Porous 'Gaps' Create an Integrated Public Space - In pursuit of creating a public space open to all citizens, the design incorporated three halls and ten studios, each designed with 'gaps', promoting the concept of "a theater for strolling, integrated with a park." This approach enables free access to the facilities as if one were meandering through a park, creating an expansive space filled with light and nature. tato architects has built the house in wood while the spaces between the floors were enclosed due to structural limitations by overlaying a diagonal grid rotated at 45° on top of a rectangular shell the japanese architecture studio attempted to create a simple yet complex and cave-like labyrinth captured inside a small house the floor rises from two different points in a spiral to meet on a floor that is the dining and kitchen and separates to finally meet again on the rooftop.  ‘the idea is to create a sense of expansion inside a small house so that you would find yourself on top of a rooftop in one moment the roof is designed to meet the setback regulations and when it was installed on top of the series of floors the site is in a suburban residential neighborhood on a slope developed into terraced plots; the neighboring ground levels are also uneven we thought about using a split-level composition in response to the conditions of the location – this idea eventually inspired the design for this project,’ adds tato architects sixteen different floors were packed into this small house expanding and moving around in different directions to create a functional cave-like foundation to support the life of the residents.’ architect:

COVID-19 patients in Osaka were stratified by disease severity into mild, moderate and severe categories. The analysis included 154 patients admitted with moderate COVID-19 from April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021. Progression to severe classification, ventilation and advanced treatment, and mortality were outcomes in the study. The findings were presented at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions. Of 154 people admitted with moderate COVID-19, 62 were moved to the severe classification and 48 required ventilation. Fourteen patients died of COVID-19 after ventilation was declined by their families; of these, nine had dysglycemia. One person with diabetes experienced a non-lethal cerebral infarction. There were no deaths due to cardiovascular events. Kaneko said the findings highlight the importance of type 2 diabetes control and prevention. Kaneko said a more comprehensive, multicenter study covering all COVID-19 classifications from mild to severe is needed to confirm the findings. Kaneko S, et al. 1090-P. Janus FilmsAlissa Wilkinson covered film and culture for Vox Alissa is a member of the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics.Near the end of Haruki Murakami’s short story “Drive My Car” — on which the multi-Oscar-nominated film is sort of based — two middle-aged men whose wife died years ago after a short bout with cancer the last man with whom Kafuku’s wife had an affair before her diagnosis about Takatsuki’s relationship with his wife and he’s also pretty certain that the other man truly loved his wife and hasn’t recovered from the loss He initiated the friendship with motives that weren’t entirely clear even to himself; he wants to hear more about his late wife but he also wants to better understand her reasons for sleeping with Takatsuki the pair have struck up a companionable and affable relationship without ever revealing to one another what actually happened telling Takatsuki that he grieves not having known his wife as well as he wished he did The other man seems on the verge of revealing what Kafuku already knows but instead his heart opens and he says a wise thing: The proposition that we can look into another person’s heart with perfect clarity strikes me as a fool’s game I don’t care how well we think we should understand them I think it’s possible to see what’s in there if you work hard enough at it So in the end maybe that’s the challenge: to look inside your own heart as perceptively and seriously as you can and to make peace with what you find there we have to start by looking within ourselves Kafuku is startled by the normally reserved Takatsuki’s conviction and clarity “They could see a certain sparkle of recognition in each other’s eyes,” Murakami writes Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s film Drive My Car differs substantially in its details from the story from which it draws its name but this theme — of the strange human struggle to actually know anyone to speak and be heard and understood — ties the two together strongly Hamaguchi used the framework of “Drive My Car” but mixed in two other stories “Scheherazade” and “Kino,” both of which appear with “Drive My Car” in Murakami’s 2014 collection Men Without Women and drew out a brief mention of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya in the original story into a full narrative thread We spend our lives trying to know one another In Hamaguchi’s spin on the story, the intricacies of language serve as a kind of metaphor for communication itself — a metaphor that’s also of a piece with Murakami’s use of the Japanese language Drive My Car locks into this theme and amplifies it across its three-hour runtime tugging at threads in the story and spinning them into variations has died; he never asked her about her actions and now carries around regrets Kafuku is being driven around by a young woman named Misaki who has a tremendously sad past of her own Hamaguchi changed a lot about Kafuku’s life is still alive; in the movie’s first moments she tells him a story that’s actually told by a character in “Scheherazade.” It’s a story about a teenage girl repeatedly sneaking into the home of her crush leaving small possessions behind and taking some of his Kafuku isn’t sure if the story is made up or drawn from his wife’s girlhood; in “Scheherazade,” the same confusion exists between the woman telling the story and the man listening after Kafuku’s wife dies (in this version we jump ahead in time two years and discover that he’s directing a production of Uncle Vanya at a theater festival in Hiroshima The festival has hired Misaki to drive him from his hotel to the rehearsals every day Misaki is about the age that a daughter Kafuku and his wife lost in childhood would be Takatsuki (younger in the film than in the story but still Oto’s former lover) auditions for Uncle Vanya and is cast — to his consternation — in the lead role Vanya is an old man at 47 (the play is set in the 1890s) whose life is heavy with regret — he has toiled for years at the rural estate of his former brother-in-law and with his reappearance Vanya finds he has nothing of his own Though Takatsuki’s career has run on some hard times thanks to his foolishness he’s still young and full of his own ego Kafuku and Takatsuki strike up an uneasy friendship over late-night whiskey neither quite telling the other what both know about Oto But Hamaguchi weaves elements of “Kino” into Takatsuki’s story (notably a confrontation between him and another man that goes tragically south) and the character becomes not just a figure of uneasiness for Kafuku but a figure of what happens to a man who doesn’t know himself enough to be honest Yet it’s mostly in the way Hamaguchi uses a non-Murakami text — Chekhov’s play — where the themes of Drive My Car start to emerge Kafuku’s production of Uncle Vanya is performed (in a move that’s never explained) with each performer speaking their own language: Mandarin They can’t understand each other; they are responding to something beyond just the words of the play Kafuku’s rehearsal process involves asking them to drain all emotion from their performance letting the words alone take root in them and grip them even when Kafuku’s processes frustrate his cast the actress who communicates in Korean Sign Language tells him that she has found a great deal of healing from her past hurt when she had to quit dancing after a miscarriage But Kafuku’s experience with the play is more complicated At the time he discovered his wife’s infidelity he was performing onstage as Vanya and nearly had a breakdown mid-show; now “Chekhov is terrifying,” he tells someone Some of that has to do with the character of Vanya whose soul has grown twisted with self-pity and rage at the disappointment of life If I live till 60 I have 13 more years to endure What will help me get through the days?” Some of Vanya’s regret and anguish has embedded itself in Kafuku’s lonely heart But Chekhov’s lines have another meaning for Kafuku: They’re his last tenuous connection to Oto though Kafuku is being shuttled around by Misaki because he’s acting in a production of Uncle Vanya.) Before Oto died she recorded one side of Uncle Vanya on cassette tapes so that he could practice his lines while he drove in his car though he’s not performing Vanya himself the words she says mediated through the tape deck Yet her persisting presence has also rankled in his soul because the question of why he couldn’t really know Oto fully the idea that it’s possible to see someone fully can only cause us pain because “it’s a fool’s game.” Talking trying to make oneself known — we might as well be playing roles on a stage mean so much in the end to Kafuku; as he says they “drag out the real you.” Portraying a man who is so weary of life he wants to die reserved Kafuku can tap into the emotions he’s buried deep inside It’s only in confronting his feelings of regret that Kafuku can find a way to move beyond his grief and care for others again but for the first time in a long time he can reach across the divide of language and self and feel once more is built around what Takatsuki says to Kafuku both at the bar in the story and in a car after a moment of decisive violence in the film: that the work of life is to seriously look inside ourselves and make peace with what we find That “if we hope to truly see another person we have to start by looking within ourselves.” In the place where language falls away we come to terms with what we’ve lost in the past Drive My Car is playing in theaters and streaming on HBO Max Understand the world with a daily explainer plus the most compelling stories of the day Here’s why your potentially romantic meetup actually sucks. Celebrating community and volunteerism at the Brazilian Consulate our students are shining a light on some inspiring LGBT figures you may not of heard of from the field of conflict and security MA International Relations student Mari Takatsuki tells us about Phyllis Arby (sometimes spelt Phillis Arby) a member of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in the United States during the Second World War You may know Phyllis Arby from propaganda images of the Second World War. Joining the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) in 1943 she came to represent the image of WAAC - patriotic and hardworking far from the heteronormative ideals of 1940s America Arby was a lesbian who had spent her life facing discrimination against her sexuality Born in 1920, her teenage years were full of hardships. After writing a love letter to a girl at her school, she was expelled and kicked out of her home by her father, before moving to New York to live with her mother. For Arby, enlisting in the WAAC during the Second World War was a brief escape from societal norms that she struggled to fit into. She enjoyed wearing the uniform, and was able to meet other lesbians there although she still had to hide her sexuality Homosexuality was criminalised until 1962 across most States and military servicemen could not be ‘openly gay’ in the United States until as late as 2011. In a documentary film entitled Coming Out under Fire she recalled that she was asked if she had had sex with men and replied no with acceptable but false reasons While taking a course in radio repairing at the United Radio Television Institute, she met Mildred and their relationship began. Both Arby and her lover were selected to feature in their recruitment propaganda, although the military had no idea and no intention of of recruiting lesbians. Although she continued a relationship with Mildred after the war they separated when she went to college at the University of Nevada in Reno There she met a man named Abe Kaplan whom she married in 1950 and raised four children with Prior to her death, she looked back on her life stating, "I could never forget who I really was.” Phyllis Arby's story highlights the double identity that LGBT + service personnel had to lead being forced to hide their sexuality due to fear of dismissal it became a choice between career and having a fulfilling relationship this ban leading to many servicemen and women being ostracised and shamed by the country they sought to protect King’s College London recently launched an AI in Education free to access course Muscle cells contain their own circadian clocks and disrupting them with shift work can have a… The School of Life Course & Population Sciences and King’s Population Health Institute welcomed… Halting the building of new homes could help to address the dramatic decrease in the number and… +44 (0)20 7836 5454 Yo Takatsuki Yo Takatsuki is the Global Head of Investment Stewardship as part of the Sustainable Investing Team Yo is responsible for engaging with corporate directors and management on investment issues involving stewardship and social and environmental sustainability in EMEA He is also responsible for advising analysts and portfolio managers regarding the E S and G profiles of the companies in which we invest and co-ordinating proxy voting activity.Prior to joining the firm in February 2021 Yo was the Head of ESG Research and Active Ownership at AXA Investment Managers and was also at BMO Global Asset Management for seven years where he headed up engagement He also spent decade as a business journalist in broadcast at the BBC University of London's Business School and an Batchelor's degree from the University of Cambridge Analysis The rise of transition ETFs: Progress or platitude?Lauren Gibbons Copyright 2025 ETF Stream. It’s an exquisite Tower of Babel of a film—a thrilling mélange of Japanese with the crucial addition of Korean Sign Language are braided throughout (the gorgeous signing by the actress Park Yurim just about breaks your heart) “Drive My Car” is nominated for Best International Feature—if it doesn’t win in that category Captioning is both layered onto and represented in the film: it is a theatrical director known for his unconventional methods casts a play with actors of diverse nationalities who perform their roles in their native tongue When we first see him on stage (he’s by turns an actor and director) he’s playing Vladimir in Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot,” speaking his lines in Japanese; the production’s Estragon replies in Indonesian The film’s subtitling game is so strong that it requires three distinct typographies: roman type for translation from Japanese; roman type in parentheses for translations from all other languages (in the U.S English is not subtitled); and italic for translations of sign language as well as from signage (“Flowers & Vegetables For Sale” at a roadside shop) The film immerses us in what the French literary theorist Roland Barthes called “the pleasure of the text,” and the film proves to be a master class in one of his key concepts: intertextuality every text is woven together from disparate elements—among them is “a tissue of quotations drawn from the innumerable centres of culture.” A film that takes its title from and announces itself as “based upon” a Haruki Murakami short story would seem to be explicitly acknowledging its literary debts “Drive My Car” does lean most heavily on the Murakami story of the same name (“Doraibu mai kā” in the original Japanese publication) but while “Drive My Car” provides the film’s spine Hamaguchi has said that he found the story’s ending “abrupt,” telling an interviewer “I felt like I needed to take that story somewhere beyond where it ends on the page.” He found the material to do so in two other stories from the 2014 collection in which “Drive My Car” appeared The film’s most important and explicit intertext is Anton Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya”; the play’s titular character is Kafuku’s signature role as an actor and most of the film focusses on a production he’s been brought to Hiroshima to direct It’s a play he literally knows by heart—not just his role While being driven the hour to and from the theatre every day in which Vanya’s lines are left out; he supplies them from the back seat This preparation is part of the Kafuku “method.” “The flow of the entire play,” he explains to his driver We’ve recently been reminded by Isaac Butler’s new book of the lasting influence of Method acting is resolutely anti-Method: submit yourself to the text without any preconceptions read the text without supplying any external emotions He attempts to impose this discipline on Koshi Takatsuki (Masaki Okada) the young actor whom he’s cast as his Vanya K: You don’t have to “do better.” Just simply read the text She all but cries out the quintessential (or clichéd) question of the Method actor: “What’s my motivation?” For Kafuku fully intends for Chekhov to terrify Takatsuki in a very particular way without having confided it either to Takatsuki or to Oto before her death In a twist on Prince Hamlet’s play within a play Kafuku believes that “Vanya” is the thing wherein he’ll catch the conscience of—well Takatsuki (as Vanya) is visibly shaken to be drawn into exchanges such as these: Voynitsky [Vanya]: She’s a good friend of mine Shakespeare’s Claudius only had to sit in the audience while his treachery was hinted at; Kafuku makes Takatsuki confess his infidelity in front of his director The film’s most powerful narrative device is a near-continuous deployment of this type of dramatic irony It’s not there in any of the Murakami source material; along with screenwriter Takamasa Oe Hamaguchi has realized the eerie dramatic potential of Chekhov’s words when wrested from their original context We’re first made aware of the uncanny relevance of the text of “Vanya,” written more than a century earlier But “Vanya” takes him right back to the scene he’s trying to forget: Astrov: [read on the tape by Oto] You envy him but the point is clear: Chekhov’s text is dragging out the real Kafuku to have the conversation he was never able to broach with his wife in real life the film’s editing makes it difficult to know when Kafuku is playing Vanya and when he’s in propria persona After a jump cut places his car in one of the film’s innumerable tunnels we hear Kafuku speaking: “There must be something How am I supposed to live out those thirteen years?” Is it live The film is filled with such uncanny moments though many aren’t obvious until a second viewing sitting in the back seat of the Saab with Kafuku recites dialogue from a story that Oto has told him; it ends with him voicing the protagonist’s confession: “I killed him I killed him!” We in the audience don’t yet know that minutes earlier Takatsuki has beaten up a fan who has invaded his privacy and even Takatsuki doesn’t yet know that the fan will die of his injuries When the Hiroshima police show up at rehearsal to arrest him for the killing Takatsuki has just shot Serebryakov on the stage Sometimes these intertextual echoes simply provide grace notes Kafuku is diagnosed with glaucoma in his left eye and prescribed eye drops to reduce the ocular pressure avoiding the talk that his wife has requested—and which he fears will signal the end of is in the midst of her closing monologue: “And when our last hour comes we’ll go quietly And in the great beyond we’ll say to Him that we suffered with tears of prescription eye drops rolling down his cheek Kafuku’s “method” is intended precisely to keep the actor and their role separate; Vanya is a place to which he retreats in order to avoid the unresolved conflicts in his marriage and his life Kafuku is back on the boards as Vanya; but when he comes to lines that have already struck us in the audience as uncomfortably ironic—those quoted above that he recites as he drives away from the scene of his wife’s infidelity—their weight becomes too much for him to bear leaving the other actors to improvise around his absence In the sleek confessional of Kafuku’s Saab Watari becomes his unlikely confessor; she is able to recognize as confession the dialogue that he thinks of as Chekhov’s The film takes the time that’s required to make us believe in the relationship that grows between them but you don’t begrudge it—not often does one learn that a two-hundred-minute film was edited down to three hours and desperately want to see those twenty lost minutes and through the surprisingly wise advice of none other than Takatsuki Kafuku is able to bring together the role and the life to find the middle ground between Stanislavski’s Method and his own When he first meets Watari and is told that she will be his driver Kafuku is quietly furious: he wants to drive his own car While we’re never going to hear him belt out the Beatles song’s refrain he’s recognized the importance of letting someone else take the driver’s seat A long-ago crime, suddenly remembered A limousine driver watches her passengers transform The day Muhammad Ali punched me What is it like to be keenly intelligent but deeply alienated from simple emotions? his young professor have had supernatural experiences in their childhoods We know the truth about Naoya because his first-person narration of the event opens the novel; Takatsuki's experience is a Japanese student who came to Vancouver to study only to find herself expelled after questioning the education she was provided by a third-party international school It’s a case that Surrey lawyer Ryan Kusuhara says raises “curious” questions about how international education is delivered and regulated in B.C “It is curious that this institution under the notice of civil claim claims to be a registered corporation in the Philippines,” said Kusuhara representing Japanese student Saki Takatsuki The “Concordia International University” pamphlet initially provided to Takatsuki “gives an ordinary person the impression you’ll be receiving a Canadian education from Concordia in Canada as opposed to simply Cloud Nine College,” which is the third-party international school Concordia contracted Those alleged representations from Concordia International College of Asia and The Pacific form the basis of Takatsuki’s counterclaim against Concordia International the company is incorporated in the Republic of the Philippines It works with “local agencies in foreign countries to recruit international students,” who pay the agencies tuition fees Cloud Nine in downtown Vancouver is the “hosting school” for the advertised two-year program in B.C Takatsuki paid about US$28,000 in August 2021 to attend university if they complete a one-year English plan and a one-year co-op plan via Cloud Nine Takatsuki started her program but by September "made several complaints to Concordia regarding the program’s course arrangements universities available to students,” stated Concordia in its claim Takatsuki was then “abusive” to Cloud Nine staff and subsequently expelled; Takatsuki demanded a refund but was denied because she had exceeded 30 per cent of the academic year — the threshold for a refund Takatsuki made defamatory statements online about the college that were motivated by “malice.” Concordia’s lawyer David Chen sent Takatsuki a cease and desist letter on Oct 2022 and later filed a lawsuit against the student Takatsuki has denied she made the defamatory statements including from Twitter and YouTube accounts Concordia alleges were created by Takatsuki university options were limited upon arrival The alleged deficiencies of Concordia’s offerings as compared to its advertisements are denied by Concordia Both sides are seeking damages from one another None of the allegations have been proven in court Takatsuki told Glacier Media the saga with Concordia has placed financial pressure on her as the money she paid came from student loans back home She said she has since moved to Edmonton with her partner and continues to seek education in Canada Takatsuki said a legal trial was not on her radar when coming to Canada “I still feel I don’t get anything (about) what’s going on,” said Takatsuki There are no claims made by or against Cloud Nine College which is a certified institution by the B.C government Private Training Institutions Branch Cloud Nine College was found to have contravened the Private Training Regulation by failing to refund tuition within 30 days of the date on which the first 30 per cent of the hours of instruction are provided Kusuhara said he is still understanding how the case could shed light on how international education institutes are regulated in B.C Glacier Media has reached out to Concordia’s counsel for an opportunity to provide further comment on the case but had not received a response by deadline [email protected] Your browser does not support JavaScript, or it is disabled. Please check the site Shogi Association A joint fund-raising program between the city and the association was suggested at the same time so that donations would be solicited under the “furusato nozei” hometown tax contribution system Inoue was astonished at the offer because he believed Kansai Shogi Hall would be rebuilt on the same grounds or be moved within Osaka city after the relocation of its Tokyo counterpart As the Japan Shogi Association was struggling to cover the estimated 1.3 billion yen ($9.7 million) or more for the facility’s relocation the suggested financial assistance was “welcome news” for the shogi community The association decided on the relocation plan at a special meeting in February 2021 given the city’s location that pro shogi players in the capital can reach the facility 20 minutes faster than at present by changing trains at JR Kyoto Station The shogi headquarters in western Japan will move from Osaka’s Fukushima Ward to Takatsuki in autumn 2024 who is noted for winning the prestigious Ryuo crown among his other titles and other players throughout the country are expected to compete in the bedroom suburb with a population of 350,000 “Having to leave the current place full of memories brings a sense of sorrow to me but I am looking forward to finding good eateries in Takatsuki for my improved performance,” Inoue said According to more than one association insider multiple shogi players have already decided to move to Takatsuki the city government is staging a crowdfunding drive for donations Donors contributing 50,000 yen will have their names inscribed at the relocated hall one can receive a folding fan featuring a Fujii match as well More than 210 million yen poured in under the campaign in fiscal 2021 and the municipality is continuing to solicit funds to achieve the final goal of 500 million yen Labeling itself as a “town of shogi,” Takatsuki plans to organize a shogi competition for children A match in the Osho championships will be held there on Jan where Osho-titled Fujii will battle Yoshiharu Habu who is considered one of the all-time greatest shogi players Takatsuki prides itself on its deep links with shogi Many shogi pieces dating to the Edo Period (1603-1867) have been discovered in the former site of Takatsuki Castle famed for its Christian feudal lord Takayama Ukon (1552-1615) It is also well known for its bonds with some ex-shogi title holders who described the city as “my memorial place,” is among shogi pros who have fond connections with Takatsuki Urano first saw his 8-dan teacher with a friend The retired professional player Nakai was operating a shogi school around the time at his row house which is a three-minute walk from the planned site of the new Shogi Hall Urano recalled the smiling Nakai was surrounded by elderly individuals shop owners and company employees studying shogi in a space with five shogi boards Urano alike said he saw his bedridden teacher shed tears in pleasure hearing about Urano’s rapid rise in shogi circles a year before Nakai’s death at age 88 he would be content with the relocation plan while smiling,” said Urano expressing his special Since those early days he has maintained a consistent style that seems to strike a chord among readers He started drawing manga on the environment in 1978 At the time there was a debate in Kyoto about the growing litter problem from discarded soft drink cans and many discussed the responsibility of the industries that had introduced disposable containers into the market along with the need for measures to prevent littering Hoping to raise public awareness about the litter problem Takatsuki created and printed at his own expense a publicity campaign-style booklet of his manga he has contributed two comics entitled "Gomic Haikibutsu" (Garbage Cartoon) to every issue of the monthly industry journal Haikibutsu (The Monthly Waste) The title of these comics conveys his questioning about our lifestyles that waste precious things These comics have gradually expanded from initial themes of garbage and waste problems to environmental issues as a whole Each set of 100 manga are compiled into books and published as a collection in print about once every four years The Gomic manga was featured for a few years in a biweekly series "Learning Ecology by Professor High Moon's Cartoon," in the local pages of the Kyoto Shimbun newspaper since April 2016 One cartoon was selected from his collection each time and combined with a commentary to help readers learn about that particular issue "Picturecology" was published in 1990 as a picture book consisting of illustrations and stories It contained his works that had been published in the bimonthly newsletter of the Chubu Recycle Citizens' Organization The book clearly explains various environmental issues with data and illustrations The material was updated and reprinted a number of times and republished as a separate book containing 87 works in 2002 the Japan Environmental Exchange (J.E.E.) began publishing an Eco-Calendar on an environmental theme featuring important environment-related dates each calendar year The 13 manga illustrations on the cover and monthly calendar pages convey Japanese and English bilingual messages for the environmental movement It has been published annually for 30 years It appeared in a promotional magazine of a department store from 2011 to 2014 to introduce environmentally friendly products with his illustrations in a fun way the image below was to introduce recycled Japanese fashion items such as Japanese-style bags and sandal thongs originally made from used kimonos and traditional obi-belts of customers The environmental NGO Japan for Sustainability (JFS served as chief executive) posted on illustration a month from "Cartoon Gomic" with an English translation as "Eco Manga" on its website The series carried a total of 187 illustrations between June 2003 and 2018 when JFS ended active operations The information from JFS reached a high-interest global audience of individuals concerned about sustainable society The Eco Cartoons always ranked high in web traffic which attests to the quality and clarity of the message JFS held a Cartoon Popularity Contest for readers to choose their favorites and the following ones came in as the top three Takatsuki also serves as the director of the Miyako Ecology Center established in 2002 in Kyoto to commemorate the third Session of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP3) The Center aims to expand environmental education and environmental conservation activities The Center's website carries the following director's greeting from Takatsuki the Earth we are living on is in some trouble at the moment We are also facing resource and energy issues which lead to waste problems and water issues The Miyako Ecology Center is a place to study such global environmental issues and think about how we can save the Earth "Eco-mate" volunteers are waiting to show you around the Center Let's study environmental issues together and think about what we can do about them the Miyako Ecology Center provides a wide range of environmental education programs to bring together many people and NPO workers from Japan and around the world It aims to be a place for the following three purposes: The Center's website features Takatsuki's illustrations adding a touch of color in many places It represents the planet Earth and is nicknamed "Chikyumaru" ("chikyu" meaning earth + globe It depicts a troubled character with a high fever "I'll get better if everyone leads an environmentally friendly way of life!" See our ethics policy Painter’s Tape resides in a diminutive strip mall just a few steps from the center of Gardena’s bustling restaurant scene on the corner of Western and Redondo Beach Boulevard chef-like approach to breakfast and lunch that seems to defy an easy categorization as Painter’s Tape works an unconventional approach to things as simple as waffles or a fried chicken sandwich has made this neighborhood spot a reflection of his upbringing The name recalls Takatsuki’s family business which was once a busy painting company in the South Bay Takatsuki trained everywhere from Payard and Le Bernardin in New York City to locally at M.B The idea was to bring “something cool” to Gardena which isn’t lacking for interesting food options especially when it comes to international cuisines there’s a massive collection of places with Thai food But Painter’s Tape is nothing like those places where a bar-height table holds copies of the menu and sushi bar-style checklist menus to make ordering (and eventual dish delivery) easier The menu is segmented into breakfast-y things Those looking forward a kind of straightforward morning meal can get soft cheesy scrambled eggs rosti potatoes with a pho sour cream and crunchy bean sprouts or potatoes ‘saltado,” the latter of which came out a bit mushy truly remind one of the Vietnamese soup and cost a mere $6 the fresh bean sprouts adding a pleasant crunch The stewed organic rice is the most Baroo-like of the offerings a gentle savory porridge with tabs of tangy plum and a soft-boiled egg to bind it all together Red chili corn on a cob might work better if grilled instead of boiled but the spicy aji panca chili butter keeps things interesting If those first few dishes are any indication of the general ingredient pool Takatsuki uses There’s a pepper-fried chicken sandwich with honey mustard and a shabu-shabu steak bun that’s reminiscent of a good roast beef sandwich though the steak sandwich tends to fall apart a bit after a few bites One of Painter’s Tape’s oft-used flavor profiles is the punchy sweet tartness of tomato and it’s used again and again to elevate the dishes And though it’s not very pretty to look at but the execution is more thoughtful than the classic Japanese snack While Takatsuki tends to play around with Latin American or other Asian flavors most of the concepts of each dish tend to start with a Japanese outlook Right now they have an active beer and wine license Another notable element of the restaurant is the service aspect one gets the sense it’s not a full service restaurant once they check off a half-sheet of paper with the items they want and present it to the cashier But things get hairy once seated at a table The checklists are posted vertically for cooks to come and drop off and water are all things diners have to acquire themselves at the front counter diners have to bus their own dishes to a station toward the kitchen It’s all an attempt to reduce the need for a service staff The best part is that not only is there no service charge here there’s not even a tipline on credit card transactions though Takatsuki says folks still leave cash tips in appreciation He’s thankful because that’s the mentality that tipping often has in other parts of the world that tips are just that: extra gratuity without the sense of obligation the locals are pretty content with the new addition Painter’s Tape is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week from 8 a.m
