Tomohiro Hata Architect & Associates’ House in Muko is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Kyoto farmstead. While the residential area is surrounded by sprawling farmland and bamboo forests
the project responds to the region’s distinctive architectural heritage while addressing the demands of modern living
this area of Kyoto Prefecture has been characterized by a unique settlement pattern — farmhouses clustered around a central dwelling
rapid urbanization has led to the demolition of many of these traditional structures
disrupting the area’s historic fabric
The design team at Tomohiro Hata Architect & Associates faced the challenge of creating a new home that respected this rich history without simply replicating it
They sought to bridge the gap between the past and present
crafting a dwelling that is both rooted in the local context and responsive to contemporary lifestyles
At the core of the traditional farmhouse are two key elements — a spacious living area that encompasses agricultural fields
and a hierarchical arrangement of buildings centered around the main house
These features reflect the area’s agrarian past and deeply connect to its cultural identity
modern residential architecture often prioritizes open
flexible spaces and a breakdown of hierarchical structures
The architects sought to reconcile these two approaches by reimagining the traditional farmhouse as a series of interconnected

Suspects in an investigation into accounting firms and companies linked to the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) were released on bail yesterday morning
a day after being questioned over allegations of fraud in campaign finance reporting
an accountant at Jing Hua CPA (精華會計師事務所) who was contracted by the TPP to handle financial reporting for TPP Chairman Ko Wen-je’s (柯文哲) presidential bid
was released on bail of NT$1 million (US$30,945)
The amount was lowered after being initially set at NT$2 million
which handled events and merchandising for the campaign
They have been barred from leaving the country and are to wear electronic surveillance monitors
Both are under investigation for forgery after discrepancies were found in TPP reporting of campaign payments to marketing firms
The party earlier this week said that mistakes were made in 17 campaign finance declarations totaling about NT$18 million
Tuanmu’s assistant Chen Wei-hsuan (陳韋瑄) and Muko accountant Ho Ai-ting (何璦廷) have also been named as suspects
while Ho was released on bail of NT$500,000
Figures within the TPP have blamed Legislator Vivian Huang (黃珊珊) for the situation and have demanded that she resign as a lawmaker
told reporters that Huang must take full responsibility for the scandal
as she was executive director of Ko’s campaign office for January’s election
The party’s Central Evaluation Committee is to meet today to discuss the issue
who was a Taipei deputy mayor from 2018 to 2022 while Ko was mayor of the capital
on Wednesday resigned as a member of the TPP Central Standing Committee
“The case is being investigated and we should wait for the legal process to conclude,” Huang said
“I will respect any decision that the Central Evaluation Committee makes.”
TPP officials said that Tuanmu was in charge of the campaign expenses accounting and filing declarations to the Control Yuan
while Tuanmu has rejected accusations of wrongdoing
Among the controversial account items was a campaign receipt for an order of boxed lunches from a Taipei restaurant totaling NT$960,110
TPP spokeswoman Celina Wu (吳怡萱) said that there was a simple mistake when the figures were recorded
but they were mistakenly combined as NT$960,110,” Wu said
One receipt was dated last year and the other was from this year
Wu said that it was unclear how the accountant had dealt with them
“We are not sure if he filed the receipts together or separately in two declarations,” she said
“We will check the campaign expense declaration filed with the Control Yuan.”
yesterday spoke with employees at the restaurant
Liu said that the employees told him the restaurant is only open on weekdays
but the receipts showed that the sales took place on weekends
Ko Wen-je holds press conference to address allegations of misreporting campaign donations
Campaign Deputy Director Chen Zhi-han (陳智菡) stated that the controversy began when event contracting company Shi Le mentioned last week that the campaign had declared NT$5 million (US$153,817) in expenses
The company clarified that these expenses included collections and payments on behalf of media advertising and live broadcasts but not broadcasting services
Chen stated that receipts confirmed the campaign had commissioned Shi Le to collect and pay the broadcasting fees
The events covered included a Taichung event on Jan
Chen emphasized that numerous expenses were incurred
including the production of small campaign items and venue fees
the campaign headquarters’ finance department entrusted the accounting work to accountant Tuan Mu-cheng (端木正)
The team discovered an underreported amount exceeding NT$18.17 million (US$558,974)
An inquiry with Tuan revealed that numerous instances of underreporting occurred due to “time constraints.”
Tuan arbitrarily adjusted the amounts into nine separate payments to companies such as Shi Le
and Muko without informing anyone at campaign headquarters
the campaign headquarters was completely unaware of these actions
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) Chair Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) held a press conference Monday (Aug. 12) afternoon to address allegations of misreporting presidential campaign donations
with expenditures flowing into public relations firm Muko (木可公關公司).
The company is associated with Ko and his campaign director
Muko Chairman Lee Wen-chuan (李文娟) announced Monday that due to recent controversies and criticisms
it has decided to "suspend operations immediately” and proceed with legal liquidation.
The TPP admitted to accounting errors last week
Muko said the company was founded to promote Ko’s presidential campaign
It hoped to combine Taiwanese businesses with innovation to create high-quality products
gathering more support to foster a deeper commitment to Ko’s ideals
Muko said all remaining profits after liquidation will be donated to charity
It also hoped to continue the company's mission of building a better Taiwan

The new anthropology documentary captures the day-to-day life of an extended family in the traditional Hamar tribe of southern Ethiopia

There was another grumpy patriarch on Channel 4 last night. In fact, "Families are the same way the world over" seemed to be the main theme of new anthropology documentary The Tribe – not to be confused with the similarly named 2005 to 2007 BBC series. In this one, there's no Bruce Parry getting off his face on the local brew, just rigged cameras capturing the day-to-day life of an extended family in the traditional Hamar tribe of southern Ethiopia.
Granddad Ayke Muko's baseball cap and T-shirt may look humble compared to the elaborate traditional jewellery worn by the rest of his family, but as both the head of the household and respected Hamar elder, he's the natural star of the show. In to-camera interviews he struck up an amusing rapport with the "funny foreigner" asking the questions and was aghast to discover that, in Britain, not everyone keeps livestock: "How can you live without goats?! For us there is nothing more important."
