Todd Balf is a New York Times bestselling writer known for his ability to identify little-known people and events in the worlds of adventure and sports and bring their stories vividly to life
He is author of the critically acclaimed adventure sagas The Last River and The Darkest Jungle and the biography Major
about the pioneering Black bicycle racer Marshall “Major” Taylor
Balfʼs writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine
He is also the author of the Everand Original Complications
a memoir about how illness reshaped his own life as an athlete
BOOK EXCERPT
they were in good spirits and relatively healthy
The exception was the coxswain of the four-man rowing crew
who in an unexpected roll of the boat was grazed in the neck by a wayward round fired during modern pentathlon target practice
His readiness for Olympic competition was questionable
would shoot himself in the foot when a Belgian marksman absently knocked into him
Despite the wound Hinds scored a perfect fifty in the 400- meter event
team’s arrival at Gare Saint-Lazare station
the world record holder in the breaststroke
broke an ankle in an overeager leap to the platform from the still moving train
to grab a baguette from an attractive girl selling them
would say the sight of French bread made him ill
The Paris newspapers were there to record the American invasion
most of the ink devoted to Weissmuller and Hawaii’s Duke Kahanamoku
the two-time Olympic gold medal winner in the 100-meter freestyle
These Games would bring a much-awaited showdown between the twenty-year-old upstart and the thirty-four-year-old elder statesman
Though the two men were public comrades on the same American team
with athletes more aligned with hometown sporting clubs than the stars-and-stripes-branded national organization
Weissmuller was the face of Chicago’s cockily dominant Illinois Athletic Club
Kahanamoku was the face of territorial Hawaii
which had raised the funds for all three of his Olympic appearances
He and his Waikiki beach friends had become locally famous years earlier
when they started their own grassroots club
Magazines and newspapers were obsessed with the swimmers’ physical numbers — height
Weissmuller had smaller feet: size ten and a half to Kahanamoku’s thirteen
The defending Olympic champ had larger hands
Future high-flying dunkers like Wilt Chamberlain and Dr
J had similar sized hands but were seven-foot-one and six-seven
The fascination with Duke’s hands was such that an avid memorabilia collector considered a hastily drawn outline of them on lined notebook paper his most cherished Kahanamoku artifact
Both Weissmuller and Kahanamoku shared the perfect body proportions of long upper torsos and comparatively short legs
commonly the same length as a person’s height
Longer arms equated to longer distance per stroke
People were still not clear on what truly governed speed — early crawl adoptees mistakenly emphasized a fast
windmilling stroke — but it eventually would be apparent that stroke length
How fast the two swimmers could push each other was the question
It hit upon a larger question that pervaded all human exploits
from running to flying to auto racing to mountain climbing: What was the limit of possibility
British alpinists George Mallory and Andrew Irvine were clawing their way up Mount Everest
despite the prevailing belief that no one could survive the upper reaches where life-sustaining oxygen was scarce
Anything was possible in the record-setting age
before the freestyle stroke was universally adopted
the barrier to be broken was 100 yards in one minute
Weissmuller was threatening to break fifty seconds
slicing through water at a rate of speed akin to runners circling a park
Humans had been land animals but they were something else now
The wild card in the coming showdown was Weissmuller himself
Could the exuberant star stay out of trouble
Weissmuller had heard an anti-American jeer from a passing bicycle rider
dragging him to the ground and badly beating him
and only because of coach Bill Bachrach’s persuasive defense did he avoid being sent home
Just before they had disembarked the SS America
he had sternly reminded everybody aboard: “Now remember you are ambassadors of the United States
“an army cantonment without any soldiers,” in one writer’s words
looked like a dusty Old West outpost — a smattering of shacks
Every day the swim team left the Piscine des Tourelles outdoor stadium for lunch at Gruber’s American Café
where they returned for dinner following the afternoon training session
Rarely was the team happy with the food or the service
The favorite pairing was the champion swimmer Gertrude Ederle (soon to become famous for being the first woman to swim the English Channel) and the runner Joseph “Joie” Ray
officials eventually found out and put a stop to the matches
There were numerous formal events where the swim team was expected to be polished representatives of their country
They were feted at the Place de la Concorde and did water stunts at the Sporting Club
There were hundreds of ways for Weissmuller to make the wrong kind of news
The coaches and American dignitaries simply held their breath
Both turned heads but for opposite reasons
the original record setters of modern times
had faded faster than anyone thought likely
having dramatically changed everything in a comparative heartbeat — the antiquated strokes and breathing techniques of their last Olympic outing
their unshakable belief in a swimming style that dated back to the samurai era
As they watched the Japanese during training sessions
British experts admitted they were impressed and predicted they would have to look out for them at the next Olympic Games in four years’ time
Instead the early results suggested something unthinkable: They had to look out right now
They had to beware of one swimmer in particular
In the opening round of qualifiers in the first middle distance event
an unknown nineteen-year-old named Katsuo Takaishi had not only advanced but swam faster than the favored British
there were few racing coaches in Japan and only two swimming pools
one of which Takaishi and his teenaged teammates had dug for themselves
He was part of a tiny Japanese delegation of twenty-four athletes versus 350 Americans
As an Asian who was dismissed as just one more of the “little yellow men” by the French founder of the modern Games
Takaishi surely shared a sensibility with the Pacific Islander
He knew what it was like to be demeaned as less than
But he also had the arrogance of Weissmuller
He would go on to become the first Asian to medal in the Olympics in swimming
and from 1924 to 1928 was considered the leading challenger to Weissmuller’s sprint crown
Observers in Paris watched Takaishi and saw something unorthodox
One Australian reporter argued that his flutter kick couldn’t account for his speed
given he had small feet and hands “of which any woman would feel proud.” He was clearly double-jointed
The Australian newspapers would mix admiration with racist stereotypes when Takaishi visited the Commonwealth two years later
The White Australia policy had long barred immigration of Asians and Pacific Islanders
Swimmer Noel Ryan wrote in a coaching bulletin
“[the] Japanese crawl was aided by natural looseness and development of the thighs and ankles — probably made so strong and supple by centuries of squatting around the communal rice bowl.”
his agility and flexibility evoking muscle and sinew rather than stiff skeletal framing
He didn’t require freakish hands the size of dinner plates and feet like fins
The fans threw their support behind the small outlier they couldn’t explain but couldn’t help but root for
the sold-out crowd of 12,000 spectators were in their seats in the swelteringly hot Piscine des Tourelles
waiting on the dark-suited French race official to raise his gun for the start of the 100-meter men’s freestyle final
The lineup of swimmers curled their toes at the edge of the pool and assumed a slight crouch
Photographers piled on top of each other in a front-row box beneath the diving platform
and motion picture operators worked the deck
nicknamed “Le Parleur Inconnu” (the unknown speaker)
He had been banned at the start of the Games when print reporters protested his “unfair advantage” in broadcasting live
squeezing his ample body into a hot-air-balloon basket to produce windy
bird’s-eye view commentary of the track-and-cycling events at Colombes
the bow-tied Dehorter sat behind a plate-sized microphone mounted on a sturdy tripod
Four large loudspeakers lined the upper stadium wall
The French had reserved the 100-meter race for the last two days of competition for the self-evident reason that “in swimming
The president of the French Olympic Committee
having already sat through three renditions of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and three American flag raisings since morning
In one of the most U.S.– dominant days in Olympic history
the Americans had won three consecutive races
and the 100-meter women’s freestyle and winning all but one of the other six medals
“Looks like an American holiday,” said Clary to the American VIPs in attendance
Many of the track-and-field athletes who competed in the weeks earlier had gone home
but some had stayed to see swimming’s battle of the century
had stayed around with the apparently unrealized dream of a midnight journey up a Paris flagpole to swipe an Olympic flag
If coaches was concerned that Duke Kahanamoku and his brother Sam—another elite Hawaiian on the U.S
team—would race together to defeat Weissmuller
someone had taken care of it by putting Sam in lane one
Johnny and Duke were next to one another in lanes four and five
There was no evidence that the brothers would have engaged in cynical tactics if the trio were clumped together — for example
Sam and Duke squeezing Johnny by boxing him in and disrupting his stroke
There was no history of such behavior by either brother
but having Sam unavailable to help Duke was a boon to Weissmuller’s positive race psychology
Weissmuller could relax knowing the biggest doomsday scenario was erased
The 400-meter final on Friday had required a Weissmuller effort few had seen before
He had been taken to the limit by Sweden’s Arne Borg and the Aussie Andrew Charlton
He had gathered himself for a triumphant come-from-behind sprint in the final 100 meters
he needed to clutch hold of the guard rope to keep from falling over
Weissmuller was also anxious about how the crowd would receive him
howling at his comedic antics but hissing when he disrespected his competitors
In the 400- meter preliminaries he had drawn the fans’ ire when he waved his hands around on the final lap to
“show how easily he was taking it.” He had no time to recover
given Saturday’s 100-meter prelims and the 4-by-200 relay final
In the latter he didn’t have the strongest team to support him
A core group of Chicago-based swimmers replaced the Hawaiians like Duke who had helped win gold for the U.S
Weissmuller managed to swim a blistering anchor leg to record a new world-record time
The Americans knew a good start couldn’t win the 100-meter race but a bad start could lose it
Duke tended to project more steeply downward
eager to get into the water and begin stroking
stretching his long body for as long as it could fly
Moments before he hit the water he didn’t appear to be diving at all; he held his line as straight as a pencil
and legs in what he and Bachrach described as a “shallow plunge.” The pancake landing prevented his body from going as deep as most other swimmers at the start
His slightly bent right leg was poised to kick at the same instant he landed
Bill Bachrach thought he had slow reflexes
He didn’t want Johnny to try to beat any gun
kicking his feet six times for every full stroke
feeling the cumulative effects of racing more disciplines that weekend than any of other finalists
despite his good start and the strong opening twenty-five meters
After all the races he had done and all the years he had been at it
One hundred meters was longer than most people realized

No surprise that this is a book excerpt–it’s fantastic
“Bill Bachrach thought he had slow reflexes
and since Duke was in the lane to his left
Weissmuller could check on his form.”
Reaction time and breathing side–some things never change
Weissmuller was lucky in the 400 that 16yo Boy Charlton had a tough lead-up to his first international competition
his coach wasn’t going to be able to travel to Paris and Charlton considered withdrawing
Public fund-raising provided coach Adriann with a ticket but he was ill before departure
Unlike the Americans who could voyage to France in less than a week
it took Australians over a month and the ship had no pool or serious training facilities
In the middle of the shark-infested Arabian Sea
Coach Adriann jumped overboard and Charlton had to be restrained by three men when he intended to dive over and rescue his coach
Adriann had served in ‘The Great War’ and suffered from gassing… Read more »

The struggle to survive emotionally-charged
physically demanding situations can often become easier with the introduction of humor
That has certainly driven the success of the action comedy film genre
especially when they include mismatched protagonists
The new martial arts-driven action comedy, Baby Assassins 2
the sequel to the hit 2021 feature Baby Assassins
is one such alluring slacker comedy with some extreme action beats
Writer-director Yugo Sakamoto and lead actresses Akari Takaishi and Saori Izawa returned to the franchise to make Baby Assassins 2
The trio once again elevates the standard for thrilling and hilarious slacker action-comedies with their latest collaboration
Set two years after their epic quarrel with the Assassin Guild and a brutal killer in the first film
Baby Assassins 2 follows the titular killers
as they’re still living together as roommates
The excessively cutesy and excitable Chisato discovers they haven’t paid their gym membership in approximately four years
The last payment they made to the gym was when they first joined on a whim in high school
and now their years of overdue fees must be paid before they lose their membership in the Assassin Guild
ask questions later partner must settle their debts or incur another late penalty
The girls’ frantic journey to resolve their bill leads on a wacky but equally comical journey
While trying to send a last-minute payment to the gym
the assassins’ bank is taken hostage
Chisato and Mahiro must give up their preferred
easygoing lifestyle of enjoying food binges between executing their big-money targets
With all their money spent on elaborate sweets
the pair are forced to take part-time jobs while waiting to be reinstated by the Assassin Guild as hired killers
The girls face further conflict when a duo of determined brother assassins — Makoto (Tatsuomi Hamada) and Yuri (Joey Iwanaga) — who want to steal their spot in the Assassin Guild begin targeting them
The girls take whatever means necessary in order to survive
Action comedies often thrive on their ability of creating genuine emotional tension between their stunt work and humorous gags
Baby Assassins 2 instead largely appeals to both fans of its predecessor and series newcomers through the absurdity of its entire plot
Takaishi and Izawa once again highlight Chisato and Mahiro’s commitment to carrying out the Assassin Guild’s physically challenging – and possibly lethal – missions for them
The actresses also maintain the spirit of the original film’s toned down emotional tension and lack of true moral quandary by focusing on the protagonists’ lighthearted nature
engaging action sequences as gorging on a variety of food
Despite its deviance from other action comedies
Baby Assassins 2 still thrives in its approach to serving as a quirky character dissection
While it features fewer action set pieces than movies like Timo Tjahjanto’s The Night Comes For Us
Sakamoto’s latest feature still keeps the characters’ adrenaline pumping
Whether Chisato and Mahiro are running to the bank to pay their bill before it’s due because they continuously procrastinate
or take on jobs as lottery vendor spokespeople in animal suits when they’re suspended from the Assassin’s Guild
they amusingly show that they don’t think about long-term consequences
Takaishi and Izawa once again have effortless chemistry as their unique but equally relatable protagonists in the new sequel
The dynamic actresses are synchronized as co-stars
whether they’re telling jokes or engaged in tandem combat
The duo’s free-spirited bond infuses the franchise’s dangerous world of assassins with charm when they’re dispatched to kill their dangerous opponents
The protagonists’ physicality was crafted by another series veteran
who also worked on the stunts for the original movie
His work once again brilliantly takes advantage of the space the scenes take place in
as well as the performers’ physicalities and abilities
Standout action sequences in the follow-up include when the girls frantically but nonchalantly react when they initially realize they have to pay their massive gym debt while in their shared apartment
Another standout action sequence follows the girls as they’re prancing around in their animal costumes for their new part-time lottery jobs
which quickly turns into a fun but compelling brawl between them
Besides their stellar portrayals of Sonomura‘s stuntwork
the actresses once again play well off of each other in their characters’ bombastic and drastically different personalities
Takaishi once again plays Chisato as bubbly and goofy
while Izawa plays Mahiro as more sedate and sensible
While Chisato and Mahiro serve as the feature’s protagonists
Baby Assassins 2 is ultimately an ensemble comedy
and the rest of the cast is equally strong in their comedic and physical performances
Hamada and Iwanaga also portray Makoto and Yuri as being just as likable a pair
despite their ambition to take over the girls’ spots in the Assassin Guild
Baby Assassins 2 relentlessly fights to prove its worth as a comedically stellar
exhilarating action-packed feature that needs to be seen on as big of a screen as possible
As with the franchise’s first installment
Izawa and Takaishi slay in their performances as they struggle with their day jobs while scheming to be accepted back into the Assassin Guild
Both actresses once again perfectly take their protagonists’ over-the-top humor and Sonomura‘s awe-inspiring fight choreography to even greater heights in the sequel
including questioning their worth at their jobs and where they belong in overall society
into the everyday lives of the film’s low-level assassins
premiere on September 21 during Fantastic Fest 2023

What are the risks that lead to traffic collisions
Analysis of collision data shows many causes
inattention and operation errors such as mistaking the brake for the accelerator
These are the ultimate causes of collisions
the real risk lies in the feeling of anxiety drivers experience while driving
Every driver is feeling various concerns while driving
Some say they are worried about becoming a cause of a problem
and others say their concerns are more about themselves and their families
Some are worried about how they can stay away from collisions caused by others
Driving while feeling such anxiety has an effect on the driver
such as operating errors and a narrow field of vision
announced that Honda will strive for zero traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles globally by 2050
we must eliminate risks that lead to collisions
Honda aims to realize a society in which people can travel with complete peace of mind
what we need is not only the mechanisms for automobiles and motorcycles
* Source: The National Police Agency report on the number of fatalities caused by traffic accidents
Safety technologies such as ADAS are generally considered as measures for the time of
these technologies are designed for collision avoidance and collision damage mitigation
it is important to further advance these technologies to make our vehicles safer
advancement of automobile and motorcycle technologies and the traffic environment are not enough to realize zero traffic collision fatalities all over the world because “people” are the ultimate cause of traffic collisions
We want to build a society where people can enjoy mobility freely with total peace of mind by eliminating the worries and anxieties of people while driving and liberating people from the risk of collisions
The initial step Honda engineers took to address these fundamental challenges was to sincerely consider people issues
shared the story about how the research in this field started and what kind of technologies resulted from the research
It all began with considering the concerns and worries of our customers
and each customer experiences different concerns depending on the situation
Please take a look at these nine concerns we identified
Have you felt any of these during your routine driving
These worries cause driver operating errors and distraction
the feeling of anxiety has already heightened the risk of a collision before the collision actually occurs
This means the driver does not have to come close to risking a collision
but we want to go further and create a situation where the driver doesn’t even feel there are risks
Pursuing drivers’ peace of mind will lead to the realization of a society with zero traffic collision fatalities
Honda has conducted a comprehensive study of human beings
we conducted discussions with outside experts including some futurists to think about what our society will look like in the future
What became clear to us was that people’s desire to act on their own will become stronger
technology that does not cater to each individual’s desires and wishes will not be accepted
It is not only about fully automating mobility products and eliminating collisions
Honda’s goal is to enable people to drive with confidence
Wouldn’t it be great if technologies can support insecure drivers to make no mistakes
One of the technologies to make this real is our Intelligent Driver-Assistive Technology
These technologies give the driver confidence
for novice drivers who tend to be preoccupied with looking straight ahead
the AI-based system will alert the driver to cars and pedestrians approaching from the side
For elderly drivers who are not confident in their responsiveness
the system can offer various support including operational assistance
Our next-generation driver-assistive technologies will enable all drivers to drive with peace of mind
While developing technologies to eliminate worries and anxieties for each and every driver to boost their confidence
Honda is also taking initiatives toward safety for everyone sharing the road
We are currently developing the “Safe and Sound Network Technology” which connects people
mobility products and infrastructure via telecommunications to avoid various risks
Honda’s safety slogan is “Safety for Everyone.” Although this slogan represents Honda’s passion toward realizing safety for all people
we do not say “Safety for All.” This is because Honda is not aiming to realize safety by applying uniform safety systems and technologies for everyone using the road
We say “Safety for Everyone” because Honda strives to create a safe society where everyone can enjoy mobility with peace of mind
and we will do this while respecting the will of each individual
Honda aims to realize zero traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles globally by 2050
Honda is the world’s largest manufacturer of mobility products
and therefore we will strive to bring peace of mind to everyone on the planet
Japan is one of the most advanced countries regarding traffic safety
One of the reasons why the world’s first production car with a Level 3 automated driving system was realized in Japan is because the necessary laws and regulations were promptly enacted
and CMBS is already mandatory for new automobiles sold in Japan
three years ahead of Europe which plans to mandate it in July 2024
With the addition of advanced technologies
it may be easy to visualize a safer society where people can enjoy mobility with peace of mind
the biggest challenge is to address motorcycle collisions in developing nations
over 20 million motorcycles are sold in India
with an additional 15 million in Southeast Asia
According to an analysis of collision classification in Thailand
approximately 75 percent of all traffic fatalities in Thailand involve motorcycles
One of the reasons for such a high rate of motorcycle collisions is the lack of rider education
it is not the custom to learn motorcycle riding skills at driving/riding schools like we do in Japan
the majority of motorcycle riders have no experience in taking rider skill training
Another factor is that motorcycles are inexpensive and durable
Due to the long product life of motorcycles
it takes a long time to go through the cycle of replacing old products with new products and start seeing the effect of applying advanced technologies
there is a device that is being adopted at an explosive pace
Honda is taking advantage of the quick advancement of telecommunication technologies to enable people to ride motorcycles with peace of mind
If we can connect everyone sharing the road with our “Safe and Sound Network Technology,” motorcycle riders and pedestrians can be better protected
Through these technologies and initiatives
but aim to realize a society where everyone can enjoy the freedom of mobility
Honda will go beyond the improvement of automobile and motorcycle performance and use any technologies including network technologies to make progress toward the realization of a society that provides enhanced peace of mind to everyone sharing the road
Once zero traffic collision fatalities is achieved
and everyone will enjoy the “freedom of being liberated from the risk of traffic collisions” where people can go anywhere
That is the future society Honda envisions
We had many discussions about what “freedom” means in our society
Freedom does not mean doing whatever we want
which may lead to endangering people around us
our definition of “freedom” is closer to “autonomy.” We can go places through our own power
so we control our mobility as our own responsibility
It is close to the floating feeling we experienced when we were able to ride a bicycle for the first time
we expand our world further and further from home
Honda wants people everywhere in the world to experience that feeling
but we are moving forward one step at a time
envisioning the path to realize our goal of zero traffic collision fatalities

Shigeru Ishiba speaks at a press conference today following his election as party leader
Japan’s incoming new prime minister
is a 67-year-old former banker who has served as defence minister and has headed up the agriculture department
Having narrowly defeated his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) colleague Sanae Takaishi in a vote of “law makers” (MPs) in the Japanese Diet today
he will formally take over from Fumio Kishida at the beginning of October
Excitement here in Tokyo has been restrained, given how often Japan changes leaders without any significant consequences. However, there are reasons to believe that Ishiba, if he can assert himself in the notoriously Machiavellian world of Japanese politics
and that his elevation could have consequences for the region and the wider world
Neither of these ideas are feasible in the near term but they do reveal a man who understands that
in a region of increasing threats and global instability
Japan needs to become more capable of mounting its own defence
As for the UK, there may be areas for fruitful cooperation. A slightly more self-reliant Japan would surely be open to developing its relationship with a post-Brexit Britain and even reviving the spirit of the successful alliance between the two countries from 1902-22
Whether the more pro-EU Keir Starmer-led government is quite so keen is another matter
Yet Japan and the UK today face many of the same challenges
One area of mutual concern is the revitalisation of the countryside
He represents the struggling Japanese coastal prefecture of Tottori
which has struggled with depopulation and economic decline in recent decades
with the highest percentage of migrants being in the 20-24 age group
Ishiba has vowed to make reviving the regions a priority
with concrete proposals incentivising businesses and entrepreneurs to come to the seemingly moribund ghost towns and cities which proliferate in Japan’s interior
and though the Tories’ “levelling up” label has been rebadged as “securonomics” the basic policy goal of minimising disparities remains the same
If Ishiba can make any progress at all in this extremely difficult policy area
it would make sense for the UK government to pay close attention
The same can be said for Ishiba’s plans for the economy, given that Japan, like the UK, has colossal public debt
He has also vowed to do more to relieve the financial burden of low-income families by boosting wages and removing consumption tax on certain items
Through all of this, Ishiba — interestingly — does not appear to be especially ideological. He has maintained a consistent anti-corruption line throughout his career but has frequently changed his mind on policy
such as his turn from championing renewables to backing nuclear
Whether that was due to admirable flexibility and intellectual honesty
or a lack of firm principles and indecisiveness
could well determine the fate of Ishiba’s premiership

EmailIn a rehearsal space in Lexington earlier this summer
three dancers crowded together on the top step of a stool
it was the three sisters of “Lon Po Po” hiding from a wolf who tricked its way into their lives by pretending to be their grandmother
The 2024 Makers: 10 artists of color making an impact
but still worried,” Mochizuki instructed the group as they ran through portions of the roughly 10-minute ballet
In the scene, the girls climb up into a ginkgo tree to hide from the wolf. Mochizuki gave feedback as they rehearsed, as she does with all the productions danced under her company the Asian American Ballet Project
It’s billed as the only ballet company in the country working exclusively with Asian American and Pacific Islander artists to create ballets about the Asian American experience
As a professional ballet dancer for decades
she saw few Asian American dancers around her
a path she knew she eventually wanted to take
even though I had this idea in my head that I can do whatever I want,” Mochizuki said
“I think it's a very American idea: if we work hard
Mochizuki started dancing as a toddler in her home state of California
She then moved to the East Coast for college at Tufts University and apprenticed at a ballet company in Rhode Island
she completed her thesis on the history of Asian Americans in ballet
which has long depicted Asian characters using racist stereotypes — for example
using makeup to accentuate facial features or costumes that mock traditional clothing
Elizabeth Mochizuki in Victor Plotnikov’s "Given" with Ballet Rhode Island
Cemal Ekin)“I went back and looked at the classical ballet canon
and thinking about how Asian bodies have been represented,” said Mochizuki
“And ballet is coming from out of a European tradition
she went on to dance professionally for nearly two decades
She played the Sugar Plum Fairy in "The Nutcracker," and also danced in and was the assistant director for Boston’s "Urban Nutcracker." Throughout her career
Mochizuki says she loved dancing to other choreographers’ work
but it didn’t always feel like she was being true to her identity when she did
"It didn't feel like it was my artistry so much as I was their medium
"Almost like I had to leave a piece of myself behind in order to be a dancer.”
Elizabeth Mochizuki leads a class of high school aged students at the Tony Williams Dance School
she kept thinking about founding her own company
“I was nervous to start a company right away
teaching transitioned to virtual classes and that was when Mochizuki
do I want to be a teacher the rest of my life?” she remembered thinking at the time

(Courtesy Nicole Marie Photography)Mochizuki set out to create the space she had been missing in her professional career: a space for and about Asian Americans
She said she wanted the company to serve as a source of empowerment for dancers like her
“There was a lot of anti-Asian violence going on,” said Mochizuki
“And I thought maybe this is what we need… Maybe I can be a part of the solution by creating a space that humanizes Asian Americans.”
But going from idea to action was challenging
Someone told her to start posting online and create a social media presence for her new venture
Then came networking and finding the funding to bring her dreams to reality
Mochizuki participated in a mentorship program with the Network for Arts Administrators of Color with ArtsBoston. It was there she met Jessica Roseman, a choreographer in the city. Roseman says what Mochizuki is doing with the Asian American Ballet Project is difficult but impressive work.
“It's three jobs, really, because it's the vision and then there's the financial side and the marketing side and then she’s choreographing on top of all of this,” said Roseman. “And then also resourcing where in the town this was all going to happen, negotiating contracts and hiring stage managers and lighting design. It's a multifold position.”

(Courtesy Nicole Marie Photography)The company currently employs six dancers, and together they’ve done two annual showcases, each featuring four short ballets. The work has proven affirming for dancers like Amane Takaishi, who played one of the three sisters in the “Lon Po Po” ballet and has known Mochizuki for a decade.
“Rather than being like ‘Oh, I'm the other one out. I want to hide in this community’ … I feel very empowered to put that side of me out there,” said Takaishi. “And to have a company based on that theme is even more empowering because then we're all together… I feel like our voices are heard.”
It's a feeling Mochizuki hopes to pass on to her son, Stefen, who is 8. She sometimes brings him to the studio to see her at work.
Elizabeth Mochizuki works with Asian American Ballet Project dancer Rheya Shano as she rehearses for an upcoming performance. (Jesse Costa/WBUR)“It's something good for him to see that, first of all, a woman can be in charge of a company and also an Asian American, person of color, can be in charge,” Mochizuki said. “I think all that is really great for him.”
The Asian American Ballet Project wrapped up its second annual showcase in June. Now, Mochizuki is working toward next year. The project doesn’t have its own physical location yet, but for the moment, Mochizuki’s focus is finding money to fund the performances she wants to put on and thinking about ways to move her company forward.
“I think we can do more,” she said. “And I think the more we're out there in the world creating new things, the more we'll draw the audience.”

Kids movies so often bear little of the actual lived-in experience of growing up, but Yamada Naoko’s luminous anime “The Colors Within” gently reverberates with the doubts and yearnings of young life
Totsuko (voiced by Suzukawa Sayu) is a student at an all-girls Catholic boarding school
she explains how she experiences colors differently
like an aura she senses from another person
has the tendency to blurt things out before she quite intends to
She accidentally tells a nun that her color is beautiful
she’s transfixed by the purple and yellow blur of a volleyball hurtling toward her — so much so that she’s happily dazed when it smacks her in the head
“The Colors Within” wears its heart on its sleeve
a slinky brushstroke shapes the contours of a hillside horizon
That evocative sensibility connects with the movie’s spiritual underpinnings
Totsuko prays “to have the serenity to accept the things she can’t change.” In “The Colors Within,” a trio of young loners bond over what makes them uniquely themselves
The ball that knocks down Totsuko is thrown by a classmate named Kimi (Akari Takaishi)
who not long after that gym class drops out of school — hounded
(Boys are off-limits for the boarding school.) Totsuko
and eventually does at a local used bookstore
When a bespectacled boy named Rui (Kido Taisei) approaches and says he plays the theremin
Totsuko blurts out that they should start a band
They aren’t much more than strangers to each other
but they do — a group urged together by Totsuko’s earnest positivity and her instinct that they are suited to one another
Despite their relatively scant experience (none in the case of Totsuko)
They practice in an old church near Rui’s home that Kimi and Totsuko take a ferry to get to
loves music but has parents who expect a different professional path
But much goes unspoken in “The Colors Within.” If there’s a character who voices what isn’t articulated
it’s the kindly Sister Hiyoshiko (Yui Aragaki)
it’s clear that her sense of guidance and atonement goes beyond school policy
“We can chart a new course any time we wish,” she says
But much of what matters in “The Colors Within” isn’t said aloud
regardless of any missteps or disappointments by these three young people

they appear to be average women who don’t quite fit into the societal mold
what sets them apart is that they are actually professional killers
“Baby Walkure 2 Baby” (“Baby Assassins 2 Babies”)
is the sequel to the 2021 hit “Baby Walkure” (“Baby Assassins”)
an action comedy that gained fans through word of mouth
were high school students and members of the Kanto Koroshiya Kyokai (the Kanto region’s assassins association)
they have graduated high school and are now roommates
they are supposed to blend in and not attract any attention to themselves
they get caught up in a robbery and take the criminals down in a spectacular fashion
which leads to their suspension from the association
they are not allowed to take any jobs as hired guns and have to make ends meet by doing other part-time jobs
as they are not official members of the association
the brothers come up with a plan to kill Chisato and Mahiro
it sets into motion a brutal battle between the killers
Fans of the first movie enjoyed seeing the difference between Chisato and Mahiro’s leisurely life compared with their action scenes
The movie was a long-running hit and was shown for more than six months at Cinema Rosa film theater in Ikebukuro
she made headlines for her role as Nezuko in the stage adaption of the megahit manga “Kimetsu no Yaiba” (“Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba”)
The rising star has also appeared in other films
including “Watashi no Shiawasena Kekkon” (“As Long as We Both Shall Live”)
Izawa was born in 1994 and is an actress and stunt performer from Saitama Prefecture
She was hired as a stunt woman in such major Hollywood movies as “Snake Eyes: G.I
Joe Origins” (2021) and “John Wick: Chapter 4” (2023)
She has received high praise as an action star and won the award for new actress at the Japan Movie Critics Awards for her performance in “Baby Assassins.”
The Yomiuri Shimbun was able to sit down with the two actresses for an interview
The Yomiuri Shimbun: Chisato Sugimoto is a vibrant person who is easily able to make new friends
Mahiro Fukagawa is an indecisive person who finds it difficult to talk to others
How did you go about creating the character of Chisato
Takaishi: When the first movie was in production
I always carried around a replica gun — even off-set — just to get used to it
I practiced reloading a gun at home every day
I thought that that was the first step in getting closer to Chisato
as you’re a stunt performer who specializes in action scenes
Izawa: I regularly head to work with a gun and knives in my bag
a professional killer and a stunt performer are very similar
I was easily able to slip into the role of a killer
I already have many guns and knives at home
Yomiuri: I heard that you have great chemistry because you two get along off-set
She met me at the station but was jumping around on one foot because one of her sandals broke
I probably won’t forget that for the rest of my life
but we just ended up playing the dizzy bat game and watching movies
I can hide my face and just focus on my body movements
there were many moments when I could just become Mahiro without thinking
Yomiuri: What are the must-see moments in the sequel
Takaishi: Many people who saw the first film said they wanted to see more scenes of us just relaxing
other characters in the movie are fascinating
And I think the characters’ world has hugely expanded
Yomiuri: The action scenes in this movie are more exciting compared to the first film
Izawa: I was really honored to do a fight scene with Joey [who plays Yuri]
so we competed to see which one of us could sweat more
We took off our shirts — he took off his tank top and I took off my T-shirt
The amount was way more than just a competition

National Report
Osaka Prefecture—The water meter kept running and the indoor lights were on at a house believed to have been left “unoccupied” after the homeowner in his 70s died five years ago
City officials could find no heir to the property
a neighbor reported to prefectural police that a corpse was inside the house
The skeletal remains of an elderly woman were found lying on a bed
and a police autopsy determined she had died of starvation
She was the common-law wife of the deceased homeowner
was found emaciated and taken into protective custody
were never entered into the family registry in Japan for unknown reasons
Perhaps because they did not technically “exist,” they never sought help from their neighbors or local government offices
bought the two-story wooden house that was built more than 50 years ago in a residential area of the city center
The woman and her son used to hold part-time jobs
but they were apparently out of work in recent years
They relied on the man’s inheritance for their living needs after he died in 2016
According to city officials and other sources
the son said that they fell short of living expenses and survived on only water and salt after they had “somen” noodles in late August
He said he was watching over his weakening mother but was hesitant to call an ambulance
contact the city office or seek other help because they had no family registration
Those around them found nothing unusual about the elderly widow and her middle-aged son
She was often seen cleaning up around the house and had a good relationship with the neighbors
offering them rice cakes and sweet sake during the New Year holidays
She continued to pay the monthly dues for the neighborhood association until August
and no one seemed to notice the poverty of the household
the son said his mother was born in the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture and was orphaned during World War II
The family of three originally lived in an apartment complex in another part of Takaishi
The son didn’t attend elementary and junior high schools
and instead studied under the tutelage of his mother
and he was a kind child who never spoke ill of others,” said a 50-year-old company employee who had frequently played with the son when they were small
“I never knew they were unregistered,” said the former neighbor who was once invited for a meal at the family’s house
The head of the neighborhood association who lives nearby also expressed regret for what happened
“I wish they had come to us for help much sooner,” he said
“They might have had feelings of guilt for being unregistered.”
the son is currently receiving medical treatment and is preparing to create an individual “koseki,” or family registration
The Takaishi city government accepted the death notification of the father
who had a family registration and a registered residence
according to officials at the citizens’ affairs division
The officials said they are not required to check if other people live in a house or look into other details when they receive a notification of death
Although various other sections of the city government had some involvement with the mother and the son
A city public relations official explained that the law prohibits personal information obtained by an administrative organ from being used by another division beyond the original purpose
“No city officials had come into contact with the two,” the official said
“It was difficult for us to learn about them because there are many people who hide the fact that they are unregistered.”
The central government estimates that about 900 people in Japan do not have a family registration
birth notifications for 70 percent of them were not submitted to authorities because the parents wanted to avoid application of a much-criticized provision of the Civil Law
It states that a child born to a woman within 300 days of her divorce is considered the child of her former husband
A Tokyo-based civic group that supports families with unregistered children estimates there are about 10,000 such people in the country
Some of them were not registered because they were born in the turmoil during and after World War II
points out the danger of unregistered people growing old and falling through the safety net of welfare and other public support
“I hope the central and local governments strongly recognize that the case involving the mother and the son is just the tip of the iceberg,” Ide said
Many people who are unregistered believe that they are “illegal and wrong,” so they are hesitant to ask neighbors or administrative offices for help
they still can receive various support and administrative services
including livelihood assistance,” Ide continued
“I encourage them to seek help from support groups and municipal governments.”

a hilarious Japanese comedy-thriller about two mismatched women forced to be roommates but find being contract killers harder than living together
You might wonder if we need any more contract killer movies
a comedy about two 20-year-old women who enter the lucrative world of assassinations but are forced to be roommates
It's like Ghost World if the two girls were contract killers
Saori Izawa is an MMA fighter and stunt performer who has been in several major movies
Akari Takaishi is an accomplished stage actress with a rising career in film and television
antisocial Mahiro as barely functional in society while Takaishi plays the chirpy
who seems to fit in better until she cracks and goes full psychopath
These baby assassins make the funniest double act on screen for ages as they deal with trying to be adults in a contemporary Tokyo
living in a cramped apartment together with very little in common
and jaded as they reluctantly try to stick to the rules of their management company and find crappy part-time jobs as part of their cover
Cue satirical commentary about the gig economy and contemporary Tokyo life
Their jobs put them in the sights of a Yakuza and his overly enthusiastic daughter
whose enjoyment of the criminal life mirrors Chisato's own goofy glee
Baby Assassins is what Quentin Tarantino calls a "hangout movie," where the real appeal is watching fun
likable characters hang out with each other
Izawa and Takaishi spend as much of the movie just getting up to hijinks with each other in what look like semi-improvised comedy setpieces
whether it's arguing over who should kill a target
eating too noisily at home and annoying each other or asking to borrow a gun like they're borrowing a shirt
the most seemingly mundane activity is reconfigured into a surreal and hilarious moment by the fact that they're contract killers
The world created in the movie is an off-kilter world
Even the brutal Yakuza boss tries hard to be a cool dad to his lunkhead son
who just wants to be a stereotypical gangster
and his slightly more savvy daughter as he teaches her the ropes and declares the Yakuza needs to create a better environment for women to work in
Baby Assassins delivers with a climax that pulls everything together in a rousing
elaborately choreographed shootout and fight
the latter highlighting Izawa's skills as a fighter and stunt performer that could be a new classic in modern martial arts cinema
But what makes it all matter is the chemistry between Izawa and Takaishi that makes them fun to watch and hang out with
reluctantly trying to adult when they'd rather just spend time watching viral videos on their phones and getting paid for shooting bad people
because audiences feel like these two women who are just like us
Baby Assassins is streaming on Prime, VOD and is available on physical media now. WellGo USA continues to bring us great genre movies from Asia

To evaluate our recent treatment strategy for intramedullary spinal cord tumors
We reviewed 68 cases of intramedullary tumors (ependymoma
There were 42 males and 26 females whose mean age at the time of surgery was 43 years
The tumor malignancy grade according to the WHO classification was astrocytoma grade I
Three of the 12 hemangioblastomas were associated with von Hippel–Lindau disease
Total excision was achieved in 90% of the ependymomas and functional improvement was obtained when the preoperative neurological deficit was mild
Approximately 50% of low-grade astrocytomas could be totally excised with favorable survival outcomes
suggesting that total excision should be attempted for low-grade astrocytomas
total excision of high-grade tumors was difficult and the functional outcomes were poor
Cordotomy should be considered in patients with a thoracic high-grade astrocytoma
Total resection was possible in 92% of hemangioblastoma
more attention should be paid for tumors with feeding arteries on the ventral side and for those associated with von Hippel–Lindau disease
Predictors of good surgical outcome for intramedullary spinal cord tumors were histological grades of the tumors
and neurological status of the patient before surgery
the three most common intramedullary tumors of the spinal cord
that were treated surgically at our hospital during the recent 10 years
to elucidate the problems associated with surgery
and to validate our treatment strategy for intramedullary spinal cord tumors
The prognosis of ependymomas thus appears to be favorable
with 32 (97%) of the 33 patients still surviving
One patient had underlying pulmonary fibrosis and developed pneumonia and died of respiratory failure 3 months postoperatively
Functional outcomes of the patients with ependymoma
Changes in the severity of paralysis by the modified Frankel grade before surgery and at the final examination
Total resection was achieved in six of the 11 cases of low-grade astrocytomas. Total resection could not be performed in one case because of frequent decreases in intraoperative spinal evoked potentials, and biopsy alone was performed in other four cases, because the boundary between the tumor and the spinal cord was indistinct (Table 2)
subtotal and partial resections were performed in one case each
Spinal cord transection was supplemented in a two-stage manner in two patients with a thoracic astrocytoma
who initially had partial resection or biopsy of the tumor
(a) Cumulative survival curve of the patients with astrocytoma. (b) Impact of the tumor pathological grade on the survival of the patients with astrocytomas: there was a significant difference in survival between patients with the low-grade and high-grade astrocytomas (Breslow–Gehan–Wilcoxon's test, P=0.001).
Impact of the surgical procedure on the survival of the patients with astrocytoma: (a) low malignancy group, (b) high malignancy group.
Impact of the level of astrocytomas on survival: there was no significant difference in the survivals between patients with cervical cord and thoracic cord astrocytomas
Functional outcomes in the patients with astrocytoma: change in the severity of paralysis by the modified Frankel grade before surgery and at the final examination
Total resection was possible in 11 of the 12 cases (Table 2)
because there were multiple feeder vessels in the ventral aspect of the tumor
it was difficult to control intraoperative bleeding
which resulted in partial resection despite two operations
Functional outcome of hemangioblastomas
(a) Change in the severity of paralysis by the modified Frankel grade before surgery and at the final examination
(b) Changes in clinical symptoms before surgery and at the final examination
Early-onset complications developed in eight patients (12%)
Five patients developed major early-onset complications
Two patients had a cerebrospinal fluid leak
which were treated successfully by lumbar drainage
Two patients developed aspiration pneumonia requiring intravenous antibiotics
and in one patient with a high cervical tumor
postoperative extubation was unsuccessful requiring a tracheostomy
Urinary tract infection developed in three patients as minor early-onset complications and were treated with oral antibiotics
Adherent arachnoiditis developed in one patient (1.5%) with hemangioblastoma as a late-onset complication and was treated surgically
concluded that early diagnosis and early surgery
are important to obtain good functional outcomes in cases of ependymomas
Early surgery may be particularly important in cases with the tumors arising in the thoracic cord
The functional outcomes were also much better than those in the patients with ependymomas or astrocytomas
but because of the high possibility of persistent paresthesia and pain after surgery
it is most important to obtain preoperative informed consent
when a hemangioblastoma is associated with von Hippel–Lindau disease
it is important to exercise care to prevent the development of adhesive arachnoiditis due to repeated surgeries to prevent aggravation of paralysis
predictors of good surgical outcome for intramedullary spinal cord tumors were histological grades of the tumors
surgical margins and neurological status of the patient before surgery
In cases of intramedullary spinal cord tumors
are important to obtain good functional outcomes
Surgery for intramedullary spinal cord tumors should aim at complete removal of ependymomas
low-grade astrocytomas and hemangioblastomas
Because radical surgery is extremely difficult for high-grade astrocytoma
saving the patient's life by spinal cord transection would be a reasonable choice for high-grade thoracic cord astrocytomas

Having established a prolific career working on the stunts for Machine Girl
Kensuke Sonomura channels his decades of experience into Ghost Killer
to deliver a zany and action-packed outing
genre fans are nevertheless bound to have a blast here
with a script penned by franchise creator Yugo Sakamoto
the plot follows college student Fumika (Takaishi) become haunted by the ghost of recently murdered hitman Hideo (Masanori Mimoto) when she finds the bullet that killed him
When it’s discovered that he’s able to possess her body
effectively turning her into an unstoppable fighting machine
they decide to form a pact to enact vengeance on Hideo’s killer so that his spirit can leave Fumika alone
Before the unlikely duo get to the vengeance part of the plot
viewers will have to sit through a lot of extraneous material as the pair learn to work together while taking care of some other problems
which can only be solved by beating up some bad guys
While the onscreen violence doesn’t reach the same levels of insanity and gore as Machine Girl
the action is fast and fluid and each blow lands with a satisfying squelch or crunch
is Takaishi’s scene-stealing dual performance
Playing both the non-violent student and a possessed Fumika
the star effortlessly switches between both roles during brawls to deliver what are this flick’s best gags
Although there’s plenty of joy to be found within Ghost Killer’s creative action and offbeat humour
its blend of comedy and thriller doesn’t always work as intended
In addition to slapstick that often doesn’t stick the landing
Hideo’s quest for revenge likewise follows a generic route that lacks surprises
A rushed final act that sees an ultimately inconsequential antagonist meet a disappointingly quick end also dulls the excitement and leaves this movie feeling underwhelming at points
Its combination of genres doesn’t always hit the mark
is a whole lot of guilt-free fun that’s filled with excellent action and a superb performance from Takaishi
Ghost Killer does not have a release date yet

Noosa Lions Senior Men’s team got their season underway on the first day of Autumn
Mitchell Bridge and Jack Williams were supplemented by a fine strike from Nick Cookman
a deft finish from the hard-working Oli Williams and goals from substitutes Harry Magee and Will Graham
Michael Williams stepping up into the Coach’s role alongside Matt Digwood with support from Matt Upton and Craig Thompson
Digwood coached the Under 23’s last season and as the club’s Technical Director
has firsthand knowledge of the depth of talent in the youth ranks at Noosa
Pre-season victories against an Ipswich team and Brighton FC in the Kappa Cup had highlighted the coaching team’s focus on a quick passing game
which was evident throughout this emphatic victory
Cyclone Alfred off the coast added to the wind strength at Girraween
but the slick passing and movement of the Noosa team literally blew Baringa away in a dominant first half performance
The home side going into the break 5-1 in front
though disappointed that they had conceded to Baringa’s solitary attack
led by example with his energy and commitment to every tackle
whilst Ollie Blackmore pulled the strings in central midfield
as Baringa struggled to cope with the pace and movement of the Noosa forward line led by Oli Williams
Takaishi ‘T’ opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a smart finish from a cross by right-back
Mitch Bridge headed home from a Blackmore corner in the 21st minute and scored a second header in the 67th minute
‘T’s second goal was a clinical finish at the near post following a flowing move across the pitch
with Nick Cookman’s long range strike being the pick of the goals
as he timed his connection to another Blackmore corner to perfection
“The boys have been training well and today was a solid performance for our first league game,” Michael Williams said
who was also delighted that despite making five substitutions the team never lost their shape or intensity and scored three goals in the last twenty minutes

and she will be the heroine of the NHK morning drama "Bakeke" in the second half of 2025
It was the first time I'd ever taken a photo where I wasn't really conscious of the camera
As I slowly talked with photographer Masuda Sara about little things I feel in my daily life and stories from the past
I realized the shutter had already been released
The finished photographs had a transience and beauty that reminded me of a moment
Masuda and the rest of the team on this project are very important to me
and I believe that this work is made possible by an invisible thread
I hope that everyone who purchases a copy will continue to share this wonderful Ito message next year as well
