Gao: I have been looking forward to today very much! Please give me your best regards.
Gao: Yes, I have 62 pages for next month’s installment of the series, which can be found at ……. In addition, I moved just this week, and my house is still full of cardboard boxes.
Okaya: Wow, that’s a lot of work. Gao’s pictures are so dense, so the effort is totally different from my 62 pages.
Gao: I draw my manga in my native language first and then have it translated, so it takes a lot of time for translation, checking, and communication. Moreover, I don’t have a stock of stories at the moment. I have to draw the story while I’m working on the pencils.
Okaya: It looks like you can already translate it yourself.
Gao: No, not at all. I still find it unnatural to translate Taiwanese words into Japanese. What I found interesting recently is that some words commonly used in Taiwan cannot be translated directly into Japanese.
Gao: “我想你”, or in English, “I miss you”. When translated into Japanese, it becomes “I miss you” or “I miss you,” but the meaning as it is is “I am thinking of you. It is a bit more ambiguous than “I miss you” or “I miss you.
Okaya: I see. In Japan, many people might be too shy to say “I miss you” or “I miss you.”
Gao: In Taiwan, it is very common. Not only to lovers, but also to family members. Even my father sends me a line saying “I miss you”.
Okaya: I don’t say “I miss you” to my family. It might depend on the family.
Gao: Around me, my father is the one who says “I miss you” the most. He says, “I want to swim to Tokyo right now.

Japanese sake brewer Mie Takahashi checks the temperature of the mixture fermenting at her family’s 150-year-old sake brewery
nestled in the foothills of the Japanese Alps
She stands on an uneven narrow wooden platform over a massive tank containing more than 3,000 liters (800 gallons) of a bubbling soup of steamed rice
and gives it a good mix with a long paddle
“The morning hours are crucial in sake making,” said Takahashi
Takahashi is one of a small group of female toji
Only 33 female toji are registered in Japan’s Toji Guild Association out of more than a thousand breweries nationwide
Women were largely excluded from sake production until after World War II
Sake making has a history of more than a thousand years
with strong roots in Japan's traditional Shinto religion
But when the liquor began to be mass produced during the Edo period
an unspoken rule barred women from breweries
One theory is that women were considered impure because of menstruation and were therefore excluded from sacred spaces
vice director of the Sakeology Center at Niigata University
“Another theory is that as sake became mass produced
a lot of heavy labor and dangerous tasks were involved," he said
"So the job was seen as inappropriate for women.”
But the gradual breakdown of gender barriers
coupled with a shrinking workforce caused by Japan's fast-aging population
has created space for more women to work in sake production
“It’s still mostly a male-dominated industry
But I think now people focus on whether someone has the passion to do it
She believes mechanization in the brewery is also helping to narrow the gender gap
a crane lifts hundreds of kilograms (pounds) of steamed rice in batches and places it onto a cooling conveyor
after which the rice is sucked through a hose and transported to a separate room dedicated to cultivating koji
all of this would have been done by hand,” Takahashi said
is made by fermenting steamed rice with koji mold
The ancient brewing technique was recognized under UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage earlier this month
Takahashi was not allowed to enter her family-owned brewery
she was given a tour of the brewery for the first time and was captivated by the fermentation process
It was fascinating to learn that those bubbles were the work of microorganisms that you can’t even see,” said Takahashi
who couldn't drink alcohol at the time because she was underage
I thought it was amazing that this wonderful fragrant sake could be made from just rice and water
So I thought I’d like to try making it myself.”
She pursued a degree in fermentation science at the Tokyo University of Agriculture
she decided to return home to become a master brewer
She trained for 10 years under the guidance of her predecessor
and at the age of 34 became a toji at her family brewery
As the brewery enters the winter peak season
Takahashi oversees a team of seasonal workers and production ramps up
hauling and turning large amounts of heavy steamed rice
and mixing thousands of liters (hundreds of gallons) of brew
The master brewer must have the knowledge and skill to carefully control optimal koji mold growth
Takahashi manages to encourage camaraderie in the brewery
catching up with the team as they hand-mix koji rice side by side in a hot humid room
“I was taught that the most important thing is to get along with your team,” Takahashi said
“A common saying is that if the atmosphere in the brewery is tense
but if things are going well in the brewery
The inclusion of women plays an important role in the survival of the Japanese sake industry
which has seen a steady decline since its peak in the 1970s
Domestic alcoholic consumption has dropped
while many smaller breweries struggle to find new master brewers
According to the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association
today’s total production volume is about a quarter of what it was 50 years ago
Koten is among many Japanese breweries trying to find a wider market both domestically and abroad
“Our main product has always been dry sake
which local people continue to drink regularly," said Takahashi's older brother
who is in charge of the business side of the family operation
"We’re now exploring making higher value sake as well.”
He supports his sister's experiments –- every year she creates a limited-edition series
that's meant to branch out from their signature dry product
“My sister would say she wants to try to make low alcohol content
or she wants to try new yeasts -– all kinds of new techniques are coming in through her,” he said
“I want my sister to make the sake she wants

who started at Lafayette College in 1979 as gallery administrator
remembers art exhibitions in a renovated reading room at Van Wickle Hall and rare paintings stored in chicken wire crates with sharp edges
exposed to heat and humidity in attics and basements of academic buildings across campus
“Plant Operations (now Facilities) had been responsible for the art collection
and it happily turned over the administration of the collection to me—I had worked at an art museum before moving to Easton,” she says
Following American Museum Association guidelines and well aware of the visible need to abide by them
she set out to establish a first-class program
properly protecting and storing the College’s art collection
“The collection was scattered in many places,” says Okaya
who retired in 2020 as the College’s first director of art galleries and collections curator
“I had worked in an art museum before coming to Lafayette
I knew that the conditions where the artwork was being stored barely met any kind of conservation standards.”
It seemed that hope was on the way when plans for Williams Arts Center were revealed
but Okaya noticed immediately that no space had been designated for art storage in the design
she was given space at Kirby Hall of Civil Rights
where she stored the artwork first in the basement and then to the attic
heavy works of art to various destinations on campus for exhibits
“I think I complained enough that they moved art storage from the Pardee Hall attic down to the lower level of Kirby Hall
across from Special Collections and Archives,” she says
recalling how rainwater would cascade down the back stairs and seep under the door jamb into the corridor between art storage and archives
architects proposed moving the art to the attic
a secure controlled space with access via an elevator
but the problem was that the collection was not accessible,” Okaya says
“There wasn’t a place to bring students or researchers who wanted to look at the collection easily
It was not until 2018 when she found a permanent home at Williams Center with the opening of the Kirby Art Study Center located in the former Black Box theater
vacated when the theater department moved to the downtown campus
She argued that the 2,400-square-foot room would be the perfect and logical location for an art storage/study facility
the Black Box was next to the art history classroom
and off the public lobby of the art center,” Okaya says
The center provides a modern museum-standard environment for the care
which includes the Kirby Collection of Historical Paintings of 18th‐ and 19th-century American art
works created at the Experimental Printmaking Institute (EPI)
Native American pottery and baskets that had also been stored in Pardee Hall
Lafayette joined its academic museum peers in acknowledging the importance of the study of original works of art by students across all disciplines
and the family’s concern for the proper care of the Kirby Collection

Bringing together visual and performing arts
Okaya and Ellis Finger, the first director of Williams Center
often worked collaboratively on pairing art and concerts
highlighting the College’s art collections and exhibits in tandem with the Performance Series or with the Roethke Arts and Humanities Festival overseen by Finger
“I worked with Ellis from the very beginning,” she says
Some exhibitions were directly related to dance
Examples include gallery installations In the Absence of Memory by Ping Chong; an exhibition about genomics in conjunction with a performance of Ferocious Beauty: Genome by Liz Lerman Dance Exchange; an adaption of Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma; Brandon Ballengee’s From Scales to Feathers
which marked the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species; and a performance by butoh performer Taketeru Kudo
in conjunction with Michael Pestel’s multimedia installation Requiem: Ectopistes migratorius
marking the 100th anniversary of the extinction of the passenger pigeon
“I thought it was really important to have the gallery open when there were public events in the Williams Center,” she says
“The Williams Center Gallery has presented a really interesting range of exhibitions from one person
to contemporary work; interdisciplinary exhibitions supported by faculty across campus; and exhibitions developed and curated by faculty colleagues
“Most people might not come specifically to Williams Center to see an exhibition
they’re likely to view exhibitions beforehand and during intermission,” Okaya adds
“It provides opportunities for visitors to have encounters with art that they wouldn’t otherwise experience.”
Among her many remembrances of successful collaborations between the Williams Center Gallery and Performance Series
a 2001 performance by cellist Joan Jeanrenaud stands out
an event in a semester-long Roethke Festival’s “Performance Artist” series
Joan Jeanrenaud presented “Ice Cello” in 2001
Jeanrenaud presented “Ice Cello,” her creative restaging of avant-garde cellist Charlotte Mormon’s “Ice Music in London” (1972)
A full-size “cello” made of ice was played with a variety of bows made of split bamboo
Part of the innovative experience was awareness of the amplified sounds of dripping water from the slowly melting instrument
Composer and sound artist Gregory Kuhn manipulated the sounds and volume of the dripping water itself
“Sometimes you thought it was like rain coming down in a lush forest,” Okaya recalls
People still tell me it was among the best events they ever saw
This is the magic of the Williams Center.”

The manga artist Okaya Izumi has a series called “Would You Like to Drink at My Place?” where she invites guests to her home for drinks and conversation
bassist Shinobu Kawai joins her. Both Kawai and Okaya
who have gained diverse experiences in their respective fields of music and manga
have now naturally arrived at a way of “continuing happily.” This one-on-one drinking session might provide hope for the future to those who create works or work in cultural fields.Don’t miss the recipe for “Grilled Eggplant Keema Curry” served on that day
(The recipe is at the end of the article.)
I’m so glad to read this series of articles because I was so envious of how delicious Ocaya-san’s food looks
You and Kawai have been playing around with various things
such as going to print silk screens together for making goods
learning South Indian cuisine together (*1)
Was it at “Saru Fest” (*2) that we first met
I wish I could remember more and more things
1 The story is in the coterie magazine “Let’s make it
South Indian Set Meals” (Hobby Noodle Making Books)
2 “‘Saru Hage Rock Festival’ (commonly known as ‘Saru Fes’)… An all-night event similar to a cultural festival
and stalls run by creators from various fields such as music
The event is organized by manga artist Kotobuki Shiriagari
Okaya: I have always had a complex and longing for music
I’m having a conversation with a cartoonist friend of mine right now about
“If you were to play a musical instrument
what would it be?” I was talking about it with a manga artist friend of mine
Okaya: There are bands of manga artists and writers performing at “Saru Fes,” and maybe writers want to play in a band when they reach middle age
Music is good to be able to play with other people
Manga can’t be drawn with other people
There is no such thing as creating with others
I don’t usually work in the public eye
so I guess that makes me want to be out there
It makes you want to do something like a presentation
Kawai: I think you should definitely do that
Okaya: In your improvisational live performances
or do you just play along and decide “this is how it’s going to be done” before you go on stage
Okaya: So you have to try it out on the spot
So there are times when you can tell by watching that “it’s not going well”
Kawai: Sometimes such occasions arise because I haven’t decided anything
but “uninterestingness becomes interesting
but “uninterestingness becomes interesting.” If you try to control the situation by trying to liven it up or make it look cool
I’ve never done anything too improvisational
Kawai: It’s like talking in front of people without a script
a few people get together and do something like “please make a haiku in the next two hours,” and then a “good haiku for the occasion” is created
Okaya: I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do that with my performance

A central area of Japan's Nagano Prefecture has raised its profile in recent years as a moviemaking hotspot
with major productions including the Oscar-winning "Godzilla Minus One" filming there and the local economy seeing tourism by movie lovers from Japan and overseas
comprising six municipalities on the shores of Lake Suwa and in the nearby mountains
has become popular not only for its scenic terrain
but also for its convenient proximity to Tokyo and its readiness to accommodate film projects
Academy award earlier this month for best visual effects
was filmed in the region at a former government office building in Okaya
The film's director Takashi Yamazaki was drawn to the untouched
old-fashioned style of the location for the story set in the 1940s
"I'm happy that people all over the world are watching a movie filmed in my hometown," said Mika Oguchi
a local who appears in the film as an extra
Other notable works filmed in the same area include "Kaibutsu" (Monster)
awarded best screenplay at last year's Cannes International Film Festival
for which Genki Kawamura became Japan's first winner of best director honors at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain in 2022
Although the Suwa area has only recently become known as a staging ground for world-famous movies
its status came about through long-standing efforts to promote and facilitate filming in the area
there were "no major film projects at all" for several years following the body's launch in 2006
and personally scouting locations to meet the requirements of every filmmaker
he helped to elevate the area's reputation
the film commission had attracted a total of over 100 productions
The success has also prompted an increase in tourism as movie fans
including those from countries like South Korea and the United States
make pilgrimages to various sites in the region where popular films were shot
The local economy reaped at least 104 million yen ($700,000) in fiscal 2022 from such visits
according to an estimate by the commission
head of tourism in the Suwa city government
welcomed the boost from internationally prominent films
"Being chosen as a filming location can help spread the word about the area's appeal," he said
The growing popularity of the area among filmmakers
secretary general of the Tokyo-based Japan Film Commission
owes in part to its location just a two-hour drive from the capital
"Many producers are also impressed by the terrain
with mountain ranges seemingly on all sides of Lake Suwa," she said
"I want to attract movies that will be handed down for generations
ensuring the Suwa area's place in history" as the filming location of masterpieces

Electric scooters have gained massive popularity in Asia
The first is definitely price—electric scooters are cheap to buy and maintain
This is especially true with all the budget-focused offerings in the market
as they offer the same level of convenience as gas-powered two-wheelers
In fact you could argue that they're even more convenient
undercutting the price of some of the more affordable scooters in the market by quite a margin
With a top speed of just 55 kilometers per hour (34 miles per hour)
it's barely faster than some electric bicycles
it's packing nothing more than an 800-watt hub motor mated to a 2.2-kilowatt-hour battery pack
that it has a claimed range of 80 kilometers (50 miles) on a single charge
To keep the cost down, Okaya has kept the technology of the Faast F2F quite simple
Telescopic front forks up front and hydraulic spring-loaded shock absorbers at the back of the scooter serve as the suspension system
instead of disc brakes customarily found on e-scooters of this size
this electric scooter has three driving modes (Eco
the Okaya Faast F2F retails for a mere Rs 83,999
making it one of the most affordable electric scooter options in the Indian market
It'll be offered in six color options consisting of Metallic Black
