What do you want to be when you grow up? Ever since he could remember, John Fink had the answer to this age-old question
Fink realized that his passion lies in mineralogy
He also has an aptitude for chemistry and knew he wanted to pursue a career that would allow him to study the great outdoors
Majoring in geology was a natural choice for him
Fink is now a senior preparing to graduate from Miami this spring. Last summer, he was granted the opportunity to participate in the International Internship Program through the Institute For Planetary Materials
He was encouraged to apply by professor of geology John Rakovan and assistant professor of geology Claire McLeod
who had completed the internship as an undergraduate
wrote his letter of recommendation for the program
"The opportunity this internship experience provides to early career scientists in the field of the geosciences is world class and had a significant impact on my decision to pursue graduate-level education," McLeod said
both in terms of scientific knowledge gain and community engagement
and I have no doubt they will on John as well."
which started his first semester freshman year
gave him an exceptional edge in the highly competitive pool of applicants," said Rakovan
"I am certain that this is one of the major factors that led to John being awarded the Misasa internship."
John Fink and his project partner Ginga working in the lab
Fink was assigned a research project based on mineralogy and crystallography
"I performed mineral synthesis and analyzed structures synthesized in conditions close to the Earth's mantle and studied how different elements cycle through subduction zones," he said
which is partly why the research was conducted there
Misasa is also home to the Institute of Planetary Materials at Okayama University and its prestigious lab
"My general lab duties were to synthesize materials and study them using a variety of analytical techniques," Fink said
"Some techniques we used were Raman spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) to identify our synthesized material
We then used magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR) to study the crystalline structure of the materials we synthesized."
Fink also expanded his worldview by experiencing Japanese culture firsthand
He visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and attended a local festival in honor of Marie Curie
who is celebrated in Misasa because of her research on radium
he presented his findings to graduate students at Tokyo University
which is a crater that was formed after the last eruption of Mt
"That part of the trip made everything worth it."
Fink also fondly remembers spending a day with the other interns at the Sea of Japan
playing a traditional Japanese game that involved being blindfolded and smashing a watermelon with a bamboo stick
he has accepted an internship at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton
He plans to become a professor of geology or conduct research in a national lab after finishing graduate school and earning his PhD
Fink said that this geology research experience has enabled him to have international connections
specifically in Japan at a world-class lab
"I diversified my world experience for future collaboration," he said
"I developed scientific communication skills through networking in the scientific community
can you do me a favor and analyze this sample?' and send it on to an international lab."
Fink added that he would love to visit Japan again
but he knows that this kind of experience is once in a lifetime
this experience has set me up for the future I want to pursue," Fink said

A teenager arrested after stabbing a teacher at a junior high school near Tokyo told police he desired to see "what would happen when someone is killed," investigative sources said Thursday
The 17-year-old also said he chose to enter the Misasa Junior High School around noon as classes would be in session at that time
He had at least three knives in his possession during the incident in Toda
a high school student from the neighboring city of Saitama
His name is being withheld because he is a minor
the alleged assailant attempted to enter a classroom on the third floor of Misasa Junior High School through its back door at around 12:20 p.m
on Wednesday while first-year students were taking an end-of-semester test
A 60-year-old teacher acting as the exam proctor got into a scuffle with the student and suffered multiple injuries to his arms and lower torso
including a deep stab wound in his abdomen
The 28 students in the classroom at the time safely evacuated
The suspect was restrained by teachers who rushed to the scene
and he was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder
as well as a smartphone and a knife from his home
the teenager went to the school by bicycle
and security camera footage showed a person who appeared to be the teen entering the compound
"I was interested in killing anyone," the suspect was quoted as saying
"I also wanted to see what would happen when someone is killed."
The police are also looking into the teenager's possible involvement in a recent spate of dead
mutilated cats found in the city of Saitama after he implied he was behind the incidents
The cases came to light in mid-February when cat parts were found on a park bench and hanging from a climbing frame at an elementary school
The body of a beheaded cat was also discovered partly buried in a field in the city of Saitama on Sunday
What appeared to be the upper part of one was also found later that day on a road about 300 meters from the field
Speaking at a regular press conference on Thursday
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said while the government has implemented seminars and other initiatives to prepare school staff for such events
it will examine what happened at the school in Toda and take necessary safety measures
Schools in Japan have improved safety measures since a 2001 incident in which a knife-wielding man entered an elementary school in Ikeda
But while most schools have crisis management manuals in place
challenges remain around the introduction of costly measures
such as installing security cameras and hiring security guards

Rural sites on Japan’s western Honshu island have launched starry night experiences to maximise the national and international recognition they have received for their beautiful night skies
which was ranked among the top locations in the country for “star visibility” in a nationwide stargazing survey conducted by the Ministry of the Environment
offers hot spring baths followed by stargazing
Participants receive binoculars and a map of the night sky before being introduced to visible constellations and celestial bodies by expert guides
“Visitors can enjoy both the town’s famous healing hot springs and clear night sky,” said a representative of Misasa Onsen Tourist Information Center
adding that participants can expect “a sky filled with stars and a breathtaking view of the Milky Way”
The experience is available for groups from April to November and is held in the planetarium in the case of bad weather
a town recognised by the US-based non-profit International Dark-Sky Association as the first International Dark Sky Community in Japan and Asia
In addition to its stargazing tours and festivals held to showcase the starry skies
visitors can now use giant telescopes and enjoy a trip to space in 3D
There are also opportunities for guests to dine on local cuisine under starry skies
The experience is a collaboration between chefs
according to Kenji Fujioka of the local tourism and exchange division
Starry sky activities played a key role in 2022 in boosting domestic tourism to Chugoku
a region in western Honshu consisting of Tottori
so travel agents are expecting similar interest from the international market as Japan’s tourism recovery continues

8.6MW sodium-sulfur (NAS) battery system to offer backup and load balancing
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has deployed a new backup battery system at a ground station site in Nagano Prefecture
NGK Insulators said the NAS batteries were deployed at the Misasa Deep Space Station (MDSS) in Saku
The sodium-sulfur (NAS) battery-based energy storage system has a rated capacity of 8,640 kilowatt-hours and an output of 1,200 kilowatts
NAS batteries are rated at 4,500 full cycle discharges or a 15-year calendar life
NAS batteries will be used to supply electric power to facilities such as the large-scale antenna
The system will also stabilize the power supply amid any instantaneous voltage drops
and also provide load balancing to the grid
The order for the batteries was received from Meidensha Corporation as part of an upgrade to the site
NGK said NAS batteries were chosen for use because they have a track record of being set up at JAXA Tanegashima Space Center alongside high capacity and discharge time
The MDSS site was completed in 2021 and features a 54-meter dish
communicating with spacecraft in the X- and Ka- band frequencies
JAXA also operates the Usuda Deep Space Center ground station in the Saku area

Mayor Eric Adams promised to build more shelters – but advocates are slamming his tactics as retreading old policies that have failed to address the underlying problems
Sinthia Vee is not sure where her art supplies went.
“That’s a big old question mark,” she said, sitting outside Tompkins Square Park in Manhattan’s East Village neighborhood, on a recent sunny afternoon. It will rain soon.
Vee said she was sitting in solidarity with others from New York’s homeless community who – like her – had just had their encampments removed.
Read moreA painter at heart whose only idea of her age is “old enough to remember a lot of things from the 80s”
Vee was now worrying about the medicine bags and art supplies she had kept in her tent that were now missing
“I lost a bunch of things that day because it was insane and we moved around a lot.”
like many other belongings of homeless people the city is trying to remove
This haze – of where things went, where things go – has become a common experience for those trying to survive the string of removal of homeless encampments across the city under its new Democratic mayor, Eric Adams. Adams is building up to keeping promises he made on the campaign trail on addressing the problem of homelessness by building more shelters
In recent years, New York City has seen a surge in homelessness: in February alone
there were nearly 50,000 people in the homeless shelters
whereas the total number of homeless people in shelters was only a little over double that number in all of 2021
During his campaign, Adams said that he would pair up police with mental health service providers to address homelessness
and that there is “nothing dignified about sleeping on the streets”
But homeless advocates have slammed Adams’s tactics as simply retreading old policies that have failed to meaningfully address the underlying problems causing homelessness and are
more geared to generating sympathetic headlines in the city’s media
who has been on the streets since he was a teenager
has been on the frontlines of protests against the city’s strict moves against homeless people since Adams became mayor in January
He said while every administration has controversial measures against homelessness
it’s Adams’s “toxic” rhetoric on the issue that makes him stand out
“I think fascism works like that – as soon as there’s a tightening of the belt or any sort of shift into harder times
that fascist and oppressive elements within countries will immediately try to attack the most vulnerable,” he said
it’s not just a loss of their homes but also a loss of their place of belonging and safety
Grima is among those who have been brutalized in his efforts to stop being removed
the officials came and told him and his friends they could sleep there but would have to remove their tents
“They ended up coming to the conclusion that we could sleep in the cold and wet so long as we didn’t cover ourselves
[and] that we couldn’t have a tent to protect ourselves from the elements,” he added

for trying to hold down his tent during a raid
He was made to wear an ankle shackle at the hospital
and was cuffed to his bed for hours before he was taken to jail
The mayor’s office said they don’t authorize any arrests
but the New York police department (NYPD) is part of the multi-agency taskforce that is participating in the sweeps
The NYPD acknowledged the arrests in a statement
claiming most people from the community have been “cooperative” and a “small number” of people were arrested
“There have been instances where individuals who have taken over public spaces to create encampments have interfered with city employees carrying out the clearing operations,” the agency said
“In those cases a small number of people have been taken into custody and issued summonses.”
a homeless advocate at the Safety Net Project of the Urban Justice Center
said even though a lot of people had their belongings organized and cleaned
their belongings weren’t spared from being thrown away
“Somebody’s encampment looks like somebody’s living room,” he said

whose encampment was removed during the initial round from under the BQE bridge in Brooklyn
said he had already sorted out his and his partner’s belongings when he got the notice
because there were things he and his partner
The mayor’s office said because each encampment is given prior notice
the authorities remove the belongings when they arrive there and the location hasn’t been cleared
For those whose belongings are thrown away
the only option is to call 311 to report it
Two days after Grima’s arrest, the mayor’s office announced a $171m addition to the budget to add more shelters and beds
But many advocates say Adams’s focus on shelters as a solution doesn’t make a difference for the community because shelters aren’t an answer for them
Only five people accepted offers to move to a shelter
This is because most homeless people don’t consider the shelters safe and some say the staff themselves can be hostile and abusive
“The staff can say whatever they want – they call you names
“They do this to senior citizens and disabled people.”
He said people are “passed around” from one shelter to another for “advocating for themselves”
in response to queries about the alleged abuse
said they are “committed to prioritizing the safety of clients
The homeless population was also particularly vulnerable during the pandemic
and putting them in shelters during this time
put them more at risk – as well as the public
people were made to live with about 20 others in a room
They were made to leave the shelters between 9am and 4pm
“It’s like they actually created a situation where the pandemic could spread more and it affected everyone,” he said
New York City’s homeless population outside shelters were significantly less affected by the pandemic than those in shelters during the first year of the pandemic
The population in shelters had 12 times the confirmed cases of Covid compared with those outside the shelters
The Black homeless community had the highest number of cases both in and out of shelters
Rodriguez and Wolf came from different generations and different parts of the country but they arrived at the same crossroad of a homeless policy that has upended their vulnerable lives
Vee hopes to someday have her own art exhibition
Gima wants to have a #Me Too moment for the shelters that will expose their conditions
“Hopefully we fight from the streets because it’s not going to come from the top,” he said

who portrays the character "Elvira" in numerous films
BOSTON - When Cassandra Peterson was casting her 1988 film "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark," a dashing young unknown named Brad Pitt auditioned for a role
She thought he was too attractive for the character
but so handsome she jotted down a note: "Yum yum."
Hilary Swank also tried to break into the industry with Peterson's help
the two ran into each other at the gym and Peterson asked how Swank's career turned out
That's when Swank told her she had won an Academy Award for Best Actress
Peterson told story after story at Boston Comic Con 2015
captivating a big and diverse crowd at the Seaport World Trade Center
She regaled the audience with tales of working with Paul Reubens in the world-famous improv troupe The Groundlings (and then on "Pee-wee's Big Adventure")

She said the studio was excited about her pilot episode
but when it came time to decide which shows were picked up
one of her biggest supporters was out sick
scantily-clad character was not right for the network
and it can be frustrating for some people when strangers approach for autographs
Peterson said she and Reubens were hanging out one day when they ran into actor and professional wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
When he realized who was asking for his autograph
She said she has two big projects in the works
including an animated Elvira television series and an autobiography "that's taking me
150 years to write." She joked the book will be longer than the Bible and
it only deals with the first two years of her life
Peterson's chest was a frequent topic of questions and comments from the crowd
She described her complex metal support system
joking that she could stand on her head and her breasts wouldn't move
But even though it may be good for a chuckle
you don't have to be a bimbo," said Peterson
"You don't have to look like Margaret Thatcher to be a strong woman
wants to be an actress and asked Peterson if she had any advice
She said that when she was asked to develop the character
the goal was to mix the horror genre with the Valley Girl stereotype
"If you want to make a unique character ..
you put one from 'Column A' and one from 'Column B,' put them together," said Peterson
"You're going to have to end up in L.A
that's where you've got to go to be an actress
Several questions from the crowd focused on the positive image Elvira conveys to young women who want to work in the mostly male horror genre
Peterson said that she would never allow her character to be rescued by a man
"I would get myself out of trouble," she said
"That was kind of a line I drew in the sand
I would still count myself as a super staunch feminist."
Peterson said she would love to work on more projects with Marvel
after creating an Elvira comic book series
She's trying to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and she may ask her fans for donations to raise the $30,000 fee

Discover a stunning world of remote mountains infused with thousands of years of Japanese spiritual beliefs when exploring barely-touristed Tottori Prefecture. The ancient shrines and temples, local myths, and hiking paths of Mt. Daisen and Mt. Mitoku revealed long forgotten Japan
Mitoku & Japan’s Most Dangerous National Monument
A vertical cliff on Mt. Mitoku grasps Japan’s “most dangerous national monument,” which is how government tourism officials describe a wooden temple whose actual name is Nageiredo
Nageiredo balances on roughly hewn timber stilts on the edge of a cave in the middle of a craggy precipice
No one knows who constructed this unique cultural artifact and how they built it 1,300 years ago
A local legend explains that a monk with mystical powers threw the temple onto the mountainside
Mere humans cannot get closer than approximately fifty meters
Nageiredo exists for the sole use of mountain gods
You need not be a godlike hiker to visit it
but out-of-shape or acrophobic travelers should think twice before attempting to approach Nageiredo
Scaling the steep trail often requires grasping winding tree roots
The earthen path is slippery in many places
climbers have broken bones or died after slipping off trails—but the climb is worth the risk
You’ll pass through the same invigorating mountainous forest habitat that monks and pilgrims have been traveling since the year 706 when Priest En No Gyoja founded Mt
Mitoku became active centers of Shugen-do in Western Japan
Sometimes simplistically described as a “mountain religion,” Shugen-do uniquely combines Buddhism
Shugen-do priests since the first millennium have embraced ascetic practices
Many rejected materialism and lived austerely in the mountains
Meditating under waterfalls during winter was common—some ascetic Buddhists today still do
Shugen-do priests were also formidable warriors who protected their mountains
and other sacred spots from opposing religious factions as well as the ravages of industry
To embark on a pursuit of spiritual purity or to just enjoy the incredible vistas and nature of Mt. Mitoku, begin your trek at Sanbutsuji Temple
located an hour drive from tiny Tottori Airport
explains that focusing on nature is like experiencing Zen
He advised visitors to go to the mountain to show appreciation and give thanks
repent!) “Rokkon shojo” (Purify the six senses!) as they move up the mountain
a gatekeeper at the entrance will inspect your shoe soles
and in inclement weather are all forbidden
For seven hundred yen (about six US dollars)
which one hiker swore gripped the path more firmly than modern hiking boots
you will miss the stories that weave history and the forest trail you walk
bordered with carved stone religious statues covered with years of green moss
A guide will teach the proper way to swing a wooden beam into the side of a person-sized bell suspended along the path by thick crossbeams
The sonorous vibrations inform the mountain gods that you are approaching—striking the bell is great fun
How monks carried a two-ton bell to one of the high mountain temples along the route is an unfathomable mystery
British ex-pat Richard Pearce, now a Tottori resident and expert on local folklore and nature, enjoys introducing English speaking visitors to the mysterious, sacred, and natural treasures of Mt. Mitoku. Pearce also conducts snowshoeing tours (richard@bushidojapan.com)
The trail ends at the vertiginous 90-degree bluff where Nageiredo Temple is impossibly perched
only expert rock climbers could enter this national treasure of Japan
look around at the scenery of undulating mountains and valleys
and snap some pics before carefully descending
try the Tottori après workout activity of soaking aching muscles in a steamy hot spring and then restore your energy with succulent crab and other seafood from the blue depths of the nearby sea and with mouthwatering yellow pears
and colorful produce from local farms and fields
The nearby hot spring town called Misasa Onsen includes enchanting cobblestone lanes
Misasa Onsen is a great place to let your hair down—Japanese style
Both men and women can enjoy river viewing and bathing nude inside of a highly visible outdoor rock-lined bath next to the town`s central bridge
After climbing in the footsteps of ascetic monks
you might want to experience other aspects of Japanese culture—the hedonistic practices of luxuriating in thermal mineral water and stuffing oneself with gourmet meals
Ryokan Ohashi
is a nationally registered cultural property
Master artisans used timber from neighboring forests
Townspeople have built or renovated luxurious ryokan alongside Misasa’s gently splashing river
and the romantic calls of night birds and frogs slip between the panes of glass that separate guests in their warm rooms from the night air
Don a loose Japanese yukata (a light gown) and walk through the luxurious hotel to the baths
men are asked to bathe in one bathing area while the other is for women
the designations change so that men and women can enjoy both areas during their stay
A steamy indoor room with rocky baths is one bathing section
The other has indoor baths and an outdoor bath made of aromatic cypress
Both facilities are spacious and luxurious
hotel staff will lay traditional soft Japanese futons on the floor of your room
feast on the gourmet art of Ryokan Ohashi’s top chef
who has received some of Japan’s highest awards for Japanese cuisine
Choose to enjoy your meal in your spacious room or to dine in private grand and elegant banquet rooms
waitstaff briefly extinguish the lights before carrying illuminated bowls of fresh crab to your table
the glowing bowls symbolize fishing boats drifting at night on black seas
is soon restored so you can savor a seemingly endless selection of exquisite Japanese dishes with your eyes and mouth
you must face difficult choices: walk along the river
or eat more local dishes. You could also go hiking or snowshoeing with guide Richard Pierce in the nearby fields
Less than two hours away by car, Mt. Daisen presents another fantastic option
gently ascending slopes soar from an almost round base to the 5,672-feet-high crown of pure white snow
In autumn expect a kaleidoscope of fall colors
Daisen’s history and culture include nature protection
which even applied to the emperor of Japan
and other locals feared a demon that guarded the mountain
Stories said it would tear intruders apart with its sharp beak
The demon served gods that lived in the crown of the mountain
just four Shinto priests a year were allowed to climb to Mt.Daisen`s peak
but this was permitted only for a religious ceremony named Oyama No Mohitori
where at a sacred pond they collected medicinal herbs and filled the buckets with water
They carried the holy water downhill to Ogamiyama Jinja
an ancient shrine built for worshipping Mt
Shinto priests today continue the water collecting ceremony every July 15
Their followers built over 100 Buddhist temples
Thousands of warrior monks resided in and around Daisen Town
many Buddhist temples across Japan were burned during a period of government persecution of Buddhism
a Japanese newspaper company sent an expedition to Daisen’s summit
filled with wild animals and imagined mythical beasts
hiking and snowshoeing trails connect the scraggly rocky peaks of volcanic Mt
Just 100 residents live in Daisen Town today
The small number of remaining shrines and temples are invaluable cultural treasures in the middle of alpine meadows
waterfalls and rivers that you can drink from
and almost certainly the most abundant natural beech and cedar forests in Western Japan
and the monk might even take you on a snowshoe trip around Daisen Temple and Ogamiyama Shrine
and melted snow that sparkles and slides down Mt
Sainokawara was known as the river that separated earth and heaven
To protect the spirits of recently departed children who were in limbo between heaven and earth
parents built triangular cairns with riverbank stones
you might discover a just-built riverside rock cairn with a child’s doll or toy left at the apex
Winter drops layers of fluffy white snow on the dark brown thatched roofs of centuries-old weather-worn wooden temples and shrines
Trails curve around snow-bent birch trees in woods so silent that you can hear snowflakes brushing your jacket
You might think that the mountain is like a vast open chapel. You can feel why people worshipped Mt
Considering it’s small population, Daisen Town has several impressive snowshoeing guides and winter sports facilities. Mr. Kuruma is recommended because of his encyclopedic knowledge of local flora and fauna. Ask for him at the Daisen Information Center (81 0859-52-2502). The name of largest outdoor sports company in the area is Mori-no-Kuni
Daisen is included within the much larger Daisen-Oki National Park
bicycle trails and much more for outdoor sports enthusiasts
Many regions of Japan offer the same opportunities for sports
but only remote Tottori prefecture provides these activities in the midst of such a rich physical environment and cultural heritage
To experience the mountains of Tottori, book a flight to Japan
