We're thrilled to reconnect with an esteemed member of our alumni family
from JST in 2003 and was elected to be the class speaker for commencement
he led a Catholic Worker House in San Jose for several years after teaching at Bellarmine High School in San Jose
Fumii has been managing a Catholic Worker House called the Dandelion House in Portland
Fumi says he experienced a community of "loving
and curious people who are all trying to live into what it means to profess a faith that makes a difference for justice in the world." This formative experience has deeply influenced Fumi's journey
leading him from teaching high school social justice to active participation in the Catholic Worker Movement
Fumi talks about JST as a place where he learned to think theologically
JST exposed him to different ways of understanding what it meant to be human and relate to the Divine
he still clings to the Gospels as the story he wants to live into
and the renewing power of the Spirit of God
At the heart of his engagement in the world is his commitment to the idea of personalism
"The Catholic Worker emphasizes "personalism" - the idea that we have a personal responsibility to practice the Works of Mercy and care for those in need around us
We can't outsource compassion to social service agencies
or the government - we have to be compassionate people in our daily actions
whether they are obviously suffering (like our unhoused neighbors) or not - is to be seen
and known as individuals by other individuals."
"Personal stories are a vehicle for people to connect with one another
in order to build resilient communities at the local level." Thank you
for sharing a small part of your story with us

──Please tell us the reason for your loan transfer to Tokyo.I received an offer from Tokyo a little before the final match of last season's league
it was just at the timing when Diego OLIVEIRA was retiring
and I was very happy to receive an offer as a player to replace a great striker
"We would like a response soon," and my desire to perform in Tokyo for the new season grew stronger
──I believe that there are great expectations not only from the stakeholders but also from the fans and supporters for Diego TABA to become a scoring source in place of the mentioned player.Of course
and I want to do my best to play in a way that meets everyone's hopes
during the match at Ajinomoto Stadium (October 5
I was approached and had various conversations
-- Have you talked since the joining was decided?I haven't been able to talk yet
but I would like to ask various things through messages and so on
and I think it's important to know a lot in order to fit in with the team
so I would be happy to receive various advice
What kind of image do you have of them?I have the impression that it was a very difficult team
so you can decide without any worries." I know Seiji KIMURA and Tsubasa TERAYAMA well since we were together in Tosu
and this season we can become teammates in Tokyo
──I played at Ajinomoto Stadium for the first time at the end of last season
How was the atmosphere? It's a wonderful stadium
The energy created by the fans and supporters felt very challenging for the away players
I scored a career-high 14 goals in the league
Do you think there was a turning point for your growth?I have always believed in my own strength and fought
it was significant that Tosu believed in me
──After coming to Japan in the summer of 2022
achieving a record of 5 goals in about one and a half seasons
Do you feel any personal growth in certain areas?Honestly
I didn't have many opportunities during my time at Yokohama FC
but being trusted at Tosu became a great motivation for me
I believe that the people around me helped bring out my strengths
I definitely think my daughter's influence was significant (laughs)
──Please tell us about the characteristics of your play. This is a style that excels at creating one-on-one situations with the goalkeeper by breaking through the final line
I believe that utilizing my speed to break into space and connect to the finish is my greatest weapon
── RIAN's powerful breakthrough was very impressive when he scored a goal against Tokyo in the 3rd Round of the J.League YBC Levain Cup last season in May
not only his speed and power but also his shooting skill stands out.I am confident in my finishing
The way I receive the pass can change the shape of the shot
what kind of play do you expect to show and what kind of performance do you hope for?I want to quickly blend into the team and have them understand my playing style
and I also want to understand everyone's playing style
I believe I can score a lot of goals and achieve good results
I expect the 2025 season to be a wonderful year
Diego TABA and Masato MORISHIGE mentioned that the player who left the biggest impression on them from last season's matches was Hian. That's great to hear
and I believe he excels at stopping forwards
──Please tell us your goals for this season.I want to contribute to the team in any way I can
but I want to win a title in Tokyo and become a player who is remembered in history
what kind of character are you when you leave the pitch?I think I am the type to show fighting spirit on the pitch
I have a cheerful personality and sometimes joke around with Japanese players
──Are you saying that you are the mood maker?I usually joke around and I think I have a generally bright personality
I don't mind being asked for various things
and I also intend to demand things from my teammates in order to win the game
──Have you gotten used to life in Japan? No problem
I would like to play in Japan for many more years to come
please give a message to the fans and supporters.Wearing the Tokyo uniform
I will fight to represent everyone without shame
always being conscious of contributing to the team
I believe that we can achieve good results
so I hope you will trust and support the players
Please feel free to call me "Hian."
──Do you like the color blue and red?Until now
so I believe the Tokyo uniform will really suit me

Rikizo MATSUHASHI New Manager Interview"Rikizo's Philosophy"
Ohio State freshman Nick Feldman ended his high school career as the #1 ranked recruit in the class of 2022
The Malvern Prep heavyweight just notched the type of victory Buckeye fans have been waiting for
With Three matches to go in Ohio State's dual against rival Michigan
That meant they'd need three victories and bonus points along the way
Ohio State true freshman 184-pounder Ryder Rogotzke teched #14 Jaden Bullock
and Freshman Luke Geog beat Wolverine Rylan Rogers to put the Buckeyes within two points and give Feldman the opportunity to win the dual for his squad down 19-17
Freshman Nick Feldman toed the line against #4 Lucas Davison
a two-time All-American transfer from Northwestern who's one of the most proven heavyweights in the country
The first period at heavyweight was scoreless despite multiple scrambles that could have resulted in points for either Feldman or Davison
Feldman chose bottom but was ridden out by the savvy veteran
His only solace was a point on two stall calls
Davison escaped quickly which tied the score but essentially gave him a lead due to his riding time advantage
Feldman flipped the script with a quick takedown
Feldman held position for the rest of the match and held on to a one-point decision to earn the top individual victory of his career and complete the Buckeyes' improbable 20-19 come-from-behind victory over the Michigan Wolverines
NICK FELDMAN PULLS OFF THE UPSET FOR @wrestlingbucks! 🚨No. 16 at 285 defeats No. 4 Lucas Davison via a 4-3 decision to help Ohio State win the dual late! pic.twitter.com/vGxUmdlYe2

<Previous Match: Yokohama F.Marinos Review>
Tokyo fell behind in the 4th minute of the first half
but gradually took control and launched a counterattack
with Teppei OKA scoring the equalizer in the 19th minute of the first half
Kota TAWARATSUMIDA succeeded in turning the game around with a superb goal after a high-speed dribble from midfield
And just as the signs of victory became more pronounced towards the end
the player wearing number 39 powerfully and elegantly slotted in a decisive goal
Hotaka NAKAMURA intercepted on the right side and supplied the ball forward
while carefully checking the position of the opposing goalkeeper
"It is more likely to score by opening my body and using my left foot rather than matching it with my right foot," and skillfully changed the direction of my body to create a shooting lane
flowing the ball into the opposite side with a one-touch from my left foot in a technical strike
The man who has been running tirelessly since the first half widened the lead to two points with a magnificent dance in front of the many fans and supporters who packed the away section
A circle of joy formed as teammates rushed in from the bench
and Oka to the loud chant of Nakagawa from the stands behind the goal
they fully embraced the cheers directed at them
This victory is the first for Tokyo against Yokohama F.Marinos since the 2020 season
The team has achieved its second three-game winning streak of the season
Tokyo achieved a great victory against Nagoya Grampus at the Japan National Stadium with a score of 4-1
This marked their first win in seven matches
They then won away games against Urawa Reds and Yokohama F.Marinos with scores of 2-0 and 3-1
achieving their second three consecutive wins of the season
who led the attack with two goals in these three matches
"The results we achieve in the remaining six matches and what we can show to our fans and supporters will affect next season
There is also a chance to participate in the AFC Champions League elite
This match returns to our home Ajinomoto Stadium
Although they are currently at the bottom of the standings
a team aiming for survival is not an easy opponent
The players are each determined to "stay focused and fight," preparing for a decisive victory
the key player in the three consecutive victories
expressed his desire to "enjoy" this match
The winning streak started from the Nagoya match
and he has been improving his form in sync with the team
it will be his first game at Ajinomoto Stadium since the Sec
It was frustrating to watch from the outside when the team was struggling
It is important to play with all our might and enjoy ourselves at our home." The revival of the number 10 will strongly lead the final push in Tokyo
This week's matchday program is here
we were able to return to Ajinomoto Stadium with three consecutive wins.I am very happy
but it is necessary to thoroughly reflect on the performance so far
Analyzing game performance and continuing to build on the good aspects is important
we will prepare better for the match against Sagan Tosu
Q: Please reflect on the match against Yokohama F.Marinos in the last round.Everyone
fought strongly and contributed to the victory
the team demonstrated our principles and maximized our performance
the opening goal is extremely important for controlling the match
and there are areas we need to improve ahead of the match against Tosu
I want to ensure we take control of the game by effectively managing the various situations that may arise during the match
Q: What kind of challenge is necessary for a four-game winning streak?A
we have not been able to extend our winning streak
there have been various events as the season has progressed
the most important thing right now is right in front of us
We feel that we have prepared well up to this point
we want to fight passionately to deliver victory to our fans and supporters
I made a significant contribution to the victory in the starting lineup against Urawa Reds and Yokohama F.Marinos
Please tell us about your feelings again.I am very happy to have contributed to the consecutive wins
I feel that the team's performance is good on the pitch
I believe that the condition of each player will naturally improve
and I want to approach this week's match against Sagan Tosu with a good atmosphere
Q: What factors contributed to the improvement in performance after being away from victory for a while?I believe that we were able to “let go” in a good way from the second half of the match against Sanfrecce Hiroshima in Sec
While there were certainly tactical elements that contributed to our three consecutive wins
I think the most important factor was the mental aspect
Winning against Nagoya Grampus seems to have lifted the burdens that each player was carrying
Q: While there is a tendency to focus on scoring and consecutive wins
how do you feel about the defensive aspect?Since the start of the season
we have been placing great importance on high-position defense and quick transitions from defense to attack
but we were not able to express that well in the summer matches
I was particularly conscious of this as I entered the pitch
and I feel that our high-position defense is leading to good attacks
Please tell us about your impression of the opponent.I believe that both teams have changed since our last match
and I want to express our evolved form on the pitch
but I think we can get closer to a fourth consecutive win by continuing to showcase the good aspects we demonstrated in our recent matches
Q: This week's match against Sagan Tosu is a game that could lead to our fourth consecutive win.A
I want to forget about the victories we've had so far and focus on the upcoming match
Rather than thinking about a four-game winning streak
my desire to "win" the match in front of us
and I want to fight without letting my guard down
one of the factors for the three consecutive wins is the improvement in defense.I am always thinking about how to apply pressure from the front
I am conscious of how to move my teammates and how to go for the ball myself
I also make sure to communicate constantly with the players at the back to seek better defense
the comeback goal against Yokohama F.Marinos was exactly in that form.I feel that our defense is functioning well and that it is leading us in a positive direction
it might be best to have more possession of the ball
the current team has a good momentum to recover
I want to maintain this positive atmosphere and win again next time
NUMBER 10 - Keigo HIGASHI's Pride of the Number 10
Tokyo celebrated their first victory in six matches against Nagoya Grampus in Sec
and continued their winning streak in away games against Urawa Reds and Yokohama F
we have accumulated three points at Saitama Stadium 2002 and Nissan Stadium
This season marks the second three consecutive wins
aiming for the first four consecutive wins of the season against Sagan Tosu
There were no major changes to the starting lineup
and Soma ANZAI started on the pitch for the first time in seven matches
where they have been away for about three and a half months
1st HALF - Gaining rhythm from the middle of the first half and launching a counterattack
Despite being on a three-game winning streak
after being pushed back while the ball was moved on the right side
a surprising direct cross was delivered to Fukuda
and Marcelo RYAN reacted to it with a headed shot
Although this was ruled offside with the support of VAR
they faced another crisis from a corner kick
but here the goalkeeper Taishi Brandon NOZAWA made a good save
He quickly blocked a shot from close range by Vykintas Slivka
the pressure on Tosu's passing work was not fully effective
and there were noticeable moments where they struggled against the power of Marcelo RYAN up front
held firm at the critical moment and did not allow a goal
Kota TAWARATSUMIDA received the ball in his own half and dribbled solo for about 60 meters
Ryotaro ARAKI's feed was reacted to by Anzai
who found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper
but he couldn't connect with the shot as he wanted
and they went into halftime without scoring
2nd HALF - Equalized with a goal from Yang in the final stages
there was no significant change in the game's structure
but Tokyo's back line responded tenaciously
who had shown sharp moves since the first half
a low and fast cross from player Togashi was cleared by Masato MORISHIGE
Although player MORISHIGE blocked this as well
the loose ball rolled in front of player VIKINTAS SLIVKA
the current team does not look down and aims to attack the goal for an equalizer
and Tsuyoshi OGASHIWA actively play to bring in the ball
a close chance was created from the connection between HARAKAWA and OGASHIWA
Mori-shige aimed for the goal with a direct volley
a tying goal was scored in the 37th minute of the second half
Takahiro KO powerfully struck the ball into the net
resulting in no final goal and missing out on their first four consecutive wins of the season
the next match will be an away game against Vissel Kobe

Q: please review the game.It was an entertaining football match where both teams fought to achieve results
and I expected them to come at us in this way
Until about the 20th minute of the first half
and we had to ensure we didn't get separated from the game
we started to find our good rhythm and flow towards the end of the first half
specifically by increasing our awareness of moving forward and making more forward runs
we were able to control the game better and grasp the flow of the match
It was important for us to connect our performances while building on what we had been doing
we responded well with our attitude and belief
We continued to fight and managed to equalize at 1-1
I believe we were able to fight strongly towards the end
and the players who came on as substitutes made a very good impact
We ran out of time to score the winning goal
and I feel regretful that we couldn't bring home three points for our fans and supporters
there is an 11-point difference from 3rd place
How will you maintain the team's motivation as the season comes to a close?A,The motivation is to steadily improve every week
And to fight to finish the season stronger than any other team
The important thing is not to look too far ahead
but to value each match and fight hard in every game
There were good aspects in today's match as well
there were also areas where we need to fight more sharply
I want to ensure that we can recover well first
I believe that not being able to win a match that we absolutely had to win reflects our current abilities
but there were few moments throughout the match where we could take control
Q: This was your second goal of the season
Please review the scoring scene.I was aiming for the loose ball after the contest
I had a good feeling during shooting practice
Coach Yu TOKISAKI has been providing many variations for set plays
There was also a discussion that scoring from set plays is important to break into the top ranks
so I think it was good that we were able to score
What preparations will be made during this suspension period?I think it is difficult to maintain a dominant game like we had in the last 10 minutes of the second half for the full 90 minutes
but I want to work towards increasing that time as much as possible
and aiming to win all the remaining matches
Q: It's been a while since you started in the lineup
it was my first start in a while as the team is on a three-game winning streak
Everyone understood that it wouldn't be an easy game
and there were several dangerous moments from the first half
I feel responsible for the many stagnant periods and for not being able to effectively utilize the momentum from the three consecutive wins
especially as a member returning to play after a long time
What I regret the most is that we couldn't win
the movement of running from the side to the center and actively targeting the opponent's back was particularly noticeable. If we don't keep moving actively with running
the opponent will defend with five players
causing their defenders to shift sideways and no space will be created
I aimed for movements running from the outside to the inside
as well as vertical spaces along the sidelines and behind
and I was conscious of allowing my teammates to use the space created by my runs
Q: There were scenes where the attack got stuck against Sagan Tosu
I have the impression that many opponents have been pressing from the front in the last few matches
but Sagan Tosu was positioned with a five-man defense
In a situation where we were pushing forward
figuring out how to deliver crosses effectively is a challenge for the next match
and I think we had fewer opportunities to take action
which made it easier for them to defend against our attacks

Sagan Tosu manager Kim Myung Hwi has tested positive for coronavirus
the J-League first division side said Tuesday
Three club officials were found to have been in close-proximity contact with Kim
but his symptoms did not include a fever and he took part in an away match against Kashima Antlers that evening
On Sunday evening he developed a fever of 38 degrees Celsius and underwent a polymerase chain reaction test at a hospital in Saga Prefecture the following day
The club had all players and staff tested for coronavirus on Tuesday
They expect to get the results before the Levain Cup match against Sanfrecce Hiroshima

The seemingly invincible poisonous nuts have stumbled of late
But they’re still a dangerous delicacy come tomorrow night
The Ohio State Buckeyes started off the season on a roll with big wins over the Villanova Wildcats and Kentucky Wildcats (that North Carolina Tar Heels win isn’t looking so good these days)
they suffered their first loss of the season back in December at Minnesota
and have now dropped four straight games including three in conference play
despite being ranked last week in the AP at #11
find themselves tied for last place in the Big Ten with Northwestern
To break down this cryptic team and give you all some better insight into THE [Not actually trademarked] Ohio State, we had a virtual sit-down with Connor Lemons over at Land-Grant Holy Land as he graciously answered a few questions for us
Kevin (AKA SpartyOnHuskers): Could you describe the best thing you like about The Schottenstein Center/Value City Arena in one sentence
And would you prefer to still be playing in St
Connor: The best part about the Schottenstein Center is definitely the placement of the student section
Ohio State has their student section stretch the length of the floor behind the benches and scorers’ table
Sitting right behind the opposing team’s bench
literally within arm’s length of the other team was always really fun when I was a student
I’ve had some really interesting interactions with players and coaches
and I even have some favorite non-OSU coaches now because of it (Tim Miles was one of my favorites
The part that sucks about the Schott is that it’s a multi-use arena used for hockey
especially during games that are lopsided one way or the other where people just aren’t motivated to get loud
Ohio State probably has one of the least impactful “home court advantages” in the conference
John Arena is more of the old “field house” setup
It gets really hot and really loud in there
and all around is a better basketball venue I think
Kevin: OSU has dropped four straight games now
Is panic starting to set in a bit among the fan base and team
or are cool heads looking at who the losses were to and remembering those big wins over Kentucky and Villanova not so long ago
What has been happening exactly that has seen these losses happen after the seemingly invincibility of the Buckeyes prior
Connor: I think a reasonable amount of concern is starting to set in on the fanbase
but just from talking to people around the city and University
a lot of people are starting to scratch their heads a bit
The Buckeyes are definitely one of the three or four most talented teams in the B1G
and we’ve seen what they can do against elite opponents like Villanova and Kentucky
The potential to be a top-tier team is obviously there
but they’ve really ran into a perfect storm of issues all at once
They’ve got some injury issues with Kyle Young having his appendix out
and Musa Jallow probably redshirting after ankle surgery in October
They’ve also turned the ball over at an alarming rate lately
and their three-point shooting percentage has plummeted after being great early in the season
All that together is creating problems for the Buckeyes
but I think they’ll get it together soon and end with at least a respectable conference record
Kevin: I’m going to sneak a football question in here because this is a Nebraska site
Do you feel confident you can define a completed forward pass
or is the incompetence of NCAA officiating have you questioning your sanity like all the years the NFL refs made me question mine as a Lions fan watching Calvin Johnson play
Connor: I’m originally from Toledo [Editor’s Note: This is in fact part of Michigan as I do not personally recognize the bogus state border line rigged by crooked Andrew Jackson back in the day]
so I grew up surrounded by a lot of Lions fans and all I can say is..
Detroit sports are in a rough spot right now
I actually thought it was going to be called back when the play happened live
but during the replay it definitely looked like a catch and fumble
Kevin: This one is also a just for fun question you can ignore if you want/or if I’m off base assuming you are at least a casual Cavaliers fan
Do you enjoy the tin foil hat conspiracies of that school up north about how an Ohio sports franchise owned by a Michigan State alum hired away their head basketball coach
Connor: I’m actually not an NBA fan at all
I watch a lot of college hoops but am not a huge fan of the NBA
and I loved watching Michigan when he was there
but I’m not really sure how great his coaching style is going to translate to the NBA
and DJ Carton are obviously hot on his heels in scoring
Who is the unheralded player on the roster that you think we should be aware of after those three players that is a valuable asset on the court but who might not show it in strictly the stats sheet
and actually wasn’t offered a scholarship to Ohio State until after Kaleb was offered
He really struggled his first couple years in Columbus
but he has steadily gotten better the last few years and has become a very valuable part of this team
especially being the only scholarship senior on the team
He leads Ohio State in 3-point shooting at 44%
and just always seems to be on the ground diving for a loose ball
falling into the stands trying to save one
He lost a few teeth last year in a collision in a game and he fractured his eye socket this year in a game
Most teams won’t circle him as a guy to watch for
but you really can’t ignore him or he’ll make you pay
Kevin: As I pull these numbers up Sunday night to write the questions
Ohio State still finds itself sitting at number eight in KenPom despite their recent struggles
what kind of miracle do we Nebraska fans need to have happen with our small line-up of guys in order for us to get a win
Connor: The way Ohio State has been playing lately
you probably have a better chance than you think
I think the Buckeyes have the upper hand here simply because Nebraska rolls out quite a few guards and is lacking a little bit in their frontcourt
My guess is that Chris Holtmann will want to get the ball to Kaleb Wesson and Kyle Young early and expose that if he can
The one thing that Ohio State always has trouble with are tall
athletic guards who can create scoring opportunities for themselves
This year it was Marcus Carr for Minnesota
A couple years back it was Tony Carr from Penn State (no relation)
The Buckeyes just tend to struggle guarding those tall guards who can make things happen by themselves
Nebraska has that type of guy this year in Haanif Cheatham
Kevin: Thanks again for taking the time to answer our questions
And regardless of the outcome Tuesday night
you have my heartfelt wishes of nothing but luck come February 4th on your schedule
Thanks again to Connor for answering our questions. Be sure to check out Land-Grant Holy Land before tip-off tomorrow night to read some of their basketball coverage
The career of Fernando Torres has come full circle
The Spanish striker fell in love with football from reading the legendary Japanese comic "Captain Tsubasa." "I remember when I was a kid
we couldn't find the signal really well on TV
but everyone in school was talking about this cartoon about football
"I started playing football because of this ..
that was the first contact I had with Japan."
The last chapter of a football career that has seen spells with Atletico Madrid
is likely to be in Japan as the 34-year-old gets ready to make his debut for Sagan Tosu on Sunday
It is becoming an increasingly familiar sight for Japanese fans
no less -- pictured holding the scarf of a J.League club aloft
It follows the arrival of Andres Iniesta and Lukas Podolski at Vissel Kobe
The European trio have signed for clubs that are not traditional members of the Japanese elite
Marinos but rather Vissel Kobe and Sagan Tosu
teams that have never come close to winning a league title
Although Kobe may be --or may have been -- a footballing backwater
it is also a city of over a million and located in the densely populated Kansai region
just a short train ride from the bright lights of Osaka and the historic sights of Kyoto
the westernmost of the four main Japanese islands
far from Tokyo or Osaka and close to the southern tip of the Korean peninsula
And it is Korea that has played a major part in the club's recent history
Until 2011 Sagan had spent their entire history in the second tier
Then former South Korean international Yoon Jung-hwan took over as coach and finally delivered promotion and then a top-5 finish
but the club still retains Korean imports and a trace of the relatively direct style that Yoon introduced
Fernando Torres is set to make his debut for Sagan Tosu of the J.League on Saturday. Getty ImagesNow
I want to help raise the level of football in Japan
My goal is to make Sagan Tosu a major club," he said
And there will be plenty of attention on a cup match in August as Torres meets Iniesta
"Andres is a great friend who I first played with when we were both 15," said Torres
"We have the same motivations and we both love Japan
Until recently Sagan Tosu versus Vissel Kobe would not have made that many headlines in Japan
Iniesta and Podolski will be a different matter
Money has obviously played a major part in bringing these stars east and there is more money in Japanese football these days
Kobe's case is a little different as the club has been owned since December 2014 by e-commerce giant Rakuten
The company sees football as a way to increase its brand at home but especially overseas
it wants to build Vissel into a national and then Asian powerhouse
A deal signed in 2016 saw the J.League sell domestic online streaming rights for a total of around $2 billion over a 10-year period
and while there has yet to be the kind of widepsread spending seen in China in recent years -- a spree that has seen the Chinese Super League overtake the J.League in terms of average attendance and international profile -- there is a determination to make Japan's league the undisputed No
Torres has a more immediate priority: to take the points against Vegalta Sendai on Sunday and help relieve relegation worries
He does not want to suffer the same fate as Diego Forlan
the last big-name player to head east in 2014 before the current spate of spending started last year
The Uruguayan ended up playing in the second division with Cerezo Osaka
he was supposed to be the missing piece in the jigsaw to deliver a first league title to the Kansai club
At least Torres knows what he is getting into
As the league approaches the halfway stage
Tosu are next to bottom with 14 points and three off safety
but with less than a goal a game to the team's name
there is serious scope for the Spaniard to make a difference
but more important than scoring goals is winning games."
If Torres can help the club avoid relegation
then minds can turn once again to putting Sagan Tosu on the map

It's the Dual of the Century (of the week) and tickets prices to see #2 Ohio State take on #1 Penn State at Rec Hall in University Park
this Saturday are going for prices not seen for a wrestling match in recent memory.
The match is long since sold out, and what few tickets that are for sale on the secondary market are going for $200 or more. To see just how precious one of the nearly 7,000 seats in the arena is, we turn to our friends at VividSeats for a full breakdown.
Not everyone is thrilled about the sold-out event's high ticket prices. Ohio State head coach Tom Ryan has been vocal about his desire to have the dual at the more spacious Bryce Jordan Center
which has a capacity of over 15,000.
There were mentions of the logistical problems trying to switch arenas presented
especially after the schedules were set long ago
Penn State head coach Cael Sanderson is under no obligation to change venues
One main argument against a change is that a big part of the Nittany Lions wrestling team's season ticket sales pitch was an opportunity to guarantee a seat for this dual in the intimate and fan-friendly Rec Hall.
A larger supply of tickets would mean a lower price on the secondary market
and that would allow more opportunities for attendees
both visitors from Ohio and locals who perhaps don't have the discretionary funds for a $100 ticket
if Rec Hall was the plan from that beginning
there is nothing requiring Penn State deviate from it
I think we can all agree that it's pretty cool seeing tickets to a wrestling match in such high demand
The Spanish striker said he was looking for "a new challenge" after leaving Atletico Madrid but he is finding the J-League far tougher than expected
Fernando Torres was expected to score freely for Japanese club Sagan Tosu
But rather than ignite the struggling club when he arrived in July 2018
the Spaniard has only added to their woes in the final third
Torres has failed to find the back of the net all season
drawing a blank in all 12 of his appearances to date
with his last goal coming in November last year
Sagan sit second last in the J-League and have scored the fewest goals
After narrowly avoiding relegation last year
the club brought in Spanish manager Lluis Carreras with an eye on getting more out of Torres
had found himself out of the job late last year
with his reluctance to use the former Atletico Madrid striker just one of many reported reasons behind the club's decision to show the Italian the door
Torres hasn't found his shooting boots under Carreras
and has quickly gone from club captain to bench-warmer
Having started the season with the armband
the 35-year-old picked up a minor injury in March and has struggled to get a foothold in Sagan's side since
With Carreras preferring to play more versatile
Torres has found himself stuck on the sidelines as his Japanese adventure enters a limbo of sorts
There was speculation last month that the Spaniard was on the cusp of signing for Mexican side Atletico de San Luis in the summer – a possibility that has since been ruled out
with his contract expiring early next year
Sagan could well be open to letting Torres depart early
with the striker himself no doubt desperate to play regularly as his career winds to a close
The former Chelsea forward is no stranger to the occasional dry spell and it's safe to say he has fallen well short of expectations set by himself when he signed on with Tosu
I want to help raise the level of football in Japan," Torres said at his unveiling
"My goal is to make Sagan Tosu a major club
The sensation that I can return the club to where they should be is another reason why – I see how much confidence they have in me
Germany and even one from Spain but at no point did I ever think about going to another European team
"I wanted a new challenge in a completely different place
Asia has always treated me very well."
made life on the pitch particularly easy for Torres to date
with the J-League's well-organised defences proving a hard nut for him to crack
David Villa has hit the ground running in the J-League
scoring six goals from his first 12 appearances for Vissel Kobe after arriving from MLS side New York City FC
The former Barcelona man is admittedly helped by the presence of Andres Iniesta and Lukas Podolski in his new side
with Torres the only high-profile name in Sagan's squad
While Tosu's fans have shown some patience with their star man
he must start proving his worth soon as the club once again braces itself for a relegation battle
is a long way from the heights of European success he enjoyed in both England and Spain
Though certainly a new experience for the striker
Torres simply must start scoring again soon to ensure his time in Japan doesn't end in disaster
Former Spain striker Fernando Torres has agreed to join J-League first-division side Sagan Tosu
who had stints in the English Premier League with Liverpool and Chelsea
currently 17th in the 18-team J-League standings
He will hold a press conference in Tokyo upon arriving in Japan on Sunday
(Torres shoots in Atletico Madrid's friendly match against Sagan Tosu in Japan on Aug
Sagan Tosu!," Torres said on his Twitter account
with a photo of him posing with Tosu President Minoru Takehara
was a member of Spain's first and only World Cup winning side in 2010
He scored five goals at the 2013 Confederations Cup and led the squad to a second-place finish
He is the latest big-name addition to the J-League following compatriot and Spain teammate Andres Iniesta
Torres made his professional debut with Atletico Madrid in Spain in 2001
He returned to his boyhood club in 2015 after playing for Milan
Spanish media reported earlier this year that Torres wanted to play in the J-League
The governing body announced in May that Torres had agreed to join Tosu
saying the report was "factually inaccurate."
TOKYO (AP) - Fernando Torres finally opened his J-League account with the third goal in Sagan Tosu's 3-0 home win over fellow strugglers Gamba Osaka on Sunday

Liverpool and Chelsea striker notched his first goal in Japan on Wednesday night
in a 3-0 Emperor's Cup win over Vissel Kobe
before scoring his first league goal in his seventh start in the league
adding the 86th-minute insurance goal after strikes from Yuji Ono and Mu Kanazaki had given Tosu a 2-0 lead

league leaders Sanfrecce Hiroshima took a 19th-minute lead over Cerezo Osaka
and held on to remain six points ahead of Kawasaki Frontale in second place

Japan (AP) — David Villa scored his first goal in Japan as Vissel Kobe beat Sagan Tosu 1-0 in the J-League on Saturday
Villa gave the hosts a 1-0 lead nine minutes after the break when he beat Sagan goalkeeper Takuo Okubo with a right-foot shot from 18 meters
The 36-year-old Villa has been reunited with former Barcelona teammate Andres Iniesta at Kobe

Sagan Tosu manager Kim Myung Hwi has been accused of continuing to subject players and others to violence
The anonymous accusation was made to the Japan Football Associations' consultation desk for stamping out violence
with the J-League set to discuss whether to launch its own investigation into the matter
The 40-year-old Kim was suspended from managing by his club in June for three matches after he swept a player's foot during practice and floored him
which was deemed to exceed the scope of his duties
Sagan set up a third-party panel to investigate the matter but decided no further punishment was necessary
allowing Kim to return to manage the team on Aug
The source said the accusation indicated that Kim's abuse of power had been taking place also before the incident that resulted in his suspension
adding the club's investigation was insufficient and that scrutiny from an objective standpoint is needed
A Sagan spokesperson said the club had not heard from the league and would respond after understanding the situation based on a confirmation of the facts
The My Home Hero anime had its premiere with two episodes out, and in a sea of isekai and romance titles this season, this crime thriller title definitely stands out. When the anime was first announced in June 2022
And despite a faulty first episode premiere
the story keeps getting darker and darker which in turn reels in more interest
The anime follows the ordinary life of a 47-year old man named Tetsuo Tosu
After figuring out that his daughter Reika is being abused physically by her boyfriend Nobuto Matori
He then hears a call of what Nobuto and the yakuza plan to do with Reika
he emerges from the cabinet and kills Nobuto by hitting him multiple times with a rice cooker
he resolves to hide the corpse and dispose it without anyone knowing to protect Reika
when his wife Kasen Tosu discovers the crime
she appears nonchalant and is willing to cooperate with Tetsuo’s plans to cover it up
It’s likely Reika’s wealthy grandparents whose money Nobuto was aiming for are from her side
so it will be interesting to see if they get involved and if they also have some shady side to them.As if the premise alone wasn’t dark enough
it terrified me how both Tetsuo and his wife were so chilled with the idea of disposing a body without a trace
on preparing a solution on how to shrink the body
to even using flesh-eating bacteria to eat out the corpse’s flesh: you would think this wasn’t the first time the couple did this
it’s explained with Tetsuo’s extreme love for mystery novels
Even with the phrase ‘keeping a safe family’ used as the reason to do such a deed
one could not help but think: “but why go there?” Either way
I think such vagueness still makes My Home Hero interesting to watch
as the family now finds themselves under the scrutiny of a powerful yakuza group
the My Home Hero premiere still managed to bring itself as one of the most interesting titles this season
the title is supplemented with an interesting storyline not common in anime

Liverpool and Chelsea star was on the wrong end of the lopsided scoreline as Sagan Tosu lost to Vissel Kobe in the J-League
Torres, who announced his intention to call time on his career in June, spoke before his final match, per TalkSport's Oliver Dawnay: "It's been an amazing 18 years
which is the most important thing for me."
.css-1xiyrl{display:-webkit-box;display:-webkit-flex;display:-ms-flexbox;display:flex;-webkit-box-pack:center;-ms-flex-pack:center;-webkit-justify-content:center;justify-content:center;aspect-ratio:unset;}The decorated duo play for Vissel
along with ex-Barcelona playmaker Sergi Samper and former Arsenal pair Lukas Podolski and Thomas Vermaelen
as well as the the FIFA World Cup in 2010 alongside Iniesta and Villa with La Roja
scoring the winner to beat Germany in the final in '08
Those international trophies were just part of a silverware-laden career for Torres:
The 35-year-old rose to prominence as a precocious talent for Atleti
but he was arguably at the peak of his powers once he joined Liverpool in 2007
scoring some spectacular goals and powering the Reds to the cusp of the Premier League title in 2009
It's not unfair to say some of the magic faded from Torres' game once he left Merseyside to join Chelsea in a deal worth £50 million in January 2011
A slew of injuries slowed the initial burst of pace that had once made the Spaniard so dangerous
Torres' time at Chelsea was his most fruitful in terms of European success at club level
He helped the Blues win the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 2011
scoring a memorable goal against Barcelona to seal passage to the final
Torres played alongside Frank Lampard
and he is still fondly remembered by the current Chelsea boss:
While his skills appeared to be deteriorating
Torres was able to score the goals to fire the Blues to the Europa League trophy a year later
A return to the Spanish capital in 2014 yielded another Europa League title when Atleti beat Marseille in 2018
Torres took the moment to move to Japan that same summer
While his career has come to a quiet and somewhat downbeat end
the striker will be remembered for the iconic goals that brought him major success at every level
Episode 2 of My Home Hero has been released
The new episode airs on April 9 at 23:30 (JST)

The former Liverpool and Atletico Madrid striker has confirmed that he will be on his way to the Far East
Fernando Torres has confirmed that he will sign for J-League club Sagan Tosu
The former Liverpool and Atletico Madrid striker left the Spanish club at the end of the 2017-18 season
following his emotional return to his boyhood team
Torres had been in negotiations with Sagan Tosu several weeks ago
a breakthrough in negotiations has seen the 34-year-old finally rubber-stamp his move to Japan
Sagan Tosu are currently 17th in the J-League
having won just three of their 15 games so far this season
Torres scored 10 goals in his final season at Atletico, including netting twice against Eibar in his final ever La Liga appearance
The Japanese side appear to have gazumped the likes of the Australian A-League, with Torres reportedly lowering his wage demands in order to secure a transfer.
Both Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC had been linked to a potential move
with the Sky Blues recently pocketing around $2 million in the transfers of both Bobo and Adrian Mierzejewski
Torres was also heavily linked with a move to the United States or China
But he has decided to follow his former Spain team-mate Andres Iniesta
to Japan after confirming he received a multitude of offers
"We have had proposals from all continents," Torres told the media on Tuesday
"My new team will be the Japanese side Sagan Tosu
"Sagan Tosu were one of the first clubs to be interested in me
"I think Japan and the Japanese League is going to be a great experience
they have made a great effort and they believe that I can be one of the solutions so that the team returns to the place where it has to be
but at no time did it go through my head to go to a European team
I wanted a new challenge in a totally different place."
One of the most decorated players in Europe
Torres won the Europa League in 2017-18 with Atletico
the Champions League and the Europa League with Chelsea
Torres was also in La Roja's squad as they won the European Championship in 2008 and 2012
and also featured in the 2010 World Cup-winning squad
Bayern Munich just know where the good players are at
Sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić might have another wonderkid en route to Bayern Munich and this time
18-year-old midfielder Taichi Fukui who plays for J-League side Sagan Tosu was given the opportunity to do a trial for the second team, according to Sky Deutschland
He has managed to impress the higher-ups at Bayern
He has been likened to former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa in his home country and will be playing in the Regionalliga with the second team
(Adam Aznou does not count since he is in the U-17s.)
negotiations are ongoing between Bayern and Sagan Tosu for a permanent deal and a transfer could happen in the next few days
coach Peter CKLAMOVSKI is also burning with the desire for victory in the upcoming matches
J.League YBC Levain Cup 1st Round 3rd Round
The tournament format has changed to a knockout system starting this season
and the 1st Round will determine the winner in one match
we want to win here and advance to the playoff round
which will be played in a home and away format
took the lead in the 13th minute with Tsuyoshi OGASHIWA's first blue and red goal
and added points with Riki HARAKAWA's right foot and Keita ENDO's accurate shot
who made his first appearance of the season
showed off his technical skills by participating in the build-up
Although there were some dangerous scenes from counters
the defense fought hard and did not concede any goals
Jája Silva tore through the center of the pitch with a powerful dribble and smashed a spectacular right footed shot
securing a 4-0 victory and advancing to the 3rd round
we have not won in 3 games and are far from victory
but it is a fact that we are able to make adjustments during the game and see how to break through the situation
Although we have been unable to win consecutive games during Golden Week and have had some games where we couldn't finish with a win
It is expected that player selection will be based on monitoring their recovery status during consecutive matches
Tokyo this season is able to combine their strengths
The performances of the players who have been given the opportunity to play are highly anticipated
suffered a shutout loss to Nagoya Grampus in the previous league match
but had a big win of 3-0 against Júbilo Iwata in Sec
13 and 5-2 against Kawasaki Frontale in Sec
Despite their low ranking of 17th in the league
caution is necessary as they have shown a high scoring ability in the past few matches
Tosu's coach Kenta Kujira has experience working as an assistant coach under Peter Cklamovski
It will be interesting to see the tactics of these two former colleagues who once shared a love for soccer
Away Tosu has a bad compatibility with 5 consecutive losses in official games since October 2019
they have broken through the traditional "devil's gate" of Fukuoka and Sapporo
so they want to break the past trend and get closer to winning the cup here as well
what do you think about the team composition?A
We will make a decision while watching how the recovery goes
we will confirm the members and then head to practice
the important thing is that it is a league cup match and it is an opportunity for us to get closer to the cup
so I will choose a team that can perform well and win
who worked together during his time at Montedio Yamagata.A
I want to make sure that we can give our maximum effort
but we will prepare well and fight on all fronts
we will have a league match against Tosu at the same venue
Do you take into consideration anything when playing against the same team in a short period of time?A
The current situation is the team's current situation
I don't think anything will change just because there is a game
Our mentality is to continue playing our football and grow while improving
We will fight to overcome the game against Tosu and move on to the next one
we will prepare for the league game against Gamba Osaka
and then for the league game against Tosu..
It is important to prepare for each game in this way
there have been no victories in the last 3 games
but how do you feel about the team's performance?A
I believe that the content is the most important
Some may say "we haven't won in 3 games"
we had to fight with one less player for a long time
What I need to do is focus on what we need to continue improving and extending
We are concentrating on what steps we need to take to reach our destination
I believe we have shown that we are heading in the right direction and towards success
there are still areas that we need to improve on
I believe there were signs of us moving in the right direction and growing
Yokohama F.Marinos match was a game where Tokyo showed a clear attitude of continuously aiming for the next point.A
and it was also a chance for us to show how much we can do against such opponents
there were also parts where we had to fight through difficulties
we were able to play unstoppable football against the opponent
we were able to create opportunities to win
This was because both teams played aggressively
It was very disappointing that we didn't get the result we wanted
but we were able to create scenes that deserved a victory
we want to further pursue what is important for us to become the team we dream of
It was a game where we showed what we can do
and there are still areas that need improvement
We want to gain as much as we can and move forward
and we are looking forward to the next game
I scored my first goal since joining in the previous Levain Cup match. In the previous Y.S.C.C
I was able to score my first goal in Tokyo
so my motivation is very high as we approach the Levain Cup
Since the matches are played in a tournament format
I definitely want to win and advance to the next stage
and I want to contribute to the team with plays that lead to goals
I think that depending on the position you play
you are often required to have a high defensive intensity. In modern football
even forwards are required to have strong defensive abilities and tactical understanding
is looking for this and I want to contribute not only in attack but also in the defensive aspect that the team needs to express on the pitch
We play in various positions such as center and side depending on the game
but how do you want to activate the attack?A
I am most skilled at playing in the left wing position
I have no problem playing in the center or right positions
I believe that contributing to victory through scoring or assisting is the most important thing
What kind of performance do you want to show for the Sagan Tosu match?A
The Levain Cup is different from the league games as it is a tournament format
so I am most conscious of focusing on the result of winning rather than the content
Yuto NAGATOMO had a great performance in the Yokohama F.Marinos match
What kind of inspiration did you receive?A
Nagatomo's goal and performance have been a great inspiration for me as a player in the same position
and it has also sparked even more desire within myself
I feel like I have been able to maintain good form and by competing with Nagatomo
we are able to bring out the best performance on the pitch regardless of who is playing
5/19 Yokohama FM Match Review & Interview
5/22 Tosu Match Match Review & Interview
9 only had to put his head round the door for the floodgates to open and everyone to go wild," the Madrid-based daily remarked
an army of fans carrying "everything imaginable about 'El Nino'" to greet Atleti at Saga Airport
Torres is the family favourite—even though the new headline acts feature Jackson Martinez
there's no competition: Torres "mania" is just as evident at the Vicente Calderon
Atletico's prodigal son is the oldest
He's the one with the shortest remaining shelf life
depending on how you view Vietto's case as a work in progress
might be a struggle in 2015-16 in the eyes of some
Ten feels like the number for Torres in front of goal in 2015-16
that might sound unattainable; to others it might sound paltry
Yet there is reason to believe it's about right for the club icon
Last season, the 31-year-old tallied six strikes in all competitions after returning to the Spanish capital. Notably, three came against Real Madrid and Barcelona in the Copa del Rey in what you could have termed a honeymoon phase
but his time in league was considerably more barren: three goals in 19 appearances
many might conclude that Torres would be fortunate to get another 19—that his prominence is only set to decrease
But that ignores one major thing: the influence of Diego Simeone
was brought back to the banks of the Manzanares at Simeone's request
The Argentinian sought his former team-mate
believing he could rekindle something in Torres
Simeone displayed a commitment to that cause
using the striker to some extent in every game bar two after his return
the manager won't be willing to give up on that now; he understands the feel-good factor that surrounds Torres and the cocktail of emotions his goals can stir
that sort of player-fan connection that defines Simeone's Atleti
JAVIER SORIANO/Getty ImagesWhat's more, Torres will benefit from the shift in the style that will unfold at the Vicente Calderon in 2015-16
more dynamic method likely to increase the scoring chances available to Los Colchoneros' forwards
It's in that sense where the new incarnation of Atletico should differ most from those before it
Simeone's men have slowed as the campaigns have progressed
their attritional method sapping their energy and verve in the closing months
David Villa's scoring output was a victim of that
Naturally, the Spaniard isn't the barnstorming force he once was, but a reinvented Atletico Madrid in 2015-16 will better cater to the striker he is now, the player he's become.
So even in the presence of intense competition, expect Torres to play. Not all the time but regularly enough. And when he does, his chances of success should be considerably higher than last season. Ten goals for the campaign is realistic.

Tetsuo Tosu is troubled to learn the fact that Nobuto still has living relatives
His wife Kasen Tosu had successfully created a fake video showing Nobuto’s whereabouts

Torres is yet to score in seven league appearances for the club he joined after his Atletico Madrid contract ran out at the end of the 2017-18 season
But the former Spain international was on target as Sagan knocked Andres Iniesta's Vissel Kobe out of the Emperor's Cup with a 3-0 home win
Sagan were already in front when substitute Torres made sure of his side's progression by tucking in a sweet low finish after brilliant play on the wing from Akito Fukuta

"We have shared some of the best moments in our careers and today we return to see each other in Japan
This combination of effort and years-long dedication to what some see as a niche interest is something we’ve witnessed in so many jazz joints around the country
and it never ceases to amaze… We made it back to the car
What else could be said about a place full of such love for the music?”Tokyo Jazz Joints
a photobook by Philip Arneill with James Catchpole
is not only a visual chronicle of Japan’s subculture but also the duo’s journey of discovery and exploration that has unspooled over nearly a decade
these cafes most often hide behind shabby and nondescript doors
cramped between shops and homes on the most inconspicuous streets of Japan
the warm lighting (and it’s always that) reveals a space abound with high-end audio systems and a few stools welcoming those who can respect quietude and appreciate a good tune
An eight-seater could easily be holding 2,000 original albums
while joints with walls stained by decades of cigarette smoke house meticulously handwritten menus of available music for those who’d like to order for a specific track
a battered tambourine signed by Miles Davis hangs unassumingly above the cash register
select photos from visits to almost 200 kissa spewed across the country have been compiled into the photo book that Arneill published with an introductory essay by Catchpole this September
Tokyo Jazz Joints captures all the elements that make up the jazz culture in Japan and their book is a visual documentation of the places
We spoke to the duo over the phone about Japan and all its jazz
Chiba© Philip Arneill/Tokyo Jazz Joints 2023Why should one visit a jazz joint in Japan?PA: A kissaten translates to coffee shop in Japanese
a pick-me-up is experienced via some excellent music spiked with the owner’s tastes
I’ve had many people approach me before they visit Japan
asking for recommendations on jazz joints to visit
What’s so fascinating about these places is that they share many common features—love of jazz
dedicated owners—yet each one is different in its unique way
What are your favourite memories through the project?PA: One that springs to mind is finding a place called Groovy in Yanagawa
We drove up and down the street multiple times and eventually discovered that it was hidden away beside a Japanese bed & breakfast
The owner’s daughter called him on the phone and he came around and opened up the place
which felt like it hadn’t been opened for many weeks or even months
and he soon revealed that he had an old electric Rhodes piano hidden away under a pile of books and other junk
So we got to noodle around on it for 20 minutes
and this was one of those times that I wished very much I could have sat down and just played something beautiful
Tokyo© Philip Arneill/Tokyo Jazz Joints 2023Who are the jazz icons who have visited these places?PA: So many of these joints have been visited by jazz royalty in the past that it’s not uncommon to find memorabilia including autographs on walls and toilet doors
Basie in northern Japan has a whole wall upstairs covered with signed drum skins
many by Elvin Jones who after his time playing with John Coltrane
fell in love with Japan and toured the country many times
These joints often take on the character of their owners
Tell us about some of them.PA: Owners of these cafes are unique and idiosyncratic people
Perhaps one of the most gentle and charming owners was that of Bop in Hokkaido
He showed us many of his signed photographs
before pulling out a shoebox from under the counter
in which he had sheets and sheets of photographic negatives from John Coltrane
He had taken these by smuggling his camera into the concert hall when Coltrane had played on his only tour in Japan in 1966
Which is your favourite photograph from this project?PA: I have photographed nearly 200 joints now
and it’s almost impossible to pick out a favourite one
I will always have a soft spot for Pithecanthropus Erectus
as it’s the first place James and I ever went together
It’s also the last place I went before leaving Japan in 2017
and it features as the cover of the Tokyo Jazz Joints book
It’s hidden away by the train tracks in a railway station in Tokyo
and will happily survive many more years as it’s been taken over by a younger owner
intimate and just everything that we love about a classic jazz kissa
Tokyo© Philip Arneill/Tokyo Jazz Joints 2023Where is the greatest concentration of jazz joints in Japan
Tell us about your favourite places.PA: Inevitably
such as Tokyo and Osaka have a greater concentration of jazz joints
but one of the fantastic things is that no matter where you go in Japan you are more than likely to find a jazz spot
even in some of the smallest towns.JC: That depends on how deep you may want to go into the outer reaches of Tokyo
And thanks to efficient public transport you can do a good jazz hop in the nearer suburbs as well
But for visitors with less time and familiarity with the vast city
Shinjuku is a good spot for some jazz joint hopping
as is Shimokitazawa and the three stops near each other in central Tokyo on the Mita subway line–Jinbocho
Who has the best collection of jazz records?JC: In Paper Moon in Ikebukuro
the owner brought out a Japanese jazz album from the ‘70s that has never been reissued on CD or vinyl
It’s one of the only public places where you can hear this rare collaborative masterpiece by Sadao Watanabe and Masabumi Kikuchi
These joints feature collections of as many as 3,000 LPs
so they’re never going to be specific to an artist or a genre
you would expect to find a range of classic American and Japanese jazz
and a lot of rarities and Japanese-only pressings
Chiba© Philip Arneill/Tokyo Jazz Joints 2023Are there any origin stories that stuck with you?JC: The owner of Jazz Candy in Chiba
she worked in a large electronics store in Shinjuku
The manager played jazz on the radios there all day
and she fell in love with the music so much that she decided to open her own jazz cafe one day
and as you walk along a quiet suburb in a small town near Chiba city
you’ll suddenly see the ‘Candy’ sign—very little betrays the fact that inside she has hosted many famous free jazz musicians including Peter Brötzmann and Paal Nilssen-Love on the ground floor of her house
Is there a jazz joint whose closing you mourned?PA: One of the saddest losses was Jazz Pepe in Shinjuku-ku
It closed temporarily a few months after our visit
the owner became ill and subsequently passed away not long after
Shiramuren in Shinjuku-ku closed quite suddenly this year
and it was one of the first I photographed–a unique and beautiful little place on the second floor of an old rickety building in the famous Golden Gai area.JC: Many of them
Sadly a lot of these spots are owned by older folks of 40+ years
and running a jazz cafe or bar is not the healthiest work you can do
Many owners we have talked to were pretty open about their kids not being interested in taking over
or about gentrification hitting their area
all closed for different reasons and were a real loss
Tokyo© Philip Arneill/Tokyo Jazz Joints 2023What about the food?PA: It varies a lot
from a very basic drinks menu to some reasonably challenging snacks
and even home-made cake in some of the more rural joints
They’re not places to go for a meal (except for the wonderful reincarnation of the legendary Masao in Tokyo

J-League club team Sagan Tosu's new signing
Spanish football player Fernando Torres (L)
reacts during a football match against Vegalta Sendai at Best Amenity Stadium in Tosu
Fernando Torres will hang up his boots later this month
and to help the undoubted celebrations that will surround the match against Vissel Kobe
New Balance have unveiled a special pre-match jersey that has been inspired by Torres’ favourite Atletico Madrid shirt from the late 80s and early 90s
For the last year Fernando Torres has been playing in the J-League for Sagan Tosu
but at the end of June he announced that he would be retiring from football following a ‘farewell’ match on 23 August against rivals Vissel Kobe
for whom Torres’ former international teammates Andres Iniesta and David Villa both play
And amongst the celebrations that will take place both before and after the match
New Balance have produced two special commemorative jerseys for the occasion
The first jersey is the one that will be worn in the match
with pink stripes introduced on the light blue base
The words ‘Gracias Torres’ feature inside the collar
which again thanks Torres for his contributions
with a design that’s based on a classic retro Atlético away shirt made by Puma from the late 1980s
Torres has previously stated that this particular Atlético shirt was one of his all-time favourites and he always wished that he had been able to play in it
New Balance obviously got word of this and immediately set about creating the special jersey that will be worn before El Nino’s last-ever match
It'll be sad to see the end of El Nino's glittering career, but we'll always have the memories...
On the day that Fernando Torres announced he'll be hanging up his boots we've picked out ten reasons why he'll forever be an icon in our eyes
El Niño calls it a day having won the World Cup
Mizuno have added some serious high-profile strength to their player pool by announcing the addition of former Liverpool and Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torrres to their ranks
Mixing Spanish flair with Japanese craftsmanship
the first-ever signature edition boot for striker Fernando Torres
and at the heart of its inspiration are highlights from the World Cup winner’s glittering career
Completing the French champions' lineup for the 21/22 campaign
New Balance unveil the LOSC Lille third shirt
The design is a derivative of the city’s vibrant footprint
where dark bases are combined with energetic highlights
attention turns to the showpiece that’s set to play out in Paris this weekend
with adidas unveiling a new design for the official match ball of the Champions League final
New Balance swoop with hoops of homage for the second instalment of their Celtic FC footwear collection by dropping a special limited edition Fresh Foam Cruz v2 silhouette
Hot on the heels of the club’s new home shirt for the 21/22 season
New Balance have now unveiled the FC Porto away strip
with a design that takes inspiration from classic kits with a striking
It’s been on the cards for a little while now
but New Balance and Stone Island have picked the perfect time to unveil their first ever collaborative special edition football collection
