are plenty of reasons to step off the train at busy Nagoya Station from great eating and lively nightlife to ancient shrines and fortifications restored after the bombing raids of WWII.   Though large areas of the ancient city were destroyed during WWII Nagoya still manages to hit the sweet spot between old and new with plenty of traditional culture dotted around its neon-lit cityscape.  this is one of Japan’s most vibrant and modern yet laid-back industrialized cities Here are the top 13 things to do in Nagoya Founded more than 1900 years ago, Atsuta-jingū is one of Japan’s most sacred Shintō shrines observing worshippers going about their business.  Some nine million devotees come here each year to pay homage at the shrine housing the ancient sword known as Kusanagi-no-tsurugi This is one of the Three Sacred Treasures that form the revered Imperial Regalia – legend has it that the sword was handed to the imperial family by Amaterasu Omikami Detour: Visitors are not permitted to view the sacred sword or enter the temple, but you can see other famous swords at the shrine’s Kusanagi-kan museum, and the Bunkaden Treasure Hall displaying items from a collection of more than 4000 Tokugawa-era swords The collection at the respected Tokugawa Art Museum includes some 10,000 priceless artworks Among its treasures are nō masks from medieval dance-dramas Its most famous exhibit is the 12th-century scroll of The Tale of Genji This is the oldest surviving pictorial version of Japan’s oldest novel it’s only displayed once a year in late November; at other times you must make do with a video recording.  Planning tip: Don’t miss the museum’s magnificent Japanese garden, Tokugawa-en a contemporary reconstruction of a garden destroyed in 1945 bridges and water features – wrapped around a traditional-style teahouse – is simply superb Founded back in 1615, Nagoya-jō is the city’s showpiece castle it was destroyed during WWII but reconstructed using steel and concrete in 1959 While you can admire the main keep from outside the interior has been closed to the public for years after its structure was deemed vulnerable to earthquakes There are plans to demolish the keep and rebuild it in timber using traditional Japanese woodcrafting techniques staying faithful to the castle’s original design which was recorded in early survey documents so there is no specific schedule for the project.  It’s still well worth visiting Nagoya-jō to view the 17th-century Honmaru Palace this was the exclusive domain of the city’s feudal lords and samurai before being destroyed during WWII A remarkable reconstruction project in 2009 restored the palace to its original grandeur and Edo-period plans and historical records.  you can see 31 straw-scented tatami-floored rooms with shoji (latticed paper doors) and gold-leaf-gilded fusuma sliding screens It gives a powerful sense of the refined but regimented lives of its Edo-period occupants.  with a number of quaint teahouses that you can explore Close to the city planetarium, the Nagoya City Art Museum is housed in a striking modern building designed by renowned architect Kisho Kurokawa This respected art museum features a collection of around 8500 artworks from across the world.  Highlights include masterpieces by artists such as Frida Kahlo and several key Mexican Renaissance painters as well as contemporary art and works by Japanese artists The museum’s architecture is a work of art in itself offering a visually engaging setting for diverse exhibitions.  Detour: For a different perspective on the local art scene, visit the Noritake Garden Gallery sculptures and ceramic works in an attractive parkside setting on the site of a former ceramics factory.  If you’re in the market for a pair of secondhand cowboy boots a paisley shirt or a discount Vivienne Westwood jacket you’re in luck in Nagoya’s Ōsu district.  The area is home to hundreds of cool vintage boutiques Be sure to check out the shops tucked away in narrow alleyways off the main streets and take a moment to admire the vibrant street art.  Nagoyans love their food and are prepared to line up around the block to get it Be sure to try some of the popular foods of Nagoya including udon and kishimen noodles and miso-katsu (miso sauce poured over fried pork cutlets).  Offering a Nagoya take on tonkatsu (deep-fried pork cutlets), Yabaton Honten is famed for its miso-katsu, slathered in a savory miso-based sauce. For soupy miso-nikomi udon, another Nagoya speciality, check out the original branch of Yamamotoya Sōhonke Honke.  Planning tip: Many of Nagoya’s most iconic restaurants don’t take reservations; to avoid waiting an hour (or more) in line at peak times plan for a slightly earlier or later dinner In Nagoya, there’s no name more famous than Toyota, the automobile giant that produced its first car here in 1936. At the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry & Technology you’ll learn how Toyota was originally founded in 1919 as a weaving machine company – yes Alongside displays of Toyotas from all eras you can see fascinating demonstrations showing how modern cars are assembled from parts pressed from sheet metal to the finished product from the specialist bots that work the assembly lines to mechanical maestros playing the violin and a deep-freeze lab with a manmade aurora borealis.  If you have kids in tow, good luck saying no to a trip to Legoland Japan This phenomenally popular theme park is set by the coast to the south of Nagoya and you can easily fill a day (or days) here with kid and kid-at-heart-friendly entertainment.  Highlights include miniature Lego recreations of Japanese cities live stage performances and fun-filled theme-park rides The on-site resort offers plenty of hotel and dining package options that will keep kids beaming from ear to ear Planning tip: Get to Legoland on the Aonami underground line; the park is a five-minute walk from Kinjofuto Station Most of the action is centered on the shopping area around Sakae’s station which morphs into a nightlife haunt as offices close.  Sakae has a familiar entertainment district setup, with blinking neon signs and a staggering array of bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants, stacked up inside high-rise buildings. For a slightly different mood, head underground to the Central Park mall for subterranean shopping and casual dining Planning tip: Nearby Nishiki is another popular nightlife district Its narrow alleyways are filled with old-style izakayas offering a more intimate and traditional Japanese nightlife experience.  Sakae is also home to some of Nagoya’s best-known landmarks the Chubu Electric Power Mirai Tower (formerly Nagoya TV Tower) was the first radio tower of its type in Japan pre-dating the more famous towers in Tokyo For the best view in town, head for the Sky Promenade at Midland Square this is Japan’s tallest open-air observation deck and you can enjoy 360-degree views over the city.  The UFO-like Oasis 21 is another contemporary architectural landmark restaurants and a popular shopping complex set beneath an angled disk that is illuminated each evening.  Then there is the 52m-high (171ft) Ferris wheel, Sky Boat a unique construction built into the side of the Sunshine Sakae building when the framework and the street below are brightly illuminated.  Planning tip: It’s easy to explore Nagoya on the subway system with six lines and stops and routes clearly signposted in English and Japanese Nagoyajo (for the castle) and Ōzone (for the Tokugawa Art Museum).  If you’re a fan of the whimsical storytelling of Studio Ghibli, then we probably don’t need to tell you about Ghibli Park a brand new attraction dedicated to the animation studio’s much-loved anime films.  don’t come expecting amusement park rides; instead visitors wander through a fantasy landscape featuring recreations of famous Studio Ghibli scenes on the site where Aichi province hosted the World Expo in 2005 About 25km (15.5 miles) north of Nagoya, the town of Inuyama is the setting for the eye-catching Inuyama-jō castle it remains one of Japan’s oldest surviving wooden castles.  the scenic provincial capital of Gifu is a sprawling industrialized city centered on a cluster of atmospheric historical sights.  Planning tip: Get to Gifu from Nagoya on Japan Railways' convenient JR Limited Express Hida train; it leaves Nagoya Station ten times a day This article was adapted from Lonely Planet’s Japan guidebook, published in March 2024. its signature dish of miso-stewed “udon” noodles and other offerings the fifth-generation head of Okute Yamamotoya faced strong opposition from his family and others when he announced plans set up branches outside Japan His motivation was two-fold: ensuring the survival of the family business and sharing his passion for Nagoya’s culinary culture--centering around the iconic miso udon dish--with the world where a Japanese chef can be seen daily skillfully making noodles under a sign reading “Nagoya-style handmade udon shop Yamamotoya” in Cantonese The outlet is in the sprawling Harbor City shopping complex in the former British colony People are often seen admiring the exquisite artistry of noodle making through a glass window as happens at the flagship store in Nagoya The Hong Kong shop serves authentic Nagoya cuisine such as bowls of miso-stewed udon and “oden” pots with “haccho miso” from Okazaki a signature dish of miso udon with chicken and an egg costs 88 Hong Kong dollars (1,800 yen Although priced slightly higher than in Japan the branch attracts a steady flow of patrons It welcomes an average of 770 customers daily on weekends The outlet is now vying for the top spot on a leading review site in China for the best Japanese restaurant in Hong Kong Aoki believes it is Yamamotoya’s mission to preserve the traditional cuisine of Nagoya The first branch overseas opened in Hong Kong in 2023 A lot was riding on Aoki’s decision to expand the family business outside Japan Aoki worked at a construction machinery vendor and was used to closing deals with international buyers to help him map out a secure future for the eatery He fretted over “the dwindling number of stomachs needing to be fed due to Japan’s shrinking population” and felt the only way forward was to set up outlets overseas it will be difficult to survive,” he decided Aoki watched with dismay as other restaurant operators wore themselves out competing for just a fraction of a point in restaurant ratings on search websites He already knew from his childhood that his family’s udon was tasty “I wanted people the world over to notice our quality dishes,” he said His father and other staff members were initially very hesitant about Aoki’s expansion plans for the locally rooted shop They peppered him with talk about “significant risks” and “the possibility regional tastes may not be accepted abroad.” “I want this restaurant to survive for the next 100 years.” “Protecting something does not necessarily mean it should remain unchanged,” he said One change came in the form of foreign nationals turning up at Okute Yamamotoya in Nagoya Aoki added miso-broth udon using local chicken and other certified halal dishes to the menu to cater to Muslim customers His father and the other holdouts gradually let go of their objections and threw their support around Aoki Aoki picked Hong Kong because it is home to a more diverse range of ethnic groups than other Asian countries and regions Yamamotoya outsourced the store’s management to a local franchise company that Aoki had connections with through a friend who runs a food wholesaler including travel expenses and local staff training “We made a smaller investment than we could have imagined,” Aoki said “What frightened us most was the branch failing and undermining the brand value our family had refined and conserved over so many decades.” The two outlets in Hong Kong are now thriving as locals chow down on genuine Nagoya-style dishes Customers at both stores get an up-close view of noodles being prepared by hand The two branches currently chalk up annual sales of 1 billion yen more than six times the turnover of the flagship restaurant in Japan The third overseas branch of Yamamotoya is expected to start operations in Jakarta by the end of January Halal meals will be served as Indonesia boasts the world’s largest Muslim population The latest branch occupies an entire three-story building Grilled Hida beef and other novel dishes were developed to cater to local tastes Aoki was busy during the year-end traveling between Nagoya and Jakarta to prepare for opening the branch “We will be showing off the appeal of Japan through Nagoya’s culinary culture,” Aoki said TASTE OF LIFE: Udon noodles in cold soup flavored with egoma: Beat the summer heat with a dish that is simple to make TASTE OF LIFE/ Udon
