The Ohara School of Ikebana was founded in 1895 by Unshin Ohara who was inspired by the beauty of Japan’s native wildflowers as well as newly introduced exotic flowers To express these flowers in a natural and dynamic way meaning “arranging flowers in a water basin”—an innovative style that captures the changing scenery of the four seasons using shallow containers This groundbreaking approach not only preserved the principles of Ikebana but also resonated with the evolving aesthetics of modern living spaces embracing both tradition and innovation while fostering a deep appreciation for Ikebana worldwide A retired NASA software engineer turned Ikebana master Jose Salcedo has taught at both Ohara School and Ikenobo School Ikebana for over 25 years along with the Ikebana International New York Chapter Salcedo will demonstrate how to create these arrangements using a mix of traditional and modern materials Register Register This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. She loved birds, and had a special respect and affection for owls. Once, some kids at school told her that she looked like a barn owl, and it became a lifelong endearment. After her death at age 33 from complications of cystic fibrosis, the owl went on to symbolize her quiet wisdom. When the artist Kat David painted a beautiful homage to Caitlin, she included a barn owl. I had always wanted to see an owl, but if one was sitting unmoving in daylight, it had to be injured. I was afraid as I followed her outside. (Courtesy Maryanne O'Hara)It was a beautiful barred owl It sat quietly in a corner of a stone wall even as we inched close enough to understand that its left wing was damaged Inside, we called mass.gov’s wildlife division. A woman explained we could let nature take its course or contact a permitted wildlife rehabilitator. She directed us to a list of names, and I began calling ones nearest to my town, leaving desperate voice messages. She hung up. “We’re going to have to do this,” she said. Her calm gave me courage. I grabbed a towel. I ran up to the attic hoping to find a box large enough to hold an owl. But then––salvation––the third woman texted: I’m 20 minutes away. We went back out to the driveway to wait for this angel volunteer. The owl had not moved. It watched us. It looked tired and kept closing its eyes. Nearly an hour had passed. Those moments were emotional, and became more so when the volunteer, Julie, arrived with a helper. She slowly moved backwards towards the owl, holding a large black cloth. The owl never flinched. Indeed, it turned its head and watched her approach. When she covered him with the cloth, he collapsed. “Oh buddy,” she said. She hugged and rocked him. “I’m so sorry.” She gathered him up, so kind and loving, and propped him against the hood of her car to remove the cloth. She had a strong hold on his feet as she inspected the damaged wing. At this point, the owl’s eyes were wide open, and as they latched on to me and Katie, he spread his one good wing. The magnificence and awe of that wing span as he tried to swoop toward us! They were not going to be able to save him, Julie said, but the vets at Tufts would euthanize and bury him with dignity. She tucked him into the box she had brought: a veterinarian’s cat carrier. The in-progress dolmen the author and her husband are building to honor their daughter (Courtesy Maryanne O'Hara)It turns out that a large owl can easily fit into a small cat’s box We asked ourselves these questions as we drove to the cemetery It was close to dusk when we arrived at the gravesite-in-process: a large Dolmens––think Stonehenge––date back to the Neolithic period They resemble stone doorways and are often steeped in mystery Caitlin’s dolmen consists of six nine-foot stone pillars that will support a flat Nick calls her dolmen a “pass-through.” He says it represents how we pass through this physical life on our way to the spiritual Katie and I picked branches from evergreens and laid a circle of them on the ground beneath the pillars and about how it has always felt fitting that Caitlin left during the winter solstice Other bird deaths occurred that week among Caitlin’s loved ones but these happenings—during the anniversary week at the end of a hard year for so many—reminded us of the truth Caitlin seemed to grasp: that death is a part of life a reminder to embrace this connection with nature and loved ones Follow Cognoscenti on Facebook and Instagram. spoilers from “The Studio” Season 1 There’s no limit of impressive cameos in “The Studio,” Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s love-hate letter to Hollywood there was one who really stunned Rogen: Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese “Scorsese was very impressive and a very funny performer — like legitimately funny — and was really firing on all cylinders,” Rogen told TheWrap Scorsese appears in the first episode of “The Studio” as himself After Matt Remick (Rogen) is thrust into his dream job following the unceremonious ousting of his mentor Patty (Catherine O’Hara) the pressure is on for him to make his first movie a hit That first project has to be a movie adaptation of Kool-Aid an idea that’s a commercial nightmare to the film-loving Matt “The Promotion” follows Matt as he desperately tries to shoehorn the movie he desperately wants to make — Scorsese’s possible last movie — into the movie the marketing department needs him to make the directorial legend kept making Rogen and co-star Ike Barinholtz laugh especially during the episode’s emotional climax “He really wanted to improvise a lot which was very difficult considering how we were shooting things So we just found a way to make it work,” Rogen said “He told me I say ‘f–k’ too much which was a real badge of honor coming from the man who literally has more profanity in the history of film than any other films,” Rogen said It’s exactly this sort of meta exchange that makes “The Studio” feel so refreshing there have been several shows and movies that have satirized Hollywood Caesar!” and “The Player” to “Hacks” and “BoJack Horseman.” But none oscillate between loving reverence and cutting nearly cruel mockery to the same degree as “The Studio.” A great example of this whiplash pace can be seen when it comes to Catherine O’Hara’s Patty the woman whose ousting leads to Matt’s rise and the beginning of this particular Hollywood story But when the two finally clash at her gorgeous house As Patty shifts between yelling at her mentee for betraying her and cursing Continental Studios she repeatedly pauses her rants to negotiate a first-look agreement with Matt “It was the first scene we shot together in the show so we were also feeling out the dynamics of the characters,” Rogen said “But we always liked this idea of I f–ked her over She’s really mad that I f–ked her over we see it as an opportunity that could be mutually beneficial which I think really gets to the heart of Hollywood in many ways They just want to live to fight another day That’s a big theme in this world.” “It seems to me like they’re used to this changing track It’s pretty quick,” O’Hara told TheWrap but at least you were taught by me.’” Rogen confirmed that the character of Patty is based on Amy Pascal the former Sony Pictures Entertainment head who Rogen has thanked in the past for advocating for his controversial North Korean comedy “Amy is someone who was a huge mentor to me and Evan We literally were on the phone with her 48 hours ago asking her advice on whether or not we should do something,” Rogen said “We sent her the show as soon as it was finished We really came up at Sony under her leadership and she was someone who taught us a ton about the industry and who was a really inspirational figure to us in a lot of ways and she’s essential to me and Evan having the careers and lives that we currently have.” “She’s truly living an amazing life It shows how you can evolve in the industry,” Rogen said “The Studio” releases new episodes Wednesdays on Apple TV+ Powered by Announced 2024) – Former USWNT defender Kelley O’Hara one of the most accomplished players in U.S will be honored in a retirement ceremony at halftime of the USA’s Oct O’Hara announced on May 2 that this would be her final professional season with NY/NJ Gotham FC. Gotham FC announced on Sept. 21 that she had been placed on the season-ending injury list and thus, she played her final competitive match on Sept. 8 in a 2-1 win over the Houston Dash. O’Hara played in every senior world championship for the USA from 2011 through 2023, a period that spanned four World Cups and three Olympic Games. O’Hara scored one of the most famous goals in U.S. history when she came off the bench in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup semifinal. She volleyed home a cross from Carli Lloyd for an 84th minute game-clinching goal against Germany to send the USA to the final, which it would win, 5-2, against Japan. O’Hara, 36, was known throughout her career as a great teammate and an intense competitor, even for the elite atmosphere of the USWNT. She finished her USWNT career with 160 caps, currently 21st all-time in U.S. history, and played 10,287 minutes in a U.S. jersey, one of just 23 players to eclipse the 10,000-minute mark for the USWNT. She scored three goals in her international career along with 21 assists. O’Hara hails from Peachtree City, Georgia, and attended Starr’s Mill High School, where she won a state title. She grew up in Fayette County, which as she hangs up her boots, will become the new home of U.S. Soccer as the construction of the new Arthur M. Blank U.S. Soccer National Training Center is underway. Plans are in the works to honor another USWNT legend, the recently retired Alex Morgan, at a USWNT match in the first part of 2025. wheels to send the cream of the crop up to the national level Motorcycle.com had the chance to interview O’Hara over Zoom to find out more about the GP World Cup You’ll find the transcript of our interview below which has been edited for clarity For those watching this and haven't heard anything about this I'm from Northern California and when I grew up there was a group of us that we raced together in Supermoto USA That was the place where we went and we had competition and we had a good group of kids I've been very fortunate and blessed that I've extended my career racing with Factory Indian Motorcycles and now I'm in a position to give back and there hasn't really been much going on in Northern California For me and fellow Northern Californians Hawk Mazzotta we really need to put something together and give these kids an opportunity.” So we've collaborated with Moto America and Mission Foods and we have a Northern California Mission Mini Cup national qualifier We got John Hopkins on board down at Ohvale USA (Hopkins is the US importer - Ed) and for any kids that are new or interested we have an “arrive and race” rental program so you don't have to go buy an Ohvale but just really trying to create the most entry-level educational grassroots way to get kids on track with [Ohvale] GP160s We have all six MotoAmerica qualifying classes and the Street GP for [Honda] Groms and [Kawasaki] Z 125s and such We'll be racing at Sonoma Raceway Karting Center It's one of the nicest karting facilities in the country and it's been a long time since we've had a race up there so I'm really excited to be able to bring it back to Northern California We will have a new racer school with Hawk Mazzotta Moto Camp So basically we got the “arrive and race” rental program We’ll have a parking lot drill area and there'll be two free practice sessions included with the schooling a real general track introduction to really just kind of introduce people to the racetrack We're all about getting exposure to these kids and giving them an opportunity that I wish I had when I was a kid because this is such a great opportunity all you have to do is start the race and one of the qualifying classes and you'll get 10 points Those 10 points will transfer over to the national championship in August at Road America it's a shortcut to become a national champion in two races you can really hone in your skills and then you can go win a national championship Then there’s the “arrive and race” rental program that we have with John Hopkins We’re just giving these kids a visual representation that you can do it and if you just keep them on the right track and give them some inspiration expose some parents to the world of road racing Because when I was dirt tracking and growing up and for me you had to be 16 to be on the big track the operating expenses are very high at proper track cheaper way of gaining asphalt experience at a much slower But the fundamentals and everything apply right to the big bike We just need to get a grassroots youth program going and it’s really exciting If you finish top three in the Ohvale championship on the 160 and the 190 I mean there's a lot of really cool things happening right now for the youth movement and I'm really excited to be a part of it What is the date of the Mini Cup qualifier at Sonoma We’ll have a Friday practice from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the afternoon It's a pretty early program just because we have time restraints and such but basically there'd be two practice sessions And then the Ohvale classes have two main events because there is contingency available So as a racer instead of having a qualifying and heat race TO: It's a great opportunity and I'm hoping we can get a lot of new kids I had about five dirt track kids out last Monday I got a DTX 19-inch class [for dirt trackers] to really try to just get new faces and exposure and had them riding around I put them on my Ohvale and did some parking lot drills like we're going to do at the racetrack during the race weekend with Hawk Mazzotta I put them on my [Kawasaki] Ninja 400 to give these kids an eye-opening and broaden their horizons MO: I want to touch on something you mentioned earlier There's just two rounds potentially to become a Mini Cup National Champion will there be any sort of mentorship or are you going to be keeping in touch with some of these kids in between that time There are definitely places to ride and train I'm going to do what I can to try to get the next champion coming from Northern California for sure (laughs) MO: Let's take a turn here and go back to your beginnings you've got the supermoto and the dirt track background What were the early beginnings for you then And then was there a point at which you were like things are getting serious and there really is a really difficult path for me to go forward because the European kids just have all kinds of things going on,” but the United States is kind of in this no man's land with respect to motorcycle roadracing TO: For me, I grew up racing flat track over at Lodi Cycle Bowl and a lot of great racers came out of there; the Bostrom brothers A lot of these really talented riders came out of there and I grew up basically racing in the dirt and I didn't know really anything about asphalt besides the Bostrom brothers They were from my hometown and I always looked up to them There was a point when I was racing a little bit of everything in the dirt and started to get hurt I really took a big step back and had to take a look at the big picture and where I wanted to be I knew that in motocross you had a career from about 16 to 23 years old At about 26 years old you're about broken and you're a veteran and that's kind of your window which was the most natural transition to the asphalt I really honed my skills on the asphalt and learned that asphalt in a much cheaper way to operate Learning the asphalt is where I transitioned into supermoto and I kind of caught the tail end of the glory supermoto days Trying to get into road racing was just a foreign world I didn't know anything about it and I just really had to dive in and had a steep learning curve and there was really no feeder program other than supermoto That was the asphalt riding that we got exposed to trying something new and having a great feeder program where they can build their resume up Getting riders noticed at a younger age and really raise the competition level up is really what we need to do and have these kids compete and have a place to compete They ride flat track with the front brake and they're always training and riding Everything that I'm trying to do is just to replicate the formula for myself and then trying to get these kids out there at a younger age to just do the same I think now there's more of an opportunity to go straight to GP than ever that was my next question was did you ever pursue anything in Europe Did you ever try to make any sort of mark on the European scene or was that not really an option for you I just really thought my dream was to be an American Superbike champion and I always kind of envisioned to be on a Japanese motorcycle and then I found my niche racing Big V-Twins and I pursued that and I did really well at it You got to find your niche and dominate your niche and you got to do what works for you and race in a class where you can compete and win That's the path I took and I'm really grateful and happy that I did because now I'm representing Indian Motorcycle on a factory team never in my wildest dreams; it couldn't get any cooler MO: Going back into getting more kids and more representation from the younger side of American Riders you must get bombarded by youngsters trying to get a helping hand from you or from any of these bigger name riders that they have access to I'm assuming what you're doing right now is spawned by all this attention you guys are getting from the bagger series and kids asking you TO: I'm so passionate about it and I love what I do. I'm very grateful to be able to be in a position that I can give back to these kids. I mean, we had two bikes on display just this last weekend at the Santa Rosa indoor flat track sit on it and just see their eyes light up and just really understand this is something that they can do and make a living at it's probably one of the toughest jobs in the world to make a living at if you really stick yourself out there and put in the work With the opportunities and stuff that we have coming down the pipe with John Hopkins and Ohvale USA; the sky's the limit The parents are a little bit skeptical because it is asphalt but I just was explaining to someone yesterday that in my opinion the career span of a roadracer is a lot longer than Supercross and dirt bikes because it's not how fast you crash That's what I heard a long time ago; you can crash at 100 mph and you can skid down the road and you can get back up and you're good but I'm in my thirties now and I'm racing and I'm able to continue to learn and get better every year and push myself MO: I saw a press release that you guys sent out about this event and there are a ton of classes like you mentioned but one class in particular that caught my eye was but it's basically for the former Junior Cup bikes in MotoAmerica That's an interesting one to me because obviously there's a lot of kids in that early to mid teenager range that are very used to these Ninja 400s and the [Yamaha] YZF-R3s and such but there's really no class for that anymore it seems pretty clear that you're trying to cater to those kids or to those riders with that class basically it's a 500cc twin-cylinder max cc race and that's what I train on That's what a lot of us train on when we go out to the kart track; we get a lot of seat time giving an opportunity for these kids that have a Ninja 400 or KTM 390 or R3 a place to go race and compete Just touching on that, Rumble Strip Rentals is going to have R3 motorcycles available for rent as well to compete in the GP World Cup I’m trying to maximize the opportunity for these kids that are just a little bit older for the Ohvale class hopefully we'll get some riders to show up and race for some money and they’ll get to hold up a big cup And I just think it's such a fun class and I think we just needed to do something MO: How involved are you going to be with this TO: Yeah, I'm promoting it. I'm renting the track, I'm working directly with sponsors and just really working on my personal sponsors and people that I know in the industry. They're really rallying behind me and supporting us. It's about giving back. I have contracted Sierra Nevada MiniMoto Championship to run the event I’m basically trying to delegate the actual event Hawk Mazzotta is taking the lead on the schooling John Hopkins is going to be there with Ohvale USA and he's taking the lead on the rentals He's going to have a parts trailer and I got staffing and people working the gate I'm going to be hopefully guest instructing Get out there and ride with the pros and just kind of rub off on them a little bit and just kind of influence them and inspire them MO: How much are the kids going to have access to you I'm going to have a little autograph signing and passing out posters I'm going to be passing out trophies and awards and really be super involved I'm very grounded and just humble and excited I'm going to be racing in Daytona the weekend before I'm looking forward to it and it's going to be a blast MO: Here's a follow up question to that: How much will the parents have access to you That's the thing with promoting is you kind of answer all the questions I'm doing the best I can to answer all the questions from the parents about safety and what to wear and gear John Hopkins is talking about bringing up leathers for kids that don't have leathers I'll be running around doing my best to just make sure everybody's happy and having a good time MO: For kids and parents who maybe are on the fence about doing this especially if they're younger kids and parents of younger kids: What would you say to calm them down and ease their fears and make them excited to come join you guys TO: For us, it's about safety and really learning the basics and really having the Hawk Mazzotta Moto Camp School the New Racer school and having a real introduction It's going to be real entry-level and it's at the kart track It's the best place in my opinion to really get your feet wet and just understand the asphalt You can see older kids and just understand the progression where you can start out with a Stacyc class and just really get exposed to it and just start small and keep it simple and have a stock 50 or a stock 110 MO: I think that what you're trying to say is you've thought about this a lot and there's going to be a lot of protocols to really help young kids newer riders really feel comfortable in this environment And that's the whole thing that we've kept going around One is just trying to get kids on the track and then obviously making the parents feel comfortable and confident that we're going to put them in a great environment before they even head out to the track having a guest instructor like myself or Hawk or whoever shows up to really just show them around and break it down safe environment to go have fun with your family TO: You could check us out on social media. I think he needs to sit down and ask himself, ‘Is it worth it? Am I going to further tarnish my reputation?’” said Davies when speaking to BoxingScene “Because that has been tarnished after the Catterall fights and the Teofimo Lopez fight The Taylor that we all know was a fierce fighter; walked through anyone “Now a lot of people are looking at him like a joke DAZN's Black Friday offer gives fight fans huge savings to watch the most exciting fight nights for even cheaper UK viewers get up to 33% off their subscription whether signing up for the first time or renewing a lapsed account and $112.5 0 down from $224.99 in the US broadcasting over 150 fights a year across boxing will get you a ringside seat to the biggest fights still to come this year and into 2025 Sign up here for a DAZN subscription at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore Dennis was the beloved son of the late Charles and Emma (Zanzinger) O'Hara both in his professional endeavors and personal passions playing varsity football at the University of Maryland His talent on the field earned him the prestigious Bob Beal-Tommy Marcus Award for Best Overall Lineman in 1972 He held the all-time quarterback rushing record in a single game at the University of Maryland a record that stood from 1969 until 2011—a testament to his skill and determination Dennis made a lasting impact in his professional life as a Marketing Representative at Atlas Oil Company He was also a founding member of the Order of the Crop in Charlottesville Dennis found joy in golfing and woodworking hobbies that allowed him to express his creativity and love for the outdoors who cherished his family and the time spent together and kindness will be remembered by all who knew him.  Christine O'Hara (Scott) Raker of Roanoke VA; sons Dennis Sean (Stephanie) O’Hara of Stamford Charles Robert (Melissa) O’Hara of Charlotte Averie Michelle (Devon Martin) Full of New Iberia Charles Robert O’Hara of Spring City Joan (Paul McDade) O’Hara of The Villages contributions may be made to Tunnel to Towers https://t2t.org/donate/ or The American Heart Association 131 Continental Dr # 407 DE 19713 https://www.heart.org/?ip_et_ctx=23975212_5_1 Best Dressed at Met Gala 2025 - Top 32 Red Carpet Looks Revealed! Following his knockout win over Ohara Davies last weekend Adam Azim is turning his attention towards some other British rivals Azim is so confident in that he outclasses both fighters that he tells campaigns Adam Azim served further notice of his star quality with a comprehensive eight-round beatdown of experienced British super-lightweight rival Ohara Davies 9 KOs) and Davies were one-time prolonged ordeal at the Copper Box Arena The man 10 years Azim's senior suffered a badly damaged nose before hitting the canvas in round five A fourth career loss was dealt to Davies after one minute MORE: The Sporting News's men's pound-for-pound rankings largely on account of his fizzing hand speed although Davies showed greater variety with his strong left lead in the second Attempts to land a chopping overhand right off the jab were less successful for the Londoner although one did get home after taking some of Azim's shorter left hook was Azim's best work of a fourth round where Davies started to look a little laboured It was more of a gush by the fifth and Azim stepped things up again observing a compromised and weary foe before him Davies was down from a left uppercut to the body and plodded straight back into the fire with Azim crunching a left hook into the top of his head There was a systematic quality to the unbeaten man's work as he wobbled Davies again with a right The sixth brought relative respite before Davies missed with a couple of winging left hooks and Azim went through the repertoire in the final 30 seconds catching and countering his opponent's brave but increasingly crude attacks The finish came in precision style as Azim worked off his snapping jab to thud a left hook behind Davies' left hook The former British and Commonwealth champion crumpled to
