Brown understands the challenges of homelessness firsthand she believes this situation presents different concerns and the mental health of those living in the encampment "I'm just a concerned citizen who wants this to be cleared up," Brown said "This issue right here is getting out of hand Something needs to be done about it," Brown said This story was reported by a journalist and has been converted to this platform with the assistance of AI Our editorial team verifies all reporting on all platforms for fairness and accuracy Metrics details Miyoshi myopathy/dysferlinopathy (MMD) is a rare muscle disease caused by DYSF gene mutations the impact of MMD-causing DYSF variants on brain structure and function remains unexplored we utilized magnetic resonance (MR) modalities (MR volumetry and 31P MR spectroscopy) in a family with seven children The MMD siblings showed distinct differences from healthy controls: (1) a significant (p < 0.001) right-sided volume asymmetry (+ 232 mm3) of the inferior lateral ventricles; and (2) a significant (p < 0.001) decrease in [Mg2+] along with a modified energy metabolism profile and altered membrane turnover in the hippocampus and motor and premotor cortices and membrane turnover measures returned to those of healthy relatives after a month of 400 mg/day magnesium supplementation This work is the first to describe anatomical and functional abnormalities characteristic of neurodegeneration in the MMD brain we call for further examination of brain functions in larger cohorts of MMD patients and testing of magnesium supplementation which has proven to be an effective corrective approach in our study no therapeutic strategy is currently available for halting the progress of MMD we have studied a family with nine members of whom four siblings are compound heterozygotes comprising a pair of non-identical DYSF mutant alleles and have been diagnosed with MMD Given the potential role of dysferlin in brain physiology and the complete lack of knowledge regarding the effects of mutated DYSF on the brain of MMD patients our objectives have been: (1) to elucidate anatomical features of the brains of MMD patients and their healthy relatives; (2) to examine the status of phospho-metabolites and [Mg2+] in the hippocampus (critical function in memory and cognition) and in the premotor and motor cortices (areas involved in regulation and execution of voluntary movements) Pedigree of the family with four siblings affected by Miyoshi myopathy/dysferlinopathy (MMD) and phenotypic characteristics of selected patients (A) Affected individuals are compound heterozygotes carrying mutations c.4076 T > C and c.2864 + 1dupG in the gene DYSF encoding for dysferlin (B) A prominent atrophy of the calves and muscles of the lower limbs is characteristic of MMD (index patient F: III) (C) Transversal T2 MRI (upper panel; patient F: VII) depicting the symmetrical pathological signal corresponding to a combined interstitial edema and fat remodeling in muscles of both thighs except musculus gracilis T2 MRI with the fat signal suppression (lower panel; patient F: VII) hallmarked with fatty remodeling of the muscles with a maximum in the lateral vastus of both m there are visible edematous infiltrations (hyperintense zones) each member of the family has passed a battery of cognitive tests conducted by a licensed clinical psychologist A moderate cognitive abnormality of mnestic and executive functions was inferred in two MMD siblings (F: IV F: VII) with z-scores below (≤ − 1.5) the population normative average aligned with age and years of schooling The other two MMD siblings (F: I and F: III) have not been found to have any cognitive deficits The index of the depresivity level and somatic signs of the patient F: IV indicated she was suffering from mild depression Imaging of dysferlin in bioptic samples of musculus soleus (A) Confocal imaging of dysferlin in transversal and longitudinal sections prepared from biopsies of the musculus soleus of the MMD patient (F: VII) the healthy heterozygote carrying mutation DYSF c.2864 + 1dupG (F: V) and the healthy heterozygote carrying mutation DYSF c.4076 T > C (P1: I) (B) The left panel depicts a quantitative comparison of the strengths of the dysferlin signal in samples from the m the healthy heterozygote carrying mutation DYSF c.2864 + 1dupG (F: V and the healthy heterozygote carrying mutation DYSF c.4076 T > C (P1: I The right panel depicts a quantitative comparison of the strengths of the dysferlin signal normalized to the signal of actin in the same samples (C) Hematoxylin and eosin and anti-dysferlin immunohistochemical staining of m soleus biopsy sections from MMD patient (F: VII) and unrelated control proband Phenomena like those seen with the confocal microscopy were observed when the musculus soleus biopsy sample of the compound heterozygote F: VII was examined by immunohistochemistry and compared with the biopsy sample of the musculus soleus of a healthy non-related subject (Fig. 2C) hematoxylin and eosin staining of a muscle biopsy sample of F: VII revealed severe architectural alterations of the musculus soleus comprising: (1) abnormalities in the size of muscle fibers variably atrophic fibers of irregular shapes dispersed in the field of fibrosis irregularly hypereosinophilic fibers occurring individually and in small clusters; and (2) pyknotic some with bizarre shapes and some being clustered No significant signs of inflammation were detected we analyzed the volumes of: (1) brain structures in the right and left hemispheres; (2) gray matter (GM)/white matter (WM) segments with hemisphere distribution; (3) specific brain areas such as the ventricles and corpus callosum; and (4) total brain volumes The null hypothesis of the equality of population medians was tested for MMD patients and control family members to determine the brain structures or regions of interest among all 63 analyzed brain regions The right inferior lateral ventricle (ILV) was found to be the area of major interest with an effect size of 1 and a Mann–Whitney U test p value of 0.016 as determined by rank biserial correlation The second-most different region was found to be the left insula GM (rank biserial correlation: effect size of 0.9; p = 0.032) We carried out the right ILV analyses after pre-screening Volume of right inferior lateral ventricles in MMD patients (A) Age-correlation with volumes of right inferior lateral ventricles (rILV) in patients (red dots; 2 brothers and 2 sisters; mean age ± SD: 35 ± 5 years) control family members (pastel orange dots; 64-year-old father and 2 brothers and 1 sister at mean age of 33 ± 5 years) and unrelated volunteers (green dots; younger volunteers: 5 men and 5 women at mean age of 35 ± 4 years and older volunteers: 5 men and 5 women at mean age of 60 ± 2 years) (B) ROC curve with AUC and 95% CI for the imbalanced machine-learning Random Forest algorithm with rILV volume and age being predictors of the group (MMD patients/healthy unrelated volunteers) We therefore wondered whether the absence of wild-type dysferlin in the brains of MMD patients affected the phospho-metabolites involved in energy homeostasis and membrane turnover in the hippocampus (anatomical unit undergoing changes in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and severe atrophy in Alzheimer's types of dementia) and in the motor and premotor cortices (cortical areas crucial for compensatory reprogramming of movement patterns in patients with muscle diseases) Interaction plots for 31P MRS metabolite ratios and [Mg2+] in hippocampus and premotor and motor cortices of MMD patients (before and after Mg supplementation) and control family members Plots of marginal means for 31P MRS metabolic ratios and [Mg2+] in the hippocampus motor and premotor cortices of MMD patients before and after the one-month Mg supplementation period (red; n = 4) and control family members (green; n = 5) Dots in vertical bar represent marginal means In comparison with the baseline (before Mg supplementation) [Mg2+] in the hippocampus each) increase of [Mg2+] in these areas after Mg supplementation a significantly increased mean level after the Mg supplementation relative to the pre-treatment mean level was found for PCr/ATP in the motor cortex (p = 0.032) and for PCr/Pi in the motor cortex (p = 0.023) and in the hippocampus (p = 0.005) A decrease was found for Pi/ATP in the hippocampus (p = 0.002) a significant decrease after the Mg-supplementation treatment of MMD patients was found for PME/PCr and PME/PDE in the motor cortex (p = 0.011 and PME/PDE in the premotor cortex (p = 0.011 A significant increase was found for PDE/ATP only in the motor cortex (p = 0.019) We also examined the effect of Mg-supplementation on the volume of the right ILV in MMD patients (Supplementary Figure S2) but no effect was detected (estimated difference 15 mm3 Random Forest machine learning analyses of 31P MRS data An imbalanced Random Forest machine learning algorithm was trained on the 31P MRS data to predict the group (MMD patients before Mg supplementation control family members) with metabolites and brain region (hippocampus Panel A depicts importance (predictive power) of used predictors in the whole group and in the subgroup of healthy control family members ROC curve with AUC and 95% CI (panel B) is based on Out-Of-Bag data nothing is known about the possible impact of pathogenic MMD-causing DYSF mutations on the structural and functional integrity of the brain We have therefore used both MRI and MRS technologies to study this aspect of the brain it remains possible that right-sided ILV asymmetry is unrelated to the primary diagnosis of MMD; however considering that all the MMD patients in our family had prominent right-sided ILV asymmetry and the group of unrelated healthy volunteers had a significant left-sided ILV volume asymmetry two of the MMD siblings in our study have been diagnosed with a moderate cognitive abnormality of mnestic and executive functions our findings make it imperative to closely monitor the psychological status and cognitive performance of MMD patients The fatty replacement of muscles characteristic of MMD results in a notably high proportion of fat in the overall body composition of MMD patients which likely contributes to their hypomagnesemia Mg supplementation should be considered in the treatment plan of MMD patients to lower the risk of neurodegeneration and cognitive decline These observations clearly link Mg2+ homeostasis and membrane turnover The Mg supplementation of MMD patients had a remarkably strong corrective effect on the low values of PCr/ATP and PCr/Pi and to some extend also on high values of Pi/ATP these values being adjusted to levels comparable with those of control family members Mg supplementation might prevent and/or correct the energy imbalance in the brains of MMD patients We have identified a large family with four siblings affected by MMD These siblings are compound heterozygotes carrying an allele of the dysferlin gene with the previously described mutation c.4076 T > C and an allele with the newly identified mutation c.2864 + 1dupG we have found that: (1) the newly identified mutant DYSF variant c.2864 + 1dupG is pathogenic Our findings substantiate MMD as being a far more complex disease than previously thought The observed/measured structural and metabolic clinically relevant phenomena seen in MMD brains might be specific to the mutations DYSF c.2864 + 1dupG and/or its combination with DYSF c.4076 T > C (p.Leu1359Pro) and might not be present in MMD patients with other configurations of DYSF mutations a similar study should be performed with a heterogeneous cohort of MMD patients Another limitation is the small sample size The rarity of this disease in our region hampers the performance of similar research on a larger cohort of such patients An international consortium thus needs to be assembled focusing on the examination of the brain structure was obtained from the Ethics Committee at Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin at Comenius University in Bratislava The procedures used in this study adhere to the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki Informed consent was obtained from all participants included in the study twenty healthy unrelated volunteers were recruited with no history of muscle disease and neurodegenerative disease they were divided into two sub-cohorts: (1) younger volunteers (5 M/5F aged 35 ± 4 years) and (2) older volunteers (5 M/5F 20 μm transverse and longitudinal cryosections of musculus soleus biopsy samples obtained from F: VII (carrying both mutations) F: V (carrying the c.2864 + 1dupG mutation) and P: I (carrying the c.4076 T > C mutation) were stained according to the standard protocol supplemented with the biotin-streptavidin signal amplification system (Thermo Fisher Scientific) after being washed (3 × 10 min) in 50 mL 1 × PBS to improve sensitivity by reducing nonspecific background the cryosections were blocked and permeabilized with 200 μL blocking solution (4% goat serum 0.2% Triton in 1 × PBS) for 90 min at room temperature (RT) Incubation with primary antibody was performed overnight in a humidity chamber at 4 °C and 200 μL solution was used for each slide the slides were incubated with 200 μL 1% BSA/PBS without primary antibodies being added Extensive washing (3 × 10 min) with 50 mL PBS at RT was followed by the incubation of slides with secondary antibodies diluted in PBS in a humidity chamber for 90 min at RT Slides were then again washed (3 × 10 min) in 50 mL PBS on a shaker and subsequently incubated for 90 min at RT in a humidity chamber with Streptavidin:Alexa Fluor 647 conjugate (Thermo Fisher Scientific; Cat# S-21374; RRID:AB_2336066; dil: 1:100) diluted in PBS the slides were briefly washed with PBS followed by incubation in 300 nM DAPI for 10 min in RT and dark the slides were washed (3 × 10 min) in 50 mL PBS on a shaker mounted in mounting medium (Vectashield H-1000 Primary antibodies: recombinant anti-dysferlin (rabbit; Abcam United Kingdom; Cat# ab124684; RRID: AB_10976241; dil: 1:200); anti-β-actin monoclonal antibody (mouse; Thermo Fisher Scientific; Cat# 15G5A11/E2; RRID: AB_2536844; dil: 1:2000) Secondary antibodies: goat anti-rabbit IgG (H + L) cross-adsorbed secondary antibody Biotin-XX (Thermo Fisher Scientific; Cat# B2770; RRID: AB_1500688; dil: 1:100) and goat anti-mouse IgG (H + L) highly cross-adsorbed secondary antibody Alexa Fluor Plus 555 (Thermo Fisher Scientific/Invitrogen; Cat# A32727; RRID: AB_2633276; dil: 1:100) For a more detailed representation of the differences in individual samples fluorescence intensity analysis of dysferlin and actin staining was performed using Zeiss Zen Blue software The analysis was performed on raw data; thus we analyzed the fluorescence intensity regardless of postprocessing or the size and shape of the area Seven regions were randomly selected from each field of view we analyzed 100 regions from each sample type Transverse cryosections of musculus soleus biopsy obtained from F: VII (carrying both mutations) were hematoxylin–eosin-stained in a Tissue-Tek Prisma® Plus automated slide stainer (Sakura Finetek slides were incubated in xylene twice (5 min and 3 min) followed by a 3 min incubation in 96% ethanol and a 3 min incubation in 70% ethanol Slides were washed in running water (3 min) before incubation in Meyer’s hematoxyline solution (5 min) Slides were then washed in running water for 5 min the slides were stained with 1% eosine (4 min) and washed in running water (1 min) fixatives and clearing agent were applied: 96% ethanol (2 × 30 s) Mounting has been performed with Canada balsam (Merck Hematoxylin–Eosin-stained preparates were imaged with the Zeiss Axio Imager 2 microscope platform (Carl Zeiss) Transverse cryosections of the snap frozen musculus soleus biopsy obtained from F: VII (carrying both mutations) and an unrelated control were prepared according to certified protocol 208 (22 2023) U ultraView DAB (v1.02.0018) retrievable from Unilabs Slovakia s.r.o Dysferlin immunodecorated preparates were visualized with the Zeiss Axio Imager 2 microscope platform (Carl Zeiss) Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) was performed using a boxplot overlaid with a swarmplot a quantile–quantile plot with a 95% confidence band constructed by bootstrap Any association between two continuous variables was explored using a scatterplot after treatment) were visualized by the spaghettiplot The anthropometric and biochemical data collected before and after Mg treatment were analyzed by the Linear Mixed Regression (LMR) model M1 of the following form: response ~ treatment + group + gender + age + (1|id) where treatment is a factor with levels before Mg supplementation after Mg supplementation; group is a factor with levels fCON (control family members) PAT (patients); gender is a factor with levels F Each LMR was subjected to standard diagnostics using the quantile residuals Estimated marginal means were obtained by the fitted LMR and post-hoc custom contrast comparisons were performed with p-values adjusted by the Benjamin-Hochberg method Data on fluorescence intensity were modeled by the Repeated measures ANOVA which was implemented by the LMR model M2 of the following form: response ~ subject + (1|subject) + (1|subject:id) where response is the square-root transformed fluorescence intensity and subject is factor with three levels (F: VII F: V and P: I) and id is the identifier of 101 regions The square-root transformation was used to bring the fluorescence intensity distribution closer to gaussian estimated marginal means of back-transformed intensities were computed for the three subjects The post-hoc p-values were adjusted by the Tukey method The marginal means were visualized by the interaction plot To identify differences in the target brain volumes (measured at 1.5 Tesla) between MMD patients and unrelated volunteers a three-way repeated-measures non-homogeneous ANOVA with covariates (age gender) was fitted to the data by using the LMR model M3 of volume with group age and gender as predictors (fixed effects) and subject identity (id) as the random effect variable the model M3 was volume ~ 1 + side*group + gender + age:side:gender + (1|id) with the variance function varIdent (form =  ~ 1 | side*group) Separate slopes for the dependence of volume on age was assumed for side and gender interaction The effect size was quantified by the Marginal R2 and the Conditional R2 The fitted model was subjected to the standard diagnostics Marginal means were computed based on the fitted model the estimates of the difference in volume were computed and tested with the Benjamini–Hochberg adjustment of p-values An interaction plot with a 95% CI was used to visualize the estimated marginal means obtained from the linear mixed model A detailed look at the association of the volume of right ILV with age for MMD patients control family members and unrelated volunteers was obtained by the linear regression model M4 (volume_right_ILV ~ group + age + age:group) with the interaction of age and group The model was fitted to the data by Ordinary Least Squares Standard diagnostics of the fit suggested the presence of a high leverage point and an outlier the model was fitted to the data by using a robust regression method A robust ANOVA deviance test suggested that the interaction term could be excluded from the model (p value 0.850) To analyze differences in the target brain volumes acquired at 1.5 Tesla and 3 Tesla (two measurements; averaged values were analyzed) in MMD patients and control family members we used the cross-plots between the two measurement modalities The Bland–Altman plot was used to assess and quantify the agreement between these two methods Proportional bias and Limits of Agreement were computed together with their 95% CI To quantify the effect of Mg supplementation on target brain volume changes (measured at 1.5 Tesla) in MMD patients normality was first assessed using the quantile–quantile plot with the 95% confidence band constructed by bootstrap the Welch two-sample paired t-test was used to test the null hypothesis that the population mean of the volume before and after treatment were the same The effect size was quantified by Cohen’s d unrelated volunteers) two imbalanced Random Forest machine learning algorithms were trained using the age and volume of the right ILV as predictors The Out-Of-Bag-based ROC curve was used to evaluate predictive power 95% confidence band for ROC was constructed by bootstrap Alternations in 31P MRS parameters between MMD patients and control family members were analyzed with a repeated-measures non-homogeneous ANOVA which was fitted to the data by using the linear mixed model of metabolite as the response and the region (hippocampus the model M5 was of the form metabolite ~ group + treatment*region + (1|id) with the variance function varIdent (form =  ~ 1 | group*treatment*area) and Pi/ATP data was excluded prior to fitting the respective model Fitted models were subjected to standard diagnostic analysis Post-hoc tests for a-priori specified custom contrasts were performed with the Kenward-Roger degrees of freedom and the Benjamini–Hochberg method of adjustment of the p-values was used afterwards An interaction plot with 95% CI was used to visualize the estimated marginal means obtained from the linear mixed model an imbalanced Random Forest machine learning algorithm was trained on the data to predict the group (MMD patients before treatment with 31P metabolites and region as the predictors The ROC curve was based on the Out-Of-Bag data Data and RNotebook script to produce the html reports which are stored at Mendeley data repository (Doi: https://doi.org/10.17632/nz45zk5g6z.1) are available upon reasonable request from the corresponding author. Yuzu Miyoshi joins the Huskers as a sophomore 1 singles and doubles as a freshman at Sophia University in Japan and being named the 2022 player of the year Miyoshi joins the Big Red with three years of eligibility remaining she competed in the Kanto Junior Tennis Championship and was named Japan Junior Tennis Tour Champions - Champion “I’m super excited to add Yuzu to our Husker family,” Head Coach German Dalmagro said “She’s very talented and eager to get to work and we are very fortunate she chose us to help her with her development I know she will make our team better on and off the court Looking forward to having her here this fall.” “The coaches and the teammates are a great fit for me and Nebraska has the best tennis facilities,” Miyoshi said “I believe Nebraska would be the best environment where I can improve my tennis.” Miyoshi is the daughter of Ichiro and Tamae Miyoshi who plays on the men’s tennis team at the University of Illinois Miyoshi plans to pursue Environmental & Sustainability Studies at Nebraska October 25, 2024 | Science A research team led by Assistant Professor Makoto Miyoshi of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) has independently re-analyzed observation data of the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy obtained and published by the international joint observation project Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) They found that the structure is slightly elongated in the east-west direction This research takes a new look at the publicly available EHT data and demonstrates the scientific process in which the certainty of the answer increases as different researchers continue to examine and discuss a theory contains more than 100 billion sun-like stars There are countless such large galaxies in the Universe most of which are thought to have supermassive black holes at their centers with masses millions to billions of times that of the Sun The Milky Way Galaxy also has a supermassive black hole at its center making it impossible to see the supermassive black hole itself but analysis of stars circling the black hole at high speed indicates that Sagittarius A* has a mass approximately 4 million times that of the Sun we can obtain clues to the nature of the invisible black hole The EHT observed Sagittarius A* in 2017 with a network of eight ground-based radio telescopes using a technique known as radio interferometry to combine the results from the various telescopes The results of these observations were published in 2022 including an image of a bright ring structure surrounding a central dark region data from observations linking several widely-separated radio telescopes contain many gaps in the completeness so special algorithms are used to construct an image from the data the team applied widely-used traditional methods to EHT data as opposed to the EHT’s own original analysis method “Our image is slightly elongated in the east-west direction and the eastern half is brighter than the western half We think this appearance means the accretion disk surrounding the black hole is rotating.” The EHT’s observational data and analysis methods are freely available and many researchers have validated the results of EHT analysis This research is also part of these regular verification activities Radio interferometry connecting telescopes across the globe is a developing technology and research on data analysis and image processing is ongoing incorporating knowledge from statistics and other related disciplines The structures presented in this research differ from the results of the EHT team but both are plausible structures derived from the data using the respective methods The EHT plays an important role in black hole research by soliciting independent verification and providing open data for verification It is hoped that a more reliable picture of Sagittarius A* will emerge from active discussion by researchers based on improved analysis methods and data from follow-up observations carried out since 2018 Return to News Home Next: Supercomputer “ATERUI III” Opens New Era of Simulation Astronomy Previous: Ceremony Held creating solutions to bring our county rate down Watch Fort Myers Community Correspondent Miyoshi Price explain potential solutions to bring the rate down: According to the community health needs assessmentsponsored by Lee Health there were 20.8 births to teenage girls per 1,000 women ages 15 to 19 Price asked what's being done to bring the numbers down and support advocacy are always important to advocate for young people so that they know what their rights are and what resources are available to them," Rackley-Meadows said "It is equally important to reduce barriers and obstacles to them getting the resources that they need." She plans to expand because of the growing need and it's not one of those things where the program is something that is saying endorsing teen pregnancy," Rackley-Meadows said because we're not endorsing teen pregnancy you are creating an environment where people can learn and they can grow." of the first-ever image showing the supermassive black hole that lies at the heart of our galaxy the findings of the researchers from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society would indicate that the image may not be a true reflection of the black hole's appearance The original image was released in 2022 by an international team known as the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration (EHTC) which involves hundreds of scientists from around the world It was created based on observations conducted in 2017 by a network of eight ground-based radio telescopes The EHTC image of Sagittarius A*—the black hole at the center of the Milky Way—shows a dark central region (the black hole's shadow) surrounded by a bright ring of light (called the accretion disk) that is the result of superheated gas being accelerated by extreme gravitational forces It should be noted that the image has been validated by many researchers paints a slightly different picture of what the black hole which is based on a reanalysis of the EHTC data Miyoshi and his colleagues argue that part of the black hole's appearance in the original image may actually be an artifact resulting from the process of its creation "Our image is slightly elongated in the east-west direction and the eastern half is brighter than the western half," Miyoshi said in a Royal Astronomical Society press release "We hypothesize that the ring image resulted from errors during EHT's imaging analysis and that part of it was an artifact rather than the actual astronomical structure." we confirm that the EHT array has the power to find black hole features that we could not see until now," Miyoshi told Newsweek Newsweek contacted members of the EHTC, who provided a collective response from the consortium addressing the findings of the recent Miyoshi et al stating that it contains several "errors" in its analysis the EHTC published the first image of the black hole in the Milky Way Galactic Center The image shows a ring-like structure with a central depression consistent with the predictions of Einstein's theory of general relativity," the statement read "The image was the result of multiple analyses.. each with independent assumptions and associated systematics These methods were extensively verified through simulations that mimicked the raw data in detail The results were found to be consistent over two separate days of observations." independent analysis and interpretation of our published results We publish detailed descriptions of our methods as well as raw data data products and analysis scripts to facilitate transparency A recently published re-analysis [the Miyoshi et al paper] claims to identify flaws in the EHTC analysis and provides a new image that differs from the EHTC result EHTC experts find numerous errors in the M24 analysis.. EHTC experts find numerous mischaracterizations of EHTC methodologies and results." We look forward to publishing rigorous and thorough analyses of new observations with improved image fidelity that will further test the physics and astrophysics of black holes," the statement said Black holes are regions of space-time where gravity is so extreme that nothing black holes form as the remnants of stars that died in cataclysmic cosmic explosions known as supernovas At the center of a black hole lies the singularity—a point where gravity is predicted to be infinite and the laws of physics as we know them break down Surrounding this is a region known as the event horizon—the boundary beyond which nothing can escape because of the extreme gravitational pull The event horizon is named as such because it is impossible to observe any event taking place inside it Supermassive black holes can have masses ranging from millions to billions of solar masses Scientists believe that most large galaxies have supermassive black holes like Sagittarius A* at their centers Do you have a tip on a science story that Newsweek should be covering ET: This article was updated with comment from Makoto Miyoshi and a statement provided by the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration Miyoshi, M., Kato, Y., & Makino, J. The accretion disk is filled with superheated material 'circling the drain' as it were funneling into the 4-million-solar-mass black hole friction and the action of magnetic fields heat the material mostly in x-rays and visible light as well as giving off radio emissions Various factors also influence the shape of the accretion disk including the spin of the black hole itself as well as the angular momentum of the material The gravitational pull of the black hole also distorts our view of the accretion disk That sort of 'funhouse mirror' distortion makes it incredibly difficult to image either view of the disk's actual shape – the original EHT circular view or the NAOJ elongated view – could be accurate How did the teams come up with two slightly different views of Sgr A* using the same data "No telescope can capture an astronomical image perfectly," Miyoshi pointed out it turns out that interferometric data from the widely linked telescopes can have gaps scientists have to use special techniques to construct a complete image Miyoshi's team published a paper describing their results they propose that the ring structure in the 2022 image released by EHT is an artifact caused by the bumpy point-spread function (PSF) of the EHT data The PSF describes how an imaging system deals with a point source in the region it's looking at It helps give a measure of the amount of blurring that occurs because of imperfections in the optics (or in this case it had problems with 'filling' in the gaps The NAOJ team reanalyzed the data and used a different mapping method to smooth over the gaps in the data That resulted in an elongated shape for the Sgr A* accretion disk One-half of the disk is brighter and they suggest it's due to a Doppler boost as the disk rotates rapidly They suggest that the newly analyzed data and elongated image shows a portion of the disk that lies a few Schwarzschild radii away from the black hole This reanalysis should help contribute to a better understanding of what the Sgr A* accretion disk actually looks like The EHT study of Sgr A* resulting in the 2022 image release was the first detailed attempt to map the region around the black hole The EHT consortium is working on improvements to produce better and more detailed interferometry images of this and other black holes Follow-up studies should help fill in any gaps in the observations of the accretion disk detailed studies of the near environment around the black hole should give more clues to the black hole hidden inside the disk This article was originally published by Universe Today Zeidler confirmed that thigh problems will sideline Miyoshi tomorrow whilst speaking at his Friday presser While a specific replacement was not named it's likely that Moritiz Broschinski will move back up to the lead striker position Dani de Wit - whom Zeidler specifically discussed at the press conference - could also move up an axis with captain Anthony Losilla getting the nod in midfield.  “Toto [Losilla] is an icon at VfL,” Zeidler said "we talk to each other very often and well even if he hasn't been able to prove that with us yet We have to work on him getting more shots on target in goal-scoring positions."  Miyoshi Osorio-Rosa was only weeks away from graduating nursing school this spring at age 49 when she and her grown daughter found themselves on the third-story fire escape of their apartment building choking back smoke billowing from a neighbor's apartment When they finally made it down and the panic had subsided Miyoshi's thoughts turned to another fear: Would the fire derail the past two years she spent commuting five hours each day between her home in Brooklyn and Felician University in Parsippany Would it jeopardize the months of clinical work she put in at New Jersey hospitals Would it destroy a lifelong dream that was postponed by teenage pregnancy and raising four children as a young mother "The only thing I could think about was getting through the next few weeks," Miyoshi said ‘Finish school and then process everything.’” Miyoshi isn't your typical nursing student Middle-aged with children in their 20s and 30s she quit her two-decade job as a medical assistant to go to school full time in an intense expedited program to obtain a nursing degree where 12-hour days in the classroom and hospital turned into 16 or 17 hour days given her nightmarish commute "The commute alone was something I don't think many of us could have overcome," said Sabratha Thomas director of Felician's Nursing Academic Services "Add to that the fire and you're just stunned at what Miyoshi has been able to do." Those plans changed when she became pregnant as a teenager and by her mid-20s was the mother of four children with only a high school degree to her name Miyoshi never gave up the dream of working in health care She became a medical assistant at an OBGYN practice she enrolled at a community college part time while she was in her 30s and eventually made her way to Hunter College in New York it took Miyoshi 10 years to get her degree in human biology It was an accomplishment and Miyoshi was proud After she had a tough time getting into highly-competitive physician assistant programs, Miyoshi focused on nursing — one of the biggest areas of need in health care because of an expanding pool of older patients from the baby boom bubble and a mass defection of nurses during and after the COVID-19 pandemic about a third of nurses left hospital care from 2020 to 2022 for either less stressful or more lucrative jobs according to a survey by the state's biggest health care union More: Doctors vs. nurses: NJ at heart of debate over who can treat patients, write prescriptions a commercial popped up for Felician's accelerated nursing program The program began with a new group of students three times during the year so she could enroll right away And it would take less than two years to complete The campus was in Parsippany — and Miyoshi didn’t have a car School administrators told her it was going to be intense — four years worth of instruction and practice packed into 16 months Miyoshi quit her job and began researching how to get to school without a car “It wasn’t like I was still in my 20s and had all this time ahead of me,” she said I didn’t want to waste another year trying to get into a closer school.” but Miyoshi figured out a system that worked and she would trek an hour by subway to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan Bus options to New Jersey were limited — at that time of day most NJ Transit buses are still making their way to New York But she found a reliable line that would leave Port Authority at 6:10 a.m and drop her at the Willowbrook Mall in Wayne she would book an Uber to take her the final 10 miles to Felician I had one minute to spare before class,” Miyoshi said “And I still had to get up to the fifth-floor classroom.” She made that commute three days a week for four months during torrential late-summer rainstorms and dark freezing mornings when the sun was barely above the horizon by the time she got to campus She used the commuting time to catch some sleep when she could she began clinical training at night at Morristown Medical Center and St On nights when her shifts ended at 11 p.m. Miyoshi booked a nearby hotel room so she could be at class on time the next day The third semester produced a bigger commuting challenge — a 6:30 a.m “There are no buses running that early to New Jersey on a Sunday,” she said So she would pay $100 or more for an Uber from Brooklyn to Morris County A reprieve came when a fellow Felician nursing student “You think about all the complaining people do with little inconveniences and here she is taking the subway an Uber and even paying for a hotel,” said Christine Mihal There were plenty of times Miyoshi broke down crying from the schoolwork I was going to tough it out no matter what.” Everything was supposed to get easier this spring. Miyoshi was on course to graduate with honors. Her nightmarish commutes would finally be over. And she was looking forward to starting a career at a time when nurses' salaries were rising significantly after she had returned home an hour before from a clinical shift Miyoshi smelled smoke in the apartment she shared with her daughter Amaryce Miyoshi opened her door into the third-floor hallway and saw flames went to a fire escape in the back of the apartment and called 911 They struggled to get down as black smoke billowed out of a neighbor’s window Miyoshi almost fell and lost the grip on the bird cages “We lost our birds but made it down to the yard,” she said Firefighters were on the scene within minutes and brought the fire under control Miyoshi and Amaryce were treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation Almost everything in the apartment was destroyed including her nursing books and an $80 poster board that Miyoshi had made to present a final paper to her class Friends, classmates and instructors rallied around her. More than one GoFundMe fundraiser began collecting money for the family. that they would help her to the academic finish line "We all knew about her commute and yet she still had time to be a mentor to so many of our younger students that everybody had so much respect and admiration for her when this happened," Thomas said "We weren't going to let the fire change her path." She was able to skip her poster board presentation and give it instead on a digital slideshow that survived the fire She was able to complete her clinical work and take all of her finals — studying with borrowed books Miyoshi paused when a question centered on what color traige tag someone with smoke inhalation would get "They gave me that when I was in the hospital." "To say we're proud of her is an understatement," Thomas said These days Miyoshi is moving between homes of relatives as she sorts out where she is going to live She keeps herself occupied by studying for her licensing exam she plans to go back to school yet again and become a nurse practitioner an advanced position that has some of the same responsibilities of a physician “I’m staying in New York,” she said with a laugh — A Fort Myers city council seat is up for grabs and two women are using the last few days leading up to the election to win your vote spoke with both candidates running for Ward 2 City Council about affordable housing Depending on your vote on November 5th, that open seat could be Jacquelyn McMiller or Diana Giraldo Giraldo says a balanced ratio of rental communities versus home ownership needs to be balanced "Home ownership is so important for us to really create the generational wealth," says Giraldo "It's really part of building the American dream and we want to make sure that the places that we're creating around the housing are providing equity to the community." needs to be added to the community as living spaces are built McMiller plans to increase funds through bond opportunities and organization connections She explained that she loves development and is open to being the middle person "The city of Fort Myers has an affordable housing trust fund that we're currently building and that was one of the ones that I fought for while I was involved with L.I.F.E.," says McMiller "So there's other areas that we can utilize." Fort Myers Police Chief Jason Fields told city council members that department research shows big trucks often cut through McGregor instead of using roads like SR-82 or US-41 That's why the council is considering an ordinance banning those trucks from using McGregor Here's what Chief Jason Fields said about enforcing it "We would have to follow a truck from either the north end of the south end all the way through then we can conduct a traffic stop or education," he explained He further discussed the number of construction sites that used heavy trucks for various materials He gave an example of a site south of the city off of McGregor "It's a new community being built," says Fields whether it's sand to raise or dirt to raise the elevation or equipment material We reached out to the contractor and the job site to figure out because we noticed that a lot of trucks were on McGregor And we did identify that this trucking company was providing equipment to this site and we did speak to them so they did have direction from the main company to take an alternate route." The ordinance would allow trucks to make drop-offs to businesses along the road but it would not allow them to go through traffic no semis," says Councilman Liston Bochette It doesn't mean that you don't get Amazon deliveries in your yard The council says an ordinance could be in effect by next week your Ft Myers Community Correspondent Miyoshi Price toured part of the city with Police Chief Jason Fields as he discussed the options his officers were using while still enforcing things like the city's no public sleeping ordinance Click to ride along with the Fort Myers Police Chief and your Fort Myers Community Correspondent Miyoshi Price as they talk about the homeless: "We won't be able to arrest our way out of it," said Chief Fields "We don't want the jails to become a homeless encampment." but also difficult approach: getting people connected to resources that could help Chief Fields said homelessness is not illegal "If they want to get off the street that night if they want a bed to stay in for that night and the long term," Chief Fields said his officers would provide transportation to places like the Salvation Army Those public spaces include areas like Clemente Park and Lions Park where Lee County's Housing Outreach and Treatment — or HOT— team enforces the new ordinance frequently Lee County's HOT Teams consist of a law enforcement officer and behavioral health professional Teams conduct street outreach to persons experiencing homelessness with the main goal of connecting individuals and families to housing and services and connect households with behavioral health and other supportive services and we also have them working with Lee County Human Veteran Services right now to get her into some type of transitional housing," said Chief Fields "You need a place to rest," said Shotmiller Shotmiller said he already sleeps in different places around the city "You might as well arrest me now because I have to camp," he said The Chief said this new enforcement push still hadn't resulted in any arrests The chief said every interaction with the homeless is recorded on body camera and because of their regular patrols and community interactions officers tend to know the homeless people by name Price did ask the chief whether he was seeing more success with this resource-focused approach we do have a chronic homeless population that is just unwilling to accept those resources or accept our help." — The Big Carlos Pass Bridge is back open after being closed for hours on Tuesday spoke with folks while the bridge was closed A concrete pile installed for the new bridge broke and hit the boon of a crane The Lee County Department of Transportation says the pile broke as it was being driven They also said nothing had hit the existing bridge The bridge was closed on Tuesday as a safety precaution and no changes have been made to the bridge project some people say they went out of their way to get home so we had to go all the way around," says Samuel "It took us an hour and a half to get home" Fox 4 was there Tuesday when the concrete pile was removed from the boon of the crane — Employers say we're looking at a healthy labor market as we move into the new year I'm your Fort Myers community correspondent I spoke with an expert economist about what we're seeing regarding job searching in southwest Florida Watch Fort Myers Community Correspondent Miyoshi Price's report on the labor market in SWFL: "It's been a little difficult," says Alvis Peguero who attended a Florida Job Link career fair He has a job as a DJ but is looking for more stability It's people like Peguero that Southwest Florida economists say are fueling this job market and they're not sitting idle; they are actually out there looking for a job," says Amir Neto Director of the Regional Economic Research Institute He explains that we have many job openings in Southwest Florida even if it seems like jobs aren't hiring as frequently He says that historically the trend is pointing in a positive direction and we have seen an increase in labor force participation rate," says Neto He says job seekers can be more selective in their search and people like Peguero are making sure to find the perfect position that fits his qualifications and needs Peguero's advice is to go to as many job fairs as possible "There's something here for everyone," says Peguero The Florida Joblinktold FOX4 that roughly 120 people showed up to the fair at the Drury Inn from 10 a.m Neto says that with population growth since the pandemic and now moving into the season employers should expect more people looking for dependable work — There are still abandoned boats in the water in Fort Myers drives across the Caloosahatchee every day and she see the wrecked boats all the time Two women have been fighting to remove one of those derelict boats from Legacy Habour Marina "You'll see all the oil films still on the water Dewey and Mary Jo Felix live in downtown Fort Myers and see the leftover damaged boat every morning "Last fall on is when they really started getting all the debris picked up and the old boats that were still laying there it would kind of look like a junkyard," says Dewey they formed a committee of concerned citizens that went to the city and even state officials to get this area cleaned up the Legacy Harbor people cleaned up most of it," says Mary Jo Felix and I imagine it's that we don't know whose responsibility it is." We contacted the Legacy Habour and asked why the vessel was left out of the clean-up efforts Statement on behalf of Legacy Harbour re: marina clean-up Legacy Harbour is dedicated to cleaning up its property and has worked diligently to remove debris from the property and outside the marina basin While the vessel in question is in located in the Legacy Harbour marina Legacy Harbour is in regular communications local and state agencies including the West Coast Inland Navigation District (WCIND) regarding the removal of this vessel and look forward to a positive resolution A representative from the West Coast Inland Navigation District says there are close to 140 boats left over from Ian in Lee and Charlotte counties; the agency says it's working to remove them all He says they are in the second round for a grant that could help get the vessel out of this private marina in Fort Myers But at this point there's no timeline for when that work will be done — After hearing about a child being hit by an SUV in the Lehigh Acres wanting to know what they could do to make school bus stops safer than the district's legal responsibility has spoken to parents for weeks about their concerns with bus stops near construction sites They were also concerned about the wee hours of the morning pick-ups and low visibility Fox 4 spoke to Sharetha Davis before the 2024 Fall school year started in a previous school bus update story Davis is a parent of two children and lives near Ortiz and Mina Circle She did not want her two children standing on the side of the road to get picked up We shared those concerns with the district and Miyoshi Price stood at that location waiting for a bus to arrive to see if the changes were made to the pickup location dropping students in a safer location than before Mina Circle was one of several places where construction took place; there were no sidewalks and a lot of speeding traffic A district spokesperson told Fox 4 parents should report sites with construction that cause concerns A safety team will review the stop and ensure it meets state guidelines Miyoshi Price met a woman who drives a road like Ortiz Road daily and sees children right next to the road getting ready to be picked up for school in the morning "It would be nice if they had somewhere to sit," says Tammy Goodwin "It would make them stay off the road and more visible to drivers so I think it would be a really good idea to have benches or chairs or something for them to sit while they’re waiting for the bus." The district representative says he understands that not every family can wait with their child at the bus stop they encourage parents to work with relatives and neighbors to ensure that students have adults around — People who live in the Michigan Avenue area say they're concerned about traffic safety and how the city is using a property it recently purchased there Your Fort Myers Community Correspondent, Miyoshi Price, went to thespecial city council meetingthis week people told me they were concerned with the city's plan for the property The two-building warehouse is within walking distance from Caitie Eck's property Eck says she and other families attended a parks and recreation collaboration meeting in June after the city bought the land "Where we started to get a little concerned as we then learned that a lot of the parks and rec vehicles were going to sort of live at this property," says Caitie Eck a Michigan Avenue resident Eck believes it will cause in-and-out traffic and they are considering putting the entrance on another street "As well as an additional parking area being created in a vacant parcel that could exacerbate our stormwater flow issues," says Eck and he showed me how close his home is to the warehouse "I walk the whole neighborhood about four times a day." He says if the parks and rec vehicles cause more activity and noise -- he could see that being an issue but is more excited to see the transformation of the building under the city's ownership "There is a plan in the works," says Black "I think they've pledged to do some work on the buildings and the site to make it a little more appealing so I'd be anxious to see their plans and see what it's going to look like." City staff sent a statement addressing the next steps it says another resident collaboration session will highlight projects like landscaping and park amenities on the north side of the building City staff just received more direction from the Fort Myers City Council at Monday’s special council meeting around the park option The City is looking forward to beautifying this building and the surrounding area for the neighborhood residents and all those driving by it Eck said she felt a great deal of relief to know that there would be continued conversations between the city and the residents who live near the property.
