suggestion of Dr founder of the Taiyo-no-Ie welfare facility and specialist in medical care for the disabled to mark the International Year of Disabled Persons it is an official World Para Athletics event and has grown into one of the leading marathons in the world Honda has been a sponsor of the event since 1990 The 39th Oita International Wheelchair Marathon was held on November 17 A combined 236 athletes from 19 countries entered the marathon and half marathon Honda provided support to its sponsored athletes through its team of support staff and its cheer group of more than 150 associates Team Honda managed to achieve outstanding results at the marathon; it succeeded in providing athletes with the satisfaction of victory 1st/Manuela Schär (in a new world record of 1:35:42) I managed to win and set a new world record – it was an unbelievably good race and everyone was very polite before the race Sport has a special meaning for me—it gives me inspiration and life-long memories My next goal and motivation is Tokyo 2020.  Honda’s support team was fantastic and I was in good condition myself—and this contributed to the result I was thinking about retiring after Rio 2016 and this gave me the motivation to keep fighting until Tokyo 2020 I intend to prepare thoroughly and compete to the best of my ability I caught the flu in the lead up to the marathon so I was quite anxious when I lined up at the start Honda’s glove designer made adjustments to my gloves which enabled me to push my wheels with greater stability; I was therefore able to race with greater confidence in my stamina Adjustments are still being made to my KAKERU FLG so I haven’t used it yet—but I’m looking forward to seeing it completed You never know: when I receive my KAKERU FLG Texas - The 9th annual Oita ATX Japan Festival was held Sunday September 22nd at the Long Center for the Performing Arts.Oita Japan is one of Austin's 13 "Sister Cities," and this festival celebrated 34 years of connecting cultures Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) on stage One of the popular activities was the Austin Japan Community's "Whisk Your Own Matcha" experience CBS Austin was well-represented at the festival with Weekend Anchor Adela Uchida and We Are Austin host Trevor Scott emceeing at the Rollins Theatre and Chief Meteorologist Chikage Windler emceeing at Dell Hall The Oita Japan Festival is hosted by the Austin-Oita Sister City Committee which is already planning a delegation to visit Oita next year for the 35th anniversary of the relationship between the two cities https://www.austinoita.org/ Sanrio theme park Harmonyland announced on March 17 that it has partnered with Oita Airport to rename the airport to “Oita Hello Kitty Airport.” Harmonyland notes "the warmest airport in the world" will take this moniker from April 13 to October 13 and Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters will greet travelers to the prefecture In a press release Sanrio elaborated that the renaming of Oita Airport to “Oita Hello Kitty Airport” is the first part in a tourism campaign for the prefecture Sanrio added that a special shuttle service between the Airport and Harmonyland will run between August and October “Sanrio character parks are only located in two locations — one in Tokyo and one in Oita Prefecture — and Harmonyland is a wonderful spot in Oita Prefecture with a charm that can be shared with the world We hope that by promoting Oita Prefecture as a place people want to visit through this campaign She noted Harmonyland will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2026 and “In conjunction with the Expo 2025 we will be promoting the appeal of Harmonyland and Oita Prefecture through various measures with the keyword 'HELLO from Oita to the world.'” The campaign is being carried out in conjunction with Expo 2025 in Osaka and in collaboration between Oita Prefecture and Sanrio The partnership is based on the Comprehensive Partnership Agreement for Tourism Promotion and Regional Revitalization The aim of the Partnership Agreement was to strengthen Oita Prefectures appeal to domestic and overseas tourists and to revitalize the region The campaign period between Oita Prefecture and Sanrio will be between April 13 to October 13 Oita Prefecture in Kyushu is home to over 4,000 hot springs and is known as the onsen capital of Japan Here you can enjoy this geographic feature with therapeutic baths and even sample some delectable dishes steamed using the heat from below ground But did you know Oita’s hot waters also contribute to clean energy geothermal energy is being harnessed for power and hydrogen Kyushu Electric Power Company’s Hatchobaru Geothermal Power Plant in Kokonoe Town generates 110,000 kilowatts of electricity per hour which is enough to power around 37,000 homes for one year The plant’s use of geothermal does not emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and saves Japan from consuming 200,000 kiloliters of oil for power generation every year according to Kyushu Electric Power Company The Hatchobaru plant also offers guided tours and lectures at its museum so you can learn more about its operations and renewable energy Another plant using geothermal energy is Obayashi Corporation’s hydrogen plant in Kokonoe Town This plant produces “green hydrogen,” which is hydrogen created without emitting carbon dioxide in the production process Hydrogen is considered as a next-generation portable energy because it can be stored in canisters and transferred to local hydrogen fuel stations the plant can produce one kilogram of hydrogen per hour which is enough for a fuel-cell vehicle (FCV) to drive 130 kilometers Oita’s spring waters are not only a source of relaxation enjoy the hot springs and check out the impressive ways these waters are being used to save the environment and preserve natural resources Kyushu Electric Power Company Hatchobaru Geothermal Power Plant Obayashi Corporation green hydrogen production plant Sign up for experience Drum Tao was created in 1993 with the aim to bring Japan’s wadaiko drumming to the world the group has grown to 40 members split into three sub-groups which perform at 150 concerts globally each year the group has performed in for over 9 million people in over 26 countries since 1993 What makes Drum Tao popular is the performers melding traditional wadaiko drums with modern elements and sounds It’s this old-meets-new fusion that has led to the international success of the group as a performance complex complete with an outdoor theater I was able to appreciate the elaborate costumes Drum Tao wears I was also able to enjoy a performance by the group at the Nature Theater an open-air theater overlooking the Oita Mountains The drummers’ rumbling and the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape created an almost sacred experience and I could see why Drum Tao has garnered so many fans worldwide A visit to Oita truly isn’t complete without Drum Tao’s impeccable beats Tickets (Nature Theater): Age 13 and older The Oita International Wheelchair Marathon started in 1981 as the world‘s first international marathon exclusively for wheelchair athletes Driven by the passion to champion athletes who are taking on challenges to make their dreams come true Honda has been providing a wide range of support to such inspiring athletes as the sponsor of this sport event since 1990 has entered this long-established race for the first time in three years Despite of the serious injury she suffered from an accident in 2021 she returned to the track and field at an amazing speed she has been continuing to make great strides by winning a series of international competitions including the 5,000m race where she broke the world record and cemented her position as the top athlete we shed light on her passionate performance in this race her motivation to compete and overcome difficulties and her tireless efforts to continue pursuing her dreams Susannah (far thrilled to get her autograph the opening ceremony was held in the downtown area of Oita City where top athletes from Japan and abroad have gathered along with local competitors and children sought to lead the future wheelchair athletics community It was impressive to see her responding “OK!” welcomingly with a friendly smile to all these youngsters asking for her autograph and a shot of memorable top three (Susannah on the right) competing ferociously to finish first Oita was filled with high spirit and excitement This year's race was open to both professional and amateur competitors that totaled 158 entries The fervor was further enhanced by this year’s lifting of the ban to send hearty audible cheers to the hard-racing athletes from the roadside which had been restricted for the last few years due to the enforcement of strict safety measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 infections Susannah came in the 2nd place after engaging in a head-to-head race with Wakako Tsuchida until just before the finish line The heated battle between the two moved the hearts of so many spectators I was aiming for the world record before the race because my conditions were so good I could not maintain the pace I wanted to keep and ended up competing with two other racers until the finish line.Unfortunately but it was a lot of fun racing with Tsuchida (1st) and Kina (3rd) we got together with Susannah for an interview session that was set after she finished attending the data measuring session and meeting with Honda technical team we asked Susannah about what led her to become a wheelchair athlete and the source of her motivation to overcome difficulties and continue pursuing her dream What is your impression of Oita International Marathon What was the initial trigger that led you to decide on becoming a wheelchair athlete I got into an accident that put me in a wheelchair due to the discrepancy caused by the serious injury I was unable to play the sports I used to love as actively as before I learned about adapted sports from the children’s hospital that I used to go at the time They provided my family the information on how to access this sports facility that offered those opportunities I said to my mother “I want to go!” and when she took me there I saw people playing wheelchair basketball and others engaging in wheelchair racing practices I had so much fun and fell in love with them right away From then on throughout my high school years I continued to do both wheelchair basketball and wheelchair racing I find a lot of enjoyment in wheelchair athletics I also love the community as well as the people I race against I‘ve built great relationships with these competitors and my teammates I am also attracted to the fact that there are many things to learn during the 5,000m race that I entered in 2021 Tokyo Paralympics I slipped in the rain and injured my wrist I learned a lot about how I should prepare to compete better in slippery Even if something doesn’t turn out the way you hoped for That is why I like the phrase "there is no such thing as wasted effort.” What is the source of your passion that gets you working energetically as an athlete I had the best time at the opening ceremony of this event Many children came up to me and we got the chance to interact with one another I am working to be a competitor with an aim to be a role model for younger athletes in adapted sports who they can aspire to be in the future I think it would be wonderful if such interaction with them like the one we had this time help make them realize this is what I can do” and also make their families and friends feel assured that “Yes we should let them do whatever they want to become.” Please give a message to children who are working hard to achieve their dreams you can be in any profession you want to be and do anything you set your mind to do you must be determined to take on the challenges You just have to try." This is the message I want to give to these children My goal as an athlete is to set a world record in the marathon race but I also have two other personal targets: either pursue a career as a nutritionist who can work closely with other athletes or work in a hospital I will be getting my master‘s degree in nutrition science next month so I will keep working hard to achieve both my goal as an athlete and my dream as a nutritionist Registration for the Vertical MRO Conference in Kelowna B.C. is now open! architectural delights of Kamakura – and if you love Japan you probably are – might not be acquainted with Sugimoto-dera situated on the road between Hokoku-ji and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine Legend has it that any rider who passes by without dismounting his horse will take a bad fall and meditate a moment on one of Kamakura’s rustic gems But why am I talking about a temple an hour from Tokyo if my intention is to discuss one in distant Kyushu On a visit to Oita prefecture this past Fall I had the good fortune to join two old friends for a drive around Kyushu’s idyllic Kunizaki peninsula As the centerpiece of our day of scenic motoring we planned a stop at Fuki-ji which is said to be one of the oldest temples in Kyushu There are fascinating religious artifacts to be found along the winding peninsula roads carved into the volcanic tuft during Japan’s Middle Ages by artists unknown in the more distant times when Buddhism was first being transmitted to Japan from Pekche possibly Kyushu’s quasi legendary Ninmo himself built places of worship and hermitage in these same lush valleys what a strange and pleasant surprise to arrive at this bucolic spot and find – dare I say it busing their clamorous groups straight from Oita Airport to Beppu just aren’t selling it (yet.) There are no trains no honeymooner attractions - nothing but the tranquility of a small crossroads far out in the countryside If you should ever have the good luck to arrive here and stand in awe of the enormous cedar and gingko trees home to birds who have never chirped back at English you will enjoy the ambient tones of primordial life possibly punctuated by the peal of a brass temple bell local men laid the groundwork for this sanctuary to a new deity and philosophy of life to answer the question I posed above: As you can discern from the photos bear a striking resemblance in architectural design I would venture to assert that their footprints are nearly congruous corbels and encircling verandas of almost identical design Is this only because both were at some point rebuilt by the Tendai sect which simply economized by using the same blueprint Or was this the preferred style of a Buddhist temple in the early eighth century with both instances faithfully preserved to this day I’m not an expert on the subject – just a fan of fanes United Airlines today launched its new Taipei (Taoyuan)-Guam route while Tigerair Taiwan inaugurated its Taipei (Taoyuan)-Oita NAKATSU, Oita — A memorial service for chickens was held recently in Nakatsu, Oita Prefecture, which promotes itself as the “holy land of fried chicken,” to express gratitude to the animals being consumed.  A group of 16 fried chicken shops in the city holds the ritual annually at the Nakatsu Daijingu shrine. According to the group, there are 42 such shops in the city.  About 20 people, including members of the group, took part in the ceremony on March 6. After around eight kilograms (about 240 pieces) of fried chicken brought by the all 16 member shops was offered to the gods, the priest performed a prayer of thanksgiving. The shop owners offered tamagushi, or branches from a sacred tree, and prayed for the chickens, expressing their gratitude for their daily sacrifice.  The group, called Seichi Nakatsu Karaage no Kai and established in 2010, works to promote the local community. In 2019, it made more than 1,600 kilograms of fried chicken in a single day and was recognized by Guinness World Records for the feat.  “We are all having a hard time due to the rising price of oil and other raw materials,” said Masahiko Inoue, the group’s leader. “But we will do our best to make Nakatsu’s fried chicken more popular.”  USA, Oita — There are about 40,000 Shinto shrines that are called “Hachimansha” or “Hachimangu” in Japan. These are headed by Usa Jingu shrine in Usa, Oita Prefecture, which will celebrate the 1,300th anniversary of its founding this year. By Kenichi Oishi / Yomiuri Shimbun Staff Writer The shrine began the New Year looking fresh. In 2023, renovation work started on the shrine’s Jogu section, which includes the main halls — a national treasure — and the elaborately decorated Chokushimon gate. The work is mostly finished, and a temporary roof protecting the shrine from wind and rain during the work was removed at the end of last year. The renovation work was done by Oyama Shaji Kogyosho, a Fukuoka-based builder well-known for its repairs and maintenance of temples and shrines. The company, which also repaired Usa Jingu’s main halls 10 years ago, changed out the cypress bark on the roofs of the shrine’s two-story Chokushimon gate and the adjacent covered passages, and retouched some of the vermillion paint. The shrine’s Saidaimon gate is also being repaired. “In this milestone year, I hope people will come see this beautiful shrine,” said Masato Oyama, the president of the company. Nowadays, the Kurehashi bridge is open to the public when the envoy visits, and you can walk across the bridge. The envoy is set to pass through this autumn. “I hope people will notice the cypress bark roof, and the beauty of the curvilinear architecture,” said Soryu Yamamoto, a junior priest at the shrine. Making the shrine more accessible to disabled people was a major focus in the latest repairs. In 2022, a graveled road leading to the shrine was partly paved so that wheelchair users may visit the shrine without leaving their seat. “It’s important to create an environment where everyone finds it easy and comfortable to visit the shrine,” said Takayuki Ono, the shrine’s head priest. “There’s always a way to do things that fits with the times.” At Hachimansha shrines, Emperor Ojin is worshipped as Hachiman, or the divinity of lasting luck in war. The origins of Usa Jingu date back to 571, when Hachiman supposedly appeared as a child. The shrine marks 725 as the year of its founding, when Hachiman is said to have been enshrined at the current location. In 769, a revelation from Usa Jingu that said Buddhist priest Dokyo should ascend to the Imperial throne was reported to Empress Shotoku. Dokyo, a man of great power, had found favor with the empress. Wake-no-Kiyomaro, a loyal Imperial retainer, claimed the revelation was a lie, and thereby saved the Imperial line from interruption. This shows just how influential the shrine was. Hachiman was venerated by samurai families, and the deity’s shrines spread all over the country. Among these shrines are such famous examples as the Iwashimizu Hachimangu shrine in Kyoto Prefecture and the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine in Kanagawa Prefecture. During World War II, members of the Imperial Army’s kamikaze squads would visit Usa Jingu to pray for their good fortune in battle. Since the end of war, the shrine has become a tourist spot attracting about 1 million visitors a year. This year will see the broadcast of the anime show “Komekami! Girls,” which takes place in part at the shrine. “We hope to plan some events so that different kinds of people will come here,” said an Usa municipal government official. At Usa Jingu, there is a legend about a massive snake and a grand staircase called the “Hyakudan” (100 stairs). According to the legend, a snake that wanted to live in Hishigata-ike pond in the shrine grounds asked Hachiman to let it live there in return for it building a staircase with 100 steps overnight. The snake built the first 99 steps before dawn, but then Hachiman transformed into a rooster and announced the break of day, so the snake gave up on living in the pond. OITA — A hovercraft tour that takes passengers around Beppu Bay in Oita Prefecture launched on Saturday. The tour’s hovercrafts depart from a terminal in Nishi-Oita. Almost every seat was taken on the first day’s four tours, with enthusiasts from across the prefecture and beyond enjoying the speed of the vessels and the view from them. Oita Daiichi Hoverdrive Co., the company in charge of the tour, operates three amphibious hovercrafts for the tour, each of which has 80 seats. The tour is approximately 16 kilometers long and runs 4 times each on Saturday and Sunday. The company aims in December to establish a new route that would connect Oita City and Oita Airport by a 30-minute trip.
