Japan — A trial by the Marine Corps of an experimental landing ship ended recently with the vessel failing to offload equipment at this coastal training area southwest of Tokyo and heading back to port
a converted offshore supply vessel with over 6,000 square feet of deck
a 1,000-foot-wide swathe of coast designated for U.S
military training on Suruga Bay in Shizuoka prefecture
The vessel appeared to deploy stabilizing pylons while Marines ashore waited for the ship to drop a large ramp and offload tactical vehicles
tents and gear for an exercise at the nearby Combined Arms Training Center Camp Fuji
The bay was relatively calm as the Resolution eventually headed out to sea and north to Yokohama to offload its cargo
were in the field Tuesday and had yet to respond to queries about the landing attempt
The Marines had loaded their vehicles and gear at Naha Military Port
Jason Berg told Stars and Stripes at Numazu
The Marines were bound for Camp Fuji for two weeks of full-spectrum combat logistics training
“This is the first time we have moved gear like this,” he said of the stern landing effort
which involved the vessel backing up to the beach in the attempt to offload cargo
landing craft launched from the dock landing ship USS Ashland and dropped off Marines and vehicles at Numazu Beach during training
The training area there is set aside for ship-to-shore drills and serves as a helicopter landing zone
The Resolution went through a series of trials last year in the Del Mar Boat Basin at Camp Pendleton
as part of Navy efforts to design a new type of landing ship
The vessel is a prototype for a future medium landing ship
a Marine Corps Systems Command spokeswoman told reporters at the time

The quietude at Numazu Club is its biggest selling point
Even when the sliding doors of a guest room at the villa are wide open

ADRIAN — A downtown business is likely looking for a new home
The city terminated its lease with Numazu Delights
the Japanese-style cafe at the Adrian District Library
The city owns the library building and leases the space to the library and cafe
according to city administrator Greg Elliott
The cafe is owned by Ted Covey and Saori Shimizu
Covey said the back rent is from the months Numazu had the space but was not open
The owner told The Daily Telegram they couldn't move in when they were ready due to some fixes the city needed to make
When Covey approached then-city administrator Shane Horn
he said he was told to start paying rent when Numazu opened
Elliott said they are looking into the situation
The cafe is still operating while additional details are worked out
The Adrian City Commission decided following a premeeting discussion Monday to let the library determine the future of the cafe space at the front of the library
This came after discussion with library director Jen Wrzesinski
who said she has liability concerns with the cafe space
The gate serves as the back wall to the cafe
It's not an issue when both the library and shop are open
but the director worries when only Numazu is open
"I'm concerned about the security issues there when they have one employee and there is no library staff at the time," Wrzesinski said
She said other than a couple of minor instances — people wandering into the library to use the restroom — this has not been a problem
a possible space for a friends of the library group to sell books or a spot for vendors
"We are definitely interested in the space," Wrzesinski told the commission
nothing that is completely flushed out at this time."
Commissioners Lad Strayer and Brad Watson were proponents of letting the library decide how the space will be utilized
Strayer said the current cafe does not match the original intent of the space
The most recent iteration of a cafe was more of coffee shop-like
"It seems like we've gone way off the rails," he said
the library should have control of that space
and let them make the decisions on how they want to use it."
"It doesn't feel like it's the appropriate spot (for Numazu)," Watson added
Watson said Numazu is not a complimentary business to the library's function
Watson was in favor of letting them decide how they use the space
The library has a five-member board that is appointed by the city commission
Numazu Delights opened in July 2017. The idea for a Japanese cafe was welcomed by the commission in 2016
when the city struck a lease agreement with the owners of Numazu
The news came as a surprise to Covey on Tuesday
He was not aware the discussion was taking place
He said just two weeks prior their attorney had been contacted by the city about a new lease agreement
"That's what we were waiting for," he said
Covey said it's been a frustrating three-and-a-half years since they opened
Numazu had a month-to-month lease for the past two-plus years
Covey said they originally signed a one-year lease
but it expired when the city was going through a period of turnover in the city administrator office
Covey said they approached the city more than once for a multiyear lease
He believes the lease was not a priority issue at the time
Wrzesinski backed Covey and said that was likely
Numazu has flourished despite the challenges
"We've been really appreciative of our people," he said
It's what makes Monday's decision so frustrating
"We thought the city would be a half-decent landlord," he said
The owners have been considering a different space for awhile
Covey said they're eyeing another space in Adrian
"We definitely thought that we were heading in the right direction," he said
"We thought we were a good fit for downtown."
Elliott said the city will allow for the library and Numazu to talk before it acts on the lease termination
Wrzesinski said she will confer with the library board before any decision regarding the cafe space is made

Marines piled out of their landing craft and onto the rocky shore near Mount Fuji to simulate an amphibious landing Wednesday
part of monthlong exercises with their counterparts in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force
The landing exercise was a departure for the Marines
who for decades rarely visited the Numazu Beach Training Area at Combined Arms Training Center Camp Fuji
part of a 34,000-acre military reservation at the foot of its namesake mountain
along with the arms-length relationship the Marines held with their Camp Fuji neighbors
The two are rebuilding their relationship as China asserts a claim of dominance in the Indo-Pacific region
we had really not been using this beach to train for about a 30-year period,” Camp Fuji commander Col
Robert Bodisch told Stars and Stripes on Wednesday
we started using the beach more – that was one of my lines of effort to try and modernize our training environment.”
said modernizing Fuji’s training regiments and building a closer relationship with the Self-Defense Forces are his primary goals
“You might be surprised to find out that – in the 70 years that Camp Fuji has been there – we have rarely
done any bilateral training or exercises with the Japanese
even though we’re surrounded by five other [Japanese] bases,” he said
dubbed Maritime Defense Exercise-Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade
launched March 6 and is scheduled to conclude March 25
Along with the training and support units at Camp Fuji
the exercise players include elements of the III Marine Expeditionary Force and the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade of the Ground Self-Defense Force
members of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit landed on the beach aboard a craft dispatched from the dock landing ship USS Ashland
Seven Joint Light Tactical Vehicles rumbled off the boat and stood watch over the Marines unloading their gear
stood nearby with a contingent of Japanese officers
Kondo told Stars and Stripes that he shares Bodisch’s goal for a stronger relationship between their respective forces
one that will produce innovative practices
“My understanding is that we need to challenge new capabilities in a totally new operating environment; this is something different from what I expected,” Kondo said
“We need to create a new way of amphibious assault.”
A close partnership also ensures strategic deterrence
particularly when demonstrating force-on-force exercises between the two nations
Future Maritime Defense Exercises will include amphibious assaults
sniper training and helocasting – a maneuver in which Marines jump from a helicopter hovering just above the ocean’s surface
The exercise is also taking place simultaneously on Guam between a separate component of the 31st MEU and British Royal commandos
Michael Nakonieczny told Stars and Stripes on Wednesday
He said the scale of the exercise is unique
“This is part of something called Noble Arashi
which is broken into two parts – the part that’s taking place here at Camp Fuji and there’s also a part taking place in Guam,” Nakonieczny said
“Everything that you’re seeing here will be done in one form or fashion – in different
varying scales – not only here on mainland Japan
Nakonieczny said the exercise helps the U.S
and its allies prepare for any threat or crisis in the region
Left unsaid at this level is where that threat may originate
considers China its “pacing challenge” in the Indo-Pacific
any threat to that free and open Indo-Pacific is what we’re prepared to respond to,” Nakonieczny said
A deck-building roguelite played by magic cards
Yohane the Parhelion is an official spin-off of Love Live
Yohane the Parhelion: NUMAZU in the MIRAGE is a deck-building rogue light set in that world
While working as a fortune teller in Numazu
she comes into possession of an old mirror
Worried that her fortune-telling is not accurate
Yohane decides to play “Magic Mirror Fortune-Telling” using the mirror
What she finds in the mirror is the “Ura-Numazu,” which is the exact reverse of the real Numazu
it was a mysterious world where magic could be used with the power of cards
strange things happen to the friends in the real world one after another
she must go through the “Ura-Numazu”
A world of mirrors that changes its appearance every time she enters
what is the future that Yohane will choose
Taira Akitsu has been drawing the Genjitsu no Yohane -Sunshine in the Mirror- illustration series in the Love Live! Days Love Live
Source: Yohane the Parhelion - NUMAZU in the MIRAGE - game's website
The “Toro Hat” can be worn by Yohane
and is not only reflected in her appearance in both battle and story scenes
but enhances her performance with the attached starter card “Ocarina Tones” and starter charm “Shishinoshin Badge.”
Yohane the Parhelion: NUMAZU in the MIRAGE is due out for PlayStation 5, Switch, and PC via Steam on February 22 worldwide

Featuring an enchanting sukiya-style tea house and a superbly designed guesthouse complex
A heavenly hideout surrounded by a grove of over 1,000 pine trees that have survived for centuries
Numazu Club is the ideal retreat for anyone in search of some peace and serenity
it features an enchanting sukiya-style tea house originally built in 1913 and a modern and superbly designed guesthouse complex that faces out onto a contemplative pond
Numazu Club’s villa was erected adjacent to the original building
It was the last major work of the hugely respected late architect Akira Watanabe
He used a special technique involving layers of sand and dirt from Fuji River to create what is a very elegant and natural-looking complex that complements the tranquil surroundings
It is an impressive sight from the outside looking in and the interior doesn’t disappoint either
The two-story building contains eight spacious rooms in varying styles
including a maisonette with a bedroom upstairs and an exquisitely designed suite room with an outdoor bath
There’s also a choice of Western and Japanese-style rooms
I stayed in a deluxe twin room that was both chic and comfortable
a Japanese cypress bath and a small kitchen
The fridge was also stocked with various kinds of alcoholic beverages that I would be making the most of later
it was time to unwind at Numazu Club’s spa
An elegant space featuring an indoor bath and an open-air one
the water here comes from a well within the grounds that shares the same source as the springs of the Kakita River
named one of the three cleanest streams in Japan
taking a dip in the outdoor bath felt both soothing and peaceful
The water is also said to have excellent cleansing properties due to being rich in minerals such as potassium and magnesium
As for Numazu Club’s ganbanyoku (hot stone spa)
that’s covered in slabs made of Bad Gastein stone
which is known to contain more far-infrared rays and negative ions than other minerals and subsequently has many health benefits
It’s particularly good for detoxifying and destressing after a hard week
though I was only in there for a very short time
has two saunas with different temperatures
As well as feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, I was now also hungry. Luckily a multicourse meal awaited. I would be eating at Chatei in Numazu Club’s historic teahouse
along with the resort’s thatched-roof Nagaya gate
registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan
Built more than a century ago by Zenbei Miwa
the second-generation proprietor of Mitsuwa Soap
it has been used by many prominent politicians to host meetings over the years
you can still feel the history of the place as soon as you walk in
The food was washed down with a few glasses of wine
there was also some local craft beer to enjoy
I began the next morning with a gentle stroll around the idyllic and spacious garden before another quick dip in the spa’s outdoor bath
I then finished my stay with an extensive Japanese breakfast back at Chatei
Heading back to my room to gather my stuff to check out
I noticed a little card with a personalized message that I must have missed the day before
the staff at Numazu Club did everything they could to make sure my stay was as comfortable and as memorable as possible
It’s no surprise to hear that many guests return

I’ve never paid much attention to the roguelike/roguelite deckbuilder genre popularized by Slay the Spire
Just a brief moment with Yohane the Parhelion: Numazu in the Mirage
gave me the answer to that unasked question: these games don’t usually have a charming anime aesthetic and cozy vibe like this one does
If you’ve no knowledge of the Love Live! multimedia franchise, Yohane the Parhelion is a fantasy-themed spin-off of one of its series
Yohane the Parhelion reimagines Sunshine’s high school idols as fortune tellers
the titular protagonist enters a mirror version of her world to defeat evil doppelgangers of her friends with magical cards and cure them of a life force-draining affliction
but I do like Yumiko Yamamoto’s character designs for the Yohane anime
so I appreciated seeing the Yohane cast in lively 3D cel-shaded form (well-animated
and much more visually appealing than the game’s backgrounds) as well as 2D card illustrations
chuunibyou-like fortune-teller who’s really into the magic card thing
She strikes a cheeky triumphant pose after a victorious fight
grins like a gremlin half the time she’s on-screen
and sometimes yells the name of the “D-d-d-darkness” Attack card when it’s played.
Numazu in the Mirage’s visual presentation
provided a welcoming atmosphere I never tired of as I fought citruses
Each Challenge presents a randomly generated web of battles
As Yohane makes her way through a Challenge
she gets multiple opportunities to expand her arsenal of Magic Cards
Most story chapters consist of two or three consecutive Challenges
I’d accumulate enough cards and charms that I often received salvation from abilities and perks that I forgot were in my possession
Combat is mainly about adjusting your priorities based on the situation and your hand
manipulating numbers to make your attacks and defensive shields more potent
A battle consists of the player drawing cards
and reacting to the enemies’ actions before they can knock Yohane out and end a run
The game displays your opponents’ next actions
and debuffs so you can respond accordingly
I just wish the tooltips would go further and explain the consequences of status effects before
Magic Cards are broadly categorized as red Attack Cards and blue Spell Cards
and the bevy of sub-abilities that come with most cards makes further classification an exercise I won’t bother with
You might die quickly if you overcommit to Attack cards
but aiming for a battle of attrition generally isn’t wise unless you manage to craft a deck that fully supports that playstyle
and it was wonderful.) Summon Cards are separate from your deck and are used to temporarily call in manifestations of Yohane’s friends
who provide effects that can be literal game-changers
you can pick between the Balance deck or the Power deck
Most of the Balance deck focuses on utilizing cards with more straightforward applications
while the remainder often proved too fiddly for my tastes
which is unlocked roughly halfway through the story
places higher emphasis on using card ability synergies to boost damage and gives the player more access to cards with buff and debuff effects
but I still enjoyed the Balance deck since it had more than enough cards I liked to make up for my disinterest in the fiddly side
While I expected more deck types from the game
I felt that there’s ultimately enough variation among the existing 150+ cards to keep the ad hoc deckbuilding fun and interesting for a while
are usable only when all other cards in your hand are Attack or Spell
or become cheaper to use when a specific condition is met
Rarer abilities let you duplicate other cards or select a card from your deck to add to your hand
The variety felt a bit overwhelming during my first session
While I quickly got used to it thanks to my experience with tabletop wargames and a past dalliance with the board game/deckbuilder hybrid Warhammer Underworlds
I still found that picking a new card to loot or buy always felt like a measured decision
the Balance and Power decks also have a respective attribute mark
I’ve only seen one card per deck that interacts with these
Power’s “An Inviting Light” is quite fun to use — it starts with six damage and adds two damage per attribute card in the deck — but the attribute mechanic ultimately feels wafer-thin compared to the combo-crafting and synergy planning of everything else
The best moments of Numazu in the Mirage came when the charms
and the RNG of the draw allowed me to pound enemies into sparkly dust through turn-extending combos
I relied on cheap yet reliable and easy-to-use cards — there’s a surprisingly high number of these — that I further enhanced through charms and synergy
I also picked up charms and cards that can replenish and/or increase the energy pool or trigger additional card draws
Things got ludicrous during one long boss fight where I duplicated a special card called “Macarons” that reduces the energy cost of another card to zero
This card was added to my hand every seven turns by a charm
so I eventually ended up with even more of it
I was abusing the boss with a deck composed entirely of free and one-energy cards
although my overconfidence left me victorious with just one point of health remaining
you can redeem rewards for completing Requests
which are essentially a mix of story objectives and challenges
which you can spend on permanent health increases
and a handful of otherwise locked cards and charms.
These outfits determine your starting charm and one of the three starting non-basic Attack/Shield cards
the game doesn’t let you know what card and charm an outfit comes with until you’ve handed over the dosh
one of the Steam store screenshots displayed info for the Maid Uniform costume
“Whispers of Darkness,” is my favourite in the game: it places a random Attack card in your hand and reduces its cost to zero
“Whispers of Darkness” itself becomes free when upgraded.
It took me around 20 hours to finish the story mode on Normal
Easy and Easy+ give you a charm that improves stats and draw numbers
A slightly tougher post-story mode can extend the playtime further
is simple and doesn’t require intimate knowledge of the characters and their relationships to follow
though non-Love Live fans will have to refer to the Character Index to learn their basic profiles
Apart from a rare bug — which I encountered twice — that messes with the display alignment of the cards in your hand
and ignoring the multiple defeats I suffered
even on my four-year-old entry-level gaming laptop.
I usually keep a distance from anything roguelike as the permadeath aspect just doesn’t appeal to me
but Numazu in the Mirage was genuinely hard to put down
I’d keep telling myself that I’d take a break after a battle or shop visit
only to submit to the temptation to click on just one more space
but I would still be raring to start another run
I wouldn’t be able to say that if the gameplay was boring
and I assume that the difficulty here is much gentler than a typical roguelike deckbuilder
but the contribution of the atmosphere — created by the cel-shaded anime-style models
the cheery character designs and color palette
and Yohane’s mannerisms — to the game’s charm shouldn’t be understated either
Playing the game was like being embraced by a nice

which released on the PS5 and PS4 last year
Like that game, though, this is a bit of a sleeper, clearly inspired by indie hits like Slay the Spire et al
so you’ll never face the same scenario twice
forcing you to think tactically about how you approach each attempt
Completing battles will unlock cards which you can add to your deck
as well as summons inspired by characters from the source material
these can turn the tides of battle when deployed in the right moments
you’ll battle a variety of different enemies
some with the ability to lock out cards from your deck
requiring you to make strategic decisions about how to approach
design favourable scenarios that buff your energy allocation
you’ll need to consider which cards will complement your current deck
and which path you want to take to the final boss
the gameplay is challenging enough to test your grey matter
without ever becoming exhausting or overwhelming
An easy difficulty option means you can tone down the challenge if you want a more comfortable experience
while the existence of Charms allows you to seriously beef up your capabilities throughout each course
culminating in some satisfying conclusions
delivered through visual novel-style cutscenes
is a little dry and unlikely to engage non-fans of the source material
some of the card descriptions can be a little cumbersome and wordy
leaving their usage down to trial and error
if you’ve been looking for a colourful deck builder with a more anime art style than the decidedly heavy metal Slay the Spire

I’m going to try the demo b/c I’m getting a Baten Kaitos vibe though I’m like 99% certain it’s going to be nothing like that
@rjejr Considering all what you just said
Only thing is it might be too simple for him if he’s already very familiar with Slay the Spire
@get2sammyb Thanks
Simple is good sometimes to take a little break from work
Hold on there, you need to login to post a comment..

A plate of sashimi served in Marukichi Shokudo reveals the oddly shaped heads of two of the region’s deep-sea fish varieties
The Heda district in the city of Numazu in the prefecture lies on the coast about an hour’s drive from the city center
A large volume of the local catch of deep-sea fish is landed in the district
and the bay’s rich bounty can be found served at many restaurants in the area
the owner of seafood restaurant Marukichi Shokudo
showed off some of the fresh fish he had bought that day
including two seasonal varieties — Japanese grenadier
and a type of beardfish called arame ginme
The restaurant gets its seafood directly from local fisherman
The owner served me a plate of sashimi featuring two kinds of deep-sea fish priced at about $17.70
Japanese grenadier is called “gehou” by local residents
The species is found at depths between 984 and 3,280 feet and is characterized by its oddly shaped head and sharp pointed nose
Though the appearance of the fish is slightly strange
the taste of its white flesh was far from peculiar
The contrast of its almost grotesque appearance and the fresh flavor of the sashimi
Arame ginme is a deep-sea fish species that has become popular in recent years
It is another fish that does not look particularly appetizing
but eaten as sashimi it tasted surprisingly sweet
I imagined it would go quite well with sake
which creates the sweet flavor,” Toshiyuki Nakajima said
He studied fisheries science at university
and now also serves as the leader of a local project to revitalize the Heda district community by taking advantage of the deep-sea fish caught in the region
Hearing him share his knowledge about the region’s fish made me appreciate the meal even more
A deep-sea fish species that some consider a symbol of the Heda district is spider crab
of which the largest have a legspan of almost 10 feet
many restaurants serve fresh spider crabs that they keep alive in tanks
a restaurant that offers a wide variety of crab dishes
always stocks about 40 to 50 of the creatures in water kept at 53 degrees
Its menu includes a dish that features a whole spider crab ($88.50-$177)
gratin ($8.85) and kaisen-don seafood rice bowl ($16.80)
their meat tastes extremely fresh,” Noichi Shokudo owner Inakazu Nakajima said
residents draw faces on empty crab shells and use them as masks to drive away evil spirits as part of a local tradition
During my trip I felt the deep connection that exists between the lives of the locals and the delicious deep-sea creatures from Suruga Bay
17 minshuku guest houses and 10 ryokan inns that serve local seafood from the district
Heda toro hanpen fish cake is a regional specialty
Local cuisine features fish such as Japanese barramundi (“mehikari” in Japanese
locally called “torobotchi”) and deep sea smelt (“nigisu” in Japanese
It is a tradition in the district that store and restaurant owners raise “nobori” banner flags at the entrances on days when seasonal fish catches are brought in
An official of the tourist association said: “Local chefs use different ingredients to make the region’s specialty dishes
It is interesting to enjoy the variety of options at each of the establishments.”
Japanese version
the PlayStation 5 and Switch versions will be available physically for 6,380 yen and digitally for 4,950 yen
A “Premium Box” limited edition will also be available for 14,960 yen
as well as the first-print run downloadable content costume “Chick.”
Here is an overview of the game, via its Steam page:

opened its gates in July of 2018 and managed to make a great first impression with the help of an inspired selection of gourmet sweets
the owners set out to create a product that captured the essence of Numazu
and the adjacent Suruga Bay proved to be the perfect inspiration
Famous for hosting the deepest ocean pits around Japan
Suruga Bay was perfectly represented by a whimsical blue dessert named Deep Sea Pudding
Consisting of a layer of no-bake pudding representing the bottom of the ocean
topped off with a deep blue layer of ramune soda flavored jelly
Deep Sea Pudding is not the most complex dessert ever created
but it’s definitely a stunning-looking one
it’s easy to see why people started posting photos of it on social media soon after Numazu Deep Sea Pudding Factory opened
They’ve been doing the rounds online ever since
it was rumored that the pudding specialty shop was selling up to 2,500 jars of Deep Sea Pudding a day

a character area was set up at the locally managed Sannoura information desk facing Uchiura bay
It includes figures of the 9 main characters as well as free maps of landmarks from the show and is independently run by fans
the information desk began keeping a visitor tally
Looking at the notes left behind in the fan corner
there were many people coming from faraway places like Kyoto
The local manager of the information desk was quoted as saying
so many residents are bewildered by this sudden anime boom
I have no doubt that the area will become more popular
and from now on the administration will want to plan for further activities.”

restaurants where sushi plates are delivered to customers on a rotating conveyor belt
One Japanese restaurant takes a radically different approach
delivering dishes not on a solid conveyor belt but on a stream of water
it comes floating in a wooden tub on an artificial "river" that circles around the counter
as well as rice and noodle dishes and other cafe fare
When Donguri first started over forty years ago
conveyor belt sushi restaurants didn't exist
The shop owner trained at a restaurant where they had a trademarked "river counter" system
and when he decided to open a cafe in the Nakamise shopping area of downtown Numazu
he installed one there to distinguish himself from his competitors
It was the Showa Era at the height of the kissaten boom
you'll see all the food samples in the window case
A quick look will give you a sense of the variety of items available on the menu
you'll need to buy a ticket from a ticket machine
The interior is clean and well-maintained for a shop which has been around since the 1970s
Japanese ukiyo-e prints decorate the panels at your table
as the stream of the "river counter" flows gently by
It's very soothing and enjoyable to see dishes float by on traditional wooden oke tubs
Unlike sushi shops or ramen shops where a staff member takes your ticket by hand
at Donguri you clip your ticket to a clipboard
slide it into a holding slot on the wooden tub and send it downstream
it will be sent from the kitchen area and the marker at your table will light up
Each table has a city name such as Numazu 沼津 or Mishima 三島 (near Numazu and the closest shinkansen station)
Here's a short video we took showing you what it looks like when you order a strawberry parfait
so you may want to gently hold it in place with one hand as you remove the contents
one of the attractions of Donguri is the Showa Era mood with fills the shop
you'll find an authentic jukebox which takes coins and plays classic Japanese hits from the last 40 years
along with a bit of The Beatles and Queen mixed in for good measure
You'll also see letters from fans and photos of entertainers, actors and famous people who have visited before, testifying to the shop's enduring popularity. In fact, Donguri was just featured on February 15th in Itadaki High Jump いただきハイジャンプ
a Fuji Television show featuring members of the popular idol group Hey
Daiki Arioka and Yuya Takaki visited Donguri
since Numazu was the setting for the popular anime Love Live
Donguri has also become a favorite among some fans of the series when they visit Numazu on an anime pilgrimage
which the owner has gladly accepted and displayed
(Scroll back up to the photo of the ticket machine and you might notice one)

Shizuoka — The Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium is located at a port facing Suruga Bay
The facility’s most eye-catching feature is an exhibition of samples of coelacanths
This fish species has survived in the deep seas without having changed its appearance for 350 million years
The aquarium is Japan’s only facility where visitors can see real samples that are cryogenically preserved
It also stores lots of data to help unlock the mysteries of coelacanths’ biological features
Coelacanths were believed to have gone extinct 70 million years ago
a live coelacanth was caught in the sea off East London
The first fish caused a sensation as a great discovery of the century
A museum curator sent sketches of the fish to an ichthyologist
a second coelacanth was found in the Comoro Islands to the east of Africa
Japan has sent scientific research teams to the discovery sites since 1981 and brought back samples to Japan
The samples exhibited in the aquarium are two cryogenically preserved coelacanths and three stuffed specimens
Officials of the aquarium said the cryogenically preserved samples are precious in international terms
captured coelacanths were made into stuffed specimens after being anatomized for study
In the case of the Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium
after research on the samples was finished
Aquarium officials asked the person to sell the five samples
so that they would be eye-catching items to exhibit for the opening of the aquarium
as the wealthy person had hoped that all of them would be exhibited in the same place
The morphology of the captured coelacanths does not largely differ from that found in fossils
the fish species has been widely called a living fossil
There are still many mysteries about coelacanths
One is that living coelacanths have been found in limited sea areas off Indonesia and Africa
though those deep-sea environments do not differ to a great extent
Asked “What is the biggest mystery?” Hirotaka Shiozaki
breeding and exhibition manager of the aquarium
Strikes by meteors and climate change have caused many living species to go extinct
Visitors to the aquarium will consider the reasons why lives have been inherited since primeval ages and feel a sense of romanticism about the deep sea
which had lived in zones so deep that light does not reach
the interior of the aquarium is illuminated with special lighting
Admission: ¥1,600 for adults (¥1,500 for 65 or older)
¥800 for elementary to junior high school students

Fictional idol Yō Watanabe can't catch a break
her manhole cover in Numazu is defaced and now one of her biggest fans had a fateful run-in with the local police
The 23-year-old driver of a decked out Yō itasha allegedly hit a woman with the car and fled the scene on October 13
on suspicion of causing an injury with a car due to negligence and engaging in a hit-and run
Police didn't specify whether the suspect admitted to the charges or not
According to police the driver turned right at an intersection at approximately 5 p.m
on October 13 and hit a 79-year-old pedestrian crossing the street
The collision caused the woman to break her right wrist
Police were able to locate the suspect quickly given the unique appearance of the car
Nonetheless, attempts to market tourism on the anime's popularity have met with mixed results. The city crowdfunded nine manhole covers of the AQOURS idols only for visitors to repeatedly vandalize them. The covers will pulled from the streets and two college students and one high school student were arrested in relation to the vandalism
