Saito Finishes Season at NCAA Wrestling Championships3/21/2025 10:53:00 AM | Wrestling
the F1 Japanese Grand Prix was held at the Suzuka Circuit
This issue of Honda Stories shares an interview with Tsuyoshi Saito
President of Honda Mobilityland Corporation
regarding Honda’s efforts to expand connections between F1 and the Japanese public
After serving as head of the Corporate Governance Supervisory Unit
he moved to his current post of Honda Mobilityland Corporation President in 2023
The F1 Japanese GP recently held at Suzuka Circuit was a huge success
This year was also impressive in that a combined music and gourmet food event was held in Odaiba
The "F1 TOKYO FAN FESTIVAL" was held in Odaiba to bring F1 to people who could not make it to Suzuka Circuit in Mie Prefecture
This event was co-hosted by Honda and Honda Mobilityland
the event combined music and gourmet food to create an atmosphere that even families and people unfamiliar with F1 could enjoy
and visitors could experience F1 through simulators and the Pit Stop Challenge
which tasked visitors with changing tires as quickly as they could
The WORLD FOOD CIRCUIT ZONE offered gourmet foods from various F1 host countries
and the TWILIGHT MUSIC ZONE treated visitors with live music featuring artists from a wide range of genres
“Red Bull Showrun x Powered by Honda,” a F1 car showrun event
especially as F1 cars drove on public roads in Tokyo
and Yuki Tsunoda had just moved up to Oracle Red Bull Racing
This demonstration run event was organized by the Executive Committee for the F1 International Top Motorsport Experience Project
with support from Honda and Red Bull Japan
The Red Bull Showrun featuring an F1 car was held for the first time in six years since 2019
I believe visitors were able to experience up close the speed
driven by four-time consecutive world champion Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda from Oracle Red Bull Racing
and Liam Lawson and Isaac Hadjar from Visa Cash App Racing Bulls
Liam Lawson and Isaac Hadjar drove the PRELUDE prototype
while Yuki Tsunoda and Max Verstappen drove the Honda 0 SUV prototype
Honda has taken various initiatives to manage the race and satisfy Suzuka Circuit visitors
and will continue its efforts and demonstrate strong collaboration to make F1 more appealing to everyone
including people who cannot come to Suzuka
and we would like to continue to expand exposure of the F1 Japanese GP outside of the circuit
Honda is strengthening its efforts to make the appeal of F1 more widely known
One of the initiatives we are most focused on is the F1 Tokyo Festival
featuring F1 driver talk shows and F1 car exhibits in Shinjuku Kabukicho in 2023 and in Roppongi Hills in 2024
with Kabuki actor Danjuro Ichikawa as the official Japanese GP ambassador
we held a public viewing of the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix and an F1 car exhibit at the Kabuki-za Theater in Tokyo
F1 boasts a 75-year history as the world’s premier automobile racing category
6.5 million people a year watch F1 grands prix at circuits around the world
and with more than 700 million F1 fans worldwide
F1 is one of the world’s leading forms of sports entertainment
The first F1 Japanese GP was held at Suzuka Circuit in 1987
and this year marks the 35th running of the event
when the F1 Japanese GP resumed at Suzuka Circuit
The cumulative number of visitors to date is more than 8.9 million
the Japanese F1 boom in the 1990s was tremendous
triggered by race broadcasts and F1 drivers appearing in variety shows on TV brought F1 to the attention of the Japanese in a big way
Many will remember the names of drivers such as Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost
F1 is seen as a phenomenon of the past in Japan
F1’s popularity has increased dramatically worldwide
with the number of visitors from overseas rising from 50,000 last year to 80,000 in 2025
Tsunoda has more than 3 million followers on Instagram [as of April 2025]
That’s the second most followers among Japanese athletes
The F1 scene is once again gaining momentum in Japan
Honda Mobilityland’s mission is to foster a culture of mobility and promote and expand motorsports
the entire Honda group is promoting various approaches to convey the appeal of F1 to more customers and companies
including the younger generation who are not familiar with F1
The first F1 Japanese GP business conference was held on April 4
F1 is in fact increasing its presence as a business venue worldwide
In order to convey the appeal of F1 to companies in Japan and encourage them to view the F1 Japanese GP as a business opportunity
we held our first F1 Japan GP business conference coinciding with the F1 Japan GP
More than 130 people from 70 companies attended the conference
with experts talking about how F1 has grown globally
what kind of business investments have global companies made
and what the possibilities are for business collaboration using the F1 Japanese GP and Suzuka Circuit
In order to continue holding the F1 Japanese GP here for many years to come
with the help of not only the F1 fans who have supported us
and the companies who work with us to make the Japanese GP exciting
to maximize the appeal and value of F1 and accelerate our efforts for the next generation

The organization honors physician-scientists for outstanding scholarly contributions in biomedical research
and pathology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC has been elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI)
Takeshi Saito, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine, molecular microbiology & immunology, and pathology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC has been elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI)
one of the country’s oldest and most respected medical honor societies supporting the scientific efforts
and clinical aspirations of physician-scientists
Saito’s contributions in bringing together biomedical research and health care delivery
exemplify the critical role that physician-scientists play in advancing medical research and the practice of medicine,” said Carolyn C
“His election is a testament to his impactful work and commitment to furthering medical knowledge and clinical care.”
Saito is among 100 physicians elected in 2024
and one of 19 members of the Keck School of Medicine’s faculty who have been inducted into the society’s membership since it was established in 1908
“It is a huge honor to be selected from among the nation’s physician-scientists to membership in the society,” said Saito
“I admire the contributions that many of the society’s physician-scientists have made to understanding disease and advancing the practice of medicine
To be included among them for my research is humbling and deeply gratifying.”
who earned his medical degree and his PhD in molecular virology at Showa University School of Medicine
joined the faculty of the Keck School of Medicine in 2010
Saito treats patients suffering from liver diseases and runs a research laboratory that elucidates the molecular mechanisms underlying disorders of the liver
His research focuses on learning how hepatocytes
perform in their natural state and how they react when confronted with common causes of liver diseases such as hepatitis viruses
Saito is known to be an expert in using a state-of-the-art study platform – mice that are bioengineered to grow human livers
also known as humanized liver chimeric mice – to understand how liver diseases begin
and the pathways involved with their progression
“Investigating the mechanisms and the biological processes behind the progression of disease is the first step to finding new treatments,” said Saito
Saito noted that it is physician-scientists’ mission to address gaps in knowledge that lead to unmet needs in the clinic
which is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States
he noted that since most people do not notice or experience symptoms of liver disease until significant damage has taken place
they tend not be diagnosed or receive care until they have developed end-stage liver disease
many of these patients have no treatment options other than to have a liver transplant
“I believe it is our duty as physician-scientists to focus on addressing the gaps in knowledge that contribute to unmet needs in the clinic
where early detection and treatment are often lacking,” said Saito
“My hope is that our discoveries will lead to new treatments for people with this condition.”
the ASCI Council considers nominations of several hundred physician-scientists aged 50 years or younger who have achieved prominence in their field through groundbreaking research
Every nomination must be supported by at least four other notable physician-scientists
the ASCI selects only 100 new members a year
Membership in the ASCI is considered a prestigious recognition of the researcher’s outstanding achievements and a testament to their impactful contributions in academic medicine and science
The society is composed of more than 3,000 physician-scientists representing all medical specialties
It is one of the few organizations focused on the special role of physician-scientists in research
as well as leadership positions in academic medicine and the life sciences industry

The Wrong Side of the Brush brings together six paintings
a technique favored by Saito that puts his work into direct conversation with that of Helen Frankenthaler
who also often preferred to paint onto — to paint atop — an unprepared ground
These raw canvas patches or pools enframed by playful color became a hallmark of Saito’s acrylic style of the period
but this intimate grouping of canvases is unified by a more subtle procedure
“the wrong side of the brush,” to drag lines — squiggly lines
slashing lines — through the background color
The result suggests the fundamentally abstract nature of craquelure
and seams abraded and coming loose — lines along which light might enter the painting and illuminate it from within

After 39 years as a teacher in Mississauga,in Mississauga
Ross Oakes is now the principal of a different kind of school — an academy dedicated to shiatsu
a form of Japanese holistic healing using one’s hands
Although Oakes is Canadian born and has no ethnic ties to Japan
he wants to see shiatsu to grow and flourish in this country
with Canadians from all walks of life enjoying its benefits
and stimulated his energy levels and his creativity
and sharpened his mental capabilities in ways he didn’t think possible
he also teaches introductory classes on shiatsu to students at the Shiatsu Academy of Tokyo
But why are we talking about someone who is not an immigrant in our “Success Story” of the month
The reason is that he is an example of the countless Canadians who have been influenced positively by immigrants
it was his Japanese-born therapist and founder of the Shiatsu Academy of Tokyo
After hearing so many good things about the shiatsu master from Oakes
I wanted to learn more about Saito and shiatsu in general
so I arranged to meet him at his school near Broadview station in the East York neighbourhood of Toronto
When our photographer (also a Japanese-born immigrant) begins taking a series of photos of him at work
Saito jokes that he was photographed only once before so many times — on his first birthday
“Today is my 61st birthday,” he adds with a laugh
His original plan had been to pursue journalism after completing his university degree in law
But his change of heart to become a shiatsu therapist firmed up during a visit to Toronto
when he was on a North American tour in the early 1970s
he offered demonstration sessions in the Yorkville neighbourhood in downtown Toronto
“At that time it was the ‘hippies’ town and it was accepting of the Eastern wave,” he recalls with a laugh
“They were happy to get my shiatsu treatment and one of them asked me ‘When are you coming to stay here forever?’ I didn’t think at that time it was going to come true.”

Aiko represented Japan at the Seoul 88 and Atlanta 96 Olympic Games
it was her work at Tokyo 2020 in which she represented the best of the sport – held at her home club of Enoshima
she worked tirelessly to provide support for all teams
promoting collaboration and fair play and ensuring all athletes got the chance to perform during the challenging circumstances of the pandemic
“I don’t call it hard work; I just enjoy it
I started sailing internationally in 1978 at the IYRU Women’s Worlds in the Netherlands – and have been to two Olympic Games as a sailor and four as Team Leader
and after that I helped towards sailing activities
so I wanted to give something back to sailing
and would like to thank everyone I have met in this sport
I hope everyone keeps sailing until you get much older
and then are able to give something back.”
Aiko has volunteered her time to work on World Sailing commissions
committees and working parties – ensuring the needs and interests of coaches and athletes are considered at the highest levels of the sport
She has also volunteered to support committees and commissions of the Japanese Sailing Federation since 2001
A post shared by World Sailing 🌎⛵️ (@worldsailingofficial)
Aiko supported World Sailing by working as the conduit between coaches and the International Federation and Paris 2024
helping both organisations understand the feedback and needs of the teams and the athletes
Aiko also consulted on coach technology and ensuring compliance from coaches with the spirit as well as the letter of the rules
double gold-medallist Shirley Robertson OBE described Aiko as “one of the best humans on the planet”
and judging by the reaction to the announcement that she had been chosen as this year’s winner it is hard to disagree

Donald Trump was not the only leader who defied expectations and secured reelection in November despite facing relentless media opposition
After stepping down as Hyogo governor in March amid accusations of power harassment and soliciting gifts
Motohiko Saito made a comeback with his reelection on November 17
For months, major media outlets, including Nippon TV, national broadcaster NHK, Shincho Shimbun, and Asahi Shimbun
dedicated hours each day to covering the allegations against Saito
their extensive coverage left the appearance of supporting the claimants
While Saito's victory raises serious questions about the influence of legacy media
Much has been made of the use of social media in Saito's reelection. Statistics reveal that 70% of voters in their teens and twenties backed him. NHK Party leader and popular YouTuber Takashi Tachibana publicly threw his support behind Saito in the final days of the campaign
attributing Saito's win largely to his adept use of social media also oversimplifies the story
Its broader significance stems from a very local historical and political context
After World War II
prefectural governors began to be elected through popular elections
Motohiko Kanai became the first elected Hyogo governor in 1962
Kanai's deputy governor at the time was Tokitada Sakai
who went on to win the next election in 1970
This marked the beginning of a loop where deputy governors would succeed governors
Toshizo Ido's five consecutive terms amounted to a 20-year administration.
Ido intended to have his deputy governor succeed him
but this plan fell apart in the 2021 gubernatorial election
marking the first change in administration in 59 years in Hyogo Prefecture.
Voters supported Motohiko Saito for his emphasis on economic revitalization and transparent governance
Many felt that Ido's administration lacked transparency in decision-making processes
particularly regarding public spending and the handling of major projects.
Saito consistently emphasized that Hyogo's finances were in critical condition
but the prefecture-owned land and forest assets were overvalued compared to their actual market prices
they created the illusion that everything was fine.
there was the issue of bureaucrats taking cushy post-retirement positions
many prefectural employees transitioned to external affiliated organizations
Taxpayers' money often funded the lucrative salaries
and pensions that came with these positions.
there was a plan to rebuild the prefectural government office at a cost of ¥100 billion JPY (over $642 million USD)
They lacked seismic (earthquake) reinforcements and still had squat toilets
Governor Saito criticized the new government office as wasteful and decisively cut such projects
documents were distributed anonymously to prefectural assembly members
The documents argued that Governor Motohiko Saito abused his power
They professed that when he visited disaster sites
he sought and received various favors.
Saito's camp promptly launched an investigation and found the document source
It turned out to be a former local official in the prefecture's Nishiharima District Administration Office
Key prefectural assembly members also got the anonymous documents
They decided to convene a special investigative committee under the Local Autonomy Act
Governor Saito and Deputy Governor Katayama were summoned
The committee interrogated them based on the anonymous document
Media reports expanded the intrigue with their reports. ANN (TV Asahi) reported on Governor Saito allegedly throwing an object at a senior official out of frustration
this is the only confirmed incident.
As for the allegations of receiving gifts from contractors
the committee reviewed audio data left by the now-deceased former Nishiharima District official
The recording included what seemed to be Governor Saito's voice discussing gifts of wine
and salt ― not exactly the makings of a slush fund scandal
the individuals who provided these gifts all denied being coerced by Saito into offering them
A more troubling discovery involved questionable records related to the late former Nishiharima official's affairs with ten female staff members of Hyogo Prefecture.
In tracing the source of the anonymous documents
Saito's team examined prefectural servers and digital records
which led to the discovery of the former official's laptop
it contained incriminating evidence against the former official
including photos and videos spanning a decade
The key issue is that this individual held a senior position with authority over personnel decisions
these issues were entirely overlooked during the committee sessions
When Katayama testified on May 31 and began discussing the computer's contents
Let's not discuss private matters," silencing Katayama
Before the committee could issue its conclusion
the Hyogo Prefectural Assembly unanimously passed a no-confidence resolution against Governor Saito
resulting in his automatic removal from office on September 30
he announced his candidacy for the upcoming election
Some observers have drawn comparisons between Saito's victory and the strong showing of a young
social media-savvy candidate in the Tokyo mayoral race in July
That candidate, Shinji Ishimaru, effectively harnessed social media to secure an impressive second-place finish behind third-term Governor Yuriko Koike
Media outlets hailed Ishimaru's social media strategy as groundbreaking
the media reacted as if he had mobilized an army of online conspiracy theorists
Now it was the media who were accusing Saito of election law violations
Putting aside the irritation of social media
the bias of traditional media had long been evident
Months of one-sided editorials and lengthy daytime news broadcasts made clear the media's preference for a local
Kazumi Inamura ran as an independent after serving three terms in the mayor's office
One of her notable achievements was significantly increasing the mayoral retirement allowance
it was ¥4.71 million (approximately $30,000)
it rose to ¥22.6 million ($145,000) — an increase of more than five times
Saito's reelection represents more than a clash between new and old media
The electorate voted for a reformer offering more transparency
especially when it comes to public spending
Saito has signaled he's prepared to take the heat and do just that

One day after Japanese qualifier Aoi Ito scored an upset against No.8 seed Elisabetta Cocciaretto to reach the Kinoshita Group Japan Open quarterfinals
The 18-year-old wild card also took out a seed to notch her first career Top 50 win
6-4 after saving two set points in the first set
Osaka: Scores | Draws | Order of play
The success of Saito and 20-year-old Ito, the two youngest Japanese players in the draw, is noteworthy for several reasons. Both are making their tour-level debuts this week. The last time a WTA quarterfinal lineup featured two players contesting their first main draw was all the way back at Marbella 2010, when qualifiers Simona Halep and Beatriz Garcia Vidagany both made the last eight.
It's also a promising sign for the future of Japanese tennis. This week marks the first time in five years two Japanese players have reached the quarterfinals of a tournament. In 2019, eventual champion Naomi Osaka and Misaki Doi both featured in the final eight in Osaka. And it's been 28 years since a quarterfinal lineup featured two under-21 Japanese players -- when 20-year-olds Miho Saeki and Yuka Yoshida both made that stage of Pattaya 1996.
Saito and Ito play contrasting styles of tennis. Ito's unorthodox mix of slices and finesse was inspired by Hsieh Su-Wei. Saito is the more conventional of the pair, with her neat groundstroke technique and superb redirections of pace on show against Avanesyan in what she described afterwards as "a perfect match."
Both had marked themselves out as ones to watch ahead of their breakthroughs this week. Saito is a former junior No.2 who reached three girls' doubles Grand Slam finals in 2023, and she has cut her ranking from No.364 at the start of the year to No.179 this week. Ito was ranked No.420 this time last year, and is now at No.188.
And they're not alone. Japanese juniors have been thriving recently. Sayaka Ishii, 19, and Ena Koike, 17, were also ranked in the junior Top 10 last year. When Ishii made her own WTA main-draw debut in August as a qualifier in Cleveland, she also turned heads by holding three match points on Katerina Siniakova before falling 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(5). Wakana Sonobe, 16, became the first Japanese girl to reach a junior singles Grand Slam final since 2010 at the US Open last month.

Harari and Saito discuss issues from their books

By Porter Anderson, Editor-in-Chief | @Porter_Anderson
This public event is part of a series of presentations called “Frankfurt Calling,” produced in in cooperation with the Goethe University Frankfurt and Süddeutsche Zeitung
Saito and Harari are said to be expected to talk about a question of whether “a system overhaul is the only way to a future worth living,” a proposition based more on Saito’s latest book than on Harari’s
listing Jürgen Neubauer and Andreas Wirthensohn as translators
is best known for his 2014 Sapiens: A Brief History of Mankind
The German-language edition, Systemsturz: Der Sieg der Natur über den Kapitalismus (System Overthrow: The Victory of Nature Over Capitalism) is published by DTV in a translation by Gregor Wakounig
The essential idea in Saito’s new book is that capitalism creates artificial scarcity by pursuing profit based on the value of products rather than their usefulness—and by putting perpetual growth above all else
As Christopher Beam wrote in May (Is America Ready for ‘Degrowth Communism’?) at The Atlantic
“The degrowth movement has swelled in recent years
particularly in Europe and in academic circles
Instead of finding carbon-neutral ways to power our luxurious modern lifestyles
degrowth would require us to surrender some material comforts
but he has put his own spin on it by adding the C word
As for what kind of ‘communism’ we’re talking about
Saito tends to emphasize workers’ cooperatives and generous social-welfare policies rather than top-down Leninist state control of the economy
He says he wants democratic change rather than revolution—though he’s fuzzy on how exactly you get people to vote for shrinkage.”
The event is set to see its doors open at 6:30 p.m. on Frankfurt Wednesday, and carries admission fees of €28 and €15 with fees (US$31 and US$16). Ticketing information is here

"My favorite memory is probably choosing to let this slide"
Nier director Yoko Taro kept the 2010 action-RPG's save-deleting final ending a secret from producer Yosuke Saito
and although it was revealed to him in the end
he let it slide because he assumed it was a nod to Dragon Quest's multiple endings
and at one point the pair is asked about their favorite memories
Taro rather amusingly recalled the higher ups from Square's US office telling him to "'make the main character's torso bigger
remembered learning about the game's true ending requiring players to delete their saves and play through the whole game again
Yoko kept the fact that the game deletes your save file a secret from me
but some other members of the team revealed this to me in secret
My favourite memory is probably choosing to let this slide
'It's probably just an homage to Dragon Quest!'"
I'm not sure why Saito thought this could've been a reference to Dragon Quest - as far as I know
there aren't any Dragon Quest games that make you delete your save for any reason - but he ultimately concluded: "Although apparently it wasn't an homage to Dragon Quest (laughs)."

Masatake Yamanaka, president of the Baseball Federation of Japan (BFJ), introduced former Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) pitcher Yuki Saito as the new Baseball5 Supervisor.
Born in 1988, Saito played 11 seasons for the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters. The right-hander pitched his last NPB game on October 16, 2021.
Saito led the Waseda Jutsugyo High School to the National High School title in 2006, earning MVP honours. Japanese media nicknamed him The Handkerchief Prince for his use of a handkerchief to wipe sweat from his face while on the mound.
"Yuki Saito has worked hard for the future of baseball since his retirement. To further promote Baseball5 in Japan, we expect Mr. Saito to take the initiative from the inside, not from the outside,” said Yamanaka.
The BFJ president added: "I hope Mr. Saito will also work hard to nurture players who will be competitive in the world."
Saito's interest in Baseball5 was sparked by an event held in 2023 as part of the Ball City Kiryu Project in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture
"I want to be be involved as a player in the future," Saito said.
Both Saito and President Yamanaka believe that Baseball5 "will revolutionize baseball in Japan, not only as an introduction to baseball, but also as a new discipline."
According to Saito, inclusion in elementary schools would boost Baseball5 development.
Saito has worked on a project to develop a new baseball facility. The venue is under construction and it will include a Baseball5 field.
