the company was weeks away from receiving approval for Opdivo (nivolumab) the first ever PD-1 inhibitor to receive regulatory approval anywhere in the world Through Ono’s collaboration with Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) Opdivo would eventually become a breakout cancer treatment and multi-blockbuster asset as a stand-alone therapy and in combination with other oncology drugs Sagara was optimistic that Opdivo would be able to treat multiple cancer types and that the product would “bring Ono international recognition and transform us into a true global pharmaceutical company.” Of the $1.4 billion in top line sales recorded by Ono in fiscal year (FY) 2013 (ending March 31 Sagara spoke about his plans to “aggressively” push Ono’s medicines into Asia but admitted a lingering concern: “We still need more progress on what I call ‘accelerating to the speed of global competition.’” Ono doubled down on medium to long term plans to become a global specialty pharma The company opened a new office in Cambridge and is working to establish marketing operations is Western countries to support “niche products that do not require large-scale sales organizations.” In the U.S. Ono plans to increase employee headcount from roughly 100 in FY 2022 to 160 in FY 2025 and to build out sales and marketing capabilities in Europe adding to its 60 employees in Europe in FY 2022 Sagara notes in the report that Ono has 10 drugs in development that “could be successors for Opdvio and [we] are aiming to have at least two or three of them on the market by FY 2031.” Given its foundational role in the creation of a new class of modern cancer immunotherapies and the company’s active development programs Ono Pharmaceuticals is a name Westerners are likely to hear more often in the future Investigative stories and local news updates Coverage of the Hawaiʻi State legislature in 2025 Award winning in-depth reports and featured on-going series Get the week’s news delivered straight to your inbox Eric Sagara is a senior data journalist for Big Local News he was a data journalist at Reveal from the Center Investigative Journalism He has also been a News Applications Fellow at ProPublica and a data journalist at the Newark Star Ledger Sagara began his career as a reporter for the Tucson Citizen covering a variety of beats including crime After the state passed a law barring government contractors from donating to politicians fund-raising parties showed just how completely the reform effort failed Civil Beat has been named the best overall news site in Hawaii for the 14th year in a row by the Society of Professional Journalists Hawaii Chapter By I’ve been revisiting some more old favourites Michelle Sagara has been writing her Chronicles of Elantra series for the last fifteen years. This year sees the publication of the first of a pair of prequel novels, The Emperor’s Wolves. I had the opportunity to read a review copy, and it sent me off to re-read all fifteen of the Chronicles of Elantra, starting with Cast in Shadow and Cast in Wisdom) are a satisfying combination of contemporary-feeling secondary world city-based fantasy Every single volume has a relatively self-contained arc (at least one major problem and major frequently means fate-of-the-world is solved in every one) but the series as a whole has continuing arcs of growth and change for its cast of characters the city of Elantra’s investigative police force The trouble she encounters isn’t always—or even usually—related to her job Kaylin’s also possessed of magical powers related to the marks on her skin that appeared when she was a child: powers she doesn’t understand Although history records the previous existence of other people with those marks and similar powers and her tendency to leap to the defence of the underdog gets her embroiled in a wide range of potentially world-ending trouble Kaylin’s grounding in the everyday—her concerns for her success in her chosen profession her connections with a community—means that while she’s vitally important in solving world-ending problems the narrative never puts Kaylin into the role of a chosen one she doesn’t do things because of fate or special powers: she does it because she’s got a job protecting the people of Elantra and her skills and talents let her do more than she might otherwise be able to do Kaylin has acquired a wider circle of friends and allies these are what give the books fresh interest and appeal with every new volume More people bring with them more problems and concerns and their own ways of seeing the world—and Elantra one of only a handful of Dragons remaining Elantra is home to the immortal (and violently political) Barrani; the winged Aerians; the great-cat-like Leontines; mind-reading Tha’alaani Kaylin’s friends and allies include Ybelline the leader of the Tha’alaani; Bellusdeo whom she’s known all her life and who has his own guilts and secrets; Teela and a power among her own people in her own right; and eventually at least one sentient building and a round dozen youthful Barrani who are not exactly entirely Barrani anymore and whose political maneouvring means that Kaylin will have to finally get to grips with the kind of politics and etiquette she hates (The Emperor’s Wolves is the story of some of Severn’s secrets so it’s a prequel novel that I can entirely get behind.) engaging fantasy novels that always leave me feeling satisfied—and rather reassured despite occasional horrible things happening Thanks for reminding me of this series; I think I stopped reading after book eight or so and it might be good to get caught up. Thanks Liz. I’m just finishing Krista Ball’s Ladies Occult Series. It’s only vaguely fantasy so far and mostly a very detailed account of how women were restricted in the regency. I’m also having a nostalgic reread of the Belgarion series. Comfort reading, still in lockdown  I am very fond of this series. I reread from the beginning in anticipation of one of the newer releases, and it was fun to see it all evolve and expand in a shorter time. I’m looking forward to Severn’s prequel and more Ybelline will be a treat. I’m having trouble finding things I want to finish. Several things I should like are lingering on my TBR pile because I can’t get into them. Mostly I’m rereading. I can recommend KJ Charles’s newest, the Will Darling adventures. Two of the three are out. M/m romance, as are many of hers. No fantasy elements in this series; it’s in the style of 1920s-era pulp adventure with spies, secret societies, mysterious threats, and murder, in post-WW1 England. Great series except book #13, the worst book in the series by far and a totally underwhelming book #14.   #15 Cast in Wisdom saves the series and quite well at that. I love this series.  It is interesting how each book is the continuing story of Kaylin’s life.  It can make some books weaker than others, but on a reread it flows nicely.   Currently, I’m comfort rereading Ilona Andrews serieses. I also just finished Trader’s Leap by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. colour isn’t as much of a problem for Elantra as species because humanity isn’t the only race in the city Elantra has lawyers and a large bureaucracy That the head of government is an Emperor – and also a Dragon – is a minor consideration unless you’re on the wrong side of his laws Encouraging people to stay on the right side of those Laws are the Hawks one third of the force tasked with keeping the peace Private Kaylin Neya is a member of the Hawks; along with her partner she patrols the City in an attempt to keep it safe She’s at home in the rougher streets of Elantra Kaylin is the main character of the series and the books involve her attempt to more-or-less do her job But in a world where magic and magical beings exist the job isn’t quite as mundane as she’d like it to be on most days… Did you have the whole series planned from the start But my intent with the Cast series was to structure it more as a continuing television series than as an -ology I know that some people love world building (I know two authors who for fun when current projects are hugely stressful which is not anyone’s definition of user friendly) So I had a couple of books that I wanted to write in the series itself I wanted to write a book about the Aerians (winged people) I wanted to write a book about the Leontines (cat people I wanted to write a book about the Dragon Court (which I still haven’t found story for) that I would write until I had no stories I wanted to tell I started out with a handful of stories that I wanted to tell in the most general of terms (Side note: I’m not a great outliner I’ve done a submission outline exactly once in my life and this taught me that it is better by far for me to just finish an entire novel and submit that I have a huge amount of envy for people who can outline but have learned that I’m just not one of them Even having a very general outline for a series of books (The Queen of the Dead) meant writing book two from page one four times; I only finished that book when I finally realized that the event that had been my intended closer was… never I knew that I had the freedom to write the books I wanted to write and while writing those handful of very loose ideas What particular advantages or pleasures does working in the same universe offer you as a writer The best thing about working in the same universe – for me – is the characters Because there’s no must-finish-by-book-number-X stricture it means that as characters open up and unfold Little things from earlier books can eventually become books in their own right That wasn’t planned; what I’d planned was something different But there’s a flow to writing and a flow to story because no two writers I know have the same processes – that story resides in character; the plot follows characters So my intentions would be like an outline (but never written down) “this is what the book will be about.” But very often I don’t always have a clear path to that end because the path I had gets trampled into invisibility when I write actual It would be about Kaylin having to deal with real life I now had an entirely different set of problems for Kaylin and the Hawks The situation in which Kaylin found herself hadn’t; the difficulties she had to handle had Cast in Deception also comes directly out of the consequences of the characters that arrived in Cast in Sorrow Cast in Flame – in theory a more mundane book about having to find a new home among other things – into something much more explosive The book I’m currently writing follows Cast in Deception (which was just published) but I have a book I want to write immediately after it which might – just might – finally be the Dragon Court book All of this is possible in a continuing series the characters aren’t confined by it The thing I love best about the continuing series and characters is that I can take the time around events to develop those characters (She’s speaking about Cast in Shadow This isn’t a good place to start the series: I’d advise any newcomers to start with the second book but it has more of a fantasy romance feel than is actually true of the series.) I think there’s relevant information in the first book about some of the characters that continue – but I do feel that people coming to the series from the first book might expect more romance I don’t objectively always understand how it works they don’t filter down into the grit that is my writer loam because that’s also bedrock to me – but how they became couples remains a bit out of reach I would have to make entirely intellectual decisions and I would have to force the book and characters to conform to those decisions It’s fine to start at the first book but if the romantic elements are what you like best about it you probably won’t love the rest of the series that follows Why do you think readers enjoy series work so much honestly – or at least that’s why I do I read series books because I’ve grown fond of the various characters in them and I’d like to know more about their lives going forward I like to see the consequences of various decisions; I like to see the way those decisions play out in later books I’m not really approaching this as a writer because reading was the first activity I truly loved as a child and it’s still incredibly important to me Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know I have just worked out the title of the next Cast novel it takes up almost exactly where Cast in Deception ends This interview and more like it in the April 2018 issue of Locus While you are here please take a moment to support Locus with a one-time or recurring donation We rely on reader donations to keep the magazine and site going and would like to keep the site paywall free but WE NEED YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT to continue quality coverage of the science fiction and fantasy field Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" “LOCUS is the only periodical I read from cover to cover It is also the only magazine which makes me drop everything when it arrives…” Locus Magazine and Website cover science fiction and allows us to continue to share our content without a paywall Even a small contribution goes a long way toward keeping Locus going and keeping you up to date with new exciting books and in the know about the SFF world (Updated)The water connection to a building adjacent to the official residence of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa formerly used by his security was discontinued today The General Secretary of the Podu Jana Peramuna Sagara Kariyawasam told Timesonline that the water connection had been disconnected in the building which earlier occupied by army officials who provided security to the former President The army officers with withdrawn due to the reduction of the security of the former President Mr Kariywasam added that there had been no water connection interruption in the area occupied by the former president Rajapaksa “ Cabinet  ministers as well as the President said that they would write to the former president calling him to vacate the residence.  At that moment we too called them to do so and send a letter in writing He claimed that the government is unable to walk the talk and submit a letter but had turned to other ways to get the former president to vacate the house by disrupting basic requirements such as water and electricity The party General Secretary said that the official residence for a president is not a privilege but a right which is backed by an Act and therefore the move taken by the government is wrong  “President Rajapaksa is a former president yet requires more security than the current President Anura Kumara Dissanayake as he ended the 30 year civil war” he said Meanwhile the National Water Supply and Drainage Board clarifying their position has issued a statement The statement said that the water had been disconnected due to a non-payment of a bill of Rs 429 The NWSDB confirmed that the water connection was disconnected of a building adjoining to the Former President’s residence at Wijerama Mawatha Read this week’s Sunday Times for your interesting articles including the ’’5th Column’’ All the content on this website is copyright protected and can be reproduced only by giving the due courtesy to 'sundaytimes.lk' Copyright © 2019 Wijeya Newspapers Ltd The Texas Rangers are trying something new Whereas tradition had been to name one pitching coach and one bullpen coach the Rangers have hired both Doug Mathis and Brendan Sagara for the same role “Often (pitching) becomes one person’s program with the other person in more of a support role,” said GM and president of baseball operations Jon Daniels “We felt we had two guys that together were better than just having one of them individually run the program; they both have some individual strengths mutual respect and we wanted to highlight in how we titled them — that’s our expectation that they’re going to work together to develop our pitching staff and develop our players’ individual skills … There’s a lot to do and it’s a bigger job than just one person.” From the perspective of fans watching the game it won’t appear on the surface to be much of a change at all Mathis will still be in the dugout with manager Chris Woodward and Sagara will be in the bullpen with the relief pitchers But Daniels and Woodward both made it clear that the two men will have equal responsibility for the development and success of the pitching staff assign half of the pitchers to one coach and half to the other One example of how the work is divided will start immediately: Sagara will be in charge of the offseason development plans for pitchers Mathis will be in charge of coordinating spring training schedules “You look at what Sags can do from an analytical/data/video he can put together plans on guys,” said Woodward.”(He’s) really good at drawing up (game plans) putting it then on a video for (pitchers) to understand and (it’s) digestible Doug’s obviously really good talking with these guys and understanding deliveries and mechanics Mathis served as the bullpen coach under pitching coach Julio Rangel last season and Sagara had been hired as a special assistant and AAA pitching coach a year ago before COVID-19 scuttled the minor-league season he served as a pitching coach on the Rangers’ alternate site with the players who were not on the active roster Daniels said the team did vet a few outside names but ultimately didn’t interview anyone outside the organization we went through a pretty extensive process interviewed a number of external pitching coaches,” Daniels explained that we didn’t feel like a whole lot had necessarily changed out there as far as who was out there.” He also cited the added benefit of both coaches having familiarity with the players and the positive impressions both have made so far during their time in the organization Sagara will not be the only coach from the alternate site to shift over to the big leagues in 2020; Bobby Wilson the former Rangers catcher who was hired last year to manage in AA “We had initially thought about him being the catching coordinator in the minor leagues we thought there was an opportunity for him to coordinate that activity while being our major-league catching coach,” Daniels explained “So he will be in the big leagues the large majority of the time handling our catching instruction (and) will coordinate the catching instruction throughout the organization And there will be a couple of times throughout the year where he goes out to AAA and AA to assist with the upper-level catching instruction in person.” who was relieved of his catching coach duties a few weeks ago although Daniels said the Rangers are not ready to announce anything on his new role As for the rest of the coaching staff, it remains largely unchanged. Don Wakamatsu will return as bench coach, Tony Beasley will remain in his role as outfield coach and third base coach. Luis Ortiz retains his role as the hitting coach with Callix Crabbe as the assistant hitting coach Alex Burg (run production coordinator) and Brett Hayes (run prevention coordinator) will stick around for 2021 and Corey Ragsdale will continue to serve as the field coordinator as the Rangers expect to field a very young team next season Levi Weaver is a staff writer for The Athletic covering the Texas Rangers. he was a mentor a walking embodiment of charm and charisma With legs so long you wondered what a roundhouse kick from him would look like he carried himself with a swagger that made it seem like he was paying more tax than MTN and BAT combined where he led a brave group of ten journalists who left The Monitor to create something fresh and daring It wasn’t just bold; it was downright revolutionary for our time My first day in the newsroom around 1997 was unforgettable and to say I was lost would be an understatement typing with one finger at a time as if I was picking beans stood by my side and helped me type my first-ever news story You’d think I was writing the next great investigative piece His calm demeanor and reassuring guidance turned an intimidating moment into one of growth anyone who worked at The Crusader remembers the infamous story that almost turned the newsroom upside down The Crusader had published an explosive piece about Museveni allegedly arming his Banyankore tribesmen What followed was straight out of a spy thriller: security personnel stormed our offices and strategic—who was running around with Peter Mwesige ensuring that these guys appeared in court immediately They even raided the home of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) That’s the kind of dedication and loyalty that defined Ona He wasn’t just a journalist; he was a protector of the craft and of his people And then there’s the legendary semen story this was an actual case involving Museveni sending cattle semen from his Rwakitura farm to Vice President Kazibwe to inseminate her cattle crafting the sensational headline “KAZIBWE POURS MUSEVENI’S SEMEN.” It was scandalous When Ona saw the headline at the printing press his eyes practically popped out of his head he ordered the presses to stop and swiftly changed the headline to “KAZIBWE POURS RWAKITURA SEMEN.” Crisis averted—sort of and only Ona could have pulled it off with such finesse Ona was the kind of friend who looked out for you seeking support for a project at Bullseye Creative he was Director of Corporate Affairs at Nile Breweries but that didn’t stop him from rolling up his sleeves and helping me out He led me directly to the marketing manager so make it happen!” That was Ona for you—he didn’t just pass the buck; he made sure the job got done I had been meaning to meet up with him to sign my copy of his book While I won’t delve into his time as MP for Amuria or Museveni’s spokesperson it’s safe to say that Ona’s influence stretched far beyond the newsroom and friend will live on in the countless lives he touched Ona wasn’t just a great journalist; he was an extraordinary human being and the memories will always bring a smile Tags and website in this browser for the next time I comment Metrics details Fluorescence-based organic light-emitting diodes have continued to attract interest because of their long operational lifetimes high colour purity of electroluminescence and potential to be manufactured at low cost in next-generation full-colour display and lighting applications the exciton production efficiency is limited to 25% due to the deactivation of triplet excitons Here we report fluorescence-based organic light-emitting diodes that realize external quantum efficiencies as high as 13.4–18% for blue indicating that the exciton production efficiency reached nearly 100% The high performance is enabled by utilization of thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecules as assistant dopants that permit efficient transfer of all electrically generated singlet and triplet excitons from the assistant dopants to the fluorescent emitters Organic light-emitting diodes employing this exciton harvesting process provide freedom for the selection of emitters from a wide variety of conventional fluorescent molecules Light emission can be extracted through fluorescence or phosphorescence by the decay of these excitons from a singlet (S1) or triplet (T1) excited state to a ground state By utilizing efficient radiative decay of electrically generated excitons organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are attracting intense attention for use as advanced displays and lighting sources The external electroluminescence (EL) quantum efficiency (ηEQE) of OLEDs is a key parameter and is described by the well-known equation where ηint is the internal EL quantum efficiency and ηout is the light-out-coupling efficiency ηint is limited by the following three factors: (i) charge balance of injected holes and electrons (γ) (ii) efficiency of radiative exciton production (ηγ) and (iii) photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of the emitter molecules (ΦPL) The ideal γ can be achieved by circumspect design of OLED structures with the appropriate selection of charge transport layers based on a proper molecular design for light emission ΦPL of nearly 100% has been demonstrated in a wide variety of fluorescent and phosphorescent materials ηγ can severely limit ηint if the 75% of electrically generated excitons formed in triplet states are not harvested the rather limited ηint is due to the presence of the competitive deactivation process of triplet–triplet energy transfer the ηint of traditional fluorescence-based OLEDs is limited to less than 25% even in the ideal case the enhancement of ηint in OLEDs using conventional fluorescence-based emitters is still obviously a major concern for the development of future OLEDs In addition to the use of the TADF process for emitters in OLEDs we propose a promising route for triplet harvesting by applying TADF molecules as an assistant dopant in OLEDs the OLED is composed of a double-dopant system—that is a TADF-assistant dopant and a fluorescent emitter dopant—that leads to ηγ=100% triplet excitons created on an assistant TADF molecule () by electrical excitation are upconverted to the S1 state of the TADF molecule () and all excitons are transferred to the S1 state of a fluorescent emitter molecule () via a FRET process which results in efficient radiative decay from of the fluorescent emitter (a) Schematic illustration of proposed energy transfer mechanism in the emitter dopant:assistant dopant:host matrix under electrical excitation and chemical structures of the assistant dopants used in this study (b–e) Fluorescence spectra of assistant dopant:host co-deposited film (upper) and absorption (dashed line) and fluorescence (solid line) spectra of emitter dopant in solution (10−5 mol l−1 in CH2Cl2) (bottom) Rather large Förster transfer radii of ~2.2 yellow and red EML matrices based on the spectral overlap between the absorption spectrum of the acceptor and the PL spectrum of the donor suggesting that efficient FRET is possible Figure 1a shows an energy transfer diagram for the emitter layers (EMLs) in our cascade-type EL devices. The emitter and assistant dopant molecule combinations and concentrations studied as EMLs here are listed in Table 1 In the case of an EML without any assistant dopant the injected carriers are transported on the host molecules and the carriers are eventually trapped on an emitter dopant due to its shallower highest occupied molecular orbital and deeper lowest unoccupied molecular orbital compared with those of the host material This results in direct carrier recombination dominantly on the emitter dopants no triplet excitons contribute to the total EL efficiency the created triplet excitons would not contribute to the energy transfer processes if the assistant dopant is a conventional fluorescence material (a–d) External EL quantum efficiency as a function of luminance for the blue The external EL quantum efficiency for OLEDs without an assistant dopant is plotted as open symbols Inset: chemical structures of emitter dopants used in this study (e) EL spectra of the devices at a luminance of 100 cd m−2 (a) Time-resolved electroluminescence image for the red OLED The streak image (left) and time-resolved EL decay curve (right) are for the red OLED under electrical excitation with a pulse of 1 μs at 300 K A delayed EL spectrum was collected from 3 to 50 μs after excitation (b) Time-resolved PL and EL response of a 1 wt%-DBP:15 wt%-tri-PXZ-TRZ:CBP film (red line) and 1 wt%-DBP:15 wt%-tri-PXZ-TRZ:CBP-based OLED (black line) For operational lifetime measurement of the double-dopant system an OLED with a device structure of ITO/α-NPD (35 nm)/1 wt%-TBRb:25 wt%-PXZ-TRZ:mCBP (30 nm)/T2T (10 nm)/Alq3 (55 nm)/LiF (0.8 nm)/Al (100 nm) (device A) was used To confirm the effect of the assistant dopant OLEDs with an EML of either 1 wt%-TBRb:mCBP (device B) or 25 wt%-PXZ-TRZ:mCBP (device C) were also measured at a constant current density of 10 mA cm−2 the flexibility of simple aromatic compound design can further boost the ηEQE by enhancement of ηout without special light-out-coupling structures we presume that the cascade energy transfer scheme using TADF assistant dopants and fluorescent emitter dopants will be the most promising device architecture for OLEDs with ultimate performance We synthesized ACRXTN according to the general procedure. to the latest round of California's statewide stay-at-home orders including a drive-thru experience at a place that grows produce Tanaka Farms in Irvine is hosting its first festival of lights A lot of preparations have gone into getting it ready Strawberry shaped lights line a hillside just across the way from the farm’s strawberry fields Eileen Sagara manages events at the farm and said it's a “Big deal for me because I just enjoy the end of the year.” Sagara said this is when things typically slows down at the farm a nod to this Japanese-owned family-run farm So we thought it would be an appropriate name for the show," Sagara said Tanaka Farms' Hikari event is a festival of lights It’s the first time the farm is putting on an event at night “We had a lot of hiccups along the way just trying to get ready because of the weather conditions,” said Sagara was able bring the holiday lights destination to life Sagara said the event was actually planned before the pandemic “A lot of it was coincidence this year that we didn’t realize that there was such a need for somewhere for people to go and to do something,” Sagara said Tanaka Farms said the event can continue under this most recent statewide stay-at-home order because the farm is considered an essential business That means the many people hired for this event Sagara said they had an overwhelming response to the farm’s help wanted ad and hired several dozen people including some furloughed Disney employees And they’re just happy to be here," Sagara said The pandemic-friendly holiday event is a drive-thru experience which includes a mile-long route along Candy Cane Road Stephanie Saunders said she really enjoyed bringing her family I mean this is the way to really celebrate Christmas right now,” Saunders said were in the back seat of her car dressed in their Christmas pajamas Both boys agreed on their favorite part of the drive “The big Christmas tree changing colors,” said Dean.  But before the drive officially ended for the Saunders they had one more stop where they got so see a bearded man in a red suit Saunders and her boys yelled and clapped as they saw the final attraction It’s an experience Sagara said she plans to share with her family “I can’t wait to bring my granddaughter here!” she said The festival of lights at Tanaka Farms does require reservations. Prices range from $49 to $59 per vehicle. Tanaka Farms also has a Christmas market at the farm that does sell Christmas trees and holiday related items. Mumbai’s Akara Art gallery is presenting a solo booth of works by the Indian artist and sculptor Piraji Sagara (1931-2014). “We are working with the estate and are very excited to show his works to a newer audience in the Middle East,” a gallery spokesman says. Sagara quietly began making “wood collages” reminiscent of Gujarati folk traditions in the 1960s, a selection of which are on display in the Modern section of Art Dubai. These include a 1974 untitled piece comprised of nails, beads, sand and paint on burnt wood. Sagara developed this aspect of his practice throughout his life. The journalist Tanuj Kumar says: “In the 1980s, when most Indian artists were shuttling between figuration and abstraction on canvas, the late artist [Sagara] was busy hammering nails on to a burnt wooden board, carving it, adding bits and bobs of metallic paraphernalia.” Woman with Fish (1958) has flourishes typical of Samir Rafi’s work Ayman Lotfy The artist Samir Rafi (1926-2004) may well have been a trailblazing adherent of Egyptian Surrealism during the 1940s, but he had “an aesthetic style and technique uniquely his own”, according to the late Egyptian art critic Aimé Azar. Fish, human figures and dogs were among his favourite motifs, which were rendered in dark and emphatic outlines. Woman with Fish (1958) has a Surrealist undertone but displays flourishes that are typical of Rafi. The work shows the influence of Picasso, who corresponded with the Egyptian artist, says a spokesman for Cairo’s Ubuntu Art Gallery. Picasso wrote in a letter to the Italian Futurist Gino Severini, dated 1 June 1960, that Rafi was “an Egyptian with something [developing] in his stomach, which is always powerful”. “Throughout all his artistic stages, Rafi showed mastery in line and space. He included elements of geometric abstraction in dark or muted colours compatible with the dream-like Surrealist approach,” a gallery spokesman says. “This took on a melancholic form that set him apart from his contemporaries.” This painting, along with other works by Rafi the gallery is bringing, was purchased directly from the artist’s family after his death in 2004. review22 March 2019No mega-buck deals, but Art Dubai dodges economic doldrumsCity's economy may be flagging but fair's diverse offering and clientele help sales stay afloat—up to a certain price Cast in Oblivion, Michelle Sagara (Mira 978-0-7783-0784-6, $16.99, 538pp, tp) February 2019 Cover by Glenn Mackay & Shane Rebenschied Michelle Sagara has a long career behind her under at least two names Her House War series as Michelle West is ongoing and she’s been writing the Chronicles of Elantra series as Michelle Sagara for going on 15 years now Cast in Oblivion comes to us as the 14th novel in a series that started as a set of stories akin to fantasy police procedurals It’s only grown more and more epic since its inception with its characters consistently faced with new and different variations on a threat to their existence Many of the earlier Elantra novels are pretty forgiving of new readers (so forgiving that I generally advise people to start with the second book which is tonally a better match for the series’ continuing direction) But the most recent ones – which is to say everything after Cast in Chaos – tend to require the reader to already have a good grasp of the context and the ongoing problems that the series presents its main character Kaylin might be a private in the city police force but she’s marked by magic that she’s only beginning and fate – and her habit of leaping in to help her friends – has put her time and again at the nexus of significant events she’s saved the world (or if not the world an awful lot of lives) probably several times over Her etiquette hasn’t gotten any better although she has the only known female Dragon as a roommate and she’s a Lord of the Barrani court she didn’t mean to come within a hair’s breadth of starting a war But among her companions was the Dragon Bellusdeo and she returned to Elantra with nine Barrani immortals friends of her friend Teela – who have been much changed by their experiences in the so-called heart of the green Dragon-Barrani politics are fraught at the best of times and Barrani court politics can be murderous The returned Barrani want to take their places as Lords of the court is that at the heart of the Barrani High Court is a Shadow that’s been doing its level best to warp Barrani to its cause – and it traps Barrani who fail the Test of Name The Barrani Consort – the mother of her race – had tried to kill or imprison Kaylin’s new Barrani houseguests rather than risk them taking the Test of Name their power could be laid at the feet of the ancient enemy If they take the Test of Name knowing the stakes perhaps they can vanquish this threat lurking at the heart of the Barrani High Halls The Chronicles of Elantra has accreted to itself a wide cast and Kaylin is very much focused on people rather than systems so the real joy of a new instalment in this series is being able to reunite with familiar characters In Cast in Oblivion we learn more about Teela (Lord An’Teela of the Barrani court) and her Barrani compatriots and Kaylin learns a little more about the value of patience – and manners delightfully enjoyable in the best tradition of Sagara’s work it’s got some serious questions at its core I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series This review and more like it in the April 2019 issue of Locus It’s one of the most important sources of news about science fiction When a conversation about quality bootmakers comes up, there are certain shoemakers that are bound to be mentioned.
