Small presses have had a rough year
but as the literary world continues to conglomerate
we at Literary Hub think they’re more important than ever
every (work) day in March—which just so happens to be National Small Press Month—a Lit Hub staff member will be recommending a small press book that they love
The only rule of this game is that there are no rules
except that the books we recommend must have been published
Unfortunately there is no exact definition or cutoff
All of the presses mentioned here are considered to be small presses by the recommending editors
All of the books mentioned here are considered to be great by the recommending editors

Civil Beat asked candidates to answer some questions about where they stand on various issues and what their priorities will be if elected
The following came from Lauren Cheape Matsumoto, Republican candidate for State House District 38, which covers portions of Mililani and Waipio Acres and Mililani Mauka. Her opponent is Democrat Alexander Ozawa
Go to Civil Beat’s Election Guide for general information, and check out other candidates on the General Election Ballot
What is the biggest issue facing your district
Cost of living continues to be of the utmost concern
I have introduced legislation to eliminate the General Excise Tax on food and medicine as well as lower income tax
Removing the GET would immediately lower daily living costs and help local families
I’ve consistently advocated to lower the income tax which the Legislature finally passed this past session
This gives families additional funds to save
the price of housing in Hawaii is one of the largest contributors to our cost of living and needs long-term
dedicated solutions to ensure our future generations can afford to stay in Hawaii
This past session my bill supporting the Hula Mae First Time Home Buyer Program passed
providing a great path toward home ownership for our local families
We also need to look at our education system pipeline
to ensure our students are being prepared for future careers that will provide high-paying jobs and help diversify Hawaii’s economy
I’ve spent the last 12 years dedicated to reducing our high cost of living and would be honored to continue working toward making Hawaii more affordable
How do you feel about the massive income tax cut just approved by the Legislature and the governor
Do you have any concerns that it will force reductions in state services in the years to come
The income tax cut was long overdue and it aligns with my ongoing efforts to reduce the cost of living in Hawaii
especially for middle- and low-income families
I have introduced several bills over the last 12 years to lower our income tax rate and was encouraged to see the state Legislature finally pass a bill like this
Hawaii was among the highest-taxed states in the entire country
Our residents deserve to keep more of their hard earned income in their pockets
It’s a positive —albeit overdue — step forward toward reducing the tax burden on Hawaii’s residents and fostering economic growth
we need to focus on streamlining government operations and eliminating waste to prevent any potential reduction in services due to the tax cuts.
Hawaii continues to struggle with pay-to-play politics and corruption in government
What meaningful reforms do you think would change state government for the better
we need greater transparency and accountability in Hawaii’s government to combat corruption
I support stronger enforcement of existing ethics laws
implementing more stringent disclosure requirements for lobbyists and expanding access to public records
I support reforms like term limits for legislators and stricter regulations on campaign contributions during legislative sessions
which restricted lobbyists from donating to an elected official during a legislative session
While this bill represented a significant step in the right direction
Candidates often say they will support reform proposals in the Legislature
And yet major reform proposals don’t pass
Will you back good- government proposals even if it means going against leadership
can you point to an example of a reform that you supported
I have a clear track record in the state house for supporting legislative reform proposals and have introduced many bills myself
Government reform and transparency have been among the top priorities I have included in my legislative bill package for the past few years
I have introduced numerous pieces of legislation covering issues such as term limits and ethics reform
I introduced 27 of the suggestions to improve the standards of conduct concerning elected officials as recommended by the Foley Commission to Improve Standards of Conduct.
I have advocated in our House rule process to address problems related to our committee chairs having too much power
being a member of the minority party frees me from Democrat intra-party politics and allows me the freedom to make the decisions I feel are best for our Legislature and state as a whole.
Do you support comprehensive public financing of elections for candidates who choose to participate
I am open to the idea of public financing of elections with clear guardrails as I see the potential of leveling the playing field
increasing the diversity of candidates and lowering corruption
This past session I surveyed my district with the question: “Should the State allow political candidates to use public funds to finance election campaigns?” Out of the 701 people surveyed
10.7% were in support and 11.7% were undecided
From conversations with those in the community
I believe the biggest concern with public financing is that many in the district want to ensure that taxpayer dollars are used wisely
there needs to be clearly vetted policies written into the program to ensure money is used responsibly.
Hawaii is the only Western state without a statewide citizens initiative process
I would support a blended approach to a citizens initiative
meaning instead of having an initiative go straight to the voters to codify
if passed the initiative would be mandated to go before the Legislature to be considered and vetted before becoming law
There have been many instances nationwide where citizens initiatives conflicted and confounded existing laws and ended up confusing voters and/or using substantial state revenues to mitigate
It is a Legislature’s responsibility to have informed debate on bills before they become law and I believe that needs to be part of the process
There are hundreds of laws that make up the Hawaii Revised Statutes
and legislative members and committee staff are relied upon to identify any conflicts between existing laws and proposed bills
hearings by legislative committees are important to identify possible impacts to citizens
and unforeseen consequences before a bill is made law
This blended approach gives citizens a more direct hand in issues that the Legislature spends its time on while providing safeguards against special interest money abuse and ensures that the initiative fits appropriately within current law.
Thanks to their campaign war chests and name familiarity
incumbents are almost always reelected in Hawaii legislative races
Should there be term limits for state legislators
as there are for the governor’s office and county councils
I am a strong supporter of term limits for the state Legislature
We have limits in most every other level of elected office and it would make sense to implement it in the state House and Senate as well
I think term limits can help change the political climate because term limits can promote fresh ideas
reduce opportunities for corruption and dilute the concentration of power
However, I also understand that legislators need enough time in their elected office to fully utilize their position in order to increase effectiveness and accomplish their goals for their time in office
I introduced a bill to support term limits
HB 1703 proposed a constitutional amendment to limit the terms of members to a maximum of 12 years in the House of Representatives or Senate
the measure did not receive an initial hearing in the Legislature
but it should not take an entire lifetime.
What will you do to ensure accountability at the Legislature
Do you support ideas such as requiring the Sunshine Law to apply to the Legislature or banning campaign contributions during session
I have always advocated for greater transparency and accountability in the Legislature
and I support applying the Sunshine Law to the Legislature
I am also for greater transparency for all campaign contributions
I supported HB 89 which prohibits elected officials from soliciting and accepting campaign contributions during any regular or special session of the state legislature
Although the Legislature did ban fundraisers during session
I think a cleaner solution would be to also ban campaign contributions during session as this could help to prevent corruption.
How would you make the Legislature more transparent and accessible to the public
Opening conference committees to the public
Stricter disclosure requirements on lobbying and lobbyists
How could the Legislature change its own internal rules to be more open
For years I introduced legislation for a remote testimony program
the state House finally moved to a hybrid program allowing the public to submit testimony in writing
I also support increasing this access even further by introducing legislation that would allow pre-recorded testimony videos submitted before the convening of the committee hearing
I support stronger disclosure requirements for lobbyists and lobbying organizations
We currently have registration requirements for lobbyists
and thanks to a bill I supported — HB 137 — lobbyists will now be required to also disclose which bills they are addressing and what their positions are on those measures beginning Jan
One of the best ways to ensure our legislative process is transparent is to educate the public on how to get involved
There are a number of tools available to the public through the state Capitol
like the Public Access Room and legislative website
my office has continued to work diligently to create instructional guides on how to get involved in the legislative process which are available. In 2019 I created a Legislative Activity book to teach children about the legislative process.
Many people have talked about diversifying the local economy for many years now
and yet Hawaii is still heavily reliant on tourism
should be done differently about tourism and the economy
Three sectors we should invest in are the film industry
and agriculture & agricultural tourism
Film is an existing yet underutilized industry we could leverage to stimulate our economy
It could quickly create jobs and add much-needed dollars to help our state
As a member of the Legislature’s Economic Development committee I have advocated to remove the current cap on the Hawaii Film Tax Credit
This would give us a competitive advantage over other locations and push the film industry in our state forward
We occupy a unique geographic position halfway between Asia and the continental U.S
I believe we can use this advantage to develop a strong local tech industry
I have championed several STEM bills that would strengthen the pipeline for technological jobs in our state
and tech will provide high-paying jobs with a small footprint
the state needs to provide the infrastructure to help our local farmers
Hawaii has the potential to be successful in agricultural tourism
I know we need to encourage our local farmers to begin to invest in value-added products to help them raise their bottom line.
An estimated 60% of Hawaii residents are struggling to get by
a problem that reaches far beyond low-income and into the middle class
What ideas do you have to help the middle class and working families who are finding it hard to continue to live here
eliminating the GET on items such as food and medicine would have a tremendous impact on the day-to-day living costs for many Hawai‘i residents
Hawaii is one of only 13 states to tax groceries
Typically this type of tax is felt most by those in the lower and middle income classes
and eliminating the GET would have an immediate impact on the cost of living for many families
early child care is one of their greatest costs
As the mother of a 4-year old and a 6-year-old
I recently had both children in preschool and my entire paycheck went to pay for their tuition
This is important for many families because child care is one of the largest expenses after rent or mortgage
in 2019 the average cost of child care per child in Hawaii is around $14,000 a year
I have introduced many bills over the years to support early childhood education from tax credits to certifications and pay for preschool teachers
I also introduced a paid family leave bill to help our families be able to care for their loved ones.

along with Matsumoto’s gang of misfits known as The Atrocious Alliance
helped catapult All Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling into the big leagues and revolutionized the sport for both men and women
before The Queen of Villains drops stateside
we’re giving you a crash course on the legends
and the epic matches that took these women to the top in Japan
The Queen of Villains takes us back to the chaotic
focusing on Joshi Proresu — the Japanese term for women's wrestling that cuts through gender divides in a way you won’t find in WWE or All Elite Wrestling
Joshi wrestling didn’t treat women’s matches as an afterthought
and emotionally charged storytelling that male-dominated promotions like New Japan Pro Wrestling and All Japan were known for
with an intensity that rivaled anything the guys were doing
All Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling (AJW) was the place for joshi wrestling in Japan — and for a long time
This is the company that booked the legendary clashes between Matsumoto and the Crush Gals during the mid-80s
AJW first found success in the early '80s thanks to stars like Jaguar Yokota and Devil Masami
but it was the unprecedented mainstream fame of the Crush Gals — and their explosive rivalry with Matsumoto — that really took things to the next level
AJW dominated the Joshi scene until the 1990s when the forced retirement of the Crush Gals started a slow decline
A series of bad investments led to bankruptcy in 1997
and the company lost media deals until it eventually folded in 2005
AJW was an absolute breeding ground for innovation
giving us some of the most iconic moves in wrestling
How about the Vertebreaker or Death Valley Driver
and they’ve become staples of the wrestling world
These trailblazers weren’t just redefining women's wrestling — they were reshaping wrestling as a whole
leaving a lasting imprint on the sport’s DNA that’s still felt in the ring today
AJW matches can be hard to find whole on the internet but if you're curious about the company's body of work, you can find a match guide on Cagematch
The Crush Gals were the faces of pro wrestling in Japan
rivaling the similar cultural zeitgeist Hulk Hogan had in the US with Hulkamania
Lioness Asuka (Tomoko Kitamura) and Chigusa Nagoya captured the hearts of Japan with a mix of youthful charm
and a massive following of teenage fangirls — not to mention their successful run as pop idols
winning AJW’s World Women’s Wrestling Association Tag Team Championship four times
The Crush Gals were bigger than big — they were a phenomenon
The Crush Gals’ rivalry with Dump Matsumoto hit its dramatic peak on August 28, 1985, with one of the most important matches in wrestling history — a brutal hair vs. hair showdown between Chigusa Nagoya and Matsumoto
It’s a must-watch for any serious wrestling fan
While the Gals finally triumphed over Matsumoto’s stable in the 1987 Tag League the Best tournament
Nagoya and Asuka had made names for themselves as singles stars
AJW never saw the same level of success after retiring the Crush Gals and yet the company still kept the policy in place
both Nagoya and Asuka took a break from wrestling
Nagoya made some brief returns in the ’90s with AJW and JWP Joshi Puroresu
though not with the same star power she had in the ’80s
reforming the Crush Gals for semi-regular matches until GAEA folded in 2005
with her most recent send-off match happening in 2024 with West Coast Pro in San Francisco
her career was sadly cut short in 2004 due to a neck injury
with her final match fittingly being one last tag team bout with Nagoya

Crush Gals vs. Dump Matsumoto & Crane Yu (February 25
Lioness Asuka vs. Jaguar Yokota (August 22

Crush Gals vs. Jumping Bomb Angels (September 14, 1986)
no-holds-barred fighting style was a stark contrast to the pop-idol charm of the Crush Gals
cementing her as the quintessential "monster" heel of her time
Leading the Gokuaku Domei
Matsumoto and her gang of misfits were perfectly positioned as the nemesis of the fan-favorite Crush Gals
They didn’t just play the part of villains — they were the villains
bringing extreme violence and chaos wherever they went
and sheer brutality pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in women’s wrestling at the time
Her matches weren’t just intense; they were groundbreaking
forever changing the landscape of the sport and redefining what joshi wrestling could be
After the feud that cemented her as one of the most iconic villains in wrestling
Dump Matsumoto tried her hand at the global stage
she popped up in the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE)
pairing with Bull Nakano as “The Devils of Japan.” Their time in the U.S
but it showcased Matsumoto’s heel brilliance to a whole new audience
She didn’t stay away from AJW for long
coming back for various matches and storylines in the late '80s
She came back to the ring multiple times over the years
she’s still keeping a foothold in the wrestling world
Dump Matsumoto vs. Chigusa Nagayo (Hair vs. Hair) (August 28

Rob Font and Jean Matsumoto meet Saturday on the UFC Fight Night 252 main card at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle
Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom
11-7 UFC) has experienced mixed results of late
snapping two-fight skids twice while losing four of his past six
Font is coming off a unanimous decision over Kyle Phillips last October
A victory would give Font his first winning streak since 2021
2-0 UFC) is a 2023 Dana White's Contender Series alum who's won his first two UFC bouts
most recently a unanimous decision against Brad Katona last October
Despite having Dominick Cruz drop out of the main event
the UFC matchmakers were able to salvage the Font side of the equation by booking Matsumoto on short notice
Matsumoto was originally slated to fight in two weeks
so the 25-year-old won't exactly be coming off the couch
The UFC was nice enough to book this at a catchweight of 140 pounds due to the one-week's notice nature of it all
I was admittedly surprised to see Matsumoto favored
but I'm guessing that the oddsmakers like the age gap
accompanied by the fact that Matsumoto can be an aggressive grappler in spots
Couple that with Font's porous takedown defense percentage
and the potential pathway for the Brazilian becomes a bit more clear
when you actually go back and watch the tape
you'll see that Font has quietly improved his defense along the fence (a place where Matsumoto makes a majority of his attempts)
Font has also sharpened his transitional grappling and getup game
utilizing underhooks in conjunction with wall walks or using butterflies to create space and invert
The important thing to note about the options listed above is that none of them involve serious front-headlock exposure
which is the area where Matsumoto makes his money
but his lack of head movement and angles could feed him right into the collar ties of Font
I suppose Font crapping the bed isn't out of the equation
but I really like the chances of the New England native in this spot
A club and sub for the American is quietly on the table
but I'll officially pick Font to take this one on the scorecards
The oddsmakers and the public are slightly favoring the Brazilian fighter
listing Matsumoto (-168) and Font (+136) via FanDuel
Font and Matsumoto are expected to walk to the cage at approximately 10:10 p.m. ET. The fight will stream on ESPN+

Capcom Fighting Collection series and Street Fighter series producer Shuhei Matsumoto recently sat down for an interview with Famitsu to discuss these collections
he revealed why these collections were made in the first place
"How about we start by talking about what led to the first compilation
"Capcom released a really large amount of fun fighting games back in the day
people would definitely want to play them on modern hardware and with online capabilities
We'd been feeling that for a long time and the last compilation was us finally being able to put those feelings into reality."
The first collection consisted of Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors
this meant that half the collection was devoted to the Darkstalkers series
Famitsu would make mention of this during the interview
it really felt like the Darkstalkers series was the main focus
but what was your basis for selecting the included titles?" continued Famitsu
"We started from the assumption 'the Darkstalkers series is what people mainly want to play on modern hardware
right?' And then we really wanted to include Pocket Fighter and Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo
the development team said 'Let's bring this one over!!' for Red Earth so we included it."
this mindset also carried over into the development of the Capcom Fighting Collection 2
There were certain games that were becoming older that the developers wanted to see on more modern consoles
"And how did that lead to this current Capcom Fighting Collection 2?" asked Famitsu
"There's still a lot of games we want to bring over to modern hardware
so that made us think 'Now we HAVE to make a 2 as well
This second collection consists of Capcom vs

Jean Matsumoto vows to make the most of the opportunity when he faces top-ranked Rob Font this weekend at UFC Seattle
“We agreed right away because it’s such a great opportunity,” Matsumoto told MMA Fighting
“We still had three weeks to cut weight and finish the camp [for UFC 313] but it’s an opportunity you can’t deny
To replace Dominick Cruz and enter the ranking in my third UFC fight
Matsumoto will be a catchweight of 140 pounds
but the Brazilian said it wasn’t his request
“We were willing to make 135 because my weight was as expected
so all I had to do was dehydrate,” Matsumoto said
“but the UFC already sent the contract for 140 pounds
but it’s definitely easier without those final five pounds [laughs].”
“I’ve always imagined myself fighting at that level
“But since this opportunity came to my door now
Winning this fight skips two years in my life
I can fight anyone with the right adjustments.”
Matsumoto sees big differences in the stand-up game from Gutierrez to Font
but said he decided to maintain the same strategy given the short time for major changes
“[Font] is very experienced,” Matsumoto said
I always watch [bantamweight] fights to see what I need to work on and things like that
but I think it’s a good match-up for me because I’m also a striker and I’ve been doing this my whole life

Shuhei Matsumoto, producer for Street Fighter 6 and the Capcom Fighting Collection 2, recently sat down for an interview with Famitsu
Matsumoto was asked how Capcom came up with which games they included in the upcoming collection
"How did you decide on which titles to include this time around?" asked Famitsu
It turns out that many of the games included were games that Capcom themselves wanted to see on modern consoles
Many of these games are quite old at this point
making them difficult for new players to play
"Our first major premise was titles which we personally felt 'We want to play this on modern hardware!'" responded Matsumoto
we'd look at which titles fans seem to be clamoring for to be able to play in versions just like they used to be back in the arcades and used that data to consider our choices."
It's interesting to note that Capcom didn't simply look at one region when determining which games fans wanted to play again
Matsumoto makes references to the games that saw the most popularity in the Asian
"Project Justice and Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein were titles that were heavily requested in Japan and the Asian region in particular," said Matsumoto
"Power Stone and Power Stone 2 were games that received a lot of requests from North America and Europe."
Of course, it's also cool to think about how Capcom had to collaborate with SNK in order to bring this collection to life. Apparently, this interaction with SNK went over quite smoothly
Assuming that the Capcom Fighting Collection 2 ends up being successful enough
we could someday see a third entry in the Capcom Fighting Collection series
Matsumoto's comments here provide us with a decent understanding of how games will be decided next time as well

National Report
Hitoshi Matsumoto and publisher Bungeishunju Ltd
agreed to the withdrawal of a lawsuit filed by Matsumoto over a weekly magazine’s article alleging that the comedian forced two women to perform sexual acts
submitted the lawsuit to the Tokyo District Court in January seeking 550 million yen ($3.6 million) in compensation
He also sought an article correcting the initial one that appeared in Shukan Bunshun magazine in December 2023
Both Matsumoto and Bungeishunju released statements on Nov
8 regarding their agreement on the lawsuit
Matsumoto offered a heartfelt apology to all the women who attended the party reported in the magazine article for any hurt or discomfort they may have experienced there
he confirmed there was no direct physical evidence backing the allegation that he forced the women to perform sexual acts
He added that no money was given to the two women
Bungeishunju agreed to Matsumoto withdrawing the lawsuit after consulting with the two women whose allegations appeared in the magazine article
The lawsuit said the article was “based on extremely sloppy reporting
featuring only one-sided statements” without presenting any objective evidence backing its claims
The compensation was to cover TV programs and commercials that Matsumoto had to step down from due to the controversy that followed the article’s publication
Several sources said the two sides had been holding discussions that began this summer outside of the court proceedings related to the lawsuit

Few would argue against the late Leiji Matsumoto as one of Japan’s most visionary manga artists. Born in 1938, Matsumoto grew up fascinated by the night sky, a passion that would later shape his iconic stories such as Galaxy Express 999 and Space Pirate Captain Harlock. His work blends space-faring adventure with profound philosophical themes, exploring concepts of life, mortality and human perseverance, and has inspired creatives worldwide, even shaping the dreams of future astronauts.

In the bar scene of Kansas City, few stories are as captivating as that of Mari Matsumoto
a seasoned bartender whose journey began in the quiet farmlands of Japan
With family in the restaurant industry and farming
Matsumoto’s path has been one of passion and resilience
From bussing tables and decorating cakes to becoming a well-respected mixologist
her story is a testament to the dedication and creativity in every cocktail she crafts
Whether it’s the fusion of flavors inspired by her heritage or the drinks born out of vivid dreams
Matsumoto’s influence continues to shape and inspire the local industry
Now, at Goat & Rabbit
she brings innovation to Kansas City with her rotating seasonal cocktails.
so I grew up in the restaurant industry while my grandparents were farmers in a small village in Japan
I’ve done everything under the sun in the industry
then I was a cake decorator for a little while
Seeing guests happy grew my sense of accomplishment
So I stayed with front of the house and got into management for quite some time
Then I fell in love with the development of cocktails and recipe creation.
I moved here from San Francisco to find the other side of my family and then settled down
there wasn’t much in the culinary and bar scene
and that made me want to stay and grow with Kansas City.
What were some of the challenges you faced entering the bartending industry?
it’s not the easiest for someone who’s ethnic as well as a woman in this industry
Being taken seriously and getting a chance was extremely hard
but I was fortunate enough to have a good group of people
Even with a lot of the established gentlemen in Kansas City
they took me in and gave me my wings so I was able to flourish.
I’m stapled at Goat & Rabbit where I work with a team to develop cocktails
There are nights that I work behind the bar as I feel it’s important to still have your hand in the game
Since there’s a newer generation that’s coming into the industry
I’m developing them and training them behind the bar as well.
How do you balance your bartending work with your busy life?
I love waking up and getting myself ready and even recording make-up videos for TikTok
We all deal with a lot of anxiety and depression in the industry
but I think keeping myself busy and grounded and putting my family first is the most important part.
Why do you think anxiety and depression are so common in the restaurant industry
and I think a lot of past trauma can come to fruition
our mental health was never taken into account
but we still don’t have the health care that we need or the balance of work
and sometimes guests can wear you down as well by saying things that really trigger you
It took a long time for me to figure out self-care because I always put my staff first
I always said that we need to make sure everyone has a mental health day or just a day off
I want to make sure it’s a good work-life balance
and I’m able to give that to my staff
and self-care can be as simple as watching TV or sketching new drinks
I’ll also go get massages or acupuncture
What is your process of coming up with a new drink
A lot of it stems from my crazy dreams and synesthesia
I have a different chemical compound in my brain where I can associate days of the week with different colors
I will see a certain leaf that will inspire me
I also have a notebook beside my bed in case I dream something
and sometimes it just starts with a silly name or a mom joke.
What aspects of your life impact your drink-making?
Working on the farm with my grandparents and being able to see my mom with all the ingredients she used as a chef
I also do a lot of weird stuff from my childhood memories
like Hi-Chews or an Instant Noodle cocktail
but I also get to travel and taste a lot of ingredients that inspire me.
