Set aside those chopsticks and pick up a fork
the diabolically creative minds at Okashi no Buttiku Mon Pactole (Sweets Boutique My Jackpot) in Mie Prefecture added a limited “kaisen-don” cake to its menu
This eight-part seafood bowl of betrayal includes strawberry jelly masquerading as top-tier cuts of “otoro” (fatty Pacific bluefin tuna) and mandarin oranges posing as sea urchin
“It will definitely confuse you,” said patissier Masahiro Sugimoto of the Higashitawara district shop in Nabari
Sugimoto and the rest of the team behind the cake are confident that it will give customers a delicious sense of whiplash
Bite into the squid sashimi and it will reveal itself as milk jelly
while the fatty salmon and roe are both orange jelly
The final surprise under everything is the rice
slices of coffee flavored sponge cake with whipped cream in between
who has worked as a pastry chef for the last seven years
“We were quite particular about the presentation and added the white streaks on the fatty tuna and salmon using milk jelly,” said Sugimoto
The group even went as far as adding mundane details—the green “wasabi” paste is made of fresh cream and the cake comes with a little fish-shaped bottle of soy sauce that sometimes accompanies seafood bowls
It’s filled with “kuromitsu” (brown sugar syrup) instead of soy sauce
the shop has experimented with making rice bowl cakes
Past hits include “katsu” (deep-fried pork cutlet) and “unagi” eel bowls
The less structured mapo tofu with cubed tofu and minced meat was another undertaking
the confectionery shop somehow pulled off re-creating a bowl of “toshikoshi soba” (traditional New Year’s Eve buckwheat noodles)
The idea was to make cakes for customers to enjoy at home
shop owner Shigeko Oishi was among those to suggest creating the colorful seafood bowl
The kaisen-don cake is available until Aug
Please note that the shop is closed on Mondays. Its website can be reached at https://monpactole.com/

Mayor Muhammad al-Nabari grew up in the predominantly Bedouin town of Hura
but in his teens came to the conclusion that there was no future for him in the Negev
and then — to his family’s immense pride — went on to attend Hebrew University and later Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
where he earned a PhD in organic chemistry
he took a job at a prominent pharmaceutical company
“I never cut myself off from my identity as a Bedouin.”
and running an advocacy group for higher education among the Bedouins
In 2005 he ran for mayor of Hura but didn’t take the idea seriously; in fact
he didn’t even bother leaving his job when he began his campaign
“I never believed I would get elected!” he admits
After more than a decade under al-Nabari’s leadership
Hura — though still one of Israel’s poorest communities — has become a model of how local government can be run
With financial assistance from sources including the Jewish National Fund and other Jewish organizations in the United States and United Kingdom
and the highly successful Ahad High School for Science
which accepts gifted Bedouin students from all over the Negev
Education is central to progress and hope for Hura — as for the entire nation — as al-Nabari well knows
“I have told my principals to be responsible for students even after they graduate,” he says
“We check to see how many go on to college and careers.”
Hura has a way to go: There is still poverty and much unemployment to contend with here
and the Bedouins’ relations with the Israeli government are uneasy at best
But al-Nabari believes that it is a waste of time and energy to dwell on who’s to blame or what is not working
“If you focus on the discourse [of] ‘They screwed me over; they discriminated against me’ — then you’ll stay with the problems and have no solutions… It’s very easy to put the blame on others
but if we do our jobs and then fight for what we need from the government

The Supreme Court has rejected a 10th and likely final retrial request to review the 1961 murders of five women with poisoned wine in the central Japan city of Nabari
the top court rejected a special appeal for reopening the case involving Masaru Okunishi
who died at age 89 of pneumonia while on death row in 2015
some 43 years after his death sentence for killing the women
The latest petition was filed by Okunishi's sister Miyoko Oka
with the defense team saying it would be her last due to her advancing years
Oka took up the case after her brother died midway through his ninth retrial request
The defense submitted the special appeal to the Supreme Court after the Nagoya High Court rejected it in March 2022
Four of the five deliberating justices said they were against holding a retrial
becoming the first Supreme Court justice to express his opposition
died and 12 others were hospitalized after drinking poisoned wine at a community meeting on March 28
While Okunishi initially told investigators he had laced the wine with a pesticide
he retracted his confession before his indictment
The Tsu District Court acquitted Okunishi in 1964
But the Nagoya High Court overturned the lower court ruling and sentenced him to death in 1969
a decision the Supreme Court upheld in 1972
defense lawyers submitted as new evidence an expert report stating a fragment of the paper seal on the wine bottle's stopper showed traces of commercially available glue that differed from that used at the wine's manufacturing stage
They argued it showed the true culprit could have opened the wine at a location other than the crime scene
administered the poison and subsequently resealed the bottle
But the top court backed the Nagoya High Court's decision not to authorize a new trial on the basis the written expert opinion did not constitute new evidence
the Nagoya High Court decided to reopen the case after finding there was a high possibility the pesticide Okunishi named was not used
the decision was nullified after prosecutors filed an objection

Are you looking for Assassin Outposts in Assassin's Creed Shadows
These used to be the hideouts of the Kakushiba Ikki
now fallen into disrepair after being abandoned by the faction
It's up to Naoe to find out if there are any secrets that have been left behind
Our guide has all the details to help you discover these locations
but please take note that there will be spoilers ahead
The Kakushiba Ikki is a splinter faction of the Assassin Brotherhood
comprised of formidable warriors such as Nagato (Naoe's father)
the greater conflict that tore apart Japan and the incessant ambition of warlords caused the group's numbers to dwindle
Here are the requirements to unlock this mini-quest chain:
Last but not least, it's worth noting that the Assassin's Creed Shadows Assassin Outposts are fairly close to Hidden Paths. These are optional activities that yield Knowledge Points, as well as high-rarity gear. It's worth grabbing the loot from the nearby chests while you're investigating the documents in each area.
The map above shows the Assassin Outposts in the regions of Kii and Yamato
We've also marked down the location of the Meaning of the Blade quest
The Assassin's Creed Shadows Meaning of the Blade quest also follows the same theme where Naoe tries to look for clues about the Kakushiba Ikki
That does it for our guide on where to find all Assassin Outposts in Assassin's Creed Shadows. If you're planning to tackle the Meaning of the Blade quest, then you might be wondering if you should kill or forgive a certain character
Do you need more help as you continue your adventure throughout Sengoku Jidai era Japan? We've got you covered, so just take a look at our Assassin's Creed Shadows guides hub

With nearly every ninja clan roaring after our protagonist's blood
you'd think that the plot would have accelerated from its lazy norm to explosive new heights
The funny thing is that Miharu has started to care
Their relationship has evolved from one of obligation and dependency to a kindred bond where they each value the other's life over their own
The series worked surprisingly well when Miharu was an emotionless stone in the face of peril
Even if the “humor” of the predicament missed the mark sometimes
the balance gave the show novelty and breathed life and direction into its slower pacing
making emotional and irrational new choices in hopes of saving Yoite rather than erasing him
all it means is that a new problem has arisen
Miharu's apathy has now bled over into the series on the whole
turning it into an emotionally overwrought bog of narrative chaos with twenty different characters whose subplots don't matter one iota running from one episode to the next with no clear destination in sight
that's the funny thing: it is horribly sluggish
This is a shame because the series' high points have more than proven that there is a great story hiding here
what plays out is far less than what Nabari had started with
while still characterized well in scenes like Yoite's escape from the hospital during a Christmas blizzard
becomes so overwhelmingly the focus of the series that every other plot thread gets dropped on its backside
The side characters still have screen time to fill
The number of fights in this volume is painfully lacking even by the standards set by the first half
it comes at the cost of so many stern conversations from an inactive supporting cast that the end result comes off as being bored with this ninja apocalypse that it will get around to showing later
Nabari's greatest problem lies in its finale
Thanks to its rich characterizations and enticing visuals
the slow climb to the series climax will hold the interest of some audiences just fine
but it's hard to imagine anyone being pleased with its ending
All of the side characters' dark ambitions or soaring dreams for using the Shinrabansho seem to have been forgotten
Characters from every arc of the series converge on one battlefield
but all anticipations for what might occur are left in the dust as they spend most of the climax
(The abandonment of Aizawa and Kotaro's arcs is particularly maddening.) It's not an ending where nothing happens
and the inability of any character to change this
kills the momentum of what might have been
and it just isn't fulfilling on any level save for Miharu and Yoite's relationship
This was once the series' greatest point of intrigue
but at the cost of every other plot development
it's hard to make us care about it anymore
the standouts of the series are still the distinctive backgrounds and appealing character designs
to say nothing of the juicy fight animation
they deliver well.) A few cheats pop up here and there like blurring between extremes rather than drawing in-betweens
and full of rich details like the style differences between Raikou and Raimei's swordfighting
The further emergence of the Shinrabansho produces a blend of CG and texture mapping that is nothing special on a technical level and sometimes appears disjointed when the 2D and 3D elements blend
but is certainly entertaining to watch as kanji crawl
melt and dribble all over and around Miharu and bright green auras lash out violently in all directions
particularly in the quiet denouement of the final episode with its tender melodies and resounding chords
It is an excellent-looking series beginning to end and sweet on the ears to boot
Funimation's exceedingly liberal reversion helped rather than hindered the series in its first half
the writing tweaks downright rescue the series from a pit of writing cliches
Where the original script again wallows in repetitious expositonal dialogue
the English script smooths over every exchange with natural dialogue rich in character voice and adds insight to the long conversations rather than distorting them
Several embarrassingly cheesy one-liners and spiels on the part of baddies and companions alike are also taken out in favor of more genuine-sounding speeches
and the integrity of the characters' motivations is preserved if not enhanced
This is the saving grace for part two of Nabari
which is composed almost entirely of dialogue
The big exception to this is a key scene in which a samurai makes it clear that he wishes to commit seppuku but changes his mind after losing respect for his master…at which point his second violently tries to enforce the ritual. The dub oversimplifies this cultural element by implying that the second is more of an assassin and severely downplaying the allusion to ritual suicide
This may have been too substantial a change
but in light of many other drastic improvements
Acting performances remain strong in both languages with no singular standouts apart from perhaps Joel MacDonald's subdued but intense Yoite
DVD extras include the standard load of trailers and clean themes, along with a very entertaining English voice actor commentary
They discuss several series along with Nabari and settle all those rumors about the “special” relationship between Miharu and Yoite by confirming each and every one
newbie VA Joel MacDonald shares an anecdote that implies he'll be at many conventions in the future
Nabari no Ou has had trouble finding its audience since the beginning
but the novelty of its softer approach to ninja warfare was well-executed and made it stand out from the crowd
It's too bad that “different” doesn't always mean “better,” at least not here
and the further the series has slipped into emotional turmoil at the cost of good storytelling
the more the protagonist's token apathy relocates to the viewer

tightly packed rows of dishevelled wooden benches give a sense of the number of primary school children crammed into this room
They are surrounded by filthy walls and a weather-beaten corrugated ceiling
"There are many pupils but only three classrooms
so they have to pair classes," says Memuna Sandow
district assembly woman for the towns of Wulugu
Silinga and Nabari in the West Mamprusi region of northern Ghana
"The quality of teaching is very poor – teachers who are sent here from other places do not want to stay."
"There is very low school enrollment," Sandow adds
The children have to walk 6km to fetch water in the evenings; sometimes they are so tired they don't go to school the next day."
The barriers to education highlight the complex development challenges in this rural part of Ghana's northern savannah
The area's extreme poverty led to it being handpicked as the site of the new Millennium Village Project (MVP)
the integrated approach to rural development spearheaded by Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University's Earth Institute
The production of oil in southern Ghana has helped make its economy one of the fastest growing in the world
But the number of people living in poverty in the north has increased – by an estimated 1 million over the past 20 years
The majority of Ghana's 6 million people living below the poverty line are now in the north
launched this week by Ghana's new president John Dramani Mahama and UK international development secretary Andrew Mitchell
aims to address this gap by creating a millennium villages "cluster" in an area that cuts across two of the north's poorest regions
The scheme will target 34 communities with a total population of approximately 27,000 people
Maize farmers in Nabari. Photograph: Afua HirschLike the 13 other MVP sites – including one in southern Ghana – the project will attempt to provide a package of proven
science-based interventions for agriculture
Away from the pomp and ceremony of the launch – which attracted thousands of local residents and supporters of the ruling party – those involved in the project admit the scale of the challenge
"My visits to this region have been sobering," said Sachs
the furthest away from the growth areas of the economy."
"This region has a number of issues," said David Sunbo
"There is a more than 30km journey to access healthcare
and people run out of food for almost half of the year
You can drive 60km through the whole cluster without seeing any vehicles because the state of the roads is so bad."
The new MVP has $18.1m (£11.5m) funding from the UK's Department for International Development (DfID)
The money will be provided over five years
the first time the department has offered financial support for the project
and equates to roughly $90 a person being spent annually on the ground
The remaining spending – an estimated $60 a person annually – is from other sources
more than anyone has tried to be in the past
what the cost of providing primary services to lift people out of poverty really is," said Sachs
"At the moment we think it is $150 per person per year
which is really a very small amount."
director of monitoring and evaluation at Columbia University's Centre for Global Health and Economic Development
The new MVP will, for the first time, be independently evaluated. "We are proceeding cautiously – the proof is in the pudding," says Mitchell. Evaluation of the project, which has conducted baseline surveys of the 34 communities within the site, and 68 control communities selected for their similarity to the project sites, has been commissioned from Itad
Part of the emphasis on evaluation is to help project organisers achieve a proven model for development that can be scaled up to encompass whole regions and even countries
Photograph: Afua Hirsch"I don't believe this will work," says Jeremiah Imoro
a subsistence farmer who harvests four acres of maize every year
The food I grow is not enough and there is none left to sell for cash that we need to buy things
We have to go to the forest to chop wood and sell charcoal instead
then things would be better for me and my family."
But organisers say Imoro is exactly the kind of farmer who will benefit from the project
"We are taking a business approach to agriculture so that we are not continuously dependent on external support," said Sunbo
"We are giving farmers loans to pay for ploughing
fertiliser and seeds – they will pay it back and then the amount can be given back to them the next year
We also have in place a plan to expand the facilities for irrigation."
Mastering the business development needs of farmers is something Sachs admits the MVPs have struggled with
and although other projects will last 10 years
"We have to speed up our work on business development," says Sachs
it took three years to work on food production and agriculture
bringing in important help to agriculture sooner."
Many of the challenges in West Mamprusi relate to infrastructure
things the organisers say they must rely on the government to provide
The project site is not connected to the national grid and
except for a tiny scattering of solar panels
Population growth and a lack of family planning are major issues in West Mamprusi
straining already limited food supplies and making education unaffordable
The MVP has modest aims to increase contraception use among married women
Other targets are to increase the number of children sleeping under insecticide-treated bednets to 80%
and ensure 90% of children finish primary school
in line with the millennium development goals
Sachs is hopeful the project will show these goals can be accomplished through relatively small per capita spending
and we are trying to make a small amount of money go a long way."

The participants were invited by a local nonprofit organization
The Akame 48 Waterfalls comprises numerous waterfalls in a 4-kilometer gorge upstream of the Takigawa River
It is said to be where Iga ninjas trained to hone their skills
After praying for everyone’s safety at a temple near the entrance of the gorge
stepped into the waterfall basin following a monk blowing a conch shell
They crouched down into the cold water up to their shoulders for a few minutes while clasping their hands together
the participants then endured heat by walking barefoot over burning firewood
The families of the participants followed suit if they wished to do so
A 53-year-old man from Nagoya said he took part in the ritual with his friends to pray for his son to pass the national veterinarian exam
“The water was so painfully cold,” he said
“I tried to clear my mind while walking on the firewood

Bridgestone Corporation is currently restructuring its non-tyre Diversified Products business and has announced its intention to close a factory in Japan as part of consolidation efforts related to production of automotive seat pads
It will close the Bridgestone Chemitech plant in Ageo
Saitama Prefecture in the fourth quarter of 2023 and consolidate operations within the three remaining facilities dedicated to automotive seat pad production – Bridgestone Chemitech’s Nabari and Hofu sites as well as Bridgestone Diversified Chemical Products’ Tosu plant
Bridgestone expects all of these “highly skilled” employees to continue working for Bridgestone Chemitech
The company anticipates that its closure plans will only have a minor impact on its consolidated financial results for 2021

While there have been many great baseball anime in the past
is the only one that focuses on the strategy of baseball
it also emphasizes other elements like teamwork and friendship
but it takes its suspense from the game itself
Every single pitch is narrated and explained
if you don't have a greater appreciation for the sport
then at least you'll have a deeper understanding
The constant communication between the players makes you feel like you're part of the team
I have so much more respect for whiney little Mihashi that I no longer feel like punching him in the face
And his irritatingly endless search for validation
because no matter how annoying of a human he may be
it's hard being the player that's either the hero or the villain in any given game
was created by people who love and respect baseball
Even the commentary from the cheering squad reflects a strong love of the sport
and it makes every episode really exciting
I never really thought that a show could drag out one game into multiple episodes and still be interesting
One thing that really helps the pacing is that the show is never one-sided
It doesn't just focus on Abe and Mihashi—it also gives you insight into the minds of the other players
and all the insecurities that they have about the game
and effort on making the game play look amazing that they really didn't care about anything else
They re-use the same shot of the band a billion times
and there couldn't have been more than two different shots of the crowd
I don't need them to animate every clarinetist's finger movements from a dozen angles
but I would like enough variation to not make it so blindingly obvious that they did not care
The hero of the series is an aloof teenager who can't be bothered to care about anything
His apathy continues even after he discovers that he has a secret ninja power within him—basically
so plenty of other ninjas are now hankering for whatever secret is inside him
Aided by his English teacher and a few buddies (also ninjas)
he reluctantly embraces his newfound lifestyle and fights off bad guys along the way
and although it never becomes exciting to the point where you're glued to the edge of your seat
it's good enough to whittle a few hours off your weekend
The only problem is that the series doesn't seem to have confidence in its own storytelling abilities
It throws in tired jokes at crucial moments and goes for cheap gags instead of maintaining serious dialogue
By the end of the first half of the first episode
we can already tell the writers' favorite joke—the aloof teenager cares so little about the events around him that he constantly disappears while people are talking to him
Every time someone tries to have a heartfelt conversation with him
He disappears because he's aloof and he doesn't care
Which begs the question—why should any of us care
If there is one thing worth noting about the series
the backgrounds look like they were taken from a quaint children's storybook
you have generic-looking anime ninjas leaping around foggy cities
the palette seems so washed out that it's distracting
it's not entirely clear what they were going for
The settings aren't particularly whimsical or magical
so the artistic reasoning behind the choice isn't entirely obvious
Although I can appreciate the muscle-headed beat-fest that is Dragon Ball Z
but compared to some of the shenanigans that happen in Z
because it's not so obsessed with one-upping itself with crazy powers and super dragon balls
Goku is just some scrappy kid who really doesn't know much about life
and ends up learning about these dragon balls for the first time
and although you're not going to get the same crisp lines you'd see in a modern production
My only regret is that they weren't able to do some magic with the Japanese audio
It's certainly great having the original language track with subtitles
even if it sounds a flat coming out of my speakers
This week's shelves belong to AliA
I'm hoping to eventually get a larger collection of figures and DVDs

it looks as though a bamboo shoot has sprouted a shovel midway up its trunk
which had been left behind two years earlier
and lifted it to a height of about 2 meters
which produces bamboo lights and other bamboo products
The group usually harvests bamboo from the grove with the cooperation of the landowner
when a member of the group went to cut some bamboo
that individual noticed a shovel about 1 meter long and weighing about 1 kilogram “floating” almost parallel to the ground
The shovel turned out to be one that had been left behind after the group dug up bamboo shoots in the spring of 2020
