to John Coltrane’s drummer Elvin Ray Jones
National Sawdust has always existed as an “in-between” venue – they offer a mix of seated and standing-room shows, and a wide breadth of artists and genres. But sometimes the execution of staging doesn’t accurately match the style or “vibe” of the programming. This rang true for the opening performance by electronic musician Motion Graphics (aka Joe Williams)
the show began in a drone-y soundscape made from textural field recordings
and vocal samples (some by recognizable artists)
the height of the stage prevented ground floor attendees from understanding what instruments were being used
The hesitant audience finally felt compelled to applaud after the highlight of Williams’ set – a piece with sweeping orchestral arpeggiations and upbeat rhythmic patterns
there was a disconnection between this performance and the space
While it seemed to be a hybrid ambient DJ set
the entire mix wasn’t loud enough in the room
and Williams faded out each track rather than create blends
This failed to establish a “contract” between artist and audience
His final track ended with a spoken “thank you,” and he looked up to thank us too
When the stage reset between acts, so did the mood. I found myself highly interested in the Ableton session in view from Shimizu’s collaborator’s station – it was meticulously organized with about 50 track lanes, all with their own effect racks. The lights dimmed and Ray Kunimoto walked on stage and picked up a shō
The set began ceremoniously – beating clusters were drawn out of silences like melting icicles
Shimizu walked across the stage with his saxophone in the dark
and Shimizu’s saxophone exploded into the room
Shimizu juxtaposed rich melodies with urgent vocalizations
He and Kunimoto seamlessly married the instrumental performance with digital elements – octave displacers
and spidery grains coalesced to enhance the vibrancy of his saxophone and electronic wind instrument (EWI)
Kunimoto knew when to make swift transitions or sharp cut-offs
The connection shared between the two was mesmerizing
The duo traversed jazzier terrains with Shimizu taking masterfully developed solos; minimal and sentimental through-composed works for saxophone and piano; and dancier tracks comprising layers upon layers of live looping and percussion
There was always an experimental edge – once a pattern was established
he’d interject with shrieks or growls; bursts of improvisation; snippets of ASMR and ambient samples; and rhythmic hemiolas atop the grooves
Shimizu emits so much vitality through his music
He thanked and addressed us after each piece
connecting with us despite the physical elevation
The most unforgettable point of the evening was when he put down the horn and performed a song for us at the mic
We were conducted to clap in time together – miraculously we kept steady the entire six minutes
reading lyrics off of postcard-sized papers
he’d toss the paper into the crowd – several times they’d backspin and hit him on the way down
Shimizu kept us engaged for the entire performance
He told us “I love you guys” before a mindblowing virtuosic finale in which he pulled out all the stops
An unending stream of applause brought him back out for an encore – he dazzled us with one of his acclaimed Bach cello suite arrangements on saxophone with piano accompaniment
The theme of “cycles” was present on this first day of spring
It felt monumental for Shimizu to present solo work in the US for the first time – in three sold-out nights – after several reissues between 2015-2022 garnered new
This show was not a “rediscovery” or reinvention
but a reintroduction and well-earned recognition of the exceptional artistry that Shimizu has exhibited for over four decades

Tricycle is a nonprofit that depends on reader support
and deep listening advocate on the Buddhist threads that connect his vast and varied produce
Chee Shimizu has shaped Japan’s underground music scene for decades—as a DJ, curator, writer, producer, and record store owner. His cult book Obscure Sound
is one of the most important recent record guides to cover more experimental styles of music
ordered by categories such as “organic,” “psychedelic,” “spiritual,” “experimental,” “cosmic,” “meditative,” and “floating.” The revised edition also contains chapters on Japanese ambient and new age
These days, when he’s not DJing on the international club circuit, showcasing his extensive music collection on his monthly NTS radio show
or hosting his long-running audiophile “Sci-Fi” event in Tokyo
a quiet residential area on the western outskirts of the Japanese capital
whose spiritual practice deeply informs his musical activities
Tricycle author Stephan Kunze caught up with the tastemaker about his journey
How did you originally get in touch with music
Then I learned about the acid jazz movement in London
and others were leading the club jazz scene [in Tokyo]
I began to visit their events and buy records that they were playing: hard bop
Your style of DJing has been described as “free-form.” You say that you do not intend to belong to any scene but feel connected to many scenes
It has been over thirty years since I started DJing
I have played many different styles of music
They are people from very different scenes
but I am interacting with people from different scenes
and if my personality matches what they are looking for
Reconstructions by Chee Shimizu + miku-mari
When you say “deep listening,” are you referring to the practice developed by the late composer Pauline Oliveros? No, I discovered and practiced the concept of [what I call] deep listening through my own musical activities. My practice originated from a regular party at the listening bar SHeLTeR in Hachioji
It’s been more than twenty years since I first DJ’ed there
SHeLTeR had an environment well-suited for so-called audiophiles
The sound was truly special—an experience unlike anything I had encountered elsewhere
I became deeply engaged in crafting a narrative for the night
I did this alongside my dearest friend and the greatest DJ
Listening carefully changed something in me
The term “deep listening” is something we adopted simply because we had no other name for what we were practicing
I was surprised to learn that Pauline Oliveros had already established the concept long ago
experienced a similar feeling through music
I am intrigued and would like to study her work further
You’ve curated several compilations of Japanese ambient and experimental music. How did you get into this style long before its resurgence in the streaming age? After I started my record shop
I was sharing music with friends in Europe
and they asked me for interesting music from Japan
I started looking for Japanese music in different genres
We went to every single record shop in Tokyo’s suburbs and found a lot of music we didn’t know about
Japanese ambient was still cheap at the time
We relied solely on our intuition and ears
Your record shop, Organic Music, has existed since 2008. What are some of the key principles in running the store? My first priority is to share the excitement about great music, that deep emotion with others. I named the shop Organic Music because I was fascinated by Don Cherry’s music. I was very fond of his album Brown Rice
The artwork was a quilted piece of art created by his wife
This seemed fitting to describe my musical vision
Just as Cherry traveled the world in the late 1960s and 1970s
absorbing folk music from different countries
playing together and communicating through music
I wanted to share a sense of music with people through my record shop and DJing
The Cherrys were both practitioners of Vajrayana Buddhism
And I know you also have talked about how Buddhism influences your artistry
When did you first get in touch with Buddhism
people customarily engage with Buddhism and Shinto in various aspects of life
and even those without religious faith have opportunities to visit temples and shrines
people interact with these traditions without necessarily understanding their essence
but I have experienced going to temples with my family for memorial services and chanting sutras since I was a child
I only began to develop an interest in Buddhism after becoming an adult
How did that deeper interest and connection arise
If you are interested in something and pursue it in depth
the Italian dance music of the late 1970s and 1980s
[Because of this lack of interest] I didn’t get the chance to DJ in public for a long time
I blamed others—I thought people who didn’t understand my music had no taste
When I started DJing in the style of deep listening
I began to think more deeply about music and sound
It was around that time that I became more committed to Buddhist thought
And I have also come to recognize my own weaknesses
I have learned to appreciate the cooperation and help of those around me
Are you part of any specific Buddhist sect? I do not belong to any specific sect, but my family follows the Soto school, and they are parishioners of the Zenkyu-in Temple in Matsumoto
This has been the case at least since my grandparents’ generation
Which Buddhist teachings have enriched your life the most
That nothing in the universe exists in isolation
This is something I learned from the late professor Hajime Nakamura
“Our connection to the universe is different for each of us
If we become aware that we are receiving that greatness
the path we are meant to live will naturally become clear.” I also learned from the writings of the late Japanese philosopher
“Somoku kokudo shikkai jobutsu” means that all things have buddha-nature—not only humans
These teachings form the foundation of my way of thinking
By avoiding a binary oppositional structure and walking the middle path
I strive to objectively grasp the essence of things and maintain a state of inner calm in a world of overwhelming information
La Calle Roja by Pablo Color
I listen to people and learn about their way of thinking
And I always keep my back straight and maintain good posture
I make an effort to keep my body in a natural state
The mind and spirit are born from the body
How does your relationship to Buddhism inform your DJing and music practice
I have learned to contemplate and recognize the existence of music and sound more deeply
and I reflect this learning in my musical activities
The way I think about and treat music and sound has changed
I feel a stronger sense of connection with people
I think I am now able to play music in a more natural state of mind and have a vibrational communion with the audience
This is a quote from the Dhammapada that I also learned from the late professor Hajime Nakamura: “Those who learn little grow old like cattle
There has long been a fusion of Japanese traditional instruments and Western music
but we are now attempting new ways to connect this past with the present and the future

“Many meaningful bills addressing reform were not even heard by our currently Democratic Party-controlled Legislature.”
Civil Beat asked candidates to answer some questions about where they stand on various issues and what their priorities will be if elected
The following came from Garner Shimizu, Republican candidate for State House District 32, which covers Fort Shafter, Moanalua, Aliamanu, Foster Village and portions of Aiea and Halawa. His opponent is Democrat Micah Aiu
Go to Civil Beat’s Election Guide for general information, and check out other candidates on the General Election Ballot
What is the biggest issue facing your district
I believe cost of living is the biggest issue facing our district
This problem affects our quality of life with manifested outcomes of crime
deterioration of family time and relationships and a major cause of kamaaina leaving our state
This contributes and causes a loss of hope
identity and purpose which feeds and perpetuates these problems
Organize an emergency coalition to work with all stakeholders (city
financial and research institutions) to identify
streamline and correct the factors that impact housing costs
Adjustments and improvements to building codes and permitting process
financing and rental arrangements and other bureaucratic obstacles are needed
Review the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands policy and processing to expedite award to eliminate the waiting list
How can Hawaii be “Hawaii” with no Hawaiians
Long overdue changes 100 years later for blood quantum reduction
together with land ownership and inheritance rights and additional seed money award are needed to give our host culture back their soul and identity
These are idealistic ideas that will need great cooperation and willingness of higher levels of government above my representative position to actually become reality
How do you feel about the massive income tax cut just approved by the Legislature and the governor
Do you have any concerns that it will force reductions in state services in the years to come
There should be no concerns because it should be expected that this legislative decision
has been carefully vetted and supported by accounting facts and data
Our Democratic Party-controlled state has finally taken positive action to help improve the tax burden that placed us
as the fourth-highest-taxed state in the nation
We can only wonder why it took so long to provide any kind of reasonable adjustment
This type of action is in line with my platform and belief in conservative principles to promote economic growth
It is likely that these tax cuts can help generate more state tax revenue by encouraging economic growth and spending; and maintain or increase the taxpayer base
for an improved cost of living will help prevent the exodus of some kamaaina
and at the same time encourage the return of some who can now make ends meet
What is also important is the need to examine where we can reduce costs by thoroughly reviewing all departments
to identify where improvements can be made to achieve this
Hawaii continues to struggle with pay-to-play politics and corruption in government
What meaningful reforms do you think would change state government for the better
8 and 9 are also related and expands the discussion on this
we can establish modest campaign spending limits so campaigns and voters can then focus on the character and substance of the candidate
persuasion and maneuvering money-driven structures can deliver
We need to expand donor restrictions from companies that are awarded government contracts to include their officers and immediate family members of such companies
and also apply this to those with government grants
Many meaningful bills addressing reform were not even heard by our currently Democratic Party-controlled Legislature
Candidates often say they will support reform proposals in the Legislature
And yet major reform proposals don’t pass
Will you back good-government proposals even if it means going against leadership
If it’s factually confirmed and the right thing to do
A major objective for me getting elected is being part of the decision-making process that will take the necessary action and do the right thing for the people
It is difficult to have meaningful reform when decision-makers who benefit from the current setup are the very one sthat need to make the necessary changes
There is not “balance” or accountability with currently only six Republican representatives versus 45 Democratic representatives
Do you support comprehensive public financing of elections for candidates who choose to participate
Especially for first-time candidates and non-incumbents
this will be a great option and provision that I believe will significantly encourage and increase the number and quality of candidates running for office
it would be better and more fair if everyone were on the same playing field regarding campaign funding and limits
to eliminate money as a major factor and driver in public decisions and voting to elect our leaders
I have heard legislators comment they have over $100,000 in their accumulated campaign accounts
Reviewing the Campaign Spending Commission candidate reports
amounts given and relationships that are in place or trying to be forged
the influence of money whether in front-end donations
producing compromised outcomes and destroying public trust
A public review of my campaign spending report will show that my donors are friends
family and supporters with no special interest connections
who believe it is time for meaningful change
Hawaii is the only Western state without a statewide citizens initiative process
Good analysis and careful investigation of results from other states using this initiative will be helpful and needed before formal approval
Thanks to their campaign war chests and name familiarity
incumbents are almost always reelected in Hawaii legislative races
Should there be term limits for state legislators
as there are for the governor’s office and county councils
Term limits in place for the offices mentioned should apply to our Legislature
consolidation of power and influence accumulated by career politicians establishing involved relationships with competing special interests creates pressure to lead one away from their fundamental purpose of doing what’s best to serve the people
not all elected officials are influenced by money and become corrupt
based on the history of exposed official wrongdoing
recent corruption cases and others that may be operating undetected
we see how monetary influence and gain takes over
This confirms there is enough of a problem that it should be and needs to be addressed with corrections to protect us put in place
Someone who is more concerned with getting reelected and considering special interest donors will not be energized and motivated to always learn and pursue better ways to help the people
Term limits would be a safeguard and deterrent for unethical relationships and hidden influences that could be developed and maintained; as well as introduce new fresh energetic individuals who serve selflessly for the people
hard-working legislators serving the public will could serve in other positions once term-limited
What will you do to ensure accountability at the Legislature
Do you support ideas such as requiring the Sunshine Law to apply to the Legislature or banning campaign contributions during session
At the core of my commitment to serve as an elected official entrusted by the people
I will abide by my sacred oath to serve the people
and not put myself in compromising situations or positions where I have a conflict of interest
Conflicts of interest need to be self-declared or identified
resulting in disqualification from involvement or participating in any way
These conflicts need to be officially announced
and the House speaker and Senate president should not be able to dismiss unilaterally
Violators should be discharged from the Legislature and prosecuted accordingly
The Sunshine Law and open records laws should apply to the Legislature as well
I support banning campaign contributions during the session
I would ideally like to see set campaign funding limits to greatly reduce soliciting donations
eliminate the power and influence of money on any candidate’s campaign and future service and level the playing field for all participants
Comprehensive public financing of campaigns as discussed in Question No
How would you make the Legislature more transparent and accessible to the public
Opening conference committees to the public
Stricter disclosure requirements on lobbying and lobbyists
How could the Legislature change its own internal rules to be more open
There’s an impractical overload of information
Reduce the number of bills each legislator can introduce and extend the session length for more time for the public to review
A priority list should be established before the session
with every bill introduced addressing a listed priority
Every bill becomes meaningful deserving a hearing
and not killed at the committee chair’s discretion
Conference committees should be open to the public
Impose stricter disclosure requirements on lobbying and lobbyists
and limit all contact and communications from them to a fully publicly transparent written testimony or recorded sessions
Eliminate legislative procedures that allows “gut and replace” manipulation of bills
The practice of anonymous “by request” bill introductions should be eliminated
Regular audits of pertinent information will help all government officials and departments to be accountable and transparent
can expose conflicts of interest and highlight any corruption
to be fully transparent and accessible to the public
helping educate and inform the people with simple and clear communication of decisions being made
Media can help be a top contributor to written and video formats the public can easily understand and digest
Many people have talked about diversifying the local economy for many years now
and yet Hawaii is still heavily reliant on tourism
should be done differently about tourism and the economy
While tourism will remain an important contributor to our economy and workforce
to prevent irreparable harm to our environment
we need ongoing and even new efforts to better identify and manage detrimental effects to our aina and quality of living
We should not and cannot be so heavily dependent on this industry and absolutely need to expand our economic base to become more self-sufficient
attract and recruit viable alternative industries by offering incentives such as tax breaks
land and workforce development arrangements
higher income-producing businesses and employers
Dedicated ag land needs to be protected for diversified agricultural such as produce
We should investigate other new viable crops such as industrial hemp
We can emulate Singapore’s shipping port success by first securing a Jones Act exemption
then negotiating agreements to allow expanded free trade zone capacity at Honolulu Harbor or Kalaeloa/Barbers Point
An estimated 60% of Hawaii residents are struggling to get by
a problem that reaches far beyond low-income and into the middle class
What ideas do you have to help the middle class and working families who are finding it hard to continue to live here
Affordable housing costs at the core of this problem is discussed in Question No
and actual specific progress and effectiveness of this bill needs monitoring and confirmation to keep initiative moving forward
and continuing to add pieces where it is falling short and needs strengthening
we can stimulate business with the various stakeholders coming together to identify and correct factors and obstacles that impede our business climate
Government can and should promote and assist the economy by removing and reducing oppressive
identify and correct mismanagement and unwise spending and expose and clean up deficiencies
This can eliminate and reduce waste and inefficiency to better utilize taxpayer funds and reduce or limit taxes
Practically all products are shipped to us
I would like to see an exemption from the Jones Act
to monitor and see if this shipping alternative can reduce transportation and consumer costs

COPPER MOUNTAIN — The first day of finals at the 2024 Toyota U.S
Grand Prix on Friday at Copper Mountain Resort did not disappoint in the slightest.
After athletes were forced to sweat it out in qualifiers on Wednesday
riders could finally take a deep breath and let it fly in the men’s and women’s snowboard halfpipe finals
With weekend and holiday crowds beginning to converge at Copper
the bottom of the halfpipe was packed as people looked into the sun and watched the women’s snowboard halfpipe final get underway
After taking first in her heat at qualifiers on Wednesday
two-time Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim laid down a run littered with style and skill
fellow Californian Maddie Mastro and Steamboat’s Maddy Schaffrick took their first runs
The run earned 77. In her second consecutive World Cup final after nearly a decade away from competition
Schaffrick landed a backside 540 and crippler with a nose grab before falling near the middle of the pipe.
Japan’s Sara Shimizu — only 15 years old — led the field with a score of 90.50
and China’s Xuetong Cai maintained third (85.50)
With the trio of Americans all out of a podium spot
the athletes tried to put together better executed runs on their second trips down the pipe
Schaffrick strung together a clean run from top to bottom
Kim also managed to drastically improve her score
moving her into fourth to begin the final round of runs
Taking a hard slam in qualifiers on Wednesday
Mastro chose to not take her second or third run
although impressive, did not garner a better score than her second run
resulting in a fourth-place finish (86.75).
Shimizu was crowned the Grand Prix champion with a score of 90.50
Schaffrick finished a spot behind Kim in fifth with a top run score of 84.50 and Mastro took sixth (77)
the men’s snowboard halfpipe final took place simultaneously alongside the women’s
Making up the 10-man final were three Americans in Idaho’s Chase Josey
After taking eighth at last year’s U.S
soared into the halfpipe and performed a frontside 720
The run earned the Winter Park native a score of 58.75
Okesson quickly followed Wolle down the pipe
putting down a frontside 900 with a melon grab
the two-time Olympian landed a switch backside 900 and a frontside double 1260 to earn a score of 67
The fury of Americans were followed by some of the most decorated and talented riders in the world
including 2022 Olympic silver medalist Scotty James and reigning Olympic champion Ayumu Hirano
the Australian flew high out of the pipe with a switch McTwist before landing a switch double McTwist on his final hit of the pipe. Earning a score of 87.75
the impressive run shot James to the top of the rankings
Japan’s Hirano attempted to threaten James at the top of the results but fell midway through his first run
With none of the Americans on the podium after the first round
The run bumped his score to a 70.75 to put himself on the podium for the time being
He remained on the podium until Japan’s Yuto Totsuka put down a massive run that was scored at a 92
Korea’s Chaeun Lee pushed Wolle further down in the rankings by landing back-to-back 1440s that wowed the crowd and the judges
Lee bumped into the third as the competition entered its final round
landing similar tricks to his first two attempts
he did not improve upon his second run score of 70.75
finishing as the top American in seventh place
“It was really just an all around amazing day,” he said
and I landed all of my competition runs to a strategy we had already performed
Getting a top eight is really huge because I need two of them to make the U.S
I have a couple more contests where I am going to do my best to get into the top eight.”
James put it all on the line on his final run
which featured a technical switch backside double cork
but it was not enough to shoot over Totsuka’s third-run score of 94.75
As the final three competitors took to the pipe
the competition ramped up to another level
Japan’s Ruka Hirano landed a clean run to move into second with a score of 92.75
With his back against the wall after two falls
Ayumu Hirano landed a clean run of his own
Hirano made a triple cork and a 1440 look effortless
The stoic performance was enough for the 26-year-old rider to shoot from ninth to first with a score of 97
the Japanese sweep of the podium was complete
Hirano won the competition thanks to his last run (97)

So to Speak hones in on a Filipina American college student
Spurred on by an assignment from her professor to create art about sex and power
Morena revisits the past through her heritage
and her own sexual herstory to assess her present realities and create new futures for herself and other Asian American women
By making a “house of sexuality,” she creates the art of sex
and recognizes the traumas and joys of brown girlhood and the power of her voice and her education
A penetrating look at the experience and questions facing a young woman of color coming of age within the setting of a university
Shimizu’s film strives to represent the struggles many women face on their sexual and educational journeys en route to claiming autonomy and sovereignty
gender and sexuality simultaneously captures the importance of sisterhood and the important act of claiming one’s education and voice.“As a filmmaker and scholar of race
particularly of global Asian/American popular culture and the representations of people of color in western cinema
I amplify subjugated perspectives and create new narratives,” says Shimizu
Based on the poem that inventoried my sexual herstory at the time
It is personal in the sense of my own artfully documented narrative joining my training and expertise as an ethnographer
historian and maker of images for the past 30 plus years.”
So to Speak was filmed entirely on the campus of UC Santa Cruz and most of the cast and crew are UC Santa Cruz undergraduate and graduate students

Yuko Shimizu started working for a company called Sanrio
which specialised in rubber sandals decorated with strawberry prints
Eager to create another best-selling product
the company started hiring lots of young illustrators to come up with a new winning design
Yuko and her fellow illustrators had a simple brief centred around the word 'kawaii'
(Photo: A replica of the first ever Hello Kitty product
Her design – a white cat with a red bow in its hair – only took a couple of days to complete
Yuko asked her assistant to give it the seal of approval
female assistant and I showed her both the front and side profiles
and asked which she thought was cute,” Yuko told Witness History
“She said she thought the side profile was the cutest.”
the Hello Kitty design far outsold the others
quickly becoming Sanrio’s fastest selling product
The inspiration for Hello Kitty came from Yuko’s childhood
I got a small white kitten from my father for a birthday present,” she said
Sanrio have provided a detailed backstory for Hello Kitty
Hello Kitty’s real name is Kitty White and she was born in England
Instead she’s an eight-year-old girl and she has her own pet cat of her own called Charmmy Kitty

Tokyo faces Shimizu S-Pulse in Meiji Yasuda J1 League Sec
In the previous match at Japan National Stadium against Gamba Osaka
Tokyo scored three goals in the final stages to secure their first victory in nine games since Sec
Riding the momentum of consecutive home wins
Returning to the basics of football by not losing battles for the ball
they want to show play calculated from the goal
transitioning from solid defense to effective attack
facing a tight schedule with only three days between matches
Kosuke SHIRAI took the right wing-back position
while the double pivot in midfield consisted of Takahiro KO and Kento HASHIMOTO
Teruhito NAKAGAWA was deployed as the right inside half
who has started four consecutive official matches
is expected to challenge the J1 youngest goal scorer record
who made a strong impact coming off the bench in the previous match
who has continued to play aggressively pushing forward
Both are anticipated to be brought on at crucial moments in the game
The game on the first day of Golden Week kicked off at 13:09 under clear skies at Ajinomoto Stadium
1st HALF—Displayed coordinated offense and defense but conceded a regrettable goal just before the end of the first half
Tokyo maintained their traditional 3-4-2-1 formation
adopted a new 4-2-3-1 setup with Uno positioned as center back
Tokyo adjusted cautiously while observing Shimizu's approach
leading to a game where they probed for attacking opportunities
who struggled to create substantial attacks
had a big chance in the 16th minute of the first half from a simple play
When Shirai sent a soft feed forward from the right rear
Marcelo RYAN skillfully positioned his body to intercept as the opposing player trapped the ball while retreating near the penalty area
and struck a right-footed shot to the near side
and Nakagawa tried to capitalize on the rebound
Kitahara carried the ball vertically on the left side after cutting it with a high press
and sent it to the center where Taka ran in
Although the shot went straight to the opposing goalkeeper
it was a scene that showed a good transition from solid defense to effective attack
Tokyo is required to devise ways to break through the opponent's defensive network
Player Taka drops back to the last line while Kanta DOI opens up on the right side
and Shirai drops back to right side back to push Keita ENDO on the opposite side
attempting to create gaps in the opponent's formation with a flexible system
with multiple players actively engaging with the ball
a penalty kick was awarded after player Inui was fouled inside the penalty area
conceding the opening goal in first-half injury time
and the team went into halftime trailing by one point
2nd HALF—Finding a way through side attacks but lacking a decisive blow
aiming to create gaps in the opponent's defense with precise positioning and a robust attack
pressed into Shimizu's territory from kickoff and showed their intent to counterattack early on with a long shot from player Hashimoto
Shimizu continued to dominate by controlling the ball and attacking
They committed multiple players to the ball side
Tokyo also tried to find attacking opportunities by connecting passes in the back line
but struggled against the opponent's compact defense and could not advance beyond the middle zone
made a double substitution at the 15th minute of the second half
replacing Nakagawa and Kitahara with Sato and Tawara Tsukida
Left winger Endo shifted centrally depending on the situation
while Tawara Tsukida opened up on the left
dynamically changing positions to add variation to the attack
Teppei OKA's long feed found Shirai on the right side
but the impact was weak and the ball narrowly missed to the left of the goal
Tokyo continued to control the game with plays like OKA's half-volley
Shimizu regained their rhythm and increased their possession
who scored a super goal in the previous match
but the opponent cuts off the dribbling routes both vertically and horizontally
advancing near the goal line and delivering crosses
making every effort to get involved in scoring opportunities
a switch was made from Anzai and Hashimoto to Seiji KIMURA and Keigo HIGASHI
The formation was changed to place KIMURA in the center of the three-back line
at the 34th minute immediately after the substitution
we allowed player Inui to dribble through on a counterattack
carrying the ball into the penalty area and scoring a goal
At a time when we wanted to strengthen our counterattack momentum
maintained a high position and showed an attacking stance by delivering crosses
and the team struggled to create clear scoring opportunities
After the 5 minutes of displayed second-half additional time
We were unable to present a victory to the blue and red fans and supporters who packed Ajinomoto Stadium
Although it was Golden Week and many fans and supporters came to the stadium to support us
I think we played a very disappointing game with little to watch
Q: You mentioned that there was little to watch in the match
What do you think was the main reason for that?A
numerically there may have been moments when we controlled the ball
but it was a game where the attacking focus was mostly not aligned
Using long balls to advance effectively is of course acceptable
the change in approach made it difficult to coordinate our focus
but the final quality in those moments was never high
which also led to some counterattack situations
whether it was controlling the ball or creating time
I think Shimizu S-Pulse had the edge in the quality of individual plays
but today we couldn't demonstrate them properly
resulting in a game with few highlights to watch
Please tell us the purpose of the player substitution.A
while there was an intention to bring in players who can effectively challenge from the front line
the players who originally played in the match also have such characteristics
but the responsibility was entrusted to those waiting for their next opportunity
The reason for changing the defensive midfielder and center back was to create an advantage at the back by putting players in their natural positions
which would allow for smooth distribution to the front line and apply more pressure on the inside
but the quality was not demonstrated at the crucial moment
when the area in front of the goal was well defended
we could not show the quality of varied attacks
such as middle-range shots from negative angles or other tactical variations to unsettle the opponent and finish the play in this game
and considering what Coach Rikizo MATSUHASHI has been working on at Albirex Niigata
How does the coach perceive this?As you mentioned
we were able to demonstrate strengths in those areas
Even though we faced difficulties once the season started and struggled to secure wins
there is a challenge in aligning our focus on the players' courage and their continuous efforts to try
while not getting distracted by various factors and figuring out how to make the best use of each player's strengths
Since we are using a new system starting this season
It might be enough if someone says these ten-plus rounds are sufficient
I personally feel the difficulties caused by injuries and the coordination and combination challenges
we try to provide the players with as clear information as possible so they can approach the games confidently
I believe that my role in making adjustments
placing the right people in the right positions
and the timing of these decisions is a major responsibility I must take on
There have been many moments in the past when this coordination fit perfectly
there is some frustration as those aspects are not coming through well
and I think this has caused a bit of instability
As the number of times you appear in front of the goal and your coordination with teammates gradually improve
everyone is eagerly awaiting your first league goal
Not only the forwards including myself but also the defenders
we want to further strengthen our teamwork as a whole to aim for goals
and it is frustrating that we have not been able to score in the league for a long time
Under the guidance of head coach Rikizo MATSUHASHI
the team is reorganizing the style of football we want to express
and I myself aim to score my first league goal of the season in a way that fits the football everyone on the pitch should strive for
There were many scenes where the attack struggled against Shimizu S-Pulse's solid defense.A
The coach asked us not to limit ourselves to short passes at our feet
but to look for timing to play balls behind the defensive line and to make runs into the space behind
I made few runs into the space behind the opposing defenders and was unable to express the plays that were expected of me well
I want to contribute to the team quickly with plays that break through this difficult situation
Q: I think the opponent's defense has become tighter as the matches progress when playing in the lone striker position
How has your awareness regarding teamwork with your teammates and utilizing those around you increased?A
playing at the top position requires connecting various balls to the attack
you need to decide whether to head it to a teammate or control it yourself
if your teammates do not fully trust the play you decide on
If they trust my play and make runs or receive passes
and if the ball is held in advanced positions for longer
I believe not only I but the entire team will score more goals
we succeeded to some extent by focusing on long balls that utilized Marcelo RYAN and Keito Sato
we planned to start the game using a similar approach
the team was not aligned on whether to connect passes or to kick the ball
resulting in a consistently disjointed game flow
it became difficult to break down the opponent.A
I think that was almost everything in today's match
I believe we hardly gave the opponent any chances in the first half
Shimizu S-Pulse gained confidence and were able to play well in the second half
I think we made the game more difficult for ourselves towards the end of the first half
What do you think were the factors that caused the mismatch?A
the team could not unify the decisions to kick or to pass
there was a clear intention to kick and push forward
but I think we need to align our common understanding about the exact moment to transition to the next phase
Can you view identifying the issues positively?A
that is something we have been working on continuously
it will just be the same repeated issue every time
so I want to be able to make more improvements during the match
is it necessary for you to give instructions and communicate proactively?A
I think it becomes necessary as long as I play in the back
but I believe I have to do my best wherever I'm placed

Shimizu-san helps curious diners navigate the wild world of Jiro
My first contact with Shimizu-san came online
Known as the “Ramen Consultant,” he accompanies nervous diners to one of the most extreme styles of ramen imaginable: Ramen Jiro.
Before we get into Ramen Jiro and its eccentricities
it’s important to note that Shimizu-san offers his consultancy service entirely for free
All he asks is that you cover his train fare if he has to travel far
Why would someone need a man to accompany them for a bowl of ramen
The reason is that this style of ramen isn’t your typical bowl of noodles. It’s Japan’s heavyweight ramen champ. The yokozuna of ramen
The average noodle portion clocks in at 300 grams for the small size
each slice of pork is larger than a deck of playing cards.
The bowl arrives stacked with bean sprouts
you risk invoking the wrath of the master and the Jiroians around you
I have even heard that the staff who work at Jiro restaurants are called martyrs
due to the intense physical toll of regularly eating this style of ramen and the high-pressure environment they endure
there’s a logical reason why a man would offer to accompany people to experience this intimidating subculture of Japanese food
Shimizu-san has been acting as a ramen consultant for around five years and continues to make time for it despite his busy work schedule
and we planned to meet at the famous Jiro restaurant in Mita
You can see Jiroians lining up outside the shop as early as 8 a.m
we were among the last 10 people to get a bowl
and this is why many of Shimizu-san’s customers are women
It can be intimidating to enter a ramen shop where you’re the only female
The inability to finish what you order may also bring judgmental looks from those around you.
One thing I love about Shimizu-san is his humility
He patiently explains the ticket machine and tells you what he likes to order and why
even if it‘s just because they want a companion while eating a bowl of ramen
And that bowl of ramen just happens to be one of the most hardcore styles out there.
the first choice you have is how many grams of noodles you want when you order
It’s recommended to get the smallest size available
you can hand them your ticket and ask for men hanbun — half the size of a small
it’s still the size of a regular bowl of noodles
you patiently wait for your ramen to be served
“Niniku irimasu ka?” — which literally translates to
“Do you want garlic?” But this question is more than just a simple yes or no
It actually opens up a massive dialogue tree about how much garlic
back fat and soy sauce seasoning you’d like in your bowl
plus what kind of vegetables you want.
The easiest response is “sono mama” — meaning the normal amount
that normal amount differs depending on the shop
This is why Shimizu-san is such a helpful companion
He provides clarity on what to expect at each specific location
The broth is so rich that they don’t even give you a spoon.
I found out that his customers are a range of all ages and genders
The vast majority of Japanese people find eating Jiro-style ramen intimidating due to the strict rules
the quiet atmosphere and the pressure inside the shop.
Common fears include not understanding the rules as well as the large portion sizes
Shimizu-san listens to customers’ worries
That is why he gets a lot of repeat customers.
When asked why he continues to offer his service for free
he responded with a smile and said he genuinely loves to spread awareness about the unique experience of Jiro ramen
Curious about whether shop owners or other customers provide feedback on his role in guiding newcomers through the strict environment
I learned that the ramen shops have no negative reactions to his tours
They actually see it as free marketing.
He remarked that issues would only arise if someone profited directly from Jiro-style ramen
Shimizu-san is a revolutionary for transforming one of Japan’s most intense dining experiences into an opportunity to bridge barriers and build positive relationships
Some shops leave them almost raw in the center
allowing the starch to continue absorbing into the soup
that many shops don’t even provide a spoon
The sharp shoyu base practically begs for a ladle of optional pork back fat to mellow it out.
it has a distinct barnyard funk; a pungent ripeness that comes from cooking the entire pig over high heat
helping newcomers navigate the subtle differences between Jiro branches and their unique styles

This research study inspects the effectiveness of synchronization methods such as active control and backstepping control from systematic design procedures of a synchronized Shimizu–Morioka system for the same parameter
It aimed to achieve synchronization between the state variables of two identical Shimizu–Morioka chaotic systems by defining the proposed varieties of the error dynamics coefficient matrix
this study also aimed to designed an active controller that enables the synchronization of these systems
The use of designed recursive backstepping nonlinear controllers was based on the Lyapunov function
it also demonstrated the stability of the synchronization of the nonlinear identical Shimizu–Morioka system
The new virtual state variable and establishment of Lyapunov functionals are used in the backstepping controller to stabilize and reduce errors between the Master (MS)/Drive (DS) systems
the complexity of active controllers is verified to be such that the designed controller's effectiveness based on backstepping is attainable in engineering applications
numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed synchronization strategy with the Runge–Kutta (RK-4) algorithm of fourth order through MatLab Simulink
Chaos synchronization is an attractive science and technology phenomenon involving various real-life processes, and in a physical system, it appears challenging. In the 1990s [21], Pecora and Carroll [22] explored synchronization techniques for two chaotic systems with known parameters and different initial conditions
Researchers began studying chaotic systems' synchronization procedures broadly and intensively around this time
The master system-drive (MS-DS) system or response-slave (RS-SS) formalization is used in the majority of chaos synchronization techniques
if one chaotic system is designated as the MS and another chaotic system as the DS
is to use the output of the MS to control the DS
so that it asymptotically tracks the output of the master system
We successfully developed both methods for effectively controlling chaotic systems
recursive backstepping controllers for global asymptotic synchronization between two chaotic systems can be designed
The main novelty of this research is that the eigenvalues of the coefficient matrix of error state variables are adjustable to achieve the desired synchronization time in the suggested active synchronization control strategy
The active control technique requires sequential controllers in all of the equations in the system
but the backstepping approach just needs a single sequential controller
The second method provides a useful contrast
in that it offers superior performance while being much easier to implement
We believe that the recommended control strategies will assist in bringing certain chaotic or hyperchaotic systems into synchronization
given that the majority of chaotic systems in nature have distinct structures
The control of chaos in the Shimizu–Morioka system is investigated using the active and backstepping control methods and compares the simulation results in the effectiveness of the two strategies
we explain the conceptual basis of our article
The Section 2 describes the Shimizu–Morioka system with chaotic dynamical behavior
we originate the theory and formulation for the active control procedure of the Shimizu–Morioka system with known parameters
Section 4 presents the backstepping synchronization of the identical Shimizu–Morioka chaotic systems with known parameters
A comparison of the outcomes of numerical simulations is covered in Section 5 which deals with a comparison of the numerical simulation results
The key results of this article are summarized in Section 6
The Shimizu–Morioka chaotic system (Equation 1) is a novel system that we examine in this article, in which chaotic dynamical behavior is described by Shil'nikov [27]:
b are constant parameters around state variables x
The Shimizu–Morioka autonomous three-dimensional system exhibits a chaotic behavior with considered parameters a = 0.81 and b = 0.375
Three separated equilibrium points, (0,0,0),(b,0,1), and (-b,0,1), exist in the system (Equation 1) if b ≥ 0. There is only one individual equilibrium point. (0, 0, 0) for b < 0 [46]
For numerical simulations, we use the chaotic system's initial values of Equation (1) which are Xi(0) = (0.1, 0.2, 0.1);∀(X = (x, y, z), i = 1) And Xj(0) = (−0.5, 0.4, 0.5);∀(X = (x, y, z), j = 2). Figures 1, 2 clarify the two-dimensional projections of the Shimizu–Morioka Systems (Equation 1) on (x
x) space projections for various initial values
As the behavior of a chaotic system depends strongly on its initial conditions
the systems (Equation 1) illustrate significantly different trajectories for MS and DS chaotic autonomous systems
Although MS and DS began with approximately the same values in phase space
Notwithstanding the fact that every MS–DS system has a unique attractor in phase space
The chaotic attractor of the Shimizu–Morioka dynamical system on the x − y
which are shown in the 2D phase portrait for the Master system
which are shown in the 2D phase portrait for the Drive system
The times gone by before reaching synchronization states for the Master system (x1, y1, z1) and the Drive system (x2, y2, z2) are shown in Figure 3

When MS–DS systems have identical parameters
synchronization via active control is effective
Assume the existence of an (MS–DS) system as
Where x=(x1,y1,...,z1)T∈Rn and y=(x2,y2,...,z2)T∈Rn are the state vectors of the two systems
(M1,M2)∈Rn×Rn are constant matrix
which designated the coefficient matrix with negative eigenvalues and g(x)
g(y) is a sequential nonlinear function and the control function u(t)=(ui(t))∈Rn
which depends on state variables and needs to be calculated where i = (1
the two equivalent chaotic system (Equations 2
3) are globally asymptotically synchronized
If a suitable controller u(t) fulfills the condition limt→ ∞‖Y(t)-X(t)‖ = limt→ ∞‖ei‖= 0
3) are calculated using the error function defined by ei = yi − xi
the synchronization error is stated as follows
Where M2 − M1 = M3 is the coefficient matrix of order (n × n) of the error system (Equation 4) and Γ(x, y) = g(y)−g(x) [47]
Controller u(t) may get rid of the nonlinear section
Control function formulation is defined as follows:
Where M2-M1=M3∈Rn×n is the coefficient matrix of system (Equation 4) [47]
Where the linear proposed controller matrix M4∈Rn×n controls the strength of the master system's controller
which is defined by the subcontroller function v(t)
Since v(t) = −M4e(t) is a scalar matrix with error variables
When v(t) is a scalar matrix with error variables and v(t) = −M4e(t) is a constant matrix
λi < 0 is the condition for diagonal matrix (M3 + M4)
where λi is the eigenvalue of matrix (M3 + M4)
state vectors of system (Equation 7) asymptotically converge to zero
and as a result of which MS (Equation 2) tracks the DS (Equation 3)
x(t) and y(t) are demonstrated to show the states of two identical and nonidentical chaotic systems
The chaotic synchronization problem can be assumed to be a suitable controller u ∈ Rn
stabilizing the synchronization error at the origin
This indicates that for all t ≥ t0 ≥ 0
where t0 is the time of control activation
the controller sends the synchronization error trajectories back to the origin
The MS and DS of Shimizu–Morioka systems are defined as follows in this context: The MS of the Shimizu–Morioka system is designated by
The DS of the Shimizu–Morioka system is designated by
we characterize sequential controllers: ui(t); ∀ui = (1
we have to calculate the error state (ex; ∀x = x
z) by combining the DS (Equation 8) and MS systems (Equation 9) using
Let us derive the error dynamics equations for applying the active control design methods:
the control functions are re-described as (vi; ∀i = 1
The error dynamics system (Equation 11) changes state
z) are defined by linearizing error system (Equation 11) with control effort (vi; ∀i = 1
If the control function follows the instructions (ex; ∀x = x
z) → 0 as time (∀ t → ∞)
then the system's stabilization is complete
To control the error dynamics (Equation 11) following the active control approach for the control functions (vi; ∀i = 1
one can use a variety of arbitrary scalar sets to create a constant matrix A
Where A is a constant matrix. Here, it is examined how the chaotic system's coefficient matrix's eigenvalues [43] influence the results
which are modifiable to get the required synchronization time
To stabilize the error system's state
the matrix A must all have eigenvalues following conditions (λi < o)
The selection of the matrix is Ai where (i = 1,2,3)
With the corresponding eigenvalues being λ1 = (−1
With the corresponding eigenvalues being λ2 = (−a
With the corresponding eigenvalues bing λ3 = (−b
Finally, we chose the A1 matrix for reduced synchronization time in the comparative analysis. Because when we chose A2 and A3 matrix for chaos control of Shimizu–Morioka, it takes longer time than A1 matrix, which is shown in Figures 6A–C
The dynamical change of the synchronized average error when we chose arbitrary matrix (A1
(A) To carry out the zoom of the dynamical change of the synchronized average error for constant matrix A1
(B) Zoom of the dynamical change of the synchronized average error for constant matrix A2
(C) Zoom of the dynamical change of the synchronized average error for constant matrix A3
we prove the control system (Equation 16):
we can construct the matrix B from the system (Equation 13)
If we fix (Equation 15) into Equation (14)
Where W = (B + A1) is a diagonal matrix
For this specific selection of constant matrix (A1; ∀λ1 = −1
according to the linearity system's stability theory
two systems are synchronized under the control system (Equation 20) if all the eigenvalues λi of the matrix W satisfy the condition (λi < o)
From the system (Equation 15) by operating A1 matrix
The MatLab Simulink is applied to the RK-4 algorithm to generate numerical results with a 0.01-time grid
We proceed with the MS (Equation 8) and DS (Equation 9) procedures under the following initial circumstances:
(A) The dynamical change of the synchronized states (x1
(B) The dynamical change of the synchronized states (y1
(C) The dynamical change of the synchronized states (z1
The dynamical change of the synchronized states of control effort ui
Where ζ1 ∈ R and x ∈ Rn are the control input and state of the system, and the nonlinear functions are gathered in (f, g). The BC scheme is given as follows to stabilize systems (Equation 24), using the strict feedback form recursively [53]:
Where ex, ζ1, ζ2, ..., ζk are error of state variables and u is the final control function [5]
The stable process of the first of one system (Equation 24) is described as follows:
we originate the dynamics state of variable κ1
which is regulated by κ1 = e1 for creating virtual controller ζ1 under the consideration of Lyapunov functions
The virtual control ζ1 = α1(κ1) ensures that the system (Equation 25) becomes asymptotically stable by estimating α1(κ1), while κ2 is a controller because of V1>0⇒V1˙<0 [44]
The stable process of the second of one system (Equation 24) is described as follows:
The new virtual variable κ2 is defined by ζ1 and α1(z1) as:
let us consider that the κ1˙,κ2˙ are subordinate coordinates of a new error subsystem:
V2˙=-Qκ1T-Qκ2T<0 in Rn
the virtual control ζ2 = α2(κ1
κ2) ensures that the system labeled (Equation 26) is asymptotically stable by estimating α2(κ1
The ongoing dimensional step defines the error variable κn:
The new virtual variable subsystems are given as follows:
V1˙=-Q1κ1T-Q2κ2T-...-QnκnT<0 in Rn
where Qi=T-1,∀(i=1,⋯,n)>0
According to the Lyapunov stability theory
the subsystem (Equation 29) is asymptotically stable when V2˙=-Qκ1T-Qκ2T<0
the virtual control αn−1(κ1
κn) ensures that the whole system (Equation 24) is asymptotically stable by estimating αn−1(κ1
which generally depends on x and ζ1
the system (Equation 23) is enormously stable worldwide for all initial conditions xi(0)∈Rn
The MS of the Shimizu–Morioka systems:
u is a single control input to be identified subsequently
We originated the error system concerning time for applying the backstepping control strategy using the error states
explanation (Equation 10) by combining (Equations 31
Following the sequence of the entire systems (Equation 24)
the error system (Equation 33) is mentioned previously as:
This project designated as control input u to ensure the stability of the error system (Equation 34)
the 3D nonlinear chaotic system will be governed by a three-step recursive strategy
each of which included a single virtual control function and a virtual variable
The formulation continues following the sequential equation of the system (Equation 34) from the first to the last subsystem until the transformation of the coordinates from (ex˙,ey˙,ez˙) to (κ1˙,κ2˙,κ3˙)
When ez is a controller and the first Lyapunov function is defined by a new virtual variable κ1 = ez, for creating the virtual control α1, which ensures that the first equation of Equation (34) is asymptotically stable by estimating the virtual control α1. The purpose of controller ez is to drive (ex, ey, ez) = (0, 0, 0) i.e. (x1; y1; z1) = (x2; y2; z2). Lyapunov function [44]-1:
V1˙ is regulated by κ1˙ in the following ways:
When ex = α1(ez) is used to define the second new virtual variable κ2 = ex − α1
the term κ1κ2(x2 + x1) in Equation (37) will be eliminated
The second virtual variable is governed by the system's (Equation 34) second equation
When ey is a controller and the second Lyapunov function is defined by the new virtual variable κ3 = ey − α2
We derived stabilization function α2
which ensures that the second of Equation (34) is asymptotically stable
When we use the time derivative of κ2 in V2˙
then the dynamical change of V2 takes place as follows::
The stabilization function α2 is chosen as:
Furthermore by substituting α2,V2˙ gets converted into:
the term κ2κ3 from Equation (41) will be eliminated
If we follow the sequence of Equation (30) and the control effort exists in the third equation
The third virtual variable is governed by the third equation of systems (Equation 34)
in which α2 = −κ2−κ1(x2 + x1) exists
V3˙ is regulated by κ3˙ in the following ways:
If the following preference for the control variable u:
(i.e., V3<0˙, since a, b > 0) and according to the LaSalle-Yoshizawa theorem [16, 54]
it is necessary to make it clear that all solutions of Equation (34) satisfy the conditions (ex; ∀x = x
32) are globally synchronized with the control function u
the set of new virtual variables is a new error model shown in (κ1
and now let us analyze the entire space of (κ1˙,κ2˙,κ3˙) :
The MatLab Simulink is applied to the RK-4 algorithm to generate numerical results with a 0.01-time grid. We proceed with the system (Equation 34) for completing the backstepping design simulation procedures under controller (Equation 45). Now, we proceed with fixing the parameter values of a = 0.81, b = 0.375, as shown in Figures 9–14
The error model with a virtual variable for backstepping without activated control
The error model with the virtual variable for backstepping with activated control
The dynamical change of error state (ex, ey, ez) and new subsystem (κ1, κ2, κ3) with activated control function is shown in Figures 9–14
The validity of a new subsystem under backstepping control with system equilibrium (0, 0, 0) is examined in Figure 12
along with the magnitude of system synchronization (Equation 34)
the average error propagation is calculated as follows:
The MS–DS system is globally synchronized following an initial momentary time period of approximately t = 2.5s. This is also supported by Figure 15B
where the exponential convergence of the synchronization superiority is determined by the error propagation on average error states:
Effectiveness of the synchronization times for (A) the AC approach and (B) the BC approach with the controller turned on for (0 ≤ t ≤ 100)
Figure 15 shows the time response of the control law
Figure 14 shows the synchronized states of MS–DS of the Shimizu–Morioka system devastating BC process by the activated controller
it is necessary the effectiveness of the DS is necessary to track the MS with similar characteristics for all future states
the BC formula reduces the number of controllers from 3 to 1
backstepping control outperforms the active control
thereby reducing controller complexity and cost
• The active control design includes sequential controllers and the backstepping design creates one controller by defining the Lyapunov function
the error dynamic is the tendency toward zero as time goes to infinity
hence the chaos synchronization of the Shimizu-Morioka chaotic system is asymptotically stable
• The states of MS (master system) and DS (drive system) exhibit similar activities in both instructions
• The results demonstrated that tracking the backstepping strategy takes much less time than the active control method for detecting the dynamics of transitory errors
it reaches global stability and asymptotic synchronization
Backstepping outperforms other strategies and is simpler to design

His haunting trilogy brings Japan’s darkest legends to life
The mist curls thickly in the mountainous forests of Fukuoka
hanging dense like an ancient spell over Takashi Shimizu’s fictional Inunaki Village
untouched by the laws of Japan and driven by a hunger for the forbidden
A collection of stories blending modern horror with ancient Japanese folklore — Shimizu’s three movies transport us to places where the boundaries between myth and reality blur.
Japan’s landscapes are drenched in centuries-old stories of spirits and curses
village and shadow has its own story to tell
Suicide Forest Village and Ox-Head Village
Shimizu crafts a deeply unsettling cinematic experience that roots horror not in monsters or murder but in places; the very soil of Japan.
few legends are as unnerving as that of Inunaki Village
also known as “Howling Village.” This haunted enclave is said to lie deep within the mountains of Fukuoka Prefecture
hidden by distance and supernatural barriers
Stories of Inunaki began circulating in the 1990s
forgotten village untouched by Japan’s laws — a place where violence is met with silence and outsiders are forever unwelcome.
Locals say that the only way to reach Inunaki Village is through an abandoned tunnel
Strewn with graffiti warning travelers to turn back
the tunnel is rumored to have once had a sign reading ominously: “Beyond this point
the Constitution of Japan does not apply.” Those who ignore this warning and proceed encounter a chilling silence that consumes sound and distorts time
cutting off cell signals and plunging intruders into isolation
Some claim desperate cries echo within the tunnel’s walls
rejecting all contact with the outside world
Inunaki Village may have been inspired by a real settlement that was once upstream along the Inunaki River, which was submerged during the construction of Inunaki Dam between 1970 and 1994. Residents were relocated, leaving behind ghostly remnants of a former life in the valley. Meanwhile, the old Inunaki Tunnel
it had become a site of tragedy and violence
including the brutal murder of a young man by local delinquents
The crime left an indelible mark on the tunnel
fusing reality with the supernatural as stories circulated of a white sedan — allegedly tied to the victim — appearing as a ghostly omen within the tunnel
including fatal accidents involving young thrill-seekers
fueled the legend of Inunaki as a cursed location
adding to its reputation as one of Japan’s most terrifying haunted spots
In his first installment of his horror trilogy
Shimizu reimagines this legend with chilling fidelity
capturing the overwhelming sense of isolation and terror that Japan’s abandoned rural spaces evoke
The villagers in his film are trapped in their own nightmarish world
and the protagonist’s journey into Inunaki becomes a descent into a place outside of time and space
Shimizu’s vision not only brings this mysterious village to life but also pays homage to Japan’s respect for the invisible boundaries between this world and the next
where some things are better left undisturbed
Known as Japan’s “Suicide Forest,” Aokigahara is a place steeped in sorrow and silence
where thick trees and volcanic rock absorb even the faintest of sounds
the forest is home to myths that reach far beyond its recent association with tragedy.
Aokigahara has long been regarded as a haunted realm, a liminal space where lost souls linger, unable to move on. Local legends suggest that, centuries ago, it was a place where ubasute — the practice of abandoning the elderly — was carried out during times of famine
Stories say the spirits of those left behind now haunt the forest
Shimizu dives into Aokigahara’s dark legacy
transforming it from a setting into a character in its own right
As his protagonists traverse the forest’s ghostly terrain
they encounter spirits tied to Japan’s broader themes of grief
Shimizu weaves into his narrative the concept of yurei
and their tendency to linger in places of suffering and sorrow
It is a horror born from Japan’s understanding of mental health
social isolation and the lingering presence of spirits who have suffered greatly in life
Aokigahara is a reflection of human suffering and loneliness
unmarked cemetery of those who died in despair
one finds not only the forest’s infamous “silence” — an absence of birdsong and wind that unnerves even the most steadfast visitors — but also signs of hope left by volunteers: placards urging people to seek help
where people come face-to-face with the fragility of the human mind and spirit
Shimizu’s film pays homage to this complex relationship between land
offering audiences not just a horror story but a contemplative look at Japan’s societal pressures
The final chapter in Shimizu’s trilogy takes us to Ox-Head Village
based on an even more obscure legend about a rural area rumored to be plagued by an ancient curse
Said to be one of Hokuriku region’s most terrifying ghost spots
the story centers around an abandoned hotel known as Tsubono Kosen.
Once a bustling tourist destination in the 1970s
While the surrounding facilities were dismantled over time
local bikers and paranormal enthusiasts.
The location’s haunting reputation was fueled by dark events: a young boy’s drowning in the hotel pool in 1980 is said to have led to its closure
while local legend claims the hotel’s missing owner was later found hanged in the boiler room.
Locals caution against visiting Tsubono Kosen
with superstitious “rules” for anyone attempting to leave unharmed: don’t arrive in a white car
Folklore holds that water sources often draw spirits
Ox-Head Village also introduces another famous Hokuriku site: the Miyajima Tunnel
or “Ox-Head Tunnel,” located 55 kilometers west of Tsubono Kosen
55-meter tunnel on the Toyama-Ishikawa border is named after the nearby Ushikubi (Ox-Head) district
known for its supernatural legends and once home to a now-lost village also named “Ox-Head Village.”
became infamous after a man’s self-immolation and his mother’s subsequent suicide near the site
with visitors claiming to see an elderly woman in mourning clothes drifting through the tunnel at night
said to have once wept blood and now left headless — a ghostly monument to the location’s haunted past
Shimizu taps into these unsettling local myths
bringing out their layered cultural symbolism and cautionary themes
His characters confront not just a place but an embodiment of ancestral anger and lingering supernatural forces
Shimizu uses the layered fears of karmic retribution and unbroken taboos
reminding us that Japan’s spooky rural sites are haunted not only by spirits but by the invisible boundaries that mark the limits of the human world
where stepping out of line can have lasting
Shimizu’s trilogy is remarkable not only for its supernatural elements but for its grounding in the unique history and culture of Japan
Unlike many horror films that rely on shock or jump scares
folklore and an undercurrent of respect for the spirit world.
His portrayal of Japanese horror respects the tradition of kaidan (supernatural stories)
meant not just to terrify but to impart caution and respect for the unseen forces that shape our world
This trilogy is Shimizu’s way of keeping Japan’s folklore alive
while also bringing ancient fears into the modern consciousness without diminishing their mystique.
What makes these urban legends so compelling is that they are deeply interwoven with both cultural memory and societal issues
These stories aren’t simply ghost tales; they’re reflections of Japan’s social fabric
of the pressures and unspoken fears that lie beneath
Inunaki’s lawless land echoes fears of isolation and societal breakdown
Aokigahara mirrors Japan’s struggles with mental health and isolation
And the cursed villages remind us of the dire consequences of breaking sacred taboos
Shimizu’s trilogy takes these cultural concerns and recasts them as horror
reminding us that Japan’s past is alive and watching.
