Music producer Mark 'Mooka' Rennick in the recording studio
Mark “Mooka” Rennick started recording local bands on a cheap analog tape machine while still a student at Sonoma State University in the ’70s
After buying a mixing board used by the Beach Boys
a residential recording studio for top-notch artists who flocked from around the world to live
many of his musical heroes showed up at his door: Tom Waits
that journey came to an end as rent increases forced him to close the studio’s doors
in addition to working at satellite studios here and in Portland
Rennick is finally returning to his original dream — to record his own music
There was a student newspaper at the University of Illinois called Prairie Sun
my good friend back home has a prairie restoration project that I’m still heavily involved in
I’ve been back to burn the prairie for the last five years in a row
There are 10 acres under cultivation that we planted in 1972
It’s all about restorative agriculture and it all relates to the same world we have here in Sonoma County
who was living at his mother’s house in Florida and sang one of his poems into his mom’s cassette recorder
Then Tom Waits came in and did a recording of that mix at Prairie Sun
Artists came from all over the world to live with us
because you can get really insulated in your own little world
We would have Thanksgiving with them and their children and their families
I finished an album called “Sons of Lincoln,” by this spoken-word collective I’m in called The Abolitionists
and I’m working on finishing my own solo record
as artists came through Prairie Sun — Dick Dale
Prairie Prince — we recorded tracks together… Now
I finally have the freedom to work on my own record

Bapple choppa mooka-laka ooh-na-na!" wrote the organization responsible for Canadians' taxes
BY Alex HudsonPublished Jul 4, 2024
Everybody loves when bureaucratic organizations have silly, sassy personalities on social media, right? The Wendysification of corporate Twitter has now come for the Canada Revenue Agency, which has started posting Minions memes for some reason.
The tax organization surely instilled confidence in Canadians today by tweeting, "Bello bananaaaa! Bapple choppa mooka-laka ooh-na-na!" along with a GIF of Bob the Minion jumping. The CRA even added the hashtags #CdnTax and #DespicableMe4, just to remind everyone how this is a movie about the henchmen of an evil supervillain.
UPDATE (7/4, 2:38 p.m. ET): The CRA has evidently thought better of its social media strategy, since the tweets have been deleted, leaving posts roasting the company in their wake.
In a subsequent tweet, the CRA (kind of) clarified the reason for the post: "Oops, the minions were at it again! What they meant was: The kids wearing you out? At least applying for the #CanadaChildBenefit is easy — AND you can do it one-handed on your phone."
Maybe if they spent a little less time watching Minions movies, they would have time to do our taxes for us, instead of making us do them ourselves and getting us in trouble if we make a mistake!

From spring through summer on the Formula One racing circuit
engines took a remarkable five consecutive checkered flags for the first time in 33 years
But that success may have fueled discontent at the Honda shareholders meeting in late June
as one stockholder criticized the automaker's decision to pull out of F1 racing at the end of this season
"The founder would be saddened to see (the automaker) stop engine production."
But Honda President Toshiro Mibe defended his company's decision
He said Honda's new driving force is his decision to no longer sell vehicles that emit carbon dioxide by 2040
replacing them with electric or fuel cell vehicles
"We'll compete in a decarbonization race from now on," Mibe said
Honda will also hit the brakes on producing hybrid vehicles that run on a combination of gasoline and electricity
The decision has stirred a backlash and uncomfortable feelings even among its employees
who say it is an "easier-said-than-done target."
The automaker decided to shut down an engine parts plant in Mooka
When it offered an early retirement program to all Honda employees aged 55 and older
or 5 percent of its full-time workforce in Japan
But I already had a hunch when I was working as an engineer that cars would be increasingly electrified to make (engines) a thing of the past before too long," said Mibe
"That trend is approaching with the flow of decarbonization."
While the European Union intends to effectively ban the sales of new gasoline-powered vehicles in 2035
President Joe Biden has signed an executive order that will require half of all new cars sold in 2030 to achieve zero emissions
Honda's move seems to have been influenced by the shift to electric vehicles in overseas countries
A former employee described it as a "strategy of ushering someone to the second floor and removing the ladder," which has been passed down through successive generations of Honda engineers
It means setting a high goal and driving employees to achieve it
One successful example was the development of the CVCC engine in the 1970s
When the Clean Air Act was enacted to severely regulate exhaust gases in the United States
Honda was the first automaker to meet the stringent standards
It led to the huge success of its Civic model
And when it met California's low emission vehicle standards in the 1990s
Honda's exit from combustion engines appears not completely unrelated to a sense of stagnation that has lingered at the company in recent years
Although Honda has always been a top-tier company in terms of engine technologies
in developing hybrid vehicles in the 1990s
It also fell behind its rival by a large margin in terms of the number of units sold and profits
"I think it wants to be a game-changer by concentrating on next-generation technologies while Toyota keeps hybrid vehicles as an option," said a senior member of a parts manufacturer
When Mibe hosted a teleconference in early summer
he faced a barrage of questions from presidents of about 30 affiliated auto parts makers who said they were baffled by Honda's sudden decision and that they were worried about their future work volume
"We wanted them to be prepared for electrification by showing them our future goal in a clear-cut manner," a Honda executive said
the executive added: "It's only natural that they won't survive unless they do something different."
Electric and fuel cell vehicles account for less than 1 percent of all cars currently sold by Honda
with the remaining 99 percent powered by combustion engines
"We are tied up with work at the moment," said the president of an engine parts manufacturer in Saitama Prefecture
"Even though we are told to think about the future because there will be no more work
But the crisis is not a thing of the distant future
the credit research company Teikoku Databank Ltd
announced the first bankruptcy case in Japan apparently caused by the shift to electric vehicles
which had provided planning and designing services for machines and metal molds used to make engine parts
the company was named in tribute to Honda Giken Kogyo
Having provided support to an overseas automaker to develop an engine
its sales reached 1.3 billion yen ($11.8 million) in or around 2000
But with its clients shifting to electric vehicles
the company's sales plummeted in or around 2015
decided to close the company after he failed to win an order to make a machine used to manufacture parts for Honda's next model engine
Ode gave an apologetic speech in front of 10 employees
explaining that the company's workload had decreased rapidly due to the novel coronavirus pandemic and the shift to electric vehicles
The president said he had made every effort to shift to electric vehicles
Ode showed employees reports from a securities firm that urged the company to find new contracts
while he ventured into producing brake parts also essential to electric cars
it wasn't enough to cover lost profits from engine-related parts
which accounted for 80 percent of the company's sales
"We needed to make efforts to change our business model
I want other companies in the same business to learn that lesson," Ode said
Japan's automotive industry has a pyramid structure
with Honda and other leading automakers at the top
gas stations and other related businesses on lower rungs
The industry employs about 5.5 million workers in Japan
who also serves as head of the Japan Automotive Manufacturers Association
has estimated that the employment of 700,000 to 1 million people will be affected if combustion engine cars are replaced by electric and other zero-emission vehicles while remaining dependent on thermal power generation to provide power to factories

PARO has been leading the way for women entrepreneurs through their innovative learning tools and financing for more than 20 years
and this past January they brought all their resources together for their 15-week BIZcamp
This virtual workshop provided wraparound support for Indigenous women wanting to scale their businesses in Northwestern Ontario with cultural wellness at every step of this journey
who received the Re-Imagine Award that spotlights an individual who has pivoted their business with new products or services to meet societal needs because of Covid-19
is excited to move forward with her business after the BIZCamp
website and recruitment campaign for her business
“Mooka'am Kwe has provided me with the knowledge and business skills that I needed to elevate my confidence as an entrepreneur,” she says
“Our Elders and the sharing among the Indigenous women in our group has provided me with powerful and inspiring support and guidance.”
One such business sector affected heavily by Covid-19 has been the hospitality industry and the ever-changing closures
owner of In Common Restaurant felt it deeply
“The Mooka’am Kwe BizCamp came at a very much needed time for me and our crew at In Common,” she says about the ongoing changes

PARO has created an environment where women can
By providing microfinancing through PARO’s loan and grant program
these circles also provide a space for small groups of like-minded women to meet and share their experiences

The festive season might be the time to relax for ordinary people, but for entrepreneurs and such
this is the busiest and most opportune time for them to make inroads in their business
told The Citizen that this period of the year is the best time to sell her rum
I have been busy with In-Store Tastings in all the Norman Goodfellows stores around Gauteng
this is my busiest time of the year,” Mooka told The Citizen
Mooka Rum was the highest scoring rum from South Africa at the London Spirits Competition
The London Spirits Competition looks to recognise
and help promote spirits brands that have successfully been created to identify with and target a specific spirits drinker
The 36 year-old Mooka said she entered the competition to earn credibility for her brand
“I did some research and found that there are annual spirits awards taking place all around the world
I entered the London Spirits Competition by completing an application form
paid the registration fee and shipped few bottles to London where they conducted blind tasting with judges throughout the world.”
The competition took place in April this year
ALSO READ: Three foods to help with hangover recovery
Mooka began working on the rum concept in 2020 during lockdown but only launched it in August 2022
“Doing rum is my first attempt at business
I have been working in corporate for the past for 15 years
[I] only realised my leadership capabilities few years ago,” said Mooka
“Through achieving accolades and being able to lead successful teams
I realised that I have the ability to create and run my own business.”
Mooka initially wanted to go with gin but noticed that the spirit had a rapid growth in the market and everyone was doing it
“I then thought of a product that has potential to become big which was rum,” Mooka says
she studied the market and saw a gap in rum producers
“It was a risk but an extremely great opportunity for me to introduce something that is ‘not so popular’
A lot of people do not know what rum is so I challenged myself to tab into that market
share knowledge of the product and sell a quality craft barrel-aged spirit.”

The Pretoria born and bred businesswoman says some of her biggest challenges have been getting her product into retail stores
“Most of them say that they do not have shelve spaces and some are saying they only stock well-known brands only
This is something that the industry needs to work hard on to make sure we make space and give new businesses an opportunity to be in this industry.”
Her product is currently available at Makro Online
Norman Goodfellows stores in all the Gauteng stores and online
MOOKA Rum is also available at Earthbound Distillery In-store and online as well
Getting space in retail is one of her biggest challenges she says
“I am told that they are not adding new products to their stores which is limiting my product’s accessibility.”
“It is a Setswana word that means ‘healer’
I chose to use my surname to pay homage to those who came before me
And also I also wanted to have a product with an African name or brand.”
With her business less than three years old
Mooka said she’s looking to build a team for the upcoming year as she still operates the business by herself
“I would like to see MOOKA Rum in most of the household liquor stores across the country
And I would also like to supply my product outside our South Africa borders.”

As developments related to industries such as mining
PARO Centre for Women Enterprises is supporting Indigenous women-owned businesses with the tools and resources needed to scale up their business within these industries
PARO has been using a one-on-one approach to meet women where they’re at in their business and Mooka’am Kwe is no exception
Mooka’am Kwe will support Indigenous women-owned businesses to position themselves to take advantage of the opportunities Northern Ontario sectors are offering with deep training and insight
PARO’s Enterprising Indigenous Women Program (EIW)
began as a conversation between the Vice President of Noront Resources and PARO CEO Rosalind Lockyer
Cook says they talked about the need for an organization like PARO to build a stepping-stone for Indigenous women owned businesses to take advantage of the opportunities within Northern Ontario
Mooka’am Kwe is a major facet of this program
and will act as a “one-stop-stop” for Indigenous women looking to scale or grow their businesses
PARO will be partnering with three organizations to conduct this BIZCamp
The Canadian Executive Services Organization (CESO)
a national organization that supports First Nations in building their entrepreneurial and business ventures
will discuss how to discover where opportunities are in the mining sector; Go Forth Institute will offer participants access to the online learning system they provide for entrepreneurs
giving them an ongoing plethora of knowledge; and Elders from Blue Sky Healing Centre
“This is a wraparound Point A to Point Z support system
from marketing to pricing to business planning all the way through the lifecycle of launching and where to scale up and identifying where those opportunities are in these traditionally male dominated sectors,” Cook says
Cook is looking forward to the opportunity to connect with a multi-faceted group of women without geography standing in the way
As working and learning remotely is a norm everyone is now used to
Cook thinks this ups the advantage when working with women to grow their business because that geographical limit is no longer there
“As we’re working remotely we have very little restraints with who works with whom.”
Cook believes this is a step in a successful direction in keeping businesses
above water through times that can be treacherous
Mooka’am Kwe proves to be an exciting 15-week dive into successful entrepreneurial opportunities and PARO is making it possible for Indigenous women owned enterprises and businesses to succeed in Northern Ontario and Canada
“We want [women] to know that they can achieve their dreams
that the lofty goal they had in mind when they started their business is achievable.”

Kawani had woken seconds before and cried — a sound his mother will cherish for the rest of her life
The boy was rushed to Townsville Hospital in a critical condition
put into a coma in the Intensive Care Unit to help ease the bleeding on his brain and chaplains were called to pray for him
the tough little boy was moved out of the ICU and was recovering yesterday
Ms Freeman told how what started as a little boy not wanting to have a shower and go to school led to the most harrowing moment of her life
“He was hiding from me behind the curtain on top of the couch,” she said
“I could see his shadow behind the curtain
so I took a step to tell him to come jump in the shower and he just fell through the (fly) screen.”
There was a moment of utter disbelief for Ms Freeman
ran to her niece and asked her to call an ambulance
he was on his side curled up and he was just out to it,” Ms Freeman said
especially when we got here (Townsville Hospital) and he wasn’t waking up
“All the chaplains came in and asked everyone to pray for him and the prayers were answered
Kawani has been left almost unscathed after the terrifying fall
a fracture on the left side of his skull and a small brain bleed that has now stopped,” Ms Freeman said
“The doctors think he will make a full recovery
“He has just come out the same boy who came in here
“They thought when he woke up he could have had head injuries
The little boy who Ms Freeman said likes doing backflips off the couch
runs around all the time and climbs everything
“I said we could go for a walk earlier and he just wanted to climb on everything
Enjoy what life throws your way and take pleasure in everything you do

The murder trial for a woman who was allegedly stabbed and killed by her best friend at a set of Townsville apartments will proceed after two failed court proceedings
Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons debutant Steph Mooka puts her whole heart into the game of rugby league
and while it is full for the opportunity to represent her state on Friday night
fights back tears as she previews in her own mind the moment she looks to the stands and won’t see two very important people
Mooka will look down at her wrist and up to the stars to feel older sister Martha’s presence with her at North Sydney Oval
"It’s my older sister’s birthday on the 21st of June and we lost her last year
The stars aligned and what will be Mooka’s State of Origin debut will also be one of the hardest days for her family - Martha’s first birthday since her passing
“When I told my older brother that I had made the Queensland team he offered to pay for my mum and 19-year-old nephew
Mooka is recognisable - by far the tallest player in the squad
but has taken some quiet time to reflect on how incredible it is to be playing for Queensland on such a special but difficult occasion for herself and her family
“She was a massive die-hard Cowboys fan,” Mooka said as she fondly remembered her big sister
she would have definitely come down to watch me if she was still alive.”
Far from her home and her family in the Torres Strait and Far North Queensland
the mother-of-one has sought the advice of her Maroons teammates
“I have asked a few people how I deal with that
because the day is going to be very emotional," Mooka said
Mooka is not backing down from the challenge
“I want to use it to my advantage; use it for motivation
Mooka’s nine-year-old son Tyrique will be watching from home
but it is her younger brother whose absence will be felt as she makes every run and tackle
“I lost one of my younger brothers to suicide,” Mooka said
revealing a rare insight into the heartbreak she has suffered and the resilience required to get to this level
“It’s been overwhelming and I’ve got emotional a few times,” she said of her time in Camp Maroon
“If there’s one thing others can take away from my journey
you just keep going at it and you never give up.”
Mooka is playing for more than just the jersey
even more than playing for her family and the loved ones she has lost
“I’m going to give it my everything; I am doing this for my people," Mooka said
I am really proud to represent where I came from
because it’s such a tiny island with only 200 people
“All of these little girls who have been watching me at local indigenous carnivals for 10 years have been commenting on social media saying ‘you’re my idol’
“For those young girls to say that and feel that
I’ve inspired these young girls and given them hope that there is a chance to make it to the big time
“I’m only just starting to realise how important Women’s State of Origin is
how big this is and how much it means - not just to me
but all of my friends and family and the whole Torres Strait.”
