Japan is a treasure trove of movie theaters
most of such old cinemas have been rebuilt
or relocated in response to the needs of the times
But in the city of Motomiya in Fukushima Prefecture
there is a century-old theater preserved just the way it once was
Built in 1914 as a theater of performing arts called Motomiya-za
it later started screening silent films and was renamed Motomiya Eiga Gekijo
when local impresario Torakichi Tamura purchased it in 1943
the picture house was taken over by his son Shuji
but closed down in 1963 as fewer people came to the movies with the advent of television
Shuji worked to keep it in good shape with the hope of one day bringing it back to life
held a screening at the Motomiya Movie Theater for the first time in 45 years
Another screening was held in 2014 to celebrate the theater's centennial
Shuji's daughter Yuko wrote and published a book on the movie theater
To enter the movie theater and step into the history of Japanese cinema
he'll let you into the lobby filled with vintage movie posters and nostalgic whatnot
But the real gem is just behind the wall: an old silver screen set in an authentically retro hall
Worth mentioning is the poster of Keisatsu Nikki
a 1952 film that was partly filmed in Motomiya and was a huge box-office hit at the Movie Theater
You can also take a look inside the projection booth
occupied by a rare carbon arc film projector made in 1957
screening a few films a year at the Motomiya Movie Theater to this day

Many regions across Japan share a long history of cultural exchange with other places around the world
which is a little less known but holds great significance: the relationship between the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in London
Following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami
many countries initiated community projects with Japan to show solidarity with the disaster victims
One such project was the building of the Fukushima Garden in London’s Holland Park in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
The Fukushima Garden was built in July 2012
a year after the Great East Japan Earthquake
It can be found next to the popular Kyoto Garden in Holland Park
The Fukushima Garden was designed to be a place for quiet contemplation for those who were affected by the 2011 disaster
the garden has become a symbol of unity between the people of Japan and the United Kingdom
The previous Emperor Akihito visited the Fukushima Garden in May 2012 while on a trip to the U.K
to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee
The Emperor wrote a letter of support for the Fukushima Garden which has been displayed on a plaque there to express how deeply moved both he and the Empress were by the response of the U.K
He also praised the valuable relief activities by the U.K
July 2015 marked the third anniversary of the Fukushima Garden
who was the mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea at the time
proposed to construct a “sister” British Garden in Fukushima Prefecture
Mr Uchibori took the proposal back with him to Japan
where it was very well received — eventually leading to the construction of the garden in November 2017
Prince William from the British Royal Family visited Fukushima during an official trip to Japan
The visit was significant since it came at a time when people had reservations about going to Fukushima
The positive impact of the Prince’s visit can be felt in the prefecture to this day
where he had the opportunity to meet some of the parents and children of the city
the Prince also planted an English oak tree in the park
which was meant as a symbolic wish for Fukushima’s speedy recovery
Prince William’s visit to Motomiya was warmly welcomed — so much so that the park where he planted the tree was subsequently nicknamed Prince William’s Park
It later received approval for use of the name and formal recognition by the British Royal Family
Prince William’s Park has gone on to become an incredibly popular place for the families of Motomiya and Fukushima
the park also sends a strong and yet simple message to the rest of the world: if Fukushima was safe enough for a prince and future king of England to visit
then it is safe enough for the people that live here and for the people who visit
in conjunction with Motomiya’s 10th anniversary of gaining city status
work began to build the English Garden within Prince William’s Park
The garden has since been enjoyed by people from all over Fukushima Prefecture
such as Motomiya’s Goodwill Ambassadors from the U.K.
staff from British sports car manufacturer Aston Martin
and members from the British embassy in Tokyo have also visited
and even kindly donated English roses to the garden
The English Garden was designed by Yoshihiro Hamano
who was the former gardener at the British embassy in Tokyo
It is now enjoyed by both residents inside and outside of Fukushima Prefecture
The garden has received numerous letters of support
including those from former British Prime Minister Theresa May
and former Kensington Mayor Marie-Therese Rossi
To symbolize the new relationship between the Fukushima garden in London and the new English garden in Motomiya
an English teacher from Motomiya translated an engraving entitled
“Building Bridges,” which can now be found in the Fukushima garden in London
Since the installation of the British Garden in Motomiya
the relationship between the city and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in London has increased steadily each year
students from Motomiya’s junior high schools have had the opportunity to visit London
and the first exchanges with students from two London schools began in 2018
Motomiya now has a yearly English festival that takes place next to Prince William’s Park
which also features tribute acts to iconic U.K
The festival even has many British food on sale
with everything from traditional English scones to delicious fish and chips
The relationship between Kensington and Motomiya City is an example of what can be achieved by two parties when they work together for the common good
The road has been paved for future generations of both Kensington and Motomiya to engage in cultural exchange — and
we are also reminded of the value of friendship during the hardest of times

Ten Shimoyama (live-action SHINOBI - Heart Under Blade, Erased) is directing the film, with scripts by Shinichi Tanaka (A Turtle's Shell Is a Human's Ribs)
The Manga Planet service describes the manga's story:
Motomiya's latest work on the manga is titled Salaryman Kintaro Gojūsai (Salaryman Kintaro 50 Years Old)
which ran in Weekly Young Jump from 2015 to 2016
NTT Solmare's ComicFriends Facebook-based service briefly offered the manga in English, but the service closed in 2012. Manga Planet is releasing the original manga in English
Veteran actor Katsunori Takahashi played the role in a popular 1999 film directed by Takashi Miike, as well as in a four-season 1999-2004 television drama series. Masaru Nagai played the role in a live-action series that ran from 2008 to 2010. The manga also inspired a 2001 anime series that Arts Magic released in North America

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako on Thursday visited areas in northeastern Japan that were hit by a powerful typhoon in October to encourage the victims
in the couple's first trip to disaster-hit regions since the emperor's enthronement in May
The couple visited Marumori in Miyagi Prefecture as well as Motomiya in Fukushima Prefecture to see areas that were inundated as Typhoon Hagibis passed
including a total 17 in the two municipalities
(Empress Masako (center L) and Emperor Naruhito (R))[Pool photo]
The visit followed the completion earlier this month of a series of ceremonies marking the imperial succession
After arriving in Marumori on a Self-Defense Forces helicopter and visiting an area where a river had overflowed
the couple met affected people including Masao Takano
who has been living in temporary housing since his home was destroyed by the typhoon
I am glad you were safe," the emperor told Takano
"I hope your life will be more settled," the empress told him
The couple then went to Motomiya to view an area where an embankment along the Adatara River had collapsed and met with victims at a welfare facility
Ten people died in Marumori and seven in Motomiya as a result of the typhoon
according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency
the couple visited disaster-stricken areas to offer condolences and encouragement
former Emperor Akihito and former Empress Michiko
The current emperor and empress had extended their sympathies to the victims of the typhoon and expressed their desire to visit the affected areas
the couple's parade to mark the enthronement was postponed to Nov

In March 2018 I learned I was accepted into the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Program
and my placement was Motomiya — a small city (hardly a city by British standards!) known as the “Navel City” of Fukushima Prefecture
This fortuitous placement led me to come into contact with a local hub of history and tradition: Daitengu Sake Brewery
Motomiya joined with Shirasawa Village to become a city
and both places preserve their local traditions and history
One of the manifestations of this effort has been the tradition of Japanese sake
The Fukushima region has a long-standing history of award-winning sake production
due to the climatic extremes between summer and winter
and the diligence and devotion of its sake brewers
People who try Fukushima sake often comment on its smooth
This is largely attributed to the water quality
Nihonmatsu sake uses spring water from its surrounding Mount Adatara
Aizu (to the west) is home to the renowned Fukushima Sake Academy. In Central Fukushima’s Nakadori region, Nihonmatsu’s Okunomatsu Ginjyou sake won first prize in the International Wine Challenge and was recently showcased at an event to celebrate the Emperor’s birthday in Brussels
attributes the distinct taste of its sake to the use of locally-sourced rice and spring water from nearby Mount Adatara
The brewery’s name comes from a Japanese monster (called a tengu)
which was found in the house where the sake business began over 140 years ago (“Daitengu” means “big tengu”)
Daitengu’s sake-making method remains largely unchanged since its foundation in Meiji 5th year (1872)
Daitengu has a long history of sake production
but it has kept up with the times and retains a modern feel
There are over 20 types of sake at Daitengu
5th generation in the family operating the brewery
their most popular buys include the Daitengu Tokubetsu Junmai-shu
colourful motif (resembling the Japanese hiragana letter mo もfor “Motomiya”)
and “Mikoshi” specials made especially for the Motomiya’s Autumn Festivals: Hadaka and Mayumi Mikoshi (shrine-carrying parades)
who graduated from sake training school in Aizu in April 2018
is involved in running the brewery for his family
Junmai-shu (“pure rice sake”) is made with 100% rice
Honjozo-shu has a little distilled alcohol added to the rice
Saori told us that this type of sake is best served warm
Daigingo-shu is brewed from highly-polished rice containing less than 50% of the original grains
this sake involves a very labor-intensive brewing method
it goes with sweet and savory Japanese food
but recently it has become more common to drink it chilled
There are a variety of different glass shapes for drinking sake
from tiny cups not much bigger than a thimble
Saori explained to us that the shape of the mouth of a sake cup can affect its taste
a wide-mouthed cup is said to have a stronger aftertaste
The color of the glass can also influence your sake tasting experience
The blue stripy inner pattern of this cup brings out the yellow tones of sake to help compare different sake types
It is said that the stronger the shade of yellow
It can also be mixed with fizzy soda for a sweeter taste
My personal favorite is the special glass you can purchase with pickled plums inside
Motomiya is a unique city with a long history
having developed rapidly as a traveller’s town from the Meiji period in the latter half of the 19th century
Daitengu is an example of one its oldest and best-kept industries

National Report
Fukushima Prefecture--Shuji Tamura has grown despondent over being unable to directly thank people who helped to rescue his 106-year-old movie theater
located in a three-story wooden building on a back street about a three-minute walk from JR Motomiya Station
has experienced all sorts of problems over the decades
19 in autumn last year that threatened to close the theater for good
After word about the flooding damage to the theater and its film reels spread on social media
offers of assistance arrived from across the nation
The movie theater in a residential area was repaired enough to allow for plans to hold a revival screening event in spring this year
“I would like to show visitors how well the films damaged by the flood were restored.”
But the event was postponed because of the novel coronavirus pandemic
Tamura is now waiting for a chance to reopen the theater at least one more time
Local residents opened the theater in 1914 as a “community center.” Tamura’s father bought the theater during World War II
attendance dwindled after more households bought TV sets
Tamura had learned how to use a cinema projector when he was a child
Although he inherited the theater from his father
Tamura decided to work as an automobile salesman after the theater closed
I would like to welcome movie-goers again,” he said
took care of the films and cleaned the theater
and film industry had become much more digitized
Tamura felt it would be difficult to make the theater profitable
he held a free screening event on the request of an eye doctor
The visitors praised the retro-looking theater for its use of film in the 1957 carbon projector that uses flashing carbon rod as a light source
The dimly-lit lobby still features many posters of movie stars
and of films released during the Showa Era (1926-1989)
About 100 wooden chairs are located on the concrete floor inside the theater
Tamura held free events a few times every year
showing movies featuring such stars as Sayuri Yoshinaga and Yujiro Ishihara
The theater attracted movie fans from around Japan
19 in autumn last year caused the Abukumagawa river and its tributaries to flood
and more than 2,000 houses and buildings were damaged
Flood water from a river reached a height of about 80 centimeters in Tamura’s theater and his home about 150 meters from the venue
Half of the 400 film cans on shelves on the first floor of his house were drenched in muddy water
Tamura’s daughter posted messages on social media
such as: “The battle with mud has just started,” and “Do your best
films!” She also showed pictures of Tamura and his supporters cleaning inside the theater
A manufacturer in Kanagawa Prefecture sent 10 boxes of film cans to the theater
About 30 people affiliated with the film industry in Tokyo showed up at the theater to help clean and dry the film
The effort led to the restoration of about 100 films
Tamura wanted to thank those people and movie fans
so he decided to hold a free screening event during the long holidays in May
that timing coincided with the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus in Japan
Tamura had to call off the screening to prevent the expected crowd from becoming a potential virus hotspot
He continues to wait for an opportunity to welcome the movie fans to the theater again
A flier on the wall of the lobby says: “Special Preview
But the date of the preview has not been written on it
Tamura looked into the distance and mumbled
“I am so sad because I can’t write the event date on it even now.”
