Shinji Kanesaka restaurant group with the opening of his eponymous sushi-ya Oshino at the Raffles Hotel Singapore the moody, darkened Edo-era sushi-ya setting is distinct from Shinji's light and bright style and the cuisine of Oshino also focuses heavily on sushi by departing from the usual order of courses to intersperse sushi in between cooked dishes "I am very excited to have my name on the door because this restaurant is truly 'Oshino-style which is built on what I have developed after 10 years with Shinji," says the chef The Look Blink and you’ll almost certainly miss it — Oshino lies behind an unmarked door by a lift lobby adjacent to Raffles Courtyard But step through its doors into the darkened entryway and you’ll be instantly transported to an elegant teahouse setting from the Edo period 400 years ago The new restaurant occupies the 900 square feet space where Ah Teng’s Bakery used to be and seats just nine along its hinoki wood sushi counter Inspired by traditional sushi-yas of the era Oshino’s interiors are darkened and intimate and its walls and ceilings are clad in black bamboo Designed by industry veteran Junzo Irikado the centerpiece of the restaurant is a piece of 2500-year-old jindai-sugi (lignitised Japanese cedar) which was buried in BC466 and later carefully harvested from the volcanic remnants of Mt Chokai in Yamagata it takes pride of place as a beautiful counter set behind the chef as he works “Everything is very personal to me,” he says pointing out the restaurant’s logo — bearing his family crest — emblazoned on the back of each seat and the spotlights that cast an atmospheric circle of light on the hinoki wood counter in front of each diner “I like to think that I am presenting each of my sushi creations in a beam of moonlight.” The Cuisine Oshino focuses on classic Edomae sushi cuisine and its unique traditions I always noticed that by the time diners ate the cooked dishes and sashimi they were too full to enjoy all the sushi,” explains the chef we focus on the sushi and we serve it throughout the meal between the other dishes.” The devil is in the details for connoisseurs who can expect a different experience from that at Shinji the chef has created his own blend of sushi vinegar for the shari so that that the rice is tinged with red and bears the sharper flavour profile of a special three-year-aged red vinegar that the chef has sourced The acidity is the perfect foil for the premium seafood and fish served like seaweed-pressed flounder tai (red snapper) and kisu (silver whiting) Each morsel might be brushed with one of five different soy sauces that the chef has infused with aromatics like spring onion and yuzu we believe in the importance of balance and harmony,” he says giving an example of how it extends to his food I always feel like the rice disappears while the flavour of the ebi is still in my mouth there is balance between the kuruma ebi (Japanese tiger prawn) and the sushi rice which I cook in shrimp stock.” The chef also says that his gift to every diner is embedded in his personal philosophy of “Ichigo-ichie” which denotes the fleeting nature of time and the importance of savouring each moment “This is what my father taught me: to treasure every encounter with every person because it will only happen once so each time you come to Oshino it will be a truly unique experience.” Rachel My family and I recently made a couple of stops out of the many worth visiting. Lakeside at the Fuji Five Lakes in Yamanashi prefecture is one. The other, just a short distance away, was recognized in 2013 by UNSECO for its cultural significance. Lake Kawaguchiko is the largest of the five lakes that include Saiko, Yamanakako, Shojiko and Motosuko. We visited the lake’s north shore during a midweek trip to get one of the best views of Japan’s highest mountain. Fortunately we found plenty of free parking. Oishi Park, through which we accessed the lake, gives you a wide view of it and Mount Fuji. From spring to late fall, a variety of flowers bloom in the park on Flowers Road. It spans a distance of about 1,150 feet. A small monument honoring Mount Fuji stands on the way to the shoreline. Looking out from the lake’s edge with Fuji in the backdrop was a sight to see and very serene. The photos you’ll take there could be frame-worthy. The park advertises fruit picking, including cherry, blueberry and tomato, from summer to fall. The Kawaguchiko Natural Living Center has a cafe, snack shop and gift items. I grabbed an organic coffee before heading down the road to Oshino Hakkai, part of the Mount Fuji UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, just 20 minutes away. Although not part of our stop, the lake is near Fuji-Q Highland, a popular amusement park, featuring high-speed roller coasters and other attractions. At Oshino Hakkai, you can view Wakuike, a 13-foot deep, spring-fed pond teeming with koi. Wakuike, one of eight ponds there, is so clear blue that the bottom is clearly visible. The ponds receive their fresh water from snow melting from Mount Fuji’s slopes, according to the Yamanashi-kantou website. The place attracts lots of local and foreign visitors. You’ll find fresh fruit and vegetable vendors inside the main building. Several gift shops sell Fuji souvenirs and other local items. There is a lot of recreation to be had around Mount Fuji, and many more trips are in the works to enjoy them. Directions: Within a two-hour drive of most U.S. military bases in the Tokyo area. Times: Oishi Park and Fuji World Heritage are open all day. Food: Both areas offer a variety of food, snack and drink options. Volume 11 - 2017 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fnbeh.2017.00030 General electric devices and ventilation systems are known to generate low frequency noise (LFN) with frequencies of <100 Hz Previous studies showed that exposure to LFN caused impairments of balance in humans and mice during adulthood a previous study showed that noise levels in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) were greater than those in general home or office environments it is possible that neonates have a potential risk to be exposed to LFN in the NICU the risk of neonatal exposure to LFN remains unclear in humans and mice male ICR mice were exposed to LFN at 100 Hz for 4 weeks after birth and then subjected to rotarod and beam crossing tests in order to assess LFN-mediated risk of imbalance during the neonatal period during the neonatal period significantly decreased performance scores for rotarod and beam crossing tests compared to the scores of the control group The number of calbindin-positive hair cells in the saccule and utricle was decreased in mice exposed to LFN at 70 dB for 4 weeks in the neonatal phase Cessation of exposure for 10 weeks did not result in recovery of the decreased performance in rotarod and beam crossing tests our results suggest that 70 dB is a possible threshold for exposure to LFN for 4 weeks during the neonatal period causing unrecoverable imbalance in mice we are potentially exposed to LFN generated from many devices including public transportation ventilation and air-conditioning devices) and household devices (e.g. refrigerators and freezers) in daily and occupational environments previous studies have suggested that LFN can cause health problems in human adults there is no information about the influence of exposure to LFN during the neonatal period on health risks hair cells in the saccule and utricle play an important role in balance In a previous study, occupational exposure to LFN was shown to cause impairments of vestibular functions assessed by a caloric test in human adults (Doroshenko and Stepchuk, 1983). Our previous study showed that exposure to LFN at 70 dB for 4 weeks during adulthood affected scores of rotarod and beam-crossing tests in mice (Tamura et al., 2012) these previous studies suggest that exposure to LFN during adulthood increases risks of imbalance in humans and mice there is no information about risk assessment of exposure to LFN in a developmental stage we performed experiments in which wild-type mice were exposed to LFN during the neonatal period to assess the risk for imbalance ICR mice and C57BL/6J mice (Japan SLC, Hamamatsu, Japan) were separately bred in a specific pathogen-free (SPF) environment with room temperature at 23 ± 2°C and a 12-h light/dark cycle as previously described (Tamura et al., 2012) All experiments were approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee in Nagoya University (approval number: 28251) and Chubu University (approval number: 2810030) and followed the Japanese Government Regulations for Animal Experiments Rotarod analysis after exposure to LFN for 4 weeks during the neonatal period (A) A photograph of the exposure setting of low frequency noise (LFN) for mice The arrow indicates a speaker and arrowheads indicate breeding cages (B–D) After exposure to LFN at 100 Hz (B) a rotarod test and (C,D) a beam-crossing test were performed at 4 weeks of age mean ± SEM) and (D) number of hind limb slips per mouse (mean ± SEM) on the beam were recorded for the control group (n = 4) and neonatal exposure group (n = 4) Significant difference (**p < 0.01; every fan of the long running Monogatari franchise ever since the character’s first appearance back in Monogatari Second Season There have been a few hints and clues about her (or him?) but the identity of the character remains one of the biggest mysteries that the show has yet to solve Owarimonogatari is the seventh entry in the monstrously popular series that starts to shed a little more light on Ougi Oshino as well as delving into the backstory of series protagonist Koyomi Araragi and the events that shaped him Owarimonogatari starts off with the two episode arc Ougi Formula which sees Ougi and Araragi trapped inside a classroom by an apparition the pair quickly deduce that the room is an oddity created by a traumatic memory from Araragi’s first year of High School trapped him and the rest of his math class in a classroom until they found out who was responsible for leaking answers for an exam something he and his class failed to do two years ago This opening arc is a brilliant start for the series and is a fairly unique arc as far as Monogatari is concerned The episodes are firmly planted in the mystery genre which is something that the franchise has rarely dabbled in before The mystery element does a great job of reeling you in quickly and keeping you engaged throughout My only real complaint with how the mystery is handled is that I don’t really think the viewer has a lot of time to try and figure out the mystery for themselves I often feel part of the appeal of mystery shows is to try and figure it out yourself these two opening episodes also do a great job of showcasing the fantastic visuals of Monogatari and why they’re so important The majority of this episode is just Ougi and Araragi talking in a classroom with some flashbacks thrown in for good measure In the hands of almost any other studio besides Shaft (Madoka Magica Nisekoi) this would have been incredibly boring yet the visuals here are unlike anything you can find outside of the series as whole It’s legitimately quite hard to tear your eyes away from the screen Following up on Ougi Formula is Sodachi Lost which continues on from where Formula left off who after being wrongly accused of being the one to leak the test answers and leaving school Upon reuniting for the first time since their first year in High School Sodachi immediately starts to berate Araragi claiming she despises him for not recognizing the origin of his happiness Araragi confides in Ougi and determines that the key to Sodachi’s hatred of him lies in a shoe locker Whilst the unique mystery-centric theme that ran through the first arc is still here as you’d expect from your more standard Monogatari story Despite the name of the arc being Sodachi Riddle I think that Araragi himself comes away with the most added depth in this arc This is something we haven’t been shown before so to finally witness our male protagonist getting fleshed out is fantastic I think fans who have read the Kizumonogatari book will especially love the connection to the opening inner monologue where Araragi says friends will ‘lessen his intensity as a human’ these episodes deliver a better introduction to Oikura too although she gets far more attention in the following arc The third and final story arc on Part 1 of Owarimonogatari is Sodachi Lost Whilst this arc is probably my least favourite of the arcs I just don’t really think it shines as brightly as the preceding arcs The biggest reason for this is that the first of the three episodes feels a lot like filler All that happens in the entire twenty minute episode is that Araragi goes to Oikura’s house from school This is something that could have easily been accomplished in half the time This is the final arc in what you could call a loose trilogy that started in Ougi Formula in a much bigger way than the previous arc and this is far better executed than Ougi Formula the main mystery of the arc is presented at the end of Episode 2 giving you time between the episodes to try and figure out the solution yourself as well as delivers plenty of clues before the solution is ultimately given to the audience The only real issue I have with the story is the wrap-up Given that we never see a certain character outside of this arc and this takes place before a lot of the events in Second Season it’s kind of a given that said character was going to disappear before the end or it would have created continuity issues it’s in this arc that Oikura gets a ton of depth and development and she is pretty much the sole focus of the arc and it turns what was initially an unlikable mean spirited character into one that you genuinely feel for which is a pretty great accomplishment considering Oikura herself has only been in a handful of episodes (although I’d expect nothing less from Monogatari at this point) is that whilst Ougi appears in all of the stories we still don’t get too much more information on her despite her starting to take center stage a little more I can only assume she will play a bigger role as the franchise goes on I still feel the need to stress how amazing the visuals in Owarimonogatari are The animation is the best that it’s ever been most notably a short sequence whose designs are clearly inspired by the Powerpuff Girls This is Ken Naito’s third outing as an art director for the franchise As you’d expect if you’ve seen a Monogatari anime before the Japanese voice acting here is absolutely stellar and it’s no exaggeration to say it’s a large part of what makes the show work as well as it does pretty much carry the entirety of the first arc alone and then in other arcs we hear other familiar voices such as Yui Horie Kei Haneoka returns for the third time to score the series as well as having some pretty good songs behind them featuring a clean version of all the openings and the ending this first half of Owarimonogatari delivers three unique and compelling arcs and introduces a fantastic new character as well giving Araragi some much needed fleshing-out all whilst maintaining that wonderful Monogatari charm IncendiaryLemon adores 'Cute Girls Doing Cute Things' anime and occasionally other genres too While I found the first half of Nisemonogartari entertaining, there were problems with a lack of character development for Araragi’s sister Karen during her own arc and the large amounts of fan service. Sadly similar issues occur in the next arc which slightly affected my overall enjoyment. These last four episodes contain the arc ‘Tsukihi Phoenix’, which has the same … Continued “Just as you fill your heart through good deeds, I fill my bank account with evil ones” – Kaiki The next chapter in the Monogatari franchise, Nisemonogatari, attempts to build on the clever writing of Nisio Isin and impressive visuals from Studio SHAFT that has been the core of making the first series so entertaining … Continued Araragi, a high school student and supernatural problem solver, and Shinobu, his 500-year-old vampire companion, would have been killed by the junior high girl turned Goddess Sengoku Nadeko, had Senjougahara, Araragi’s girlfriend, not stepped in to postpone their fate. Nintendo is handing over the keys of its most valuable franchise to gamers, providing a quirky and fun tool for creating, sharing and playing 2D Mario levels. It's been critically acclaimed is at the forefront of Nintendo's Super Mario 30th Anniversary celebrations and is likely to be one of the most successful Wii U releases to date Ahead of release we've been lucky enough to catch up with Super Mario Maker's game director posing a few questions about how the game came together and his hopes for its role in the Nintendo community We also learn about the less glamorous - and coincidental - genesis of the project Was the concept for Super Mario Maker originally conceived with the Wii U and Mario's 30th Anniversary in mind or was it an evolution of a longstanding idea within the walls of Nintendo This being Mario's 30th Anniversary is just a coincidence The idea started with the course editor for the side scrolling Mario games but the team in charge of it thought that it might be helpful for developing future Mario games if the tool ran on the Wii U GamePad and so they started doing some experiments While doing this they realized how easy it was to make courses and how fun it was for people like them who had no experience with level design So they decided to bring the idea of making this tool into a game to the producer What were some of the challenges in including elements from New Super Mario Bros U and Super Mario World and making them work in the 8-bit Mario style We understood already from the tool team's prototype that the close connection between the aspects of "Creating" and "Playing" was a key point so we were careful to make sure this was not lost nostalgic attachment to the original games so we made sure that we'd create something that would match the expectations of these people so that they too can enjoy the game As we based the physics on those in New Super Mario Bros the game is just as easy to play no matter what game style you pick Since the game style or theme can be changed at any point we had to create new art for enemies that weren't originally in the respective games versions of the airship and ghost house themes So you will be able to experience these in a brand new way What key design decisions were made when developing a level creator and user interface which would be intuitive enough for anyone to pick up easily Were there concerns about making it too complex if we over-emphasised the game's tool aspect then it would tend get too complex We instead designed the interface around the idea that Super Mario Maker should be something fun that anyone can play We worked hard to reduce the number of buttons as much as possible so that we could reach as wide an audience as we could then along with the more advanced features that it would bring it would also increase the barriers for people to start making courses So we had a lot of discussions within the team about the balance between having enough features and making sure it doesn't feel too daunting the content included in the game has increased rapidly Was much of this planned from the beginning or did it evolve naturally as development progressed at E3 2014 we already had the idea that we wanted the Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World game styles in addition to Super Mario Bros And also the idea users should be able to upload their courses to a server to share with people around the world So there wasn't any big changes to the core ideas as development went on we never stopped to look for additional ways of making the game more fun have increased beyond what we originally planned What were some of your personal thoughts on the Nintendo World Championships during E3 this year and I could sense the excitement when they were playing Super Mario Maker in the final I was worried that it would be too difficult and they wouldn't be able to beat it but they astonished me with how well they could play courses they had never seen before It's really fun just watching people play through difficult courses like that with such skill What are your hopes for the online sharing aspects of this game and what sort of content do you most hope to see from Nintendo fans I hope that users will actively post their courses online without shying away and that when they see a course they like they will give them stars or post comments so the creators will be motivated to create more and even better courses you will notice the spots where other players failed as they will be marked with an "X" I hope people will enjoy seeing how others fared on the same course like this I'm looking forward to discovering how users will combine enemies and objects in creative ways coming up with unique courses that perhaps not even the development team could imagine You can find courses that are currently popular in the 100 Mario Challenge and on the Featured Courses list so I hope people will enjoy playing these And it might also be fun to try playing new courses nobody else has played before in the Up & Coming list Do you feel that games like Super Mario Maker (and other such as Mario vs in which creative tools are given to gamers to express themselves in Nintendo titles will continue to increase in importance for the company Online games using UGC have become popular all around the world and I think they have established themselves as a distinct genre Super Mario Maker is one such game using UGC that Nintendo has made for users around the globe to enjoy If I have the opportunity again in the future I would very much like to work on another game that uses UGC in some way can you share any tips for our readers to help them create fun and challenging Super Mario Maker levels of their own I think a key point to consider is whom you're making the course for Difficult courses are not necessarily the most fun If you can work on your courses imagining how your players would experience them and aim to make a course they would want to play over and over then this should lead to them enjoying your course more The Artbook that comes with the game contains lots of hints for designing good courses and there are also videos that accompany it The e-manual features some helpful advice as well so I hope you will take a look at that too We'd like to thank Oshino-san for his time Growing up with a ZX Spectrum and a Sega Master System and his exhaustive knowledge in the fields of SEO and digital marketing Darren's organisational prowess helps steer Hookshot's portfolio in the right direction Just one more day and then I can let my creativity run wild with designing courses I already tried this game at Gamestop last Sunday and I promptly preordered it immediately afterwards I'm gonna spend all sunday long playing it I got sent my download code from Gamesrocket earlier I tried to download it but got a message telling me the code can't be used yet and to try again after the release date.I'll have a sneaky try again in a few hours,if that fails I guess I'll need to wait till it's midnight in Europe Edit: And yeah the 8 bit classic Mario Amiibo really is rather large and seems to weigh a hell of a lot more than all the other figures I'd say only the SMC Bowser looks bigger and feels heavier I'm really getting anxious about the fact that GAME haven't emailed me to say my order has been shipped @Nintenjoe64 Sorry I will be waiting at the door at 10:00 AM when my local GameStop opens to pick up my preorder along with a Zero Suit Samus amiibo and put in a preorder for the XCX special edition Gonna have to wait till after school tomorrow though My guess is that mario Maker will be such a hit that loads of developers will want to copy it @tysonfury My hope is that lots of famous developers make levels for it (Disappointingly there's no section in SMM for them It'd be tricky to make it as easy and intuitive as 2D but it would be so cool if they could pull it off @Assassinated I would hope that they make Super Metroid Maker first They could use huge parts of SMM for that by just swapping out some assets So the thing that makes me wonder is whether its that open source Super Mario Bros game which had a level creation tool which is how they got inspired to make Super Mario Maker.... @Artwark Super Mario Bros because it copied not a few features from there Super Mario Flash 2 (google it) which is renowned for it's level editing which has the ability (easter egg) to control Mario in the title screen @Nintenjoe64 I'm in pretty much the same situation and my order says unshipped on their website I asked Game Help on Twitter and they said mine was shipped So it might be a good idea for you to email or Twitter them to see if yours has been shipped I'm still waiting for the final 2 refunds though I got my final refunds by the time I phoned We instead designed the interface around the idea that Super Mario Maker should be something fun that anyone can play." I think this is something a lot of people don't seem to understand The appeal of Mario Maker isn't just the fact that you can create - but also The easy UI is just as important as any editing features that the game may include - if it was dry and stuffed with text (like 99% of other editors out there) The casual/family audience isn't a new phenomenon that emerged with Wii and DS - it's a demographic that Nintendo has partially catered to since the NES days (simple hardware gonna grab a SMM amiibo bundle for $69 and play the hell out of it when I get home Show Comments Hold on there, you need to login to post a comment..
