after her incredible summer she wants to continue that trend in Halifax to have someone that they can look up to is huge And I think to be a positive role model for these young women is great,” Jenner said proudly “I’ve been lucky enough to coach now for two seasons in the Halifax region for box and being able to start a field program is great too send me my clips on Instagram of me doing my game day previews When the FireWolves visit Halifax to take on the Thunderbirds Jenner will try to honor her mentors in the business by being prepared and passionate That is going to be so difficult,” said Jenner nervously He’s one of the best minds when it comes to color commentating and analyzing lacrosse and so I’ve really appreciated him taking me under his wing and we’ve had a few meetings and got to talk about it and learning some different tips from him and getting feedback.” had nothing short of great sights for Maki Jenner’s future within the lacrosse world “To compare Maki’s journey to lacrosse I think we’re just in the second quarter,” he stated “Maki’s dedication to the sport her craft and her fans will continue to propel her forward and it’s clear that we’ve only just begun to see the full extent of her impact on the lacrosse world there’s no doubt that Maki will continue to break new ground and help shape the future of lacrosse broadcasting.” Jenner’s uncle and longtime NLL broadcaster praised his niece on the significance of what this will mean for women in lacrosse and on-air talent “It’s just another mountain that she has been able to climb on her journey,” [Teddy] Jenner proudly stated “Having become the first female to do a lot of things in the lacrosse world over the past few years it’s not surprising that she’s getting this opportunity.” One of Maki Jenner’s strengths is her storytelling ability coaches and fans in a way which brings the game to life “Having been around the game of lacrosse since she was born speaking to it comes naturally to her and that resonates with the fans so very well,” Jenner said complementing his niece “Her knowledge of the intricate details gives her the ability to break it all down seamlessly and accurately.” characterized Jenner’s journey to the NLL and this moment for women in lacrosse “Maki has been a fantastic addition to our Thunderbirds family and has made a positive impact since she arrived She has worked hard to grow the Thunderbirds’ presence in the community along with strengthening our youth academy programming.” Jenner is looking forward to her history-making night when Halifax hosts Albany on Saturday We are using cookies to give you the best experience on our website You can find out more about the annual 'KYSSMAS for Kids" fundraiser are the lives that are changed, and how those feelings of caring and acceptance have resonated over the past 3 decades All the time we hear the stories of adults, and many business owners and parents, who check in with a donation, telling us how they'll never forget their KYSSMAS. One of the most dramatic stories is that of John Maki who has assembled an army of friends over the past few years sending the total raised to unheard-of levels "Growing up in Missoula, I was dropped off at daycare, around about seven months old, and never picked up. So at about seven months, I entered into the state foster care system," John told us Thursday on Daybreak with Dennis "Now I was very blessed in the world of foster kids because the lady who owned the daycare took me and my sister home that day and she never let us go Although John says they never wanted anything after that as he had probably 30 or 40 foster brothers and sisters over time And he'll never forget the one year he was given a gift card you start out at the beginning of the store and you're like ' I could buy anything I want'," John recalls To be able to go out and buy gifts for my sister I was always that person that was like 'I gotta get them something,' right I finally have a little. I gotta buy that gift." RELATED: 2024 KYSSMAS for Kids: What You Need to Know John went on to raise his own family and meet dozens of people as manager at Direct Source in Missoula But he never forgot that seminal moment in his young life he made his first $250 donation for KYSSMAS for Kids "I enjoyed the cause," John says And I remember all five of those friends saying 'Yes "I remember getting done with KYSSMAS for Kids and I got in my car and right here came the emotions In 2022, John came back with $10,000 dollars in donations, absolutely flooring everyone. ExecMBA’11) CU Boulder was more than a place to earn a degree — it was where she found her community launched a successful career in telecommunications and built lifelong connections that continue to shape her story From her leadership roles in technology to her volunteer work bridging the broadband gap in rural Colorado Rochelle exemplifies the spirit of a Forever Buff I’ve spent over 30 years in technology and telecommunications, with two decades in executive leadership. Recently, I stepped down as vice president of service at IQ Wired, but I still have ownership shares in the company. My latest passion project is volunteering for Colorado's Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment initiative I co-chair the telecommunications committee helping to ensure broadband access in rural communities It’s incredible work because broadband brings opportunities for education and business that many take for granted We’re a proud Buff family through and through with a deep love for the university and all it represents so I visited CU Boulder during my college search — and I was hooked I received an academic scholarship through my mom’s work but my career path shifted when I got a job with Call Connect during college My manager asked if I’d like to learn about telecommunications built lifelong friendships and gained the confidence to forge my path Leaving home to attend CU was a leap of faith but it was what I needed to grow and mature I found my community and built friendships that have lasted a lifetime independence and the value of connection — qualities that continue to shape me today That sense of community inspired me to stay involved CU is more than a university; it’s a family I want to give back to a place that gave me so much I started volunteering with the Forever Buffs Denver chapter in 2011. We organize everything from watch parties for away football games to volunteer initiatives like Buffs Give Back where we partner with Denver Health to make care packages for new moms My favorite events are the scholarship luncheons Hearing their stories and seeing how even a small contribution can make a big difference is incredibly inspiring I’m also passionate about supporting CU Athletics and am a member of the Buffalo Belles a group dedicated to supporting CU Athletics It’s a way to instill the value of giving back as a family We help ensure its continued growth and success by mentoring students raising scholarship funds and sharing CU’s achievements Staying connected reinforces the value of our diplomas and empowers future generations of Buffs It doesn’t take much time to stay connected mentor a student or simply visit campus to see how CU is evolving It’s a great reminder of why you chose CU in the first place we can build a brighter future for the next generation of Buffs There’s something special about talking to other Buffs — a shared pride that’s hard to explain “Buffs look after Buffs.” That sense of connection and support makes being a Forever Buff so meaningful editor@colorado.edu University of Colorado Boulder PrivacyLegal & TrademarksCampus Map University of Colorado Boulder eating a succulent village meal is gastronomy manifest Monster Hunter Wilds’ meal invitations grant the best bonuses in the game ranging from extra monster carves to the ability to negate a potentially quest-killing cart or faint And the best part of all is that they’re free There’s no need for you to rustle up your own materials via gathering or trades All you need to do is show up when you’re invited and get ready for a feast for the eyes and your tummy So forget those sad looking meals made from rations Here’s how to score those precious meal invites This guide will also show you how to deal with some of the buggy features of meal invites including missing invitation givers and how to find them To unlock meal invitations in Monster Hunter Wilds you will need to progress far in the game’s story campaign and unlock all the villages first you will need to raise your affinity with the various villages’ residents which can be done by completing side quests from the game’s various NPCs You’ll especially want to pay attention to side quests in Kunafa you will start to occasionally get invites from one of four village representatives Windsong Village (Plains)Maki: Azuz (Oilwell Basin)Tasheen: Sild Keeper’s Village (Ruins of Wyveria)Allhearken: Peaks of Accord (Suja)These meal invitations will pop up via messages and also the World Map The message will often say the name of the villager “would like to offer a meal.” You can also verify that the invite is active when you open up your world map and see a Well-done steak icon right next to the area you can manually travel there via the map or use the meal invite shortcut under the “Environment Overview” tab by clicking on it and then choosing Fast Travel The meal giver is usually shown on the map so you can just pin them and your Seikret will automatically take you to them they can also bug out a bit from time to time the meal giver will not show up in the map for some reason and you will need to find them This makes it important to familiarize yourself with their locations so you can head there yourself you will find the meal giver but they will have an “X” icon on them That icon means that they are otherwise busy and they will need to finish whatever task they are doing so you can talk to them All you need to do is wait until she’s done you might see an “X” icon while she’s talking to Yabran This will actually cancel his conversation with Maki as well and you will be able to talk to him This happened several times with Maki and I eventually found her coming back from an expedition from outside the village you will need to wait for Maki to walk all the way up to her normal location and drop off her equipment inside one of the houses you usually just need to find her meditation spot it can be a bit tricky when he disappears during a sandstorm because that’s when the villagers of Kunafa lock themselves inside their homes Capcom fixes or fine tunes this a bit as it can be confusing when you get an invite and can’t easily find the meal giver who invited you Why should you accept meal invitations in Monster Hunter Wilds? The reason why you should take advantage of meal invitations when they pop up is because of the buffs they provide Each village meal provides three guaranteed buffs which lets you nullify one cart of faint if you fall in battle It also throws in two random buffs that you can get from normal BBQ grilling Since it isn’t possible to check the effects of active food skills for Wilds during launch we don’t have the description for some of them we’ll use past games as a potential guideline Here are the guaranteed skills from each village meal invitation: The buffs from village meal invitations also last for a full hour which means you can have them active for three to five hunts depending on the situation a guide to meal invitations in Monster Hunter Wilds This guide will be updated once more information is confirmed so make sure to check back in the future Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker Thanks for visiting Riding the struggle bus through dry January and need a drink that’ll take you out of this world I suggest you order the galaxy bubble tea from Maki House in Green The fast-casual eatery serves up serious eye candy in the drinks department a tasteless ingredient made from purple yams that makes for a colorful gradient in drinks but that’s not all that makes up Maki House’s menu The restaurant serves cooked and raw sushi rolls as well as teriyaki dishes sumo chicken and deep-fried crab crunch rolls are also available for months at a time Maki House resides in what was once a CiCis Pizza customers are greeted by chalkboards broadcasting current specials Orders are taken at the counter and delivered to the table Peckish people who like to see their food being made can also use the bar seating in front of the kitchen’s sushi-making station whether you’re grabbing a drink to go or craving a sit-down meal I sampled a variety of Maki House’s offerings when visiting with Betty Lin-Fisher, the Beacon Journal’s former consumer columnist and medical reporter. In late 2023 Betty became the national consumer reporter for USA Today (read all her new stories here) but still makes an effort to catch up with her Beacon Journal friends I ordered the aforementioned galaxy bubble tea ($5.49) comprised of aurora water Betty got the restaurant’s sweet garden bubble tea ($5.49) The restaurant’s classic rolls are pretty reasonably priced between $4.99 and $7.49 Betty ordered her tried and true spicy tuna roll ($5.99) It came as a bit of a surprise when the spicy mayo was incorporated into the roll and not as a topping like she’d seen at most other restaurants Wanting to try something more outside of her wheelhouse Betty also tried the sweet potato roll ($4.99) a dish made of fried sweet potato and cream cheese “I've never seen an option for a sweet potato again because I'm not a [sushi] connoisseur but I think I'd stick to my tried and true.” We had to test out their teriyaki plates as well so I picked the chicken and shrimp teriyaki ($11.99) — a recommendation from the reader who suggested visiting this eatery — and Betty got the shrimp teriyaki ($10.99) Both dishes came with vegetables and soba noodles (99 cents each) We enjoyed our entrees and split one of Maki House’s specials eel and eel sauce called a tiger roll ($14.99) Maki’s House’s most popular drinks are the house special fruit tea (golden oolong tea lemon and passionfruit) and dirty milk tea (milk tea and brown sugar) customers gravitate towards the Maki crunch roll — a deep fried roll stuffed with crab cream cheese and topped with spicy crab and spicy mayo — or angry dragon roll — tempura shrimp cream cheese and scallions with spicy crab and a sweetened Japanese mayo on top Alejandro said the clear winner is their rainbow roll which is a California roll topped with tuna Maki House’s best-selling entrée is its chicken teriyaki box which comes with vegetables and white rice would often get chicken teriyaki from a restaurant that was previously in the food court of Belden Village Mall Those visits introduced them to their mentor and third co-owner whose family owned the mall eatery at the time Sun opened Li Asian Cuisine on Dressler Road in Canton The three worked together at Li Asian for three years before the brothers left the business Alejandro and Enrique reunited to open Maki House in May 2022 “One of the best things that’s happened to us is being able to count on each other … ,” said Alejandro “That’s one of the biggest blessings that comes with working with your partners and owning a place like this.” Contact Beacon Journal reporter Tawney Beans at tbeans@gannett.com and on Twitter @TawneyBeans Website: ordermakihouse.com Thanks for visiting « Back
