ISE FoodsMain activity: Distributed solar power generationCommissioning: 2017
we started up our first solar power plant in Japan in Nanao
located on the Noto Peninsula on the country’s west coast
it generates enough power to serve 9,000 Japanese households through more than 80,000 high efficiency solar panels
Since the 2011 Fukushima disaster and the ensuing shut-down of the country’s nuclear power plants
the Japanese government has introduced policies to encourage the development of renewable energies
It was with this in mind that the Nanao PV power plant was built
The first TotalEnergies solar farm in Japan
it was constructed on brownfield land owned by the agri-food group ISE
mainly because of the geological and climate constraints
the site is exposed to the risk of earthquakes and experiences heavy rainfall as well as strong winds and snow
The challenge was therefore to build a solar plant on a small site that could effectively generate power despite low levels of sunshine and withstand the elements for more than 20 years
We responded by using solar panels able to produce 45% more energy than conventional solar panels
meaning the plant achieves high output despite limited sunshine
which was crucial for the viability of the project
The start-up of the Nanao power plant marked an important milestone in our history in Japan
This history is one of the cornerstones of our future in the country and helps strengthen our relationships with Japanese companies and civil society
we protected a hill considered to be one of the most sacred places in Japan
This series sounds so fun on paper (curses! evil relatives! demon wars! shikigami! and vampires?!), but the execution is mostly giving “We have My Happy Marriage at home.”
I've spent the day trying to figure out why The Ayakashi Hunter's Tainted Bride left me so cold
overly polished look that tends to smooth out any unique edges
Other than some striking images of Nanao's monkey mask
the style doesn't give the supernatural elements much panache
Second, just like the art, the character writing is also a bit generic. Nanao is a typical passive Cinderella, waiting to be rescued and just happy to be needed. (Dear authors: please read older Cinderella variants where she's an active, clever heroine who facilitates her own rescue.) With the exception of Nanao's dad, her relatives are all cartoonishly wicked. Yako fares a bit better thanks to a touch of moe bashfulness
and Nanao and Yako bonding over their curses creates a potentially strong romantic throughline
there's not much to help distinguish these characters from other
but still worth noting for prospective readers: this world's magic system is founded on gendered stereotypes that combine yin/yang philosophy with “separate sphere” beliefs
so they work outside the home; women possess dark spiritual power
really hammering home how this society sees her as more Instant Pot than person
Maybe the series will challenge that worldview in future volumes
I'm probably being too hard on The Ayakashi Hunter's Tainted Bride
but the premise sounded like a home run for me and it barely got on base
It's a lot of familiar archetypes and story beats without a lot of consideration for how those elements are used or what they mean for the characters and story as a whole
Not even Surprise Vampires could win me over
but unless I hear that Nanao develops some agency and goals beyond “feed hubby,” I won't be back for more
It's almost impossible to read The Ayakashi Hunter's Tainted Bride without thinking about My Happy Marriage
That's largely due to surface similarities: the stories both take place in a fantasy Taisho era and star heroines who were abused by their families
only to be whisked away in marriage to a powerful man
and you have quite frankly a lot of series
in no small part because of the worldwide prevalence of the Cinderella tale type
this series may turn out to be its own thing and strong enough on its own merits to appeal to readers
in no small part because the script is written by Midori Yūma
the author of Kakuriyo – Bed and Breakfast for Spirits
this volume does make it hard to look past the familiar elements
Heroine Nanao was treated horribly by her family because of the actions of her jealous cousin Akemi
who tricked her into becoming tainted by leaving the barrier keeping ayakashi out of the family estate
although the stealing of Nanao's illustrious fiancé Reito speaks more of a different fairy tale
“The White Bride and the Black One,” ATU403a
Akemi's cruelty determines Nanao's life from her fall from grace to her rescue by Yako
and I'm very afraid that we haven't seen the last of her
because the final chapter reveals that Reito is beginning to figure out what his wife has been up to
and the near total lack of any likable characters is a hurdle for this volume
although he does try to be; his naturally caustic demeanor turns him into more of the dark and brooding hero than I think he's meant to be
And he does at least really care for Nanao; his rescue of her is only partially motivated by wanting a bride from her family while the rest comes down to simply wanting to help someone in a terrible position
He and Nanao both need a lot more character development to make the story truly work
which ultimately is why I say this is worth giving a second volume to see where it goes
Right now this feels like a collection of cogs that aren't quite connecting
It has folkloric elements in both fairy tales and ayakashi sitings
a recognizable romance that risks budding into a love triangle if Reito can keep his head out of his ass
whose art is best known from the roughly four hundred Alice in the Country of _____ manga adaptations
I'm tentatively hopeful for this – just because it's telling a familiar story doesn't mean that it's not a story worth reading

In 2024, graduate students from across SGS' M.A. programs conducted fieldwork through Global Perspectives Awards
which are made possible through the generous support of Mr
Read a few highlights about their experiences abroad below.
I had the unique privilege to travel to Astana and Almaty to explore my capstone research question: how had the wielding of political and economic power by Kazakhstan’s government shaped the contours of ownership structure in the country’s post-socialist extractives industries
While the Kazakhstani oil industry had attracted an influx of foreign investment into developing its lucrative Caspian Sea basin reserves in the years after its independence
control of the country’s vast mining industry had consolidated into the hands of a few Kazakh businessmen and state-owned enterprises
Through conversations with academics at KIMEP and the University of Central Asia
I gleaned a greater understanding of the historical and political dynamics that had shaped the industries’ development
including maintaining economic stability in centrally planned ‘monotowns’ and reclaiming removing influence from unsavory Russian investors in the mining industry
Thanks to the Global Perspectives Award and the support of CREEES
my observations from Kazakhstan significantly informed my thesis that Kazakhstan’s heavy-handed privatizations had followed a logic of sovereignty-maximization as Nursultan Nazarbayev sought to consolidate power for himself and his patronage network over his nearly three decades at the nation’s helm
This research was a continuation of my previous work in the Caucasus Mountains in Azerbaijan
where mapping out hiking trails led to encounters with the vast and varied lifestyles and stories present within the mountains
both amongst nomadic societies and old settled villages
The opportunity to revisit some of these historic settlements through the SGS Global Perspectives Award allowed me to explore some of my unanswered questions about the transhumance movements and the often-overlooked histories embedded deep within the mountains and on their highest ridges—stories that cannot be fully comprehended through traditional history textbooks or urban academic centers
which remains as the main gathering and concert hall since Soviet times
Nazrin enjoyed a flavorful dinner in Griz after catching up and studying the newly published Grizli language textbook
Using the funding from the Global Perspectives Award
I visited Gulf of Maine Books in Brunswick
to converse with poet and publisher Gary Lawless about his experiences traveling with and publishing Nanao Sakaki
and it was very gratifying to see him reminisce about his close friend and mentor
I intend to discuss Nanao's non-literary activities in addition to his poetry
I was drawn to Nanao because of my interest in ecocriticism and ecopoetry
but also because of the mystique surrounding this vagabond poet getting by with the generosity of his friends
Gary’s intimate experiences with Nanao elucidated some of the context of his poetry
gave me insight into Nanao’s psyche and philosophy
I have multiple hours of interview audio covering a vast range of Nanao-related topics that I will sift through
which will be an indispensable resource for my prospective thesis
Gary also told me about an archive of Nanao’s works and related material at UC Davis that he has been compiling
but equally impressive was hearing about some of his experiences with American poet and essayist Gary Snyder
Gary Lawless “apprenticed” under Snyder in 1973
Gary discussed the political philosophy of bioregionalism and watershed consciousness—a hot topic of discussion during his time at Snyder’s—to which many of Nanao’s poems correspond
The research I was able to accomplish in Brunswick has exceeded my expectations
and I look forward to synthesizing some of the information I gathered in Maine in the coming year as I begin writing my thesis
Inside the Gulf of Maine bookstore in Brunswick
Facade of the Gulf of Maine bookstore in Brunswick
My research activities included visiting museums and educational centers in El Salvador and examining the ways in which collective memory of Salvadoran history is publicly preserved
Throughout my life and academic experience
I have been exposed to two very different sides of El Salvador: that which is recognized in culture and daily life
and that which is generally the center of academic studies
I decided to pursue this research in an effort to reconcile the disconnect between the understanding of daily life in El Salvador against the largely unspoken traumatic and violent history of the country that is still very fresh in the lives of many
Visiting museums and gaining a deeper understanding of Salvadoran history
I was also exposed to the deep tensions between state and non-state actors when it comes to truth telling and knowledge production
I had the great fortune of my trip to El Mueso de la Palabra y Imagen
coinciding with a workshop the museum held on educating mental health professionals on the history of Salvadoran civil war and consequences on ex-combatants
Speaking with the individuals who participated in the workshop and seeing their own eagerness to learn about and discuss their country's history in a safe space of reflection was an incredibly profound intersection of the desire and struggle to cultivate and preserve a collective memory that the state may otherwise erase
Without the opportunity to have been on the ground and build connections … I would not have been able to see for myself that the desire to reconcile the disconnect between daily life in El Salvador against its violent history is not only my own goal but a broader goal for many Salvadorans who understand the importance of recognizing and preserving the truth
and the role this plays in the present day

The moment when molten glass releases a beautiful glow
Blown glass is a craft that captures that moment
Kota Arinaga encapsulates the long hours spent in the textile process in blown glass
which could be called “the beauty of the moment”
He has a studio on Notojima Island in Nanao Bay
and we will touch on his thoughts as he expresses his own worldview based on the Venetian glass technique
bubbly pattern looks as if it might start moving at any moment
The play of light and shadow is breathtaking
It seems as if life has taken up residence in glass
which is normally considered to be an inorganic material
you can see the fine fibers in each bubble
It looks more like a coarse-textured knitted fabric than a bubble
a traditional Italian glass craft known as Venetian glass
glass artist Kota Arinaga created “netz” using his own unique techniques
When you hear the phrase “textile-inspired”
Textiles are made by spinning thread and weaving it together over time
which must be shaped before it cools and hardens
The processes of glass and textiles seem to be completely opposite
“I wanted to capture the time axis of the textile process
in the ‘instant’ of blown glass.” This series of works is also created through a precise and laborious process of stretching glass like twisting thread
When the time axis of glass and textiles overlap
Venetian glass is characterized by its sophisticated
he aims to “reconstruct this technique with a Japanese sense of beauty and aesthetics”
The Japanese aesthetic sense is unique in that it finds natural beauty in imperfection
Arinaga uses highly advanced techniques that are precisely calculated to express this “beauty of irregularity”
is a place where you can feel the changing of the four seasons
He says that he makes vessels over and over again
and that he creates his own form by letting the movement become ingrained in his body
one-of-a-kind works that require delicate techniques and the everyday vessels are on the same line of craftsmanship
“Techniques and skills are tools for expression
That’s why you have to keep looking after them and polishing them
and you have to keep using them or they won’t improve.” He keeps his hands busy making everyday vessels
polishing up his skills and bringing out his own style
Arinaga’s style of production is artisan-like and stoic
Arinaga thinks about and tries out various things as he works
he has a set of sake cups with different shapes
The wide-mouthed flat cups have a shape that makes the rim and tongue of the cup almost parallel
so that the liquid stops at the tip of the tongue
making it easy to taste the sweetness and bitterness
The small-mouthed guinomi cups are said to make it possible to enjoy a clean taste
the narrow-mouthed kouhai cups are designed so that the liquid flows easily into the mouth
This allows the sake to spread out horizontally
The narrow opening also means that the aftertaste can be enjoyed for longer
The person who gave me the idea was the owner of a local izakaya
He told me about it when he found out I was working with glass
‘I never realized that the shape of a sake cup could make such a difference to the taste of the sake
“I didn’t taste the sake at all at the time
He says that when he was making the vessels
and he tried to make sake vessels that would allow him to experience that
He hopes that the vessels he makes will be easy to use and enrich people’s lives
The vessels he creates with this wish in mind add color and small discoveries to the lives of the people who use them
The Noto Peninsula earthquake that struck on January 1st 2024 also caused damage to the pottery workshop on Notojima Island
Many of the solo exhibitions planned for that year had to be cancelled
but he says that he felt impatient as the extraordinary situation continued day after day
The damage to the area was so great that he also felt unsure about whether it was okay for him to start working again
he received a message from a gallery owner he knew well
I’ll make sure to sell them.’ Hearing this
‘It’s okay to start making things again.’
All the broken pieces were melted together and remade into a new piece
The colors of the fragments were different
but the color that was born from mixing them together was a soft blue
It was a color that reminded one of the sea of Noto
and so it was named “0101 (zero-one-zero-one) blue”
he struggled to get back into the rhythm of his creative activities
but when he crossed over that time on January 1st the following year
“I thought to myself that it was only natural that my pace and style of work would change
given the terrible things that had happened.” When he accepted the change
he says he suddenly felt a weight lift from his shoulders
Arinaga is also involved in something else: expanding the scope of the glass industry
It is a high hurdle to become an independent glass artist
the crucible used to melt the glass has to be replaced
You can’t be away for long periods of time either
to maintain the kiln with the fire still burning
“If only there was a kiln that was more compact
and he took his idea to the kiln manufacturer
who developed a kiln that could be turned off when not in use
If the entire glass industry comes to a standstill
If there were kilns that were easy to use when starting out as an artist
it might be possible to increase the number of potters
the introduction of “Arinaga-style” kilns is spreading
Every day he faces the glass in the “Arinaga-style” kiln that he helped to develop
His desire to expand the scope of his work grows stronger
“I want people to know that this kiln can create such expressions”
Arinaga has encapsulated in his glass also includes time that leads to the future

engineer Jonathan Knight spent five years perfecting his fusion of audio gear and Wajima lacquerware here
He founded his artisanal audio device business Hachidori Inc
Knight relocated to Nanao with the dream of creating an amp that would appeal to the luxury consumers and hardcore audiophiles overseas
The completed preamplifier boosts the electric signals of classic LP vinyl records and open-reel tapes
creating a soft and rich listening experience
Knight particularly devoted his energy to incorporating vacuum tubes into his analog equipment despite amplifiers using such components rarely being found in today’s market
he formed a regional coalition with the Chubei Nakashima Lacquerware Store in Wajima and Age Design Co
With a lacquerware supplier and design firm
Their first product was finished in November last year
Knight explained that the simplified appearance of the preamplifier was inspired by “the philosophy of Zen Buddhism.”
“I pursued a way to reproduce Japanesque factors well,” said Knight
He wanted the preamp to embody the Zen aesthetic by stripping away all unnecessary features to evoke a sense of serenity
the preamplifier is embedded in a case built of thick veneer plywood panels painstakingly treated with lacquer
is the company’s logo and was painted with colored powder using a traditional “makie” technique
The company’s namesake originates with the avian species known as “hachidori” in Japanese
Knight’s connection and interest in Japan began at an early age
and Knight also noticed many audio devices around him were from Japan
With a cathode-ray tube TV set and a transistor radio among them
Knight was naturally attracted to high-performance analog electronics
He went on to specialize in electrical engineering at college and graduate school
with a particular focus in analog circuit design
Knight arrived in Japan for the first time in 1990
He found a corporate job translating Japan’s specialized magazines into English and later worked as an engineer for a semiconductor manufacturer
Knight returned to the United States in 2015
he quickly saw there was “strong discrimination against gender and race” at his new workplace
That was enough to convince him to put down roots in Japan since he was already familiar with the Asian nation
Nanao was not a random choice—the municipality sits along the sea like Florida does
Another reason for Knight’s determination to live there lay in Nanao being close to where Wajima lacquerware was produced
He had been enchanted with the traditional craftsmanship since his 20s
Knight purchased a 150-year-old home with a floor space of a staggering 350 square meters
He set up a studio and an audio room within
His residence was partially damaged in the magnitude-7.6 earthquake that wreaked havoc across the Noto Peninsula on New Year’s Day
The Chubei Nakashima Lacquerware Store has also resumed operations
and Knight is currently planning to release 10 or so preamps a year from here on out
the sleek creation carries a price tag of 9 million yen ($59,600)
Fukami was highly lauded at an international acoustic device fair in Munich
that propelled Knight into closing sales contracts with dealers from Hong Kong and the United States
Knight intends to further expand his sales network primarily in Europe
“I want to convey the attraction of Wajima lacquerware to the rest of the world while showing off the Noto Peninsula’s recovery from the quake disaster at the same time,” said Knight
For orders and inquiries for the preamplifier, visit Hachidori’s website at (https://www.hachidori-onkyo.com/)

Ishikawa — A temporary shopping mall opened Friday in the central part of Nanao
which suffered major damage in the Noto Peninsula Earthquake
who had been waiting for the reopening of familiar stores
The mall is expected to serve as the first step in bringing back the hustle and bustle of the city
“The Nanao municipal government is ready to support the shopping mall so that the positive effects extend to the entire city,” Nanao Mayor Yoshitaka Chatani said at a ceremony
The 344-square-meter temporary shopping mall is made up of prefabricated buildings
Fans and regular customers visited the coffee shop Friday
A coffee roaster and other equipment were brought from the old location which had been affected by the earthquake
This helped recreate a little of its original atmosphere
“I’m glad I can finally eat my favorite pancake again,” said a 36-year-old company employee in the city
At a hair salon that resumed business in the shopping mall
its owner set her 90-year-old mother’s hair
The hair salon had been in business for more than 40 years
Since the owner was not able to find a new place
she had received customers in the building with visible damage to the walls
“I’m really happy that I can work here with a sense of security
I will work hard without rushing too much,” she said
According to the Ishikawa prefectural government
other temporary shopping malls will be constructed in five locations across Wajima
which started its genetic and breeding improvement business for egg-producing chickens in Takaoka City in Toyama Prefecture in 1912
celebrated its 100th year in business in 2012 thanks to its many loyal customers

Japan’s top business lobby has proposed a policy plan to boost the country's gross domestic product to ¥1 quadrillion ($6.6 trillion)
urging the government to raise taxes on the rich to achieve a “virtuous cycle of growth and distribution.”
The Japan Business Federation, or Keidanren, on Monday suggested a series of policy proposals called “Future Design 2040,” aimed at tackling Japan’s declining birth rate and aging population and lack of energy resources.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
“The ‘Future Design 2040’ demonstrates what our country’s ideal society looks like in 2040
around the time (Japan’s) elderly population is expected to peak
and presents policies to realize it,” Masakazu Tokura
In the month since a magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit the Hokuriku region of Japan
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has responded to help with the recovery — including donations of food
The Noto Peninsula earthquake struck the Hokuriku region in western part of the country on Jan. 1, killing more than 230 people and damaging tens of thousands of homes in Ishikawa Prefecture, reported the Church’s Japan Newsroom
Supplies such as drinking water began to arrive at the Nanao Branch of the Kanazawa Japan Stake in the area by the next day
first counselor in the branch presidency and the Relief Society president were directly affected by the earthquake and continued to serve the other members of the branch — delivering drinking water and food to members’ homes
Members of the branch and stake and full-time missionaries in the Japan Nagoya Mission began serving their communities right away: cleaning
Service missionaries and the Church’s area Welfare and Self-Reliance Services office have also been communicating with local agencies to determine how to help meet their needs
The volunteers have dealt with snow and poor road conditions while making sure to make room for emergency vehicle operations and other logistics in the disaster area
stake and area leaders also provided spiritual relief and support
and stake leaders visited Nanao for a special sacrament meeting on Jan
“I had planned to hold a sacrament meeting if even one person could come
but almost all members of the Nanao Branch
They held a testimony meeting after the sacrament
and he said his heart was filled with the faith of everyone in the branch
Elder J. Kimo Esplin, General Authority Seventy and second counselor in the Asia North Area presidency, visited the site Jan. 13-14
evaluating how the Church could further assist in the recovery and attending sacrament meeting at the Nanao Branch
where he offered words of comfort to those who were temporarily evacuated
Aid from the Church included monetary donations to Nanao City Hall and to the Second Harvest Japan food bank. Then, on Jan. 26, the Church gave a monetary donation to the Japanese Red Cross Society
second counselor in the Kanazawa Stake presidency
and others visited the Japanese Red Cross Ishikawa Prefecture Branch in Kanazawa City to officially deliver the donation
The Red Cross officials explained that nearly 300 doctors and nurses from all over Japan have been providing medical care in the affected region
while living on their own in tents and other facilities where there is no accommodation
President Nishimura and the officials spoke about the more-than-100-year relationship between the Church and the International Red Cross and reaffirmed future humanitarian assistance and continued joint efforts
but should refrain from directly sending relief supplies
National Report
Three weeks after a powerful earthquake severely damaged the JR Nanao Line in Ishikawa Prefecture
“Reconnecting the rail is a step toward recovery for Ishikawa Prefecture,” the head of West Japan Railway Co
(JR West)’s Nanao railway department told reporters that day
He asked for a little more patience as the company works toward a full reopening from the devastating Jan
A section spanning 24.7 kilometers between Hakui and Nanao stations reopened on Jan
The reopening allowed passengers to travel the 65.9-km section between the prefectural capital of Kanazawa and the hard-hit city of Nanao
Commuters and students heavily rely on the section
with many expressing relief at the resumption
like not being able to use the bath at home
I’m glad things are slowly returning to normal,” said an administrative staff member at a vocational school in Nanao
there was no other transportation available
the first train from Nanao Station departed for Kanazawa Station with one passenger
A senior at a high school in Kanazawa said
“My family used to drive me halfway to school
so I’m relieved (the Nanao Line) has resumed.”
“The university entrance exam is coming up
some areas of the platforms were roped off due to cracks
Severed water supplies also meant the toilets were out of service
JR West set up six temporary toilets near the station’s entrance
The 5.1-km stretch of the Nanao Line between Nanao and Wakura Onsen stations is still disrupted
with JR West aiming to resume service on it by mid-February
which operates the 11.2-km section between Wakura Onsen and Noto-Nakajima stations
is planning to restart services by the same time
the company has no clear timeline for the resumption of the 16.8-km section extending to Anamizu Station due to the extent of the damage there

the Noto Peninsula had been enjoying a post-pandemic recovery in tourism before a magnitude-7.6 quake on New Year's Day drastically changed its trajectory
one of the hardest hit cities in Ishikawa Prefecture
was once a popular base for exploring the peninsula
with its rich artisan culture of lacquerware
morning market and rice fields drawing visitors from around the world
Now the streets around the city's famous morning market
gutted by a major blaze that broke out following the quake
are lined with collapsed buildings and charred debris
with roads leading into its most famous sites severely damaged
among the more than 200 people who died in the disaster
where an earthquake registered 6 on the country's seismic intensity scale of 7
numerous tile-roofed townhouses on the centuries-old Ipponsugi-dori shopping street are in various states of ruination
Even the surface of the landmark Sentai Bridge is lifted and cracked in parts
While the damage in the city's famous Wakura Onsen hot spring resort town is not as severe as in Wajima and Suzu
executive and administrative director of Nanao Nakanoto DMO
an organization promoting tourism in the area
"When you look at the buildings from the outside
We need to get specialized architects and inspectors in to assess the damage," Endo said
"Now is supposed to be the time for those who borrowed money during the coronavirus pandemic to pay it back
they just don't have that capacity," he added
With running water still not restored to large parts of the peninsula
many are simply taking the challenges they face day by day
with any light yet to appear at the end of the tunnel
and there are quite a few people who may have lost their jobs
We haven't been able to grasp the current situation," said Hajime Koyama
director of the inbound tourism team at Noto DMC
which specializes in tailored Noto Peninsula tours
helped plan trips for over 500 foreign visitors in 2023
with many wealthy travelers from countries like France
Canada and the United States utilizing their services
has become a popular tourist stop on the new "Golden Route" that passes along the Sea of Japan coast on the way from Tokyo to Kyoto
the Noto Peninsula saw around 50,000 international visitors before the pandemic in 2019
with figures for last year likely to have also reached the same level
But with the earthquake and ensuing chaos keeping tourists away
Koyama said his company is currently focusing on helping the area make a quick recovery while remaining prepared to once again receive visitors
there have been hardly any cancellations (by inbound tourists) for trips to Kanazawa
Maintaining this stability is crucial because it contributes to building relationships that ensure a swift return when Noto bounces back," he said
With daily news reports detailing the devastation causing the number of domestic travelers to Kanazawa to plummet despite the city being relatively unscathed
the largest of the city's historical geisha districts
Taiwanese tour groups and other foreign travelers continue to crowd the streets
who was visiting Japan for the first time with her boyfriend Roe Hu
said they had been planning their trip since June last year and did not feel deterred as "Taiwan also has a lot of earthquakes
so it is not something out of the ordinary for us."
an American on a group tour with her husband
saying they had been planning their trip for around a year
the 71-year-old said her nostalgic connection with Japan meant "nothing stops me."
"I wasn't worried because I figured there would be some aftershocks
but I wasn't leaving until (weeks after the quake)
many on the peninsula are pinning their hopes on Kanazawa to give tourism another much-needed kick-start
in the hopes that money spent will flow into Noto as well
who also called on the central government to present clear reconstruction support measures as soon as possible to give everyone a sense of direction
Despite the future of the largely destroyed Wajima morning market remaining uncertain
who heads an association supporting the market
said the attraction will likely become "a symbol of recovery."
even if we don't know how many years it will take," he said

cruel summer finally over and a refreshing chill in the air
my thoughts are turning towards the glories of Taiwan’s hot springs
not so much to the developed bath houses and resorts of Yangmingshan
(although those are very nice in their own way)
It’s still a couple of months too early to safely consider visiting most of the finest hot springs — Hayouxi (哈尤溪溫泉)
Huisun (惠蓀溫泉) and Lulu (轆轆溫泉) — because it’s still technically rainy season in the southern half of Taiwan
and rivers will either be flowing too high to negotiate
or be subject to sudden and dangerous flash floods as thunderstorms hit
a great time to visit the cluster of springs in the northeastern county of Yilan
In November the summertime risk of heavy afternoon showers has gone
while the northeast monsoon fronts (which make Yilan wet and miserable for much of the winter) have yet to strengthen
While several famous ones at Jiaosi (礁溪) and Renze (仁澤) near Taipingshan
have long been tapped to provide water for commercial resorts
A couple of easy-to-reach springs lie just a stone’s throw from each other on Highway 7
Fanfan (梵梵溫泉) and Paiguxi (排骨溪溫泉) hot springs are both just a short stroll from the road
especially with four-wheel drive aficionados
who park their motorized monstrosities on the riverbed right beside the spring
is only big enough for a couple of bathers at any one time
A bigger and more important group lies around the town of Nanao (南澳)
one of the main settlements along the magnificent Suhua Highway (Highway No
A remote trio lie deep in the mountains on tributaries of Hoping Creek
but requires a strenuous three-day camping trip
Easier to reach are the four hot spring sources along Nanao Creek
Flowing out of the mountains to the northwest
the creek passes right through the town before reaching the ocean just north of a beautiful stretch of cliff-bound coastline known as Mystery Coast (神秘海岸)
The first two spring sources are easily accessible
thanks to a road that follows the first 6km or 7km of the river gorge
Bihou (碧候) and Area Four (四區) hot springs lie beside the road and have both been developed
with water piped into unsightly artificial pools
Wild hot spring lovers should motor straight past these without a second glance
park near Area Four Hot Spring and follow the track further in the direction of the blissfully untouched Laka Hot Spring (拉卡溫泉)
Walk ahead along the track through the woods parallel to the broad riverbed
Clamber down to the riverbed and start walking upstream towards the wide gorge opening up ahead
Presently the gorge narrows and the going becomes rougher — the only way is to clamber up
over and occasionally under huge boulders (some nearly as big as a house) washed down by past typhoons
In a few places the sides of the gorge squeeze the river between low cliffs of grey marble
and these stretches are only passable when the river is fairly low
About 90 minutes (or 3km) from the end of the road
the source will be obvious in rocks on the right bank of the river
The powerful source of hot spring water seeps out of a series of cracks in a low sill of rock about 20m in length
the water at the base of the rock will be the temperature of a hot bath
a small stream of scalding hot water (too hot to even stick your toe in) runs through the gravel and into the river
leaving a strip of brightly colored minerals as it flows
Several kilometers upstream from Laka lies Yading Hot Spring (芽丁溫泉)
but it’s normally approached from a completely different direction via a long mountain road beginning near Dongshan (冬山)
If time and weather conditions allow though
do walk upstream from Laka Hot Spring a little further (20 minutes) and your reward
on a side stream to the right after a sharp left-hand bend
is a beautiful small waterfall: a double plunge leaping into a deep pool of pure

The plant hormone auxin is a key morphogenetic regulator acting from embryogenesis onwards
Transcriptional events in response to auxin are mediated by the auxin response factor (ARF) transcription factors and the Aux/IAA (IAA) transcriptional repressors
IAA repressors associate with ARF proteins and recruit corepressors that prevent auxin-induced gene expression
IAAs are degraded and ARFs become free to regulate auxin-responsive genes
The interaction between ARFs and IAAs is thus central to auxin signalling and occurs through the highly conserved domain III/IV present in both types of proteins
we report the crystal structure of ARF5 domain III/IV and reveal the molecular determinants of ARF–IAA interactions
We further provide evidence that ARFs have the potential to oligomerize
a property that could be important for gene regulation in response to auxin
We report here the crystal structure of ARF5 domain III/IV and identify the molecular determinants controlling interactions between ARFs and IAAs
We further demonstrate that ARFs and IAAs can oligomerize
a property that could be crucial for gene regulation in response to auxin
Blue and red asterisks indicate conserved residues of the positive and negative face
Blue and red triangles show conserved residues of the positive and negative face found only in the ARF family
(a) SEC analysis showing that the wild-type ARF5 is eluted as a large oligomer and that mutation on the positive face (ARF5m1)
the negative face (ARF5m2) or both faces (ARF5m3) leads to a monomer with a small proportion of dimer
(b) Calibration curve used to determine the apparent molecular weight of proteins shown in a
Isolated domains III/IV were used and fused to a 6his-tag
III/IVARF proteins and calibration standards were loaded in the same buffer (see Methods)
IAA12 (green) or both proteins mixed (red)
the ARF5m3 double mutant is unable to interact with IAA12 (right)
(b) SEC analysis of ARF5 (left) and IAA12 proteins (right)
Oligomerization of ARF5 and IAA12 is impaired by mutation of the positive face (ARF5m1
(c) Calibration curve used to estimate apparent molecular weight of proteins presented in a and b
IAA12m2 and IAA12m3 are eluted as monomers
Isolated domains III/IV were used for ARF and IAA proteins
IAA and calibration standards) were loaded in the solubilization buffer (see Methods)
Isolated domains III/IV were used for ARF5 and IAA12 proteins
(c) Y2H experiments showing that wild-type ARF5 can interact via both faces of IAA12
P-values from one-sided Mann–Whitney U-test (n=4 for all experiments) by comparison with the results obtained with the two empty vectors (−/−) are indicated
Isolated domains III/IV were used for ARF5 and full-length proteins for IAA12
(a,b) Signalling activity of wild-type and mutant ARF7
IAA17 and IAA19 in Arabidopsis thaliana protoplasts expressing the auxin-inducible DR5::GUS reporter
(a) Comparison of the capacity of the wild-type ARF7 (ARF7wt) and of mutant forms affected on the positive face (K1042A-R1051A: ARF7m1)
on the negative face (D1092A-D1096A-D1102A-D1103A: ARF7m2) or on both (K1042A-D1092A-D1096A-D1102A-D1103A: ARF7m3) to induce auxin-signalling activity in absence (IAA−) or presence (IAA+) of auxin
ARF7 wild-type and mutant forms all significantly increase auxin-induced transcription
only ARF7m3 can increase the transcription of DR5::GUS in the absence of auxin
(b) Comparison of the capacity of the wild-type IAA17 and IAA19 (IAA17/19wt) and mutant forms affected on the positive face (K114A: IAA17m1; K100A: IAA19m1)
on the negative face (D183A-D187A: IAA17m2; D154A-D158A: IAA19m2) or on both (K114A-D183A-D187A: IAA17m3; K100A-D154A-D158A: IAA19m3) to repress auxin-signalling activity in absence (IAA−) or presence (IAA+) of auxin
Expression of IAA17 or IAA19 reduces the induction of DR5::GUS in response to auxin
indicating repression of auxin signalling by the IAA proteins
The repressive capacities are slightly reduced by mutations affecting a single IAA face (m1 and m2) and more importantly affected by mutations affecting both faces (m3) for both IAA17 and IAA19
P-values from one-sided Mann–Whitney U-test (n=3 for all experiments)
Cartoon representing the putative role of domain III/IV from ARF and IAA proteins in auxin signalling
We speculate that IAA might perturb ARF DNA binding by decreasing its oligomerization
Kav=(ve−v0)/(vc−v0); ve=elution volume of the protein
ARF5 elutes as an oligomer with an apparent molecular weight (188 kDa) similar to 6his-ARF5 showing that the presence of the 6his-tag does not alter the oligomerization
standard proteins) in a final volume of 100 μl were injected on the column
Initial crystallization conditions were identified using the High Throughput Crystallization platform at EMBL Grenoble (embl.fr/htxlab)
Crystals were grown by the hanging-drop vapour diffusion method
Purified protein was diluted to 1.25 mg ml−1 in Tris-HCl 5 mM pH 8.0 containing 0.5 mM of reduced and oxidized glutathione and combined with crystallization solution (12% dioxane) in a 3:1 ratio
swept through cryoprotection solution (Tris-HCl 5 mM pH 8.0
0.5 mM GSH/GSSG and 25% glycerol) and then plunge-frozen in liquid nitrogen
For the Y2H analysis, yeast strains (AH109 and Y187) were transformed by the LiAc method3
The Y2H analysis was performed after mating of yeast from the two strains
Interactions were assessed using an HIS3 test
where HIS3 activity resulting from protein–protein interactions is detected by the restoration of growth in the absence of histidine
OD600nm were measured during the exponential growth phase in a base medium (SD-Leu/Trp) with or without histidine
the 35S:CAT gene (chloramphenicol acetyltransferase
mock) was used in place of the ARF or IAA effector genes as control for the amount of effector plasmid DNA (10 μg) introduced into protoplasts
Statistical significance of the results was tested using the non-parametric Mann–Whitney U-test performed with R (www.r-project.org)

Japan (CNN) — Minae Akiyama had traveled from southern Japan to Ishikawa prefecture to celebrate New Year’s with her family
“Thinking about it now still makes me tremble. My heart was pounding, my mind went blank, we just scrambled,” she told CNN from a shelter in the city of Nanao, where she and her family are now staying in the aftermath of the deadly 7.5 magnitude quake that struck on Monday
Akiyama described sheltering under a table during the quake and praying for survival
before grabbing essentials and running outside
Photos from her mother’s house afterward show closets and cabinets tipped over
and food and kitchen tools scattered on the floor
The family was unharmed – but two days later
the quake still feels fresh as they wait for relief at the shelter
enduring frequent aftershocks coursing through the ground
rubble can be seen surrounding some of the building’s cement pillars
I think of the main quake and my body trembles.”
according to a spokesperson for Ishikawa Prefecture
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi on Wednesday said 70 people had been rescued and officials were rushing to meet a request to deploy rescue dogs
Photos across the region showed entire multi-story buildings had fallen on their side
burned structures and rubble where houses once stood
Infrastructure damage remains a major challenge
Roads in and around the peninsula are blocked
though some routes are being cleared for vehicles to deliver food and essentials to the impacted areas
the quake brought back memories of the 2011 Tōhoku 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami
which triggered a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima power plant
with the long-term impact still felt to this day
While the extent of the damage from Monday’s quake is still being assessed
the death toll and levels of destruction appear to be far from that wrought by the 2011 disaster in a country long used to earthquakes and where building codes
was a middle school student in Tokyo when the 2011 earthquake hit
but the epicenter was hundreds of kilometers from the capital
This time it was much closer for Takahashi
“I have experienced massive earthquakes before
the experience of Monday’s quake brought Tōhoku to mind again
it was a similar earthquake where it started from light shaking that gradually got more intense.”
He had been at home taking a bath on Monday when the tremors began
went outside and just ran to my car,” he said
describing buildings and telephone poles swaying dramatically
staying at a parking lot owned by a friend – which feels like the safest place to be
given frequent aftershocks and the military helicopters and vehicles passing by
Some of his friends had worse luck and lost their homes entirely
Many such survivors are now at shelters like the one Akiyama and her family are staying in – but relief is limited
there’s little else available; there was no heating when CNN visited on Tuesday evening
so people slept on mats on the floor with thick blankets
hats and gloves to stay warm in the 4 degrees Celsius (40 degrees Fahrenheit) nighttime temperatures
meaning people had to stand in line outside to receive water from the Japan Self-Defense Forces – which is now working with local governments
police and fire departments to coordinate search and rescue operations
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Wednesday
added on Wednesday that more than 36,000 households are still without power
helicopters are being used to gather information
