Skyhawks Take Series Against TSU With Senior Day Shutout4/27/2025 3:14:00 PM | Softball
The struggling HBCU is dependent on state money to survive — but is also owed money by Tennessee
TSU’s financial troubles are steep and immediate. An FAQ page on the university's website acknowledges that the financial condition has reached crisis levels stemming from missed enrollment targets and operating deficits. This fall, the university posted a projected deficit of $46 million by the end of the fiscal year
The university identified inefficient processes in financial aid, advising and enrollment systems, that contributed to its woes. It also said those problems were exacerbated by 2024’s messy federal rollout of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
the university launched a full scholarship program for some students without a plan to fund it throughout students’ journey to graduation
It paid $37 million toward the scholarship in fiscal 2022 using federal pandemic emergency funds
TSU had to issue tens of millions of dollars in institutional financial aid
causing it to heavily discount its tuition
with fall enrollment hitting 8,198 students in 2023
But the university couldn’t ultimately afford to maintain those aid levels
Taking aim at the university’s management, Tennessee lawmakers last March passed a Republican-led bill to replace all of the university’s trustees and restructure its board
Emergency state funding last fall kept the institution operating
but Tucker said TSU will need more to not just turn around — but to stay open
“It’s a fact that we can’t pay our bills,” Tucker said
noting also that the university would likely not be open today without state help
In a letter to Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee in 2023
Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and U.S
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the institution had been hurt by “longstanding and ongoing underinvestment” as a public land-grant HBCU
inequitable funding gaps led Tennessee State to miss out on $2.1 billion over 30 years
Tucker dismissed the idea of suing the state for the $2.1 billion
arguing that the legal process could take years — while the university’s financial needs are immediate
Legal action could also potentially anger the legislators whose support TSU needs to help provide funding
the institution could lose a legal challenge
Tucker — the university’s second interim president in less than a year — argued for focusing instead on the state funding gap identified by the Legislature in 2021. That gap amounts to over $540 million
Since identifying the amount, Tennessee lawmakers lined up a one-time $250 million sum for the university to invest in infrastructure
Tucker said the university could use a portion of those funds to keep it afloat through the first year of a five-year plan
TSU and its board are considering financial exigency
a restructuring process that allows an institution experiencing budgetary distress to lay off tenured faculty and shut down academic programs
In a special meeting of TSU’s board on Jan
a consultant with the National Association of College and University Business Officers presented a detailed workshop on how exigency works
Tucker said Tuesday that officials were considering exigency but that it wasn’t in the university’s immediate plans

Texas Southern University is asking lawmakers for $120 million to replace its law school building after the organization that sets standards for law schools deemed it unsafe and ill-suited to serve students with disabilities
If the university doesn’t address the litany of problems with the building
the school stands to lose its ability to offer federal financial aid to its students
University officials say storms — from Hurricane Rita in 2005 to Hurricane Harvey in 2017 — have battered the Thurgood Marshall School of Law in the nearly 50 years since it was built in the Third Ward of Houston
but the fixes weren’t enough for the American Bar Association
which evaluates and sets standards for law schools across the country
the organization told TSU the building did not comply with its standards for facilities
The school was told the building poses health and safety concerns and needs more elevators for people with disabilities as well as more space for students and faculty overall
The ABA told the university it would need to build a new facility to remain accredited
Accreditation ensures a higher education institution meets basic quality standards
Only students attending accredited institutions qualify for federal student grants and loans
The ABA does not appear to have given TSU a deadline to meet its facilities standards
The organization declined to comment on this story
“I cannot speculate on what failing to replace the aging facility would mean
What I would say is we owe our students the best learning and preparatory experience possible,” University President James W
“It is very difficult to do so in the current facility.”
This is the second time TSU has requested money for a new law school building
During the previous legislative session two years ago
the university asked for $415 million for capital projects
funding to build a new law school is part of TSU’s latest $202 million request for capital projects
which also includes $50 million to upgrade classrooms and address health and safety issues with electrical
mechanical and plumbing systems at other campus buildings
TSU’s law school was created in the 1940s after a Black student was denied admission to the University of Texas at Austin’s law school
Despite only representing 3% of all four-year institutions in the nation, historically Black colleges and universities like TSU graduate 17% of all Black students who obtain a bachelor’s degree and enroll twice as many Pell Grant-eligible students as non-HBCUs, according to a nonprofit that supports HBCUs
The Thurgood Marshall School of Law is Texas’ No
1 school in graduating Black attorneys and No
House for his protest during President Donald Trump’s speech before Congress last week
Many HBCUs like TSU have been underfunded for decades. In 2023, the U.S. Department of Education notified 16 states
that they had collectively underfunded HBCUs by $12 billion in the past 30 years
In 2018, the federal government studied how underfunding has led to HBCUs struggling to maintain and improve their infrastructure
Seventy of 79 HBCUs surveyed at that time reported that many — if not most — of their buildings needed to be repaired or replaced
It’s unclear whether lawmakers will grant TSU’s request this time
The money isn’t included in their initial spending plan
This month, TSU students joined Crawford, a decorated Navy veteran who was appointed university president less than a year ago
when he testified before the Texas House’s higher education committee to request funds to replace the law school building
State Rep. Donna Howard, an Austin Democrat who serves as vice chair of the committee, noted a Thurgood Marshall Law School student currently works for her. Another committee member, state Rep. Stan Lambert
remarked that seeing the students don the school’s maroon-and-grey colors and fill most of the committee room’s seats sent a “strong statement.”
“I’ve been asked many times why did I go from the Armed Forces
from being privileged to serve the colors of our nation to Texas Southern and you’re looking at it right now
right behind me,” Crawford said of the students

The first week of March was a busy one at Bridgestone Arena as members of the Nashville Predators organization
came together to host the second annual Smashville Seminar for Human Performance and Sport Science (HPSS) students at Tennessee State University
An initiative that started during the 2023-2024 season
the Smashville Seminar was held at Bridgestone Arena with the intention of increasing local students’ understanding of the game of hockey
the practices that go into the business side of the Sports and Entertainment industry
22 HPSS students were involved in over 30 sessions hosted by Nashville Predators Executive Leadership
These sessions were filled with context and business acumen as it pertains to each presenter's area of expertise
The Smashville Seminar is intended to be fun
and the educational content also has to be strong as students receive college credit for their participation
TSU student highlights included the opportunity to shadow staff members during the Nashville Predators vs
volunteer with the Community Resource Center as part of the Nashville Predators Foundation Hearts of Gold initiative and more
Offering one-of-a-kind networking opportunities
behind-the-scenes tours and insights into the industry
the Smashville Seminar has become a highly-sought after experience for HPSS students at TSU
rooted in the Nashville Predators' 'GUIDER' initiative
represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students,” Department Chair Dr
“Students are carefully selected based on their academic performance and career aspirations
They enjoy exclusive access to Predators leadership
[President and Chief Operating Officer] Michelle Kennedy and [General Manager] Barry Trotz…creating a truly memorable and educational experience.”
A shared desire between the Nashville Predators and TSU to connect students with industry professionals outside of the classroom has blossomed into a beautiful partnership that is actively serving HPSS students
helping them gain confidence before joining the Sports and Entertainment workforce
the best part is seeing the looks on students’ faces when they realize
‘I can do this,’” Interim VP of Academic Affairs at TSU Robbie Melton said
“Watching them light up during conversations
hearing them talk about what they learned and seeing their excitement about what’s next—that’s what it’s all about
This seminar isn’t just about one week or one event—it’s about giving students something they’ll carry with them for the rest of their lives.”
It’s no secret the Predators have various initiatives to increase the connection between the team and Music City
The Smashville Seminar is an organization-wide partnership that continues to be a favorite among the Preds front office participants
This engagement has produced a strong initiative that the Preds and TSU expect to continue for years to come
“The community has been a key pillar of the Nashville Predators organization since day one of the team's existence,” Preds Director of Diversity
“We said yes to a continued partnership with the Human Performance and Sport Science department at TSU because their professors are passionate Preds fans who want to share their fandom with students and we have opportunities within the industry to share… As the TSU Tigers continue to grow their own hockey programming on campus
it's a natural tie to highlight all that has been built over the years and how students can be involved
“We are beyond grateful to the Predators for making this happen,” Melton said
“They didn’t just create a seminar—they created an opportunity for students to dream bigger and see what’s possible
It means so much to us that they care about investing in the next generation and giving students the tools to succeed
You can tell this is more than just a program to them—it’s a way to give back and help shape the future
We’re incredibly lucky to have a partner like the Predators who believe in our students as much as we do.”

(WTVF) — With federal budget cuts swirling
Tennessee State University is at risk of losing $14 million
The funding comes from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture
in large part because they are a land grant institution
The only other one like it in the state is the University of Tennessee-Knoxville
"We have identified other grants we can absorb that
this is going to affect our people," TSU finance director John Grady said
Around 70 funds were frozen in February as part of the grant executive order from President Donald Trump
the university relies on $115 million in federal grants
From that 62 employees are fully funded through those programs and 112 employees have received more than 50% of their salaries from federal grants
Previously, The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s website shows that it had suspended a scholarship program for students who enroll at Tennessee State University and other land-grant historically Black colleges. Those grants and money were reinstated
Grady said they were no exception to grant cuts hurting the university
but they are unique in their financial problems
