It takes only about 50 minutes from Tokyo Station on the JR Joban Line to reach Toride Station in Ibaraki Prefecture
it is about a 15-minute walk to a small pier on the Tonegawa river
This is one of the starting points for Ohori no Watashi
a ferryboat service operated by the city of Toride
The Tonegawa river more or less corresponds with the border between Ibaraki Prefecture on the northern bank and Chiba Prefecture on the southern one
also includes a small patch of territory south of the river
The ferry route connects three stops along the river
Two of them are in the larger part of Toride and one is in the Ohori district
every day except Wednesdays and during the New Year holiday season
The ferry takes about 50 minutes to make a circuit of the three stops
a new boat went into service on the route for the first time in about 30 years
The third boat to bear the name Toride-go was designed by Katsuhiko Hibino
who was then dean of the faculty of fine arts at Tokyo University of the Arts
represents the splendor of a moment when the image of the city’s bird
3-meter-wide boat can accommodate up to 12 adults
although the number is currently limited to eight due to the novel coronavirus pandemic
An observation deck has been installed atop the cabin so passengers can enjoy a good view
The fare is ¥200 per section of the course for adults and students of junior high school age or older or ¥100 for elementary school students
A complete round-trip of all three sections costs ¥400
Since the ferry was used by commuters and students in the past
residents of the Ohori district can use the service for free
Passengers can bring a bicycle or motorbike on board at no additional charge
so there are chairs and small flower beds at the pier in the Ohori district
It is an escape from the busy world where passengers can leisurely spend time as they wait for the boat
The Tonegawa is Japan’s second-longest river
the river meandered more and frequently caused floods
Thanks to civil engineering work that started in 1907
which used to be contiguous with central Toride
was left as an enclave on the southern side of the straightened river
Separation from the rest of Toride inconvenienced Ohori district residents in their day-to-day lives
so they started operating a ferry on their own in 1914
This became the basis of the current ferryboat service
To get from central Toride to the Ohori district on foot today
you still have to briefly enter Chiba Prefecture
A 64-year-old man who got off the boat at the Ohori pier said he used to work in Abiko for a long time
“This is the first time I used the ferry,” he said
Even when expressways are badly congested with traffic
clouds and water and listen to birds chirping.”
“I really hope many people will appreciate that there is nothing special here
and yet feel how great it is,” said Masahiro Kuribayashi
I think it would be great to let your mind drift and reset here.”

I was especially excited for one of my favorite restaurants to reopen
is back with a new menu by chef de cuisine MiJin Kang Toride
Toride took over from Lineage’s founding chef Sheldon Simeon early this year
just weeks before the unfolding pandemic shuttered Hawaii restaurants
I met her in 2015 when she was chef de cuisine at Andaz Maui’s Kaʻana Kitchen and knew she was one to watch
She had worked at Michelin-starred Terra in St
On Maui she opened her own catering business
and a food truck called Mendo that specialized in ramen and dumplings
See also: These Maui restaurants are open for dine-in and takeout
citing a need to spend more time with his family
stepped back from the ABC Stores-backed restaurant whose food and setting told the story of his life
the transition was so seamless people didn’t realize Simeon had left
and you can find him on the other side of the island with his wife
So what’s Lineage like without Simeon
See also: Preview: Sheldon Simeon’s new Lineage
His influence is still there—from the graphical map of his hometown of Hilo on the wall to the servers’ palaka uniforms to the bottles of his chili pepper water
Toride wants to keep these elements to honor his vision while evolving Lineage to express her own ideas and Korean heritage
especially her grandmother’s soulful cooking. Along with Toride
bar manager April Leslie and general manager Melanie Wicker complete the new all-female leadership team
I tasted some dishes at a recent media event
The new menu is decidedly less Filipino and more Chinese- and Korean-inspired with entrees like Korean fried chicken
garlic Szechuan noodles and honey garlic shrimp—dishes that are approachable and familiar
Pupus coming around on dim sum carts are gone
but a few old favorites like the kimchee dip and smoked pork remain on the menu
which is back to family-style. Ethnic food
especially Asian, is a rarity in Wailea
so hats off to Lineage for helping to fill this void in an elevated way
See also: Thanks, Sheldon
It’s also worth noting the menu is lighter and more vegetarian-friendly than before with produce from farmers on Maui
These translate into a more affordable menu. I can see myself coming back with friends for cocktails and small plates
especially for a small birthday celebration or special occasion
Toride plans to continue experimenting and evolving. She wants to offer pop-ups
retail products and cook-at-home meal kits in the future. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with

has recently signed agreements with Japanese junior and senior high schools to help them offer a curriculum that will improve the financial literacy of students
The move comes after financial education was made compulsory in public senior high schools last year along with the country lowering the age of adulthood to 18 from 20
The government of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has made an effort to encourage people to invest their wealth as it seeks to double the amount of investment income generated by each household
Toshimagaoka Joshigakuen Junior and Senior High School in Tokyo signed the agreement on Feb
followed by Edogawa Gakuen Toride Junior High School and Senior High School in Ibaraki Prefecture on Feb
and Seigakuin Junior and Senior High School in Tokyo on March 9
the securities firm and the schools will jointly hold classes from April to give students basic knowledge about the stock market
as well as information about how to go about selecting and buying company shares
according to an official from the brokerage
"We would like to enhance the financial literacy of students
and help shift their minds from saving to making investments when they become adults," said Aoi Moriyama
a senior manager in charge of the program at the brokerage
Japanese households tend to hold much more of their financial wealth in cash savings than people in other countries
cash and deposits accounted for 54.3 percent of financial assets held by Japanese people in March 2022
against 13.7 percent in the United States and 34.5 percent in Europe
The government created the Nippon Individual Saving Account
in 2014 to encourage people to invest in mutual funds
stocks and exchange traded funds to bolster their retirement savings by offering a capital gains tax waiver on income
Reforms to the system will take effect in 2024
allowing individuals to invest up to 3.6 million yen yearly
with the total investment capped at 18 million yen
In addition to the government's drive to promote investing
demand for financial education has been growing as parents worry about how to educate their children about the cashless economy
Although the schools had some ties with the company previously
Moriyama said that the agreement will enable the schools to engage directly
and even consult it when teachers need specific financial knowledge for their classes
Employees of the securities house and teachers will hold the classes
students will come up with a newspaper advertisement that tries to communicate the societal benefits of increased private investment
"I believe the program will offer students pragmatic knowledge about finance and help build their assets in the future," said Toshimagaoka Joshigakuen's School Curriculum Supervisor Masataka Tsuzuura

which belongs to the same family as the White-cheeked Starling
It makes use of various voices and employs a call that sounds like "jyaaat" as a warning
Although wild birds usually flock together in the fall
White-cheeked Starlings will gather in the summer
choosing to congregate in commercial areas
Due to the excrement they leave behind and the loud noise they generate
they are usually viewed by many people as a nuisance
where there are no White-cheeked Starlings
the similarly sized Brown-eared Bulbul provides a benchmark for judging size
the Brown-eared Bulbul has drab feathers and a longer tail than the sparrow
Its call sounds like "hee-yo" and the bird rarely spends time on the ground

Rescuers also are searching for a person who lived beside a swollen river and was missing in the central prefecture of Shizuoka
residents were cleaning up in flood-hit parts of Iwata city in Shizuoka
where a river bank was breached and dozens of homes were flooded
shoveled out mud that gushed into their houses
washed the floors and brought out mud-smeared furniture
Heavy rain also caused widespread damage in the Tokyo region
In Toride city in ,Ibaraki prefecture northeast of Tokyo
and 85 residents were safely evacuated by boats
The heavy rains that fell on Japan's main islands late last week were intensified by Tropical Storm Mawar
which was a super typhoon when it hit Guam in May

more than 40 people were injured in the rain
Ten of those injured were on the southern island of Okinawa earlier in the storm
InvestingPlatinum Equity in Talks to Buy Packaging Maker TriviumBy Aaron Kirchfeld, Dinesh Nair, and Kiel PorterPublished: September 19, 2024 at 3:40PM EDT
(Bloomberg) -- Platinum Equity is in talks to buy Trivium Packaging NV for more than $3.5 billion, people with knowledge of the matter said.
The Los Angeles-based buyout firm, which has outlasted other suitors, is trying to finalize a deal with owners Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board and Ardagh Group SA in the coming weeks, according to the people, who asked not to be identified discussing confidential negotiations.
Rival bidder Sonoco Products Co. dropped from the Trivium auction after it agreed to buy European food can manufacturer Eviosys for about $3.9 billion in June, the people said. Other private equity firms had also shown interest, they said.
Deliberations are ongoing and there’s no certainty that an agreement will be reached. Ardagh and OTPP explored a sale of Trivium in 2021, only to abandon the effort, the people said at the time. They revived the plans to sell the business earlier this year, Bloomberg News reported in January.
Representatives for Ardagh, OTPP, Platinum and Sonoco declined to comment.
Trivium produces metal packaging products for sectors including food, beauty and home care covering products from tuna cans and hairspray bottles to paint and disinfectant spray.
The Netherlands-based company generates annual revenue of about $3.1 billion and has nearly 7,500 employees at 60 locations around the globe, according to its website. The company was formed in 2019 through the merger of OTPP-backed Exal Corp. and Ardagh’s food and specialty packaging business.

Two Sri Lankans in Japan were recently arrested over an illegal abortion
and an expert has pointed out that international students’ unstable resident status may be a factor behind the incident
Ibaraki Prefectural Police on May 23 announced the arrests of a Sri Lankan student residing in Toride
for allegedly aborting her baby when she was about nine months pregnant
and her boyfriend a Sri Lankan national in the neighboring prefecture of Tochigi
the woman used a drug to abort her baby on April 29
They had visited an obstetrician in Tochigi Prefecture in late March to ask for an abortion
but the doctor refused as the woman was beyond the period allowed for an abortion under Japan’s Maternal Health Act
some students who became pregnant and gave birth returned to their home countries
while others left their babies with family members in their home countries and continued their studies
president of the Ibaraki NPO Center Commons
which supports the employment and schooling of foreign residents in Ibaraki Prefecture
pointed out that the unstable position of international students
whose resident status depends on their schooling
may have contributed to the latest incident
There have been incidents in which foreign technical intern trainees were arrested on suspicion of corpse abandonment after giving birth at home
Yokota explained that if a foreign student is absent from school or their grades deteriorate due to childbirth or child care
“their status of residence may not be renewed on the grounds that they have not fulfilled the purpose of studying abroad.” He added that since the immigration system does not foresee foreign students giving birth
it is difficult for them to access medical care for fear of being sent back to their home countries
“It is important for the government to make the system known earlier and for schools and other institutions to establish a system to support international students when they’re in trouble.” (Mainichi Japan)

“The suspect got onto the buses and wielded a knife and slashed passengers,” said a local police spokesman after the bloody attack with what media reports said was a 25-centimetre kitchen knife
“I wanted to end my life,” he was later quoted as saying by broadcaster NHK
The knife attack in a country where violent crime is rare evoked memories of a far bloodier stabbing spree in 2008 when a man killed seven people in Tokyo
running over three with a truck and stabbing four to death
Yesterday morning’s attacks left 14 people wounded
Among the victims were eight high school students
four junior high school students and two women aged 49 and 59
The man slashed at least five of his victims
while the rest were hurt when he punched them or as they stampeded to flee the attack
A man with a knife is getting in.’ I was scared
High school students were running out and I saw a schoolboy bleeding from his forehead.”
The driver of the first bus that was attacked told NHK: “There were some 50 passengers on the bus when the man entered
But then I heard a scream and I thought this isn’t normal
and I quickly opened the door to let the students flee
The attacks stunned the local community in Ibaraki prefecture
“It’s an unforgivable act,” said Kenji Takezawa
some of whose students were among the victims
