A Rohingya immigrant in Tokyo is helping other women from her minority group who have fled persecution in Myanmar to learn Japanese and work after fulfilling her own dream of studying at university
was born and raised in Bangladesh where her father had fled after being accused in Myanmar of joining an anti-government movement
she tried to hide her Rohingya origins fearing discrimination and had to repeatedly change schools once her identity was revealed
"I wanted to study at university and do something for others
but it was impossible as a Rohingya," she said
Her turning point came in 2006 when she married a man who had been recognized as a refugee in Japan
she studied at a Japanese language school while earning money through a part-time job
home to the largest concentration of Rohingyas in Japan
she found out that many Rohingya women faced hurdles in everyday life
such as trouble receiving hospital care and communicating with their children's schools
Her first initiative was to start accompanying them to hospitals and schools
She then opened a Japanese language school as a volunteer while offering consultations to help them solve their problems
She has also launched classes to teach English and the Rohingya language to the children of Rohingya immigrants
she conducted graduate studies in human rights and development at Waseda University and joined a company that handles accounting and clerical work
helping other Rohingya women find work there
"I want to focus on women's health and education for children to create an environment where Rohingyas can have dreams," said Khadiza Begum
who now works at a Uniqlo clothing store while continuing her volunteering activities

Japan is currently in the grips of a heatwave that has swept right across the country
Two women have died from heat related illnesses and over 300 people were admitted to hospital with suspected heatstroke by late Saturday
Much of Japan has been has been sweltering for two days now as the temperature topped 35 Celsius on Saturday and Sunday
Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA) have issue extreme temperature warnings with the hot weather expected to continue into the new working week
Central Tokyo saw the temperature reach 33.1 Celsius on Sunday afternoon
This is a full 10 degrees above the seasonal average of 23 degrees
the highest temperature recorded was 36 degrees in Tatebayashi
Oita where the mercury hit 35.6 Celsius on Saturday
Gujohachiman in Gifu Prefecture had a top temperature of 35.1 Celsius and Hiroshima
Fukushima and Samata prefectures all topping 34 degrees
JMA explained that the heat comes courtesy of a large

The Cafe de Staël in the Gunma Prefecture's Tatebayashi City will close on Saturday. The café was the real-life inspiration for the café frequented by the protagonist in the opening episodes of the A Place Further Than the Universe anime
Although the establishment was loved by anime fans and locals alike
the 59-year-old owner Takaaki Maeda made the decision to close the store due to his deteriorating health after he suffered a fall
Maeda suffered a cerebral hemorrhage at the end of September
while the café was temporarily closed in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19
He suffered a fall and was taken to hospital; due to the after-effects
he found it difficult to reopen the business later
His wife Miyoko ran the café during lunch hours in his stead with the help of friends
but he ultimately decided to close the store within the end of the year
"I am full of gratitude to everyone who visited
not just locally but from around the country," Miyoko said
"I am grateful to the A Place Further Than the Universe fans who came from all across the country."
An acquaintance of the couple will open a new café in the new year
which they hope will maintain the establishment's atmosphere and its importance as a pilgrimage spot for fans
and is located close to the Tatebayashi Station
a French painter of Russian origin of whom Miyoko is a fan
The café was loved for its hot dogs and curry rice
When the A Place Further Than the Universe anime started airing in 2018
the café was also coincidentally offering a 200-yen purin dish
which the anime's protagonist is also a big fan of
A Place Further Than the Universe premiered on Japanese TV in January 2018, and was streamed weekly on Crunchyroll
Although the story opens in Gunma Prefecture's Tatebayashi City
it centers on high school girls going to the South Pole

Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are finding a wide range of applications in the forthcoming sustainable society because of their carbon-neutral renewability and superior physicochemical properties
we first show a cooperative organocatalysis by combining TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCN) and proline to enhance the catalytic efficiency in a direct aldol reaction
The yields of proline-catalyzed aldol products drastically increased in the presence of catalytically-inactive TOCN
This effect was also achieved by simply adding the TOCN to the reaction conditions where various proline analogues including structurally simple pyrrolidine and piperidine were used instead of proline
TOCN was superior to physically-pulverized CNF in the organocatalytic efficiency
and the nanofibrillation of cellulose microfibrils in reaction media was essential to induce the drastic enhancement in catalytic activity
The present finding will bring a new entry in the applications of CNFs
and open up a new phase in developing highly efficient molecular transformations in green chemical industries
These applications have been aimed to design structural materials using the superior physical properties of CNFs
Very fine and rigid CNFs are suitable for immobilization and exposure of metal nanocatalysts
Schematic illustration of proline-catalyzed aldol reaction on cellulose nanofiber (CNF)
the reaction using TOCN with lower carboxylate content (0.43 mmol/g-TOCN) proceeded similarly as compared to that with higher carboxylate content (1.68 mmol/g-TOCN)
our method is clearly different from these conventional systems
and the addition of TOCN disclosed here provides an entirely new approach to organocatalytic methodologies
the reaction with the catalysts bearing acid functionalities smoothly afforded the aldol product
whereas other catalysts without acid moieties provided several byproducts along with the desired aldol product
the yield remained low even in the presence of TOCN when pipecolic acid was used as the catalyst (entry 7)
Pipecolic acid probably does not have a catalytic potency
our proposed reaction system would be completely different from the previous ones in the catalytic mechanism
although partial contribution of carboxylate groups cannot be ruled out
Further investigation is now underway in our laboratory to elucidate the evident effect of the crystalline surfaces of CNFs on organocatalytic behavior
an unexpected nature of cellulose nanofibers to enhance significantly the catalytic activity in proline-mediated organocatalytic aldol reaction
Nanofibrillation of cellulose microfibrils is essential for promoting the present reaction system
The novel finding is a new entry in the applications of CNFs
this operationally simple methodology to enhance the catalytic activities brings alternative approaches in developing highly efficient catalytic transformations
carboxylate content; 1.45 mmol/g-TOCN) and never-dried sulfite pulp were kindly supplied by Nippon Paper Industries Co.
Microcrystalline cellulose (Ceolus ST-100) was kindly supplied by Asahi Kasei Corp (Tokyo
Other Chemicals of laboratory grade were purchased from Wako Pure Chemical Industries Ltd
Japan) and used without further purification
Microcrystalline cellulose (4.5 g; Ceolus ST-100
Japan) was suspended in 300 mL of deionized water (1.5 wt%)
The suspension was subjected to the aqueous counter collision method (245 MPa
175 passes) using high-pressure water jet system equipped with a dual-nozzle chamber of 0.1 mm in diameter (Star Burst Labo
The obtained mixture was then centrifuged at 12,000 × g for 20 min to afford 0.6 wt% of cellulose nanofiber water suspension as a supernatant
Never-dried softwood bleached sulfite pulp (31 wt%
9.68 g; 3.0 g of dried form) was suspended in water (300 mL) containing TEMPO (48 mg) and sodium bromide (300 mg)
TEMPO-mediated oxidation was started by adding sodium hypochlorite pentahydrate (4.94 g
10 mmol per gram of cellulose) to the cellulose suspension
The pH of suspension was maintained to be 10 by adding 0.5 M NaOH with a pH stat for 4 h
the oxidation was quenched by adding ethanol (30 mL)
The oxidized cellulose was thoroughly washed with water by centrifugation repeatedly at 4300 × g for 10 min (5 times)
The carboxylate content of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose in a pulp fiber form (TOC pulp) was determined by conductometric titration (carboxylate content; 1.76 mmol/g-TOC pulp)
Water suspension of TOCN (1.0 wt% suspended in water
200 mg of cellulose) was mixed with acetone (30 mL)
followed by centrifugation at 12,000 × g for 30 min
fresh acetone was added and the mixture was centrifuged again
This solvent-exchange treatment was repeated five times
The precipitate of TOCN was suspended in methanol (32 mL) and 4-NBA (200 mg
10 mol% for 4-NBA) were added to the methanol suspension
the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to afford the product as a pale yellow solid
The product was characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectra
The enantiomeric ratio was determined by supercritical fluid chromatography with a chiral stationary phase
Pale yellow solid; supercritical fluid chromatography analysis; AS-3 (CO2/IPA = 85/15

Fujitsu has added two new data center buildings at the Akashi System Center
the company's main data center campus that serves western Japan
The two new buildings are different in size and in level of earthquake resiliency
One of the facilities is seismically isolated and the other is a “standard-spec” data center for lower-cost outsourcing services
While engineers that design data centers in earthquake-prone Japan have traditionally been very conscious of earthquake-proofing the buildings
the industry has been putting a lot more emphasis on this aspect of design since the disastrous Tohoku earthquake in March 2011 that was followed by a tsunami
The top-spec facility (the seismically-isolated one) has capacity for 500 IT racks
and the provider plans to expand it to 1,000
The lower-spec data center supports 100 racks and be expanded to 600
Capacity in the data centers will be expanded incrementally due to the extensive use of modularity in their design
Both data centers take advantage of outside air to reduce cooling costs
The free-cooling capacity can be supplemented with mechanical cooling when necessary
designers of the facilities used computational fluid dynamics simulations for server room layouts
The older data center at the Akashi site was launched in 1997
The company's other main Japanese data center
Fujitsu has about 70 data centers in Japan total and 40 outside of the country
It uses the facilities to provide a variety of ICT outsourcing services
Overall, Japan's data center industry survived the Tohoku earthquake rather well
told us following the disaster that no critical data center failures had been reported to the council
The worst effects of Tohoku for the industry were the rolling brownouts Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) undertook periodically because a substantial portion of its generation capacity had been damaged by the disaster

Miyo Tatebayashi used to live about three miles from the Fukushima nuclear plant
which suffered a crippling accident when the March 11 tsunami struck Japan
she had just returned from a government-organized trip to the radiation zone in Fukushima prefecture along Japan's northeast coast
"When I got out of the bus with my daughter
and the nuclear disaster had irradiated her land
Tatebayashi says she now realizes her life as she has known it is over
crying as a friend comforts her by patting her neck
the Japanese government says eight areas could be too dangerous for humans to live over the next two decades
but many still worry about elevated radiation levels
thousands of students in Fukushima City arrived in class wearing government-issued radiation monitors
Four first-grade students study at the Tomioka Town Joint Temporary School
housed into a soon-to-be-abandoned auto parts factory
is home to refugee pupils from Fukushima prefecture's radiation zone
Tatebayashi lives on the outskirts of Tokyo in an abandoned high school
which serves as an evacuation center for 900 nuclear refugees
ran a cosmetics and clothing shop near the reactors
Yoshioka says life at the center is excruciatingly dull
Yoshioka shares a high school athletic room with 40 people
There's no privacy: Young women dress behind cardboard boxes
Yoshioka marks the days by the movies he watches
He's worked his way through four of the Rocky films
The government has closed most of the major evacuation centers and resettled people in apartments and temporary homes
People who lived a safer distance from the reactors have returned to their routines
but just below the surface there is uncertainty and some fear
'Your kid had this level of radiation,' I can't see whether it means it's safe or not
referring to a government-issued radiation monitor
The local government has decontaminated many schools
has an 8-year-old daughter and has thought about leaving
"I thought it might be dangerous for my child," says Ishizaka
"but there are still so many people that are living here
"I think the government isn't doing enough," she says
The couple is spending a warm Sunday afternoon indoors at a community center because they don't want their daughter
exposed to the higher radiation levels outside
Chitose runs around the community center by herself; a small
pink box swings from a cord around her neck
It's one of 26,000 radiation monitors the Fukushima City government gave students recently
The devices will measure radiation exposure for each child over the next several months
But parents say they're confused because the government still hasn't told them what it considers a safe level of radiation for children
"I just don't know what this is useful for," says Hiroko Ishizaka
'Your kid had this level of radiation,' I can't see whether it means it's safe or not."
This has been a common complaint since the disaster
People say the government is slow to reveal information and explain things
Neither the Fukushima City Education Committee nor the disaster management office could provide a safety standard for the radiation monitors
City officials say it is up to the national government to set them
Local residents walk among debris in Kesennuma
A radiation monitor showed the level of radiation outside Fukushima City Hall was 1.09 microsieverts per hour
an NPR reporter found similar readings around town
Steve Simon is a radiation physicist at the U.S
adding that 1 microsievert isn't dramatically higher than the level of radiation that occurs naturally
"We're talking just a few times larger than background radiation," he says
all the studies that have been found to have effects have been hundreds or thousands or ten of thousands of times."
Would Simon feel safe living in Fukushima City
"I would not have any hesitation about staying there
based on that single bit of information," he says
"That radiation level would not frighten me."
Students Happy To Be 'Back Together Again'
At the Tomioka Town Joint Temporary School
teachers gather each morning to meet students as they get off the bus
The greeting is unusually warm because this is an unusual school
The students used to live in the town of Tomioka
which is near the nuclear plant and is now a no-go zone because of radiation
Teachers spent the summer creating a replacement school in the town of Miharu
Most Tomioka students have scattered since the meltdown
The school is housed in an auto parts factory that's soon to be abandoned
the students — there are only eight — recite their lessons: "I like baseball
a navy blue skirt and sailor's blouse with a neckerchief
He says that after the disasters last spring — earthquake
meltdown — it's nice to be with kids he knows from home
"Very simply: I'm so glad," says Nishiyama

When I traveled to an art museum in Tatebayashi
and I was mesmerized by the pond’s surface turning orange
A local resident taking a walk told me this was a wintering spot for swans from Siberia
I heard on the news that their arrival was peaking
I imagine the birds swimming placidly at twilight
There are said to be more swans this year than usual looking for food at Tataranuma
apparently avoiding the heavy snowfall along the Sea of Japan coast
“Wintering” is the word that pops into my head when I think of migrating birds as human travelers
But what those feathered creatures are after is not mild weather
of the Hagoromo (robe of feathers) legend in many parts of Japan is likened to a swan
she marries the man and has a child by him
But she eventually finds her robe and has to leave
who has researched the Hagoromo legend for years
says in his work “Hakucho” (Swan) that the tradition of ascribing sanctity to swans has to do with the fact that the birds arrive from the north and return to the north
Akaba notes that humans recognize north as the direction where life is “blocked” and also probably as the place where life starts and ends
Poet Yuko Kagiwada (1932-2020) likened the swan to “a soft boat” in one of her haiku

The Anime Tourism Association revealed its 2019 list of 88 anime pilgrimage sites at the 31st Tokyo International Film Festival in Roppongi Hills on October 29. The results are based on a poll conducted on the Anime Tourism Association's website from June to August this year
This year's list features over 20 new series, including A Place Further Than the Universe (Tatebayashi City, Gunma Prefecture), Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale (Tokyo), and Laid-Back Camp (Minobu City
Classic pilgrimage spots such as Hana-Saku Iroha (Yuwaku Onsen, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture) and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Nishinomiya City
Hyogo Prefecture) also made it to the list for the first time
Tsuguhiko Kadokawa, chairman of the Kadokawa Corporation and the Anime Tourism Association
said that last year there was some difficulty in getting the rights cleared with all the Intellectual Property owners within a short space of time
but claimed that they were able to rectify that issue this year
Newly Added Anime Pilgrimage Sites of 2019
Although the Association has not released the results of the fan poll for the 2019 list
they revealed statistics from the poll indicating the popularity of the project overseas
The percentage increased to 75% for the 2019 poll
The top five foreign countries represented in the poll were Taiwan
The Association attributed this to the close physical proximity between those countries and Japan
Voters from those countries also reported higher rates of visiting the pilgrimage sites they were voting for (e.g
39% of Taiwanese voters compared to 22% of Italian voters)
with 70% of them saying they'd been to the sites they selected
Chinese anime pilgrimage fan and influencer Ruǎn Ruǎn Bīng appeared at the event as a guest to give some insight into the Chinese anime pilgrimage community
“Chinese anime fans love going on pilgrimages,” she explained
“It's like seeing the world of the anime come alive.”
According to her, a particularly popular pilgrimage spot among Chinese fans is Tanegashima (Kagoshima Prefecture) from the Makoto Shinkai film 5 Centimeters Per Second
That iconic railroad crossing is not something you'd see at all in China
The mayors of various towns in Japan also came onstage to discuss the impact of anime tourism on their communities
All of them said that they welcome anime tourism
the mayor of Wako City in Saitama Prefecture
said that he was so excited when he heard that the Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend anime would be set in Wako that he watched the entire series and visited all of the locations himself
The 88 anime pilgrimage concept is modeled on Shikoku's 88 Temple Pilgrimage
Japan's most famous Buddhist pilgrimage route

National Report
Chiba Prefecture--Mohammed Salim is despondent this Ramadan
the traditional month of fasting for Muslims
Salim would be meeting up with his friends at a nearby mosque and enjoying a lively meal with them after sunset
he dines quietly with his family at home due to fears of the spread of COVID-19 infection
a member of the oppressed ethnic Rohingya minority from Myanmar who now lives here
said this is the first time in his life to observe Ramadan without going to a mosque
Even during the darkest days of the military junta in Myanmar
The family passes uneasy days in silent prayers to Allah to be merciful
wondering how long their lives will remain on hold
Salim and his family offered sunset prayers
their hands spread in front of their faces in the traditional style of worship
at their home close to Gyotoku Station in Ichikawa
coconut crepes and brightly colored fruits in preparation for Iftar
“I feel sad (at not being able to go to the mosque) because this opportunity means so much to us,” Salim said
Salim was born and raised in a village in western Myanmar close to the border
he high-tailed it to neighboring Bangladesh to escape a crackdown on the Rohingya people
and went on to study at a university in Libya
He arrived in Japan in 2003 through family connections but his application for refugee status was rejected
Salim found work at a factory in Tatebayashi
He obtained long-term resident status and moved to Ichikawa in 2007
They have three sons of kindergarten and elementary school age
whom they brought here in 2017 as persecution against Rohingya intensified in their homeland
The family’s income mostly derives from a halal grocery and kebab restaurant that Salim operates
The restaurant's sales have fallen by half as customers self-isolate at home for fear of becoming infected with COVID-19
“That’s not enough to even pay my shop rent,” Salim said of the financial hardship the family now faces
“We can hardly make a living if things continue like this.”
With schools closed for the time being under an extended state of emergency
Hajera expressed concern about her children and the stress they must feel at being forced to remain home
“Our children are proficient in Japanese because they were born and raised in Japan,” Salim said
“I dearly hope they will also learn the Rohingya language and Islamic teachings
but they are now behind in their schoolwork.”
the family is looking forward to receiving across-the-board cash payments of 100,000 yen ($930) per head under a government emergency economic package to mitigate the effects of the health crisis
“I pay more than 1.5 million yen in tax a year,” Salim said
I am so thankful for the fairness of the system that allows us to receive the payments.”
Myanmar and Bangladesh are among countries that obliged people to remain at home except for essential outings
Although Salim and his family are entitled to live in Japan for the time being
there is little prospect they will be able to return to their homeland anytime soon
Salim said he prays daily that the new coronavirus pandemic will ease
May everybody be able to live a peaceful life,” he said
although indigenous to western Myanmar close to the border with Bangladesh
are denied citizenship in a country that is nearly 90 percent Buddhist and face sustained discrimination and persecution
the International Court of Justice ordered the government of Myanmar to prevent actions that may amount to genocide
The Myanmar government denies it has such an ethnic cleansing policy
Many Rohingya are still living in exile as refugees
Nissan had a lot going for them at Tokyo Auto Salon this year with all the hype surrounding the Fairlady Z34 and the continued interest in the R35 GT-R
The Skyline has taken a backseat to those new models in attention
but there were still some nice examples carrying the torch for fans of the "original" Skyline GT-R's ,as well as the rear-drive Skyline models
I wont be including the R35's in this post because as you know
the new GT-R has become a totally separate model from the Skyline
here's the ER34 Skyline coupe displayed by Cockpit Tatebayashi
the car is designed for both street and circuit use in mind
but it seems there's been a renewed interest in the ER34 models among Japanese tuners lately
but it'll look like one coming up in your rearview
it's Masa Motorsports delivering their signature R34-converted Nissan Stagea goodness
finished just a few days before the show opened
Another example of semi-gloss paint and color-matching lettering on the 19" TE37's
The V36 Skyline (Infiniti G37) is a car that's been regrettably overshadowed by the GT-R
Parked alongside the orange Z and R35 in the Zele International booth was this gorgeous V36 Coupe
the whole package is very tasteful and understated
One of the best "sleeper" cars from this year's show I'd say
This BNR34 seen in the Bridgestone Tire booth is another Cockpit-tuned machine
By now you can probably tell which tuners have relationships with which tire companies
The URAS booth is always as a popular place at Auto Salon as Nomuken's wife slings goods and accessories to showgoers
URAS aero has never been particularly subtle
and the ER34 sedan Type-GT wide-body is no exception
Also shown by URAS was the "Type-GT ER34 ECO"
The concept for this stock-engined two-door Skyline is "good fuel economy with GT looks"
Here's BSK Factory showing that the Spocom look isn't dead yet with their slammed and lambo-doored ER34
Is it bad that I actually kinda liked this thing
the HKS Driving Performer BNR34 in the Advan Wheel booth
HKS may not have had a booth at this year's show
but I'd say this car repped pretty well for them
I hope you guys are ready for some vanning action
there are not too much skyline this year at TAS
I think I am in love with it to stepsAn, it is just the perfect car for the street really. P.S. Heat treated exhaust tips and blue anodized lugs http://ll.dev.speedhunters.com/u/f/eagames/NFS/dev.speedhunters.com/Images/Mike%20Garrett/1JanFeatures/TAS09/gal2.jpg
the V36 has been greatly overshadowed by the Z34 and the GT-R
but I really dont like the 2 door skylines
Nissan is the only company (I feel) that has been able to create a bad a** sedan
Those ER34's look realy outdated when you see a V36 coupe
I hope you are joking when you said u like the green 34
what's teh difference between the ER34 and the BNR34
so I'm glad to see that tuners are still working on the earlier SkylinesHowever
and the new ER34 GT kit is wild?will there be a 'The Kei cars of TAS' covergae
I laugh at the URAS stuff. It is becoming so similar to VeilSide stuff that was made a decade ago
Am I the only oen who loves the v36 skyline
the G35 looked better than the 350z and the G37 continues that tradition by looking better than the Z34
There's no question as to which is the more sporting car(370z)
but there's also no question as to which one I'd own(G37)
nothing is more "Japanese" than those little boxes on wheels:)
Can we please get a desktop from this section
And by that I mean the first pic of the skylines in a row- so nice
better than previous version of the "driving performer"
Sure they may be almost mechanically identical to the R32 GTR and people may think they are kinda "sluggish"
matching kit and purrrr of an exhaust note
I dont really like any of those skylines except the blue cockpit er34 and the hks bnr34
Those uras kits are probably the worst I've ever seen
is there any chance that when Nissan month comes around if you could do a full aritcle on the not-so-well known NISMO 400R (i'm sure you know what it is That is my favourite out of all the Skylines
and as i said it is not too well known.Would be appreciated!!!
nice skylines, would be nice to get the last one as a wallpaper,so nice...
a bit surprised i havent heard news of blitz's rwd manual-equipped gtr here on speedhunters yet aaa

today announced that they have jointly developed technologies for designing eco-friendly datacenters
The technologies include a datacenter operation management system with energy consumption visualization technology, as well as a spot air conditioning system which prevents hot spots from emerging inside the datacenter (patents pending). These technologies promise to reduce CO2 emissions by 40%(1) for IT facilities
which collectively account for over half of datacenter energy consumption
The two companies plan to employ these technologies as the basis for an eco-friendly datacenter solutions business
Fujitsu Limited is currently applying these technologies at the new wing of its Tatebayashi System Center facility
The technologies will be exhibited at the Fujitsu booth at CEATEC Japan 2009 from October 6-10 at Makuhari Messe

In addition to these jointly developed technologies
the new wing of the Tatebayashi System Center will benefit from a facility cooling design that uses outside air
common-area heating utilizing exhaust heat
The two companies are each offering eco-friendly datacenter design solutions. Fujitsu is offering its Green Infrastructure Solution(5), and Fuji Electric Systems is offering Green IDC(6)
Both companies expect that these technologies will be able to rapidly reduce the power consumption
and environmental footprints of the IT facilities at datacenters
and contribute to a reduced environmental footprint for society as a whole
