InternationalYen Heads Toward 160 as Ueda Seen as Dovish, Strategists SayBy Matthew Burgess and Winnie HsuPublished: December 18, 2024 at 11:09PM EST
(Bloomberg) -- The yen looks set to weaken past 160 per dollar after the Bank of Japan skipped a potential hike and Governor Kazuo Ueda said the central bank isn’t in a rush to raise rates, according to strategists.
The cautious BOJ, compared with the hawkish Fed, may give further impetus for carry traders to bet on future yen weakness, Saxo Markets says. Still, officials may push back on yen weakness around the 160 level, according to Brown Brothers Harriman.
Here is a selection of comments from strategists:
Brown Brothers Harriman (Elias Haddad, senior strategist in London)
160 is up next for USD/JPY. Japanese officials will likely ramp-up currency jawboning as we approach intervention zone around 160.
Ueda reiterated the central bank will continue to hike if its forecasts are realized, though cautioned it’s in no rush given the uncertainty over US policy and lack of information on wages. Ueda added the wage trend will be clear in March or April, suggesting the BOJ could wait until then to raise rates again.
Saxo Markets (Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist in Singapore)
Ueda has actually turned dovish, saying the inflationary trend is slow and even sounded unconvinced about the ongoing wage-price spiral. This seems to be a pushback on January rate hike expectations as well, as spring wage negotiations would only be clearer by March at the earliest.
USD/JPY has its eyes on 160 now, especially with thinner liquidity in the weeks ahead.
The Fed’s hawkish tilt and BOJ’s pause could bring fresh reasons for yen traders to “carry” on. The only thing in the way of new carry trades is heightened volatility, which means USD/JPY could face a firm resistance at 160, if not before.
Mizuho Securities (Shoki Omori, chief Japan desk strategist in Tokyo)
The market is perceiving Ueda’s remarks on waiting for wage data means a rate hike is unlikely. BOJ however uses surveys to help guide its expectations on wages and seems to think a January hike is not off the table. While the Bank of Japan may have maintained its flexibility, the market may have become skeptical and took the press conference as too dove or slow to hike rates.
Carry traders are coming back and its likely USD/JPY tests 158 in the coming months. That level as well as 160 have risks of intervention.
Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (Eugenia Victorino, head of Asia strategy in Singapore)
With the Fed more hawkish into 2025, it gives more room for BOJ to continue tightening next year, delivering another hike as early as January. Yet, USD/JPY is still dominated by the Fed outlook. Until the market pulls back from the outsized reaction from the Fed meeting last night, there is very little that can dampen USD/JPY below 154.50.
Credit Agricole CIB (David Forrester, senior strategist in Singapore)
The BOJ has said it needs to continue to monitor in the impacts of movements in financial and the exchange-rate markets on the economy, but there is no mention of a weak yen leading to upside risks to inflation. Importantly, USD/JPY is above 155 and what we think is the BOJ’s comfort zone.
T&D Asset Management (Hiroshi Namioka, chief strategist and fund manager in Tokyo)
Despite the lack of a rate hike, the BOJ’s review document could be boosting Japan’s financial shares, which rose in early afternoon trading. The stock market may have found clues in the review that monetary policy will gradually move away from easing in future, supporting lenders.

12:50 JST, February 10, 2025 (updated at 16:30 JST)
TOKYO, Feb 10 (Reuters) – Japan’s Nikkei share average ended nearly flat on Monday as investors weighed fresh U.S. tariff threats, although a smooth meeting between Japan’s prime minister and U.S. President Donald Trump eased some investor concerns.
The Nikkei closed up just 0.04% at 38,801.17 after a choppy session, while the broader Topix shed 0.2% to sit at 2,733.01.
Steelmakers narrowed losses to end down 0.2% with Nippon Steel sliding 0.5%, after Trump said he would announce new 25% tariffs on Monday on all U.S. steel and aluminum imports.
While a negative for companies that export steel and aluminum to the United States, similar tariffs were implemented during Trump’s first time in office, limiting the surprise factor, said Tomo Kinoshita, global market strategist at Invesco Asset Management Japan.
“However, I think caution towards additional tariffs… will continue, and financial markets will likely continue to be sensitive,” he said.
Investors were relieved after Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s first White House summit on Friday passed without major incident.
The meeting between Ishiba and Trump came off well, offering some support to Japanese equities, said Hiroshi Namioka, chief strategist at T&D Asset Management.
The United States has yet to announce any tariffs specifically targeting Japan, and while Trump pressed Ishiba to close Japan’s annual trade surplus with Washington, he expressed optimism this could be done quickly.
“When looking at the global picture, I believe Japan is in quite a good position,” said Namioka.
Japanese markets will be closed on Tuesday for a public holiday.
Among individual shares, earnings produced some of the biggest percentage winners, with Taiyo Yuden surging 22.1% after the firm announced an upward revision to its earnings forecast on Friday.
E-commerce and gaming company DeNA climbed 23.1%, and Fujikura, which makes fibers used by data centers, jumped 7.1%.
Heavyweights Fast Retailing and SoftBank Group dragged on the Nikkei, declining 1.2% and 1.9%, respectively.

An efficient method to prepare organomagnesium intermediates having a protected azido group is reported
Protection of azido groups with di-(tert-butyl)(4-(dimethylamino)phenylphosphine (amphos) and following iodine–magnesium exchange realized the preparation of organomagnesium intermediates
which served in the synthesis of diverse azides by transformation with various electrophiles followed by deprotection with elemental sulfur
click reactions of azides with alkynes enabled synthesizing a wide variety of 1,2,3-triazoles
Although this elegant method allowed us to synthesize a limited variety of 4-substituted phenyl azides
a new approach to prepare carbanions bearing masked azide moieties leading to a wide array of azides is sought after
we describe an efficient method to prepare organomagnesium intermediates by iodine–magnesium exchange with a turbo Grignard reagent after the phosphazide formation of iodine-substituted azides
enabling facile synthesis of diverse 1,2,3-triazoles by Grignard reactions and following CuAAC reactions
Metalation using tert-butyllithium resulted in a complex mixture of products
(A) Synthesis of 7a from 6a with or without the protection of the azido group
(B) Screening reagents for the iodine–metal exchange
A wide range of azides 8 were successfully synthesized by the addition of electrophiles to the organomagnesium intermediate prepared in situ from azide 6a (Figure 3)
Various aldehydes 9 efficiently reacted with the organomagnesium intermediate
enabling us to synthesize the corresponding alcohols 8a–8e in good yields
Tertiary alcohol 8f or 8g was prepared from azide 6a using acetone (10a) or α,α,α-trifluoroacetophenone (10b)
Allylation of the Grignard reagent prepared from 6a took place to afford the azide 8h after deprotection with elemental sulfur
Bromide 8i was synthesized by bromination of the carbanion with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS)
Synthesis of azides 8 from azide 6a and various electrophiles
We succeeded in the synthesis of aldehydes 7b–7f from a range of azides 6 through phosphazide formation, iodine–magnesium exchange, formylation with DMF, and deprotection with S8 (Figure 4)
4-formyl- or 3-formylphenyl azide 7b or 7c were prepared from 4-iodo- or 3-iodophenyl azide (6b or 6c)
We accomplished the synthesis of trisubstituted benzene 7d from 4-azido-3-methylphenyl iodide (6d) through the phosphazide formation of the ortho methyl-substituted phenyl azide moiety
When using 4-azido-2-chlorophenyl iodide (6e)
and deprotection proceeded smoothly for furnishing aldehyde 7e without damaging aldehyde
we achieved the preparation of the carbanion intermediate having an alkyl azide moiety from azide 6f through phosphazide formation and subsequent iodine–magnesium exchange
which successfully served in formylation with DMF
Synthesis of azides 7 from various azides 6
Subsequent azidation of the resulting arylboron 14
we succeeded in the transformation of aryl iodide 6g via phosphazide formation and the iodine–magnesium exchange to provide benzaldehyde 7g
Reductive amination of aldehyde 7a also took place avoiding the reduction of the azido group
further transformations enabled us to diversify azides after reactions of azide-substituted carbanion equivalents
Amino alcohols 20a–20d were efficiently synthesized from azides by transformations of carbanions through the protection of azido groups followed by the Staudinger reduction (Figure 7). We achieved the synthesis of amino alcohol 20a from azide 8a with tri-(n-butyl)phosphonium tetrafluoroborate in the presence of triethylamine (Meguro et al., 2017)
The Grignard reaction of azide-substituted carbanion equivalents with aldehyde 9a and the following Staudinger reduction realized the preparation of a number of amino alcohols 20b–20d in good yields
Considering the pivotal role of amines and alcohols in the preparation of azaheterocycles
the synthesis of amino alcohols from iodine-substituted azides is poised to make significant contributions to the field of synthetic organic chemistry
we succeeded in the preparation of triazole 21a by the CuAAC reaction with alkyne 15b bearing an ester moiety
This approach is clearly advantageous over a synthetic route without azide protection
as esters can readily react with carbanions like Grignard reagents
the synthesis of triazole 21a from azide 6g
and alkyne 15b was achieved in short steps
triazole 21b was efficiently prepared from azide 6d
We achieved the synthesis of triazole 21c bearing an estradiol scaffold from 4-iodophenyl azide (6b)
and ethinyl estradiol (15c) by a simple protocol through phosphazide formation

InvestingJapan Stocks Have Best Week Since 2020 as Exporters Gain on YenBy Yasutaka TamuraUpdated: August 16, 2024 at 2:44AM EDT
(Bloomberg) -- Japanese stocks posted their biggest weekly advance in more than four years as the nation’s benchmark indexes continued to claw back losses from the recent rout, led by electronics makers and banks.
The Nikkei 225 Stock Average climbed 3.6%, benefiting from a better economic outlook in the US and the yen’s retreat back toward 150 versus the dollar, which helps support the earnings of exporters. The broader Topix advanced 3%.
“Stocks that saw a huge selloff in the past month are being bought back as the market calms down from the rout,” said Hiroshi Namioka, chief strategist at T&D Asset Management Co. in Tokyo.
Hitachi Ltd. and Toyota Motor Corp. were among the major contributors to the Topix’s advance, while semiconductor-related names like Tokyo Electron Ltd. and Advantest Corp. also climbed.
Bruce Kirk, chief Japan equity strategist at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., recommends investors take advantage of last week’s correction to buy, as the latest selloff was more technical than driven by fundamentals. Global investors were net buyers of Japanese stocks in the week ending Aug. 9, with gross purchases reaching a record, according to preliminary finance ministry data.
The yen’s slump of about 1.5% this week has provided support for the stock market amid signs carry trades are staging a comeback. Nomura Holdings Inc. has seen a variety of investors start borrowing the yen again to invest the proceeds elsewhere in higher-yielding assets.
All 33 of the Topix’s industry sub-indexes advanced weekly as the equity market stabilizes from last week’s worst drop since October 1987. Wall Street’s climb overnight added fuel to the rally after US data on retail spending and the labor market underscored the strength of the world’s largest economy.

“I just want to hug somebody!” So “I kind of have an understanding of what you guys are going through,” Yazzie told the Chinle High School Class of 2021 during his keynote address Saturday
Like all the graduation speeches this year
the keynote was recorded remotely and broadcast on KTNN during the drive-thru graduation event

Yazzie told the grads he had no role models in engineering growing up and

“they didn’t look like me.” Growing up in a place like Holbrook
“You can sometimes limit your dreams,” he told the virtual audience from his Los Angeles apartment
“I’ve often had to imagine myself in places I’ve never been,” he said

Yazzie challenged the teens to visualize themselves in their own wildest dreams — and then craft a plan to get there
The Class of 2021 has already faced and overcome an incredible obstacle — an entire school year
in person for over a year when they congregated in the parking lot to line their vehicles up for the parade Saturday afternoon
“This reunion in the parking lot is the bigger story here,” opined music teacher Eric Swanson
watching the kids race to spend a little time with their friends before they had to get in their cars and line up
Alandria Yazzie hung out with her buddy Lainy Burke up until the authorities issued the call to get in the cars and start processing
The young women said they have known each other since elementary school
and it was the first time they had seen each other in person since COVID hit
said she was headed to automotive school; Yazzie will go to college
The few teachers who attended the event were almost as excited to see the students as the students were to see each other
“They have all grown since we last saw them in person,” said Athletic Director Shaun Martin
“They all looked outstanding in their gowns with either traditional or formal outfits underneath.”
Navajo language and culture teacher Irene Bizahaloni was a little more blunt
“I think some of them have spent the whole pandemic eating.”
Biz” to a generation of kids who couldn’t pronounce her name
also called out her fellow teachers for not being there
there were still a few open chairs along the parade route
“This is the most important day in these kids’ lives so far,” she said
“We haven’t been able all year to interact with them in the hallway
As the graduates got back in their cars after receiving their diplomas and slowly drove away from their alma mater for the last time
she sprinted to lean in the windows and congratulate them
but privately confided graduation is the saddest day of the year for her
“They’re like your own little babies under your wings
I hope they know they can always come back and ask us for help.”
One lesson the 190 members of the Class of 2021 have learned

TOKYO, Dec 16 (Reuters) – Japan’s Nikkei share average ticked lower to close nearly flat on Monday, as caution ahead of major central bank meetings this week largely trumped a rise in heavyweight chip-related shares.
12:30 JST, December 16, 2024 (updated at 17:00 JST)
The Nikkei erased early gains to close down 0.03% at 39,457.49, while the broader Topix shed 0.3% to 2,738.33.
Isuzu Motors, up 1.9%, was among exporter shares to gain on a softer yen, although the impact of the weaker currency was limited as investors adjusted positions.
Toyota slipped 0.2%, Honda Motor fell 0.5%, and Mitsubishi Motors dropped 0.9%.
The yen was last hovering around 153.73 per U.S$. , struggling to recover from its worst week since September.
Chip-related shares tracked their U.S. peers higher, after the Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index surged 3.4% on Friday amid an otherwise subdued session on Wall Street.
Chip-testing equipment maker Advantest, an Nvidia supplier, gave the biggest overall lift with a 1.9% rise.
Socionext rallied 8.1% to become the top percentage gainer on the benchmark. However, Tokyo Electron slipped into the red in afternoon trade, falling 0.9%.
Among other major shares, artificial intelligence-focused startup investor SoftBank Group advanced 1% and Chugai Pharmaceutical climbed 2.7%.

InternationalTokyo Electron Leads Japan Tech Selloff on China Chip Curb FearsBy Yasutaka TamuraPublished: July 17, 2024 at 12:39AM EDT
(Bloomberg) -- Tokyo Electron Ltd. shares tumbled by the most in three months after Bloomberg reported US discussions about using its most severe trade restrictions to curb China’s access to advanced semiconductor technology. The Nikkei stock gage also slid, reversing earlier gains.
The Biden administration has told allies that it’s considering invoking the foreign direct product rule on companies such as Japan’s Tokyo Electron and the Netherlands’ ASML Holding NV that supply Chinese chip firms, people familiar with recent discussions said. The rule lets the country impose controls on foreign-made products that use even the tiniest amount of American technology.
Shares in Japan’s biggest semiconductor equipment maker fell by as much as 8.3%, its biggest intraday fall in three months on Wednesday. Shares of Screen Holdings Co. declined 5.1%, Disco Corp. shed 4.1% and Advantest Corp. fell as much as 2.5%.
Tokyo Electron relies on China for more than 20% of its sales, said T&D Asset Management Chief Strategist Hiroshi Namioka. “The fact that it’s at the center of this case is likely to weigh on the stock price,” he said.
Tokyo Electron and ASML supply key chipmaking machinery, as do US firms Applied Materials Inc., Lam Research Corp. and KLA Corp. The US is presenting the idea to officials in Tokyo and the Hague as an increasingly likely outcome if the countries don’t tighten their own China measures, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the deliberations are private.

pushing them to interact with visitors from around the world when big events are held
"It's fun to interact with people from abroad
I have always liked inviting people to stay over at my house
and (event homestays) have given me a chance to become more aware of other countries and their cultures," said Kaminaga

known in Japan as "minpaku," has gained attention since a law legalizing it took effect in June 2018 to relieve a shortage of hotel rooms in the wake of inbound tourism boom
The law allows people to rent their homes or space in their homes to paying guests for up to 180 days a year after notifying their municipalities
There are other avenues to start a regular minpaku business
but these require time and effort to meet local rules
the procedure to offer "event minpaku" is much simpler
since residents can only take one group of guests during an event
is located conveniently between Tokyo and Narita airport
Namioka hopes providing a new lodging experience
will influence more travelers to stay overnight instead of taking a day trip or simply passing by
"Event minpaku is a win-win for both residents and visitors
It gives residents the opportunity to interact with people from around the world
it meets a demand from travelers who wish to experience the lifestyles in the country
or stay over for a cheap price," Namioka said
Chiba looked for people to open their doors at three events this year
including the Red Bull Air Race world championship in September and a fencing World Cup event in December
Kaminaga is confident he has found his passion since he became a host on the advice of his son Takashi
he had wanted his father to engage in something new ever since he retired from work many years ago
Minpaku was also a perfect way for him to get close to his father again
"There are rooms in the house that are not being used
and it is exciting to see guests from around the world stay at the house where I lived for a long time," Takashi said

"My father and I had grown apart since I moved out after university and started my own family
But doing this together has also given us a chance to communicate regularly."
Following rounds of cleanups and decluttering
Takashi and a colleague listed Kaminaga's house on a website run by Airbnb Inc.
the world's largest broker of private lodging for tourists
They have charged between 3,000 and 4,000 yen ($27 and $36) per guest a night
When the Kaminagas hosted two guests from Ukraine -- a taekwondo competitor and her father
they introduced them to a Japanese conveyer-belt sushi restaurant and took them shopping at a 100-yen store among other places
"There was nothing difficult about hosting guests from abroad
and language wasn't such a big problem because you can always communicate with your heart," Kaminaga said
"It's a relief to know you can make friends from around the world without having to travel."
Takashi said he recalls hearing his guest calling his father her "father in Japan." They still continue to keep in touch by exchanging messages on social media
Chiba will stage three sports -- taekwondo
fencing and wrestling -- during the July 24-Aug
Chiba has organized workshops to explain the procedure to list rooms online
Lessons introducing key English phrases are also held to enhance smooth communication
have been implemented on more than 50 occasions
such as marathons and cherry blossom festivals
It came into use at this autumn's Rugby World Cup held across Japan
especially in host cities that were unaccustomed to staging events
had a total of about 170 people stay at residents' homes when it staged two pool matches
also requested support from residents because the city can only accommodate about 1,400 people despite hosting matches at its 16,000-seat venue
A visitor from Germany who was hosted by locals in the Iwate Prefecture city said the stay was an "authentic Japan experience" despite needing to refer to a translation app on his smartphone to communicate
who still recalls the excitement he felt during the previous Tokyo Games in 1964
looks to continue building on his new-found passion even after next year's Olympics and Paralympics
"Meeting new people from around the world and simply going for dinner is something I want to keep doing," he said

No Comments on Shoot! Goal to the Future Ep 8: Release Date, Speculations, Watch Online
Goal to the Future didn’t feature much action
It was mostly a comedic episode with few developments in the characters
It showed us the old traditions of the Kakegawa High Soccer team when Kamiya was in the playing squad
This series also seems to over-emphasize the sexual orientations of the characters to a point where it starts to feel dumb and unnecessary
The whole episode felt predictable with all the traditions and stuff
Goal to the Future is titled “Thread.” Based on where the seventh episode ended
we may conclude that we will get to see all the teams in the training camp held at Kakegawa High
There may also be some matches between the team that could be shown
we could vaguely speculate that the Kakegawa High team will all come together and work as a unit
connected by a “thread” as if they’re beads in a necklace
Goal to the Future is not on break this week
The episode will be released as per schedule
The episode started with Namioka and coach Kamiya talking about some traditions
the team is told that they will have a training camp at their school and sleep in the gymnasium
It skips to Namioka telling the guys a horror story about a white ghost
Jo had a dream where he assisted Tsuji with a goal
He went out to the field where Tsuji was practicing to shoot
Subaru followed him from a distance as he woke up after Jo left
Tsuji told jo that he quit soccer because he couldn’t shoot anymore
They were talking when a white figure from Namioka’s story sneaked right behind Subaru
He screamed loud enough to get Tusji and Jo’s attention
The security guard came in and gave all of them a good scolding
It was coach Kamiya who dressed up as a ghost because that’s what their tradition was
The next day they started their practice 2 Vs
Jo started thinking out loud about what the coach told him
Subaru has a flashback of Andrea saying they can’t put all the fault on one person
Kamiya tells Namioka that making them play without any practice match before it is just a bet
He then tells everyone to steal the ball from him
he dodges them while telling them their weaknesses
They are handed their jerseys for their match
the most prestigious jersey number in soccer
Goal to the Future is a sequel anime series of the 1990 Shoot
Noriyuki Nakamura is directing the series at EMT Squared with Mitsutaka Hirota writing the scripts
and Yukiko Akiyama designing the characters
It follows the next generation of Kakegawa High’s legendary soccer club with Atsushi Kamiya as their coach
The story revolves around the protagonist Hideto Tsuji and the new team giving rise to another epic saga
