Otsu
the latest restaurant by Jesse Newmister and Margaret Stolfi opened in the Mill and Mine last week
bringing a new twist on Asian-fusion restaurant offering a generous menu of dumplings and other Japanese and pan-Asian favorites
While its in the same family of cuisine with their ever-popular Kaizen
the staff described it as a “cousin” rather than a sister restaurant
Urban Woman and I had a recent opportunity to enjoy a meal there and I followed up with a conversation with the owners and staff
Co-owners and managing partners Margaret and Jesse who share ownership with a small group
included GM Erica Schmidt and Chef Erin Parrish in a conversation about the past several years as they worked through the pandemic and out with Tako Taco before taking time off and shifting gears into the next concept
The ups and downs of the last several years have produced a wonderful new restaurant they are all keen to share
Jesse said the concept for the restaurant developed organically as they did pop-ups over the last several months
We did two and they were both wildly popular
We did one with Lawrence at Potchke that sold out in ninety minutes
but it also felt good because (Chef) Erin and I are both passionate about food from the Asian diaspora
we were in Thailand the same year for food travel
Erica (who is of Japanese heritage) has a deep knowledge of Asian culture and and drinks
Margaret said there was some hesitance at first to have two Asian restaurants
with concern about confusion between the two
“The more we dug in to what we really wanted to do
It really faded as we fully developed what it was going to be.”
Chef Parrish said she’d worked in food service
but not in the kitchen before she came to Tako Taco
(Both she and Erica as well as two others have been with this group from the beginning of Tako Taco.) Wanting to be in the kitchen
she heard about Jesse and Margaret and Tako Taco
I was willing to do things that other people were not willing to do
I was willing to step in and make desserts and other things
If there is something that needs to be done
Jesse and Margaret spoke with me about opening up (the new restaurant) and asked if I would be interested in giving Chef a go
but developing a menu for a longer term felt different
She had to consider the everyday preparation as opposed to a one-off
Margaret added that she and Jesse recognized the passion and natural talent in Erin
“It was what we wanted going into a period where we didn’t know exactly what we were going to do and we needed someone with patience and creativity to figure that out
we’d seen both natural talent in the kitchen and leadership qualities
The restaurant staff makes the dumplings and the skins by hand and Erin and Jesse collaborated to get the technique and taste to the quality level they desired
Jesse said developing the menu was “intimidating
but in a good way.” They decided early that they wanted “four to five core dumplings,” and laid out the sections from there
which is all grilled over Japanese charcoal
“We set the template and Erin just ran with it
She and Sous Chef Aiden did the research and development during the down time
We used the down time to our advantage.”
Erin said she hoped to have dumplings that
“I also wanted to focus on having some vegan options.” The current menu is the result of the work of the last months
though the group plans to introduce daily specials as soon as possible
Jesse said they are looking for consistency across the menu items
The restaurant is currently open four days a week
and Jesse said part of that is due to the labor-intensive preparations for the dishes
We only knew it to a certain degree until this past week
Then you have to portion it and make tapioca and wrap them
It’s pretty much that way with all the dishes
Erica Schmidt has been “in the service industry since college.” She studied athletic training
but bartended through college and realized she made more money doing that than she’d make as an athletic trainer
She also loved the constant learning that came with mixing drinks and working in restaurants
bartended at Ruby Tuesday near Jefferson City
She shifted to Cocoa Moon on Market Square
eventually working at at Sapphire for five years
and then moved into management at Preservation Pub and Oodles before shifting to Public House
She joined Tako Taco in 2018 as the Beverage Program Manager
“It was a natural progression through COVID
Matt focused on Kaizen and Margaret and I focused on Tako
We played to our strengths given the environment we were in.” She became general manager of Tako in 2020
though she’s quick to point out she’s done everything from the dishes to every other job
She and Erica have enjoyed working together on the drink and food menus
“We’re all here for the same reason: To make good food and good drink
We’re all having a good time.” Jesse added
“We want to give everyone a spark of joy.”
both inside and out on the wonderful patio
Tony Cheatham with Artifact Custom (located inside Able Trade) did the woodwork
including the beautiful panels on the patio
the table tops and the booth and the bench
It sets the bar high for the food and the food delivers
“We wanted to have a place where you felt transported,” and they’ve achieved it
The pork belly and duck enoki were perfect tastes to share a bite or two for each person
Our favorite among all the dishes surprised us: The Saku Sai Mu
which we ordered only because it was gluten free
turned out to be the taste sensation of the night
Described as a “steamed dumpling with tapioca pearl ‘skin,’ sweet and salty pork and peanut filing
lettuce for wrapping,” the dish is amazing
Jesse and Margaret said it has been a dark horse favorite for many diners
You can check out the full food and beverage menus here (just scroll down)
The restaurant is open 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm Wednesday through Saturday
I thought Tako Taco closed so that the Mill and Mine could use the kitchen space for events
I believe you may have misspelled suis chef
I think you meant Sous which in the French Brigade system means under or assistant to the Chef
Yummmm excited for the new vision and tastes for this space
Love the inclusion of GF and Vegan options
Been missing Tako Taco since it closed (we never vibed with The Green Room)
We enjoy our second Otsu dinner last night

you'll have to track down and talk to Aoi
who is in Otsu's Upper District in Omi
Zoom into Mouth of Seta, found in southern Omi—east of Hills of Meeting and south of Sakamoto.
If you have a scout available, dispatch them to Mouth of Seta to reveal the quest marker. Otherwise, fast-travel to the Mouth of Seta Viewpoint and travel northwest to Otsu Lower District.
Once you arrive in Otsu Lower District, use the look feature (L2 on PlayStation) to spot Aoi. She’s standing near a large red torii gate, just north of the Otsu Kakurega.
Once the cutscene ends, eliminate the ambushers to fill the objective meter on the upper-left of your screen.
Continue attacking until all enemies are defeated. Don’t forget to loot their bodies before leaving.
Completing this mission grants you 1000 XP.
by Ryan Gilliam
and you’ll need to locate an ally to help you get information on him
we’ll walk you through how to find Aoi and how to find the lead on Seta Bridge
Note that you won’t be able to start “An Evening in Otsu” until you unlock Yasuke as a playable character and complete his additional flashback quests
Your first step in “An Evening in Otsu” is to find Aoi
which is in the southernmost part of the Omi province
If you want to use a scout to find her
she’s in the top half of the city on the map
she is just west of the upper district dot
almost directly north of the Otsu Kakurega
hop the fence in front of you and walk a few feet forward until you’re on a road
Look and walk right and you’ll see her standing next to a fence and a lantern with a black and red parasol in her hands
you’ll be told to “find a lead on Seta Bridge.” Your objective marker will automatically change
so follow the guidance line or just go down Otsu’s main street until you find it
(It’s the giant bridge connecting the two sides of the river
not the small bridge just outside of town.)
you’ll find a part that’s been blown up or burned and is currently being repaired
Walk off the bridge and onto the bamboo scaffolding to your left
Take the ladder down (or do a sick flip — you’re a ninja
and read the letter on the boards in front of you
This will cause a cutscene to happen where Naoe waits for the duel later that night
you’ll be back on the bridge and a group of ambushers will be running toward you
Kill them and then move down the bridge toward the next group
After you’ve killed all the enemies on the bridge
Talk to her again to complete the quest and earn 1,100 XP

Introduction: Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a degenerative brain disorder characterized by cognitive and memory dysfunctions
The early detection of AD is necessary to reduce the mortality rate through slowing down its progression
The prevention and detection of AD is the emerging research topic for many researchers
The structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (sMRI) is an extensively used imaging technique in detection of AD
because it efficiently reflects the brain variations
Methods: Machine learning and deep learning models are widely applied on sMRI images for AD detection to accelerate the diagnosis process and to assist clinicians for timely treatment
an effective automated framework is implemented for early detection of AD
the Region of Interest (RoI) is segmented from the acquired sMRI images by employing Otsu thresholding method with Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (TSA)
The TSA finds the optimal segmentation threshold value for Otsu thresholding method
the vectors are extracted from the RoI by applying Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Local Directional Pattern variance (LDPv) descriptors
the extracted vectors are passed to Deep Belief Networks (DBN) for image classification
Results and Discussion: The proposed framework achieves supreme classification accuracy of 99.80% and 99.92% on the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) and Australian Imaging
Biomarker and Lifestyle flagship work of ageing (AIBL) datasets
which is higher than the conventional detection models
Deep Belief Networks (DBN) provide certain advantages over traditional neural networks by utilizing supervised learning and probabilistic modeling
It can process enormous quantities of data and use hidden units to quickly identify underlying correlations through fast training
The above-stated information’s motivates to detect the AD with minimum execution time by employing DBN models
The main contributions of the present article are denoted as follows:
• TSA is integrated with the Otsu thresholding method for precise RoI segmentation in the acquired sMRI images
The main motivation behind the Otsu thresholding method is to maximize the between class variance for determining the optimal threshold value
in the conventional Otsu thresholding method
the TSA is employed to select the optimal threshold value for accurate RoI segmentation with minimal execution time
• Then combined the LBP and LDPv descriptors for extracting texture feature vectors from the segmented RoI
the extraction of global feature vectors from sMRI images is computationally effective and robust
• The extracted global feature vectors are passed into the DBN model for classifying four classes in the AIBL dataset and three classes in the ADNI dataset
In comparison to other classification models
the suggested DBN model efficiently captures non-linear feature vectors from the extracted feature vectors
which improves its ability in discriminating different classes
The performance of the Otsu-TSA method and DBN model are validated in terms of Jaccard Similarity Coefficient (JSC)
The structure of this research is organized as follows; The recent research papers on the topic AD detection are reviewed in Section 2. The details about the proposed methods (Otsu-TSA method and DBN model), and its mathematical equations are described in Section 3; The results analysis and comparisons of the proposed method are demonstrated in Section 4; finally, the conclusion of this research is stated in Section 5
Xiao et al. (2017) performed scaling correction
and gradient warping for enhancing the quality of sMRI images
the textural and morphometric vectors were extracted from the pre-processed sMRI images
the discriminative optimal vectors were selected by applying a recursive feature elimination technique
which were further passed to the SVM classifier for AD detection
The developed framework was only appropriate in the binary-class classification
Ebrahimi-Ghahnavieh et al. (2019) performed transfer learning on MRI images for precise detection of AD
various pre-trained CNNs were applied on the datasets with multi-view and single-view modes
the vectors were extracted from the MRI images by employing CNN model
and the extracted vectors were passed to the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) for image classification
The RNN faces concerns like gradient vanishing or exploding
and the computation of the neural network was too slow in image classification
training the GAN model was time consuming and computationally intensive
Zhu et al. (2021) developed a Dual Attention Multi Instance Deep Learning (DA-MIDL) model for AD and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) detection in the sMRI images
The developed DA-MIDL model had three major processes; (i) incorporate numerous spatial attention blocks in the Patch-Net model to extract discriminative vectors
(ii) perform pooling operation to balance every sMRI patch
and (iii) use a global attention aware classification model for making classification decisions
The results demonstrate that the developed DA-MIDL model achieved better classification performance by precisely identifying the pathological locations
The generalizability and classification accuracy were better than traditional methods
overfitting and lack of interpretability were the major concerns in the DA-MIDL model
Mehmood et al. (2021) performed the tissue segmentation and classification using Layer Wise Transfer Learning (LWTL) for early detection of AD
the LWTL was carried-out in the Visual Geometry Group (VGG) model for segregating Normal Controls (NC)
the VGG-16 model was employed for discriminative feature extraction
the image classification was carried out utilizing decision tree
The results indicated that the developed model had better classification accuracy
but the execution time was high on the ADNI datasets
Kang et al. (2021) presented an effective ensemble learning system based on CNN model for precise AD detection
The presented system included two phases: a majority voting was carried out in the first phase for disease prediction
ResNet50 and VGG-16 models were integrated for constructing an ensemble learning classifier
two transfer-learning strategies (task adaptation transfer and domain transfer) were utilized to manage the biomedical classification problems
The results represented that the presented ensemble learning system achieved better classification results than the single classifiers
Fan et al. (2021) implemented a U-Net model for precise classification of AD
The U-Net model was effective in both image segmentation and classification tasks
while the skip-connections in the U-Net model efficiently improved the classification performance
the skip-connections in the U-Net model were prone to overfitting problems
Liu et al. (2021) presented an effective framework for AD classification based on the CNNs
the brain images were portioned into dissimilar regions
and then the K-means clustering technique was employed for grouping the similar patches from every region
the features were learned from the grouped regions by employing the DenseNet model for image classification
excessive parameters that led to overfitting problems were processed
Naz et al. (2022) used convolutional networks with freeze-features for classifying AD, NC, and MCI in MRI scans. The presented framework had limited computational complexity and underwent fast training in relation to the conventional methods. AlSaeed and Omar (2022) utilized the ResNet50 and stacked Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models for effective AD detection
The efficacy of the presented model was compared with traditional methods by using various evaluation measures
the performance of the convolutional networks completely depends on the image quality
Alhassan (2022) initially performed image pre-processing using skull stripping
the region segmentation was carried out by integrating the Otsu thresholding method with the Enhanced Fuzzy Elephant Herding Optimization (EFEHO) algorithm
The EFEHO algorithm quickly selected the optimal threshold value in the Otsu thresholding method for precise segmentation
the DA-MIDL model was implemented for AD classification
and the model’s efficacy was analyzed in the light of specificity
the DA-MIDL model had problems such as lack of interpretability and overfitting
Rani Kaka and Prasad (2022) used region growing and adaptive histogram equalization techniques for removing the skull region and improving contrast of the MRI images
the interested regions were segmented using the fuzzy c means technique
the vectors were extracted using a local directional pattern and Gabor features
the feature selection and classification were carried-out by implementing a correlation/ensemble-based feature selection technique and a Multi-class SVM (MSVM) classifier
the MSVM classifier was inappropriate in the larger datasets when the target classes were overlapped
The suggested method has been used for solving the imbalance problems
but it was time consuming and computationally intensive
Shukla et al. (2024a) has demonstrated Structural biomarker-based AD detection via ensemble learning approaches
This work used ensemble learning and standard machine learning models to detect AD and its subtypes
The relative impact scores of the different AD cortical and subcortical areas and their subtypes were also determined
Binary and multiclass classification are the two levels used in the experimental investigation
The parahippocampal and entorhinal areas of the right hemisphere were found to be the most significant in the cortical-subcortical study
the inferior temporal and isthmus cingulate regions also had a notable impact
more study remains required to develop sustainable methods for detecting AD and its stages
Shukla et al. (2024b) analyzed a subcortical structure in AD using ensemble learning approaches
The combination of MRI and PET modalities is shown in this work
we analyzed the various subcortical structures using the Ensemble Model (EM) and further machine learning (ML) techniques to ascertain which region is more crucial for AD identification than other subtypes
The findings showed that the best regions for identifying AD
And Cognitive Normal (CN) were the hippocampal
and the amygdala in the left and right hemispheres
further data may be required to properly categorize AD and its stages
Summary of Literature review of AD classification using ADNI and AIBL dataset
deep learning models gained more attention among the researchers for AD detection
In the image segmentation and classification tasks
the majority of the deep learning models often lack interpretability
brain image data results in higher dimensional feature spaces
Effective feature extraction techniques are required to improve the performance of classification models and to avoid the curse of dimensionality problems
In order to overcome the aforementioned issues
an effective automated framework is proposed in this article for precise detection of AD in the sMRI images
The automated framework includes Otsu-TSA method
Working process of the proposed AD detection framework
Clinical and demographic information about the ADNI and AIBL dataset
Sample acquired sMRI images from ADNI and AIBL datasets
The term t and l are indicated as threshold value and histogram bins, respectively. It is essential to select the optimal threshold value for distinguishing the overlapped classes. Generally, in the conventional Otsu thresholding method, the optimal threshold value is selected by reducing the variance of the weight based on the probability of distinct groups di, and it is specified in Eq. 3
where, r,c is represented as the rows and columns in the acquired sMRI images. The elements like variance σb2t and σf2t, mean μbt and μft, and weight wbt and wft of the light and dark regions T0 and T1 in the sMRI images are determined using Eqs 4, 5
background and foreground regions are represented as b and f
The optimal threshold value is determined with low class variance σw2 in the conventional Otsu thresholding method, but it is a time-consuming process. The low-class variance σw2 is mathematically denoted in Eq. 6
TSA is incorporated with the conventional Otsu thresholding method for finding the optimal threshold value with minimal execution time
where, the random numbers are represented as c1,c2 and c3, A→ is denoted as the vectors of the agent’s new positions, F→ is stated as the water flow, and the social forces between the agents are stored in a new vector U→, which is mathematically expressed in Eq. 10
where, Omin=1 and Omax=4 are represented as the first and second subordinates, respectively, where these subordinates indicate the speed of the social interactions. In this optimization algorithm, it is essential to follow the present best agents to reach the optimal solution. Eq. 11 is used for computing the best positions of the best search agents
where, the best position is represented as Xbest, the stochastic value is denoted as rrand, which ranges between 0 to 1, and the tunicate’s position during iteration is indicated as Oox→. The term OD→ denotes the length between the optimal agent and the food origin. Further, Eq. 12 is used to bring the search agents close to the best agents
where, A is denoted as the agent’s new positions. The positions of the present agents are updated based on the positions of neighboring agents in order to model the tunicate’s swarming behaviour, as mentioned in Eq. 13
finding the optimal threshold value of the Otsu thresholding method is the objective function
The TSA method terminates after reaching the maximum iteration number
The parameters fixed in the TSA method are represented as follows: number of population is 30, maximum iteration number is 100, c1 is 0.7, c2 is 0.3, and c3 is 0.5. After the RoI segmentation, the feature extraction is carried out utilizing the LDPv and LBP descriptors. The sample segmented sMRI images are shown in Figure 3
where M and N state the size of the segmented sMRI images
3,722 and 2,982 texture vectors are extracted from the ADNI and AIBL datasets by employing a LDPv descriptor
Every layer in the DBN model is regarded as a logistic regression model
The performance of the proposed Otsu-TSA method and DBN model are analyzed using MATLAB R2022a software
The proposed framework is simulated on a system with 128GB RAM
The Otsu-TSA method’s efficacy is investigated based on three different performance measures: JSC
the DBN’s effectiveness is validated on the basis of 4 performance measures
and sensitivity on the ADNI and AIBL datasets
the performance of the proposed segmentation method (Otsu-TSA) is compared with other segmentation methods like: region growing
and PA on both ADNI and AIBL datasets which is clearly described in the following subsections
Achieved results of the Otsu-TSA method and the comparative segmentation methods
Visual evaluation of the Otsu-TSA method and the comparative segmentation methods
The effectiveness of the DBN model is validated by comparing its results with other classification models (Autoencoder
and DenseNet) on the ADNI and AIBL datasets
These five comparative models are also executed on the same environment and system configuration
The parameter settings of the comparative models for AD detection are presented as follows
the parameters considered in the autoencoder model are as follows: learning rate is 0.001
The common parameters assumed in the LSTM and GRU models are presented the following: cost function is cross entropy
activation functions are sigmoid and tangent
the common parameters considered in the AlexNet and DenseNet models are set as follows: epochs are 100
the DBN is able to handle more feature vectors than the comparative classification models
Due to its usage and robustness of the hidden layers
the DBN assembles useful correlations of the feature vectors to achieve better image classification
Achieved results of the DBN model and the comparative classification models on the ADNI dataset
Achieved results of the DBN model and the existing classification models on the AIBL dataset
Visual evaluation of the DBN and the comparative classification models results on the ADNI dataset
Correspondingly, in the AIBL dataset, the DBN model achieves supreme classification results with 99.82% of specificity, 99.92% of classification accuracy, and 99.78% of sensitivity, as mentioned in Table 5. Figure 8 is the visual evaluation of DBN and the comparative classification models’ results on the AIBL dataset
Visual evaluation of the DBN and the comparative classification models results on the AIBL dataset
the experiment was conducted for 1662 ADNI sMRI images
The benefits of proposing the Otsu-TSA method and the DBN model in AD detection are briefly detailed in the discussion section
and it also shows the effectiveness of incorporating TSA in the Otsu thresholding method
Execution time of different classification models on the ADNI and AIBL datasets
an effective AD detection framework was proposed based on the Otsu-TSA method and DBN model
The proposed AD detection framework included three steps: RoI segmentation using the Otsu-TSA method
extraction of vectors using hybrid descriptors (LDPv and LBP) and image classification by the DBN model
The performance of the proposed segmentation method (Otsu-TSA) and classification model (DBN) were analyzed on 1662 ADNI subjects with 3 classes and 496 AIBL subjects with 4 classes
and sensitivity were used for evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed segmentation method and classification model
the proposed Otsu-TSA method achieved higher PA of 0.94 and 0.95 on the ADNI and AIBL datasets
the classification model DBN obtained maximum accuracy of 99.80% and 99.92% on the ADNI and AIBL datasets
which is superior to the conventional detection models like autoencoder
The results demonstrated that the proposed framework not only achieved better diagnosis performance
but also precisely identified the discriminative pathological locations in the sMRI images than the comparative systems
The selection of optimal threshold value in the Otsu thresholding method by TSA reduced the execution time of the proposed framework to 48.58 and 36.38 s on the ADNI and AIBL datasets
the integration of an optimization algorithm in the segmentation method increases the computational complexity that needs to be overcome in the future
a novel unsupervised model can be developed with a grid search hyper-parameter optimization method for diminishing the computational complexity
and can be applied in other diseases like lung cancer and breast cancer detection
The datasets generated during and/or analysed during the current study are available in the ADNI and AIBL datasets repository, https://adni.loni.usc.edu/data-samples/access-data/ and https://aibl.csiro.au/adni/index.html

Japan's Hokkaido coast is graced by a rare natural phenomenon called "jewelery ice"
The weather is never in short supply of feeling romantic with Japan's jewelery ice
It is created along the country's Hokkaido coast and forms as ice from the Tokachi River breaks apart at the river's mouth and gets washed up on the beach
Sand and waves together polish the ice to become extremely smooth and shiny
The phenomenon occurs only on Otsu Beach in Hokkaido
the temperature of the Tokachi River can drop below -4°F
This gives the ice a high transparency with no impurities
the angle of the sun bathes the ice rounds in different colors; in an orange glow at first light

Dumplings are making their way to the restaurant spot adjacent to The Mill & Mine just north of the Old City
The former Tako Taco location on Depot Avenue will soon serve Asian-style dumplings in a new restaurant called Otsu!
Otsu is an abbreviation for "Otsukaresama," a Japanese greeting that translates to either "thank you for your hard work" or "you did a great job." It's a nod that ties directly into a service mindset at the restaurant.
"We want guests to come in and we want to treat them," partner and chef Jesse Newmister said. "We want to create an area where people can reward them themselves and help people reward themselves."
When will Otsu! be open in downtown Knoxville? The opening date is somewhat up in the air, but Newmister said the goal is mid- to late-September after a handful of soft openings.
The restaurant will be start out serving dinner only Wednesday through Saturday.
The restaurant will serve dumplings, as well as curated Japanese-style cocktails and small plates. Newmister is still working out the details but said there will be five or six culturally traditional core dumplings and a couple from Thailand that even foodies might not know.
Otsu! will have Japanese-style charcoal grills for skewers, pork belly and other dishes. Vegetarian and vegan dishes also are in the works, and most dishes will cost $8 to $12.
The Otsu! connection to The Mill & Mine music venueNewmister and his wife, Margaret Stolfi, are partners in the business. Stolfi also serves as general manager of The Mill & Mine and helped oversee Tako Taco prior to closing.
When Tako Taco closed last year, the couple knew that they would be the ones to open the next restaurant instead of leasing out the space. Tako Taco already had a well-trained staff, and Otsu! will have familiar faces.
Stolfi played a large role in developing the aesthetic and handling finances, while Newmister will focus on food preparation.
The inside of the venue and the outside patio are undergoing a renovation.

In low-resolution remote sensing images under complex lighting conditions
there is a similarity in spectral characteristics between non-landslide areas and landslide bodies
which increases the probability of misjudgment in the identification process of shallow landslide bodies
In order to further improve the accuracy of landslide identification
a shallow landslide remote sensing identification method based on an improved Otsu algorithm and multi-feature threshold is proposed for the temporary treatment project of the Yangjunba disaster site in Leshan City
remote sensing images are enhanced with local linear models and guided filtering; then
multi-feature scales and sliding window calculations of opening and closing transformations identify potential landslide areas
which are finally segmented using the Otsu algorithm
the method proposed in this article can clearly segment the target object and background after binary segmentation of remote sensing images
The recognition rate of shallow landslide bodies is not less than 95%
indicating that the method proposed in this article is relatively accurate in identifying shallow landslide bodies in the research area and has good application effects
Through the interpretation of remote sensing images
rapid identification and dynamic monitoring of landslide bodies can be achieved
involving the accuracy of landslide disaster identification and monitoring efficiency and providing strong technical support for geological disaster prevention and control
In the face of increasingly severe environmental changes and geological disasters
it is particularly important to study remote sensing identification methods for shallow landslide bodies
Jiang W et al. (2023) proposed a landslide disaster remote sensing image recognition method based on AED Net (Attention combined with Encoder De der Network)
Optimizing the multi-scale feature extraction capability of deep neural networks using shallow feature extraction networks and combining the feature restoration ability of the encoder-decoder structure to restore the boundary information of landslide disaster remote sensing images
an AED Net model is constructed to complete landslide disaster identification
This method does not consider the close spectral characteristics between non-landslide areas and landslide bodies
significantly increasing the probability of misjudgment in identifying landslide bodies under background interference
or the remote sensing image resolution is low
DETR may have difficulty accurately segmenting the shallow landslide mass from the background
landslide monitoring often faces complex and variable environmental conditions
These factors may lead to a decrease in image quality
thereby affecting the accuracy of recognition and monitoring
Zheng et al. (2024) used LiDAR data to extract geomorphic features and analyzed the deformation characteristics of landslide locations using InSAR technology. The deformation rate and range were determined through time-series deformation information, and the landslide boundary was identified using unmanned aerial vehicle radar (Wei et al., 2024)
The principle of geometric distortion was used to correct remote sensing images
achieving real-time monitoring of landslide deformation
using only geometric distortion correction as a method is difficult to effectively enhance the clarity of remote sensing images
which affects the subsequent recognition of shallow landslide targets that are difficult to detect
In response to the problem that existing research methods are difficult to accurately identify small shallow landslide bodies in low-resolution remote sensing images under complex lighting environments, this paper proposes a shallow landslide body remote sensing identification method based on the improved Otsu algorithm and multi-feature threshold 1 (He et al., 2024a)
Innovatively combining Retinex enhancement and guided filtering methods to enhance the clarity of remote sensing images in complex lighting scenarios
Due to the complex terrain information contained in remote sensing images
in order to segment small shallow landslide targets in complex backgrounds and distinguish various spectral features between non-landslide areas and landslide bodies
this paper uses multiple feature thresholds to remove invalid or redundant background features
thereby improving the accuracy of image segmentation
The traditional Otsu algorithm can perform image segmentation by automatically selecting a threshold in image processing
it is easy to ignore the spatial relationship of pixels and reduce the segmentation effect
this paper innovatively uses the Monte Carlo iteration strategy to improve it
optimize the flexibility and applicability of landslide remote sensing identification
and improve the accuracy and efficiency of identification
and large-scale collapse and damage are possible
it is necessary to conduct remote sensing image recognition of shallow landslide bodies in this area to identify the geological hazard characteristics of the landslide
which is representative of the experimental target
In response to the on-site landslide case, five wide-swath panchromatic remote sensing images were captured using the Gaofen-1 satellite, and landslide recognition experiments were conducted based on the image data. The remote sensing image of the research area is shown in Figure 2
Location of the study area and the general situation of the landslide
Figure 4 shows the shallow landslide remote sensing identification process based on the improved Otsu algorithm and multi-feature threshold studied in this article
Remote sensing image segmentation and recognition process
According to the process shown in Figure 4
the remote sensing image is enhanced and smoothed based on the Retinex theory and the local linear model
multi-scale feature values of the remote sensing image background and landslide targets are extracted
the Otsu algorithm is used to segment the remote-sensing images of landslide bodies
Improve the binary threshold processing of the Otsu algorithm
use the optimal threshold to segment the image into foreground and background
and achieve remote sensing recognition of shallow landslide bodies
Remote sensing images may be affected by various factors, such as atmospheric disturbances, cloud cover, sensor noise, etc., during transmission and acquisition (Tao et al., 2022). Therefore, the accuracy of recognition can be improved by enhancing remote-sensing images (Lin et al., 2023). However, using a single enhancement method alone may not achieve the desired effect (Ye et al., 2024)
this article innovatively combines the Retinex enhancement and guided filtering methods to adapt to this complex lighting scene
improving the processing effect and practicality of remote sensing images
this article combines the Retinex enhancement algorithm and guided filtering algorithm to preprocess remote sensing images
The Retinex enhancement method can effectively handle the quality loss caused by uneven lighting on shallow landslide remote sensing images
and enhance the clarity of remote sensing images
shallow landslide remote sensing images can be represented as:
Si,j represents the original shallow landslide remote sensing image; i,j represents the pixel points of shallow landslide remote sensing images; Li,j and Ri,j represent the illumination component and reflection component
These factors will affect the reflection characteristics of the landslide body to light
affect the characteristics of the landslide body in remote sensing images
Multi-Scale Retinex (MSR) can adjust the contrast and brightness of an image while preserving its detailed information
In order to highlight the characteristics of the landslide body and improve the readability of the image
it is necessary to process the illumination Li,j by removing or reducing the influence of the illumination component
thereby highlighting the reflection component that reflects the surface characteristics of the object
* is the convolution operation; G stands for Gaussian filter scale
u represents Gaussian filter; σ stands for Gaussian kernel
After filtering through multiple Gaussian kernels
the reflection components at this scale can be extracted to enhance the color and detail of shallow landslide remote sensing images and obtain Retinex-enhanced remote sensing images Ii,j
Wm represents the fusion weight in the m-th number field
the edges of low-resolution remote sensing images in complex lighting scenes are prone to blurring
To further enhance the edge details of shallow landslide remote sensing images
a local linear model guided by filtering is used to apply smoothing filtering to the obtained enhanced remote sensing image Ii,j
qi represents the output image of the guided filtering algorithm after filtering pixel i in remote sensing image Ii,j; ah and bh represent the linear coefficients of remote sensing images during filtering processing; h represents the window used in the smoothing filtering process; Ci represents the radius of the window for pixel i during the smoothing filtering process
substitute remote sensing image Ii,j and apply the minimum cost function to constrain its implementation
pi represents the number of pixels; ε stands for regularization parameter
the remote sensing images under guided filtering are smoothed to obtain the smoothed shallow landslide remote sensing image Ji,j
u represents the number of iterations of the local linear model smoothing filtering process; ph stands for pixel mean
Based on Formulas 1–7
complete remote sensing image preprocessing using the Retinex enhancement algorithm and guided filtering algorithm
providing clear image data for subsequent landslide identification
Remote sensing images typically contain complex terrain information, such as water bodies, vegetation, buildings, etc., which exhibit different features in the image, such as color, texture, shape, etc. Multi-feature thresholds can be used to screen for features that have a significant impact on the segmentation results of the target, removing invalid or redundant features (Deng et al., 2024; Senogles et al., 2023)
By setting reasonable threshold conditions
the most representative subset of landslide target features can be selected to more finely distinguish between these terrain backgrounds and landslide targets
The process of extracting morphological features from remote sensing images
the green box represents the ABC window range
and the gray block refers to the target area
The annotated sliding window is considered a key structural unit for landslide identification
and C represent three typical situations that the window may encounter when scanning landslide remote sensing images
Window A simulates an idealized scenario where the feature values (such as spectral reflectance
etc.) of all pixels within the window are almost equal
This is rare in actual landslide recognition and may indicate uniform regions or specific backgrounds in the image
Window B reflects a more common situation in landslide identification
where at least one pixel in the area covered by the window has a feature value that is not equal to other points
This difference may be caused by changes in geological features at the edge of the landslide body
which are crucial for identifying the morphology
Window C describes an extreme situation where all expected pixel feature values within the window are significantly different from those outside the window boundary
This situation may indicate a strong contrast between the landslide body and the surrounding environment
such as the contrast between the exposed rocks of the landslide body and the dense vegetation around it
which is of great significance for quickly locating the location of the landslide body
the situation of window C is relatively rare and requires careful handling to avoid misjudgment
The transformation function for opening and closing the above window is as follows:
sf1 represents the transformation function under the window opening operation; sf0 represents the transformation function under window closure operation; s stands for sliding window; f represents the area covered by the window; The ⊕ symbol represents the characteristic changes of expansion; ⊙ represents the characteristic changes of corrosion
the selection and definition of attributes are highly flexible and can be customized according to the specific characteristics and recognition needs of the landslide mass
For a given detection area and threshold conditions
due to the complexity and diversity of landslide bodies
direct feature mapping in low-dimensional space often fails to fully reflect their characteristics
this article extends the low dimensional spatial attribute features in the high-dimensional feature space to capture more subtle information that is helpful for landslide identification:
E represents the attribute characteristic values of the potential coverage area of the landslide mass; T stands for attribute set; A1 ∼ An represents feature value ranking; P1 ∼ Pm represents attribute feature categories
Formulas 8, 9 can be used to extract features from landslide remote-sensing images based on multiple feature thresholds
The extracted features can be used to segment the background and identify landslide targets
In the field of image processing and remote sensing recognition, the Otsu algorithm is widely used for its ability to automatically select the optimal threshold for image segmentation, which can effectively distinguish landslide bodies (i.e., target foreground) from the surrounding environment (i.e., background) (Neogi et al., 2024)
after completing the feature extraction of landslide remote sensing images based on multiple feature thresholds
the Otsu algorithm was selected to segment the landslide remote sensing images
the traditional Otsu algorithm needs to traverse all possible gray levels and calculate their corresponding inter-class variances when searching for the optimal threshold
This process requires a huge amount of computation when processing high-resolution or large data images
resulting in low algorithm efficiency and difficulty meeting real-time requirements
this article innovatively uses the Monte Carlo iterative method to optimize the remote sensing identification effect of landslide bodies
the results of the Monte Carlo method will become closer to the true solution
The proportion η1 and gray value mean μ1 of landslide target pixels in landslide remote sensing images are as follows (Equation 11):
The calculation formula for the average grayscale value μ of landslide remote sensing images is as follows (Equation 12):
Based on the above block processing and binary recognition results
combined with the fusion technology of panchromatic images and terrain data
the accuracy and comprehensiveness of landslide identification can be further improved
Full-color images provide rich texture and detail information
which helps to more accurately depict the morphology and boundaries of landslide bodies
Terrain data (such as DEM) provides key information about surface morphology
which are crucial for understanding the causes
The specific operational approach is as follows:
(1) Based on the ratio of the number of morphological features sf1Ji,j and attribute features E extracted from the remote sensing image in Section 2.2
the size of the Monte Carlo random block of the remote sensing image is set to H×W
and the Monte Carlo calculation steps are N steps
Monte Carlo random block is performed according to this setting
(2) Using Monte Carlo to perform Otsu binary thresholding on remote sensing images. Determine the optimal threshold d through inter class variance, so that the image can be divided into foreground (target object, i.e., landslide) and background parts based on this threshold. The inter class variance θ2 between D0 and D1 can be obtained as follows (Equation 13):
The inter class variance θ2 can be used to determine the optimal threshold of the Otsu algorithm
When the θ2 takes its maximum value
the difference between D0 and D1 is the largest
and the corresponding gray value threshold d of the landslide remote sensing image is the optimal threshold
(3) Monte Carlo iteration itself is based on random sampling and does not directly correspond to a mathematical formula. But the sampling process can be based on a random number generation algorithm to calculate the binary probability distribution Pi,j as follows (Equation 14):
Ok represents obtaining the binary segmentation result for each pixel
(4) Set the confidence level TP as the probability threshold
with a value greater than TP used as the foreground for landslide remote sensing image segmentation (target object
and a value less than TP used as the background clutter for segmentation
Assuming that in Monte Carlo iterative calculation
a pixel is identified as a target foreground above this probability threshold
then this pixel is identified as a shallow landslide mass in the final result
achieving remote sensing recognition of shallow landslide mass
The above data and DEM model require the construction of an experimental platform environment before they can be applied
Set the experimental environment as follows: Hardware environment: Intel Core Ultra 9 285K processor
10 TB Seagate ST10000NM017B mechanical hard drive
Software environment used: Windows 11 operating system
TensorFlow model training and learning framework
Based on the above experimental environment
input the DEM model and data into the Revit2020 database for experimental testing
a 64 × 64 pixel local window was set
and 100 local window images of landslide areas and surface types affected by geological disasters were selected for analysis
(a) Comparison of local window entropy and grayscale mean
(b) Comparison of local window standard deviation and grayscale mean
(A) Comparison of local window entropy and grayscale mean (B) Comparison of local window standard deviation and grayscale mean
Figure 6 shows that the one-dimensional entropy, grayscale mean, and standard deviation values of normal ground types in non-landslide areas are lower. In contrast, the local characteristics of ground types in landslide areas exhibit higher numerical distributions. Based on the observation of Figure 6
the following thresholds can be set: the threshold for one-dimensional entropy is 4.2
and the threshold for grayscale standard deviation is 20
When the eigenvalues of a local window are all less than or equal to these three thresholds
the window is classified as a normal ground type
The binary segmentation effect of remote sensing images and the accuracy of landslide recognition will be used as experimental indicators to verify the effectiveness of different methods
In this study, binary segmentation was performed on the target object (landslide) and background in remote sensing images. Therefore, the binary segmentation effect of different methods on remote sensing images in complex lighting environments with environmental noise interference is shown in Figure 7
(b) High resolution remote sensing image recognition method based on DETR
(c) Methods based on image recognition technology and computer vision technology
(A) Proposed method (B) High-resolution sensing image recognition method based on DETR (C) Methods based on image recognition technology and computer vision technology
Figure 7 shows that although all three methods can segment the target object from the background
there is still a significant gap in the binary segmentation effect of different methods in terms of details
the high-resolution remote sensing image landslide body recognition method based on DETR can effectively segment ordinary ground and landslide bodies
some areas containing vegetation have missing details
which may reduce the accuracy of shallow landslide body recognition
After binary segmentation of remote sensing images based on image recognition technology and computer vision recognition methods
making it difficult to accurately segment the target object and background
which is not conducive to shallow landslide recognition
the shallow landslide remote sensing recognition method based on the improved Otsu algorithm and multi-feature threshold proposed in this article can clearly segment the target object and background in complex lighting environments after binary segmentation of remote sensing images
with clear edges and good binary segmentation effect
which can effectively improve the accuracy of shallow landslide remote sensing recognition
Identification rates of shallow landslide bodies using different methods
Figure 8 shows that as the number of monitoring points increases
the identification rate of shallow landslide bodies using different methods shows a decreasing trend
the recognition rate of landslide bodies based on the DETR high-resolution remote sensing image recognition method decreased from 96% to 87%
with a decrease of 9 percentage points; The recognition rate based on image recognition technology and computer vision technology has decreased from 95% to 86%
The shallow landslide remote sensing recognition method based on the improved Otsu algorithm and multi-feature threshold proposed in this article has reduced the recognition rate of shallow landslides in the study area from 99% to 95%
with a decrease of only 4 percentage points and a recognition rate of not less than 95%
This indicates that the method proposed in this article is more accurate in identifying shallow landslides in the study area and has good application effects
This article proposes a shallow landslide remote sensing identification method based on the improved Otsu algorithm and multi-feature threshold
By conducting detailed analysis and processing of remote sensing images
the traditional Otsu algorithm has been optimized
and a multi-feature threshold strategy has been introduced to improve the accuracy and reliability of landslide identification
The experimental results show that this method can effectively distinguish landslide bodies from complex backgrounds in complex remote sensing images
accurately identify shallow landslide bodies
and provide strong technical support for early warning and prevention of geological disasters
With the continuous advancement of remote sensing technology and the increasing richness of data sources
there is still room for further optimization of research methods
such as combining higher-resolution image data or introducing machine learning algorithms to improve recognition performance
Future research will focus on these directions to achieve higher recognition accuracy and provide more comprehensive and in-depth solutions for monitoring and managing landslide disasters

Next1/2Image: Ubisoft Quebec/Ubisoft via PolygonYour first step in finding Merchant Kanta is to find a missing ship. It was in Omi’s Lake Biwa (the giant lake that is basically all of Omi) and should’ve passed by Okishima — the cat island right in the middle of the lake
Head over to the west side of the island a little south of the bay
Clear out the pirates and loot the Shipping Manifest
Next1/2Image: Ubisoft Quebec/Ubisoft via PolygonNext
It’s at the southern end of the lake on the west side
just a little north of the Mouth of Seta and the Seta Bridge
You’re looking for the Rice Shipyard about halfway through town
This is another tough one if you’re trying to avoid (most) bloodshed
Work your way around and take out the various guards (Imai Sokun didn’t say anything about them)
Wait until you get Merchant Kanta isolated
You’ll get the Critical Chance under Half Health engraving
Next1/2Image: Ubisoft Quebec/Ubisoft via PolygonWith the merchants all addressed
you have all the information you need to take on The Iron Hand himself
You’ll find him in central Tamba in Fukuchiyama
If he’s not in the warehouses in the middle
you’ll find him in the garden to the southeast
You don’t have to worry about subtlety anymore
so you can go as loud as you want to take out The Iron Hand
You do have to deal with the small crowd of baddies that surround him
so it’s possible to take him out with a kunai or an arrow without getting your hands dirty
the Bloody Business long katana and the Damage with Poisoning engraving
All that’s left is to head back to Imai Sokun in Sakai to get your reward of the Fujin’s Tempest trinket, the Damage for Alerted Provinces engraving, and a piece of gold (that you can use in place of upgrade materials and mon at the Forge)
Japanese version
Naoe has a fresh challenge: sparing the targets instead of assassinating them
After ridding the city of Sakai from the evil influence of the nefarious group who killed her father in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Naoe’s association with the Imai family isn’t over yet
When she finds an incriminating letter in the Money Changer District (or any other bandit-controlled hostile area in Settsu)
it seems as if the Imais are trying to step into the void left by Nobunaga under the guise of the Iron Hand
Naoe learns that the Iron Hand Guild are imposters trying to use the Imai to gain influence
before Sokun asks her to interrogate merchants around Japan for information
This gives you a slate of new targets ranging from the teens to level 35
Imai Sokun asks you to spare the merchants you interrogate
as they’re likely caught up in shady business they don’t fully understand
or have at least had the wool pulled over their eyes as to who they’re dealing with
When Assassin’s Creed Shadows is so geared around combat
taking the non-leathal approach can be difficult and not very intuitive - even though it’s the right thing to do in this instance
Here’s not only where to find the Iron Hand Guild targets
While you’ve been asked to spare the merchants caught up with the Iron Hand Guild
Even if you unequip your weapons and defeat them with your fists
the target menu will still mark them as “killed”
sneak up behind them and press Triangle (or your controller’s equivalent) to “grab” them
before they have time to break free of your grab
hold Triangle again to perform a “knock out”
This is the only non-leathal solution which is properly registered by the target objectives menu
Below we've embedded an interactive map showing the location of every Iron Hand Guild merchant in Assassin's Creed Shadows:
we'll go into more detail about where to find each merchant and their unique quest
where you’re given the following clues:
Honpoji temple is a white diamond in the middle of Kyoto
Immediately to the west (left on the map) you see some of Tamao’s workers lamenting their boss’s absence and that he’s locked himself in a warehouse
Naoe suggests destroying some of his stock
The shining blue markers all around the yard indicate the stock to destroy
Crash around in the barrels and he’ll burst out
you immediately kill him - which isn’t your intention
you can’t even knock them out with your fists
You need to sneak up behind him and press Triangle to grab
then hold triangle to “knock out” - this is the only non-leathal solution
make sure you run away before he spots you outside the warehouse or lose him when he does
you must first find and inspect his missing ship
of which you're given the following clues:
On the southwestern edge of the island of Okishima
Approach stealthily and defeat the pirates
then loot the shipping manifest from the broken boat next to the overturned ship
This gives you the clue that while Kanta sails the length and breadth of Lake Biwa
Otsu is on the southern shore of Lake Biwa
next to where it says the “Mouth of Seta”
Go to Otsu and you find Kanta inside his house in the Upper District
Simply sneak in quietly and loot the letter from his desk which tells you the Iron Hand is in Tamba
With that you can slip out and the merchant is spared an untimely end
in Wakasa to gain more intelligence on where to find the merchant
northeast of where it says Onyu Pass on the map
and on the river bank you find a bandit camp nestled amongst the undergrowth
Defeat the assembled baddies and search the camp for clues
On the writing desk you find a letter instructing the bandits to cart their spoils to the town of Obama
between Kara Market and the Trading Port you find the Merchant Kin-no-suke
as you approach Naoe will remark that the incriminating letter sets this merchant out as as cruel and uncompromising as the Iron Hand themself
Take the subtle approach and speak to Kin-no-suke non-violently first
Give him the letter and he’ll assume you’re in league with the bandits
This will make him leave his post and walk to a more secluded location where you can talk freely
You can still spare him though if you wish (the quest log says Imai Sokun will find him useful in dealing with shady characters) and just take the letter from the storeroom you find yourself next to
This tells you that the Iron Hand is not adverse to using tea ceremony as a means of influence
Merchant Ginroku is found in the province of Tamba
which is in the top left-hand corner of the area
The bridges are just to the southwest of Miyazu Castle and Ginroku’s shop is between them
so you’re free to wander up to the merchant
then hold Triangle to knock him out for the info
it's by far the easiest task you've had so far
you finally have the information you need: the Iron Hand has made his base in Fukuchiyama Castle
just to the southeast of the final merchant in Miyazu Bay
if you stick to stealth and avoid a fight with the guards
you can take out the Iron Hand while still being lower than his level
Infiltrate Fukuchiyama Castle and you find the Iron Hand in the southeast corner of the middle castle
standing alone mulling some nefarious business
With some careful climbing to avoid guards
you can position yourself above them for an easy assassination
you receive the Bloody Business Katana and the damage with Poison engraving
Return to Imai in Sakai and tell him of your success
the Damage for Alerted Provinces engraving and the Fujin’s Tempest Trinket which gives you a 10% damage boost for every province you’re wanted in during a season
Until then there are plenty of other early game targets to track down including the Kabukimono, Twisted Tree and Origami Butterflies.

you have to find Shotei in Assassin's Creed Shadows
The clues tell you that he went east from Seta Bridge and that he's somewhere in the center of the Shimmering Fields
It just so happens that the only point of interest there
hold the aim button and look for a blue glow inside one of the larger houses
you have to take out the samurai captain nearby
wandered off to the west in search of vengeance
Open the world map and make your way to the Mount Hiei fast travel point so you can tag the location
look a bit to the south to spot Enryakuji Temple
Eliminate the four hostiles that she's sniping so you can speak with her
it's time to head to Sakamoto to meet up with Shotei once more
Note that Shotei can be found next to a wooden tower overlooking the village--he's not inside the village or the castle itself

A fishing boat capsized off the coast of Kashima Port in Ibaraki Prefecture early Monday morning
according to the Japan Coast Guard's Ibaraki office
8 belonging to JF Otsu — a fisheries cooperative in the city of Kitaibaraki
Ibaraki Prefecture — was carrying 20 crew members
including 15 Japanese citizens and five Indonesian nationals.googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); });
Seventeen members have been accounted for but two of them — Japanese men in their 50s and 60s — were confirmed dead
a nearby fishing vessel reported that a purse seiner had overturned about 31 kilometers east of Kashima Port
One of the crew members who had been rescued reportedly said the vessel tilted gradually after a large amount of fish was caught in a net
The Transport Safety Board has assigned three marine accident investigators to look into the accident
are believed to have been thrown overboard during the incident
Rescue efforts involving four patrol vessels and a helicopter are ongoing
The ship had been fishing for sardines in the area alongside two other vessels since midday Sunday
Several other boats in the area also joined the search for the missing crew
with clear skies and wave heights of 0.5 meters
NHK also reported that crew members from nearby vessels described the sea as unusually tranquil
noting that the conditions were not typical for a capsizing

National Report
Nearly 10 percent of volunteer parole and probation officers feel anxiety
citing the use of their homes to interview offenders and persistent safety concerns expressed by friends and relatives
the ministry plans to assign more than one volunteer officer to each individual in certain cases and instruct ministry-hired professional officers to play more direct roles in supervising those on probation and parole
The national survey was conducted after the shocking killing of a volunteer officer in May in Otsu
was found dead with numerous stab wounds at his home
the volunteer officer was scheduled to meet a convicted thief who was on probation
The offender was later arrested in connection with the murder
10 volunteer officers resigned and 16 citizens withdrew their applications in the middle of the appointment procedures
according to the ministry’s survey published on July 26
The ministry directly hires parole and probation officers who have professional expertise and experience
But it also depends on large numbers of volunteers at the community level who perform similar roles for free to rehabilitate and reintegrate offenders into society
the ministry’s parole and probation officers interviewed 16,184 volunteer officers across the nation and found that 1,480 felt unease about their tasks
They included: 480 with anxiety over using their homes to interview offenders; 444 concerned about the opinions of their families and people around them concerning their activities; and 278 who cited supervising an offender with a history of violence
the ministry directed its probation offices to take measures to help the volunteers
Professional officers will directly handle more cases
and the probation offices will ask volunteers if they wish to work together with another volunteer in dealing with an offender
The ministry will also request local governments to make their public facilities available for meetings between volunteer officers and those under supervision
Interviews with those on parole or probation at volunteer officers’ homes are quite common
73.4 percent of volunteers said they use their homes to meet individuals they supervise
Inviting relatives of would-be volunteer officers to briefings about their expected activities could help gain family members’ understanding
The ministry will also bolster efforts to assess safety risks posed by the offenders
volunteers were assigned to probationers soon after their verdicts
allowing little time for the officers to become familiar with the background of the offenders and their crimes
professional officers will get directly involved with probationers at the beginning
rather than leave them to volunteers for the entire time
The Justice Ministry’s survey also found concerns that the Otsu incident could fuel perceptions that probationers and parolees are dangerous
Others feared the killing could scare off potential volunteer officers at a time when the government needs more of them
Around 47,000 people serve as volunteer officers nationwide
but the figure has fallen short of the government target
Volunteers are supposed to be exemplary citizens in their communities
but they are not necessarily required to possess expertise or other credentials in the criminal justice system
Man already on parole held in May slaying of volunteer officer

Award-winning author Mina Miyajima is “taking over” Japan from Otsu
where she lives and where her books are set
won the 2024 Honya Taisho (Booksellers’ Award) for her debut book “Naruse wa Tenka o Tori ni Iku” (Naruse goes to take over the world)
The prize is awarded to the book that booksellers would like to sell the most
is a collection of short stories about an adolescent girl named Akari Naruse
Naruse wears a Saitama Seibu Lions uniform on the cover of the book
not because she is a fan of the professional baseball team
“Arigato Seibu Otsu-ten” (Thank you Seibu Otsu branch)
she visits the Otsu branch of the Seibu department store every day until the store closes for good while wearing the uniform as a sign of her appreciation
In the story “Zeze kara Kimashita” (We’re from Zeze)
while in “Let’s Go Michigan,” Naruse guides visitors from outside the prefecture on the sightseeing boat Michigan on Lake Biwa
in the sequel story collection “Naruse wa Shinjita Michi o Iku” (Naruse goes the way she believes)
is appointed Lake Biwa Otsu Tourism Ambassador to promote the city of Otsu
described her thoughts on writing and where she lives
glides leisurely over the lake’s endless blue surface
wearing a shirt that resembles a baseball uniform and a sash over her shoulder with “Lake Biwa Otsu Tourism Ambassador” written on it
Both the uniform and the sash are worn by Naruse in the book
Miyajima struck a perfect Naruse-like pose
“[Are you wearing them] to show your love for Otsu?” she replied with a playful smile
“I am writing about Otsu because I happen to live here
just as Kotaro Isaka’s novels are set in Sendai,” she said
Naruse’s adolescence as a junior and senior high school student is humorously depicted
She appears every day in the background of a live TV broadcast in front of the Seibu department store
She teams up with a childhood friend to compete in the M-1 Grand Prix contest for manzai comedy groups
She also experiments with measuring the growth of her hair by completely shaving her head
Although she excels academically and athletically
her somewhat unusual words and actions shake the entrenched ideas of those around her
Miyajima said she does not think Naruse is special
“I feel like I’m letting her act freely,” she said
“I write about her as if she were my child and I were preparing regular meals
so I think it is my job as a writer to convey Naruse’s free way of life.”
Words such as “mask” and “social distance” are interspersed throughout the stories
indicating that Naruse is living through the COVID-19 pandemic
Amid strict restrictions on people’s behavior
readers may have been dazzled by her attitude of doing everything to the best of her ability
“I think there are many who wanted to be someone like Naruse but couldn’t
some probably couldn’t do what they wanted because they worried about what people around them would think
Maybe that’s why Naruse was embraced by many readers,” she said
Naruse is not the only one who accomplishes what she has set out to do
first decided to write a story when she was a third-grade elementary school student
A review she received in a book report contest inspired her to write
I recommend you write a story.’ I still remember thinking
She wrote stories in notebooks and had her classmates read them
she gave up her dream of becoming an author during her mid-20s before her talent could bloom
she worked from home while raising her child
It was only in 2017 that she started writing fictional stories again
She said she was motivated to write after reading Tomihiko Morimi’s novel “Yako” (Night train)
and I might be a novelist in the other universe
maybe I could meet the version of myself in that universe,” she said
She began applying for the R-18 Bungakusho
a literary prize for works written by women for women
which has been awarded to authors such as Misumi Kubo and Toriko Yoshikawa
she won the grand prize in 2021 for “Arigato Seibu Otsu-ten.” In March 2023
she made her debut as an author with the publication of “Naruse wa Tenka o Tori ni Iku,” which included the award-winning story
Miyajima’s debut book has now sold more than 500,000 copies and is a bestseller
She says she is “sometimes terrified for a moment” by the sudden success
and it makes me wonder if this will ever happen again,” she said
“Naruse wa Shinjita Michi o Iku,” was published in January
Although it is interesting to see how the character will further develop
Miyajima is determined to write a third volume of the series and then take a break from it
“I actually love romance novels with messy and toxic situations
I definitely want to write in other genres
She usually spends her mornings writing at her home in Otsu and her afternoons replying to e-mails and responding to interviews
She works while her daughter attends elementary school
“Naruse would probably call winning the Honya Taisho award a ‘passing phase,’” she said
aiming to “take over the world” in her own way

We present an innovative method for rapidly segmenting haematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained tissue in whole-slide images (WSIs) that eliminates a wide range of undesirable artefacts such as pen marks and scanning artefacts
Our method involves taking a single-channel representation of a low-magnification RGB overview of the WSI in which the pixel values are bimodally distributed such that H&E-stained tissue is easily distinguished from both background and a wide variety of artefacts
We demonstrate our method on 30 WSIs prepared from a wide range of institutions and WSI digital scanners
and compare it to segmentations provided by Otsu thresholding and Histolab tissue segmentation and pen filtering tools
We found that our method segmented the tissue and fully removed all artefacts in 29 out of 30 WSIs
whereas Otsu thresholding failed to remove any artefacts
and the Histolab pen filtering tools only partially removed the pen marks
The beauty of our approach lies in its simplicity: manipulating RGB colour space and using Otsu thresholding allows for the segmentation of H&E-stained tissue and the rapid removal of artefacts without the need for machine learning or parameter tuning
(a) A WSI of a H&E-stained biopsy containing only minor
(b) The tissue segmentation provided by applying Otsu thresholding to the luminance of the WSI
The clear distinction between the intensities of the tissue and the rest of the WSI caused the Otsu threshold to lie between the maximum intensity of the tissue and the minimum intensity of background
allowing for a successful tissue segmentation
(c) A WSI of an H&E-stained biopsy containing orange pen marks splitting the tissue of different levels and used to identify three features of interest
(d) The tissue segmentation provided by applying Otsu thresholding to the luminance of the WSI
The pen marks interfered with the Otsu threshold calculation
resulting in a tissue segmentation that contains tissue and pen marks
we propose a new tissue segmenting algorithm for H&E-stained tissue which can segment tissue in the presence of artefacts
We tested our method on WSIs of H&E-stained duodenal biopsies prepared at multiple different institutions
and containing a large range of artefacts of different types
Our method improves on Otsu thresholding by selecting a representation of the WSI data that better separates H&E-stained tissue from background and artefacts than luminance
the channels are normalized so that the channels of each pixel are represented by floats ranging from 0 to 1
the following representation of the data is calculated:
Our method for segmenting H&E stained tissue
We compared the performance of our method against Otsu thresholding and Histolab’s pen filtering tools by applying these methods to a dataset of WSIs and assessing the resulting tissue segmentations qualitatively.
To compare the performances of the Otsu thresholding, Histolab and our method, we applied both methods to a selection of 60 WSIs of H&E stained duodenal biopsies. Of the 60 WSIs selected:
The WSIs were hand-picked so that they contained a wide range of artefacts of different types, shapes and colours. The WSIs were scanned with a wide range of digital scanners (Ventana, Aperio, Hamamatsu and Philips), and the 30 WSIs with no significant artefacts were selected at random and matched for scanner type of the 30 WSIs with pen marks or artefact.
All fully anonymized slide scans (and patient data) were obtained with full ethical approval from the Oxfordshire Research Ethics Committee A (IRAS: 162057; PI: Prof. E. Soilleux), and the method was performed in accordance with their guidelines and regulations. Informed consent was obtained from all subjects and/or their legal guardian(s).
Seven WSIs of H&E-stained biopsies containing artefacts of a wide range of types and colours
The aim was to segment the tissue without including background and artefacts
Second Column: The tissue segmentation provided by applying Otsu thresholding to the luminance of the WSIs placed on a white background
Otsu thresholding failed to reject a single artefact and failed to segment the tissue in (e)
Third column: the tissue segmentation from Histolab tissue thresholding and pen filters
While there was partial pen mark removal in (a–d)
the pen marks were not fully removed in any image
Forth column: the tissue segmentation from our method placed on a white background
Our method successfully segmented all tissue and rejected all background and artefacts except the pen marks in (g)
Our method failed to reject the pen marks in (g) because the pen is the same colour as the eosin
Otsu thresholding, Histolab and our method were used to segment the tissue from the 60 WSIs described above. Examples of the WSIs selected and the tissue segmentation of these methods can be viewed in Fig. 3
Examples of the tissue segmentation masks provided by Otsu thresholding and our method
and the Sørensen–Dice coefficient’s between the segmentations and a manually segmented tissue mask are displayed in the supplementary material
The tissue segmentations were assessed by a single observer
and considered “successful” if all the following were true:
All background was rejected from the segmentation
All bounding boxes were rejected from the segmentation
All artefacts were rejected from the segmentation
Otsu thresholding rejected pen and scanning artefacts from the tissue segmentation in 0/30 WSIs containing artefacts. In 2/30 WSIs containing artefacts, the influence the artefacts had on the threshold was so great that the tissue was not segmented as tissue (see Fig. 3e)
The Histolab pen filtering tool only partially removed pen marks in Fig. 3a–d, and removed no pen marks in Fig. 3g
Other artefacts such as scanning artefacts were not effected by the Histolab tools
Our method segmented the tissue in all 60/60 WSIs and rejected all artefacts in 29/30 WSIs containing pen and scanning artefacts. The only WSI where pen marks were included in the tissue segmentation can be seen in Fig. 3g
Here our method failed to reject the pen marks because tissue and non-tissue pixels could not be separated through their “pinkness”
While Otsu thresholding segmented the tissue in all artefact-free WSIs and most WSIs with artefacts, it identified all artefacts as tissue as well. In 2 out of 30 WSIs with artefacts, the presence of artefacts caused the threshold to ignore tissue and include background in the tissue segmentation as seen in Fig. 3e
the Histolab tools were not designed to remove scanning artefacts and bounding boxes so these features remained
Our method, on the other hand, segmented the tissue in all WSIs and rejected artefacts in all WSIs containing artefacts but one. The only exception can be seen in Fig. 3g
which contained pink pen marks that caused all methods to fail
The thresholding algorithm presented here is a rapid
reliable and easily implementable tissue segmentation and artefact removal tool for WSIs of H&E-stained tissue
this tool can be used as a preprocessing step that ensures artefacts do not cause the machine learning algorithm to train on irrelevant patches or patches that contain data leaking pen marks
It should be noted that this method is built to segment H&E-stained tissue only
and will not perform as intended on tissue which has been stained with stains that do not appear pink/purple
this method should be relatively simple to generalize to other stains by using representations of the WSI data that uniquely differentiate the stained tissue from background and artefacts
The datasets of WSIs analysed during this current study have not publicly available due to the large size of the WSIs and legal considerations. However, low-level representations of the WSIs used in the study have been made available at https://gitlab.developers.cam.ac.uk/bas43/h_and_e_otsu_thresholding

Núcleo central de la cultura japonesa desde mil años atrás
Kyoto es un vivo exponente del desarrollo de la arquitectura tradicional en madera –sobre todo la religiosa–

The Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto
Uji and Otsu Cities) consist of seventeen component parts that are situated in Kyoto and Uji Cities in Kyoto Prefecture and Otsu City in Shiga Prefecture
794 on the model of the ancient Chinese capital
Kyoto has acted as the cultural centre while serving as the imperial capital until the middle of the 19th century
As the centre of Japanese culture for more than a thousand years
it spans the development of Japanese wooden architecture
Most of the one hundred ninety-eight buildings and twelve gardens that make up the seventeen component parts of the property were built or designed from the 10th to the 17th centuries
All of the seventeen components of the inscribed property are religious establishments except for the castle of Nijo-jo
Together they cover a total of 1,056 hectares and are surrounded by a buffer zone of 3,579 hectares
Criterion (ii): Kyoto was the main centre for the evolution of religious and secular architecture and of garden design between the 8th and 17th centuries
and as such it played a decisive role in the creation of Japanese cultural traditions which
had a profound effect on the rest of the world from the 19th century onwards
Criterion (iv): The assemblage of architecture and garden design in the surviving monuments of Kyoto is the highest expression of this aspect of Japanese material culture in the pre-modern period
building complexes and gardens that make up the inscribed property represent various unique periods of history
seen together they illustrate the general historical development of Japanese architecture and gardens
Together the seventeen component parts provide a clear understanding of the ancient capital’s history and culture
the property gives a very comprehensive picture of Japanese culture over the long period of time
the integrity of the property is ensured in both its wholeness and intactness
each of the seventeen individual parts of the property exhibits a high degree of individual integrity
Because the scattered component parts exist within an urban context
uncontrolled development poses a threat to the inscribed property’s overall visual integrity
In the light of the Japanese tradition of restoration and reconstruction
the buildings and gardens that compose the property retain high levels of authenticity
Although in only very rare cases have entire buildings
the rigorous respect for the original form
and materials that has prevailed in Japan for more than a millennium has ensured that what is visible today conforms in almost every detail with the original structures
This tradition has been reinforced since the end of the 19th century when the Ancient Shrines and Temples Preservation Law was enacted (1897)
replaced and this work is done with careful documentation and scientific investigation
While gardens were not well preserved in the period immediately following the Second World War
since 1965 garden conservation has been included as part of the work supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and is undertaken with the same attention to excavation surveys and other research
Those responsible for such work have taken great pains to ensure the use of traditional materials and techniques
to the extent of reproducing original tools
When earlier restoration or repair work used inappropriate materials or techniques this work has been replaced with repairs based on appropriate research with no conjecture
Damaged components of both the wooden buildings and gardens are replaced only when necessary and attention is paid to historical detail
Authenticity of workmanship is enhanced with careful study of techniques and the use of appropriate tools
Most of the one hundred ninety-eight buildings across the inscribed property remain in their original location
the buildings and gardens composing the property retain high levels of authenticity in terms of form/design
gardens composing the property are protected under the 1950 Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties
Among the one hundred and ninety-eight buildings
thirty-eight are designated as National Treasures and one hundred and sixty as Important Cultural Properties
eight are designated as Special Places of Scenic Beauty and four as Places of Scenic Beauty
proposed alterations to the existing state of the property are restricted
and any alteration must be approved by the national government or local governments in case of minor alteration
Strict enforcement of building codes is carried out in the buffer zones and ongoing communication exists between the city government and property owners to balance protection of the property’s integrity with urban development
The buffer zones are covered by the Historic Environment Control Area
proposed development activities are controlled by (i) the National Parks Law
(ii) the Ancient Capitals Preservation Act
(iii) Scenic Zones under the Shiga Prefecture Scenic Zone Ordinance or the Kyoto Prefecture Scenic Zone Ordinance
and/or (iv) regulated areas under the City Town Planning and relevant city ordinances
building height in the urban areas is regulated by the Historic Environment Control Area
Kyoto City also developed its new landscape conservation policy and strategy in 2007
to strengthen the height control for buildings and to enhance the building design codes
In terms of ownership of the inscribed property
religious organizations own sixteen of the seventeen component parts
Day-to-day management is the responsibility of the individual owners who conduct necessary repairs including seismic strengthening
As fire is the greatest risk to the property
the monuments are equipped with automatic fire alarms
some owners of the component parts organize fire brigades that work in cooperation with public fire offices
Uji and Otsu Cities provide the owners of the component parts with both financial assistance and technical guidance for their protection and management

The penultimate Round 6 of the 2021 SUPER FORMULA season was held over the October 16 - 17 weekend at Twin Ring Motegi in Tochigi
With the end of the coronavirus state of emergency
Tatiana Calderón (Threebond Drago CORSE #12) was able to secure her visa
and rejoined the championship for the first time since Round 2.Cloudy skies on Saturday were in contrast to the hot and humid Round 5
Q1 and Q2 qualifying sessions were held in the afternoon divided into two groups
The eight fastest drivers proceeded to Q3.
Qualifying was underway with occasional light rain
Nirei Fukuzumi (DOCOMO TEAM DANDELION RACING #5) in Q2-A
and Shinji Matsushita (B-MAX RACING TEAM #51) in Q2-B
while Naoki Yamamoto (TCS NAKAJIMA RACING #1)
Tomoki Nojiri (TEAM MUGEN #16) and Toshiki Oyu (TCS NAKAJIMA RACING #64) proceeded to Q3.
Conditions deteriorated during the 10-minute Q3 session
causing headaches for teams deciding whether to race on slick or rain tires
Honda dominated the top three grid positions as Otsu (#15) took his first career pole position on slicks
while Yamamoto (#1) was second-fastest on rain tires
Free practice started at 10:50 am under heavy-wet conditions
but by the time the race started at 2:45 pm
the rain had stopped and conditions showed signs of improving
and as the drivers charged towards Turn 1 on rain tires
started third and avoided unnecessary battles on the wet surface
By the end of Lap 1 he was behind Makino (#6)
and on the following lap was down to eighth
he would have to wait until the final round to claim the championship
depending on where Yuhi Sekiguchi (Toyota #19) finished.
A number of drivers pitted for slick tires as the track rapidly dried
needing the safety car to enter the track and slow proceedings down
Nojiri (#16) and Matsushita (#51) took the opportunity to change to slick tires
but Yamamoto (#1) and Fukuzumi (#5) opted to stay on rain tires
losing several places in the process.
On Lap 17 the safety car was once again on track
as Calderón (#12) veered off track at Turn 2
Nojiri (#16) fourth closely followed by championship contender Sekiguchi (#19)
The race was once again restarted at the end of Lap 20
but a multi-car incident including Yamamoto (#1) soon followed
once again slowing down the race to a crawl.
Once the race resumed at the end of Lap 24
and the points he scored were sufficient to give him his first

OTSU--Schools are no better at protecting children from bullying now than a decade ago
the father of a boy who took his own life in 2011 lamented at a news conference here to mark the anniversary of the tragedy
nothing has changed in the children’s environment,” the 56-year-old man said on Oct
a second-year student of Otsu municipal junior high school in Shiga Prefecture
jumped to his death from the family's apartment after suffering abuse from his classmates
“Even if 10 years have passed or 20 years will pass
my sadness for the loss of my son never changed and will never change,” the man said
calling for improvements in school education to prevent bullying
“The same things as in my son’s case have been happening in the latest bullying cases,” he said
lamenting the sad fact that children continue to take their own lives as a result of bullying
His son endured horrible mental and physical abuse from his classmates
He was regularly beaten in the classroom and school corridors
and had his textbooks and report cards ripped up
He was forced to “practice” committing suicide and was verbally abused
it was revealed that the school and the municipal board of education had tried to cover up the fact that he had been bullied
requiring schools to detect bullying as soon as possible and report incidents
the man thought that some progress had been made to fight bullying by passing the law
“My child became the law,” he said and expressed hope that his son “should be the last one to lose a life (because of bullying).”

The municipal board of education didn’t initially admit it was a case of bullying
a third-party investigation committee started to scrutinize the case
The man now feels that despite the establishment of the 2013 law
school and other educational staff are not cognizant of bullying and how to stop it
“They should prioritize making people aware that diversity is more important than improvement of academic scores,” he said
“I don’t want to see new bullying victims and perpetrators.”

LOCK HAVEN — One of the first businesses to help kick downtown Lock Haven into economic growth during the COVID-19 pandemic continues to see growth.
Women’s clothing store, Momoyo Otsu, 147 E. Main St., offers everything you need to build the perfect outfit for any occasion. From professional to casual attire as well as handbags, belts, scarves, jewelry and more, owners Hanna and Jordan Stover hope customers can find what they’re looking for.
Opened in 2020, Momoyo Otsu has seen continued growth since. In 2021, the store expanded its jewelry section and grew its partnership with Martina Guerra Goldsmith from Jersey Shore. Hanna, Jordan and their staff worked to renovate the building next door to house the new jewelry, holding a grand opening in November — a year after first opening Momoyo Otsu.
Just like many businesses, Momoyo Otsu is gearing up for warmer weather. From light, breathable tops in pastels and flower patterns, flowing dresses and skirts to shorts and bralettes, there’s something for everyone — all stocked and ready for you to check out.
Momoyo Otsu is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. It was recently announced the store will be open from 12 to 3 p.m. on Sundays through March.
Sunday hours aren’t the only recent change, although another is not quite so temporary. Earlier in March, Stover named Deb Reese as store manager.
“We’re very happy to have her transition into this new role,” Stover said. “We feel very blessed to have the team we do.”
Not able to get into the store? Not to worry, Momoyo Otsu also has a website — www.momoyootsu.com — for those who’d like to view their inventory prior to stopping in.

Otsu hadn’t even planned to be at Autopolis until a sudden call at around 4pm on Friday afternoon. With Tomoki Nojiri out of action after being diagnosed with a collapsed lung earlier that day, Team Mugen was in need of a substitute.
With minutes to spare, Otsu caught the last available flight to Kumamoto, the city that sits to the west of Autopolis, just over an hour away by car. His seat was provided by Dandelion Racing, the team he drove for in 2022, and his previous stint in a Red Bull-liveried Mugen car in 2021 meant the title-winning outfit was able to provide his old overalls for the occasion.
Things started promisingly with fourth in practice on Saturday morning, with Otsu lapping respectably compared to pacesetter and team-mate Liam Lawson. But in Q1 later that day, it all went pear-shaped - Otsu pushed just a tiny bit too hard through Turns 8 and 9, the long left-hander and right-hand flick in the second sector, and spun into the barriers.
The red flags flew and Otsu had to start from the back of the grid - and that meant, barring a miracle, there was no way he was going to realistically challenge for an eye-catching result. In the end, from 22nd and last, he could only make his way as far as 14th by the chequered flag.
Given that his replacement at Dandelion this season, rookie Kakunoshin Ota, has failed to impress in the first part of the season, being dropped into Nojiri’s #1 machine was the ideal chance for Otsu to prove to his Honda bosses that he deserves another look.
A similar thing happened with Ukyo Sasahara when he was called up by Dandelion to replace the unwell Tadasuke Makino in early 2021. It’s probably not a stretch to say that the podium finish Sasahara scored at Suzuka was what allowed him to land a drive at Mugen last year and score two wins, even if he ultimately left Honda at the end of the year.
By contrast, Otsu will find himself looking back on a huge opportunity missed, with the race offering no real chance to recover from his qualifying mistake.
“Qualifying was everything,” admitted Otsu speaking post-race to Motorsport.com. “I had been studying Nojiri’s on-boards from last year and his set-up, but the car behaved differently to last year and I wasn’t able to react to the temperature changing.
“If I didn’t make the mistake in qualifying, and if I had made it to Q2 and started high up, I think there was a big chance to be on the podium, so I have big regrets. I was on the limit, but I thought, ‘maybe I can go a bit faster’, as I was hungry to set a good time. Maybe there was some pressure driving the #1 car, but I just went beyond my limits.”
Otsu actually made as good a start as he could have hoped for from last, gaining six places on the opening lap and then grabbing another place on the second lap to run 15th. But that’s as far as he would progress until the start of the pitstop phase, and his choice to go long didn’t end up paying dividends either as he pitted behind the late safety car. He even let through his early-stopping team-mate Liam Lawson, who went on to win the race.
“After letting Lawson go, [Sena] Sakaguchi, who was on newer tyres, came up behind me,” said Otsu. “But in the end I was about as fast as him, so considering the difference in tyre mileage, the pace was strong, so it was all about not being able to qualify well.”
It’s not clear whether Otsu will get another shot in Super Formula this year. Despite his illness, Nojiri was well enough to be at the track virtually all weekend and support the Mugen squad, so it seems likely he will be fit to drive in the next round at Sugo next month.
As the Honda reserve driver, Otsu would theoretically be first in line should any of the other teams in the brand’s stable need a stand-in this year. But to get another chance with the title-winning Mugen team, which offered the ideal platform to launch a comeback bid, seems doubtful.
“Being able to drive this weekend stirred a lot of emotions in me, and it just made my determination to compete in this series even stronger,” said Otsu. “In order to be able to do that, I want to do everything I can at the moment and make use of it for next time.”

A city in Japan city plans to use artificial intelligence to combat bullying in schools
Otsu has joined forces with Tokyo-based Hitachi Systems Ltd to collaborate on the groundbreaking project
School officials believe the technology will help teachers predict the seriousness of suspected school bullying cases
It will examine the grade-level and gender of the suspected victims and perpetrators as well as when and where the bullying occurred.
Otsu mayor Naomi Koshi previously said she expects local schools to “act firmly against [bullying] without solely being dependent on teachers’ experience, by having AI theoretically analyse past data.”
The education board believes the analysis, expected to be completed by October, will make known the characteristics of bullying to help teachers identify cases in their classrooms.
Otsu’s education board came under fire over the handling of a case involving a 13-year-old boy who committed suicide in 2011 by jumping from the building he lived in.
In 2013, a panel determined he had been a victim of bullying.
Since then, the city’s education board has required each school to report bullying cases within 24 hours.
